Thirty-seven individuals with Down syndrome (DS) were divided into four age categories: (i) 1 to < 6 years, (ii) 6 to < 13 years, (iii) 13 to < 20 years, and (iv) over 20 years. Activities of antioxidant enzymes found in individual age categories were different, but the differences between age groups were not statistically significant. We confirmed significantly higher activities of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in blood cells of people with DS as compared to 35 controls, which consisted, for the first time, of siblings of children with DS. No significant differences were found in activities of catalase and glutathione reductase in DS vs. controls. A significant difference was observed in serum concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in DS vs. controls (8.39 +/- 0.34 micromol/l vs. 7.34 +/- 0.27 micromol/l; p = .021) and concentration of MDA in erythrocytes of individuals with DS between the third and fourth age group (p = .05). In DS persons, an elevated ratio of SOD to catalase plus GPx with respect to the controls in all age categories was found, suggesting oxidative imbalance, potentially contributing to accelerated aging observed in these persons.  相似文献

In recent years several studies have been developed to improve the selectivity of the Mediterranean bottom trawl fisheries, which exert high fishing pressure on young individuals. The focus has been mainly on increasing the mesh size in the cod‐end or changing its mesh geometry; few studies have assessed the efficiency of the sorting grid systems. Analysis of 21 trawl hauls carried out at depths of 117–697 m off the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean) in October–November 2005, studied size selectivity of the trawl using flexible sorting grids with 15 (SG15) and 20 (SG20) mm bar spacing. A divided polyamide bottom trawl designed for commercial purposes demonstrated high efficiency for the simultaneous use of both sorting grid sizes at different depth intervals (DS: deep shelf; US: upper slope; MS: middle slope). The results were also compared with those from the authors’ previous studies in the area where 40 mm diamond (DM) and square (SM) mesh cod‐ends were used. A saturation effect was detected on the DS for both sorting grids, due to the large amount of biomass captured at this depth interval. Size selectivity of 11 species was modelled, which showed an increase in length at first capture (L50) from SG15 to SG20. Values of L50 estimated for the main target species were: 10.9 cm total length (TL) with SG15, and 18.9 cm TL with SG20 for Merluccius merluccius; 21.1 mm carapace length (CL) with SG15, and 23.8 mm CL with SG20 for Nephrops norvegicus; and 15.9 mm CL with SG15, and 19.6 mm CL with SG20 for Aristeus antennatus. Comparison of size selectivity parameters between the sorting grids and cod‐ends of different geometry showed clear differences. For most species, the highest value of L50 was obtained with SM (e.g. 26.6 mm CL for N. norvegicus and 22.1 mm CL for A. antennatus). Exceptions were the round‐fish M. merluccius, the flatfish Lepidorhombus boscii, and the crustacean Parapenaeus longirostris, with values of SG20 (18.9 cm TL, 12.1 cm TL, and 25.7 mm CL, respectively) higher than with SM (15.2 cm TL, 10.2 cm TL, and 20.2 mm CL, respectively). Sorting grid selection ranges were broader than those estimated for DM and SM. Experience shows that the exchange of the DM for the SM and/or the introduction of SG20 can improve selectivity in the Mediterranean trawl, SM being more efficient than SG20 in the Balearic Islands.  相似文献

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common behavioral disorder of childhood. Preliminary studies with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) of the brain have reported differences in brain metabolite concentration-to-Cr ratios between individuals with ADHD and unaffected controls in several frontal brain regions including anterior cingulate cortex. Using multivoxel 1H-MRS, we compared 14 individuals affected with ADHD to 20 individuals without ADHD from the same genetic isolate. After controlling by sex, age, and multiple testing, we found significant differences at the right posterior cingulate of the Glx/Cr ratio density distribution function between ADHD cases and controls (P?<?0.05). Furthermore, we found several interactions of metabolite concentration-to-Cr ratio, age, and ADHD status: Ins/Cr and Glx/Cr ratios at the left posterior cingulate, and NAA/Cr at the splenius, right posterior cingulate, and at the left posterior cingulate. We also found a differential metabolite ratio interaction between ADHD cases and controls for Ins/Cr and NAA/Cr at the right striatum. These results show that: (1) NAA/Cr, Glx/Cr, and Ins/Cr ratios, as reported in other studies, exhibit significant differences between ADHD cases and controls; (2) differences of these metabolite ratios between ADHD cases and controls evolve in specific and recognizable patterns throughout age, a finding that replicates previous results obtained by structural MRI, where is demonstrated that brain ontogeny follows a different program in ADHD cases and controls; (3) Ins/Cr and NAA/Cr ratios, at the right striatum, interact in a differential way between ADHD cases and controls. As a whole, these results replicate previous 1H-MRS findings and add new intriguing differential metabolic and ontogeny patterns between ADHD cases and controls that warrant further pursue.  相似文献

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are at high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). Discovering reliable biomarkers which could facilitate early AD diagnosis and be used to predict/monitor disease course would be extremely valuable. To examine if analytes in blood related to amyloid plaques may constitute such biomarkers, we conducted meta‐analyses of studies comparing plasma amyloid beta (Aβ) levels between DS individuals and controls, and between DS individuals with and without dementia. PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for studies investigating the relationship between Aβ plasma concentrations and dementia in DS and 10 studies collectively comprising >1,600 adults, including >1,400 individuals with DS, were included. RevMan 5.3 was used to perform meta‐analyses. Meta‐analyses showed higher plasma Aβ40 (SMD = 1.79, 95% CI [1.14, 2.44], Z = 5.40, p < .00001) and plasma Aβ42 levels (SMD = 1.41, 95% CI [1.15, 1.68], Z = 10.46, p < .00001) in DS individuals than controls, and revealed that DS individuals with dementia had higher plasma Aβ40 levels (SMD = 0.23, 95% CI [0.05, 0.41], Z = 2.54, p = .01) and lower Aβ42/Aβ40 ratios (SMD = ?0.33, 95% CI [?0.63, ?0.03], Z = 2.15, p = .03) than DS individuals without dementia. Our results indicate that plasma Aβ40 levels may constitute a promising biomarker for predicting dementia status in individuals with DS. Further investigations using new ultra‐sensitive assays are required to obtain more reliable results and to investigate to what extent these results may be generalizable beyond the DS population.  相似文献

Context: The validity of urinary correction standards has not been established for most analytes. Methods: We compared urinary creatinine and specific gravity as dilution correction standards for cotinine in a community-based study of smokers.

Results: Models of blood cotinine regressed against CR or SG (measured by total soluble solids) significantly improved the fit compared to a model without a dilution measure (P?<?0.01). There were no differences in model fit between CR- and SG-corrected values. Both CR and SG were significant predictors of urinary cotinine regressed against cigarettes smoked per day (P?<?0.01). Conclusion: CR and SG are valid and interchangeable correction standards.  相似文献

Recently, we showed that the requirement of sterol glucoside (SG) during pexophagy in yeasts is dependent on the species and the nature of peroxisome inducers. Atg26, the enzyme that converts sterol to SG, is essential for degradation of very large methanol-induced peroxisomes, but only partly required for degradation of smaller-sized oleate- and amine-induced peroxisomes in Pichia pastoris. Moreover, oleate- and amine-induced peroxisomes of another yeast, Yarrowia lipolytica, are degraded by an Atg26-independent mechanism. The same is true for degradation of oleate-induced peroxisomes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we review our findings on the specificity of Atg26 function in pexophagy and extend our observations to the role of SG in the cytoplasm to vacuole targeting (Cvt) pathway and bulk autophagy. The results presented here and elsewhere indicate that Atg26 might increase the efficacy of all autophagy-related pathways in P. pastoris, but not in other yeasts. Recently, it was shown that P. pastoris Atg26 (PpAtg26) is required for elongation of the pre-autophagosomal structure (PAS) into the micropexophagic membrane apparatus (MIPA) during micropexophagy. Therefore, we speculate that SG might facilitate elongation of any double membrane from the PAS and this enhancer function of SG becomes essential when extremely large double membranes are formed.

Background: Although hand motor cortex (HMC) has been constantly used for identification of primary motor cortex in magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), neurochemical profiles of HMC have never been assessed independently. As HMC has a constant location and the clinic–anatomic correlation between hand motor function and HMC has been established, we hypothesize that HMC may serve as a promising region of interest in diagnosing ALS.

Patients and methods: Fourteen ALS patients and 14 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) were recruited in this study. An optimized magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) method was developed and for each subject bilateral HMC areas were scanned separately (two-dimensional multi-voxel MRSI, voxel size 0.56?cm3). N-acetyl aspartate (NAA)–creatine (Cr) ratio was measured from HMC and the adjacent postcentral gyrus.

Results: Compared with HC, NAA/Cr ratios from HMC and the postcentral gyrus were significantly reduced in ALS. However, in each group the difference of NAA/Cr ratios between HMC and the postcentral gyrus was not significant. Limb predominance of HMC was not found in either ALS or HC. In ALS, there was a significant difference in NAA/Cr ratio between the most affected HMC and the less affected HMC. A positive relationship between NAA/Cr ratio of HMC and the severity of hand strength (assessed by finger tapping speed) was demonstrated.

Conclusion: Neuronal dysfunction of HMC can differentiate ALS patients from HC when represented as reduced NAA/Cr ratio. Postcentral gyrus could not serve as normal internal reference tissue in diagnosing ALS. Asymmetrical NAA/Cr ratios from bilateral HMC may serve as a promising diagnostic biomarker of ALS at the individual level.  相似文献

Experimental and clinical studies have established that zinc metabolism is altered in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). The present study intends to evaluate the nutritional status of zinc in children with DS by determining their biochemical and dietary parameters. The investigation was carried out on a group of children with DS (n = 35) and compared with a control group (n = 33), both aging between 4 and 11 years. Weight-for-age, height-for-age, and weight-for-height indexes and diet were evaluated by using a 3-day dietary record. Zinc was evaluated in plasma, erythrocytes, and 24-h urine collection by using the method of atomic absorption spectroscopy. The frequency of short stature was higher in children with DS. Both groups presented high protein content, adequate concentrations of lipids and carbohydrates, and deficit in calories. Adequate zinc intake was observed in 40% of children with DS and in 67% of the control group. Zinc concentrations were significantly lower in plasma and urine and higher in erythrocytes of children with DS. The results allowed us to conclude that the altered zinc nutritional status of individuals with Down syndrome contributes to clinical disturbances that usually appear with aging in these patients.  相似文献

Purpose: Children with Down’s syndrome (DS) are considered sedentary and less engaged in recommended physical activity (PA) levels. This study compared the PA levels between children with DS and healthy children in Saudi Arabia.

Methods: The study included 85 children divided into two groups. The DS group comprised 37 children with DS aged 8–12?years recruited from the Down Syndrome Charitable Association and Al-Nahda Schools for DS. The healthy group comprised 41 healthy children aged 8–12?years recruited from regular schools in the same region. PA levels were measured over 7?days using a pedometer.

Results: The healthy group was more active than the DS group (p?p?p?Conclusions: The DS group had a high body mass index and physical inactivity compared with the second group. Obesity and physical inactivity among Saudi Arabian children with and without DS are major health concerns. Therefore, concerted efforts are needed to combat childhood obesity, promote PA, improve patient quality of life, and reduce the sedentary lifestyle among Saudi children and adolescents.  相似文献

Abstract

Objectives: Ischemic stroke is the main neurological cause of acquired incapability in adults and a prominent cause of mortality. Several association studies have been conducted to explore the role of candidate genes in this neurological condition.

Methods: In the present study, we aimed at identification of association between Glutamate Metabotropic Receptor 7 (GRM7) and risk of ischemic stroke in Iranian population. Two intronic variants within this gene (rs6782011 and rs779867) were genotyped in 318 sporadic ischemic stroke cases and 300 unrelated, healthy controls individuals.

Results: No significant difference was found in allele, genotype or haplotype frequencies of these SNPs between cases and controls after correction for multiple comparisons.

Conclusion: Consequently, the assessed GRM7 variants are not implicated in risk of ischemic stroke in Iranian population.  相似文献

Salivary immunity in elderly individuals presented with Candida‐related denture stomatitis Objectives: Elderly individuals with Candida‐related denture stomatitis (DS) present with a reduced defence against Candida albicans. This study evaluated levels of antimicrobial mediators in the elderly DS saliva and salivary neutrophils’ activation characteristics compared with elderly and young without DS. Methods: Salivary peroxidases (SPO) and elastase activities (ELA), nitric oxide (NO), transforming growth factor beta (TGF‐β), IL‐6 and CCL3 production were determined in saliva from elderly with or without DS, and young control individuals. TLR4, CXCR1, CD11b, CD16 and CD32 expression on salivary neutrophils were evaluated. Correlations between number and apoptosis rate of salivary neutrophils, enzymatic activities and cytokine levels were determined. Results: Elderly DS individuals exhibited the lowest SPO and ELA activities. Also, the activity of both enzymes was low in elderly without DS. Although both elderly groups showed higher salivary NO and TGF‐β levels compared to young control groups, elderly DS presented the highest salivary NO, TGF‐β, IL‐6 and CCL3 levels. Decreased percentages of salivary TLR4+ and CD16+ neutrophils were detected in both elderly groups. Although these damages could influence the establishment and persistence of DS, the highest levels of salivary IL‐6 and CCL3 in elderly DS could be preventing more serious complications.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Background: Hybridisation can be a threat for the survival of a rare species because, in the case of insufficient numbers of appropriate mates, a rare form is much more likely to cross with a widespread taxon.

Aims: In the present study, we tested hypotheses concerning the level of hybridisation between endangered Betula humilis and its widespread congeners: B. pendula and B. pubescens as a function of habitat conditions.

Methods: We genotyped 312 individuals of three species using AFLP markers. B. humilis specimens were sampled in populations with low and high groundwater levels. Morphological identification of B. pubescens and B. pendula was verified using the Atkinson discriminant function.

Results: Altogether, 15 individuals (4.8%) were indicated as putative hybrids. The B. humilis hybrids were found in dry habitats and they could be classified as F1 or F2 generation. Tree hybrids could represent backcrosses to either B. pendula or B. pubescens.

Conclusions: Genetic analyses contradicted the idea that hybridisation between B. humilis and its close relatives was extensive. On the other hand, the presence of introgressed individuals in the populations in areas with low groundwater levels implied that pollen swamping might be a threat for declining B. humilis stands.  相似文献

All Bemisia tabaci individuals harbour an obligate bacterial symbiont (Portiera aleyrodidarum), and many also harbour non‐essential facultative symbionts. The association of symbiotic bacteria with the various genetic groups of B. tabaci remains unknown for East Africa. This study aimed to assess any association between the various whitefly genetic groups and the endosymbionts they harbour; to investigate if a unique endosymbiont is associated with super‐abundant whiteflies, and to provide baseline information on endosymbionts of whiteflies for a part of East Africa. Whiteflies collected during surveys in Tanzania were genotyped and screened for the presence of the obligate and six secondary symbionts (SS): Rickettsia (R), Hamiltonella (H), Arsenophonus (A), Wolbachia (W), Cardinium (C) and Fritschea (F). The results revealed the presence of Mediterranean (MED), East Africa 1 (EA1), Indian Ocean (IO) and Sub‐Saharan Africa 1 (SSA1) genetic groups of Bemisia tabaci, with SSA1 further clustered into four sub‐groups: SSA1‐SG1, SSA1‐SG2, SSA1‐SG1/2 and SSA1‐SG3. F was completely absent from all of the whiteflies tested while R was always found in double or multiple infections. In general, no particular symbiont appeared to be associated with the super‐abundant SSA1‐SG1 B. tabaci, although A or AC infections were common among infected individuals. The most striking feature of these super‐abundant whiteflies, dominating cassava mosaic disease pandemic areas, was the high prevalence of individuals uninfected by any of the six SS tested. This study of the endosymbionts of B. tabaci in East Africa showed contrasting patterns of infection in crop and weed hosts.  相似文献

Urinary biomarkers of oxidative stress have been little studied in adults with Down syndrome (DS), usually no more than two biomarkers have been measured in the population studied and controversial results are reported in literature. Thus, we aimed to assess a set of oxidative and nitrosative stress biomarkers in urine samples of adolescents and adults with DS, with and without hypothyroidism, which comprise: 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), isoprostane 15-F2t-IsoP, thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances (TBARS), advanced glycation end products (AGEs), dityrosine (diTyr), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitrite/nitrate (NOx). Fluorimetric and spectrophotometric assays were performed in DS (n = 78), some of them taking levothyroxine for hypothyroidism (n = 24), and in their healthy age-matched controls (n = 65). We found that levels of AGEs, diTyr, H2O2 and NOx are increased in DS patients in any or in all age groups, whereas Cr levels were lower in DS than in controls in all age groups. Besides, correlations with age in DS were positive for diTyr and negative for Cr, TBARS, 15-F2t-IsoP and NOx. We also found lower levels of Cr from 15 to 19 years, higher levels of TBARS and AGEs from 20 to 40 years and higher levels of diTyr from 15 to 40 years in DS patients receiving levothyroxine than in DS without hypothyroidism diagnosed. We conclude that AGEs, diTyr, H2O2 and NOx could be used as oxidative stress biomarkers in DS in contrast to 8-OHdG, 15-F2t-IsoP and TBARS, at least with the methods used. However, renal impairment could occur in DS and Cr adjustment may bias the results, particularly in hypothyroid patients.  相似文献

Background: Several studies performed in the last years on the brain, showed that beta2-microglobulin (β2m) and MHC can act independently of their canonical immune function to regulate normal brain development, synaptic plasticity and behaviour. Increased systemic levels of soluble β2m have been implicated in cognitive impairments like that associated with chronic haemodialysis, or aortic valve replacement. Increased soluble β2m has also been detected in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) of patients with HIV-associated dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Objective: To compare plasma β2m levels in healthy subjects and subjects with dementia or cognitive impairment.

Methods: We measured the concentration of β2m in a cohort of 245 individuals and compared sex matched, cognitive healthy individuals.

Results: We found higher levels of β2m in AD patients compared to non-AD MCI and healthy controls (2063?ng/mL ±852 versus 1613?±?503 and 1832?±?382?ng/mL, pp?>?0.05).

Conclusions: Our data confirm that β2m could play a role in AD. However, a replication study in an independent cohort would be necessary to confirm our preliminary results.  相似文献

Our study investigates the epidemiology of Down syndrome (DS) in the state of Ohio during the 1970s. The occurrence of DS births was examined to learn if statistically significant temporal variation was present among these data. Both monthly and annual numbers of DS births, adjusted for changing numbers of live births, were tested for such variation; furthermore, the data were analyzed for cyclic variation by attempting to fit simple trigonometric functions to the data.

Individuals with DS were ascertained using the records of cytogenetics laboratories and birth certificate records. Demographic data such as race, date of birth, and maternal age were collected on these individuals using their birth certificates as the data source. Appropriate parallel live-birth data were obtained from the Ohio Department of Health. The total number of affected individuals ascertained was 1,364, 66.7% of the total estimated population size. The data analysis was restricted to whites only (1,203 individuals) because they represented a more homogeneous sample than the total.

Monthly and annual variation in the numbers of live births was removed by producing single-year maternal-age adjusted numbers of DS births using the total Ohio white live births as the reference population. Analysis of covariance using single-year maternal ages ≤ 16 and ≥ 45 as the covariate was used to analyze the adjusted numbers of DS births for temporal variation.

No significant differences were detected among the annual adjusted numbers of DS births (P = .24), nor were there differences among the monthly adjusted numbers of DS (P = .37). The modes of ascertainment were tested to learn if there were annual or monthly differences in the method of ascertainment. No significant differences were detected for these data (P = .82 and P = .85, respectively). Furthermore, the data were separated into the maternal-age categories < 35 and ≥ 35, and annual and monthly adjusted DS births to these two maternal-age categories were examined for temporal variation. No significant differences were found among these data, P > .10 for all four of the tests. No simple cyclic functions were found to fit either the annual or monthly data.

The Ohio study reported here showed that through the use of a large sample, controlling for variation in the numbers of live births, and the use of detailed statistical tests, no significant temporal variation in the occurrence of DS births existed during the 1970s.

Loss of telomeric DNA during aging of normal and trisomy 21 human lymphocytes.   总被引:35,自引:4,他引:35  
The telomere hypothesis of cellular aging proposes that loss of telomeric DNA (TTAGGG) from human chromosomes may ultimately cause cell-cycle exit during replicative senescence. Since lymphocytes have a limited replicative capacity and since blood cells were previously shown to lose telomeric DNA during aging in vivo, we wished to determine: (a) whether accelerated telomere loss is associated with the premature immunosenescence of lymphocytes in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and (b) whether telomeric DNA is also lost during aging of lymphocytes in vitro. To investigate the effects of aging and trisomy 21 on telomere loss in vivo, genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood lymphocytes of 140 individuals (age 0-107 years), including 21 DS patients (age 0-45 years). Digestion with restriction enzymes HinfI and RsaI generated terminal restriction fragments (TRFs), which were detected by Southern analysis using a telomere-specific probe (32P-(C3TA2)3). The rate of telomere loss was calculated from the decrease in mean TRF length, as a function of donor age. DS patients showed a significantly higher rate of telomere loss with donor age (133 +/- 15 bp/year) compared with age-matched controls (41 +/- 7.7 bp/year) (P < .0005), suggesting that accelerated telomere loss is a biomarker of premature immunosenescence of DS patients and that it may play a role in this process. Telomere loss during aging in vitro was calculated for lymphocytes from four normal individuals, grown in culture for 10-30 population doublings. To evaluate the potential of the indigenous plant species for Arsenic (As) phytoremediation, a total of 138 plant samples and 138 soil samples from rooting zones were collected from two As-contaminated areas in Kurdistan, western Iran. The areas were the Sari Gunay Gold Mine (SG) and Ali Abad Village (AA). The soil of both areas naturally contains As, with mining activities at SG. Soil and plant samples were collected at five sites in the SG (SG1 to SG5) and at two sites in the AA (AA1 and AA2). Soil samples were analyzed for total and water-soluble As concentration, as well as for the main soil physical and chemical properties such as electrical conductivity (Ec), pH, organic carbon (Corg.), available phosphorus (Pava.), and soil texture. Plant samples were analyzed for As concentration in their shoots and roots.

The average total and water–soluble As concentrations in soil were 751.6 and 6.2 ppm at SG and 920.8 and 8.0 ppm at AA, respectively. The highest root and shoot As concentration was found in Juncus inflexus (751.5 ppm) at AA2 and in Astragalus gossypinus (158.7 ppm) at AA1, respectively. With regard to phytoremediation strategies, Acantholimon brachystachyum, Astragalus gossypinus, Stipa barbata, and Ephedra major with a high translocation factor (TF) can be potentially used for As phytoextraction. However, Juncus inflexus, Phragmites australis, Bromus tomentellus, and Elymus sp., which show high bioconcentration factor (BCF) and low TF, are suggested as good candidates for As phytostabilization. Abstract

Purpose: The frequency of chewing disorders increases with decreasing level of gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Besides its frequency, the severity of chewing disorders is also important. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between chewing performance level and gross motor function, and trunk postural control in children with CP.

Materials and methods: The study included 119 children with CP (age 2–10 years). Chewing performance level was determined by the Karaduman Chewing Performance Scale (KCPS). The Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) was used to determine the level of gross motor function. Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo) was used to measure trunk control.

Results: Children with spastic CP with a median age of 4?years were evaluated, of which 50.4% were male. The percentages of patients classified to GMFCS levels I to V were 43.7%, 6.7%, 9.2%, 5.0%, and 35.3%, respectively. The median KCPS score was 3 (min?=?0, max?=?4). A good correlation was found between KCPS and GMFCS (p?<?.001, r?=?0.70). Negative, excellent correlations between KCPS and SATCo static, SATCo active, and SATCo reactive postural controls were found (p?<?.001, r?=?–0.75, r?=?–0.77, r?=?–0.79; respectively).

Conclusions: The severity of chewing disorders is related to the level of gross motor function and trunk postural control in children with CP.

Abstract

Purpose: Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) has recently been identified as an adipokine possibly involved in the development of impaired glucose metabolism. We aimed to test serum RBP4 in healthy non-obese individuals and in patients with well-characterized phenotype: obesity without confounding effects of diabetes, metabolic syndrome or dyslipidaemia. Additionally, we examined whether serum RBP4 is associated with anthropometric parameters, insulin resistance and blood lipid parameters.

Patients and methods: Twenty-eight patients with obesity and no co-morbidities and twenty-five age-matched lean controls were recruited. Anthropometric parameters, body composition, fasting blood lipid profile, RBP4, glucose and insulin were assessed and HOMA-IR was calculated.

Results: Mean concentration of RBP4 did not differ between studied groups (in obese patients was 33.93?±?4.46?µg/ml and 32.53?±?2.53?µg/ml in non-obese controls). RBP4 positively correlated with serum triglycerides in obese and non-obese individuals (r?=?0.74, p?=?0.03 and r?=?0.62, p?=?0.02, respectively) and did not show any significant associations with HOMA-IR, anthropometric and body composition parameters.

Conclusions: Excessive adiposity without co-morbidities is not associated with higher levels of circulating RBP4. Serum RBP4 cannot be considered as a direct predictive marker for impaired glucose metabolism. RBP4 possibly contributes to lipid metabolism.  相似文献
