The effect of wood ash, sawdust, ground cocoa husk, spent grain and rice bran upon root development, ash content, pod yield and nutrient status and soil fertility for okra (Abelmoschus esculentum L NHAe 47 variety) was studied. The five organic fertilizer treatments were compared to chemical fertilizer (400kg/ha/crop NPK 15-15-15) and unfertilized controls in four field experiments replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. The results showed that the application of 6tha(-1) of plant residues increased (P<0.05) the soil N, P, K, Ca, Mg, pH, and SOM; pod N, P, K, Ca, Mg and ash; root length; and pod yield of okra in all four experiments relative to the control treatment. For instance, spent grain treatment increased the okra pod yield by 99%, 33%, 50%, 49%, 65% and 67% compared to control, NPK, wood ash, cocoa husk, rice bran and sawdust treatments respectively. In the stepwise regression, out of the total R(2) value of 0.83 for the soil nutrients to the pod yield of okra; soil N accounted for 50% of the soil fertility improvement and yield of okra. Spent grain, wood ash and cocoa husk were the most effective in improving okra pod weight, pod nutrients, ash content, root length and soil fertility whereas the rice bran and sawdust were the least effective. This was because the spent grain, wood ash and cocoa husk had lower C/N ratio and higher nutrient composition than rice bran and sawdust, thus, the former enhanced an increase in pod nutrients, composition for better human dietary intake, increased the root length, pod weight of okra and improved soil fertility and plant nutrition crop. The significance of the increases in okra mineral nutrition concentration by plant residues is that consumers will consume more of these minerals in their meals and monetarily spend less for purchasing vitamins and mineral supplement drugs to meet health requirements. In addition, the increase in plant nutrition and soil fertility would help to reduce the high cost of buying synthetic inorganic fertilizers and maintain the long term productivity of soils for sustainable cultivation of okra.  相似文献

Single node explants of ‘Baccara’ rose were fed through the basal cut surface with 14C-sucrose in agar. Accumulation of 14C-metabolites by buds is a steady process, while a quick uptake occurs in the stem piece during the initial stage of incubation suggesting a passive uptake at this stage. The uppermost 5-leaflet node buds had an initially higher 14C-uptake than the lowest bud. This difference disappeared after 2–3 days when growth started in both buds. Light enhanced uptake of 14C-sucrose by both stem pieces and buds. Accumulation of 14C-metabolites by buds was in direct relationship to buds deviation from the direction of gravity. This phenomenon was not evident in the stem part of the explant.  相似文献

The distribution of assimilates of 14CO2 in ethanol soluble and insoluble fractions was measured at 20-day intervals from 45–135 days after sowing (DAS) in chickpea (Cicer arietinum) grown at two moisture levels. The contribution of pre-flowering assimilates to pods, although very low, was higher under the stress conditions. At the time of harvest, the recovery of 14C in pods was 0.4 and 0.9% of the total 14C fed 45 DAS in soluble and 2.5 and 5.1% in insoluble fractions in control and stressed plants, respectively. The %14C received by nodules continuously decreased with increasing age of plants. Stressed plants diverted more 14C to nodules, compared to control, during vegetative and flowering stages. During active seed filling, stressed plants diverted more 14C to reproductive parts and less to nodules, compared to control. Significant amounts of 14C were retgined by the stem and leaves during the seed-filling period and it appears that there is scope for the remobilisation of pre-flowering, as well as post-flowering assimilates for seed-filling of chickpea.  相似文献

The relationship between benzyladenine and assimilate distributions in shoot tips of English Ivy (Hedera helix L.) was studied. Exogenous applications of benzyladenine resulted in small amounts of the hormone moving to the apical meristem. The large part of the recovered benzyladenine was found in the young leaves of the shoot tip. Benzyladenine increased the amount of 14C-labelled assimilates in the shoot tip, but the distribution pattern of those assimilates within the tip was like that of the untreated control.  相似文献

The metabolism of ['4C]-labelled glucose and acetate has been investigated during the early germination - before radicle emergence - of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L., cv. Val d'Orge) embryos. Similar amounts of radioactivity from both substrates were evolved as C., or incorporated into organic acids, amino acids and proteins. A large part of the [14C]-glucose was also incorporated into sucrose and polysaecharides, and a small part into the glycerol moiety of lipids. Acetate was massively incorporated into lipids, and only slightly into neutral compounds. These results show that both glucose and acetate can be utilized as respiratory substrates during early germination of lettuce embryos. Various biosynthetic pathways leading to amino acids, proteins, polysaecharides and lipids are active during this period.  相似文献

The effect of sodium and calcium on the translocation of 14C-sucrose in excised cotton roots (Gossypium birsutum) was studied. The roots were allowed to elongate in a modified Guinn's medium that was very low in calcium (6.25 × 10?2 mM) and sodium (8.70 × 10?3 mM). After a period of six days the roots were transferred to 20 × 100 mm Petri dishes that contained 10 × 40 mm Petri dishes as center wells. The roots were draped over the edge of the center well and extended into the outer dish. The outer Petri dish and its center well contained the same solution except that sucrose was supplied only in the center well. The sucrose used was spiked with uniformally labeled 14C-sucrose. Four treatments were started which varied in their Na and Ca content. Three and six day harvests were taken and the amount of 14C that had moved from the distal (in the center well) to the apical root section (in the outer dish) was determined. Increasing substrate Na or Ca caused an increase in 14C-sucrose translocation and the effects of both ions were additive by the final harvest. These results were found to be independent of treatment effects on growth and respiration of the excised roots. These data support the conclusion that Na may partially substitute for Ca in carbohydrate translocation. Thus, roots supplied the Low Ca-High Na and High Ca-Low Na treatments had equal translocation rates over a six day period. The highest translocation rate was obtained with the High Ca-High Na treatment. Data from the High Ca-High Na treatment on two successive three day periods indicate that Na may have a role in translocation other than that associated with substitution for Ca, or maintenance of tissue hydration.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that rainbow trout fed on diets containing whole protein have superior growth rates compared to fish fed on diets of similar amino acid composition but containing a high proportion of free amino acids. The influence of several nutritional factors on the uptake of radioactivity from food pellets containing either [U-I4C] protein or [U-14C] amino acids into the systemic blood of trout has been investigated. The time taken for radioactivity in the free amino acid fraction of blood to reach a peak after a meal containing [U-14C] protein had been given was much shorter, and the level of radioactivity in the blood higher, in trout with almost empty stomachs than in fish with almost full stomachs; uptake of radioactivity into blood amino acids was also more rapid and reached much higher concentrations when pellets containing [U-14C] amino acids were fed than when [U-14C] protein was fed. Incorporation of radioactivity into blood protein continued for a much longer period and reached higher levels when a pellet containing [U-14C] protein was fed than when a pellet containing [U-14C] amino acids was fed. Previous dietary history (low or high protein intake) did not appear to affect the rate of absorption of amino acids from either protein or free amino acid pellets. The uptake rates from pellets containing free amino acids could be slowed by mixing the dietary amino acids with albumin. The distribution, postabsorption, of radioactivity in the different fractions of blood and liver suggested that incorporation of carbon residues into glycogen and lipid from an amino acid diet was greater than from a protein diet. The converse was true of incorporation of radioactivity into tissue protein.  相似文献

The patterns of growth, assimilation of 14CO2 and distribution of 14C-labelled assimilate were followed for 12 wk from sowing in individual plants of Lolium perenne grown in miniswards at either low (500 plants m-2) or high (5000 plants m-2) density. At the latter density, plants were characterised by a 50% reduction in RGR, by the production of fewer tillers, especially second- and third-order tillers, and by a reduction in mean tiller weight. All the green and senescing leaves of each tiller assimilated 14CO2 and the overall assimilatory capacity of a tiller was directly related to its dry weight. At both densities the plant consisted of a main shoot and established tillers with comparable assimilatory activities and a range of developing tillers that assimilated relatively small amounts of 14CO2. As each successive primary tiller developed it was supplied with assimilate from the main shoot and the degree of support was inversely proportional to the dry weight of the tiller. At both densities it was concluded that the first primary tiller could be regarded as an independent assimilatory unit when it reached a dry weight of about 25 mg even though some import of main shoot assimilate continued until the tiller was double this weight. The supply of assimilate to the root system was greatly reduced at both densities compared with previous observations on plants grown singly.  相似文献

Dieldrin (HEOD) spread from dried residues formed from droplets of emulsions and crystalline suspensions applied to the upper surfaces of cotton leaves (Gossypium species). The amounts of radiolabelled insecticide reaching defined areas of leaf-surface bearing adhesive tape (Sellotape) were measured quantitatively by scintillation counting. Autoradiography supported these results in demonstrating the extent of insecticide movement in the leaf. Up to one-fifth of the applied dose spread more than 8 mm across the leaf surface within a day (lateral movement). Penetration to the lower surface (vertical movement) took place within 4 days, depending on the leaf thickness, which itself was greatly affected by the growing conditions. During this process some dieldrin formed a derivative, possibly a hydroxydieldrin, and some was sorbed at the sites of the lysigenous secretory glands within the leaf. Dieldrin spreads from a deposit (representing that left by a spray droplet) on cotton leaf in all directions to a greater extent and more rapidly than previously supposed.  相似文献

In the sugar beet plant ( Beta vulgaris L. ssp. altissima ) the vascular bundles of old leaves lead to the center and those of young leaves to the periphery of the storage root. Whether the flux of assimilates follows these anatomical routes was tested by applying 14CO2 for 4 h to either an old (10th) or a young (20th) leaf in intact sugar beet plants. Four-month-old plants, which had about 30 leaves, were used in the experiment. The 14C distribution in the storage root was measured by autoradiography and counting in about 20 cross and longitudinal sections per root.
About 37% of assimilated 14C from an old leaf and 23% from a young leaf were exported within 24 h. Although some 14C moved into younger leaves, most was exported into the storage root. During its rapid movement towards the root tip, which took place perferentially in the orthostichon belonging to the [14C]-treated leaf, the label spread laterally.
The autoradiograms indicate that the distribution of assimilates within the storage root is roughly determined by the course of the vascular bundles extending from the source leaf. The fine distribution, however, seems to be controlled by sucrose gradients between storage cells.  相似文献

[8-14C]Benzyladenine (BA) and [8-14C] trans-zeatin (tZ) were fed through the petiole to mature, detached green, yellow and variegated leaves of Schefflera arboricola. Recovery of radioactivity from the plant material ranged between 4.2 and 22.1%. More radioactivity was recovered when tZ was applied compared to BA. Green leaves or the green parts of variegated leaves yielded more radioactivity than the yellow leaf material. BA was metabolized much faster than the endogenous cytokinin tZ. It would appear that while lower amounts of radioactivity were present in yellow leaves, as well as in yellow parts of variegated leaves, the rate of cytokinin metabolism was nevertheless faster. Metabolites that were formed to a greater extent in these yellow parts were the nucleotides of both cytokinins. Currently it is not known whether or not cytokinins influence chlorophyll and other pigment development in chimeric variegated leaves.  相似文献

Uptake of [15N]-ammonia was more sensitive to UV-B exposure than the total 14CO2 fixation rate of Lithodesmium variabile Takano. Short-term UV-B radiation (15 min) had practically no effect on the kinetics of [15N]-ammonia, whereas there was an effect on [14C]-bicarbonate uptake rate. A significant reduction was found after 30 and 60 min UV-B stress. The time course of photosynthetic uptake of 15NH4Cl at several wavelengths was markedly depressed at shorter wavelengths (irradiation with WG 280). A short-term (11 min) exposure to ultraviolet radiation had no influence on the [14C]-labeled photosynthetic products. However, the [15N]-label of several amino acids and the ratio of [15N]-glutamine to [15N]-glutamic acid varied after irradiation with different ultraviolet wavebands. The results are discussed with reference to UV damage to the key enzymes of nitrogen metabolism.  相似文献

Field experiments were undertaken to study the pattern of distribution of photosynthate produced by the leaves and the pods of Phaseolus vulgaris (cv. Purley King) by means of the 14C technique. It was found that the UC photosynthate produced by a trifoliate leaf (38 days after anthesis) was shared almost equally between the leaf and the pod at its axil with 33–50% of the fixed 14C finding its way to the seeds in that pod. However, during the early stages of pod development (10 days after anthesis) some 13–14% of the fixed 14C was detected in the stem, indicating the inadequacy of the pod as a sink at that stage. When the pod was treated, virtually no 14C was detected in other parts of the plant. Of the 14C fixed by pod photosynthesis in the later stages (38 days after anthesis), 55–60% was translocated to the seeds within the same pod. These results indicate the importance of current photosynthesis during the pod fill stage in P. vulgaris as has been suggested in other grain legume crops.  相似文献

In seed crops of Lolium perenne, yield may be reduced by competition for a limited assimilate supply from sinks other than the ear. This study was undertaken to evaluate the priorities for allocation of assimilate within the crop from all photosynthetic sites on the main reproductive tiller after anthesis. Ear, stem and leaves were fed with 14CO2 on two occasions; the assimilatory efficiency of these sources and the magnitude and pattern of 14C-assimilate export from each was determined. The growth of each part of the main tiller and subtending tillers was also measured. Stem elongation apparently dominated the current assimilate resource and the ear did not become a net importer of assimilate until this process had ceased. Assimilate allocation to the tillers was high throughout. The nature of any competition between these sinks is discussed. When crop growth was contrasted with that in a previous year, environmental factors were implicated as determinants of priority for assimilate allocation to each sink. Sources of carbon for seed filling are also discussed as is the relevance of these findings to seed crop management.  相似文献

Abstract: Production of [14C]acetylcholine and 14CO2 was examined by using tissue prisms from neocortex, hippocampus, and striatum from rats aged approximately 5 months, 13 months, and 27 months. [14C]Acetylcholine synthesis in the striatum showed highly significant decreases with age for measurements in the presence of both 5 m m - and 31 m m -K+, contrasting with the lack of significant change in 14CO2 production in this region. The neocortex and hippocampus showed only small changes, especially when comparison was made between 13-month and senescent animals. Measurements of the release of [14C]acetylcholine and influence of atropine on this release confirmed the relative stability with age of the cholinergic system in the neocortex.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the behaviour of different legumes against salinity and water stress, thus trying to discover simultaneous adaptations to both stresses. The nitrogen fixation, transpiration, predawn leaf water potential, and stomatal response of Medicago sativa L. (cvs. Tierra de Campos and Aragon), Trifolium repens L. (cv. Aberystwyth S-184) and T. brachycalycinum Katzn. et Morley (= T. subterraneum L. cv. Clare) were compared at three levels of stress (0.05, 0.3 and 0.5 MPa of either NaCl or polyethylene glycol 6000) in nutrient solution. The plants were stressed for three days and then returned to control nutrient solution. The changes in the parameters analyzed were dependent on the proportion of stress treatments and the nature of the species, always being greater in plants from PEG than from NaCl solutions. Transfer of lucerne and subclover plants from NaCl at 0.05 MPa to a non-saline medium resulted in an increase of nitrogen fixation above the level of the non-salinized control plants, especially significant in lucerne. Analysis of possible inorganic impurities in commercial PEG suggest that such type of impurities are not responsible for the toxic effects reported. Plant damage resulting from PEG treatment was apparently due to penetrations of PEG (as determined qualitatively by using the tetraiodinebismuthic acid technique) or low-molecular organic impurities into the plant. – The results are discussed as part of the adaptation of the different species to salinity and water stress. The best performance was given by "Tierra de Campos".  相似文献
