Desulfotomaculum carboxydivorans, recently isolated from a full-scale anaerobic wastewater treatment facility, is a sulfate reducer capable of hydrogenogenic growth on carbon monoxide (CO). In the presence of sulfate, the hydrogen formed is used for sulfate reduction. The organism grows rapidly at 200 kPa CO, pH 7.0, and 55°C, with a generation time of 100 min, producing nearly equimolar amounts of H2 and CO2 from CO and H2O. The high specific CO conversion rates, exceeding 0.8 mol CO (g protein)−1 h−1, makes this bacterium an interesting candidate for a biological alternative of the currently employed chemical catalytic water–gas shift reaction to purify synthesis gas (contains mainly H2, CO, and CO2). Furthermore, as D. carboxydivorans is capable of hydrogenotrophic sulfate reduction at partial CO pressures exceeding 100 kPa, it is also a good candidate for biodesulfurization processes using synthesis gas as electron donor at elevated temperatures, e.g., in biological flue gas desulfurization. Although high maximal specific sulfate reduction rates (32 mmol (g protein)−1 h−1) can be obtained, its sulfide tolerance is rather low and pH dependent, i.e., maximally 9 and 5 mM sulfide at pH 7.2 and pH 6.5, respectively.  相似文献

CO2 exchange components of a temperate semi-desert sand grassland ecosystem in Hungary were measured 21 times in 2000–2001 using a closed IRGA system. Stand CO2 uptake and release, soil respiration rate (R s), and micrometeorological values were determined with two types of closed system chambers to investigate the daily courses of gas exchange. The maximum CO2 uptake and release were –3.240 and 1.903 mol m–2 s–1, respectively, indicating a relatively low carbon sequestration potential. The maximum and the minimum R s were 1.470 and 0.226 mol(CO2) m–2 s–1, respectively. Water shortage was probably more effective in decreasing photosynthetic rates than R s, indicating water supply as the primary driving variable for the sink-source relations in this ecosystem type.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and CO2 assimilation (A) in Vicia faba leaves were taken during the first weeks of growth to evaluate the protective effect of 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) against damage caused by the application of the herbicide terbutryn (Terb) at pre-emergence. V. faba seeds were incubated for 24 h in EBR solutions (2 × 10−6 or 2 × 10−5 mM) and immediately sown. Terb was applied at recommended doses (1.47 or 1.96 kg ha−1) at pre-emergence. The highest dose of Terb strongly decreased CO2 assimilation, the maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry in the dark-adapted state (F V/F M), the nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), and the effective quantum yield (ΔF/FM) during the first 3–4 weeks after plant emergence. Moreover, Terb increased the basal quantum yield of nonphotochemical processes (F 0/F M), the degree of reaction center closure (1 − q p), and the fraction of light absorbed in PSII antennae that was dissipated via thermal energy dissipation in the antennae (1 − FV/FM). The herbicide also significantly reduced plant growth at the end of the experiment as well as plant length, dry weight, and number of leaves. The application of EBR to V. faba seeds before sowing strongly diminished the effect of Terb on fluorescence parameters and CO2 assimilation, which recovered 13 days after plant emergence and showed values similar to those of control plants. The protective effect of EBR on CO2 assimilation was detected at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) of 650 μmol m−2 s−1 and the effect on ΔF/FM and photosynthetic electron transport (J) was detected under actinic lightings up to 1750 μmol m−2 s−1. The highest dose of EBR also counteracted the decrease in plant growth caused by Terb, and plants registered the same growth values as controls.  相似文献

Using open top chambers, the effects of elevated O3 (80 nmol mol−1) and elevated CO2 (700 μmol mol−1), alone and in combination, were studied on young trees of Quercus mongolica. The results showed that elevated O3 increased malondialdehyde content and decreased photosynthetic rate after 45 days of exposure, and prolonged exposure (105 days) induced significant increase in electrolyte leakage and reduction of chlorophyll content. All these changes were alleviated by elevated CO2, indicating that oxidative stress on cell membrane and photosynthesis was ameliorated. After 45 days of exposure, elevated O3 stimulated activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11), but the stimulation was dampened under elevated CO2 exposure. Furthermore, ascorbate (AsA) and total phenolics contents were not higher in the combined gas treatment than those in elevated O3 treatment. It indicates that the protective effect of elevated CO2 against O3 stress was achieved hardly by enhancing ROS scavenging ability after 45 days of exposure. After 105 days of exposure, elevated O3 significantly decreased activities of SOD, catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6) and APX and AsA content. Elevated CO2 suppressed the O3-induced decrease, which could ameliorate the oxidative stress in some extent. In addition, elevated CO2 increased total phenolics content in the leaves both under ambient O3 and elevated O3 exposure, which might contribute to the protection against O3-induced oxidative stress as well.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were to characterize photosynthesis of temperate fallow C3herbaceous species and examine the performance of a simple photosynthesis model (based on the Farquhar’s equations) to simulate carbon fluxes at the leaf and canopy levels. The maximum rate of carboxylation at 25°C (V m0) was estimated for sunlit leaves using in situ gas exchange data under saturating irradiance. Throughout the seasons, leaf measurements indicate that values of V m0 were similar for the four major species of the fallow. The rate declined from March (100 μmol m−2 s−1) to July (50 μmol m−2 s−1) and remained almost constant until November. The maximum quantum yield estimated for Potentilla reptans L. (dominant species) was 0.082 mol(CO2) mol−1(photon absorbed), similar to values already published for C3 species. Leaf area index (LAI) increased from winter (less than 0.2 m2 m−2) to spring (up to 4 m2 m−2). Rates of canopy photosynthesis (measured with a canopy chamber) strongly depended on LAI and temperature, in addition to irradiance. They reached a maximum of 25 μmol m−2 s−1 and were intermediate between those published for C4 grassland or cultivated species, and on woody species. At leaf level, simulations gave realistic predictions. At canopy level, the model had the ability to reproduce the effects of environmental and seasonal conditions. However, simulations underestimated the photosynthetic activity of the fallow canopy.  相似文献

A controlled growth chamber experiment was conducted to investigate the short-term water use and photosynthetic responses of 30-d-old carrot seedlings to the combined effects of CO2 concentration (50–1 050 μmol mol−1) and moisture deficits (−5, −30, −55, and −70 kPa). The photosynthetic response data was fitted to a non-rectangular hyperbola model. The estimated parameters were compared for effects of moisture deficit and elevated CO2 concentration (EC). The carboxylation efficiency (α) increased in response to mild moisture stress (−30 kPa) under EC when compared to the unstressed control. However, moderate (−55 kPa) and extreme (−70 kPa) moisture deficits reduced α under EC. Maximum net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) did not differ between mild water deficit and unstressed controls under EC. Moderate and extreme moisture deficits reduced P Nmax by nearly 85 % compared to controls. Dark respiration rate (R D) showed no consistent response to moisture deficit. The CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) was 324 μmol mol−1 for −75 kPa and ranged 63–93 μmol mol−1 for other moisture regimes. Interaction between moisture deficit and EC was noticed for P N, ratio of intercellular and ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a), stomatal conductance (g s ), and transpiration rate (E). P N was maximum and C i/C a was minimum at −30 kPa moisture deficit and at C a of 350 μmol mol−1. The g s and E showed an inverse relationship at all moisture deficit regimes and EC. Water use efficiency (WUE) increased with moisture deficit up to −55 kPa and declined thereafter. EC showed a positive influence towards sustaining P N and increasing WUE only under mild moisture stress, and no beneficial effects of EC were noticed at moderate or extreme moisture deficits.  相似文献

In many coastal areas of South-East Asia, attempts have been made to revive coastal ecosystem by initiating projects that encourage planting of mangrove trees. Compared to the terrestrial trees, mangrove trees possess a higher carbon fixation capacity. It becomes a very significant option for clean development mechanism (CDM) program. However, a reliable method to estimate CO2 fixation capacity of mangrove trees has not been established. Acknowledging the above fact, we decided to set up an estimation method for the CDM program, using gas exchange analysis to estimate mangrove productivity, we put into consideration the net CO2 fixation of reforested Kandelia candel (5-, 10-, and 15-year-old stand). This was estimated by gas exchange analysis and growth curve analysis. In growth curve analysis, we drew a growth curve of a single stand using data of above- and below-ground biomass. In the gas exchange analysis, we calculated CO2 fixation capacity by (1) measuring respiration rate of each organ of stand and calculating respiratory CO2 emission from above- to below-ground biomass. (2) Measuring the single-leaf photosynthetic rate in response to light intensity and calculating the photosynthetic CO2 absorption. (3) We also developed a model for the diurnal changes in temperature, and monthly averages based on one-day estimation of CO2 absorption and emission, which we corrected by this model in order to estimate the net CO2 fixation capacity in response to temperature. Comparing the biomass accumulation of the two methods constructed for the same forest, the above-ground biomass accumulation of 10-year-old forest (34.3 ton ha−1 yr−1) estimated by gas exchange analysis was closely compared to those of growth curve analysis (26.6 ton ha−1 yr−1), suggesting that the gas exchange analysis was capable of estimating mangrove productivity. The validity of the estimated CO2 fixation capacity by the gas exchange analysis and the growth curve analysis was also discussed.  相似文献

InBrassica, self-incompatibility (SI) can be overcome by CO2 application, an effective method for obtaining numerous inbred lines for F, commercial seed. We previously reported two different S-alleles ofBrassica campestris, S733 and S734, with extremely different degrees of susceptibility to this gas. In the current study, we raised a cross-population between those two genetic lines, and analyzed their reaction level of self-incompatibility to CO2 (RLSICO2). Here, all 40 of our progeny from the F1 cross-population were susceptible, maintaining high values of RLSICO2. This suggests that the susceptible line, S734, is dominant to the insusceptible line, S733. We also generated an F2 selfing-population of each crossed progeny, S733♀ S734♂ and S733♂ S734♀, to assess the RLSICO2 of each individual. PCR-RFLP analysis was performed to determine the S-genotype of the F2 population. The S734 allele segregated in a theoretical ratio of the dominant trait, and the RLSICO2 was consistent with the dominance relationship. Therefore, we have now demonstrated that high RLSICO2 in β.campestris is controlled by a dominant gene. Both authors contributed equally to this work  相似文献

This work aimed to evaluate if gas exchange and PSII photochemical activity in maize are affected by different irradiance levels during short-term exposure to elevated CO2. For this purpose gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence were measured on maize plants grown at ambient CO2 concentration (control CO2) and exposed for 4 h to short-term treatments at 800 μmol(CO2) mol−1 (high CO2) at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of either 1,000 μmol m−2 s−1 (control light) or 1,900 μmol m−2 s−1 (high light). At control light, high-CO2 leaves showed a significant decrease of net photosynthetic rate (P N) and a rise in the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a) and water-use efficiency (WUE) compared to control CO2 leaves. No difference between CO2 concentrations for PSII effective photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching (qp) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was detected. Under high light, high-CO2 leaves did not differ in P N, C i/C a, ΦPSII and NPQ, but showed an increase of WUE. These results suggest that at control light photosynthetic apparatus is negatively affected by high CO2 concentration in terms of carbon gain by limitations in photosynthetic dark reaction rather than in photochemistry. At high light, the elevated CO2 concentration did not promote an increase of photosynthesis and photochemistry but only an improvement of water balance due to increased WUE.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of the tropical tree species Acacia nigrescens Oliv. grown at different atmospheric CO2 concentrations—from sub-ambient to super-ambient—have been studied. Light-saturated rates of net photosynthesis (A sat) in A. nigrescens, measured after 120 days exposure, increased significantly from sub-ambient (196 μL L−1) to current ambient (386 μL L−1) CO2 growth conditions but did not increase any further as [CO2] became super-ambient (597 μL L−1). Examination of photosynthetic CO2 response curves, leaf nitrogen content, and leaf thickness showed that this acclimation was most likely caused by reduction in Rubisco activity and a shift towards ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration-limited photosynthesis, but not a consequence of changes in mesophyll conductance. Also, measurements of the maximum efficiency of PSII and the carotenoid to chlorophyll ratio of leaves indicated that it was unlikely that the pattern of A sat seen was a consequence of growth [CO2] induced stress. Many of the photosynthetic responses examined were not linear with respect to the concentration of CO2 but could be explained by current models of photosynthesis.  相似文献

To determine whether long-term growth in elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration [CO2] and nitrogen fertilization affects woody tissue CO2 efflux, we measured stem CO2 efflux as a function of temperature in three different size classes of shoots of Populus nigra L. (clone Jean Pourtet) on two occasions in 2004. Trees were growing in a short rotation coppice in ambient (370 μmol mol−1) and elevated (550 μmol mol−1, realised by a Free Air Carbon dioxide Enrichment system) [CO2], and measurements were performed during the third growing season of the second rotation. Elevated CO2 did not affect Q10 or specific stem CO2 efflux (E10) of overall poplar shoots. The lack of any effect of N on stem CO2 efflux indicated that nutrients were sufficient. Specific stem CO2 efflux differed significantly between shoot sizes, emphasizing the importance of tree size when scaling-up respiration measurements to the stand level. Variation in stem CO2 efflux could not be satisfactorily explained by temperature as the only driving variable. We hypothesize that transport of CO2 with the sapflow might have confounded our results and could explain the high Q10 values reported here. Predicting the respiratory carbon loss in a future elevated [CO2] world must therefore move beyond the single-factor temperature dependent respiration model and involve multiple factors affecting stem CO2 efflux rate.  相似文献

Profiles of subsurface soil CO2 concentration, soil temperature, and soil moisture, and throughfall were measured continuously during the years 2005 and 2006 in 16 locations at the free air CO2 enrichment facility situated within a temperate loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stand. Sampling at these locations followed a 4 by 4 replicated experimental design comprised of two atmospheric CO2 concentration levels (ambient [CO2]a, ambient + 200 ppmv, [CO2]e) and two soil nitrogen (N) deposition levels (ambient, ambient + fertilization at 11.2 gN m−2 year−1). The combination of these measurements permitted indirect estimation of belowground CO2 production and flux profiles in the mineral soil. Adjacent to the soil CO2 profiles, direct (chamber-based) measurements of CO2 fluxes from the soil–litter complex were simultaneously conducted using the automated carbon efflux system. Based on the measured soil CO2 profiles, neither [CO2]e nor N fertilization had a statistically significant effect on seasonal soil CO2, CO2 production, and effluxes from the mineral soil over the study period. Soil moisture and temperature had different effects on CO2 concentration depending on the depth. Variations in CO2 were mostly explained by soil temperature at deeper soil layers, while water content was an important driver at the surface (within the first 10 cm), where CO2 pulses were induced by rainfall events. The soil effluxes were equal to the CO2 production for most of the time, suggesting that the site reached near steady-state conditions. The fluxes estimated from the CO2 profiles were highly correlated to the direct measurements when the soil was neither very dry nor very wet. This suggests that a better parameterization of the soil CO2 diffusivity is required for these soil moisture extremes.  相似文献

Drought is a normal, recurrent feature of climate. In order to understand the potential effect of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration (C a) on ecosystems, it is essential to determine the combined effects of drought and elevated C a (EC) under field conditions. A severe drought occurred in Central Florida in 1998 when precipitation was 88 % less than the average between 1984 and 2002. We determined daytime net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) before, during, and after the drought in the Florida scrub-oak ecosystem exposed to doubled C a in open-top chamber since May 1996. We measured diurnal leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N) of Quercus myrtifolia Willd, the dominant species, during and after the drought. Drought caused a midday depression in NEE and P N at ambient CO2 concentration (AC) and EC. EC mitigated the midday depression in NEE by about 60 % compared to AC and the effect of EC on leaf P N was similar to its effect on NEE. Growth in EC lowered the sensitivity of NEE to air vapor pressure deficit under drought. Thus EC would help the scrub-oak ecosystem to survive the consequences of the effects of rising atmospheric CO2 on climate change, including increased frequency of drought, while simultaneously sequestering more anthropogenic carbon.  相似文献

We determined the interactive effects of irradiance, elevated CO2 concentration (EC), and temperature in carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus). Plants of the cv. Red Core Chantenay (RCC) were grown in a controlled environmental plant growth room and exposed to 3 levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (400, 800, 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1), 3 leaf chamber temperatures (15, 20, 30 °C), and 2 external CO2 concentrations (C a), AC and EC (350 and 750 μmol mol−1, respectively). Rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E) and stomatal conductance (g s ) were measured, along with water use efficiency (WUE) and ratio of internal and external CO2 concentrations (C i/C a). P N revealed an interactive effect between PAR and C a. As PAR increased so did P N under both C a regimes. The g s showed no interactive effects between the three parameters but had singular effects of temperature and PAR. E was strongly influenced by the combination of PAR and temperature. WUE was interactively affected by all three parameters. Maximum WUE occurred at 15 °C and 1 200 μmol m−2 s− 1 PAR under EC. The C i /C a was influenced independently by temperature and C a. Hence photosynthetic responses are interactively affected by changes in irradiance, external CO2 concentration, and temperature. EC significantly compensates the inhibitory effects of high temperature and irradiance on P N and WUE.  相似文献

One-year-old oak (Quercus mongolica Fisch.) seedlings were grown in growth chambers for 30 days to investigate the effects of the combination of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2], 700 μmol/mol) and temperature (ambient T + 4°C) and only elevated temperature (ambient T +4°C) on leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and chlorophyll content. In the growth chambers, natural conditions of the Maoershan mountain regions of Heilongjiang Province (45–46°N, 127–128°E) of China for the average growth season were simulated. The results showed that the maximum net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) was ≈ 1.64 times greater at elevated temperature than at ambient temperature. The irradiance saturation point (I s), apparent quantum yield (AQY), maximum photosystem II efficiency (F v/F m), and chlorophyll content significantly increased, while irradiance compensation point (I c) was not affected by elevated temperature. The combination of elevated [CO2] and temperature also significantly increased P Nmax by approximately 34% but much lower than that under elevated temperature only. In the case of factor combination, dark respiration (R d), I c, F v/F m, and total chlorophyll content increased significantly, while I s and AQY were not affected. Moreover, under elevated [CO2] and temperature, R d and I c, F v/F m were significantly higher than under elevated temperature only. The results indicated that the combination of elevated [CO2] and temperature expected in connection with the further global climate change may affect carbon storage of the coenotype of Q. mongolica in this region of China. Gaseous conditions at natural CO2 springs (mofettes) affect many processes in these unique ecosystems. While the response of plants to extreme and fluctuating CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) is relatively well documented, little is known on microbial life in mofette soil. Therefore, it was the aim of this study to investigate the abundance and diversity of CO2-fixing bacteria in grassland soils in different distances to a natural carbon dioxide spring. Samples of the same soil type were collected from the Stavešinci mofette, a natural CO2 spring which is known for very pure CO2 emissions, at different distances from the CO2 releasing vents, at locations that clearly differed in soil CO2 efflux (from 12.5 to over 200 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 yearly average). Bulk and rhizospheric soil samples were included into analyses. The microbial response was followed by a molecular analysis of cbbL genes, encoding for the large subunit of RubisCO, a carboxylase which is of crucial importance for C assimilation in chemolitoautotrophic microbes. In all samples analyzed, the “red-like” type of cbbL genes could be detected. In contrast, the “green-like” type of cbbL could not be measured by the applied technique. Surprisingly, a reduction of “red-like” cbbL genes copies was observed in bulk soil and rhizosphere samples from the sites with the highest CO2 concentrations. Furthermore, the diversity pattern of “red-like” cbbL genes changed depending on the CO2 regime. This indicates that only a part of the autotrophic CO2-fixing microbes could adapt to the very high CO2 concentrations and adverse life conditions that are governed by mofette gaseous regime. Urška Videmšek, Alexandra Hagn, Michael Schloter, and Dominik Vodnik contributed equally to this study.  相似文献

Using a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment, poplar trees (Populus × euramericana clone I214) were exposed to either ambient or elevated [CO2] from planting, for a 5-year period during canopy development, closure, coppice and re-growth. In each year, measurements were taken of stomatal density (SD, number mm−2) and stomatal index (SI, the proportion of epidermal cells forming stomata). In year 5, measurements were also taken of leaf stomatal conductance (g s, μmol m−2 s−1), photosynthetic CO2 fixation (A, mmol m−2 s−1), instantaneous water-use efficiency (A/E) and the ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 (Ci:Ca). Elevated [CO2] caused reductions in SI in the first year, and in SD in the first 2 years, when the canopy was largely open. In following years, when the canopy had closed, elevated [CO2] had no detectable effects on stomatal numbers or index. In contrast, even after 5 years of exposure to elevated [CO2], g s was reduced, A/E was stimulated, and Ci:Ca was reduced relative to ambient [CO2]. These outcomes from the long-term realistic field conditions of this forest FACE experiment suggest that stomatal numbers (SD and SI) had no role in determining the improved instantaneous leaf-level efficiency of water use under elevated [CO2]. We propose that altered cuticular development during canopy closure may partially explain the changing response of stomata to elevated [CO2], although the mechanism for this remains obscure.  相似文献

The projected increase in global mean temperature could accelerate the turnover of soil organic matter (SOM). Enhanced soil CO2 emissions could feedback on the climate system, depending on the balance between the sensitivity to temperature of net carbon fixation by vegetation and SOM decomposition. Most of the SOM is stabilised by several physico-chemical mechanisms within the soil architecture, but the response of this quantitatively important fraction to increasing temperature is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to relate the temperature sensitivity of decomposition of physical and chemical soil fractions (size fractions, hydrolysis residues), and of bulk soil, to their quality and turnover time. Soil samples were taken from arable and grassland soils from the Swiss Central Plateau, and CO2 production was measured under strictly controlled conditions at 5, 15, 25, and 35 °C by using sequential incubation. Physico-chemical properties of the samples were characterised by measuring elemental composition, surface area, 14C age, and by using DRIFT spectroscopy. CO2 production rates per unit (g) organic carbon (OC) strongly varied between samples, in relation to the difference in the biochemical quality of the substrates. The temperature response of all samples was exponential up to 25 °C, with the largest variability at lower temperatures. Q10 values were negatively related to CO2 production over the whole temperature range, indicating higher temperature sensitivity of SOM of lower quality. In particular, hydrolysis residues, representing a more stabilised SOM pool containing older C, produced less CO2 g−1 OC than non-hydrolysed fractions or bulk samples at lower temperatures, but similar rates at ≥25 °C, leading to higher Q10 values than in other samples. Based on these results and provided that they apply also to other soils it is suggested that because of the higher sensitivity of passive SOM the overall response of SOM to increasing temperatures might be higher than previously expected from SOM models. Finally, surface area measurements revealed that micro-aggregation rather than organo-mineral association mainly contributes to the longer turnover time of SOM isolated by acid hydrolysis.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of season-long exposure of Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and/or ozone (O3) on indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content, activities of IAA oxidase (IAAO) and peroxidase (POD) in needles. Trees grown in open-top chambers (OTC) were exposed to control (ambient O3, 55 nmol mol−1 + ambient CO2, 350 μmol mol−1, CK), elevated CO2 (ambient O3 + high CO2, 700 μmol mol−1, EC) and elevated O3 (high O3, 80 ± 8 nmol mol−1 + ambient CO2, EO) OTCs from 1 June to 30 September. Plants grown in elevated CO2 OTC had a growth increase of axial shoot and needle length, compared to control, by 20% and 10% respectively, while the growth in elevated O3 OTC was 43% and 7% less respectively, than control. An increase in IAA content and POD activity and decrease in IAAO activity were observed in trees exposed to elevated CO2 concentration compared with control. Elevated O3 decreased IAA content and had no significant effect on IAAO activity, but significantly increased POD activity. When trees pre-exposed to elevated CO2 were transferred to elevated O3 (EC–EO) or trees pre-exposed to elevated O3 were transferred to elevated CO2 (EO–EC), IAA content was lower while IAAO activity was higher than that transferred to CK (EC–CK or EO–CK), the change in IAA content was also related to IAAO activity. The results indicated that IAAO and POD activities in Chinese pine needles may be affected by the changes in the atmospheric environment, resulting in the change of IAA metabolism which in turn may cause changes in Chinese pine’s growth.
