The circumstances that led to the discovery that plants luminesce after they are illuminated are described, as are other discoveries that would not have been possible were it not for the fortuitous association I had with my dear and most admirable friend, W.A. Arnold, to whom this special issue is dedicated.  相似文献

Books received
In this article I discuss the major arguments in three of my books that are the focus of attention in this special issue. The Declining Significance of Race (1978, 2nd edn 1980), The Truly Disadvantaged (1987), and When Work Disappears (1996). This discussion serves as the backdrop for my rejoinder to the points made in the preceding articles, including those on the relative significance of race and class, social isolation, the concept ‘ghetto’, complexity of inner-city family life, and affirmative action. I conclude this article with some reflections on the plight of poor blacks and social policy in the United States.  相似文献

At the beginning of the 21st century, developmental biologists together with medical researchers in a wide range of fields are witnessing rapid progress in molecular developmental biology. For example, conditional gene knockout systems are being designed to tackle questions about organogenesis and body plan formation in experimental mouse models and experimental designs include several compound mutant analyses and genome modification strategies. On the other hand, several fields remain relatively unexplored. Molecular mechanisms of sex differentiation are one of the unexplored huge area. Unanswered questions include the molecular genetic cascade of gonad formation, reproductive organ formation, uterus, external genitalia and mammary gland formation, and also the molecular mechanisms of signal transduction, and gene regulation by nuclear hormone receptors. This special thematic review series entitled, "Reproductive/urogenital organ development and molecular genetic cascades: glamorous developmental processes of bodies," covers such a wide range of topics. For this special issue, I have asked active researchers to contribute reviews of these topics which I believe will be useful not only for molecular developmental biologists, but also for researchers in biochemistry and cell biology. It will be my great pleasure if this special thematic issue encourages scientists to study this exciting research field.  相似文献

The purpose of my chapter in this issue of Neuroscience Reviews dedicated to Dr. Lawrence Eng is to summarize my contributions to understanding the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in prion diseases. I explain that I was able to advance the field of prion disease neuropathology largely because of the foundation of neurochemistry and immunohistochemistry that I learned while working 5 years in Dr. Engs laboratory. In my review, I relate how my Neuropathology Research Laboratory began as a collaboration with Dr. Stanley Prusiner 20 years ago that led from immunohistochemical staining of amyloid plaques in rodent and human brains using prion protein-specific antibodies to molecular evidence that the abnormal prion protein, PrPSc, is the cause of the clinically relevant neuropathological changes in animal and human prion diseases.Special issue dedicated to Dr. Lawrence F. We develop and study two neural network models of perceptual alternations. Both models have a star-like architecture of connections with a central element connected to a set of peripheral elements. A particular perception is simulated in terms of partial synchronization between the central element and some sub-group of peripheral elements. The first model is constructed from phase oscillators and the mechanism of perceptual alternations is based on chaotic intermittency under fixed parameter values. Similar to experimental evidence, the distribution of times between perceptual alternations is represented by the gamma distribution. The second model is built of spiking neurons of the Hodgkin–Huxley type. The mechanism of perceptual alternations is based on plasticity of inhibitory synapses which increases the inhibition from the central unit to the neural assembly representing the current percept. As a result another perception is formed. Simulations show that the second model is in good agreement with behavioural data on switching times between percepts of ambiguous figures and with experimental results on binocular rivalry of two and four percepts. This article is part of a special issue on Neuronal Dynamics of Sensory Coding. This special issue is in honour of Professor Pepe Segundo who is one of the pioneers in the study of neural coding. Pepe has been an active participant in many Neural Coding Workshops sharing his great knowledge and experience of research in this field. I (R. Borisyuk) was very happy to meet Pepe for the first time in Prague when attending the first Neural Coding Workshop in 1995. From that time we regularly met at Neural Coding Workshops and these meetings have always been very stimulating and fruitful for my research. Remarkably, the first paper I studied at the beginning of my scientific career was a seminal paper by Moore et al. (1970). For me, this paper provided a great opportunity to learn the basic statistical techniques for the analysis of multiple spike trains and neural coding. According to the Institute of Scientific Information, this paper has been cited 380 times! This exciting paper has inspired my research into the synaptic and functional connectivity of neural circuits derived from spike-train recordings (Borisyuk et al. 1985; Stuart et al. 2005) and guided my search for new ideas on neural coding.  相似文献

The young investigator award from the Protein Society was a special honor for me because, at its essence, the goal of my laboratory is to define what obscure proteins do. Years ago, I stumbled into mitochondria as a venue for this work, and these organelles continue to define the biological theme of my laboratory. Our approaches are fairly broad, reflecting my own somewhat unorthodox training among diverse scientific fields spanning organic synthesis, chemical biology, mechanistic biochemistry, signal transduction, and systems biology. Yet, whatever the theme or the discipline, we aim to understand how proteins work—especially those that hide in the dark corners of mitochondria. Below, I recount my own path into this arena of protein science, and describe how my experiences along the way have shaped our current multi‐disciplinary efforts to define the inner workings of this complex biological system.  相似文献

This article is a reply to Venkatapuram's critique in his article Health, Vital Goals, Capabilities, this volume. I take issue mainly with three critical points put forward by Venkatapuram with regard to my theory of health. (1) I deny that the contents of my vital goals are relative to each community or context, as Venkatapuram claims. There is no conceptual connection at all between standard circumstances and vital goals, as I understand these concepts. (2) Venkatapuram notes that I stop short of filling the framework of vital goals with any content and thereby make my concept of health less concrete. I reply that some vital goals are indeed universal, viz. the ones which are necessary conditions for survival. Many other vital goals are individual and cannot therefore be included in a universal list. (3) Venkatapuram claims that my definition of vital goals is too broad, since it entails that some persons without any disease can be regarded as ill. However, in my understanding health is a relational concept from a state of complete health to a state of maximal illness. In this framework, a minor reduction of a state of complete health does not entail illness. This article also contains a comparison between my theory of health and Martha Nussbaum's theory of capabilities for dignity.  相似文献

In a recent issue of Bioethics, I argued that compulsory moral bioenhancement should be administered covertly. Alexander Zambrano has criticized this argument on two fronts. First, contrary to my claim, Zambrano claims that the prevention of ultimate harm by covert moral bioenhancement fails to meet conditions for permissible liberty-restricting public health interventions. Second, contrary to my claim, Zambrano claims that covert moral bioenhancement undermines autonomy to a greater degree than does overt moral bioenhancement. In this paper, I rebut both of these arguments, then finish by noting important avenues of research that Zambrano’s arguments motivate.  相似文献

The early history of bioelectromagnetics is reviewed as I experienced it. The period of time chosen extends from my joining the Institute for Physical Foundations of Medicine in Frankfurt in 1937 to the early 1970s, when I retired from the chair of my department at the University of Pennsylvania. Several themes emerge from these recollections. First, clinical and biological work led almost immediately to a heated controversy about the role of athermal vs. thermal effects; this issue has never been settled to the satisfaction of most. Second, good quantitative work on electrical properties and dosimetry began early, well before World War II; its impact on future developments was significant.  相似文献

[In his review essay in this issue of Bioethics,] Julian Savulescu lucidly summarizes and assesses each essay in Strong Medicine. I would like to clarify a few important general points about prior consent as a conceptual framework for the ethical rationing of health care, correct several specific misreadings, and defend my basic claim despite some acknowledged problems.  相似文献

Here we briefly review our understanding of the immune response to myelin-derived glycolipids during an inflammatory autoimmune response in the central nervous system (CNS). We focus primarily on the recognition of the self-glycolipid sulfatide by a distinct population of non-invariant NK T cells. The results of studies we have obtained so far in investigating the presentation of sulfatide by CNS-resident cells including microglia and their interactions with T cells indicate that this pathway might be successfully targeted for the treatment of autoimmune demyelination in multiple sclerosis. Special issue of the Journal dedicated to Drs. Anthony T. Campagnoni and Celia W. Campagnoni. It is a privilege to contribute an article for this special occasion. It was highly rewarding for me to participate in the Journal Club meetings at UCLA initiated by Tony in which experts in Neurochemistry, Neurosciences and Immunology would discuss and learn from each other with passion. I personally enjoyed and benefited both from these meetings and especially from the get-togethers at their lovely home overlooking the Santa Monica hills. I will always treasure my association and friendship with Tony and Celia.  相似文献

Editorial
Since this is the first issue of Soviet Psychology for which I am officially the editor, a few words concerning my approach to presenting Soviet psychological research to my Englishspeaking colleagues appear timely.

It should be clear to all that a quarterly journal of modest proportions cannot thoroughly cover all developments in a largeand active branch of Soviet science. Great selectivity has been, and will be, exercised.  相似文献

How do humans, who are materially composed biological constructs, come to transcend – that is, to see themselves as present in – the world? This article sustains that, in order to understand transcendence in personhood, we have to see the latter as a product of dividual not individual participation, as initially proposed by Lévy-Bruhl and recently developed by a number of phenomenologically inspired cognitive scientists. This being the case, it becomes necessary to account for the relation between essence and existence in the case of metapersons (ghosts, deities, ancestors, some animals, etc.). In this essay, I suggest that this, too, must be explained by reference to the ontogeny of persons-who-wakingly-live-in-the-world. In order to explore this issue, I discuss an occurrence that took place in my presence without my noticing it at the time when I was visiting an Afro-Brazilian temple compound in coastal Bahia (Northeast Brazil) in July 2011.  相似文献

The comment by Stephen Harvey in this issue of the Biophysical Journal concludes with two statements regarding my recent letter about DNA packaging into viral capsids. Harvey agrees with my interpretation of the origin of the large confinement entropy predicted by the molecular-dynamics simulations of his group, and its sensitive dependence on the molecular parameters of their wormlike chain model of double-stranded DNA. On the other hand, he doubts my assertion that the confinement entropy is already included in the interstrand repulsion free energy derived from osmotic stress measurements, which constitutes the major contribution to the packaging free energy used in recent continuum theories of this process. Harvey suggests instead that the confinement entropy should be added to this free energy as a separate term (using, for instance, the method described in my letter). I will argue that this addition is redundant, and, in a brief discussion of continuum theories, will also discuss his comments as relates to the work of other researchers.  相似文献

After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 1948 where I majored in experimental psychology I worked at the College for 2 years with the Johns Hopkins Thermophysiological Unit. My graduate work later at the University of Wisconsin, centering on sensory psychology, culminated in my 1955 PhD thesis on human dark adaptation. I continued work in sensory psychology later with Neal Miller at Yale and then moved to the John B. Pierce Foundation--a Yale affiliate--where I began the studies of thermoregulation that constitute the center of my scientific career. Those studies were largely--later wholly--conducted using microwave energy as a thermal load and were thus published in Bioelectromagnetics even as I played an active role in the Bioelectromagnetics Society. In the beginning this work was centered on the responses of Squirrel Monkeys to thermal loads. Later, serving as Senior Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory at San Antonio, I completed an extensive analysis of thermal regulation in humans. I consider this work of special note inasmuch as the extraordinary human thermoregulatory ability was surely among the attributes that were paramount in initially separating humans from the other anthropoid primates.  相似文献

In this paper I want to try to clarify the nature of the two different problems indicated in the title: there is a lively debate on whether or not genetic selection is a morally licit practice, and there are strong disagreements on whether or not the embryo is a person. I think that most of such controversies depend on confusions and/or unclearness about specific problems involved in each issue, I have no precise normative proposal on the morality of genetic selection, but I hope that my analysis will be helpful in avoiding some current confusions.  相似文献
