P. sarsi is a carnivorous calanoid commonly found in South Andes lakes. Feeding experiments were carried out in order to analyze the functional response of P. sarsi (copepodid IV to adult) on different cladoceran prey. Predation rates increased with increasing prey density up to maximum (type II) in almost cases. The highest attack coefficients were obtained when P. sarsi adults were fed with the smaller prey (C. dubia juvenile and B. longirostris). The ingestion rates of copepodid IV and CV were smaller than for the adults. The ingested biomass as a proportion of predator biomass (Be/Bp) showed an inversal relationship with the predator length. The maximum Be/Bp ratio, in both sex of P. sarsi, was achieved with C. dubia adult, the intermediate-sized prey.  相似文献

The clearance rates of 14 carbon-labelled Chlamydomonas sp. by the copepodite and adult stages of the 2 dominant species of Copepoda were studied in eutrophic Lake Aydat. They varied from 30 to 3,007 µl ind–1 h–1 for Acanthodiaptomus denticornis (mean = 600 µl ind–1 h–1) and from 20 to 1,133 µl ind–1 h–1 for Cyclops vicinus (mean = 340 µl ind–1 h–1). Their maximum assimilation efficiencies were 58% and 50%, respectively. These populations collectively could consume the available food in 4 days during September (maximum daily grazing rate = 24%). Mean individual clearance rates could be ranked Acanthodiaptomus denticornis > Ceriodaphnia quadrangula > Chydorus sphaericus > Daphnia longispina > Cyclops vicinus vicinus > Bosmina longirostris > K. cochlearis > K. quadrata and Kellicottia longispina. Like cladocerans and rotifers, the copepods living in this eutrophic lake can feed at low oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

Feeding experiments with two species of carnivorous copepod, Mesocyclops longisetus (Thiebaud) and Mesocyclops kieferi Van de Velde from Barra Bonita, a eutrophic reservoir in São Paulo, Brasil, were performed using two common types of prey: Ceriodaphnia cornuta, a cladoceran, with a mean body length of 464 µm (including spines) or 393 µm (without spines), and Brachionus calyciflorus, a rotifer with a mean body length of 350 µm (including spines) or 279 µm (without spines).Both species showed higher consumption rates on Brachionus than on Ceriodaphnia. For Mesocyclops longisetus, the average rates were: 2.19 prey ind–1 h–1 (Brachionus), and 1.30 prey ind–1 h–1 (Ceriodaphnia). For Mesocyclops kieferi, the rates were 1.85 prey ind–1 h–1 (Brachionus) and 0.60 prey ind–1 h–1 (Ceriodaphnia). Functional response curves of fourth instar larvae ofChaoborus flavicans preying on two size classes ofDaphnia longispina were examined throughout three summer seasons in a small forest lake. Data for each size class were fitted to Holling's disc equation. The parametersa (attack rate) andTh (handling time) were calculated for each prey size from these curves. Attack rate was greater and handling time was shorter for small (0.77 mm) than for large (1.82 mm)Daphnia. In 1:1 mixture of these prey size classes the predation rates ofChaoborus on smallDaphnia at prey densities above 20 l–1 were greater than predicted from the single size-class experiments. The observed predation rates on largeDaphnia were lower than predicted at all prey densities. Since both single size-class and two size-class experiments were run during the same period of time the difference in observed and predicted predation rates could not be attributed to seasonal changes in prey preference ofChaoborus larvae. In experiments with a concentrated mixture of lake zooplankton (dominated byD. longispina)Chaoborus preference forDaphnia decreased as prey body size increased. There was no obvious correlation between selectivity coefficients and size-frequency distributions ofDaphnia. The continuous bioconversion of xylose-containing solutions (obtained by acid hydrolysis of barley bran) into xylitol was carried out using the yeast Debaryomyces hansenii under microaerophilic conditions with or without cell recycle. In fermentations without cell recycle, the volumetric productivities ranged from 0.11–0.6 g l–1 h–1 were obtained for dilution rates of 0.008–0.088 h–1. In experiments performed with cell recycle after membrane separation, the optimum xylitol productivity (2.53 g l–1 h–1) was reached at a dilution rate of 0.284 h–1.  相似文献

Littoral plankton communities have rarely been included in food web dynamics and predator/prey behavior studies of planktonic communities of fresh water ecosystems. Polyphemus pediculus, a typically littoral predaceous cladoceran, is common in lakes and ponds throughout the northern temperate zone.Diel clearance rates of Polyphemus were studied with a differential count method. A multi-chambered in situ feeding trap manipulated Polyphemus densities at three levels above the control ambient densities. Polyphemus generally selected small prey (Vorticella and Keratella) over large prey (nauplii) and more vulnerable prey (Conochilus and Polyarthra) over smaller prey with long protective structures (Kellicottia). Polyphemus clearance rates were inversely correlated with body volume of prey. Polyphemus clearance rates ranged from 4.2 to 4.5 ml h–1 for Keratella and Vorticella respectively to <1 ml h–1 for copepod nauplii. Selectivity coefficients were highest for small species, Vorticella and Keratella.  相似文献

Data on phosphate excretion rates of zooplankton are based on measurements using the pelagic crustacean zooplankton of Lake Vechten and laboratory-cultured Daphnia galeata. In case of Daphnia sp we measured the effects of feeding on P-rich algae and P-poor algae (Scenedesmus) as food on the P-excretion rates at 20°C. The excretion rates of the natural zooplankton community, irrespective of the influence of the factors mentioned, varied by an order of magnitude: 0.025–0.275µg PO4-Pmg–1C in zooplankton (C zp ) h–1. The temperature accounted for about half the observed variation in excretion rates. The mean excretion rates in the lake, computed for 20°C, varied between 0.141 and 0.260 µg Pmg–1C zp h–1. Based on data of zooplankton biomass in the lake the P-regeneration rates by zooplankton covered between 22 and 239% of the P-demand of phytoplankton during the different months of the study period.In D. galeata, whereas the C/P ratios of the Scenedesmus used as food differed by a factor 5 in the experiments, the excretion rates differed by factor 3 only. Despite the higher P-excretion rates (0.258± 0.022 µg PO4-P mg–1 C h–1) of the daphnids fed with P-rich food than those fed with P-poor food (0.105 ± 0.047 µg PO4-P mg–1 C hp–1), both the categories of the animals were apparently conserving P. A survey of the literature on zooplankton excretion shows that in Daphnia the excretion rates vary by a factor 30, irrespective of the species and size of animals and method of estimation and temperature used.About two-thirds of this variation can be explained by size and temperature. A major problem of comparability of studies on P-regeneration by zooplankton relates to the existing techniques of P determination, which necessitates concentrating the animals several times above the in situ concentration (crowding) and prolonged experimental duration (starving), both of which manifest in marked changes that probably lead to underestimation of the real rates.  相似文献

Laboratory-cultured Streptocephalus torvicornis were offered 8 concentrations (from 6 to 800 ind. ml–1) of Anuraeopsis fissa for periods of 2 h 30 min. Two size classes, small (male: 14.7 mm± 1.6, female: 15.4 mm± 1.3) and large (male: 20.0 mm±2.0, female: 23.1 mm± 1.5), of S. torvicornis were used. Functional response for large S. torvicornis (both sexes) plateaued at 400 rotifers ml–1, while in small specimens it did so at 200 prey ml–1. Females consumed significantly more (30%) prey than males. Large males consumed maximum 4730 rotifers h–1, females 6560 h–1.  相似文献

In the littoral zones of lakes, aquatic macrophytes produce considerable structural variation that can provide protection to prey communities by hindering predator foraging activity. The swimming and feeding behaviour of a planktivore, Pseudorasbora parva(Cyprinidae) on its prey (Daphnia pulex) was studied in a series of laboratory experiments with varying densities (0, 350, 700, 1400, 2100 and 2800 stems m–2) of simulated submerged vegetation. Prey availability was varied from 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 10.0 and 25.0 prey l–1. As the stem density increased, the predator's swimming speed and the number of prey captured decreased relative to feeding in open water. A good relation existed between the number of successful prey captures and swimming speed with the average stem distance to fish body length ratio (D). An abrupt reduction in feeding and swimming was recorded when D was reduced to values less than one.  相似文献

Predatory pelagic water mites, Piona sp., in a small subtropical lake of Argentina showed rapid numerical response and protection from fish consumption. In experiments, predation rates of Piona on cladocerans equalled those of the principle lake planktivore, Moenkhausia intermedia Eigenmann (about 100 prey · predator–1 day–1). As a result, the mites caused a summer depression in the dominant lake zooplankter, Daphnia laevis Birge, evidenced by the analysis of its population dynamics and simple modelling.  相似文献

The suspension feeding of Bithynia tentaculata was tested in laboratory experiments. The animals were fed in 1-1 aerated glass beakers, and filtration rates were calculated from changes in cell concentrations during the 6-h experiment. Temperature influenced the filtering rate, with minimum values of 5ml · ind–1 · h–1 at 5° C and maxima of 17.2 ml · ind–1 · h–1 at 18° C. Three food species of different size, motility and cell surface characteristics (Chlamydomonas reinhardii, Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorogonium elongatum) did not affect filtration rates. Suspension feeding increased with increasing food concentrations up to 12 nl · ml–1, above which feeding rate was kept constant by lowering the filtering rates. Even the smallest animals tested (<4 mm body length) were found to be feeding on suspended food at a rate of 2.7 ml · ind–1 · h–1, and increasing rates up to 8.4 ml were found in the 6–7 mm size class. All size classes of Bithynia showed a circannual fluctuation of their filtration rates. The ecological consequences of Bithynia's ability to switch between two feeding modes, grazing and suspension feeding, are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Field metabolic rates (FMRs; CO2 production) and water influx rates of Varanus rosenbergi were measured seasonally by means of doubly-labelled water (3H2 18O). Metabolic rates and water influexes were highest in summer (0.18 ml CO2 g–1 h–1 and 17.9 ml H2O kg–1 day–1) and lowest in winter (0.04 ml CO2 g–1 h–1 and 6.5 ml H2O kg–1 day–1). FMRs and water fluxes were intermediate in spring. It is estimated that a 1-kg V. rosenbergi would need to consume 4.7 kg of prey each year to remain in energy balance and that the energy commitment to egg production requires a 40% increase in the food acquisition of a gravid female in late spring and early summer. It is calculated that water influxes in summer are totally provided from food but in other seasons, particularly winter, pulmocutaneous water exchange and/or drinking are significant avenues of water intake.  相似文献

Clearance rates of Limnoperna fortunei (Bivalvia) were investigated in laboratory experiments using monocultures of the alga Chlorella vulgaris. Experimental conditions included two mollusc sizes (15 and 23 mm), and three water temperatures (15, 20 and 25 °C) covering the normal seasonal range in the lower Paraná river and Río de la Plata estuary. Filtration rates obtained were, for the larger mussels: 9.9, 13.1 and 17.7 ml mg tissue dry weight–1 h–1 at 15, 20 and 25 °C, respectively; and for the smaller ones: 17.7, 20.8 and 29.5 ml mg–1 h–1. Differences between sizes and between temperatures (except 15 vs. 20 °C) were statistically significant. In absolute terms larger animals have higher clearance rates, but as a function of body mass smaller individuals feed more actively. Within the range of experimental values used, filtration rates were positively associated with water temperature. These clearance rates (125–350 ml individual–1 h–1) are among the highest reported for suspension feeding bivalves, including the invasive species Dreissena polymorpha, D. bugensis and Corbicula fluminea. High filtration rates, associated with the very high densities of this mollusc in the Paraná watershed (up to over 200,000 ind m–2) suggest that its environmental impact may be swiftly changing ecological conditions in the areas colonized.  相似文献

The kinetics of continuous l-sorbose fermentation using Acetobacter suboxydans with and without cell recycle (100%) were investigated at dilution rates (D) of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.3 h–1. The biomass and sorbose concentrations for continuous fermentation without recycle increased as the dilution rate was increased from 0.05 to 0.10 h–1. A maximum biomass concentration of 8.44 g l–1 and sorbose concentration of 176.90 g l–1 were obtained at D=0.10 h–1. The specific rate of sorbose production and volumetric sorbose productivity at this dilution rate were 2.09 g g–1 h–1 and 17.69 g l–1 h–1. However, on further increasing the dilution rate to 0.3 h–1, both biomass and sorbose concentrations decreased to 2.93 and 73.20 g l–1 respectively, mainly due to washout of the reactor contents. However, the specific rate of sorbose formation and volumetric sorbose productivity at this dilution rate increased to 7.49 g g–1 h–1 and 21.96 g l–1 h–1 respectively. Continuous fermentation with 100% cell recycle served to further enhance the concentration of biomass and sorbose to 28.27 and 184.32 g l–1 respectively (in the reactor at a dilution rate of 0.05 h–1). Even though, there was a decline in the biomass and sorbose concentrations to 6.8 and 83.40 g l–1 at a dilution rate of 0.3 h–1, the specific rates of sorbose formation and volumetric sorbose productivity increased to 3.67 g g–1h–1 and 25.02 g l–1 h–1.  相似文献

Predation of three calanoid copepods (Calanus helgolandicus, Temora longicornis and Centropages chierchiae) on phytoplankton, dinoflagellates and ciliates was estimated in the Gironde estuarine plume (Bay of Biscay) during winter by means of in situ incubations. Both phytoplankton and ciliates were part of the diet of those three species, while only Centropages chierchiae also included a significant portion of dinoflagellates in its diet. The clearance rates of Calanus helgolandicus for ciliates and phytoplankton reached 2.8 and 4.0 ml copepod–1 h–1, respectively, those of Temora longicornis were 3.2 and 1.8 ml copepod–1 h–1, and those of Centropages chierchiae were 4.3 and 0.8 ml copepod–1 h–1.Neither Calanus helgolandicus nor Temora longicornis selected dinoflagellates, given the low clearance rates measured for this prey category (0.05 and 0.03 ml copepod–1 h–1, respectively). By contrast, Centropages chierchiae included dinoflagellates in its diet, with a clearance rate of 4.9 ml copepod–1 h–1. Within a given prey category (ciliates or dinoflagellates), all three copepods selected larger prey types (>40 m) over smaller ones (40 m). This implies a better detection and capture of larger motile prey compared to small ones. The results are discussed with regard to the omnivorous feeding behavior of these copepods observed here, during a late winter phytoplankton bloom.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were designed to estimate the ingestion rates of the scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata under varying prey concentrations and feeding regimes and to assess the effect of feeding on the tissue and skeletal growth. Six sets of corals were incubated under two light (80 and 300 µmol photons m–2 s–1) and three feeding levels (none, fed twice, and fed six times per week) using freshly collected zooplankton. Results showed that the number of prey ingested was proportional to prey density, and no saturation of feeding capability was reached. Capture rates varied between 0.5 and 8 prey items 200 polyp–1 h–1. Corals starved for several days ingested more plankton than did fed corals. Fed colonies exhibited significantly higher levels of protein, chlorophyll a, and chlorophyll c2 per unit surface area than starved colonies. Feeding had a strong effect on tissue growth, increasing it by two to eight times. Calcification rates were also 30% higher in fed than in starved corals. Even moderate levels of feeding enhanced both tissue and skeletal growth, although the processes involved in this enhancement remain to be determined.  相似文献

Feeding rates of Daphnia pulex fed a range of levels of the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardi of 15 °C are strongly density-dependent. At lower densities, Daphnia (30 1–1) fed at higher rates than crowded (270 1–1) Daphnia which manifest a relatively depressed saturation feeding response. At 30 individuals/liter, Daphnia consumed 8.5 – 15.7 × 104 cells d–1h–1 (on a volume basis, 12.1 – 22.2 × 106 m3), at 270 L–1 3.7 – 3.9 × 104 (5.2 – 5.5 = 106 m3 cells d–1h–1 when feeding on algae at 80 000 cells ml–1 (11.3 × 106 m3 ml–1). The feeding rate data best fit an Ivlev feeding function. An autoallelopath might be causing the repression. Water preconditioned with crowded Daphnia completely repressed feeding in uncrowded Daphnia after six hours.  相似文献

Two set of isolates were obtained in an isolation/selection programme to select eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and/or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) rich strains ofIsochrysis galbana. EPA content was improved up to an average of 5.3% (d.wt) for the second set of isolates. On the other hand, with the aeration rate, pH and irradiance kept at low levels, the growth rate was slow and EPA synthesis was enhanced, but productivity increased when growth rates were maximum. A model relating steady-state dilution rates in chemostat cultures ofI. galbana to internal average irradiance is proposed. The greatest productivities were obtained between 0.0295 h–1 and 0.0355 h–1 with 300 mg m–3 h–1 for EPA and 130 mg m–3 h–1 for DHA.  相似文献

The desulfurization activity of the resting cells of Gordona sp. CYKS1 was strongly depended on harvest time and the highest value when the cells had been harvested in the early growth phase (0.12 mg sulfur g–1 cell–1 h–1). For the model oil, hexadecane containing dibenzothiophene, the specific desulfurization rate decreased as the reaction proceeded. Both the specific and the volumetric desulfurization rates were not significantly affected by the aqueous-to-oil phase ratio. The diesel oils, light gas oil and a middle distillate unit feed were desulfurized at higher rates (ca. 0.34 mg sulfur g–1 cell–1 h–1) than the model oil (0.12 mg sulfur g–1 cell–1 h–1).  相似文献

Aquatic macrophytes produce considerable structural variation within the littoral zone and as a result the vegetation provides refuge to prey communities by hindering predator foraging activities. The behavior of planktivorous fish Pseudorasbora parva (Cyprinidae) and their zooplankton prey Daphnia pulex were quantified in a series of laboratory experiments with artificial vegetation at densities of 0, 350, 700, 1400, 2100 and 2800 stemsm–2. Swimming speeds and foraging rates of the fish were recorded at different prey densities for all stem densities. The foraging efficiency of P. parva decreased significantly with increasing habitat complexity. This decline in feeding efficiency was related to two factors: submerged vegetation impeded swimming behavior and obstructed sight while foraging. This study separated the effects of swimming speed variation and of visual impairment, both due to stems, that led to reduced prey–predator encounters and examined how the reduction of the visual field volume may be predicted using a random encounter model.  相似文献
