With the exception of some data for common poorwills (Phalaenoptilus nuttallii) and anecdotal reports for a few other species, knowledge about the use of torpor by free-ranging birds is limited. Our study was designed to assess the use of torpor by free-ranging Australian owlet-nightjars (Aegotheles cristatus). We selected this species for study because of their relatively small body size (50 g), arthropod diet, nocturnal sedentary nature, taxonomic affiliation with other birds for whom the use of torpor is well documented, use of cavity roosts, and because of the cold winter (mean July minimum ambient temperature [T(a)] of approximately 0 degrees C) in the study area. We tracked 12 owlet-nightjars carrying temperature-sensitive transmitters for a total of 906 bird-days (range of 15-115 d per individual). Five different individuals entered torpor on 96 d in total. Torpor bouts occurred only between May 8 and September 8, the coldest period of the year. The lowest skin temperature (T(skin)) recorded for any bird was 19.6 degrees C, and the lowest core temperature was 22.4 degrees C. Surprisingly, torpor was rarely used at night because birds usually foraged then. Instead, torpor typically began near dawn, even on cold nights. Torpor bouts beginning at dawn lasted approximately 4 h. On 36% of days when torpor was used at dawn, birds reentered torpor later in the day. Torpor was not used during the breeding season, but this period also corresponds to the warm part of the year. There were no distinct daily minimum, maximum, or mean T(a) thresholds that could be used to reliably distinguish days when dawn torpor was used from those when it was not, although torpor was commonly employed when daily minimum T(a) fell below 3.9 degrees C. Our results show that even though Australia is typically thought of as a warm continent, at least some of the avifauna use torpor as a regular means of saving energy. We hypothesise that the reasons for this species' use of torpor include its ability to remain active all night foraging, either for terrestrial arthropods while walking or for flying insects taken on the wing, and/or its habit of roosting in cavities, which allows them to remain hidden in the daytime.  相似文献

The immune system is an energetically expensive self-maintenance complex that, given the risks of parasitism, cannot be carelessly compromised. Life-history theory posits that trade-offs between fitness components, such as self-maintenance and reproduction, vary between genders and age classes depending on their expected residual lifetime reproductive success, and seasonally as energetic requirements change. Using ruff (Philomachus pugnax), a bird with two genetically distinct male morphs, we demonstrate here a decrease in male immunocompetence during the breeding season, greater variance in immune response among males than females, immunosenescence in both sexes and male morphs, and a seasonal shift in the age range required to detect senescence. Using a phytohaemagglutinin delayed hypersensitivity assay, we assessed cell-mediated immunity (CMI) of males of typical breeding age during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons, and of a larger sample that included females and birds of a greater age range during the non-breeding period. CMI was higher for breeding-aged males in May than in November, but the increase was not related to age or male morph. In November, mean CMI did not differ between the sexes, but the variance was higher for males than for females, and there were no differences in mean or variance between the two male morphs. For both sexes and male morphs, CMI was lower for young birds than for birds of typical breeding ages, and it declined again for older birds. In males, senescence was detected in the non-breeding season only when very old birds were included. These results, generally consistent with expectations from life-history theory, indicate that the immune system can be involved in multifarious trade-offs within a yearly cycle and along an individual's lifetime, and that specific predictions about means and variances in immune response should be considered in future immunoecological research.  相似文献

Separating gregarious individuals from their group members often results in behavioural and physiological changes, like increased levels of corticosterone. Testosterone and corticosterone, in particular, have been implicated in the response of mammals to novelty. Data in birds are, however, rare. The presence or absence of group members may also influence an individual's response to novel stimuli. We assessed the behaviour and hormonal response of European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to a novel object in two different situations and seasons: each starling was tested when separated and when in contact with its group members in May/June (breeding season) and again in September/October (non-breeding season). Starlings are gregarious throughout the year, but as foraging flocks are small during the breeding season and large during the non-breeding season, we assumed that non-breeding starlings would be more affected by social isolation. Overall, starlings had higher levels of corticosterone, lost more body mass, and were more active when they were separated from their group. Isolated individuals, however, did not show a greater neophobic response than individuals in the presence of their group members in either season. Circulating levels of testosterone and corticosterone were higher after a test with novel object than after a test with only the familiar feeding dish in both sexes and seasons. However, control tests for handling effects confirmed only the increase in testosterone. Our study shows that social isolation is stressful for unrelated and unpaired members of a wild flocking bird species and demonstrates that novelty can lead to a rise in testosterone in birds.  相似文献

Forest fragmentation represents a threat to several bird species worldwide. Several factors can change across seasons (e.g. bird perception of the landscape, weather conditions, biotic interactions), which can modify the response of bird populations to forest fragmentation. However, most studies have been conducted only during the breeding season. Here we assessed the relationship between forest fragmentation (patch area and patch isolation) with population abundances of resident species during both the breeding and the non-breeding seasons. Bird population abundances (all species in the community, subsets of forest and habitat generalist species and for individual species) were estimated across a gradient of area-isolation in a semi-arid forest in Cordoba, Argentina. Population abundance of the overall avian community and of the subset of forest species declined with patch area reduction independently of the season. By contrast, the subset of habitat generalist species was not affected by patch area reduction or by the increase in patch isolation, either during the breeding or during the non-breeding season. When the analyses were carried out for individual species, we found four forest species and one habitat generalist species whose responses (the relationship between population abundance and patch area or with isolation) were different between breeding and non-breeding seasons. The negative effects of forest fragmentation were found mainly during the breeding season. Our results suggest that reduction of patch area may lead to a reduction of more than 65% of the population abundance of forest bird species, during both the breeding and the non-breeding season. Therefore, there is an urgent need to conserve large forest patches within the region as irreplaceable elements for the conservation of populations of several species.  相似文献

In many birds and mammals, male territorial aggression is modulated by elevated circulating concentrations of the steroid hormone testosterone (T) during the breeding season. However, many species are territorial also during the non-breeding season, when plasma T levels are basal. The endocrine control of non-breeding territorial aggression differs considerably between species, and previous studies on wintering birds suggest differences between migratory and resident species. We investigated the endocrine modulation of territorial aggression during the breeding and non-breeding season in a resident population of European stonechats (Saxicola torquata rubicola). We recorded the aggressive response to a simulated territorial intrusion in spring and winter. Then, we compared the territorial aggression between seasons and in an experiment in which we blocked the androgenic and estrogenic action of T. We found no difference in the aggressive response between the breeding and the non-breeding season. However, similarly to what is found in migratory stonechats, the hormonal treatment decreased aggressive behaviors in resident males in the breeding season, whereas no effects were recorded in the non-breeding season. When we compared the aggressive responses of untreated birds with those obtained from migratory populations in a previous study, we found that territorial aggression of resident males was lower than that of migratory males during the breeding season. Our results show that in a resident population of stonechats T and/or its metabolites control territorial aggression in the breeding but not in the non-breeding season. In addition, our study supports the hypothesis that migratory status does modulate the intensity of aggressive behavior.  相似文献

Northern-temperate male birds show seasonal changes in testosterone concentrations with a peak during the breeding season. Many tropical birds express much lower concentrations of testosterone with slight elevations during breeding. Here we describe testosterone and corticosterone concentrations of male stonechats from equatorial Kenya during different substages of breeding and molt. This tropical species has a short breeding season of approximately 3 months. We compare their hormone concentrations to previously published data of males of a northern-temperate relative, the European stonechat, also a seasonal breeder but with a breeding season of approximately 5 months. Equatorial stonechats show a pronounced peak of testosterone during the nest-building and laying stage. During all other stages, testosterone concentrations are low, similar to other year-round territorial tropical bird species. Corticosterone concentrations peak also during the nest-building and laying stage suggesting that this period of maximum female fecundity is a demanding period for the male. Equatorial stonechats have significantly lower concentrations of testosterone than European stonechats during all stages, except during the nest-building and laying stage. During this stage of maximum female fertility, testosterone levels tend to be higher in equatorial than in European stonechats. Our results suggest that equatorial stonechats belong to a group of tropical bird species that are characterized by a short breeding season and a brief high peak of testosterone during the female's fertile period. Such brief, but substantial peaks of testosterone may be common in tropical birds, but they may easily be missed if the exact breeding stage of individual birds is not known.  相似文献

The richness and diversity of avian species inhabiting Turaif province of Saudi Arabia were surveyed for a period of one-year (2014–2015) using walked belt transects in different habitats of the studied area. Bird species were observed and recorded by sightings or vocal calls. A total of thirty-three bird species belonging to fifteen families were observed across all the surveys in the Turaif area. During a breeding season, species abundance was higher as compared to non-breeding season. Out of 33, eighteen species were passage migrants and fifteen species were noted as breeding residents. Family Muscicapidae which showed the highest proportion (24.24%) was represented by 8 bird species followed by family Alaudidae and family Falconidae represented by 4 species each. According to this survey relatively a fair quantity of bird species still exists in the Turaif region. This area is of significant interest in terms of conservation of birds due to higher densities of endemic, breeding or resident avian species.  相似文献

Several small caprimulgiform birds (<80 g) are known to enter torpor, apparently to cope with a fluctuating supply of insect prey. Since the large Australian tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides; 381-556 g) is also insectivorous, we investigated its thermoregulatory behaviour and thermal biology to determine whether this species is also heterothermic. In an open woodland at approximately 1,000 m altitude, we equipped eight free-ranging birds with external temperature-sensitive radio transmitters attached to an elastic harness to measure skin temperature (T(skin)). Core body temperature (T(b)) was measured in three of these birds fitted with an additional intraperitoneal transmitter. T(skin) was closely correlated with T(b), although T(skin) was usually several degrees below T(b). During the three coldest months of the year (June-August), shallow torpor with T(b) as low as 29.1 degrees C occurred frequently, whereas during spring and summer, torpor was not recorded. Torpor occurred either during the night and/or during the first half of the day. Night torpor bouts were initiated after a short activity period around dusk and lasted on average for about 7 h. Torpid birds always aroused before sunrise to either commence a second short foraging period or to fly directly to a day roost tree. After birds roosted, T(b) fell again around sunrise, and birds occasionally entered a second dawn torpor bout; however, in most cases, T(b) increased rapidly not long after entry, most likely due to passive heating by the sun. We conclude that despite their large body size and energetically conservative hunting strategy, tawny frogmouths, like several related caprimulgiform species, frequently enter shallow torpor when low T(a) demands high energetic costs for normothermic thermoregulation and likely reduces insect availability.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to show whether it is possible to induce ovulation in the hare by GnRH analogue administration and to carry out an effective artificial insemination (AI). The research was carried out during the breeding and non-breeding season. During the breeding season, plasma progesterone concentrations increased on the 4th day after intramuscular injection of GnRH analogue (buserelin), indicating induced ovulation and corpus luteum development. Prostaglandin F(2)alpha (dinoprost) was an effective luteolytic agent on day 9. During the non-breeding season, the GnRH analogue injection does not cause an increase of progesterone. The 17beta-estradiol concentrations during the breeding and non-breeding season were similar. It was shown that after GnRH analogue administration and artificial insemination with semen diluted in Tris buffer extender 80% females delivered live young (39-43 days after artificial insemination), which proves the effectiveness of inducing ovulation in the hare by means of hormonal stimulation.  相似文献

This paper describes the strategies of resource utilization in the course of the breeding season by five radio-tagged Grey Herons Ardea cinerea. The seasonal changes in exploitation of the environment by two breeding adults, one non-breeding adult and two non-breeding first-year birds were studied from March to August 1982, near Zonhoven in Belgium. Two adult breeding birds could be followed continuously from the end of March until the middle of June. During the first month they explored an extended area all around the colony, but each concentrated its search in a specific direction. From the end of April until the beginning of June, most probably from egg-hatching until the end of breeding activities, each bird spent a very large proportion of its time at a particular feeding site, from which other herons were actively excluded. In the first part of June they again visited different sites, each maintaining its preferred direction. From the middle of June onwards they seemed to have left the fish-pond area. The pattern of movements of the first-year birds differed markedly from that of the breeding adults. In April, although both non-breeding and breeding birds explored large areas, only the areas used by non-breeders were centred on the colony. From the end of April onwards, probably after general egg-hatching in the colony, the non-breeders very rarely revisited the colony, and from May till August their ranges became more and more restricted to very small areas at an increasing distance from the colony. They were never observed defending particular sites. The results are discussed with regard to recent speculations about the evolution of colonies as an adaptation for the exploitation of food resources. Breeding herons seem to explore a large part of the environment during incubation and defend a particular site while feeding their young. Choice of feeding site by non-breeding birds may be influenced by the site defence of the breeding birds. Non-breeding birds exploit a large area when breeding birds occupy feeding territories. Perhaps they are forced to forage in less suitable places at this time. Colonies might have evolved as a strategy to minimize effort in resource esploitation as, especially at the beginning of the breeding season, the colony could act as an assembly point in the exploration of the environment. However, its importance as an assembly point diminishes in the course of the season, as non-breeding birds no longer visit the colony and adults defend territories.

The hormonal control of territorial aggression in male and female vertebrates outside the breeding season is still unresolved. Most vertebrates have regressed gonads when not breeding and do not secrete high levels of sex steroids. However, recent studies implicate estrogens in the regulation of non-breeding territoriality in some bird species. One possible source of steroids during the non-breeding season could be the adrenal glands that are known to produce sex steroid precursors such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). We studied tropical, year-round territorial spotted antbirds (Hylophylax n. naevioides) and asked (1). whether both males and females are aggressive in the non-breeding season and (2). whether DHEA is detectable in the plasma at that time. We conducted simulated territorial intrusions (STIs) with live decoys to male and female free-living spotted antbirds in central Panama. Non-breeding males and females displayed robust aggressive responses to STIs, and responded more intensely to decoys of their own sex. In both sexes, plasma DHEA concentrations were detectable and higher than levels of testosterone (T) and 17beta-estradiol (E(2)). In males, plasma DHEA concentrations were positively correlated with STI duration. Next, we conducted STIs in captive non-breeding birds. Captive males and females displayed robust aggressive behavior. Plasma DHEA concentrations were detectable in both sexes, whereas T was non-detectable (E(2) was not measured). Plasma DHEA concentrations of males were positively correlated with aggressive vocalizations and appeared to increase with longer STI durations. We conclude that male and female spotted antbirds can produce DHEA during the non-breeding season and DHEA may serve as a precursor of sex steroids for the regulation of year-round territorial behavior in both sexes.  相似文献

Information regarding passerine heterothermy and torpor is scant, although many species are small and must cope with a fluctuating food supply and presumably would benefit from energy savings afforded by torpor. We studied whether insectivorous Dusky Woodswallows (Artamus cyanopterus; ∼35 g) enter spontaneous torpor (food ad libitum) when held outdoors as a pair in autumn/winter. Woodswallows displayed pronounced and regular daily fluctuations in body temperature (T b) over the entire study period. The mean T b ranged from ∼39°C to 40°C (photophase, day time) and ∼33°C to 36°C (scotophase, night time). However, on 88% of bird nights, nocturnal T b minima fell to < 35°C. The lowest T b observed in air was 29.2°C. However, when a bird fell into water its T b dropped further to ∼22°C; this T b was regulated for several hours and the bird survived. Our observations suggest that heterothermy is a normal part of the daily thermal regime for woodswallows to minimise energy expenditure. Spontaneous nocturnal torpor in captive woodswallows suggests that torpor in the wild may be more pronounced than recorded here because free-living birds are likely challenged by both low food availability and adverse weather.  相似文献

Anthropogenic activities generate different forms of environmental pollution, including artificial light at night (ALAN) and airborne toxic chemicals (ATCs). Nocturnally migrating birds are attracted to ALAN during migration and if ALAN occurs in unison with ATC, the chances of ground-level ATC contamination occurring at stopover sites could increase. Here, we document the relationship between ALAN and ATC within the contiguous United States based on 479 toxic chemicals from 15,743 releasing facilities. Using weekly diurnal estimates of relative abundance for 165 nocturnally migrating passerine (NMP) bird species, we assess how the species richness and relative abundance of NMP species are correlated with ALAN and ATC across the annual cycle. The concentration of ATC increased with increasing ALAN levels, except at the highest ALAN levels. The species richness of NMP species was positively correlated with ATC during the non-breeding season and migration, and negatively correlated during the breeding season. The relative abundance of NMP species was negatively correlated with ATC during the breeding and non-breeding seasons and the correlation did not differ from zero during migration. Through the disorienting influence of ALAN, our findings suggest large numbers of NMP species are being exposed to higher ATC concentrations at stopover sites. Outside of migration, large numbers of NMP species that winter along the US Gulf Coast are being exposed for an extended period of time to higher ATC concentrations. Initiatives designed to decrease ALAN during migration have the potential to reduce the acute and chronic effects of ATC contamination, lower the maternal transfer of toxic chemicals to eggs, and decrease the biologically mediated transport of toxic chemicals across regions. However, these initiatives will not benefit species that experience prolonged ATC exposure during the non-breeding season along the US Gulf Coast, a region that could be a significant source of ATC contamination for North American birds.  相似文献

1.?While the reasons for group-living have been studied for decades, little is known about why individuals become solitary. 2.?Several previous experimental studies could demonstrate that group-living can arises as a consequence of ecological constraints. 3.?It has been argued that reproductive competition between group members leads to significant costs of group-living, being a main reason of solitary-living. However, so far, no studies tested experimentally whether reproductive competition can explain solitary-living. 4.?Using a socially flexible species, the African striped mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio), we tested experimentally in the field whether dispersal and solitary-living are more likely to occur when reproductive competition is present. 5.?We investigated ecological constraints, here expressed as a function of population density, by removing groups of striped mice and creating vacant territories. To control for the effect of reproductive competition, which occurs only during the breeding season, we performed experiments during both the breeding and the non-breeding season. This is the first removal experiment performed in a species with communal breeding during the non-breeding season. 6.?During the breeding season, when population density was low, more striped mice from experimental groups moved into the vacant territories and became solitary than striped mice from control groups. This is in support of the ecological constraints hypothesis. 7.?During the non-breeding season, striped mice remained group-living despite the availability of free territories. Significantly, more striped mice became solitary-living during the breeding than during the non-breeding season. This is the first experimental support for the reproductive competition hypothesis explaining solitary-living. 8.?Analysis of the sexual maturity of males showed that males which became solitary had a higher reproductive potential than males that remained group-living. Analysis of the body mass data of females showed that more solitary females reproduced than group-living females. These results indicate that by becoming solitary individuals of both sexes avoided costs of reproductive competition within groups. 9.?Our study provides experimental evidence that reproductive competition within groups can lead to dispersal and solitary-living.  相似文献

An attempt was made to determine cyclicity in yaks using plasma progesterone during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Fifteen non-lactating yaks were used in this experiment. During the breeding season (July to November), blood samples were collected from 8 yaks at least twice weekly until estrus was observed and then at 2 days interval for 30 days. During the non-breeding season (February to March), blood samples were collected from the same number of yaks at 2-day interval for 30 days. Progesterone was determined in plasma samples by radioimmunoassay. During the breeding season, plasma progesterone at estrus was basal (< or = 0.2 ng/ml). Concentrations increased thereafter with a sharp increase during the late luteal phase, typically reaching peak levels around day 15. Concentrations then declined rapidly over the following 4 days, reaching basal levels at estrus. A high proportion (66.7%) of potential estrous periods (based on progesterone concentrations) went undetected, indicating that silent or weak estrus was a prominent problem in yak cows. During the non-breeding season, three animals were found to be cycling as determined by the patterns of plasma progesterone. Yet, behavioral symptoms of estrus were not observed in any of these yak cows. We conclude that peripheral plasma progesterone concentrations can be used to monitor cyclicity in yak cows effectively.  相似文献

We studied the effect of sex and group size on the proportion of time a greater rhea, Rhea americana, allocates to vigilance and feeding during the breeding and the non-breeding seasons. We analysed 175 records of focal animals that were feeding alone or in groups of 2 to 26 birds. In both seasons, males spent more time in vigilance and less time in feeding than females. Both sexes spent more time in vigilance and less time in feeding during the breeding season. Sexual and seasonal differences in vigilance were the result of different mechanisms. Males had shorter feeding bouts than females but there were no sexual differences in the length of the vigilance bouts. On the contrary, seasonal differences were the result of males and females having longer vigilance bouts during the breeding season but there were no seasonal differences in the length of the feeding bouts. During the non-breeding season, individual vigilance was higher in rheas foraging alone than in groups. In this case, solitary birds had longer vigilance and shorter feeding bouts than birds foraging in groups. We discuss the possible effect of intragroup competition and food availability on the allocation of time between feeding and vigilance in this species.  相似文献

The propensity of migratory waders to remain on the non-breeding grounds during the arctic breeding season ("oversummer") in their first biological year of life ("juveniles") may be latitude, and thus migratory distance dependent. We compared the extent of preparation for northward migration of western sandpipers Calidris mauri spending the non-breeding season in México and Panamá during 1995–1998. During winter residency and premigratory periods, we measured body mass and scored the extent of dull basic versus bright alternate breeding plumage of captured juveniles and adults (second biological year or older), and obtained additional plumage scores from observations of uniquely colour banded birds. Nearly all western sandpipers in México prepared for northward migration by increasing body mass and moulting into breeding plumage. In Panamá, most adults prepared for migration, but few, if any, juveniles did so. Patterns of body mass and breeding plumage development do not generally support the hypothesis that oversummering by juveniles results directly from less efficient foraging or from resource competition with adults. We suggest instead that costs directly associated with migratory distance per se influence the life history strategies of sandpipers spending the non-breeding seasons at different latitudes. This latitudinal difference should interact with the well documented sex-ratio cline in non-breeding distribution (male western sandpipers predominating in northern parts of the range and females in southern parts). This suggests that females have more conservative life histories, prioritizing first year survivorship, relative to males that instead weight first-year breeding opportunities.  相似文献

Events during the non-breeding season may affect the body condition of migratory birds and influence performance during the following breeding season. Migratory birds nesting in the Arctic often rely on endogenous nutrients for reproductive efforts, and are thus potentially subject to such carry-over effects. We tested whether king eider (Somateria spectabilis) arrival time and body mass upon arrival at breeding grounds in northern Alaska were affected by their choice of a winter region in the Bering Sea. We captured birds shortly after arrival on breeding grounds in early June 2002–2006 at two sites in northern Alaska and determined the region in which individuals wintered using satellite telemetry or stable isotope ratios of head feathers. We used generalized linear models to assess whether winter region explained variation in arrival body mass among individuals by accounting for sex, site, annual variation, and the date a bird was captured. We found no support for our hypothesis that either arrival time or arrival body mass of king eiders differed among winter regions. We conclude that wintering in different regions in the Bering Sea is unlikely to have reproductive consequences for king eiders in our study areas.  相似文献
