The relationship between record time (tr) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) has been examined in 69 male physical education students who had taken part in 800-m and 1500-m footraces. It was found that tr and VO2max were inversely related. The relationships tr = f(VO2max) have been fitted by two exponential equations: tr (1500 m) = 698e-0.0145VO2max; tr (800 m) = 272e-0.011VO2max; P less than 0.001. A mathematical formulation of the energy conservation principle in supramaximal running, based on the exponential increase of the oxygen uptake as a function of time with a rate constant of 0.025 s-1 has been applied to the tr calculation from VO2max. As calculated tr were highly correlated to measured tr (P less than 0.001), it was concluded that the relationships tr = f(VO2max) can be interpreted on the basis of the model described in this study. 相似文献

Lloyd's equation (Lloyd, 1967 b) has been applied to the calculation of record time in the 1 500 meters foot race from VO2 max. Twenty-eight healthy male subjects participated in this investigation. Record times decrease with increasing VO2 max. The theoretical curve plotted from Lloyd's equation is consistent with this trend. Moreover, the relationship between calculated record times (TRc) and measured record times (TRm) is highly significant (TRc = 74.3 + 0.7 TRm; r = 0.883; P less than 0.001). These results validate Lloyd's equation and hypothesis. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of endurance training on oxygen uptake (VO(2)) kinetics during moderate [below the lactate threshold (LT)] and heavy (above LT) treadmill running. Twenty-three healthy physical education students undertook 6 wk of endurance training that involved continuous and interval running training 3-5 days per week for 20-30 min per session. Before and after the training program, the subjects performed an incremental treadmill test to exhaustion for determination of the LT and the VO(2 max) and a series of 6-min square-wave transitions from rest to running speeds calculated to require 80% of the LT and 50% of the difference between LT and maximal VO(2). The training program caused small (3-4%) but significant increases in LT and maximal VO(2) (P<0.05). The VO(2) kinetics for moderate exercise were not significantly affected by training. For heavy exercise, the time constant and amplitude of the fast component were not significantly affected by training, but the amplitude of the VO(2) slow component was significantly reduced from 321+/-32 to 217+/-23 ml/min (P<0.05). The reduction in the slow component was not significantly correlated to the reduction in blood lactate concentration (r = 0. 39). Although the reduction in the slow component was significantly related to the reduction in minute ventilation (r = 0.46; P<0.05), it was calculated that only 9-14% of the slow component could be attributed to the change in minute ventilation. We conclude that the VO(2) slow component during treadmill running can be attenuated with a short-term program of endurance running training. 相似文献

The purpose of the study was to compare the cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic responses to exercise of highly endurance trained subjects after 3 different nights i.e. a baseline night, a partial sleep deprivation of 3 h in the middle of the night and a 0.25-mg triazolam-induced sleep. Sleep-waking chronobiology and endurance performance capacity were taken into account in the choice of the subjects. Seven subjects exercised on a cycle ergometer for a 10-min warm-up, then for 20 min at a steady exercise intensity (equal to the intensity corresponding to 75% of the predetermined maximal oxygen consumption) followed by an increased intensity until exhaustion. The night with 3 h sleep loss was accompanied by a greater number of periods of wakefulness (P less than 0.01) and fewer periods of stage 2 sleep (P less than 0.05) compared with the results recorded during the baseline night. Triazolam-induced sleep led to an increase in stage 2 sleep (P less than 0.05), a decrease in wakefulness (P less than 0.05) and in stage 3 sleep (P less than 0.05). After partial sleep deprivation, there were statistically significant increases in heart rate (P less than 0.05) and ventilation (P less than 0.05) at submaximal exercise compared with results obtained after the baseline night. Both variables were also significantly enhanced at maximal exercise, while the peak oxygen consumption (VO2) dropped (P less than 0.05) even though the maximal sustained exercise intensity was not different.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Three possible patterns of pacing (type 1, fast/slow; type 2, slow/fast; and type 3, steady rate) were compared over a 1400 m, 4 min run. The subsequent running time to exhaustion at 370 m . min-1 was significantly longer with a type 1 than with a type 2 protocol (P less than 0.05). The steady rate pattern gave results intermediate between type 1 and type 2 pacing. Data for oxygen debt and recovery heart rate confirmed the superiority of type 1 pacing. Possible explanations included (1) a reduction of inefficient anaerobic work, and (2) a greater mechanical efficiency associated with the better matching of required effort to a tapering physiological power. Runners should aim at a steady physiological rather than a steady physical load. 相似文献

Force-, EMG-, and elasticity-velocity relationships at submaximal, maximal and supramaximal running speeds in sprinters 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The relationships between ground reaction forces, electromyographic activity (EMG), elasticity and running velocity were investigated at five speeds from submaximal to supramaximal levels in 11 male and 8 female sprinters. Supramaximal running was performed by a towing system. Reaction forces were measured on a force platform. EMGs were recorded telemetrically with surface electrodes from the vastus lateralis and gastrocnemius muscles, and elasticity of the contact leg was evaluated with spring constant values measured by film analysis. Data showed increases in most of the parameters studied with increasing running speed. At supramaximal velocity (10.36 +/- 0.31 m X s-1; 108.4 +/- 3.8%) the relative increase in running velocity correlated significantly (P less than 0.01) with the relative increase in stride rate of all subjects. In male subjects the relative change in stride rate correlated with the relative change of IEMG in the eccentric phase (P less than 0.05) between maximal and supramaximal runs. Running with the towing system caused a decrease in elasticity during the impact phase but this was significant (P less than 0.05) only in the female sprinters. The average net resultant force in the eccentric and concentric phases correlated significantly (P less than 0.05-0.001) with running velocity and stride length in the maximal run. It is concluded that increased neural activation in supramaximal effort positively affects stride rate and that average net resultant force as a specific force indicator is primarily related to stride length and that the values in this indicator may explain the difference in running velocity between men and women. 相似文献

The present study sought to examine the effect of 5 weeks of training with minimalist footwear on oxygen consumption during walking and running. Thirteen college-aged students (male n = 7, female n = 6, age: 21.7±1.4 years, height: 168.9±8.8 cm, weight: 70.4±15.8 kg, VO2max: 46.6±6.6 ml·kg−1·min−1) participated in the present investigation. The participants did not have experience with minimalist footwear. Participants underwent metabolic testing during walking (5.6 km·hr−1), light running (7.2 km·hr−1), and moderate running (9.6 km·hr−1). The participants completed this assessment barefoot, in running shoes, and in minimalist footwear in a randomized order. The participants underwent 5 weeks of training with the minimalist footwear. Afterwards, participants repeated the metabolic testing. Data was analyzed via repeated measures ANOVA. The analysis revealed a significant (F4,32= 7.576, =0.408, p ≤ 0.001) interaction effect (time × treatment × speed). During the initial assessment, the minimalist footwear condition resulted in greater oxygen consumption at 9.6 km·hr−1 (p ≤ 0.05) compared to the barefoot condition, while the running shoe condition resulted in greater oxygen consumption than both the barefoot and minimalist condition at 7.2 and 9.6 km·hr−1. At post-testing the minimalist footwear was not different at any speed compared to the barefoot condition (p> 0.12). This study suggests that initially minimalist footwear results in greater oxygen consumption than running barefoot, however; with utilization the oxygen consumption becomes similar. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the useful measurement time when evaluating static muscle endurance by comparing various parameters during sustained static gripping for 1, 3 and 6 min. Fifteen males (mean +/- SD age 20.8 +/- 1.3 yr, height 172.9 +/- 4.6 cm, body mass 67.7 +/- 5.7 kg) and fifteen females [mean +/- SD age 20.2 +/- 0.9 yr, height 158.5 +/- 3.2 cm, body mass 55.9 +/- 4.6 kg] volunteered to participate in this study. The subjects performed the sustained static maximal grip test with a sagittal and horizontal arm position for 1, 3 and 6 min on different days. Eleven force-time parameters were selected to evaluate static muscle endurance. The trial-to-trial reliability of each measurement time of sustained static maximal gripping was very high (rxy = 0.887-0.981 (1 min), 0.912-0.993 (3 min), 0.901-0.965 (6 min)). The errors of exertion values between trials were very small (below 10%). A significant correlation was found in the following parameters: the final strength and the exponential function between 1 min and 3 min, all parameters except for the time required to reach 80% of maximal grip, the regression coefficient at post-inflection between 3 min and 6 min, and the decreasing rate between all measurement times (1 min, 3 min, and 6 min). Significant differences between the measurement times were found in all parameters except for the time to 60, 70, and 80% force decreases, and the regression coefficient of pre-inflection. There was a tendency that the longer the measurement time, the larger the decreasing force. It is suggested that for the 6 min measurement, the subjects unconsciously restrained the maximal gripping force, influenced by a psychological factor as the pain became greater. The 1 min measurement may evaluate only the remarkable decreasing phase of the decreasing force, and not evaluate the phase of an almost steady state. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the contribution of ventilation to arterial O2 desaturation during maximal exercise. Nine untrained subjects and 22 trained long-distance runners [age 18-36 yr, maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) 48-74 ml.min-1 x kg-1] volunteered to participate in the study. The subjects performed an incremental exhaustive cycle ergometry test at 70 rpm of pedaling frequency, during which arterial O2 saturation (SaO2) and ventilatory data were collected every minute. SaO2 was estimated with a pulse oximeter. A significant positive correlation was found between SaO2 and end-tidal PO2 (PETO2; r = 0.72, r2 = 0.52, P < 0.001) during maximal exercise. These statistical results suggest that approximately 50% of the variability of SaO2 can be accounted for by differences in PETO2, which reflects alveolar PO2. Furthermore, PETO2 was highly correlated with the ventilatory equivalent for O2 (VE/VO2; r = 0.91, P < 0.001), which indicates that PETO2 could be the result of ventilation stimulated by maximal exercise. Finally, SaO2 was positively related to VE/VO2 during maximal exercise (r = 0.74, r2 = 0.55, P < 0.001). Therefore, one-half of the arterial O2 desaturation occurring during maximal exercise may be explained by less hyperventilation, specifically for our subjects, who demonstrated a wide range of trained states. Furthermore, we found an indirect positive correlation between SaO2 and ventilatory response to CO2 at rest (r = 0.45, P < 0.05), which was mediated by ventilation during maximal exercise. These data also suggest that ventilation is an important factor for arterial O2 desaturation during maximal exercise. 相似文献

The anion nitrate—abundant in our diet—has recently emerged as a major pool of nitric oxide (NO) synthase-independent NO production. Nitrate is reduced stepwise in vivo to nitrite and then NO and possibly other bioactive nitrogen oxides. This reductive pathway is enhanced during low oxygen tension and acidosis. A recent study shows a reduction in oxygen consumption during submaximal exercise attributable to dietary nitrate. We went on to study the effects of dietary nitrate on various physiological and biochemical parameters during maximal exercise. Nine healthy, nonsmoking volunteers (age 30 ± 2.3 years, VO2max 3.72 ± 0.33 L/min) participated in this study, which had a randomized, double-blind crossover design. Subjects received dietary supplementation with sodium nitrate (0.1 mmol/kg/day) or placebo (NaCl) for 2 days before the test. This dose corresponds to the amount found in 100–300 g of a nitrate-rich vegetable such as spinach or beetroot. The maximal exercise tests consisted of an incremental exercise to exhaustion with combined arm and leg cranking on two separate ergometers. Dietary nitrate reduced VO2max from 3.72 ± 0.33 to 3.62 ± 0.31 L/min, P < 0.05. Despite the reduction in VO2max the time to exhaustion trended to an increase after nitrate supplementation (524 ± 31 vs 563 ± 30 s, P = 0.13). There was a correlation between the change in time to exhaustion and the change in VO2max (R2 = 0.47, P = 0.04). A moderate dietary dose of nitrate significantly reduces VO2max during maximal exercise using a large active muscle mass. This reduction occurred with a trend toward increased time to exhaustion implying that two separate mechanisms are involved: one that reduces VO2max and another that improves the energetic function of the working muscles. 相似文献

The energy equivalent of plasma lactate production (ELAp) represents the amount of energy that can be derived from the anaerobic glycolysis per kg body weight when the peak plasma lactate concentration (LAp) after exercise increases by 1 mM. ELAp has been calculated from the relationship between the oxygen deficit (Do2) and LAp in 32 subjects. LAp and oxygen uptake measurements were made during constant speed supramaximal running until exhaustion or during the course of constant-speed supramaximal runs of different duration interrupted by 8- to 10- min resting periods. The relationship between Do2 and LAp is described by a linear equation where the slope is equal to ELAp. This equation is: Do2 = 12.3 + 2.4 LAp (r = 0.958; P less than 0.001), where Do2 is expressed in ml O2/kg and LAp in mmol/litre (mM). These findings validate LAp measurements as an index of the anaerobic metabolism during supramaximal running. 相似文献

This study was designed to determine the accuracy of estimated values of maximal heart rate (HRmax) and oxygen consumption (VO2) during pregnancy. We measured HR and maximal VO2 (VO2max) at rest and during cycle (CE) and treadmill exercise (TE) tests with rapidly increasing exercise intensities during gestation and after delivery. Pregnancy was found to affect the linear relationship of HR and %VO2max so that the intercept increases with advancing gestation and the slope decreases. Estimated maximal HR (HRmax, est), 220 - age (yr) x beats/min, overestimated measured HRmax by 8% (CE) and 5% (TE). For VO2max estimated by Astrand's nomogram (VO2max, est1) and by linear extrapolation of submaximal values of HR and VO2 to HRmax, est (VO2max, est2), individual errors were large (SD 17-28%). Mean VO2max, est1 overestimated measured VO2max by 20% during CE but not during TE (-2%) and elicited the erroneous impression that VO2max decreases during CE in pregnancy. Mean VO2max, est2 values were not significantly different from measured VO2max values. This apparent accuracy resulted from two opposing errors: 1) HRmax, est overestimated HRmax, and 2) above 70% VO2max the slope of the HR-%VO2max relationship was significantly reduced. Therefore neither method to estimate VO2max can replace the measurement of VO2max. 相似文献

1. | Maximal oxygen consumption rates ( [(V)\dot]\textO\text2 \dot V_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}} } max; units, ml/g·h) were determined for four species of amphibians representing four families with habitat preferences varying from aquatic to terrestrial. Measured [(V)\dot]\textO\text2 \dot V_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}} } max were:Xenopus laevis (aquatic), 1.33±0.16;Rana pipiens (semi-terrestrial), 0.54±0.10;Bufo cognatus (terrestrial), 1.91±0.26; andScaphiopus couchii (terrestrial), 1.91±0.26. |
2. | In order to assess possible cardiovascular bases for these interspecific differences, heart rate increments (differences between resting and active heart rates) and ventricle weights were measured to evaluate differential cardiac outputs. In order to assess possible differential blood oxygen capacities, hematocrits and hemoglobin concentrations were measured. Blood volumes were determined to assess total blood oxygen storage capacities. |
3. | Ventricle weights were statisticaly significantly different (p<0.01) between=" all=">0.01)>B. cognatus>S. couchii>X. laevis>R. pipiens. These differences were closely positively correlated with the maximal metabolic rates of the species (Fig. 3a). |
4. | There were no differences in heart rate increments between the four species (Fig. 2). |
5. | Blood oxygen capacities were directly correlated with hemoglobin concentrations (Fig. 1). There were no interspecific differences in the amounts of oxygen bound per gram of hemoglobin (1.3 ml O2/g Hb). Blood oxygen capacities were significantly different in the following sequence;X. laevis >S. couchii andB. cognatus>R. pipiens. |
6. | X. laevis had statistically significantly greater hematocrits than did the other three species.R. pipiens had significantly lower mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations. |
7. | Blood volumes were statistically significantly different between all species examined,S. couchii>B. cognatus>X. laevis>R. pipiens. |
8. | It is suggested that greater maximal oxygen consumption rates in anurans are correlated with 1) increased cardiac outputs based upon increased stroke volumes, 2) increased blood oxygen capacities due to either increased mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration or increased hematocrit. Increased selective pressure for aerobic metabolism is also closely positively correlated with maximal blood oxygen storage capabilities. |

Previous work with pregnant ewes has shown that acute bouts of exercise may cause changes in plasma hormone concentrations, blood flow distribution, and maternal and fetal temperatures. However, most of these studies do not quantify the chosen exercise intensity through measurement of oxygen consumption (VO2). Therefore the purpose of this study was to statistically model the VO2 response of pregnant sheep to treadmill (TM) exercise to determine the exercise intensities (% maximal VO2) of previous studies. Ewes with either single (n = 9) or twin (n = 5) fetuses were studied from 100 to 130 days of gestation. After 1-2 wk of TM habituation, maximal VO2 (VO2max) was determined by measurements of VO2 (open flow-through method) and blood lactate concentration. VO2 was measured as a function of TM incline (0, 3, 5, and 7 degree) and speed (0.8-3.4 m/s). VO2max averaged 57 +/- 7 (SD) ml.min-1.kg-1, and peak lactate concentration during exercise averaged 22 +/- 2 mmol/l. The relationship between VO2 (ml.min-1.kg-1) and incline (INC) and speed (SP) [VO2 = 0.70(INC) + 13.95(SP) + 1.07(INC x SP) - 1.18] was linear (r2 = 0.94). Our findings suggest that most previous research used exercise intensities less than 60% VO2max and indicate the need for further research that examines the effect of exercise during pregnancy at levels greater than 60% VO2max. 相似文献

Appl.Physiol. 82(2): 661-666, 1997.Although exerciseintensity has been identified as a major determinant of the excesspostexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), no studies have compared theEPOC after submaximal continuous running and supramaximal intervalrunning. Eight male middle-distance runners [age = 21.1 ± 3.1 (SD) yr; mass = 67.8 ± 5.1 kg; maximal oxygen consumption(O2 max) = 69.2 ± 4.0 ml · kg1 · min1] thereforecompleted two equated treatments of treadmill running (continuousrunning: 30 min at 70%O2 max; intervalrunning: 20 × 1-min intervals at 105%O2 max withintervening 2-min rest periods) and a control session (no exercise) ina counterbalanced research design. The 9-h EPOC values were 6.9 ± 3.8 and 15.0 ± 3.3 liters (t-test:P = 0.001) for the submaximal andsupramaximal treatments, respectively. These values represent 7.1 and13.8% of the net total oxygen cost of both treatments. Notwithstanding the higher EPOC for supramaximal interval running compared with submaximal continuous running, the major contribution of both to weightloss is therefore via the energy expended during the actual exercise. 相似文献

The interaction between myocardial function, oxygen consumption and energy production was examined in the left ventricular myocardium during various physiological conditions. Myocardial function was measured by both LV dP/dTmax and by local contractile tension. Coronary blood flow was measured from the coronary sinus; regional coronary blood supply was recorded using a thermistor placed on the epicardial surface. Intracellular oxygen balance was estimated using NADH fluorescence. Myocardial oxygen consumption and utilization of glucose, pyruvate, lactate and free fatty acids were calculated from their concentrations in the arterial and coronary sinus blood. The effects of tachycardia at 180 and 240 bpm, noradrenaline infusion (25 micrograms kg-1 min-1), and increased coronary blood flow caused by hypopneic respiration were examined. During pacing, contractile force, coronary flow and NADH fluorescence increased. At 240 bpm, the lactate/pyruvate ratio increased from 5.98 +/- 0.92 to 8.76 +/- 1.41 and NADH fluorescence increased from 50 to 71.7 +/- 3.73 (as compared to control), indicating impairment of myocardial oxygenation. Hypopneic respiration produced a marked elevation of coronary blood flow. Both noradrenaline infusion and hypopnea produced a decrease in both NADH fluorescence and the lactate/pyruvate ratio. No significant difference was found between the FORCE/ATP, FORCE/MVO2 and ATP/MVO2 ratios during pacing and noradrenaline. However, during hypopnea, the amount of ATP apparently formed (as calculated by substrate utilization assuming the formation of 3 ATP molecules per oxygen) was disproportionately greater than contractile force and oxygen consumption. It is suggested that this discrepancy may be due to the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation. 相似文献
