Fire activity in the North American boreal region is projected to increase under a warming climate and trigger changes in vegetation composition. In black spruce forests of interior Alaska, fire severity impacts residual organic layer depth which is strongly linked to the relative dominance of deciduous versus coniferous trees in early succession. These alternate successional pathways may be reinforced by biogeochemical processes that affect the relative ability of deciduous versus coniferous trees to acquire limiting nutrients. To test this hypothesis, we examined changes in soil inorganic nitrogen (N) supply and in situ 15N root uptake by aspen (Populus tremuloides) and black spruce (Picea mariana) saplings regenerating in lightly and severely burned sites, 16 years following fire. Fire severity did not impact the composition or magnitude of N supply, and nitrate represented nearly 40 % of total N supply. Both aspen and spruce took up more N in severely burned than in lightly burned sites. Spruce exhibited only a moderately lower rate of nitrate uptake, and a higher ammonium uptake rate than aspen in severely burned sites. At the stand level, differences in species nutrient uptake were magnified, with aspen taking up nearly an order-of-magnitude more N per m2 in severely burned than in lightly burned sites. We suggest that differences in nutrient sinks (biomass) established early in succession and effects of post-fire organic layer depth on nutrient uptake, are key mechanisms reinforcing the opposing stand dominance patterns that have developed in response to variations in organic layer depth.  相似文献

Understanding forest carbon cycling responses to atmospheric N deposition is critical to evaluating ecosystem N dynamics. The natural abundance of 15N (??15N) has been suggested as an efficient and non-invasive tool to monitor N pools and fluxes. In this study, three successional forests in southern China were treated with four levels of N addition. In each treatment, we measured rates of soil N mineralization, nitrification, N2O emission and inorganic N leaching as well as N concentration and ?? 15N of leaves, litters and soils. We found that foliar N concentration and ??15N were higher in the mature broadleaf forest than in the successional pine or mixed forests. Three-year continuous N addition did not change foliar N concentration, but significantly increased foliar ?? 15N (p < 0.05). Also, N addition decreased the ?? 15N of top soil in the N-poor pine and mixed forests and significantly increased that of organic and mineral soils in N-rich broadleaf forests (p < 0.05). In addition, the soil N2O emission flux and inorganic N leaching rate increased with increasing N addition and were positively correlated with the 15N enrichment factor (?? p/s) of forest ecosystems. Our study indicates that ?? 15N of leaf, litter and soil integrates various information on plant species, forest stand age, exogenous N input and soil N transformation and loss, which can be used to monitor N availability and N dynamics in forest ecosystems caused by increasing N deposition in the future.  相似文献

Aboveground and belowground changes during vegetation restoration and vegetation successions need to be characterized in relation to their individual responses to changes in soil resources. We examined above- and belowground vegetation characteristics, soil moisture, and nutrient status at the end of the growing season in 2006 in plots with vegetation succession ages of 2, 4, 6, and 8 years (two replicates each) that had been established on abandoned cropland, where potatoes had been grown for 3 years, using hoe and plow cultivation, immediately prior to vegetation clearance and subsequent natural plant colonization. A plant community comprising pioneer species [e.g., Artemisia capillaries, (subshrub)] was characterized by low levels of species richness (7.5?±?1.4 species m?2), plant density (35.7?±?4.2 stems m?2), fine root length density (940.1?±?90.1 m m?2), and root area density (2.3?±?0.3 m2 m?2) that increased rapidly with time. Aboveground and belowground characteristics of both A. capillaries and the later successional species, Stipa bungeana (C3 perennial grass), increased in the first 6 years, but in the following 2 years A. capillaries declined while S. bungeana thrived. Thus, the fine root length density of A. capillaries, 812.4 m m?2 after 2 years, changed by a factor of 1.7, 2.0, and 0.4 in the 4th, 6th, and 8th years, whereas that of S. bungeana changed from 278.4 m m?2, after 4 years, and by 1.7 and 23.3 times in the 6th and 8th years, respectively. Secondary vegetation succession resulted in reduced soil moisture contents. Soil available P and N mainly influenced aboveground characteristics, while soil moisture mainly influenced belowground characteristics. However, soil moisture had no significant affect on S. bungeana belowground characteristics at the population level in this semiarid region.  相似文献

Green alder (Alnus viridis ssp. fruticosa) is a dominant understory shrub during secondary successional development of upland forests throughout interior Alaska, where it contributes substantially to the nitrogen (N) economy through atmospheric N2 fixation. Across a replicated 200+ year old vegetation chronosequence, we tested the hypotheses that green alder has strong effects on soil chemical properties, and that ecosystem-level N inputs via N2 fixation decrease with secondary successional stand development. Across early-, mid-, and late-successional stands, alder created islands of elevated soil N and carbon (C), depleted soil phosphorus (P), and more acidic soils. These effects translated to the stand-level in response to alder stem density. Although neither N2 fixation nor nodule biomass differed among stand types, increases in alder densities with successional time translated to increasing N inputs. Estimates of annual N inputs by A. viridis averaged across the upland chronosequence (6.6 ± 1.2 kg N ha?1 year?1) are substantially less than inputs during early succession by Alnus tenuifolia growing along Alaskan floodplains. However, late-succession upland forests, where densities of A. viridis are highest, may persist for centuries, depending on fire return interval. This pattern of prolonged N inputs to late successional forests contradicts established theory predicting declines in N2-fixation rates and N2-fixer abundance as stands age.  相似文献

Forest succession may cause changes in nitrogen (N) availability, vegetation and fungal community composition that affect N uptake by trees and their mycorrhizal symbionts. Understanding how these changes affect the functioning of the mycorrhizal symbiosis is of interest to ecosystem ecology because of the fundamental roles mycorrhizae play in providing nutrition to trees and structuring forest ecosystems. We investigated changes in tree and mycorrhizal fungal community composition, the availability and uptake of N by trees and mycorrhizal fungi in a forest undergoing a successional transition (age-related loss of early successional tree taxa). In this system, 82–96% of mycorrhizal hyphae were ectomycorrhizal (EM). As biomass production of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) trees increased, AM hyphae comprised a significantly greater proportion of total fungal hyphae, and the EM contribution to the N requirement of EM-associated tree taxa declined from greater than 75% to less than 60%. Increasing N availability was associated with lower EM hyphal foraging and 15N tracer uptake, yet the EM-associated later-successional species Quercus rubra was nonetheless a stronger competitor for 15N than AM-associated Acer rubrum, likely due to the more extensive nature of the persistent EM hyphal network. These results indicate that successional increases in N availability and co-dominance by AM-associated trees have increased the importance of AM fungi in the mycorrhizal community, while down-regulating EM N acquisition and transfer processes. This work advances understanding of linkages between tree and fungal community composition, and indicates that successional changes in N availability may affect competition between tree taxa with divergent resource acquisition strategies.  相似文献

Soil physicochemical properties and microbes are essential in terrestrial ecosystems through their role in cycling mineral compounds and decomposing organic matter. This study examined the effect of stand age on soil physicochemical properties and microbial community structure in wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.) fields, in order to reveal the mechanism of soil degradation due to long-term stand of L. barbarum. The objective of the study was achieved by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) biomarker analysis of soil samples from L. barbarum fields in Zhongning County, Ningxia Province—the origin of L. barbarum. Five stand ages of L. barbarum were selected, < 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 years (three plots each). The results showed that soil bulk density increased slightly with increasing stand age, while no clear trend was observed in soil pH or total salinity. As the stand age increased, soil organic matter and nutrients first increased before decreasing, with the highest levels being found in year 9. There was an amazing variety of PLFA biomarkers in soil samples at different stand ages. The average concentrations of total, bacterial, fungal, and actinomycete PLFAs in the surface soil initially decreased and then increased, before decreasing with the stand age in summer. The PLFA concentrations of major microbial groups were highest in year 9, with the total PLFA concentrations being 32.97% and 10.67% higher than those in years < 1 and 12, respectively. Higher microbial PLFA concentrations were detected in summer relative to autumn and in the surface relative to the subsurface soil. The highest ratios of Gram-positive to Gram-negative bacterial (G?/G+) and fungal to bacterial (F/B) PLFAs were obtained in year 6, on average 76.09% higher than those at the other four stand ages. The soil environment was most stable in year 6, with no differences between other stand ages. Therefore, soil microbial community structure was strongly influenced by the stand age in year 6 only. The effect of stand age on soil G?/G+ and microbial community structure varied with season and depth; there was little effect for F/B in the 20–40 cm soil layer. Principal component analysis revealed no correlations between microbial PLFA concentrations and total salinity in the soil; negative correlations were noted between soil pH and F/B in summer (P < 0.01), as well as between soil pH and fungal PLFA in autumn (P < 0.05). Moreover, microbial PLFA concentrations were correlated with soil organic matter (mean R = 0.7725), total nitrogen (mean R = 0.8296), total phosphorus (mean R = 0.8175), available nitrogen (mean R = 0.7458), and available phosphorus (mean R = 0.7795) (P < 0.01). On the whole, the soil ecosystem was most stable in year 6, while soil organic matter, nutrients, and microbial PLFA concentrations were maximal in year 9; thereafter, soil fertility indices and microbial concentrations decreased and soil quality declined gradually as the stand age increased. Therefore, farmers should reduce the application rate of fertilizers, especially compound or mixed fertilizers, in L. barbarum fields; organic or bacterial manure can be applied increasingly to improve the soil environment and prolong the economic life of L. barbarum.  相似文献

Iron and aluminum (oxyhydr)oxides are ubiquitous in the soil environment and have the potential to strongly affect the properties of dissolved organic matter. We examined the effect of oxide surfaces on soluble nutrient dynamics and microbial community composition using an incubation of forest floor material in the presence of (1) goethite and quartz, (2) gibbsite and quartz, and (3) quartz surfaces. Forest floor material was incubated over a period of 154 days. Aqueous extracts of the incubations were harvested on days 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, and 154, and concentrations of P, N, PO4 3?, NO2 ?, NO3 ?, and organic C were measured in the solutions. Microbial community composition was examined through pyrosequencing of bacterial and fungal small subunit ribosomal RNA genes on selected dates throughout the incubation. Results indicated that oxide surfaces exerted strong control on soluble nutrient dynamics and on the composition of the decomposer microbial community, while possibly having a small impact on system-level respiration. Goethite and gibbsite surfaces showed preferential adsorption of P-containing and high molar mass organic solutes, but not of N-containing compounds. On average, organic C concentrations were significantly lower in water extractable organic matter (WEOM) solutions from oxide treatments than from the control treatment (P = 0.0037). Microbial community composition varied both among treatments and with increasing time of incubation. Variation in bacterial and fungal community composition exhibited strong-to-moderate correlation with length of incubation, and several WEOM physiochemical characteristics including apparent (weight averaged) molar mass, pH and electrical conductivity. Additionally, variation in bacterial community composition among treatments was correlated with total P (r = 0.60, P < 0.0001), PO4 3? (r = 0.79, P < 0.0001), and organic C (r = 0.36, P = 0.015) concentrations; while variation in fungal communities was correlated with organic C concentrations (r = ?0.48, P = 0.0008) but not with phosphorus concentrations. The relatively small impact of oxide surfaces on system-level microbial respiration of organic matter despite their significant effects on microbial community composition and WEOM dynamics lends additional support to the theory of microbial functional redundancy.  相似文献

Topographic factors strongly affect the diversity of plants and local environmental conditions, yet little is known about their effects on the distribution of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF). By combining morphological and molecular identification methods, we investigated the relationship between EMF communities of Quercus liaotungensis and topographic factors along local slopes in the temperate oak forest on the Loess Plateau of northwest China. ITS-RFLP analysis revealed a high diversity of EMF taxa (135 taxa) associated with Q. liaotungensis along three local slopes. EMF communities among slope sites or slope positions, tended to share major common EMF species, which accounted for more than 80 % of the total EMF abundance, and showed a diverse distribution, which mainly related to rare species. Ordination analyses showed that EMF taxa distribution was significantly correlated with several environmental variables (slope site, slope position, slope gradient, and soil C:N). Topography-mediated changes of environmental conditions may be important determinants of the distribution of EMF taxa along local slopes (slope position and slope site) in the central Loess Plateau.  相似文献

Vast areas of southern Chile are now covered by second-growth forests because of fire and logging. To study successional patterns after moderate-intensity, anthropogenic fire disturbance, we assessed differences in soil properties and N fluxes across a chronosequence of seven successional stands (2–130 years old). We examined current predictions of successional theory concerning changes in the N cycle in forest ecosystems. Seasonal fluctuations of net N mineralization (Nmin) in surface soil and N availability (Na; Na=NH 4 + –N+NO 3 –N) in upper and deep soil horizons were positively correlated with monthly precipitation. In accordance with theoretical predictions, stand age was positively, but weakly related to both Na (r 2=0.282, P<0.001) and total N (Ntot; r 2=0.192, P<0.01), and negatively related to soil C/N ratios (r 2=0.187, P<0.01) in surface soils. A weak linear increase in soil Nmin (upper plus deep soil horizons) was found across the chronosequence (r 2=0.124, P<0.022). Nmin occurred at modest rates in early successional stands, suggesting that soil disturbance did not impair microbial processes. The relationship between N fixation (Nfix) in the litter layer and stand age best fitted a quadratic model (r 2=0.228, P<0.01). In contrast to documented successional trends for most temperate, tropical and Mediterranean forests, non-symbiotic Nfix in the litter layer is a steady N input to unpolluted southern temperate forests during mid and late succession, which may compensate for hydrological losses of organic N from old-growth ecosystems.  相似文献

Boreal coniferous forests are characterized by fairly open canopies where understory vegetation is an important component of ecosystem C and N cycling. We used an ecophysiological approach to study the effects of N additions on uptake and partitioning of C and N in two dominant understory shrubs: deciduous Vaccinium myrtillus in a Picea abies stand and evergreen Vaccinium vitis-idaea in a Pinus sylvestris stand in northern Sweden. N was added to these stands for 16 and 8 years, respectively, at rates of 0, 12.5, and 50 kg N ha?1 year?1. N addition at the highest rate increased foliar N and chlorophyll concentrations in both understory species. Canopy cover of P. abies also increased, decreasing light availability and leaf mass per area of V. myrtillus. Among leaves of either shrub, foliar N content did not explain variation in light-saturated CO2 exchange rates. Instead photosynthetic capacity varied with stomatal conductance possibly reflecting plant hydraulic properties and within-site variation in water availability. Moreover, likely due to increased shading under P. abies and due to water limitations in the sandy soil under P. sylvestris, individuals of the two shrubs did not increase their biomass or shift their allocation between above- and belowground parts in response to N additions. Altogether, our results indicate that the understory shrubs in these systems show little response to N additions in terms of photosynthetic physiology or growth and that changes in their performance are mostly associated with responses of the tree canopy.  相似文献

Linking temporal trends of soil nitrogen (N) transformation with shifting patterns of plants and consequently changes of litter quality during succession is important for understanding developmental patterns of ecosystem function. However, the successional direction of soil N mineralization and nitrification in relation to species shifts in the subtropical regions remains little studied. In this study, successional patterns of net soil N mineralization and nitrification rates, litter-fall, forest floor litter, fine root and soil properties were quantified through a successional sequence in the subtropical forests of eastern China. Net N mineralization rate was ‘U-shaped’ through succession: highest in climax evergreen broad-leaved forest (CE: 1.6?±?0.2 mg-N kg?1 yr?1) and secondary shrubs (SS: 1.4?±?0.2 mg-N kg?1 yr?1), lowest in conifer and evergreen broad-leaved mixed forest (MF: 1.1?±?0.1 mg-N kg?1 yr?1) and intermediate in conifer forest (CF: 1.2?±?0.1 mg-N kg?1 yr?1) and sub-climax forest (SE: 1.2?±?0.2 mg-N kg?1 yr?1). Soil nitrification increased with time (0.02?±?0.1, 0.2?±?0.1, 0.5?±?0.1, 0.2?±?0.1, and 0.6?±?0.1 mg-N kg?1 yr?1 in SS, CF, MF, SE and CE, respectively). Annual production of litter?fall increased through succession. Fine root stocks and total N concentration, soil total N, total carbon (C) and microbial biomass C also followed ‘U?shaped’ temporal trends in succession. Soil bulk density was highest in MF, lowest in CE, and intermediate in SS, CF and SE. Soil pH was significantly lowest in CE. Temporal patterns of soil N mineralization and nitrification were significant related to the growth of conifers (i.e. Pinus massoniana) and associated successional changes of litter-fall, forest floor, fine roots and soil properties. We concluded that, due to lower litter quality, the position of Pinus massoniana along the succession pathway played an important role in controlling temporal trends of soil N transformation.

Mycorrhizal fungi have a key role in nitrogen (N) cycling, particularly in boreal and temperate ecosystems. However, the significance of ectomycorrhizal fungal (EMF) diversity for this important ecosystem function is unknown. Here, EMF taxon-specific N uptake was analyzed via 15N isotope enrichment in complex root-associated assemblages and non-mycorrhizal root tips in controlled experiments. Specific 15N enrichment in ectomycorrhizas, which represents the N influx and export, as well as the exchange of 15N with the N pool of the root tip, was dependent on the fungal identity. Light or water deprivation revealed interspecific response diversity for N uptake. Partial taxon-specific N fluxes for ectomycorrhizas were assessed, and the benefits of EMF assemblages for plant N nutrition were estimated. We demonstrated that ectomycorrhizal assemblages provide advantages for inorganic N uptake compared with non-mycorrhizal roots under environmental constraints but not for unstressed plants. These benefits were realized via stress activation of distinct EMF taxa, which suggests significant functional diversity within EMF assemblages. We developed and validated a model that predicts net N flux into the plant based on taxon-specific 15N enrichment in ectomycorrhizal root tips. These results open a new avenue to characterize the functional traits of EMF taxa in complex communities.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry of a mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand subjected to an average total atmospheric N deposition of 48 kg ha?1 year?1 was studied during the period 1992–2007. The annual amount of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in throughfall (TF) averaged 34 kg ha?1 year?1 over the 16-year monitoring period. The throughfall fluxes contained also considerable amounts of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) (5–8.5 kg N ha?1 year?1), which should be incorporated in the estimate of N flux using throughfall collectors. Throughfall DIN fluxes declined at a rate of ?0.9 kg N ha?1 year?1, mainly due to the decreasing TF fluxes of ammonium (NH4), which accounted for 70% to TF DIN. The decrease in TF DIN was accompanied by a decrease in DIN leaching in the seepage water (?1.6 kg N ha?1 year?1), which occurred exclusively as nitrate (NO3 ?). Nitrate losses in the leachate of the forest floor (LFH) equalled the TF NO3 ? delivered to the LFH-layer. On the contrary, about half of the TF NH4 + was retained within the LFH-layer. Approximately 60% of the TF DIN fluxes were leached indicating that N inputs were far in excess of the N requirements of the forest. For DON, losses were only substantial from the LFH-layer, but no DON was leached in the seepage water. Despite the high N losses through nitrate leaching and NO x emission, the forest was still accumulating N, especially in the aggrading LFH-layer. The forest stand, on the contrary, was found to be a poor N sink.  相似文献

Across northern Alberta, Canada, bogs experience periodic wildfire and, in the Fort McMurray region, are exposed to increasing atmospheric N deposition related to oil sands development. As the fire return interval shortens and/or growing season temperatures increase, the regional peatland CO2–C sink across northern Alberta will likely decrease, but the magnitude of the decrease could be diminished if increasing atmospheric N deposition alters N cycling in a way that stimulates post-fire successional development in bogs. We quantified net ammonification, nitrification, and dissolved organic N (DON) production in surface peat along a post-fire chronosequence of five bogs where we also experimentally manipulated N deposition (no water controls plus 0, 10, and 20 kg N ha?1 yr?1 simulated deposition, as NH4NO3). Initial KCl-extractable NH4+–N, NO3?–N and DON averaged 176?±?6, 54?±?0.2, and 3580?±?40 ng N cm?3, respectively, with no consistent changes as a function of time since fire and no consistent effects of experimental N addition. Net ammonification, nitrification, and DON production averaged 3.8?±?0.3, 1.6?±?0.2, and 14.3?±?2.0 ng N cm?3 d?1, also with no consistent changes as a function of time since fire and no consistent effects of experimental N addition. Our hypothesis that N mineralization would be stimulated after fire because root death would create a pulse of labile soil organic C was not supported, most likely because ericaceous plant roots typically are not killed in boreal bog wildfires. The absence of any N mineralization response to experimental N addition is most likely a result of rapid immobilization of added NH4+–N and NO3?–N in peat with a wide C:N ratio. In these boreal bogs, belowground N cycling is likely characterized by large DON pools that turn over relatively slowly and small DIN pools that turn over relatively rapidly. For Alberta bogs that have persisted at historically low N deposition values and begin to receive higher N deposition related to anthropogenic activities, peat N mineralization processes may be largely unaffected until the peat C:N ratio reaches a point that no longer favors immobilization of NH4+–N and NO3?–N.  相似文献

Lake Huron’s submerged sinkhole habitats are impacted by high-conductivity groundwater that allows photosynthetic cyanobacterial mats to form over thick, carbon-rich sediments. To better understand nutrient cycling in these habitats, we measured the stable isotopic content of carbon and nitrogen in organic and inorganic carbon pools in Middle Island sinkhole, a ~23 m deep feature influenced by both groundwater and overlying lake water. Two distinct sources of dissolved CO2 (DIC) were available to primary producers. Lake water DIC (δ 13C = ?0.1 ‰) differed by +5.9 ‰ from groundwater DIC (δ 13C = ?6.0 ‰). Organic carbon fixed by primary producers reflected the two DIC sources. Phytoplankton utilizing lake water DIC were more enriched in 13C (δ 13C = ?22.2 to ?23.2 ‰) than mat cyanobacteria utilizing groundwater DIC (δ 13C = ?26.3 to ?30.0 ‰). Sinkhole sediments displayed an isotopic signature (δ 13C = ?23.1 ‰) more similar to sedimenting phytoplankton than the cyanobacterial mat. Corroborated by sediment C/N ratios, these data suggest that the carbon deposited in sinkhole sediments originates primarily from planktonic rather than benthic sources. 210Pb/137Cs radiodating suggests rapid sediment accumulation and sub-bottom imaging indicated a massive deposit of organic carbon beneath the sediment surface. We conclude that submerged sinkholes may therefore act as nutrient sinks within the larger lake ecosystem.  相似文献

Switchgrass is a promising bioenergy source that is perennial, productive, native to a broad geographic region, and can grow on marginal, nitrogen (N)-poor soils. Understanding N dynamics in switchgrass is critical to predicting productivity, conserving N, and optimizing the timing of harvest. We examined seasonal changes in N distribution in above- and belowground tissues in switchgrass to quantify N retranslocation rates. Above- and belowground biomass from three sites (two in PA and one in NE) were collected and analyzed for biomass growth and N concentrations at 30-day intervals from June through October. Total living plant mass ranged from 10.3?±?2.4 standard error (SE) to 14.9?±?2.5 SE Mg ha?1. Belowground mass comprised 52–57 % of total mass. Blades had the highest N concentration during summer, ranging from 6 to 22 g kg?1 N. Aboveground N concentrations decreased from September until autumn senescence, whereas belowground N concentration increased from August until senescence. Across the sites, total N retranslocated from aboveground to belowground components between September and October averaged 16.5?±?7.1 (SE)?kg ha?1 N representing 26.7 % of the average maximum N content of aboveground biomass. Based on N fertilizer costs, delayed harvest would conserve some N and provide financial savings on fertilizer ($9 ha?1) if harvest occurs after senescence but before overwinter biomass loss. However, biomass losses of even 10 % will negate potential economic savings accrued from N retention. To maximize environmental and economic savings from N retranslocation and to simultaneously minimize harvest losses, it would be optimal to harvest switchgrass as soon as possible after complete senescence.  相似文献

We investigated community structure, trophic ecology (using stable isotope ratios; 15N/14N, 13C/12C) and reproductive mode of oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) along an altitudinal gradient (2,050–2,900 m) in the Central Alps (Obergurgl, Austria). We hypothesized that (1) the community structure changes with altitude, (2) oribatid mites span over four trophic levels, (3) the proportion of sexual taxa increases with altitude, and (4) the proportion of sexual taxa increases with trophic level, i.e. is positively correlated with the δ15N signatures. Oribatid mite community structure changed with altitude indicating that oribatid mites occupy different niches at different altitudes. Oribatid mites spanned over 12 δ15N units, i.e. about four trophic levels, which is similar to lowland forest ecosystems. The proportion of sexually reproducing taxa increased from 2,050 to 2,900 m suggesting that limited resource availability at high altitudes favors sexual reproduction. Sexual taxa more frequently occurred higher in the food web indicating that the reproductive mode is related to nutrition of oribatid mites. Generally, oribatid mite community structure changed from being decomposer dominated at lower altitude to being dominated by fungal and lichen feeders, and predators at higher altitude. This supports the view that resources from dead organic material become less available with increasing altitude forcing species to feed on living resources such as fungi, lichens and nematodes. Our findings support the hypothesis that limited resource accessibility (at high altitudes) favors sexually reproducing species whereas ample resource supply (at lower altitudes) favors parthenogenetic species.  相似文献

Urbanization alters nitrogen (N) cycling, but the spatiotemporal distribution and impact of these alterations on ecosystems are not well-quantified. We measured atmospheric inorganic N inputs and soil leaching losses along an urbanization gradient from Boston, MA to Harvard Forest in Petersham, MA. Atmospheric N inputs at urban sites (12.3 ± 1.5 kg N ha?1 year?1) were significantly greater than non-urban (5.7 ± 0.5 kg N ha?1 year?1) sites with NH4 + (median value of 77 ± 4 %) contributing thrice as much as NO3 ?. Proximity to urban core correlated positively with NH4 + (R2 = 0.57, p = 0.02) and total inorganic N inputs (R2 = 0.61, p = 0.01); on-road CO2 emissions correlated positively with NO 3 ? inputs (R2 = 0.74, p = 0.003). Inorganic N leaching rates correlated positively with atmospheric N input rates (R2 = 0.61, p = 0.01), but did not differ significantly between urban and non-urban sites (p > 0.05). Our empirical measurements of atmospheric N inputs are greater for urban areas and less for rural areas compared to modeled regional estimates of N deposition. Five of the nine sites had NO 3 ? leached that came almost entirely from nitrification, indicating that the NO3 ? in leachate came from biological processes rather than directly passing through the soil. A significant proportion (17–100 %) of NO 3 ? leached from the other four sites came directly from the atmosphere. Surprisingly, the four sites where atmospheric sources made up the largest proportion of leachate NO3 ? also had relatively low N leaching rates, suggesting that atmospheric N inputs added to terrestrial ecosystems can move to multiple sinks and losses simultaneously, rather than being lost via leaching only after abiotic and biotic sinks have become saturated. This study improves our understanding of atmospheric N deposition and leaching in urban ecosystems, and highlights the need to incorporate urbanization effects in N deposition models.  相似文献

The present study determined the plant biomass (aboveground and belowground) of Salicornia brachiata from six different salt marshes distributed in Indian coastal area over one growing season (September 2014–May 2015). The nutrients concentration and their pools were estimated in plant as well as soil. Belowground biomass in S. brachiata was usually lower than the aboveground biomass. Averaged over different locations, highest biomass was observed in the month of March (2.1 t ha?1) followed by May (1.64 t ha?1), February (1.60 t ha?1), November (0.82 t ha?1) and September (0.05 t ha?1). The averaged aboveground to belowground ratio was 12.0. Aboveground and belowground biomass were negatively correlated with pH of soil, while positively with soil electrical conductivity. Further, there were positive relationships between organic carbon and belowground biomass; and available sodium and aboveground biomass. The nutrient pools in aboveground were always higher than to belowground biomass. Aboveground pools of carbon (543 kg ha?1), nitrogen (48 kg ha?1), phosphorus (4 kg ha?1), sodium (334 kg ha?1) and potassium (37 kg ha?1) were maximum in the month of March 2015. Bioaccumulation and translocation factors for sodium of S. brachiata were more than one showing tolerance to salinity and capability of phytoremediation for the saline soil.  相似文献
