The pervasive use of ecological indices is increasingly requiring actions of harmonisation. Specifically, within the EU Water Framework Directive, an important effort in methods intercalibration is being done. However, a significant limitation in comparability assessment arises from the datasets used, which have different geographic origins. The purpose of our study was to perform an experimental intercalibration, where data were collected specifically on a set of common sites and following all the requirements of the methods being assessed. Three indices based on the marine angiosperm Posidonia oceanica, the POMI, the BiPo and the PoSte, were applied to sites in three different geographical areas of the western Mediterranean: Catalonia, Corsica and Southern Italy (Ischia), distant between hundreds and more than thousands of kilometers. Two indices, POMI and BiPo, showed not only a very good relationship with human pressures (measured on a common scale for all sites) but also a high comparability, in all aspects investigated. The differences found for the third one (PoSte) are hypothesised as being due to a different rationale used to define reference conditions, the different metrics used in the index, and in particular to a different definition of ecological status in relation to the time scale of the response to anthropogenic pressures. Our study demonstrates that indices with very different approaches can provide fully reliable and comparable results. 相似文献

In the search for new food sources that contribute to the optimization of livestock production this paper discusses the possibility of using waste (called banquettes) of a marine plant commonly found on the Mediterranean coasts: Posidonia oceanica. The idea stems from the use of a waste that in summertime generates large costs because it is considered bothersome on the beaches. Thus, tons and tons of residues are collected each year from the beach, being destined for incineration. However, alternative uses for these residues are suggested, such as forage that is particularly relevant for the Mediterranean coast, where the weather does not support abundant grass growth. With this purpose, samples of banquettes of P. oceanica from six different points of a touristic place located in the Murcia Region (S.E. of Spain) were collected in April 2012 on the same day directly from the beach above the water line, washed with distilled water and sun-dried for 48 h. Approximately 500 g of each sample of plant material was chopped and two subsamples of 200 g each were placed in airtight plastic containers and sent to the laboratory for mineral and chemical analysis. This report provides data on the nutritional composition of P. oceanica such as mineral contents (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) and chemical composition (ash, CP, ether extract (EE), NDF and ADF, respectively) and ADL. Finally, the in sacco rumen disappearance of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), CP and NDF were studied. Our results showed that minerals, except for Fe, where within the range of values reported for P. oceanica in other parts of the Mediterranean region. Given the high Fe content further studies assessing the antagonic Fe–Cu interaction and its effect on animal health should be addressed. In relation to chemical composition, it is clear that this seagrass is a poor protein source and has levels of DM degradability at 24 h, similar to those obtained for cereal straw. The information summarized here shows some potential for the use of banquettes of P. oceanica as forage source in ruminant nutrition. 相似文献

Phylogeographic studies of animals with low vagility and restricted to patchy habitats of the supralittoral zone, can uncover unknown diversity and shed light on processes that shaped evolution along a continent’s edge. The Pacific coast between southern California and central Mexico, including the megadiverse Gulf of California, offers a remarkable setting to study biological diversification in the supralittoral. A complex geological history coupled with cyclical fluctuations in temperature and sea level provided ample opportunities for diversification of supralittoral organisms. Indeed, a previous phylogeographic study of Ligia, a supralittoral isopod that has limited dispersal abilities and is restricted to rocky patches, revealed high levels of morphologically cryptic diversity. Herein, we examined phylogeographic patterns of Tylos, another supralittoral isopod with limited dispersal potential, but whose habitat (i.e., sandy shores) appears to be more extensive and connected than that of Ligia. We conducted Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. These analyses revealed multiple highly divergent lineages with discrete regional distributions, despite the recognition of a single valid species for this region. A traditional species-diagnostic morphological trait distinguished several of these lineages. The phylogeographic patterns of Tylos inside the Gulf of California show a deep and complex history. In contrast, patterns along the Pacific region between southern California and the Baja Peninsula indicate a recent range expansion, probably postglacial and related to changes in sea surface temperature (SST). In general, the phylogeographic patterns of Tylos differed from those of Ligia. Differences in the extension and connectivity of the habitats occupied by Tylos and Ligia may account for the different degrees of population isolation experienced by these two isopods and their contrasting phylogeographic patterns. Identification of divergent lineages of Tylos in the study area is important for conservation, as some populations are threatened by human activities. 相似文献

The maximum size and age that clonal organisms can reach remains poorly known, although we do know that the largest natural clones can extend over hundreds or thousands of metres and potentially live for centuries. We made a review of findings to date, which reveal that the maximum clone age and size estimates reported in the literature are typically limited by the scale of sampling, and may grossly underestimate the maximum age and size of clonal organisms. A case study presented here shows the occurrence of clones of slow-growing marine angiosperm Posidonia oceanica at spatial scales ranging from metres to hundreds of kilometres, using microsatellites on 1544 sampling units from a total of 40 locations across the Mediterranean Sea. This analysis revealed the presence, with a prevalence of 3.5 to 8.9%, of very large clones spreading over one to several (up to 15) kilometres at the different locations. Using estimates from field studies and models of the clonal growth of P. oceanica, we estimated these large clones to be hundreds to thousands of years old, suggesting the evolution of general purpose genotypes with large phenotypic plasticity in this species. These results, obtained combining genetics, demography and model-based calculations, question present knowledge and understanding of the spreading capacity and life span of plant clones. These findings call for further research on these life history traits associated with clonality, considering their possible ecological and evolutionary implications. 相似文献

A high-resolution sedimentary sequence sampled from the Portlligat Bay (NE Iberian Peninsula) has been studied in order to assess its palaeoecological potential. This sedimentary sequence is considered a very particular one, as it is a peat-like deposit derived from the accumulation of the belowground dead parts of the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica through the last 1600 years. This study represents the first attempt to explore the palaeoecological potential of such deposits from a palynological point of view, and has allowed the reconstruction of the vegetation dynamics and changes, human impact and the palaeoclimatic characteristics, demonstrating the value of these sedimentary records in palaeopalynological studies. 相似文献

The Mediterranean Sea is a two‐basin system, with the boundary zone restricted to the Strait of Sicily and the narrow Strait of Messina. Two main population groups are recognized in the Mediterranean endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica, corresponding to the Western and the Eastern basins. To address the nature of the East–West cleavage in P. oceanica, the main aims of this study were: (i) to define the genetic structure within the potential contact zone (i.e. the Strait of Sicily) and clarify the extent of gene flow between the two population groups, and (ii) to investigate the role of present water circulation patterns vs. past evolutionary events on the observed genetic pattern. To achieve these goals, we utilized SSR markers and we simulated, with respect to current regime, the possible present‐day dispersal pattern of Posidonia floating fruits using 28‐day numerical Lagrangian trajectories. The results obtained confirm the presence of the two main population groups, without any indices of reproductive isolation, with the break zone located at the level of the Southern tip of Calabria. The populations in the Strait of Sicily showed higher affinity with Western than with Eastern populations. This pattern of genetic structure probably reflects historical avenues of recolonization from relict glacial areas and past vicariance events, but seems to persist as a result of the low connectivity among populations via marine currents, as suggested by our dispersal simulation analysis. 相似文献

In order to detect the influence of seagrass, the most important habitats of shallow soft-bottom along the Mediterranean coast, on spatial distribution of epifauna, four different types of habitat were sampled: Posidonia oceanica, Cymodocea nodosa, edge of Posidonia meadow and sandy bottoms. Sampling was carried out, using the hand net method, in various random sites and at different times (April 95, August 95 and February 96) on the Alicante coast (SE Spain). A double taxonomic approach was used in order to detect spatial and temporal changes in the abundance of the main taxonomic groups and amphipod species. The differences among habitats were detected by non-parametric multidimensional scaling (MDS) for community structure and by analysis of variance for groups and amphipod populations. The community structure defined by the abundance of taxonomic groups was not significantly modified by the habitats. Single abundance of taxonomic groups also had no significant preference for the type of habitat except in the case of Acari, a group linked to Posidonia. However, certain trends of preference, such as mysids on Posidonia edge and isopods on Cymodocea, were detectable. On other hand, the amphipod assemblage showed important differences among habitats. Some species changed significantly in abundance depending on the habitat considered, e.g. Dexamine spiniventris and Perioculodes longimanus. It was possible to conclude that there is an important influence of Posidonia and Cymodocea on epifauna distribution by diversification of habitat structure on sandy bottoms, but it was more important at the species level than when considering taxonomic groups. Furthermore, sandy bottoms and the meadow edges had a relatively high importance on fauna distribution, depending on taxa and the period of the year. 相似文献

Previous research has indicated that many rocky intertidal macrophyte communities in southern California, and other locations around the world, have shifted from larger, highly productive, fleshy seaweeds toward a smaller, less productive, disturbance‐tolerant flora. In widespread decline are ecologically important, canopy‐forming, brown seaweeds, such as the southern California rockweed species Silvetia compressa. Restoration efforts are common for depleted biogenic species in other habitats, but restoration within rocky intertidal zones, particularly on wave‐exposed coasts, has been largely unexplored. In two phases, we attempted to restore Silvetia populations on a southern California shore by transplanting live plants and experimentally investigating factors that affect their survival. In Phase I, we implemented a three‐way factorial design where juvenile Silvetia thalli were transplanted at four sites with a combination of simulated canopy and herbivore exclusion treatments. Transplant survival was low, although enhanced by the presence of a canopy; site and herbivore presence did not affect survival. In Phase II, we used a two‐way factorial design, transplanting two size classes of rockweeds (juveniles and reproductive adults) on horizontal and partially shaded, north‐facing vertical surfaces at a target location where this rockweed has been missing since at least the 1970s. Transplant survival was moderate but lower than natural survival rates. Larger thalli exhibited significantly higher survival rates than smaller thalli in both the transplanted and naturally occurring populations, particularly on vertical surfaces. Higher mortality on horizontal surfaces may have been due to differences in desiccation stress and human trampling. Transplanting reproductive adults resulted in the subsequent recruitment of new individuals. 相似文献

The methodological advances include development of microtechniques for sample handling, and recording of the time profile of the light emission by photon counting in connection with multichannel techniques. The amount of ATP in isolated single cells of the microorganisms Paramecium, Peridinium, and of macrophages from the abdominal cavity of mice were assayed. Interannual changes in leaf production and rhizome elongation rates of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica have been evaluated by means of reconstructive methods at the Travello meadow (Ligurian Sea, NW Mediterranean, Italy) to provide evidence of responses to the putative impact of a beach replenishment made with terrigenous materials in 1993. Two additional meadows (Genoa-Quinto and Noli) were sampled as controls. An asymmetrical sampling design ('beyond BACI': Before/After, Control/Impact) was thus used to detect the impact on the basis of a single sampling as dating methods obviated the lack of pre-impact data. At all three meadows investigated, leaf production and rhizome elongation rates were reconstructed for 12 previous years (from 1988 to 1999). A marked decrease in the leaf production rate (around 20%) was assessed only at Travello immediately after the putative disturbance. Control meadows, instead, did not display any significant variations in the pattern of change of this variable from before to after the putative impact. With regard to rhizome growth rates, no significant changes in space and time attributable to the putative impact have been detected. The present data also suggest that the impact studied may be considered as a pulse disturbance, since leaf production appeared to recover over a comparatively short-time scale (around 2-3 years) if compared to the low turn-over and high longevity of P. oceanica. The high potential of asymmetrical sampling designs in combination with dating methods is discussed in the light of the results presented here. 相似文献

Site saturation mutagenesis has been carried out at Ala-237 in RTEM-1 beta-lactamase to assess the role of this site in modulating differences in specificity of beta-lactamases for penams vs. cephems as substrates. (An Ala-237 Thr mutation had previously been shown to increase activity on cephems by about 30-80%.) Screening of all 19 possible mutants on penams and cephems revealed the even more active Ala-237 Asn mutant. Detailed kinetic analysis shows that this mutant has about four times the activity toward cephalothin and cephalosporin C as the wild-type enzyme. Both mutations reduce the activity toward penams to about 10% that of RTEM-1 beta-lactamase and lower by about 5 degrees C the temperature at which the enzyme denatures. Functional properties of the other mutants have also been surveyed. The most interesting aspect of these results is that two quite disparate amino acids, threonine and asparagine, when introduced for Ala-237, cause such similar changes in enzyme specificity while more similar residues do not alter the catalytic properties of the enzyme to such a significant degree. 相似文献

Tooth marks on sandstone in an area of the Cerrado Biome are reported, indicating geophagy. The tooth marks were found on reddish sandstones cropping out in a pasture environment with typical components of the Cerrado Biome, in the Municipality of Campina Verde, Triângulo Mineiro region (west Minas Gerais State, Brazil). Studies have shown that the soil of the Cerrado is acid, with a low concentration of nutrients and minerals (also present in the plants living on this environment), which usually produce an alimentary deficiency in herbivorous animals. Therefore, these tooth marks indicate geophagy, in order to extract extra minerals from these sandstone levels, which have a high concentration of calcium carbonate and iron. The tooth marks consist of two parallel concave grooves and a medial prominent crest which results from the action of the incisors of mammals. Although the identification of the gnawing species for these sets of tooth marks are estimates at best, after wide comparisons we tentatively suggest that the tooth marks are most likely the result of the action of the incisors of rodents, such as Dasyprocta or Coendou. 相似文献

Measurements of core temperature (Tc) at different sites produce on some occasions different cooling curves in cold-exposed humans, suggesting that the corresponding thermometric heat debts (HD) could be equally different when calculated by conventional methods [via the change in either Tc or mean body temperature (Tb)]. The present study also compared these thermometric HD values with the calorimetric HD obtained by partitional calorimetry (S). Nine subjects who showed similar initial but different final Tc [rectal (Tre) and auditory canal temperatures (Tac)] during nude cold exposure (2 h at 1 degrees C at rest) were used. Tc-derived HD corresponded to a heat gain of 12 +/- 21 kJ and an HD of 78 +/- 20 kJ with use of Tre and Tac, respectively, whereas the Tb-derived HD varied from 266 +/- 35 to less than or equal to 1,479 +/- 71 kJ with the use of various well-known Tb weighing coefficients. In contrast, S corresponded to 504 +/- 79 kJ, a level that could have been obtained only if the thermoneutral/cold Tb weighing coefficients had been 0.818/0.818 for Tre and 0.865/0.865 for Tac. The results demonstrate that calculation by conventional methods can markedly overestimate or underestimate HD. These differences could not be explained by the site chosen to represent Tc, inasmuch as about the same effect was observed with use of either Tre or Tac. It is concluded that the thermometric value of HD in the cold is not, at least under the present conditions, as accurate and reliable as S. 相似文献

Reservoirs and lakes were compared to test the hypothesis that they are similar with respect to factors driving the variation in CO(2) emissions to the atmosphere. Understanding this variation is necessary for the assessment of the contribution of these freshwater ecosystems to the global carbon cycle. This study, in contrast to previous ones, included analyses of the relationships between CO(2) emissions and microbial communities. Pooled data (lakes and reservoirs) showed that variations in CO(2) emissions were strongly related to variations in temperature, dissolved organic matter (DOM) quality, and bacterial production (BP). Results also showed that lakes were characterized by higher water temperature, lower DOM quality, larger size of Daphnia, and enriched δ(13) C zooplankton compared to reservoirs. Moreover, interactions within plankton communities and relationships between CO(2) emissions and zooplankton δ(13) C signatures differed in lakes vs. reservoirs, indicating among-system type differences in food web structure and carbon cycling. As a result of these ecosystem-type characteristics, CO(2) emission variation was mainly explained by temperature and BP in lakes, and by DOM quality and the ratio of phytoplankton biomass to microheterotroph biomass in reservoirs. These results showed that differences in temperature and DOM quality between lakes and reservoirs translate into differences in microbial interactions and ultimately in the importance of factors driving CO(2) emissions to the atmosphere. They indicated that considering microbial communities and environmental variables such as temperature and DOM quality can help improve our understanding of the variation in CO(2) emissions from freshwater ecosystems. 相似文献

Evidence is growing that forms of incivility–e.g. aggressive and disrespectful behaviors, harassment, hate speech and outrageous claims–are spreading in the population of social networking sites’ (SNS) users. Online social networks such as Facebook allow users to regularly interact with known and unknown others, who can behave either politely or rudely. This leads individuals not only to learn and adopt successful strategies for using the site, but also to condition their own behavior on that of others. Using a mean field approach, we define anevolutionary game framework to analyse the dynamics of civil and uncivil ways of interaction in online social networks and their consequences for collective welfare. Agents can choose to interact with others–politely or rudely–in SNS, or to opt out from online social networks to protect themselves from incivility. We find that, when the initial share of the population of polite users reaches a critical level, civility becomes generalized if its payoff increases more than that of incivility with the spreading of politeness in online interactions. Otherwise, the spreading of self-protective behaviors to cope with online incivility can lead the economyto non-socially optimal stationary states. JEL Codes: C61, C73, D85, O33, Z13. Mercury is a global pollutant that biomagnifies in food webs, placing wildlife at risk of reduced reproductive fitness and survival. Songbirds are the most diverse branch of the avian evolutionary tree; many are suffering persistent and serious population declines and we know that songbirds are frequently exposed to mercury pollution. Our objective was to determine the effects of environmentally relevant doses of mercury on reproductive success of songbirds exposed throughout their lives or only as adults. The two modes of exposure simulated philopatric species versus dispersive species, and are particularly relevant because of the heightened mercury-sensitivity of developing nervous systems. We performed a dosing study with dietary methylmercury in a model songbird species, the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), at doses from 0.3 – 2.4 parts per million. Birds were exposed to mercury either as adults only or throughout their lives. All doses of mercury reduced reproductive success, with the lowest dose reducing the number of independent offspring produced in one year by 16% and the highest dose, representing approximately half the lethal dose for this species, causing a 50% reduction. While mercury did not affect clutch size or survivorship, it had the most consistent effect on the proportion of chicks that fledged from the nest, regardless of mode of exposure. Among birds exposed as adults, mercury caused a steep increase in the latency to re-nest after loss of a clutch. Birds exposed for their entire lifetimes, which were necessarily the offspring of dosed parents, had up to 50% lower reproductive success than adult-exposed birds at low doses of methylmercury, but increased reproductive success at high doses, suggesting selection for mercury tolerance at the highest level of exposure. Our results indicate that mercury levels in prey items at contaminated sites pose a significant threat to populations of songbirds through reduced reproductive success. 相似文献

Climatic niche models based on native-range climatic data accurately predict invasive-range distributions in the majority of species. However, these models often do not account for ecological and evolutionary processes, which limit the ability to predict future range expansion. This might be particularly problematic in the case of invaders that occupy environments that would be considered marginal relative to the climatic niche in the native range of the species. Here, we assess the potential for future range expansion in the shrub Chromolaena odorata that is currently invading mesic savannas (>650 mm MAP) in South Africa that are colder and drier than most habitats in its native range. In a greenhouse experiment we tested whether its current distribution in South Africa can be explained by increased competitive ability and/or differentiation in drought tolerance relative to the native population. We compared aboveground biomass, biomass allocation, water use efficiency and relative yields of native and invasive C. odorata and the resident grass Panicum maximum in wet and dry conditions. Surprisingly, we found little differentiation between ranges. Invasive C. odorata showed no increased competitive ability or superior drought tolerance compared to native C. odorata. Moreover we found that P. maximum was a better competitor than either native or invasive C. odorata. These results imply that C. odorata is unlikely to expand its future range towards more extreme, drier, habitats beyond the limits of its current climatic niche and that the species’ invasiveness most likely depends on superior light interception when temporarily released from competition by disturbance. Our study highlights the fact that species can successfully invade habitats that are at the extreme end of their ranges and thereby contributes towards a better understanding of range expansion during species invasions. 相似文献

Background: A quantifiable and reliable technique for the determination of body circadian phase applicable to non-laboratory studies would allow the evaluation of circadian dysregulation. In this study we evaluated feasible methodologies to individualize whole body circadian phase in lung cancer patients. Methods: Cortisol and melatonin serum levels were measured in blood samples collected every 4 h for 24 h from eleven male controls and nine men suffering from non-small cell lung cancer. Circadian rhythmicity was evaluated and the 4-hourly fractional variations (FV) were calculated to evaluate the dynamics of the rise and fall in serum levels. Results: Overall cortisol serum levels were higher in cancer patients (p < 0.001), and lower for melatonin, but not significantly (p = 0.261). Original serum levels of cortisol and melatonin each showed a prominent 24 h oscillation in both study groups, with highest values at night for melatonin and near awakening for cortisol. Using all data after normalization to percent of individual mean, ANOVA detected a significant time-effect (p < 0.001) and cosinor analysis detected a significant 24 h rhythm (p < 0.001) in each group. Overall fractional variation (FV) levels were lower for cortisol in cancer patients and higher for melatonin, but these differences were not significant. FV levels of cortisol and melatonin each showed a prominent 24 h oscillation in both study groups, with highest values prior to darkness onset for melatonin and near mid-dark for cortisol. ANOVA also detected a significant time-effect (p < 0.002) and cosinor analysis detected a significant 24 h rhythm (p < 0.001) for FV in each group, with maximal FV preceding maximal serum levels by ~3 h for melatonin and ~5 h for cortisol. Conclusions: A chronobiological evaluation of serum levels and fractional variations for cortisol and especially melatonin is a valuable methodology to define body circadian phase in lung cancer patients. It is possible to describe the complex process of hormone secretion with a methodology that allows the definition of both temporal characteristics and dynamic components. Impact: This kind of analysis might be useful in the study of hormone secretion(s) in cancer patients and other diseases and to guide therapeutic interventions. While lung cancer patients may have a negative prognostic value based upon stage and/or other hormonal aspects of their hypothalamus–pituitary–thyroid–adrenal axis function, patients that nevertheless maintain circadian rhythmicity in key body rhythm markers may still be eligible candidates for a chronotherapeutic approach of treatment(s). 相似文献
