A variety of remediation technologies are available to address hydrocarbon contamination, including free product recovery, soil venting, air sparging, groundwater recovery and treatment, and in situ bioremediation. These technologies address hydrocarbon contamination distributed between free, adsorbed, and dissolved phases in both the vadose and saturated zones. Selection of appropriate technologies is dependent on a number of factors, including contaminants, site‐specific characteristics, clean‐up goals, technology feasibility, cost, and regulatory and time requirements. This article describes a decision framework for selecting appropriate remediation technologies at hydrocarbon‐contaminated sites in a structured and tiered manner. Decision modules include (1) site characterization and product recovery; (2) vadosezone treatment: soil venting, bioremediation, and excavation; (3) saturated zone treatment: sparging, bioremediation, groundwater recovery, and excavation; and (4) groundwater treatment: carbon, air stripping, advanced oxidation, and bioreactors. Selection criteria for treatment technologies that address vadose‐ and saturated‐zone soils, as well as recovered groundwater, are described. The decision framework provides a systematic process to formulate solutions to complex problems and documents the rationale for selecting remediation systems designed to achieve closure at hydrocarbon‐contaminated sites.  相似文献

The effectiveness of bioremediation is often a function of the microbial population and how they can be enriched and maintained in an environment. Strategies for inexpensive in situ bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons include stimulation of the indigenous microorganisms by introduction of nutrients (biostimulation) and/or through inoculation of an enriched mixed microbial culture into soil (bioaugmentation). To demonstrate the potential use of bioremediation in soil contaminated with kerosene, a laboratory study with the objective of evaluating and comparing the effects of bioattenuation, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and combined biostimulation and bioaugmentation was performed. The present study dealt with the biodegradation of kerosene in soil under different bioremediation treatment strategies: bioattenuation, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and combined biostimulation and bioaugmentation, respectively. Each treatment strategy contained 10% (w/w) kerosene in soil as a sole source of carbon and energy. After 5 weeks of remediation, the results revealed that bioattenuation, bioaugmentation, biostimulation, and combined biostimulation and bioaugmentation exhibited 44.1%, 67.8%, 83.1%, and 87.3% kerosene degradation, respectively. Also, the total hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria (THDB) count in all the treatments increased with time up till the second week after which it decreased. The highest bacterial growth was observed for combined biostimulation and bioaugmentation treatment strategy. A first-order kinetic model equation was fitted to the biodegradation data to further evaluate the rate of biodegradation and the results showed that the specific degradation rate constant (k) value was comparatively higher for combined biostimulation and bioaugmentation treatment strategy than the values for other treatments. Therefore, value of the kinetic parameter showed that the degree of effectiveness of these bioremediation strategies in the clean up of soil contaminated with kerosene is in the following order: bioattenuation < bioaugmentation < biostimulation < combined biostimulation and bioaugmentation. Conclusively, the present work has defined combined biostimulation and bioaugmentation treatment strategy requirements for kerosene oil degradation and thus opened an avenue for its remediation from contaminated soil.  相似文献

In this opinion paper, we offer our perspective on our bioremediation research along with the methods to assess its effectiveness as a safe and beneficial technology to remediate selected soil sites. The isolation and characterization of bacterial isolates from chemically contaminated soils, their survival and catabolic activity in contaminated soil, toxicity testing in chemically contaminated soils, molecular‐based methods of detection such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA probing are discussed. By using numerous conventional microbiological, chemical techniques, and molecular based methods, bioremediation can be studied in a comprehensive manner and the technology transferred to the commercial sector.  相似文献

The bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)‐contaminated sites is not running smoothly, because of the lower activity of PAH‐degrading bacteria in actual bioremediation applications. The phenomenon of “viable but nonculturable” (VBNC) state may be a main limiting factor for their poor biodegradation capabilities of PAHs. Due to their abilities of entering into the VBNC state, most of bacterial populations with PAH‐degradation potential remain unculturable. Resuscitation of VBNC bacteria will enhance the degradation capability of indigenous bacteria which will eventually obtain their better capabilities in environmental bioremediation. Although evidences have been presented indicating that resuscitation of VBNC bacteria in polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)‐contaminated environments not only significantly enhanced PCB degradation, but also obtained novel highly efficient PCB‐degrading bacteria, scanty information is available on the VBNC bacteria in PAH‐contaminated sites. VBNC bacteria, as a vast majority of potential microbial resource could be the repository of novel highly efficient PAH‐biodegraders. Therefore, studies need to be done on resuscitation of VBNC bacteria to overcome key bottlenecks in bioremediation of PAH‐contaminated sites. This mini‐review provides a new insight into the potential functions of VBNC bacteria in PAHs biodegradation.

Significance and Impact of the Study

As the vast majority microbial resource, viable but nonculturable (VBNC) bacteria, which showed their potential functions in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) biodegradation, can be of great significance in environmental bioremediation. It is therefore important to resuscitate VBNC bacteria for their better capabilities. Meanwhile, preventing the indigenous functional community from entering into the VBNC state will also maintain the high activity of PAH‐degrading bacteria in actual bioremediation applications. Undoubtedly, much more work needs to be done to reveal indigenous micro‐organisms in the VBNC state from the perspective of environmental functions.  相似文献

Bioremediation has been shown to be an effective means of treating petroleum‐contaminated soils in cold areas, although the conditions required to maximize bioremediation in cold region (cryic) soils are not well documented. A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus levels and temperature on petroleum bioremediation. A cryic entisol contaminated with diesel fuel was treated with nitrogen (0, 400, 800, or 1200 mg/kg of soil) and phosphorus (0, 60, 120, or 180 mg/kg of soil) and incubated at two temperatures (10 and 20°C). At 10°C, bioremediation rates were not affected by fertility treatments. At 20°C, reaction rates were increased by the addition of P, but unaffected by N. Regardless of fertility regime, the rate of diesel loss was much greater in soil incubated at 20°C than in soil incubated at 10°C.  相似文献

Biological treatment has become increasingly popular as a remediation method for soils and groundwater contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon, chlorinated solvents, and pesticides. Bioremediation has been considered for application in cold regions such as Arctic and sub-Arctic climates and Antarctica. Studies to date suggest that indigenous microbes suitable for bioremediation exist in soils in these regions. This paper reports on two case studies at the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Island in which indigenous bacteria were found that were capable of mineralizing petroleum hydrocarbons in soil contaminated with crude oil and diesel fuel. All results demonstrate a serious influence of the soil properties on the biostimulation efficiency. Both temperature elevation and fertilizer addition have a more significant impact on the microbial assemblages in the mineral soil than in the organic one. Analysis of the hydrocarbons remaining at the end of the experiments confirmed the bacterial observations. Optimum temperature seems to be around 10 degrees C in organic soil, whereas it was higher in mineral soil. The benefit of adding nutrients was much stronger in mineral than in the organic soil. Overall, this study suggests that biostimulation treatments were driven by soil properties and that ex situ bioremediation for treatment of cold contaminated soils will allow greater control over soil temperature, a limiting factor in cold climates.  相似文献

Aims: The aim of this paper is to check the effect of salinity on the bioremediation process of petroleum hydrocarbons in the saline‐alkaline soil. Methods and Results: In this study, soil salinity was adjusted to different levels by water leaching method and the bioremediation process was conducted for 28 days. Soil pH increased after leaching and decreased during bioremediation process. At initial time, moderate salinity enhanced the biodegradation and addition of microbial consortium was not effective in enhancing degradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons. At day of 28 days, higher degradation rate was found in treatments with more leaching times with a maximum value of 42·36%. Dehydrogenase activity increased with the progress of bioremediation and positive correlation was found between dehydrogenase activity and degradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis result showed decreased microbial community diversity with increased salt content. Conclusions: The result suggested that salinity had great impact on bioremediation, and leaching and addition of inoculated consortium were effective in enhancing biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in the saline‐alkaline soil. Significance and Impact of the Study: The result of this study is important for understanding the bioremediation process of petroleum in contaminated soil. New remediation method of petroleum contaminated soil can be developed based on this study.  相似文献

Dealing with soil contaminated with persistent organic pollutants (POP) is an increasing concern amplified by both regulatory constraints and the dramatic impact of human activities on the soil resource. The most used management options are treatments which totally eradicate the toxic compounds targeted. When possible, environmental-friendly processes should be used, and recent years have seen the emergence of green technologies using biological energies involving microorganisms (bioremediation) and plants (phytoremediation). Research has focused on phytoremediation and many have presented this technology as the process ideally combining efficiency, low cost and environmental acceptance. However, the applicability of phytoremediation on soils contaminated by bio-recalcitrant organic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), has not yet proved as successful as expected. We propose here a review and discussion of the overall question of PAH status in soil and their potential for treatment. The limits and applicability of bioremediation technologies are discussed, and the specific beneficial effect of plants is objectively evaluated with a special interest to processes which lead to rhizoattenuation. Given the PAH high affinity to soil organic matter, availability is the main limitation to phytoremediation. In this context, bioavailability quantification remains an issue as well as the characterization of the recalcitrant fraction.  相似文献

This field study investigated the colonization process of soil contaminated with different petroleum products (petrol, diesel fuel, spent engine oil; dose: 6000 mg of fuel·kg?1 dry mass [d.m.] of soil) by epigeic and edaphic invertebrates during the progress of natural bioremediation and bioremediation enhanced using selected microorganisms (ZB-01 biopreparation). Epigeic fauna was captured using pitfall traps. Occurrence of edaphic fauna in soil samples as well as total petroleum hydrocarbon contents (TPH) were also investigated. Results showed that inoculation with ZB-01 biocenosis allowed the degradation of petroleum derivatives in the soil contaminated with diesel fuel and engine oil, with 82.3% and 75.4% efficiency, respectively. Applying bioremediation to all contaminated soils accelerated the process of recolonization by edaphic invertebrates. However, the 28-month period was too short to observe full population recovery in soils contaminated with diesel fuel and engine oil. Microbe-enhanced bioremediation accelerated recolonization by epigeic invertebrates on soil contaminated with diesel fuel, whereas it exerted inhibitory effect on recolonization of soil contaminated with engine oil (especially by Collembola). The observed discrepancies in the rates of recolonization for soils contaminated with petrol and diesel fuel that were still noted at the stage of no longer different TPH levels justify the idea to include the survey of edaphic faunal density as one of the parameters in the ecological risk assessment of various bioremediation techniques.  相似文献

Summary  Widespread contaimination of the environment by explosives resulting from the manufacture, disposal and testing of munitions is becoming a matter of increasing concern. Most explosives are considered to be a major hazard to biological systems due to their toxic and mutagenic effects. Interest on the bioremediation of land contaminated with explosives has recently been focused on phytoremediation. Unfortunately., whilst plants have many advantages for the remediation of contaminated land and water, they lack the catabolic versatility which enables microorganisms to mineralize such a wide diversity of xenobiotic compounds. This raised the interesting question as to whether the impressive biodegradative capabilities of soil bacteria could be combined with the high biomass and stability of plants to yield an optimal system for in situ bioremediation of explosive residues in soil. Our investigation into the degradation of explosive residues by soil bacteria resulted in the isolation of Enterobacter cloacae PB2, which is capable of utilizing nitrate ester explosives such as pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) and nitroglycerin as the sole source of nitrogen for growth. We have successfully introduced PETN reductase, the enzyme initiating explosive degradation in this organism, into plants to create transgenic plants that degrade explosives. Since the bacterial degradative pathways for many classes of organic pollutant have been elucidated, this may be a generally applicable method of achieving bioremediation of contaminated soil in the environment.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to provide new methods that would increase the rates of biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil, thus reducing the time required to achieve a satisfactory level of residual hydrocarbon in an ex situ bioremediation. Results of laboratory studies on several techniques were used to guide our implementation of these methods in controlled field studies. Soils contaminated with nonvolatile hydrocarbons were treated with various combinations of (1) an anionic surfactant guanidinium cocoate (CGS), (2) a consortium of hydrocarbon‐degrading microorganisms, (3) a slow‐release form of nitrogen:urea, and (4) the bulking agent vermiculite. Laboratory results describing the activity of CGS have been presented previously (Jain et al., 1992). The amount and rate of hydrocarbon loss in treated soil was compared with hydrocarbon lost in soil that received no amendment other than water (water only). We also used a sheen screen method (Nelson et al., 1995), to assess the effectiveness of our field application of microorganisms.  相似文献

There has been growing interest in employing electro‐bioremediation, a hybrid technology of bioremediation and electrokinetics for the treatment of contaminated soil. Knowledge however on the effect of weak electrokinetic conditions on the activity and viability of pollutant‐degrading microorganisms is scarce. Here we present data about the influence of direct current (DC) on the membrane integrity, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) pools, physico‐chemical cell surface properties, degradation kinetics and culturability of fluorene‐degrading Sphingomonas sp. LB126. Flow cytometry was applied to quantify the uptake of propidium iodide (PI) and the membrane potential‐related fluorescence intensities (MPRFI) of individual cells within a population. Adenosine tri‐phosphate contents and fluorene biodegradation rates of bulk cultures were determined and expressed on a per cell basis. The cells' surface hydrophobicity and electric charge were assessed by contact angle and zeta potential measurements respectively. Relative to the control, DC‐exposed cells exhibited up to 60% elevated intracellular ATP levels and yet remained unaffected on all other levels of cellular integrity and functionality tested. Our data suggest that direct current (X = 1 V cm?1; J = 10.2 mA cm?2) as typically used for electrobioremediation measures has no negative effect on the activity of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)‐degrading soil microorganism, thereby filling a serious gap of the current knowledge of the electrobioremediation methodology.  相似文献

Research was conducted to estimate impact of the multiple bioaugmentation on the treatment of soil contaminated by fuels - diesel oil and aircraft fuel. The bacteria used to inoculate the remediation plots were isolated from the polluted soil and proliferated in field conditions. The amount of biomass applied to the polluted soil was set to ensure the total number of bacteria in soil 107-108 cfu/g d.w. The multiple inoculation of soil with indigenous bacteria active in diesel oil and engine oil (plot A) degradation increased bioremediation effectiveness by 50% in comparison to the non-inoculated control soil and by 30% in comparison to the soil that was inoculated only once. The multiple inoculation of soil with indigenous microorganisms was then applied in bioremediation of the soil polluted with double high concentration of diesel oil (soil B) and in bioremediation of the soil polluted with aircraft fuel (soil C). The process efficiency was 80% and 98% removal of TPH for soil B and C, respectively.  相似文献

The present paper is an overview of the presence and fate of pesticides as persistent organic pollutants in the environment as well as of the potential for their detoxification, also combined with chemical and physical treatment. It contains information gathered from a range of currently available sources. The fate of pesticides in the environment is analyzed considering the processes that determine their persistence and mobility, grouped into transport, transfer and transformation processes. Few pesticide characteristics such as persistence, mobility and biodegradability are emphasized. The fate of a pesticide and the potential for its persistence and mobility from the site of application are considered to be affected by the chemical and physical properties of the pesticide, site characteristics such as soil and groundwater individuality, climate and local weather conditions, biological population, and the handling practices of the pesticide user. Bioremediation, as one of the most environmentally‐sound and cost‐effective methods for the decontamination and detoxification of a pesticide‐contaminated environment is discussed especially considering the factors affecting the biodegradability of pesticides such as biological factors and the characteristics of the chemical compounds. In situ and ex situ bioremediation as possible types of bioremediation activities are weighted up. Also, the paper includes some considerations for developing strategies regarding the choice of bioremediation technology, as well as advantages and disadvantages of the bioremediation of environmental components polluted with pesticides.

This study evaluated by biological and chemical analyses the effectiveness of bioremediation of sludge from the petrochemical industry in systems containing artificially contaminated soil. The sludge–soil systems were prepared with three different initial concentrations of sludge, and during bioremediation 86–95% of the hydrocarbons was eliminated. Simultaneously, soil bacterial populations and inhibition of seed germination by aqueous extracts increased in all sludge–soil systems during the first 180 days of treatment. After 1 year of bioremediation, a loss in the catabolic capacity of the Gram-negative bacterial population was observed, but was not dependent on the initial sludge concentration. Furthermore, residual levels of hydrocarbons and seed germination inhibitory effect decreased sharply, but some level of toxicity remained in the systems containing the highest initial sludge concentration. Independent of the initial sludge concentration, the contaminated soils did not re-establish their original features even when residual hydrocarbon concentrations suggested the end of the process.  相似文献
