The handicap principle is a simple but powerful metaphor that has had a major impact on how biologists study and understand sexual selection. Here, I show that its application to signalling in sexual selection is not a valid generalization from its roots in economics. Although some signalling systems, with additive costs and benefits, have solutions that resemble sports handicaps, the signalling in sexual selection has multiplicative costs and benefits, and solutions that do not resemble sports handicaps. The sports analogy is technically incorrect, metaphorically misleading and a poor guide for empirical research on the signalling in sexual selection. The evolution of sexually selected signals is not a missing piece of Darwin's puzzle; it is an integral piece of the process of evolution by natural selection, and it should be approached with the same tools that we bring to bear on the evolution of other correlated traits involved in social interactions.  相似文献

Animal signals may result from construction behaviour and can provide receivers with essential information in various contexts. Here we explore the potential benefits of extended phenotypes with a signalling function as compared to bodily ornaments and behavioural displays. Their independence of the body, their physical persistence and the morphological and cognitive conditions required for their construction allow unique communication possibilities. We classify various levels of information transfer by extended phenotype signals and explore the differences between secreted signals and signals resulting from collection and construction, which usually involve higher behavioural complexity. We examine evolutionary pathways of extended phenotypes with a signalling function with help of a comparative evaluation and conclude that often constructions first provide a direct fitness benefit, with a signalling function becoming more and more prominent during evolutionary progression. The abundance and variability of extended phenotypes as signals is impressive and provides unique possibilities for animal communication research.  相似文献

The discovery of the second-messenger functions of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and diacylglycerol, the products of hormone-stimulated inositol phospholipid hydrolysis, marked a turning point in studies of hormone function. This review focuses on the myo-inositol moiety which is involved in an increasingly complex network of metabolic interconversions, myo-Inositol metabolites identified in eukaryotic cells include at least six glycerophospholipid isomers and some 25 distinct inositol phosphates which differ in the number and distribution of phosphate groups around the inositol ring. This apparent complexity can be simplified by assigning groups of myo-inositol metabolites to distinct functional compartments. For example, the phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase pathway functions to generate inositol phospholipids that are substrates for hormone-sensitive forms of inositol-phospholipid phospholipase C, whilst the newly discovered phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway generates lipids that are resistant to such enzymes and may function directly as novel mitogenic signals. Inositol phosphate metabolism functions to terminate the second-messenger activity of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, to recycle the latter's myo-inositol moiety and, perhaps, to generate additional signal molecules such as inositol 1,3,4,5-tetrakisphosphate, inositol pentakisphosphate and inositol hexakisphosphate. In addition to providing a more complete picture of the pathways of myo-inositol metabolism, recent studies have made rapid progress in understanding the molecular basis underlying hormonal stimulation of inositol-phospholipid-specific phospholipase C and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate-mediated Ca2+ mobilisation.  相似文献

Honest-signalling theory asserts that threat displays reliably advertise attributes that influence fighting success. Endurance, as measured by treadmill performance, predicts the outcome of agonistic interactions among lizards. If threat displays in lizards function to advertise endurance capacity then variation in threat displays should correlate with endurance. I tested this prediction for the duration of threat posturing in male side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) and examined whether threat displays act as quality handicaps, reliable signals that expend the attribute that is advertised. Individual variation in the duration of threat posturing correlated with endurance, while an experimental reduction of endurance diminished the duration of threat posturing. As expected of a quality handicap, endurance fell below baseline after display production. A restriction of aerobic metabolism can account for this effect. In threat posturing, lateral compression of the thorax may interfere with respiration or with circulation, limiting aerobic metabolism and causing a compensatory increase in anaerobic metabolism, thereby generating lactate and diminishing locomotor capacity. Concentrations of lactate measured after display production were higher than baseline, consistent with the proposed mechanism. By restricting aerobic metabolism, the threat posture can act as a quality handicap, simultaneously advertising and expending the endurance capacity of displaying lizards.  相似文献

Workers in both animal communication and behavioral ecology have long been interested in animal signals. Animal-communication researchers often have a background in ethology or comparative psychology, and place priority on signal analysis, whereas modern behavioral ecologists are concerned with the effects of natural selection on the exaggeration or development of a trait. Although the two fields examine the same problems, this division has hindered the solution of the problems themselves. Recent theoretical and empirical work has started to bridge the gap, but several important questions, particularly regarding sexual selection, have remained unanswered. Here I examine the differences in these two approaches to the study of animal signals, and suggest additional areas that would benefit by combining the two viewpoints.  相似文献

Within a general framework of handicap signalling it was proposed that threat displays are handicaps, they can work only if they put the signaller at a disadvantage, which is only acceptable to honest signallers. The aim of the present article is to investigate this proposal with the help of a simple game-theoretical model. It was found: (1) that the use of cost-free signals is an ESS against the invasion of handicapped signals even if cheating is played as part of a mixed strategy in the population; (2) that the use of handicaps may be an ESS against cost-free signals but only if we assume that the invading cost-free signal is not accepted by weak individuals as a signal of strength; (3) that the establishment of a handicapped signal in the first place is an unresolved problem, because both cost free signals and negative-handicaps are evolutionarily stable against the invasion of handicaps; (4) that in contrast to handicaps the use of negative-handicaps can invade a population using cost-free signals (a negative-handicap is a signal which may serve other functions as well); (5) that negative-handicaps are ESS against cost-free signals as well as against handicaps; and (6) thus, the most likely evolutionary end point is that the biggest negative-handicap would be used as a threat display. This is a posture, which prepares the animal most efficiently to fight; hence, most probably it is the initial position of the fighting technique of the given species. (7) Finally, the investigation of the threat displays of well-studied taxa (great tit, cats, dogs, and hoofed mammals) confirms that threat displays are indeed negative-handicaps. They do not put the user into a disadvantaged position, instead the initial position of the species specific fighting technique is used as a threat display as predicted by the present model.  相似文献

Colour patches are complex traits, the components of which may evolve independently through a variety of mechanisms. Although usually treated as simple, two-dimensional characters and classified as either structural or pigmentary, in reality colour patches are complicated, three-dimensional structures that often contain multiple pigment types and structural features. The basic dermal chromatophore unit of fishes, reptiles and amphibians consists of three contiguous cell layers. Xanthophores and erythrophores in the outermost layer contain carotenoid and pteridine pigments that absorb short-wave light; iridophores in the middle layer contain crystalline platelets that reflect light back through the xanthophores; and melanophores in the basal layer contain melanins that absorb light across the spectrum. Changes in any one component of a chromatophore unit can drastically alter the reflectance spectrum produced, and for any given adaptive outcome (e.g. an increase in visibility), there may be multiple biochemical or cellular routes that evolution could take, allowing for divergent responses by different populations or species to similar selection regimes. All of the mechanisms of signal evolution that previously have been applied to single ornaments (including whole colour patches) could potentially be applied to the individual components of colour patches. To reach a complete understanding of colour patch evolution, however, it may be necessary to take an explicitly multi-trait approach. Here, we review multiple trait evolution theory and the basic mechanisms of colour production in fishes, reptiles and amphibians, and use a combination of computer simulations and empirical examples to show how multiple trait evolution theory can be applied to the components of single colour patches. This integrative perspective on animal colouration opens up a host of new questions and hypotheses. We offer specific, testable functional hypotheses for the most common pigmentary (carotenoid, pteridine and melanin) and structural components of vertebrate colour patches.  相似文献

The possible use of isohematein as a biological stain is considered. Certain characteristics of the dye are discussed in relation to staining technic. A preliminary series of experiments is described. The stomach of the frog, skeletal muscle of the frog, and spinal cord of the cat were used as representative tissues. The dye has greater tinctorial power than hematoxylin (hematein) but it is not so selective for nuclei. The results at hand indicate that the dye may have some value as a differential stain for nerve cell bodies. Fibrillae in smooth muscle cells and cross striatums in skeletal muscle were also brought out.  相似文献

Samples of the material of mollusks bowls, peacock wing elements, and human horn skin have been investigated using the methods of spectroscopy, atomic-force microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermoconductance. Ordered superstructures were revealed in these objects. Evidence for effective interactions of both electromagnetic and electronic waves with these structures was obtained. It was shown that the interaction with electromagnetic waves reveals photonic properties and the interaction with electronic waves, the semiconducting properties of biological objects.  相似文献

The use of fish-parasites as biological tags may become an efficient method of tracing the origin of some migratory fish. The helminth parasites of flounders Platichthys flesus (L.) from 2 estuaries and from the sea within a 40 mile range were recorded, and an attempt was made to explain the level of infestation of each species of parasite in the 3 localities in relation to their life-history and the physical nature of the environment. The flounders from the 3 localities were shown to have dissimilar parasite-faunas, and, therefore, it was possible to characterize the parasite-fauna for each of the 3 groups of flounders. Individual fish from each locality could be recognized by its parasite-fauna and especially by the level of certain indicator-parasites. Similarly, "foreign" flounders moving into a flounder population could be picked out by the markedly different composition of their parasite-fauna. Podocotyle sp. and Zoogonoides viviparus were useful indicator-parasites in this instance.  相似文献

Plant and fungal cells are surrounded by a cell wall rich in diverse polysaccharides and proteins. It has become apparent in recent years that the carbohydrates in the cell wall function not only to maintain cell shape and integrity, but also may serve as signals in plants. This review summarizes the evidence that biologically-active oligosaccharides (oligosaccharins) released from plant or microbial cell walls can serve as signals to regulate plant defense and plant growth and development. The oligosaccharins discussed include the fungal-derived hepta-β-glucoside and the plant cell wall-derived oligogalacturonides and xyloglucans. Possible mechanisms by which oligosaccharins may exert their effects on plant cells are discussed.  相似文献

Pathogenic microbes and their hosts have acquired complex signalling mechanisms to appraise themselves of the environmental milieu in the ongoing battle for survival. Several recent studies have implicated oxylipins as a novel class of host-microbe signalling molecules. Oxylipins represent a vast and diverse family of secondary metabolites that originate from the oxidation or further conversion of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Among the microbial oxylipins, the fungal oxylipins are best characterized and function as hormone-like signals that modulate the timing and balance between asexual and sexual spore development in addition to toxin production. Coupled with other studies that implicate a role for fungal oxylipins in pathogenesis by Aspergillus and Candida spp., these results suggest that host and microbial oxylipins might interfere with the metabolism, perception or signalling processes of each other.  相似文献
