Objective: Because post‐bariatric surgery patients undergo massive weight loss, the resulting skin excess can lead to both functional problems and profound dissatisfaction with appearance. Correcting skin excess could improve all these corollaries, including body image. Presently, few data are available documenting body image and weight‐related quality of life in this population. Research Methods and Procedures: Eighteen patients who underwent both bariatric surgery and body contouring completed our study. Both established surveys and new surveys designed specifically for the study were used to assess body perception and ideals, quality of life, and mood. Patients were surveyed at the following time‐points: pre‐body contouring (after massive weight loss) and both 3 and 6 month post‐body contouring. Statistical testing was performed using Student's t test and ANOVA. Results: The mean age of the patients was 46 ± 10 years (standard deviation). Quality of life improved after obesity surgery and was significantly enhanced after body contouring. Three months after body contouring, subjects ascribed thinner silhouettes to both current appearance and ideal body image. Body image also improved with body contouring surgery. Mood remained stable over 6 months. Discussion: Body contouring after surgical weight loss improved both quality‐of‐life measurements and body image. Initial body dissatisfaction did not correlate with mood. Body contouring improved body image but produced dissatisfaction with other parts of the body, suggesting that as patients become closer to their ideal, these ideals may shift. We further developed several new assessment methods that may prove useful in understanding these post‐surgical weight loss patients.  相似文献

Body size is widely believed to affect the occurrence of sexual maturation. Recent studies have used changes in the age-specific body size at which the probability of maturing is 50%, a feature of probabilistic reaction norms, to quantify purported evolution of life histories. However, body size results from a combination of growth rates during successive developmental stages. Therefore, to understand the evolution of the maturation schedule, it is necessary to comprehend the relationships among body size, growth history, and maturation schedule. We examined the relationships among body size, previous growth history, and maturation probability in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). In this study, previous growth history was estimated from yearly specific growth increments that provide information describing body size. Previous growth history was found to be more closely linked to maturation probability than body size. The most recent growth condition was the most important factor affecting whether a fish matured during the subsequent breeding season. Because individuals of similar body size and same age can have different growth histories, the relationship between body size and maturation probability could be plastically modified by growth history. This may violate an assumption required to infer evolution, namely that size-related maturation trends in probabilistic reaction norms are immune to growth history.  相似文献

Body growth of 137 female southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) over 1 year of age was investigated at subantarctic Macquarie Island. An asymptotic straight line, snout–tail body length of 2.57±0.03 m was estimated to be attained at 9 years of age, using a three-parameter Gompertz equation. A significant increase of approximately 0.1 m (5%) in mean body length of females between 1 and 10 years of age was estimated to have occurred between the 1950–1960s and 1990s at Macquarie Island. This is consistent with a reduction in both the rate of population decline and the age of onset of sexual maturity. Age determination using dental cementum layers and the importance of standardised measurements in pinniped growth studies are discussed.  相似文献

This study is a prospective analysis of the outcome of subpectoral breast augmentation. Forty-seven patients undergoing breast augmentation were studied. They were assessed for pectoralis muscle function, breast sensation, and body image before and after subpectoral breast augmentation with saline implants. The patients were evaluated as follows: Pectoralis function was determined by measuring maximal voluntary isometric force. Sensation was evaluated by two means: vibration and pressure. The patient's body image was assessed using the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire. Results indicated a significant change in breast sensation at 3 months postoperatively but not at 6 months. Pectoralis muscle function did not significantly change during the study period. Body image was significantly improved at both postoperative measuring periods. The authors conclude that breast augmentation results in improved body image with negligible effect on muscle or nerve function.  相似文献

Body weight and growth of European hares Lepus europaeus Pallas in relation to environmental conditions, population density, age, sex, and reproduction were studied in three populations in southern Sweden on the basis of hares shot during October-December. There were no significant differences in mean body weight of juveniles in the three areas. Differences in juvenile growth, as indicated by the correlation between eye lens weight (age indicator) and body weight, between areas and years were related to variations in nutrient conditions, in an island population it was probably also related to population density. Adult body weights did not differ between two mainland areas despite differences in food supply and population density, whereas island adult hares were, on average, significantly lighter than mainland hares. Also this difference was ascribed to nutrient conditions and/or population density. There were no significant differences in body weight between adult hares of different age classes. But reproductive females showed a significant positive correlation between number of litters produced annually and body weight. This relation indicates that reproduction is favoured by large body size and body weight, which also might explain the average higher mean body weight in females than in males. Juvenile hares showed no clear tendency in sex dimorphism of body weight.  相似文献

Body size and condition of coyotes in southern Texas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Body size and condition of coyotes (Canis latrans) from a high-density population in Webb County, Texas (USA) were analyzed for age, sex and seasonal differences during 1980 to 1986. Mean body mass was progressively greater for juvenile, yearling and adult coyotes. Males were heavier and longer than females in each age class. Indices of intraperitoneal fat deposits were similar between sexes. Juveniles continued growth from fall to spring. Adults and yearlings both lost intraperitoneal fat overwinter. Mean body mass of adults decreased overwinter but mass of yearlings did not differ significantly between fall and spring. Territorial and transient female coyotes did not differ in mean body mass, length or indices of subcutaneous fat deposits.  相似文献

Body mass changes of Eurasian lynxLynx lynx Linnaeus, 1758 kittens during the first four months of their life were studied in 1989–1999 in captivity. Four hundred thirteen records of body mass from 63 lynx kittens were analysed. The body mass of lynx kittens up to four months of age increased as a linear function with age. Daily growth rate (in grams) was minimal when the kittens were switching from milk to solid food at the age 41–60 days and was maximal at the age 61–80 days. Body mass dynamic and daily growth rates of kittens depended on the husbandry conditions of adult animals (or probably on their subspecies) and litter size, but did not depend on the sex of the kittens. Specific spontaneous fights during kittens’ ontogenesis showed the trend to affect kittens’ body mass dynamic and daily growth rate on some stages of kittens’ development.  相似文献

Growth curves are described for males, pregnant females, and non-pregnant females using morphometric measurements collected from over 18000 northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus ) shot at sea between California and the Bering Sea from 1958 to 1974. Seals of all ages experience seasonal increases and decreases in body mass and length. Seasonal fluctuations of body length may be an artefact of mass displacement caused by seasonal changes in mass. Rapid growth and gain in mass occur during a brief one to three month period as the population migrates northward through the coastal waters of northern British Columbia and Alaska on their way to the Pribilof Islands. Body mass of females and immature males is gradually lost while fasting on land and wintering along the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California. Pregnant females are both heavier and longer than non-pregnant females of the same age. Body mass in pregnant females levels off with age in contrast with the increasing mass of non-pregnant females. Growth of northern fur seals does not appear to stop at an upper asymptote, but continues throughout their life spans.  相似文献

Body size is directly linked to key life history traits such as growth, fecundity, and survivorship. Identifying the causes of body size variation is a critical task in ecological and evolutionary research. Body size variation along altitudinal gradients has received considerable attention; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we compared the growth rate and age structure of toad‐headed lizards (Phrynocephalus vlangalii) from two populations found at different elevations in the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. We used mark‐recapture and skeletochronological analysis to identify the potential proximate causes of altitudinal variation in body size. Lizards from the high‐elevation site had higher growth rates and attained slightly larger adult body sizes than lizards from the low‐elevation site. However, newborns produced by high‐elevation females were smaller than those by low‐elevation females. Von Bertalanffy growth estimates predicted high‐elevation individuals would reach sexual maturity at an earlier age and have a lower mean age than low‐elevation individuals. Relatively lower mean age for the high‐elevation population was confirmed using the skeletochronological analysis. These results support the prediction that a larger adult body size of high‐elevation P. vlangalii results from higher growth rates, associated with higher resource availability.  相似文献

During childhood, physical activity is likely the most important modifiable factor for the development of lean mass. However, the effects of normal growth and maturation must be controlled. To distinguish effects of physical activity from normal growth, longitudinal data are required. One hundred nine boys and one hundred thirteen girls, participating in the Saskatchewan Pediatric Bone Mineral Accrual Study, were repeatedly assessed for 6 yr. Age at entry was 8-15 yr. Stature, body mass, and physical activity were assessed biannually. Body composition was assessed annually by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Physical activity was determined using the physical activity questionnaires for children and adolescence. Biological age was defined as years from age of peak height velocity. Data were analyzed using multilevel random-effects models. In boys, it was found that physical activity had a significant time-dependent effect on lean mass accrual of the total body (484.7+/-157.1 g), arms (69.6+/-27.2 g), legs (197.7+/-60.5 g), and trunk (249.1+/-91.4 g) (P<0.05). Although the physical activity effects were similar in the girls (total body: 306.9+/-96.6 g, arms: 31.4+/-15.5 g, legs: 162.9+/-40.0 g, and trunk: 119.6+/-58.2 g; P<0.05), boys for the same level of activity accrued, depending on the site, between 21 and 120% more absolute lean mass (g). In conclusion, habitual physical activity had a significant independent influence on the growth of lean body mass during adolescence, once biological maturity and stature were controlled.  相似文献

We biometrically analyzed the body weight growth data of new-born squirrel monkeys, obtained during the nursing period from 0 to 12 weeks of age. Body weight (y in grams) could be expressed as a function of birth weight (a in grams) and age (x in weeks) by the following equation: y = a + b x, where b indicates growth rate. This equation corresponded significantly with actual growth curves (R2 = 0.96). The frequency distribution of b values was demonstrated to be abnormal distribution. This value was used to judge whether the body weight growth of each monkey was normal or abnormal. The lower control limit (LCL) was calculated by using a linear equation with the b value of 9.07 (M-1.25 x S.D.) and each birth weight. For the monkeys whose body weight was above the LCL during the first three weeks after birth, it was determined whether the frequency of weighings could be reduced from 13 to 7. Using the same animals, no significant difference was detected between the b value estimated from 13 measurements and that estimated from 7 measurements. Thus, from the standpoint of management's policy to save labor, the frequency of weighings could be reduced. A new daily routine has been established in our primate center to save labor by reducing the number of body weighings of the many infant monkeys. In the new program, newborn monkeys whose body weight is above the LCL are weighed only 7 times during the nursing period of 12 weeks, while those whose weight is below the LCL are weighed 8 to 13 times.  相似文献

Body growth parameters, age and total length at sex differentiation were compared in three European eel Anguilla anguilla populations from Mediterranean sites with different salinity. Whilst body growth was faster in brackish than in freshwater environments, the present analysis shows that body size at sex differentiation might be a physiological invariant.  相似文献

Body size is implicated in individual fitness and population dynamics. Mounting interest is being given to the effects of environmental change on body size, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We tested whether body size and body condition are related to ambient temperature (heat maintenance hypothesis), or/and explained by variations in primary production (food availability hypothesis) during the period of body growth in songbirds. We also explored whether annual population‐level variations of mean body size are due to changes of juvenile growth and/or size‐dependent mortality during the first year. For 41 species, from 257 sites across France, we tested for relationships between wing length (n = 107 193) or body condition (n = 82 022) and local anomalies in temperature, precipitation and net primary production (NDVI) during the breeding period, for juveniles and adults separately. Juvenile body size was best explained by primary production: wings were longer in years with locally high NDVI, but not shorter in years with low NDVI. Temperature showed a slightly positive effect. Body condition and adult wing length did not covary with any of the other tested variables. We found no evidence of climate‐driven size‐dependent mortality for the breeding season. In our temperate system, local climatic anomalies explained little of the body size variation. A large part of wing length variance was site‐specific, suggesting that avian size was more dependent on local drivers than global ones. Net primary production influenced juvenile size the most through effects on body growth. We suggest that, during the breeding season in temperate systems, thermoregulatory mechanisms are less involved in juvenile growth than food assimilation.  相似文献

Background

‘Self-objectification’ is the tendency to experience one''s body principally as an object, to be evaluated for its appearance rather than for its effectiveness. Within objectification theory, it has been proposed that self-objectification accounts for the poorer interoceptive awareness observed in women, as measured by heartbeat perception. Our study is, we believe, the first specifically to test this relationship.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Using a well-validated and reliable heartbeat perception task, we measured interoceptive awareness in women and compared this with their scores on the Self-Objectification Questionnaire, the Self-Consciousness Scale and the Body Consciousness Questionnaire. Interoceptive awareness was negatively correlated with self-objectification. Interoceptive awareness, public body consciousness and private body consciousness together explained 31% of the variance in self-objectification. However, private body consciousness was not significantly correlated with interoceptive awareness, which may explain the many nonsignificant results in self-objectification studies that have used private body consciousness as a measure of body awareness.

Conclusions/Significance

We propose interoceptive awareness, assessed by heartbeat perception, as a measure of body awareness in self-objectification studies. Our findings have implications for those clinical conditions, in women, which are characterised by self-objectification and low interoceptive awareness, such as eating disorders.  相似文献

Background

Body image distortion is a central symptom of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Even if corporeal awareness is multisensory majority of AN studies mainly investigated visual misperception. We systematically reviewed AN studies that have investigated different nonvisual sensory inputs using an integrative multisensory approach to body perception. We also discussed the findings in the light of AN neuroimaging evidence.

Methods

PubMed and PsycINFO were searched until March, 2014. To be included in the review, studies were mainly required to: investigate a sample of patients with current or past AN and a control group and use tasks that directly elicited one or more nonvisual sensory domains.

Results

Thirteen studies were included. They studied a total of 223 people with current or past AN and 273 control subjects. Overall, results show impairment in tactile and proprioceptive domains of body perception in AN patients. Interoception and multisensory integration have been poorly explored directly in AN patients. A limitation of this review is the relatively small amount of literature available.

Conclusions

Our results showed that AN patients had a multisensory impairment of body perception that goes beyond visual misperception and involves tactile and proprioceptive sensory components. Furthermore, impairment of tactile and proprioceptive components may be associated with parietal cortex alterations in AN patients. Interoception and multisensory integration have been weakly explored directly. Further research, using multisensory approaches as well as neuroimaging techniques, is needed to better define the complexity of body image distortion in AN.

Key Findings

The review suggests an altered capacity of AN patients in processing and integration of bodily signals: body parts are experienced as dissociated from their holistic and perceptive dimensions. Specifically, it is likely that not only perception but memory, and in particular sensorimotor/proprioceptive memory, probably shapes bodily experience in patients with AN.  相似文献

Body shape of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) perch Perca fluviatilis , and number and size of potential predators (perch and pike Esox lucius ) were compared across five lakes in northern Sweden. Body depth and dorsal fin ray length of YOY perch differed between lakes, with high relative body depth and long dorsal fin rays found in the lakes where the number of large piscivores was the highest. The most slender fish were found in the lake where the perch population had the smallest individuals and pike occurred in very low numbers. The average body mass in YOY perch from the two lakes with highest and lowest body depth, respectively, were the same, which indicates a difference between lakes in the relation between growth in length and in depth. Both body depth and fin ray length were correlated with predation risk by pike. Fin ray length was also correlated with number of piscivorous perch. Selection for different body shapes can be caused by different biotic and abiotic factors, singly or in combination, and the results from this study indicates that predation risk is one of these factors affecting body depth and fin ray length in perch.  相似文献

Dispersal is an important mechanism in population dynamics with a sparse empirical basis. Environmental causes of dispersal may work directly or indirectly. In a population with documented negative density-dependent male dispersal, we investigated if the effect of density on dispersal was indirectly mediated through body mass. We analysed the probability of dispersal in 170 juvenile red deer males in Snillfjord municipality, Norway, during a 20-year period of rapid population growth (1977–1997). Body mass and dispersal propensity were not related. Thus, changes in population density act directly on dispersal and are not affected by body mass. Body mass-dependent dispersal occurs in species with strong antagonistic interactions and a high cost of dispersal. Our result suggests that the cost of dispersal in male red deer is low in terms of energy expenditure and survival. We conclude that the effect of body mass on dispersal is likely to vary with mating system and cost of dispersal.  相似文献

Anthropometric measurements made on 470 individual children (age 0–18 years) from a seminomadic population of Datoga pastoralists living in northern Tanzania were used to describe patterns of child growth. Comparisons with reference growth curves derived from American samples suggest that pastoral Datoga children grow poorly in this region. Body compositional changes with age differed markedly from the reference population. There were negligible fat gains through childhood, even among females. Comparison with data on other East African pastoralists showed that population growth performance is intermediate between that of nomadic and settled pastoralists. Little catch-up growth occurs during childhood, and adolescence appears to be delayed among males. The results contribute to the growing database on health indicators for African pastoralists and suggest a need for further research to investigate mechanisms for growth stunting in these populations. To place associations among body size, age at maturity, age, and reproductive traits of a long-lived organism in the context of current life history models based on the concept of norms of reaction, we examined data from a mark-recapture study of Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingi) in southeastern Michigan during 24 of the years between 1953 and 1988. Females matured between 14 and 20 years of age. Both the smallest and largest adult females in the population were reproducing for the first time in their lives. This result suggests that a combination of differences in juvenile growth rates and ages at maturity, and not indeterminate growth, are the primary cause of variation in body size among adults. Body size variation among individuals was not related to age at sexual maturity. Females that had slower growth rates as juveniles matured later at similar mean body size compared to those with more rapid growth that matured at an earlier age. As a result, a linear model of age at sexual maturity with growth rates of primiparous females between hatching and maturity was significant and negative (R2 = 0.76). Frequency of reproduction of the largest and smallest females was not significantly different. Clutch size did not vary significantly with age among either primiparous or multiparous females. Clutch sizes of primiparous females and multiparous females were not significantly different. However, older females (>55 years minimum age) reproduced more frequently than did younger females (minimum age <36 y).  相似文献
