The mollusc fauna of 64 sites in 31 tidal marshes was surveyed along a salinity gradient from freshwater to marine conditions in the river Scheldt (Belgium–The Netherlands). A total of 10649 specimens involving 31 taxa were identified. Salinity turned out to be a major factor in mollusc assemblages in the Scheldt estuary, but other factors can not be excluded. In the marine part five species were common, compared to the brackish part where only Assiminea grayana was abundant. In the freshwater zone species richness was highest (24). There was a significant correlation between flooding frequency and species richness in the tidal freshwater marsh `Durmemonding'. Finally, the survey confirmed the distribution of the amphibious hygromiid snail Pseudotrichia rubiginosa, a species which in Belgium only occurs in the marshes of the tidal freshwater part of the Scheldt and its tributaries.  相似文献

The timing of salmon migration from the estuary of the Aberdeenshire Dee into the river in relation to tidal phase and time of day was studied by combined acoustic and radio-tracking of individual fish and by analysing records of untagged fish from a resistivity fish counter 0.8 km upstream from the tidal limit. Up-estuary movements that led to river entry were predominantly nocturnal and tended to occur during the ebb tide. Penetration into the non-tidal reaches of the river also tended to occur at night, but the timing of salmon movements was no longer significantly associated with tidal phase. The tracking data suggested that the reduction in the strength of the association between salmon migration and tidal phase resulted from variability in rates of progress from the estuary to the river. This variability may have been random, or related to changes in migratory behaviour during entry to fresh water. A simulation of upstream progress by groups of salmon illustrated the decay of the relationship between salmon movements and tidal phase and the advance of the average tidal phase of observed salmon movements with increasing distance of the observation point from where movements were initiated. The magnitude of these effects depended on the average rate of upstream progress and variability in the rate of progress, being greatest when upstream progress was slow and variable. These results highlight a limitation of point observations of migration with regard to identifying environmental stimuli for migration and quantifying their effects.  相似文献

Foliar nutrient dynamics were studied at 8 forest stands (three non-tidal and five tidal) along the lower 30 km of the Apalachicola River system in Florida, USA, during 2008. At each site, we sampled canopy foliage and litterfall from three to four trees representative of the dominant overstory species. Foliage and litterfall were analyzed for a variety of elements including N and P and these data were used to examine differences in element concentrations, nutrient ratios (C:P, C:N, and N:P), nutrient use efficiency, and nutrient proficiency. Measurements of tree diameter at basal height (DBH) at each plot were used with species allometric equations to estimate forest litterfall dry weight and N and P flux in non-tidal and tidal wetlands. Both non-tidal and tidal wetlands showed evidence of P limitation based on N:P ratios, but absolute levels of P were determined to be extremely low in tidal wetlands based on higher nutrient use efficiencies (measures of both P resorption efficiency and proficiency). Differences in P concentrations and fluxes between tidal and non-tidal wetlands are probably related to longer inundation and hydrologic export observed in tidal wetlands. Using estimations of annual litterfall dry weight and nutrient concentrations, N and P flux in non-tidal swamps were 2-4 times greater than in tidal wetlands. This study demonstrates the change in nutrient dynamics as wetlands shift from tidal to non-tidal conditions.  相似文献

River regulation infrastructure has been implicated in worldwide aquatic biodiversity loss. In‐stream barriers such as weirs prevent fish migration and the impact can be particularly severe for diadromous species. Fishways are frequently installed on in‐stream barriers to reconnect migratory pathways and rehabilitate diadromous fish populations. Sequential fishways may be necessary in rivers where multiple barriers prevent migration. We monitored a coastal fish community's response to fish passage restoration at 10 predominantly low‐level weirs in the freshwater reaches of the Nepean River in southeastern Australia. Few studies have simultaneously assessed fish community passage at successive fishways within a river system. Prior to the installation of the fishways, there was a gradient of reduced species diversity in an upstream direction including the absence of many diadromous species, despite the regular inundation frequency of most weirs. Following the installation of the fishways, species diversity was still greater in the downstream monitoring sites; however, there was evidence of a positive change in fish community structure in middle and upstream sites. Most notably, three diadromous species rapidly expanded their distribution upstream and one amphidromous species expanded its downstream distribution. This study demonstrates appropriately designed successive fishways can successfully reconnect river systems for an entire fish community, encompassing species with a broad range of swimming abilities and diverse life histories.  相似文献

Fish collections on the cooling water filter screens of the Doel power plant were used to analyse temporal trends in estuarine fish populations of the upper Scheldt estuary, Belgium. Between 1991 and 2001, 62 species shared the estuary, with 15 species present at any one time. Identified were 23 marine stragglers, 16 freshwater species and four diadromous species, but their contribution to the total catch was insignificant. In terms of numbers, marine estuarine opportunists (17 species) mainly occurring as juveniles and estuarine residents (two species) were the dominant life cycle categories. Six fish species contributed to >97% of the total catch: three Pomatoschistus species [P. minutus (32%), P. microps (30%) and P. lozanoi (6%)], two Clupeidae [Clupea harengus (16%) and Sprattus sprattus (8%)] and Syngnathus rostellatus (5%). Abundance of almost all species in the estuary was highly seasonal and characterized by pronounced abundance peaks. Ordination of the data showed that variability in the temporal structure of estuarine fish community was first determined by differences in annual recruitment and then by predictable, cyclical patterns of species abundance.  相似文献

Suspended matter in the Scheldt estuary   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Scheldt estuary is characterised by a specific energy pattern resulting from the interaction of wave energy, tidal energy and river energy. It divides the estuary into three parts and governs suspended matter transport and distribution pattern. Observation of suspended matter transport shows the existence of three estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM), a marine-dominated ETM in the lower estuary at the river mouth, a river-dominated ETM in the upper estuary with suspended matter concentration reaching up to 300 mg/l, and the most important tide-dominated ETM in the middle estuary with suspended matter concentrations from several hundred milligrams per litre up to a few grams per litre. Resuspension is the dominant phenomenon in this last ETM due to the tidal related bottom scour, which is initiated when a critical erosion velocity of 0.56 m/s is exceeded. An assessment of residual current along the axis of the estuary shows distinctive pattern between the surface water flow and the near bottom water flow. Also the local morphology of the river, natural or man-made, has a prominent effect on the orientation and strength of the residual currents flowing along either side of the river or river bend. Evaluation of suspended matter concentration in relation to the current flow shows no systematic correlation either because of phenomena as scour lag and settling lag mainly in the middle estuary, or because of the current independency character of uniform-suspension mainly in the upper and lower estuary. Quantification of suspended matter load exhibits a net downstream transport from the upper estuary, a near-equilibrium sustainable status in the middle estuary and a net upstream transport of suspended matter from the lower estuary. The characteristic of suspended matter is induced by and is a function of e.g. tidal phase, spring-neap tide, longitudinal and vertical distribution mechanisms, seasons, short and long terms of anthropogenic influence and/or estuarine maintenance. Suspended matter is dominated by complex and cohesive organo-mineral aggregates. It consists of a variable amount of an inorganic fraction (average of 89%) and an organic fraction and occurs largely as flocs, the size of which is remarkably larger in the upper estuary and smallest within the ETM in the middle estuary. Independent time series measurements (1990–2000) of suspended matter property show an increasing sand fraction, a decreasing organic matter content, a rise in 13C as well as a decrease in water transparency. These independent measurements exhibit coherent consequences of estuarine maintenance operations. Maintenance dredging of the shipping channel and harbours and dumping operation in the Scheldt strengthen marine influence further landward, resulting in a sustained tidal range increment and upstream flow and transport of suspended matter.  相似文献

Landscape-scale patterns of freshwater fish diversity and assemblage structure remain poorly documented in many areas of Central America, while aquatic ecosystems throughout the region have been impacted by habitat degradation and hydrologic alterations. Diadromous fishes may be especially vulnerable to these changes, but there is currently very little information available regarding their distribution and abundance in Central American river systems. We sampled small streams at 20 sites in the Sixaola River basin in southeastern Costa Rica to examine altitudinal variation in the diversity and species composition of stream fish assemblages, with a particular focus on diadromous species. A set of environmental variables was also measured in the study sites to evaluate how changes in fish assemblage structure were related to gradients in stream habitat. Overall, fish diversity and abundance declined steeply with increasing elevation, with very limited species turnover. The contribution of diadromous fishes to local species richness and abundance increased significantly with elevation, and diadromous species dominated assemblages at the highest elevation sites. Ordination of the sampling sites based on fish species composition generally arranged sites by elevation, but also showed some clustering based on geographic proximity. The dominant gradient in fish community structure was strongly correlated with an altitudinal habitat gradient identified through ordination of the environmental variables. The variation we observed in stream fish assemblages over relatively small spatial scales has significant conservation implications and highlights the ecological importance of longitudinal connectivity in Central American river systems.  相似文献

Fish-based index of biotic integrity (F-IBI) is widely used to assess river ecosystems. With survey data from the Yellow River fishery resources in the 1980s and 2008, fish composition and abundance, vertical distribution, trophic structure, reproductive guilds and tolerance in the river’s upstream, midstream, downstream, and estuary were examined, and F-IBI systems were established for each reach to assess river ecosystem health. Results showed that compared to the 1980s, the number of fish species in 2008 sharply declined in the midstream and downstream reaches, percentage of benthic fish species decreased in upstream and estuary, the number and percentage of omnivorous species decreased in all reaches, and percentage of tolerant fish species increased 15 times in upstream but decreased in midstream and downstream. The F-IBI scores in the four reaches in the 1980s were all higher than those in 2008 and decreased from upstream to estuary; the healthy conditions indicated by F-IBI scores in the 1980s were “good,” “fair,” “poor,” and “fair” from upstream to estuary and “degraded” to “poor” in all the reaches in 2008. This indicated that the river ecosystem has degraded from the 1980s to 2008. This was also shown by variations in water chemistry.  相似文献

The post spawning behaviour of sea trout Salmo trutta was studied over a 2 year period in the river and estuary of the River Fowey, south‐west England. Forty‐five sea trout kelts were trapped immediately after spawning in December and intraperitoneally tagged with miniature acoustic transmitters. The subsequent emigration into coastal waters was monitored using acoustic receivers deployed throughout the river catchment. The levels of gill Na+K+ATPase activity in sea trout kelts sampled at the same time as the tagged fish were within the range of 2·5 to 4·5 μmol Pi per mg protein per h indicating that the post‐spawning fish were not physiologically adapted to salt water. The tagged kelts were resident in fresh water between 4 and 70 days before entering the estuary. Sixty two per cent of the tagged kelts subsequently migrated successfully into coastal waters, with a higher success rate for male fish (75%) than females (58%). There was a significant size related difference in the run‐timing of the kelts with the larger fish moving more quickly into coastal waters after spawning than smaller fish. Seaward migration within fresh water was predominantly nocturnal and generally occurred in conjunction with increasing river discharge and rising water temperature. Migration through the estuary continued to be predominantly nocturnal and occurred during an ebbing tide. Residency within the estuary varied amongst individuals although it was invariably short, with most fish moving out into coastal waters within one to two tidal cycles. Five tagged kelts returned from the coastal zone and re‐entered fresh water during April and June. Marine residence time varied between 89 and 145 days (mean 118 days) and the minimum estimated marine survival was c. 18%. One of these sea trout was subsequently recaptured after successfully spawning in the vicinity where it had been previously tagged demonstrating a degree of spawning site fidelity.  相似文献

Results of a 3-year survey (1978–1980) and review of historic trends have shown a major decline in the number of species and the distribution of submersed aquatic macrophytes in the tidal Potomac River since the early 1900's. The freshwater tidal river is essentially devoid of plants and only very sparse populations remain in the mesohaline section of the estuary. Present plant populations are largely confined to the transition-zone region where salinity instability at the fresh-to-brackish water interface is believed to reduce biotic stress on submersed vegetation. Many factors may be implicated in the loss of vegetation over major regions of the tidal Potomac River; however, long-term conditions of excessive nutrients appear to be primarily responsible for the present distribution.  相似文献

The key elements of the flow regime of the Waipara River on the east coast of New Zealand, that affected fish abundances were the timing of floods and the magnitude and duration of low flows. Generally, fish abundances were highest in early summer, and lowest at the beginning of winter. Spring floods opened the river mouth, allowing recruitment of diadromous fish species, and non‐diadromous fish species spawned after the floods in spring or early summer. Reductions in fish abundances over summer and autumn were consistent with the magnitude and duration of low flows, with significant reductions in the year of lowest flow and little change in abundance in the year when low flows were highest. Variations in fish abundances during periods of low flow were consistent with the amount of instream habitat available, such that abundances of species with high velocity preferences decreased during periods of low flow, whereas abundances of species with low velocity preferences increased.  相似文献

Worldwide, river fragmentation is primarily responsible for the decline of populations of migrating fish. In particular, anadromous fish species, which necessarily migrate to fresh water to reproduce, are endangered since many are no longer able to reach their natural spawning sites. In addition, pollution of rivers effectively prevents upstream or downstream movements and blocks access to spawning grounds. This article investigates how poor water quality interferes with the life history cycle of twaite shad Alosa fallax fallax (Lacépède, 1803), an anadromous clupeid fish, in the watershed of River Scheldt, a heavily impacted environment in West Europe. We used two models based on known ecological and environmental information to explain past and present twaite shad distribution within the watershed and to make inferences about a future population recovery and juvenile habitat value. We demonstrated that historical spawning areas satisfy water quality conditions necessary to support spawning and successful development of early life history stages of the twaite shad. However, poor water quality conditions just upstream the freshwater–saltwater boundary still act as an effective migration barrier for upstream movement. As a consequence, spawning grounds are inaccessible and the population is dominated by seasonal adults occurring in the lower estuarine part of the watershed. This article provides testable and diagnostic information to the watershed management in that it identifies habitat and water quality requirements needed to support the expected recovery of an endangered anadromous fish population. Thirteen species of fish were recorded from the non-tidal reaches of the Murray River system, southwestern Australia. Of these, nine were indigenous species. Although this system occurs in a zone of moderate to high rainfall, the species richness of this system is comparable to that of much harsher environments, such as the Canadian boreal zone or the Nevada desert. Species richness tends to increase in a downstream direction, and most changes in species composition are due to addition, rather than replacement of species. Stream order was strongly and significantly positively correlated with species richness (P < 0.001), but was in effect functioning as a composite variable. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that stream width, pH range, distance from the main stream, distance from the estuary, barriers and stream gradient together explained more than 80% of the variation in species richness. The variables, barriers, distance from the main stream and distance from the estuary, support island biogeography type explanations for variations in species richness, while the variable, stream width complies with the river continuum concept. A predictive model for species richness of any given reach of a lower west coastal stream in Australia was tried using variables that can be gathered almost entirely from detailed topographic maps and aerial photographs.  相似文献

Because of land reclamation, reinforcement of dikes, and the deepening of shipping channels, large areas of tidal marshes have been removed or eroded from the Scheldt estuary during the last two centuries. Tidal wetland restoration contributes toward compensating this loss of habitat. Not all restoration projects are meticulously planned, however; some are forced by nature. During a severe storm in 1990, a dike was breached in the brackish part of the Scheldt estuary and returned tidal influence to the Sieperda polder. In the 10 years since the dike breach, the former polder has changed into a brackish tidal marsh. Here we report on the geomorphologic and ecological developments that have taken place in the marsh. Tidal intrusion into the former polder turned crop fields into mudflats and changed pastures into salty marsh vegetation. The digging of a new creek improved marsh hydrology and enhanced tidal intrusion further into the marsh. Macrofauna typical of estuarine mudflats established rapidly in the developing marsh. Vegetation succession took place rapidly. Within 5 years, large areas of mudflats became covered with marsh vegetation. Birds characteristic of salt marshes were observed breeding or seen foraging in the marsh. The number of wading birds declined as areas of mudflat became overgrown. It is demonstrated that tidal flow is the engine to tidal marsh restoration. Tidal influence caused geomorphologic changes, which directed ecological developments in the former polder.  相似文献

Avoidance of oxygen-poor zones by fish in the Elbe River   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
For three selected weeks in July, August, and October 1985, catches from anchor net vessels at ten stations along the tidal Elbe River (northern Germany) were analyzed and related to oxygen conditions in the river. The oxygen concentrations decreased from an average of 6.6 ml/L in the estuary to an average of 1.4 mg/L upstream. Fish were found to be concentrated downstream from the low-oxygen zone and at the entrance to a shallow side arm of the main stream. Highest catches of eel were made where oxygen levels were in the range of 1.2–3 mg/L, highest catches of flounder at 3–4 mg/L, and highest catches of juvenile and adult smelt in areas with more than 5 mgO2/L. Such a situation enables fishermen to make extraordinarily high catches. It is concluded that despite high levels of toxicants, the tidal Elbe still offers living conditions adequate for the mass of fish species as long as there is a sufficient supply of oxygen.  相似文献

Macroinvertebrates were studied during the first five years after closure and freshening of the lake system Volkerak-Zoom, two lakes interconnected by a channel. Before embankment, in 1987, these lakes were part of the tidal eastern Scheldt estuary in the south-western part of the Netherlands. Four months after embankment, the first freshwater species were found. In general, the colonization process followed the same pattern as was reported for newly created reservoirs. In Lake Volkerak-Zoom differences in colonization time were observed between distinguished depth zones. Within the chironomid assemblages, dominance of Chironomus muratensis was followed by a dominance of Procladius, Glyptotendipes and Cladotanytarsus. The succession was related to changes in phytoplankton concentrations. Although in 1991 changes in macrofauna composition were less pronounced as compared to previous years, succession was still going on.  相似文献

Recruitment courses of three amphidromous sleeper species, Eleotris acanthopoma, E. melanosoma, and E. fusca, were investigated at the surf zone adjacent to the river mouth and at five stations in the Teima River on Okinawa Island, Japan. All three species occurred at the surf zone as pelagic larvae with transparent and compressed body, a conspicuous air bladder, and an emarginated caudal fin. Eleotris fusca (16.0–19.6 mm in standard length: SL) sometimes possessed a vestige of the larval chin barbel and were larger than E. acanthopoma (9.7–13.2 mm SL) and E. melanosoma (11.2–12.8 mm SL). The pelagic larvae were also collected during full tide from the lower reaches of the tidally influenced area of the river. The pelagic larvae may be carried in and out of the estuary with some tidal fluxes, and they may settle when they reach the upper tidally influenced area where the salinity becomes extremely low. Body width and pigmentation of newly settled larvae increased. E. fusca was considered to migrate upstream to the freshwater area against the flow of the river just after reaching the settled stage. After settlement, all three species became completely pigmented, the caudal fin became round in shape, and the fin ray counts became complete with growth. Also, E. acanthopoma dispersed widely to the lower part of the tidally influenced area or to the lower reaches of the freshwater area, E. melanosoma dispersed to the lower part of the tidally influenced area, and E. fusca dispersed upstream.  相似文献

A major goal of stream ecology is to identify environmental gradients that shape riverine communities. We examined the relative importance of three ecological factors that have been hypothesized to influence a longitudinal pattern of fish diversity: habitat capacity, heterogeneity and immigration of diadromous fishes. Field surveys were carried out in the entire network of the Shubuto River system, Hokkaido, Japan. A hierarchical partitioning approach revealed that distance from the sea, a proxy for immigration potential of diadromous fishes, had the greatest explanatory capacity, by which 24.9 % of variation in fish species richness was explained. Habitat capacity (approximated by catchment area) was also identified as a significant predictor of fish diversity, whereas habitat heterogeneity brought little improvement to the model performance. These results reflect the fish fauna of the Shubuto River system, in which diadromous fishes are dominant in both abundance and species richness.  相似文献

The reference condition of a river ecosystem is often used as a benchmark against which restoration activities are framed. However, the reference condition approach is not suitable for all river health assessments given undisturbed reference sites similar to a test site may not exist. We tested the ability of applying individual Species Distribution Models (SDMs) to predict the “natural” fish assemblages in a regulated coastal Australian river. Environmental data and fish collections from training sites were used to generate predictive models for 21 species. Model accuracy was high with the area under the receiver operating curve greater than 0.80 for the majority of species. The SDMs were then used to determine the natural fish assemblages and the condition of the sites in the test river was then assessed as the observed to expected species ratio (O/E). We expected that the O/E ratio would decline upstream through a series of weirs that created barriers to fish passage. Results confirmed that an inverse relationship existed between the number of weirs present on the test river and the O/E ratio, largely due to the decline in diadromous species. Our study clearly demonstrates the usefulness of the SDM approach to riverine health assessment in situations where undisturbed reference sites do not exist.  相似文献
