The singly flagellated bacterium, Vibrio alginolyticus, moves forward and backward by alternating the rotational direction of its flagellum. The bacterium has been observed retracing a previous path almost exactly and swimming in a zigzag pattern. In the presence of a boundary, however, the motion changes significantly, to something closer to a circular trajectory. Additionally, when the cell swims close to a wall, the forward and backward speeds differ noticeably. This study details a boundary element model for the motion of a bacterium swimming near a rigid boundary and the results of numerical analyses conducted using this model. The results reveal that bacterium motion is apparently influenced by pitch angle, i.e., the angle between the boundary and the swimming direction, and that forward motion is more stable than backward motion with respect to pitching of the bacterium. From these results, a set of diagrammatic representations have been created that explain the observed asymmetry in trajectory and speed between the forward and backward motions. For forward motion, a cell moving parallel to the boundary will maintain this trajectory. However, for backward motion, the resulting trajectory depends upon whether the bacterium is approaching or departing the boundary. Fluid-dynamic interactions between the flagellum and the boundary vary with cell orientation and cause peculiarities in the resulting trajectories.  相似文献

Two experiments tested whether the consistency of element transformations affected perceptions of long-range apparent motion. Vertical lines were used to generate apparent motion against one of two different backgrounds, control and depth. Consistency was manipulated by changing the size of the vertical lines. In some displays, the size of the vertical lines remained constant during movement. In other displays, the size of the vertical lines changed during movement. Consistent movement occurred when the size manipulation was in agreement with the type of background used. In Experiment I, points of subject equality for the quality of motion relative to a standard display were measured. These PSEs indicated that consistent movement (e.g., line sizes held constant for control background displays) was more visible than inconsistent movement (e.g., line sizes constant for depth background displays). In Experiment II, a motion competition display was used to measure thresholds for perceived direction of motion. The depth background was used to make motion in one direction more consistent than motion in the opposite direction. However, no significant differences were noted between thresholds obtained in this condition and those obtained in a control condition. Thus the consistency of element transformations affected the quality of motion, but did not affect the perceived direction of motion. These results are consistent with Ullman's (The Interpretation of Visual Motion, MIT Press, 1979) two-component theory of apparent motion.  相似文献

The outer hair cell (OHC) of the mammalian inner ear exhibits an unusual form of somatic motility that can follow membrane-potential changes at acoustic frequencies. The cellular forces that produce this motility are believed to amplify the motion of the cochlear partition, thereby playing a key role in increasing hearing sensitivity. To better understand the role of OHC somatic motility in cochlear micromechanics, we developed an excised cochlea preparation to visualize simultaneously the electrically-evoked motion of hundreds of cells within the organ of Corti (OC). The motion was captured using stroboscopic video microscopy and quantified using cross-correlation techniques. The OC motion at approximately 2-6 octaves below the characteristic frequency of the region was complex: OHC, Deiter's cell, and Hensen's cell motion were hundreds of times larger than the tectorial membrane, reticular lamina (RL), and pillar cell motion; the inner rows of OHCs moved antiphasic to the outer row; OHCs pivoted about the RL; and Hensen's cells followed the motion of the outer row of OHCs. Our results suggest that the effective stimulus to the inner hair cell hair bundles results not from a simple OC lever action, as assumed by classical models, but by a complex internal motion coupled to the RL.  相似文献

During normal viewing, the continuous stream of visual input is regularly interrupted, for instance by blinks of the eye. Despite these frequents blanks (that is the transient absence of a raw sensory source), the visual system is most often able to maintain a continuous representation of motion. For instance, it maintains the movement of the eye such as to stabilize the image of an object. This ability suggests the existence of a generic neural mechanism of motion extrapolation to deal with fragmented inputs. In this paper, we have modeled how the visual system may extrapolate the trajectory of an object during a blank using motion-based prediction. This implies that using a prior on the coherency of motion, the system may integrate previous motion information even in the absence of a stimulus. In order to compare with experimental results, we simulated tracking velocity responses. We found that the response of the motion integration process to a blanked trajectory pauses at the onset of the blank, but that it quickly recovers the information on the trajectory after reappearance. This is compatible with behavioral and neural observations on motion extrapolation. To understand these mechanisms, we have recorded the response of the model to a noisy stimulus. Crucially, we found that motion-based prediction acted at the global level as a gain control mechanism and that we could switch from a smooth regime to a binary tracking behavior where the dot is tracked or lost. Our results imply that a local prior implementing motion-based prediction is sufficient to explain a large range of neural and behavioral results at a more global level. We show that the tracking behavior deteriorates for sensory noise levels higher than a certain value, where motion coherency and predictability fail to hold longer. In particular, we found that motion-based prediction leads to the emergence of a tracking behavior only when enough information from the trajectory has been accumulated. Then, during tracking, trajectory estimation is robust to blanks even in the presence of relatively high levels of noise. Moreover, we found that tracking is necessary for motion extrapolation, this calls for further experimental work exploring the role of noise in motion extrapolation.  相似文献

A computational model is presented for the detection of coherent motion based on template matching and hidden Markov models. The premise of this approach is that the growth in detection sensitivity is greater for coherent motion of structured forms than for random coherent motion. In this preliminary study, a recent experiment was simulated with the model and the results are shown to be in agreement with the above premise. This model can be extended to be part of a more complex and elaborate computational visual system.  相似文献

It is shown that existing processing schemes of 3D motion perception such as interocular velocity difference, changing disparity over time, as well as joint encoding of motion and disparity, do not offer a general solution to the inverse optics problem of local binocular 3D motion. Instead we suggest that local velocity constraints in combination with binocular disparity and other depth cues provide a more flexible framework for the solution of the inverse problem. In the context of the aperture problem we derive predictions from two plausible default strategies: (1) the vector normal prefers slow motion in 3D whereas (2) the cyclopean average is based on slow motion in 2D. Predicting perceived motion directions for ambiguous line motion provides an opportunity to distinguish between these strategies of 3D motion processing. Our theoretical results suggest that velocity constraints and disparity from feature tracking are needed to solve the inverse problem of 3D motion perception. It seems plausible that motion and disparity input is processed in parallel and integrated late in the visual processing hierarchy.  相似文献

In this paper we examine a method to control the stepping motion of a paralyzed person suspended over a treadmill using a robot attached to the pelvis. A leg swing motion is created by moving the pelvis without contact with the legs. The problem is formulated as an optimal control problem for an underactuated articulated chain. The optimal control problem is converted into a discrete parameter optimization and an efficient gradient-based algorithm is used to solve it. Motion capture data from an unimpaired human subject is compared to the simulation results from the dynamic motion optimization. Our results suggest that it is feasible to drive repetitive stepping on a treadmill by a paralyzed person by assisting in torso movement alone. The optimized, pelvic motion strategies are comparable to "hip-hiking" gait strategies used by people with lower limb prostheses or hemiparesis. Previous results on the perception of motion indicate that perceived motion paths cannot be explained solely in terms of simple feature-specific analyzers. This is particularly true of apparent (phi) motion. In this paper we develop a dynamic network, with simple filtering and summation properties, which can predict the geometric paths of apparent motion in various spatio-temporal configurations. The network assumptions predict a non-Euclidean metric for the visual space-time of motion perception and we consider the implications of such distortions for various visual displays, including illusions.  相似文献

Our earlier psychophysical work has shown that colour and motion are not perceived at the same time, with colour leading motion by about 50-100 ms. In pursuing this work, we thought it would be interesting to use a more complex colour stimulus, one in which the wavelength composition of the light reflected or emitted from surfaces changes continually, without entailing a change in the perceived colour (colour constancy). We therefore used a Mondrian figure--an abstract multi-coloured scene with no recognizable objects--against which squares (either red or green) moved up and down, changing colour from red to green in various phase differences with the change in direction of motion. The red and green squares changed continually in their spectral characteristics, as did every other patch on the Mondrian. The results showed that colour is still perceived before motion, by about 80 ms.  相似文献

1H nuclear magnetic resonance techniques were used to study the binding of uridine 5'-triphosphate to the Ca2+-transport ATPase (EC 3.6.1.3) of sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles from rabbit skeletal muscle. The nuclear spin relaxation times determined for the bound nucleotide are used to characterize the rotational motion of the ATPase to which the nucleotide is bound. The results, assuming an anisotropic model for the motion of the ATPase in the membrane, place a low upper limit on the rotational correlation time of the ATPase. This indicates that the motion of the ATPase in the membrane is quite rapid when compared, for example, with the motion found for other membrane-bound proteins such as rhodopsin.  相似文献

A method to investigate the rhythm of the human shoulder, i.e. the interplay between the motion of constituent parts of the shoulder, has been devised and tested. The method is based upon numerical evaluation of low dose roentgenstereophotogrammetric motion pictures of subjects equipped with radiation dense implantations in the bones. Evaluation of the method shows that it may be used in determining motion patterns and that the employed interpolation techniques can be used to simulate motions not actually performed in the laboratory. The shoulder rhythm has been previously poorly investigated and quantified results published pertain to one plane only. Our results on motion patterns correlate with previous investigations. With this method, we show that the absolute position of the bones varies significantly between individuals while the relative displacement of the bones during motion exhibit similarities. In particular the results show that, under normal conditions, the individual rhythm is very stable and insensitive to small hand-loads.  相似文献

Recombinant glycoprotein Ibα latex beads (rGPIbα-LB) are a potential solution to overcoming platelet transfusion problems with artificial platelets. To understand the transport process of artificial platelets and to estimate the particle motion when adhering to the wall surface, we evaluated the lateral motion of rGPIbα-LB in terms of drift and random motion, because the lateral motion is an important factor for transport and adhesion. We observed the lateral motion of rGPIbα-LB flowing with red blood cells toward the immobilized von Willebrand factor (vWf) surface in a model arteriole at wall shear rates of 200–1000 s?1 and 0–40% Hct. At 40% Hct, wall shear rate dependence was observed for the drift motion, i.e. the lateral velocity of rGPIbα-LB toward the wall. In the near-wall region, the drift motion of contacting particles differed substantially from that of non-contacting particles. Additionally, the trajectories of contacting particles on the vWf surface had specific motion that was not observed on the BSA surface. These results suggest that the adhesion force between rGPIbα and vWf is highly associated with the motion of particles near the wall. These features are desirable for artificial platelets, particularly for the adhesion process.  相似文献

Background

When a moving stimulus and a briefly flashed static stimulus are physically aligned in space the static stimulus is perceived as lagging behind the moving stimulus. This vastly replicated phenomenon is known as the Flash-Lag Effect (FLE). For the first time we employed biological motion as the moving stimulus, which is important for two reasons. Firstly, biological motion is processed by visual as well as somatosensory brain areas, which makes it a prime candidate for elucidating the interplay between the two systems with respect to the FLE. Secondly, discussions about the mechanisms of the FLE tend to recur to evolutionary arguments, while most studies employ highly artificial stimuli with constant velocities.

Methodology/Principal Finding

Since biological motion is ecologically valid it follows complex patterns with changing velocity. We therefore compared biological to symbolic motion with the same acceleration profile. Our results with 16 observers revealed a qualitatively different pattern for biological compared to symbolic motion and this pattern was predicted by the characteristics of motor resonance: The amount of anticipatory processing of perceived actions based on the induced perspective and agency modulated the FLE.

Conclusions/Significance

Our study provides first evidence for an FLE with non-linear motion in general and with biological motion in particular. Our results suggest that predictive coding within the sensorimotor system alone cannot explain the FLE. Our findings are compatible with visual prediction (Nijhawan, 2008) which assumes that extrapolated motion representations within the visual system generate the FLE. These representations are modulated by sudden visual input (e.g. offset signals) or by input from other systems (e.g. sensorimotor) that can boost or attenuate overshooting representations in accordance with biased neural competition (Desimone & Duncan, 1995).  相似文献

Motion is a potent sub-modality of vision. Motion cues alone can be used to segment images into figure and ground and break camouflage. Specific patterns of motion support vivid percepts of form, guide locomotion by specifying directional heading and the passage of objects, and in case of an impending collision, the time to impact. Visual motion also drives smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs) that serve to stabilize the retinal image of objects in motion. In contrast, the auditory system does not appear to be particularly sensitive to motion. We review the ambiguous status of auditory motion processing from the psychophysical and electrophysiological perspectives. We then report the results of two experiments that use ocular tracking performance as an objective measure of the perception of auditory motion in humans. We examine ocular tracking of auditory motion, visual motion, combined auditory + visual motion and imagined motion in both the frontal plane and in depth. The results demonstrate that ocular tracking of auditory motion is no better than ocular tracking of imagined motion. These results are consistent with the suggestion that, unlike the visual system, the human auditory system is not endowed with low-level motion sensitive elements. We hypothesize however, that auditory information may gain access to a recently described high-level motion processing system that is heavily dependent on 'top-down' influences, including attention.  相似文献

Given that biological motion is both detected and preferred early in life, we tested the hypothesis that biological motion might be instrumental to infants’ differentiation of animate and inanimate categories. Infants were primed with either point-light displays of realistic biological motion, random motion, or schematic biological motion of an unfamiliar shape. After being habituated to these displays, 12-month-old infants categorized animals and vehicles as well as furniture and vehicles with the sequential touching task. The findings indicated that infants primed with point-light displays of realistic biological motion showed better categorization of animates than those exposed to random or schematic biological motion. These results suggest that human biological motion might be one of the motion cues that provide the building blocks for infants’ concept of animacy.  相似文献

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) is the prototype of ligand-gated ion channels. Here, we calculate the dynamics of the muscle AChR using normal modes. The calculations reveal a twist-like gating motion responsible for channel opening. The ion channel diameter is shown to increase with this twist motion. Strikingly, the twist motion and the increase in channel diameter are not observed for the AChR in complex with two alpha-bungarotoxin (alphaBTX) molecules. The toxins seems to lock together neighboring receptor subunits, thereby inhibiting channel opening. Interestingly, one alphaBTX molecule suffices to prevent the twist motion. These results shed light on the gating mechanism of the AChR and present a complementary inhibition mechanism by snake-venom-derived alpha-neurotoxins.  相似文献

Recent imaging studies have reported directional motion biases in human visual cortex when perceiving moving random dot patterns. It has been hypothesized that these biases occur as a result of the integration of motion detector activation along the path of motion in visual cortex. In this study we investigate the nature of such motion integration with functional MRI (fMRI) using different motion stimuli. Three types of moving random dot stimuli were presented, showing either coherent motion, motion with spatial decorrelations or motion with temporal decorrelations. The results from the coherent motion stimulus reproduced the centripetal and centrifugal directional motion biases in V1, V2 and V3 as previously reported. The temporally decorrelated motion stimulus resulted in both centripetal and centrifugal biases similar to coherent motion. In contrast, the spatially decorrelated motion stimulus resulted in small directional motion biases that were only present in parts of visual cortex coding for higher eccentricities of the visual field. In combination with previous results, these findings indicate that biased motion responses in early visual cortical areas most likely depend on the spatial integration of a simultaneously activated motion detector chain.  相似文献

Human subjects standing in a sinusoidally moving visual environment display postural sway with characteristic dynamical properties. We analyzed the spatiotemporal properties of this sway in an experiment in which the frequency of the visual motion was varied. We found a constant gain near 1, which implies that the sway motion matches the spatial parameters of the visual motion for a large range of frequencies. A linear dynamical model with constant parameters was compared quantitatively with the data. Its failure to describe correctly the spatiotemporal properties of the system led us to consider adaptive and nonlinear models. To differentiate between possible alternative structures we directly fitted nonlinear differential equations to the sway and visual motion trajectories on a trial-by-trial basis. We found that the eigenfrequency of the fitted model adapts strongly to the visual motion frequency. The damping coefficient decreases with increasing frequency. This indicates that the system destabilizes its postural state in the inertial frame. This leads to a faster internal dynamics which is capable of synchronizing posture with fast-moving visual environments. Using an algorithm which allows the identification of essentially nonlinear terms of the dynamics we found small nonlinear contributions. These nonlinearities are not consistent with a limit-cycle dynamics, accounting for the robustness of the amplitude of postural sway against frequency variations. We interpret our results in terms of active generation of postural sway specified by sensory information. We derive also a number of conclusions for a behavior-oriented analysis of the postural system.  相似文献

A computer-based mathematical technique was developed to measure and completely describe the migration and micromotion of a femoral hip prosthesis relative to the femur. This technique utilized the mechanics of rigid-body motion analysis and apparatus of seven linear displacement transducers to measure and describe the complete three-dimensional motion of the prosthesis during cyclic loading. Computer acquisition of the data and custom analysis software allowed one to calculate the magnitude and direction of the motion of any point of interest on the prostheses from information about the motion of two points on the device. The data were also used to replay the tests using a computer animation technique, which allowed a magnified view of the three-dimensional motion of the prosthesis. This paper describes the mathematical development of the rigid-body motion analysis, the experimental method and apparatus for data collection, the technique used to animate the motion, the sources of error and the effect of the assumptions (rigid bodies) on the results. Selected results of individual test runs of uncemented and cemented prostheses are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the method. The combined effect of the vibration and electrical noise resulted in a resolution of the system of about 3-5 microns motion for each transducer. Deformation effects appear to contribute about 3-15 microns to the measurement error. This measurement and analysis technique is a very sensitive and powerful means of assessing the effects of different design parameters on the migration and micromotion of total joint prostheses and can be applied to any other case (knee, dental implant) where three-dimensional relative motion between two bodies is important.  相似文献
