We studied variation in arrival date to the breeding colonies in Italy of a trans‐Saharan migratory bird, the barn swallow Hirundo rustica, in relation to variation in ecological conditions, as reflected by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), in the winter quarters. Arrival date of old but not young individuals captured during consecutive breeding seasons was earlier after winters with favourable conditions. Change in arrival date in relation to change in NDVI was similar in the two sexes. Change in arrival date significantly and positively predicted change in breeding date. As a result of increased frequency of second broods determined by earlier arrival, the number of fledged offspring per season was larger after African winters with good in comparison to poor ecological conditions for barn swallows. This is the first study demonstrating phenotypic plasticity in migration phenology of a long‐distance migratory bird in relation to ecological conditions during wintering.  相似文献

Protandry and sexual dimorphism in trans-Saharan migratory birds   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Earlier arrival to reproductive sites of males relative to females(protandry) is widespread among migratory organisms. Diversemechanisms have been proposed that may select for protandry, including competition for limiting resources (e.g., territories)or mates. In species with large variation in male reproductivesuccess, such as polygamous species and those with intense spermcompetition, early arriving males may accrue a fitness advantagebecause they acquire more mates or have larger chances of paternity.Comparative studies of birds have shown that sexual size dimorphism(SSD) is positively associated with the level of polygyny, whereasintense sperm competition is associated with sexual dichromatism(SD). Positive correlations between protandry and SSD or SDcan therefore be expected to exist across avian species. Becauselarge males are predicted to be better able to cope with adverseecological conditions early in the breeding season, selectionfor protandry, in turn, may have a correlated response on SSDamong migratory species breeding in boreal latitudes. Althoughprevious studies of birds have analyzed the association betweenSSD and protandry, none has analyzed SD in relation to protandry. Here we analyze the association between protandry during springmigration, SSD, and SD in 21 trans-Saharan monogamous migratorybird species. The difference in median migration dates betweenfemales and males, reflecting protandry, was positively associatedwith SD but not with SSD. Because dichromatism is positivelyrelated to sperm competition across species, present resultsare consistent with predictions derived from sexual selectionhypotheses for the evolution of protandry mediated by spermcompetition.  相似文献

We tested the novel hypothesis that arrival date in migratorybirds represents a reliable indicator of male quality that canbe used by females as a cue in extrapair mating decisions. Secondarysexual characters are often condition-dependent, and competitionfor early arrival leads to condition-dependent migration. Hence, both secondary sexual characters and arrival date are predictedto be condition-dependent indicators of male phenotypic quality. We studied the relationship between expression of a secondarysexual character, arrival date, and condition, respectively, and extrapair paternity in a Spanish population of barn swallows,Hirundo rustica. By using microsatellite markers to determinepaternity, we showed that 17.8% of all offspring (N = 674) and32.4% of all broods (N = 170) were due to extrapair paternity.Quasi-parasitism (in which the male nest owner fathered theoffspring, but the eggs were laid by another female) occurredin 2.6% of all nestlings and 2.9% of all broods. Individualswere consistent in the frequency of extrapair paternity amongfirst, second, and third broods. Males with long outermost tailfeathers, arriving early and in prime body condition, had littleextrapair paternity in their nests. This was also the case whencontrolling for the confounding effects of male age. Partialcorrelation analysis was used to investigate the direct andindirect effects of tail length, arrival date, and body conditionon extrapair paternity. Body condition accounted for most ofthe variance in extrapair paternity, whereas tail length andarrival date accounted for a smaller proportion of the variance.Body condition was strongly correlated with tail length andarrival date. However, because females cannot directly assesscondition or arrival date (males arrive before females), femalesmay obtain an indirect measure of condition and migration abilityfrom tail length and other phenotypic traits of males. Thissuggests that extrapair paternity depends on the effects ofcondition, through its indirect effects on arrival date, taillength, and other variables.  相似文献

The ability of organisms to respond evolutionarily to rapid climatic change is poorly known. Secondary sexual characters show the potential for rapid evolutionary change, as evidenced by strong divergence among species and high evolvability. Here we show that the length of the outermost tail feathers of males of the socially monogamous barn swallow Hirundo rustica, feathers that provide a mating advantage to males, has increased by more than 1 standard deviation during the period from 1984 to 2003. Barn swallows from the Danish population studied here migrate through the Iberian Peninsula to South Africa in fall, and return along the same route in spring. Environmental conditions on the spring staging grounds in Algeria, as indexed by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, predicted tail length and change in tail length across generations. However, conditions in the winter quarters and at the breeding grounds did not predict change in tail length. Environmental conditions in Algeria in spring showed a temporal deterioration during the study period, associated with a reduction in annual survival rate of male barn swallows. Phenotypic plasticity in tail length of males, estimated as the increase in tail length from the age of 1 to 2 years, decreased during the course of the study. Estimates of directional selection differentials for male tail length with respect to mating success, breeding date, fecundity, survival and total selection showed temporal variation, with the intensity of breeding date selection, survival selection and total selection declining during the study. Response to selection as estimated from the product of heritability and total selection was very similar to the observed temporal change in tail length. These findings provide evidence of rapid micro-evolutionary change in a secondary sexual character during a very short time period, which is associated with a rapid change in environmental conditions.  相似文献

Secondary sexual characters are assumed to be costly to produce and maintain, and this will select for morphological modifications that reduce the magnitude of such costs. Here we test whether a feather ornament, the sexually exaggerated outermost tail feathers of male barn swallows Hirundo rustica, a trait currently subject to a directional female mate preference, and other aspects of the morphology used for flight have been modified to increase aerodynamic performance. This was done by making comparisons among sexes within populations, among individuals varying in tail length within populations, and among populations from different parts of Europe. Male barn swallows experienced reduced drag from their elongated tail feathers by morphological modifications of the ornamental feathers as compared to females. Morphological features of the outermost tail feathers were unrelated to tail length in both males and females within populations. Wing and tail morphology (length of central tail feathers and wings, wing span, wing area, wing loading, and aspect ratio) was modified in males compared to females. Barn swallows with long tails had morphological tail and wing modifications that reduced the cost of a large ornament, and similar modifications were seen among populations. The costs of the exaggerated secondary sexual character were therefore reduced by the presence of cost-reducing morphological modifications. The assumptions of reliable signalling theory, that signals should be costly, but more so to low than to high quality individuals, were not violated because long-tailed male barn swallows had the largest cost-reducing morphological characters.  相似文献

Variation in intensity and targets of sexual selection on multiple traits has been suggested to play a major role in promoting phenotypic differentiation between populations, although the divergence in selection may depend on year, local conditions or age. In this study, we quantified sexual selection for two putative sexual signals across two Central and East European barn swallow (Hirundo rustica rustica) populations from Czech Republic and Romania over multiple years. We then related these differences in selection to variation in sexual characters among barn swallow populations. Our results show that tail length and ventral coloration vary between populations, sexes, and age classes (first‐time breeders vs. experienced birds). We found that selection on tail length was stronger in first‐time breeders than in experienced birds and in males than in females in the Romanian population, while these differences between age groups and sexes were weak in Czech birds. We suggest that the populational difference in selection on tail length might be related to the differences in breeding conditions. Our results show that ventral coloration is darker (i.e., has lower brightness) in the Romanian than in the Czech population, and in experienced birds and males compared with first‐time breeders and females, respectively. The sexual difference in ventral coloration may suggest sexual selection on this trait, which is supported by the significant directional selection of ventral coloration in first‐time breeding males on laying date. However, after controlling for the confounding effect of wing length and tarsus length, the partial directional selection gradient on this trait turned nonsignificant, suggesting that the advantage of dark ventral coloration in early breeding birds is determined by the correlated traits of body size. These findings show that ventral coloration may be advantageous over the breeding season, but the underlying mechanism of this relationship is not clarified.  相似文献

Simultaneous manipulation of tail length and tail asymmetryin male barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) has revealed that femalesprefer maJes with both long and symmetrical tail ornaments overmales with short and asymmetrical ornaments. Fluctuating asymmetryin tail length has a negative effect on the maneuvering abilityof male barn swallows, and females may prefer males with symmetricaltail ornaments because they thereby acquire more direct fitnessbenefits in terms of paternal care. The least preferred maleswith short tails with high asymmetry performed an absolutelyand relatively larger share of feeding of nestlings than themost preferred males. However, the combined feeding rate ofthe pair was not statistically significantly different betweentreatment groups. Fully grown tarsus length and body mass ofoffspring on day 15 did not differ between treatments. Theseresults indicate that females do not prefer males with symmetricaltail ornaments because such males contribute a relatively orabsolutely larger share of parental duties. Although these resultsdo not explain the basis of female choice for long and symmetricaltails, the results are consistent with a hypothesis that femalesof species with biparental care should invest differentiallyin their offspring relative to the quality of their mates. Theresults are also consistent with a hypothesis that preferredmales have access to mates with superior parenting abilities  相似文献

Models of sexual selection in a cline predict the patterns of clinal variation in female mate preference and male secondary sexual characters. These predictions were tested for the nominate subspecies of the barn swallow Hirundo rustica which demonstrates clinal variation in morphology, with several characters in both sexes showing increasing size at higher latitudes. Sexual size dimorphism in the length of the tail ornament and the short, central tail feathers increase with increasing latitude while size dimorphism in other morphological characters is independent of latitude. The main reason for the two divergent patterns of sexual size dimorphism appears to be the higher foraging cost of having a long tail ornamental at low latitudes. The control of development decreases with increasing latitude as demonstrated by an increasing latitudinal cline in fluctuating asymmetry of tail length. Phenotypic variance in tail length increases with latitude in males, but not in females, as shown by the coefficients of variation. Clinal variation in morphology is not due to natural selection associated with a latitudinal increase in the distance between breeding and wintering areas. The geographic patterns of morphological variation suggest that the tail character has diverged geographically as a result of a sexual process of reliable signalling.  相似文献

Interval between clutches, fitness, and climate change   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Timing of optimal reproduction can be affected by the presenceof multiple broods, with multi-brooded species breeding earlier(and later) than the optimal timing of breeding as comparedwith single-brooded species that only need to optimize the timingof a single brood. Approximately two-thirds of barn swallowsHirundo rustica produce 2 broods per year, and I tested whetherthe constraints on timing of reproduction were affected by climatechange because climatic amelioration would allow both an earlierstart and a later termination of reproduction. The durationof the interval between first and second clutches and the variancein the duration increased during 1971–2005 when temperatureduring spring, but not summer, increased rapidly. Interclutchinterval was shorter when mean date of breeding was late andalso among late-breeding individuals during individual years. When clutch size and brood size of the first clutch were large, interval until the second brood increased. Pairs with a longinterval produced more fledglings than pairs with a short interval.Pairs with first broods with strong mean T-cell–mediatedimmune responses took shorter time to start their second clutch, whereas mean body mass or tarsus length of first broods werenot significantly related to interclutch interval. Interclutchinterval increased with the size of a secondary sexual character, the length of the outermost tail feathers of adult male barnswallows, but not with tail length of females, or with sizeof several other phenotypic characters in either sex. Thesefindings are consistent with the hypothesis that the durationof the interclutch interval is determined by a combination ofenvironmental conditions, reproductive effort, and sexual selection.  相似文献

The second and fourth digit length ratio (2D:4D) is sexuallydimorphic in many vertebrates. This ratio has been suggestedto provide an estimate of steroid levels encountered duringprenatal development, which may have organizational consequencesfor physiology and behavior of adults. However, recent studiesshowed that the relation between digit ratio and steroids seemsinconsistent and may vary among species and populations. Wetested the hypothesis that digit ratios would be correlatedwith the expression of secondary sexual characters, using thebarn swallow (Hirundo rustica) as a model system. This was doneby testing whether variation in 2D:4D ratio was correlated withtail length and features of song, which are important secondarysexual characters positively correlated with circulating steroidconcentration in adult birds. Furthermore, we examined the predictionthat male and female digit ratios would correlate with bodymass in an antagonistic way. There was no significant sexualdimorphism in digit ratio, which may be due to low levels ofsexual selection in this population. Adult right 2D:4D ratiowas negatively linked to tail length but not to male song output. Moreover, right 2D:4D ratio was negatively correlated with bodymass in male and positively in females. These results are consistentwith high digit ratios reflecting low levels of testosteronein this bird species.  相似文献

Life-history theory posits trade-offs between fitness components. Reproduction negatively affects physiology and immune systemfunctioning, and the effect of this form of stress may be mediatedby glucocorticosteroids. We manipulated brood size of barnswallows (Hirundo rustica) to study the effect of stress arisingfrom reproductive effort on corticosterone levels of males. We also measured T-cell—mediated immunocompetence by intradermally injecting birds with phytohemagglutinin, whichis mitogenic to T-lymphocytes. The results confirmed the predictionof a negative effect of parental effort on lymphoproliferativeresponse. We found no covariation between immune response andcorticosterone levels. Males with long tails, an ornament currentlyunder directional sexual selection, had a relatively large T-cell response to the mitogen, consistent with models of parasite-mediated sexual selection predicting higher levels of immune defensein highly ornamented males. In addition, males with large sexualornaments had relatively low corticosterone levels at the endof the parental period. These results can be reconciled withthe hypothesis proposing a trade-off between parental activitiesand adaptive immunity and suggest that highly ornamented malesare less exposed or less susceptible to stress arising fromparental effort.  相似文献

The onset of migration in birds is assumed to be primarily under endogenous control in long-distance migrants. Recently, climate changes appear to have been driving a rapid change in breeding area arrival. However, little is known about the climatic factors affecting migratory birds during the migration cycle, or whether recently reported phenological changes are caused by plastic behavioural responses or evolutionary change. Here, we investigate how environmental conditions in the wintering areas as well as en route towards breeding areas affect timing of migration. Using data from 1984 to 2004 covering the entire migration period every year from observatories located in the Middle East and northern Europe, we show that passage of the Sahara Desert is delayed and correlated with improved conditions in the wintering areas. By contrast, migrants travel more rapidly through Europe, and adjust their breeding area arrival time in response to improved environmental conditions en route. Previous studies have reported opposing results from a different migration route through the Mediterranean region (Italy). We argue that the simplest explanation for different phenological patterns at different latitudes and between migratory routes appears to be phenotypic responses to spatial variability in conditions en route.  相似文献

Sexual ornamentation and immunocompetence in the barn swallow   总被引:3,自引:9,他引:3
The handicap hypothesis of honest signaling suggests that secondarysexual characters reliably reflect phenotypic or genotypic qualityof signalers. This hypothesis is based on the assumptions thatsignals are costly to produce and/or maintain and the cost ofa given level of signaling is higher for low quality than forhigh quality signalers. We tested these assumptions in a fieldexperiment in which the size of a secondary sexual character[tail length in male barn swallows (Hirundo rustica)] was experimentallymanipulated. Males were randomly assigned to tail elongation, tail shortening, or two control treatments (tail manipulation,or just capture, ringing, and handling). Male barn swallowswere challenged with an injection of sheep red blood cells, and blood was sampled on the day of first capture and after3 to 4 weeks for determination of concentrations of gamma-globulins.Tail-elongated males did not increase levels of gamma-globulinswhile males of the other three groups demonstrated increases.Analyses of variation in gamma-globulins within treatment groupsrevealed a positive correlation between gamma-globulins andoriginal tail length among males with elongated tails. Theseresults suggest that tail length imposes an immu-nocompetencecost on males, and that males with naturally long tails aredifferentially better able to cope with this cost.  相似文献

Parasites require synchrony with their hosts so if host timing changes with climate change, some parasites may decline and eventually go extinct. Residents and short-distance migrant hosts of the brood parasitic common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus, have advanced their phenology in response to climate change more than long-distance migrants, including the cuckoo itself. Because different parts of Europe show different degrees of climate change, we predicted that use of residents or short-distance migrants as hosts should have declined in areas with greater increase in spring temperature. Comparing relative frequency of parasitism of the two host categories in 23 European countries before and after 1990, when spring temperatures in many areas had started to increase, we found that relative parasitism of residents and short-distance migrants decreased. This change in host use was positively related to increase in spring temperature, consistent with the prediction that relative change in phenology for different migrant classes drives host-use patterns. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that climate change affects the relative abundance of different host races of the common cuckoo.  相似文献

Previous studies have found a relationship between migrationand the degree of elaboration of sexually selected traits, but investigators have differed in the mechanisms they proposedto account for this association. We examined the relationshipbetween song repertoire size and distance migrated among birdsin the genus Vireo. There is a strong positive relationshipbetween migratory distance and repertoire size in this genus, but our data do not support the specific predictions of anyof the three proposed mechanisms (the "rapid pairing," "goodmigrations," and "territory lottery" hypotheses). Migrationdistance is presumably correlated with other life-history characteristicsthat influence the development of sexually selected traits.  相似文献

Phenotypic quality may determine the development and expressionof secondary sexual characters. We studied the relationshipbetween molt and several measures of phenotypic quality in thesexually size-dimorphic barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) in itswinter quarters in Namibia. Males were in a more advanced stageof molt than females and juveniles, and the speed of molt asdetermined from the residual of the regression of the size ofthe gap in wings caused by missing and growing feathers on wingmolt score (residual wing raggedness) was also higher in malesthan in females and juveniles. Male barn swallows with longand symmetric tail feathers had a more advanced stage of moltand molted at a higher speed than males with short and asymmetrictails. Long-tailed females had a delayed molt, and females withasymmetric tails had less advanced molt and lower rates of feathergrowth than females with symmetric tails. Molt of secondariesin juveniles also appeared to be less advanced if they had longtails. Adult barn swallows molted their tail feathers in anirregular sequence with the longest, outermost tail featherusually replaced before the second or the third outermost feathers.Good body condition was positively associated with a high moltscore for some feather tracts and a rapid wing molt in adultfemales and tail molt in juveniles. Mallophaga were only weaklynegatively associated with primary and secondary molt scorein adult females and speed of wing molt in adult males. In conclusion, phenotypic quality of adult male barn swallows as reflectedby the expression of their secondary sexual character duringthe previous molt reliably reflected stage and speed of currentmolt.  相似文献
