Control of onchocerciasis currently focuses on community-directed treatment with the microfilaricide ivermectin which effectively kills Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae in the human host. The feasibility of elimination by this control strategy has recently been reported for some foci in Africa which has rekindled discussions on evaluating the threshold conditions of elimination of onchocerciasis. We developed a stochastic model based on a master equation which predicts, based on data from West and Central Africa, that elimination of savannah onchocerciasis can be expected around a threshold biting rate of 730 bites per person per year, ranging region-specifically roughly from 230 to 2300 bites per person and year. The threshold values give rise to optimism that elimination of onchocerciasis is feasible, but the associated measures of parasite prevalence and density suggest that onchocerciasis can remain endemic at very low infection intensities. Endemicity at a low level is a risk factor for elimination strategies, and we point to the necessity of investigating these issues on the basis of breakpoints which refer to threshold conditions based on parasite prevalence and density.  相似文献

Control of onchocerciasis in Africa is currently based on annual community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) which has been assumed to be not efficient enough to bring about elimination. However, elimination has recently been reported to have been achieved by CDTI alone in villages of Senegal and Mali, reviving debate on the eradicability of onchocerciasis in Africa. We investigate the eradicability of onchocerciasis by examining threshold shifts and breakpoints predicted by a stochastic transmission model that has been fitted extensively to data. We show that elimination based on CDTI relies on shifting the threshold biting rate to a level that is higher than the annual biting rate. Breakpoints become relevant in the context of when to stop CDTI. In order for the model to predict a good chance for CDTI to eliminate onchocerciasis, facilitating factors such as the macrofilaricidal effect of ivermectin must be assumed. A chart predicting the minimum efficacy of CDTI required for elimination, dependent on the annual biting rate, is provided. Generalisable recommendations into strategies for the elimination of onchocerciasis are derived, particularly referring to the roles of vectors, the residual infection rate under control, and a low-spreader problem originating from patients with low parasite burdens.  相似文献

Until recently, intensified efforts in China to suppress the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum relied principally on routine praziquantel treatment, extensive use of molluscicides and health education programs. These efforts, now supplemented by a broader range of control measures, have been quite successful in reducing the prevalence and intensity of human infection to very low levels. However, re-emergent transmission has occurred in formerly endemic areas of several provinces, signalling the need for more locally effective, integrated control strategies. We argue that these low but persistent levels of transmission also require important changes in both the tactics and strategy of disease surveillance to move forward towards elimination. Here we present recent data exemplifying the low transmission environment which suggests that we are reaching limits of detection of current diagnostic techniques used for human infection surveillance in these communities. However, both epidemiological data and theoretical results indicate that (i) transmission in the human population can persist at very low infection intensities even in the presence of routine control activities; (ii) the parasite can be reintroduced into parasite-free environments by very modest external inputs; and (iii) transmission at these low infection intensities exhibits very slow inter-year dynamics. These observations motivate the need for new, sensitive tools to identify low-level infections in mammalian or snail hosts, or the presence of S. japonicum in environmental media. Environmental monitoring offers an alternative, and perhaps more efficient, approach to large-scale surveillance of human infections in low transmission regions.  相似文献

We investigated the vertical transmission, reproductive phenotype, and infection density of a male-killing Spiroplasma symbiont in two Drosophila species under physiological high and low temperatures through successive host generations. In both the native host Drosophila nebulosa and the nonnative host Drosophila melanogaster, the symbiont infection and the male-killing phenotype were stably maintained at 25 degrees C, rapidly lost at 18 degrees C, and gradually lost at 28 degrees C. In the nonnative host, both the high and low temperatures significantly suppressed the infection density of the spiroplasma. In the native host, by contrast, the low temperature suppressed the infection density of the spiroplasma whereas the high temperature had little effect on the infection density. These results suggested that the low temperature suppresses both the infection density and the vertical transmission of the spiroplasma whereas the high temperature suppresses the vertical transmission preferentially. The spiroplasma density was consistently higher in the native host than in the nonnative host, suggesting that the host genotype may affect the infection density of the symbiont. The temperature- and genotype-dependent instability of the symbiont infection highlights a complex genotype-by-genotype-by-environment interaction and may be relevant to the low infection frequencies of the male-killing spiroplasmas in natural Drosophila populations.  相似文献

The frequency of phenotypic resistance to herbicides in previously untreated weed populations and the herbicide dose applied to these populations are key determinants of the dynamics of selection for resistance. In total, 31 Lolium rigidum populations were collected from sites with no previous history of exposure to herbicides and where there was little probability of gene flow from adjacent resistant populations. The mean survival frequency across all 31 populations following two applications of commercial rates (375 g ha(-1)) of the acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) inhibiting herbicide, diclofop-methyl was 0.43%. Survivors from five of these populations were grown to maturity and seed was collected. Dose-response experiments compared population level resistance to diclofop-methyl in these selected lines with their original parent populations. A single cycle of herbicide selection significantly increased resistance in all populations (LD(50) R:S ratios ranged from 2.8 to 23.2), confirming the inheritance and genetic basis of phenotypic resistance. In vitro assays of ACCase inhibition by diclofop acid indicated that resistance was due to a non-target-site mechanism. Following selection with diclofop-methyl, the five L. rigidum populations exhibited diverse patterns of cross-resistance to ACCase and ALS-inhibiting herbicides, suggesting that different genes or gene combinations were responsible for resistance. The relevance of these results to the management of herbicide resistance are discussed.  相似文献

African green monkeys (AGMs) are naturally infected with a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVagm) that is nonpathogenic in its host. Although SIVagm is common and widespread, little is known about the mechanisms that govern its transmission. Since the earliest virus-host interactions may provide key insights into the nonpathogenic phenotype of SIVagm, we developed a mucosal transmission model for this virus. Using plasma from an acutely infected AGM as the virus inoculum, we exposed adult and juvenile AGMs, as well as pigtailed macaques (PTMs) as a nonnatural host control, by mucosal routes to increasing titers of virus and compared the doses needed to establish a productive infection. Four juvenile and four adult AGMs as well as two PTMs were intrarectally (IR) exposed, while two additional adult female AGMs were intravaginally (IVAG) exposed. No animal became infected following exposure to 10(5) RNA copies. Both PTMs but none of the AGMs became infected following exposure to 10(6) RNA copies. Finally, all adult AGMs and two of the four juvenile AGMs became infected following exposure to 10(7) RNA copies, acquiring either one (2 IR infected juveniles, 1 IR infected adult, 2 IVAG infected adults) or two (3 IR infected adults) transmitted founder viruses. These results were consistent with immunophenotypic data, which revealed a significant correlation between the percentage of CD4(+) T cells expressing CCR5 in the mucosa and the susceptibility to infection, in terms of both the viral dose and the numbers of transmitted founder viruses. Moreover, studies of uninfected AGMs showed that the fraction of CCR5-expressing CD4(+) T cells increased significantly with age. These results indicate that (i) AGMs are readily infected with SIVagm by both intrarectal and intravaginal routes, (ii) susceptibility to infection is proportional to the number of available CCR5(+) CD4(+) target cells in the mucosa, and (iii) the paucity of CCR5(+) CD4(+) target cells in infant and juvenile AGMs may explain the near absence of vertical transmission.  相似文献

We re-examined the question of whether the stomata limit photosynthesis in dehydrated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plants having low leaf water potentials. A gas-exchange apparatus was modified to operate at external CO2 partial pressures as high as 3000 Pa (3%), which were much higher than previously achieved. This allowed photosynthesis and stomatal behavior to be monitored simultaneously at very high CO2 in the same leaf. The data were compared with those from leaves treated with abscisic acid (ABA) where effects on photosynthesis are entirely stomatal. Photosynthesis was inhibited at low water potential and was only slightly enhanced by increasing the external CO2 partial pressure from 34 Pa (normal air) to 300 Pa. Photosynthesis in ABA-treated leaves was similarly inhibited but recovered fully at 300 Pa. In both cases, the stomata closed to the same extent as judged from the average conductance of the leaves. Because the ABA effect resulted from diffusion limitation for CO2 caused by stomatal closure, the contrasting data show that most of the dehydration effect was nonstomatal at low water potentials. When CO2 partial pressures were raised further to 3000 Pa, photosynthesis increased somewhat at low water potentials but not in ABA-treated leaves. This indicates that some nonstomatal component of photosynthesis responded differently in leaves at low water potential and leaves treated with ABA. Short read sequencing of diploid individuals does not permit the direct inference of the sequence on each of the two homologous chromosomes. Although various phasing software packages exist, they were primarily tailored for and tested on human data, which differ from other species in factors that influence phasing, such as SNP density, amounts of linkage disequilibrium (LD) and sample sizes. Despite becoming increasingly popular for other species, the reliability of phasing in non‐human data has not been evaluated to a sufficient extent. We scrutinized the phasing accuracy for Drosophila melanogaster, a species with high polymorphism levels and reduced LD relative to humans. We phased two D. melanogaster populations and compared the results to the known haplotypes. The performance increased with size of the reference panel and was highest when the reference panel and phased individuals were from the same population. Full genomic SNP data and inclusion of sequence read information also improved phasing. Despite humans and Drosophila having similar switch error rates between polymorphic sites, the distances between switch errors were much shorter in Drosophila with only fragments <300–1500 bp being correctly phased with ≥95% confidence. This suggests that the higher SNP density cannot compensate for the higher recombination rate in D. melanogaster. Furthermore, we show that populations that have gone through demographic events such as bottlenecks can be phased with higher accuracy. Our results highlight that statistically phased data are particularly error prone in species with large population sizes or populations lacking suitable reference panels.  相似文献

A total of 587 kidding records of West African Dwarf (WAD) goats over 10 years (1982–1991) were used. Mean kidding interval and litter size at birth were 275.68 ± 6.08 days and 1.79 ± 0.05 kids, respectively. Effects of parity, season and year of birth were significant (P < 0.05) for kidding interval. Parity also had significant effect (P < 0.05) on litter size at birth. Heritability estimates of 0.35 ± 0.05 and 0.32 ± 0.07 were obtained from sire and sire-dam groups, respectively, for litter size at birth. Heritability estimate for kidding interval was 0.03 ± 0.01 from sire-dam group. Repeatability estimates of 0.38 ± 0.05 and 0.33 ± 0.03 were obtained for litter size at birth while 0.06 ± 0.04 and 0.04 ± 0.02 were obtained for kidding interval from dam and sire-dam group, respectively. Selection for multiple birth is likely to result in larger litter size while culling of does for long kidding interval should be based on more than two records.  相似文献

Humans are both intentionally (fertilization) and unintentionally (atmospheric nutrient deposition) adding nutrients worldwide. Increasing availability of biologically reactive nitrogen (N) is one of the major drivers of plant species loss. It remains unclear, however, whether plant diversity will be equally reduced by inputs of reactive N coming from either small and frequent N deposition events or large and infrequent N fertilization events. By independently manipulating the rate and frequency of reactive N inputs, our study teases apart these potentially contrasting effects. Plant species richness decreased more quickly at high rates and at low frequency of N addition, which suggests that previous fertilization studies have likely over‐estimated the effects of N deposition on plant species loss. N‐induced species loss resulted from both acidification and ammonium toxicity. Further study of small and frequent N additions will be necessary to project future rates of plant species loss under increasing aerial N deposition.  相似文献

Abstract .During the decade from 1984 to 1993, nine species of the Simulium damnosum complex of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) were identified from the area covered by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme. These were S. damnosum s.s., S. dieguerense, S. konkourense, S. leonense, S. sanctipauli, S. sirbanum, S. soubrense, S. squamosum, and S. yahense. Some of these species were found to consist of two chromosomal variant populations. These were S. konkourense‘Konkouré' and ‘Menankaya' forms, S. sanctipauli sensu stricto and‘Djodji' form, S. soubrense‘Chute Milo' and ‘Beffa' forms. The distribution of these twelve cytological taxa was assessed in relation to the two main vegetation zones of West Africa (forest and savanna), topography, river size and other factors. The range of each species was influenced by seasonal climatic changes in wind movement and river water level. The most widely distributed species were S. sirbanum and S. damnosum s.s., associated with savanna areas, recorded from all river basins. Simulium dieguerense was restricted mainly to Western Mali on the Rivers Bafing and Bakoye in the Senegal River basin. Simulium squamosum was identified from rivers draining mountainous areas in both the forest and savanna zones. Simulium yahense was found in small permanent rivers along a wide forested band parallel to the coast and was absent from the plains of Togo and Benin. Members of the S. sanctipauli subcomplex had restricted distributions except for S. sanctipauli s.s., which was widespread in large rivers of the forest zone from Sierra Leone to the Volta Lake in Ghana. Simulium soubrense‘Beffa' form occurred in Togo and Benin, S. soubrense‘Chutes Milo' form in Guinea, both ‘Konkouré' and ‘Menankaya' forms of S. konkourense occurred predominantly in Guinea and S. leonense in Sierra Leone. The relevance of the distribution maps and the importance of the data bank to vector control larvicidal operations are discussed.  相似文献

African swine fever virus (ASFV) infection in adult Ornithodoros porcinus (Murry 1877, sensu Walton 1979 ) ticks collected from warthog burrows in southern and East Africa was assessed using a duplex genomic amplification approach that is informative with respect to the invertebrate host species and infecting sylvatic cycle virus. DNA extracted from individual ticks was used as template for the simultaneous amplification of a C‐terminal 478‐bp ASFV p72 gene region and a ~313‐bp fragment of the tick mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene, under optimized reaction conditions. Within‐warthog burrow infection rates ranged from 0% to 43% using this approach, and phylogenetic analysis of 16S gene sequences revealed the presence of three geographically discrete O. porcinus lineages, but no support for subspecies recognition. False negatives are precluded by the inclusion of host species‐informative primers that ensure the DNA integrity of cytoplasmically located genome extracts. In addition, infection rate estimates are further improved as false positives arising from carry‐over contamination when performing a two‐step nested polymerase chain reaction are negated by the one‐step approach. Phylogenetic comparison of full‐length virus gene sequences with the partial C‐terminal p72 gene target confirmed the epidemiological utility of the latter in a sylvatic setting. The method is therefore of particular value in studies assessing the prevalence and diversity of ASFV in relation to the African sylvatic tick vector and holds potential for investigating the role of alternative tick species in virus maintenance and transmission.  相似文献

The influence of salinity on life-history traits was tested using two adjoining West African estuaries: the Gambia with a 'normal' salinity gradient (salinity always <40 and decreasing from the mouth upstream) and the Sine Saloum (Senegal) with an inverse gradient (from 35 at the estuary mouth up to >130 in the upper reaches). The breeding seasons and subsequent fork length ( L F) at first maturity ( L F50) were estimated for different fish species reproducing both in the Sine Saloum and in the Gambia River estuaries using a database built from experimental fish samplings between 1990 and 2003 with a purse seine (30 locations in the Sine Saloum and 44 in the Gambia). The database contained 30 553 individuals belonging to 60 different species among which only 20 species reproduced in both estuaries. The breeding seasons peaked just before, or at the beginning of the rainy season (June to July), and there were almost no sexually mature fishes at the beginning of the dry season (November to December). Patterns of differences between L F50 of the two estuaries did not follow a general trend (positive or negative), but varied in the same way for females and males of a given species. The L F50 was only systematically reduced with increasing salinity in species living in high-salinity waters (>70). For species living below 70, differences in sizes at first maturity between the two estuaries did not show any clear relationship with salinity. The smallest mature individual found in an environment was a good indicator of the size at first maturity reached in a particular ecosystem because the trend of the species differences between the two ecosystems generally followed that of the differences in size at maturity.  相似文献

Ionizing radiation damage to the genome of a non-cycling mammalian cell is analyzed using continuous time Markov chains. Immediate damage induced by the radiation is modeled as a batch Poisson arrival process of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs). Different kinds of radiation, for example gamma rays or alpha particles, have different batch probabilities. Enzymatic modulation of the immediate damage is modeled as a Markov process similar to the processes described by the master equation of stochastic chemical kinetics. An illustrative example is the restitution/complete exchange model, which postulates that radiation induced DSBs can subsequently either undergo enzymatically mediated repair (restitution) or can participate pairwise in chromosome exchanges, some of which make irremediable lesions such as dicentric chromosome aberrations. One may have rapid irradiation followed by enzymatic DSB processing or have prolonged irradiation with both DSB arrival and enzymatic DSB processing continuing throughout the irradiation period. A complete solution of the Markov chain is known for the case that the exchange rate constant is negligible so that no irremediable chromosome lesions are produced and DSBs are the only damage to the genome. Using PDEs for generating functions, a perturbation calculation is made assuming the exchange rate constant is small compared to the repair rate constant. Some non-perturbative results applicable to very prolonged irradiation are also obtained using matrix methods: Perron-Frobenius theory, variational methods and numerical approximations of eigenvalues. Applications to experimental results on expected values, variances and statistical distributions of DNA lesions are briefly outlined.Continuous time Markov chain models are the most systematic of those current radiation damage models which treat DSB-DSB interactions within the cell nucleus as homogeneous (e.g. ignore diffusion limitations). They contain most other homogeneous models as special cases, limiting cases or approximations. However, applying the continuous time Markov chain models to studying spatial dependence of DSB interactions, which is generally believed to be very important in some situations, presents difficulties.  相似文献

Background and Aims Ovary abortion can occur in maize(Zea mays) if water deficits lower the water potential (w) sufficientlyto inhibit photosynthesis around the time of pollination. Theabortion decreases kernel number. The present work exploredthe activity of ovary acid invertases and their genes, togetherwith other genes for sucrose-processing enzymes, when this kindof abortion occurred. Cytological evidence suggested that senescencemay have been initiated after 2 or 3 d of low w, and the expressionof some likely senescence genes was also determined. • Methods Ovary abortion was assessed at kernel maturity.Acid invertase activities were localized in vivo and in situ.Time courses for mRNA abundance were measured with real timePCR. Sucrose was fed to the stems to vary the sugar flux. • Key Results Many kernels developed in controls but mostaborted when w became low. Ovary invertase was active in controlsbut severely inhibited at low w for cell wall-bound forms invivo and soluble forms in situ. All ovary genes for sucroseprocessing enzymes were rapidly down-regulated at low w exceptfor a gene for invertase inhibitor peptide that appeared tobe constitutively expressed. Some ovary genes for senescencewere subsequently up-regulated (RIP2 and PLD1). In some genes,these regulatory changes were reversed by feeding sucrose tothe stems. Abortion was partially prevented by feeding sucrose. • Conclusions A general response to low w in maize ovarieswas an early down-regulation of genes for sucrose processingenzymes followed by up-regulation of some genes involved insenescence. Because some of these genes were sucrose responsive,the partial prevention of abortion with sucrose feeding mayhave been caused in part by the differential sugar-responsivenessof these genes. In control programs for vectorial transmission of Chagas' disease, conventional microscopic procedures are generally performed to determine baseline levels of infectivity of vectors. Reported here are data using Polymerase Chain Reaction in the detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in Triatoma dimidiata, one of the principal vectors of Chagas' disease in Ecuador. The microscopy and PCR techniques showed a high percentage of vector infection in Pedro Carbo, province of Guayas (Ecuador), with 44.16% and 46.13% positive insects, respectively. This contrasted with the very low Chagas seropositivity recorded (0.5%). Since T. dimidiata was the only vector of the Chagas' disease found in Pedro Carbo and looking at the vector behavior, our data suggest that despite the high T. dimidiata infection, the low Chagas seropositivity detected is closely associated with the epidemiological and ecological context of T. dimidiata in Pedro Carbo.  相似文献

 The individual rate constants for intramolecular electron transfer (IET) between the MoVIFeII and MoVFeIII forms of chicken liver sulfite oxidase (SO) have been determined at a variety of pH values, and at high and low anion concentrations. Large anions such as EDTA do not inhibit IET as dramatically as do small anions such as SO4 2– and Cl, which suggests that specific anion binding at the sterically constrained Mo active site is necessary for IET inhibition to occur.IET may require that SO adopt a conformation in which the Mo and Fe centers are held in close proximity by electrostatic interactions between the predominantly positively charged Mo active site, and the negatively charged heme edge. Thus, small anions which can fit into the Mo active site will weaken this electrostatic attraction and disfavor IET. The rate constant for IET from FeII to MoVI decreases with increasing pH, both in the presence and absence of 50 mM SO4 2–. However, the rate constant for the reverse process exhibits no significant pH dependence in the absence of SO4 2–, and increases with pH in the presence of 50 mM SO4 2–. This behavior is consistent with a mechanism in which IET from MoV to FeIII is coupled to proton transfer from MoV–OH to OH, and the reverse IET process is coupled to proton transfer from H2O to MoVI=O. At high concentrations of small anions, direct access of H2O or OHto the Mo-OH will be blocked, which provides a second possible mechanism for inhibition of IET by such anions. Inhibition by anions is not strictly competitive, however, and Tyr322 may play an important intermediary role in transferring the proton when an anion blocks direct access of H2O or OH to the Mo-OH. Competing H-bonding interactions of the Mo-OH moiety with Tyr322 and with the anion occupying the active site may also be responsible for the well-known equilibrium between two EPR-distinct forms of SO that is observed for the two-electron reduced enzyme. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the content of various types of myosin heavy chain isoforms (MyHC) in the vastus lateralis muscle and pulmonary oxygen uptake during moderate power output incremental exercise, performed at low and at high pedalling rates. Twenty one male subjects (mean +/- SD) aged 24.1 +/- 2.8 years; body mass 72.9 +/- 7.2 kg; height 179.1 +/- 4.8 cm; BMI 22.69 +/- 1.89 kg.m(-2); VO2max 50.6 +/- 5.3 ml.kg.min(-1), participated in this study. On separate days, they performed two incremental exercise tests at 60 rev.min(-1) and at 120 rev.min(-1), until exhaustion. Gas exchange variables were measured continuously breath by breath. Blood samples were taken for measurements of plasma lactate concentration prior to the exercise test and at the end of each step of the incremental exercise. Muscle biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis muscle, using Bergstr?m needle, and they were analysed for the content of MyHC I and MyHC II using SDS--PAGE and two groups (n=7, each) were selected: group H with the highest content of MyHC II (60.7 % +/- 10.5 %) and group L with the lowest content of MyHC II (27.6 % +/- 6.1 %). We have found that during incremental exercise at the power output between 30-120 W, performed at 60 rev.min(-1), oxygen uptake in the group H was significantly greater than in the group L (ANCOVA, p=0.003, upward shift of the intercept in VO2/power output relationship). During cycling at the same power output but at 120 rev.min(-1), the oxygen uptake was also higher in the group H, when compared to the group L (i.e. upward shift of the intercept in VO2/power output relationship, ANCOVA, p=0.002). Moreover, the increase in pedalling rate from 60 to 120 rev.min(-1) was accompanied by a significantly higher increase of oxygen cost of cycling and by a significantly higher plasma lactate concentration in subjects from group H. We concluded that the muscle mechanical efficiency, expressed by the VO2/PO ratio, during cycling in the range of power outputs 30-120 W, performed at 60 as well as 120 rev.min(-1), is significantly lower in the individuals with the highest content of MyHC II, when compared to the individuals with the lowest content of MyHC II in the vastus lateralis.  相似文献

Therefore, we determined elongation rates of the roots, stems, leaves, and styles (silks) of maize (Zea mays L.) as soil water was depleted. The w was measured in the region of cell expansion of each organ. The complicating effects of transpiration were avoided by making measurements at the end of the dark period when the air had been saturated with water vapor for 10 h and transpiration was less than 1% of the rate in the light. Growth was inhibited as the w in the region of cell expansion decreased in each organ. The w required to stop growth was-0.50,-0.75, and-1.00 MPa, in this order, in the stem, silks, and leaves. However, the roots grew at these w and ceased only when w was lower than-1.4 MPa. The osmotic potential decreased in each region of cell expansion and, in leaves, roots and stems, the decrease was sufficient to maintain turgor fully. In the silks, the decrease was less and turgor fell. In the mature tissue, the w of the stem, leaves and roots was similar to that of the soil when adequate water was supplied. This indicated that an equilibrium existed between these tissues, the vascular system, and the soil. At the same time, the w was lower in the expanding regions than in the mature tissues, indicating that there was a w disequilibrium between the growing tissue and the vascular system. The disequilibrium was interpreted as a w gradient for supplying water to the enlarging cells. When water was withheld, this gradient disappeared in the leaf because w decreased more in the xylem than in the soil, indicating that a high flow resistance had developed in the xylem. In the roots, the gradient did not decrease because vascular w changed about the same amount as the soil w. Therefore, the gradient in w favored water uptake by roots but not leaves at low w. The data show that expansion growth responds to low w differently in different growing regions of the plant. Because growth depends on the maintenance of turgor for extending the cell walls and the presence of w gradients for supplying water to the expanding cells, several factors could have been responsible for these differences. The decrease of turgor in the silks and the loss of the w gradient in the leaves probably contributed to the high sensitivity of these organs. In the leaves, the gradient loss was so complete that it would have prevented growth regardless of other changes. In the roots, the maintenance of turgor and w gradients probably allowed growth to continue. This difference in turgor and gradient maintenance could contribute to the increase in root/shoot ratios generally observed in water-limited conditions.Symbols s osmotic potential - w water potential  相似文献
