In Guadeloupe (French West Indies), paddocks were contaminated with gastrointestinal helminth eggs by young goats during the rainy season and the dry season. The evolution of L3 population size on herbage was followed over a period of 56 days. The major genera were Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus. It was shown that the L3 appeared on herbage 7-14 days after the beginning of contamination (DAC), and the L3 population sizes were maximal between the 14th and the 21st DAC. The maximum duration of larval survival ranged between 49 and 56 days. There was a marked depressive effect by the dry season on eggs hatching and L3 development with some arrested egg hatching in Trichostrongylus. The climatic events and the amount of dry matter on pastures during the grazing period appeared as the main important factors which could interfere with the overall evolution of the L3 population size and there was no preferential direction of L3 migration from faeces to herbage.  相似文献

The rate of dung-pat degradation in cattle pastures in south west England was examined between May and September 2002, using batches of standardized, 1.5 kg, artificially-formed cow pats. In pats in which insects were allowed free access, the rate of disappearance, measured as ash-free dry weight, was faster in spring than summer and the loss of organic matter ranged between 0.69 and 1.99% per day, equating to an estimated time for complete disappearance of 57-78 and 88-111 days in spring and summer, respectively. To assess the role of colonizing insects on decomposition, six batches of pats were constructed and either left uncovered or, using fine mesh cages, were covered for 2, 7 or 14 days following deposition to exclude colonizing insects, after which they were uncovered. After 35 days all pats were then retrieved from the field, the composition of the invertebrate community within each pat was determined and the degree of degradation, measured as ash-free dry weight, was assessed. Covered pats had significantly higher rates of ash-free dry weight loss than uncovered pats. From the 180 pats that were recovered and searched, larvae of Aphodius (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were the most numerous taxon collected (1435 individuals). Aphodius larvae were significantly more abundant in pats that remained uncovered or were covered for 2 days only, compared to pats that had been covered for 7 or 14 days. The results show that the exclusion of insects for as little as two days following deposition causes a significant reduction in both the insect population and the subsequent rate of pat degradation.  相似文献

Development, migration and survival of infective larvae (L3) were studied in the Western Pampeana Region. Faeces of naturally nematode infected cattle were deposited as artificial pats on plots during mid-spring-summer of 1994/1995 and 1995/1996. Since the start and during 1995, the study coincided with a severe drought, rainfalls being 29% below the 45-year means. The predominant genera recovered were Cooperia, Ostertagia and Haemonchus. Initial and peak recovery of L3 from pats occurred 8-15 and 15-21 days later respectively. A low percentage of L3 survived from November (0.3% L3) and January (0.06% L3) to the following autumn and winter. The mean persistence of larvae detected in pats or herbage was around 200 days from deposition. The migration of L3 from faecal pats to herbage started 15 to 30 days after deposition according to rainfall occurrence. Maximum herbage recoveries of L3 from pats deposited in late summer occur during autumn rainfalls. Only, few L3 were occasionally recovered from soil. Summer conditions were associated with rapid development and translation of L3 to herbage, but also with low L3 detection after initial recoveries. Faecal pats deposited from mid-summer were the main source of autumn herbage contamination.  相似文献

Two Elsholtzia haichowensis Sun populations, one from Cu mine sites (Tonglushan) and the other from uncontaminated sites (Hong'an) in Hubei Province, China, were investigated in hydroponic experiments for the differences of Cu accumulation and ecophysiological responses to Cu under Cu treatment. The results showed that a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in roots was observed in Hong'an population, whereas no significant change was observed in Tonglushan population. The root pressure exudates (ml) decreased significantly in Hong'an population, but increased significantly in Tonglushan population at high Cu concentration (≥ 20 μ mol/L) treatment. Cu concentration in roots of Hong'an population was significantly higher than that in Tonglushan population. For example, Cu concentration in Hong'an population was 3 times and 4 times higher than that in Tonglushan population after 20 μ mol/L Cu treatment for one day and three days, respectively. Cu concentration in Hong'an population was 20 times and 5 times higher than that in Tonglushan population after 80 μ mol/L Cu treatment for one day and three days, respectively. The intracellular and secreted acid phosphatase (APase) activities in roots were significantly higher in Tonglushan population than in Hong'an one. The intracellular APase activities in Tonglushan population were 3 times higher than those in Hong'an population after 80 μ mol/L Cu treatment for three days and five days, respectively. The root-secreted APase activities in Tonglushan population were 1.6 times and 1.8 times higher than those in Hong'an population after 80 μ mol/L Cu treatment for three days and five days, respectively. In conclusion, excessive Cu caused serious oxidative damage in roots of Hong'an population, but not in Tonglushan population. The high intracellular and root-excreted APase activities in Tonglushan population might play an important role in reducing Cu accumulation in roots and maintaining normal phosphorus physiological metabolism in root cells under Cu stress.  相似文献

连续2a研究了施尿量(4,2,1L/m2和0 L/m2)和施尿期(营养期和生殖期)对典型草原多年生密丛型禾本科植物长芒草(Stipa bungeana)、多年生轴根型菊科植物茵陈蒿(Artemisia capillaries)和多年生半灌木豆科植物胡枝子(Lespedeza davurica)生长特性的影响.结果表明,不同植物对畜尿沉积的响应不同,并受施尿量和施尿时期的作用.畜尿对草地植物具短期(4周内)灼烧作用,灼烧主要发生于尿斑中心;畜尿对长芒草生长具长期正效应(4周后),对茵陈蒿和胡枝子生长具持续负效应,此效应持续至少2a且随施尿量降低而降低.一般尿斑中心(4 L/m2)所有植物伤害,尿斑中心至边缘圈植物局部器官(嫩枝叶)伤害(2~4 L/m2),尿斑外渗区域(1~2 L/m2)所有植物无显著伤害.高施尿量(2~4 L/m2)下,长芒草具较高的年均分蘖数和地上生物量,而胡枝子和茵陈蒿与之相反.尿斑处3种植物具较高的分蘖(枝)死亡率和死物质率.茵陈蒿对各时期施尿均反应敏感,胡枝子和长芒草对生殖期施尿更敏感.尿斑处禾草枯黄期延迟,返青期提前.  相似文献

MSG (4 mg/g BW) or the equivalent molar ratio of NaCl were injected subcutaneously into chicks from four populations of chickens derived from a double selection experiment [(1) low exponential growth rate (EGR) to 14 days of age (14L), (2) high EGR to 14 days of age (14H), (3) low EGR to 42 days of age (42L) and high EGR to 42 days of age (42H)]. MSG significantly influenced growth in chickens, but the absolute effect was genotype and sex dependent. Weights of abdominal fat pads were ranked among lines according to the sequence 42H, 14H, 42L and 14L. MSG significantly increased fat pad size by 51%, independent of genotype or sex. MSG significantly decreased breast weight in females and males by 7%. The higher percent fat pads and lower breast weights associated with MSG are indicative of growth due to fat accretion rather than protein deposition.  相似文献

Living third- and fourth-stage larvae (L3 and L4) of Acanthocheilonema viteae were recovered quantitatively from adult Meriones unguiculatus within the first 10 days after subcutaneous inoculation of 60 arthropod-derived larvae (mL3). The average recovery of the inoculated larvae was about one third (28.5%), and the majority (87.7%) were found in muscular tissues. Seventy-two hours after inoculation, larvae could be isolated from all body locations, although the majority still was found near the site of inoculation. Morphological and biometrical data indicated that, at least until molting, the development of the larval population was not synchronous, with molting occurring over a period of 48 hr on days 7 and 8 postinoculation. The stomatal rings of postinvasive L3's and L4's were distinguishable structurally and could be used as stage-specific determinants. Immediately after infection, L3's showed a linear growth in diameter; rapid longitudinal growth started after the molt, leading to a doubling in the length of L4's within 4 days. The time course of shedding was reconstructed in detail using isolated L3/L4 intermediates.  相似文献

The effect of population density on reproduction as well as the oviposition modes of two sympatric dung beetle species, Aphodius haroldianus (a low fecundity/high parental effort species) and A. elegans (a high fecundity/low parental effort species) was studied at a pasture in central Japan from 1982 to 1986.
  1. The adult population density of A. haroldianus was high (>40 per dung pat). The density of A. elegans was low (<5 per dung pat). Oviposition of A. haroldianus was suppressed above the density of about 10 adults of conspecifics but not affected by the density of other species. The intra- and interspecific density effects on oviposition were not detected in A. elegans.
  2. The number of A. haroldianus adults per pat decreased with dung age, while that of A. elegans increased until sixth day after deposition and then decreased. The number of eggs laid per pat was not different between 1-day-and 3-day-old pats for A. haroldianus. However, more eggs of A. elegans were found in 3-day-old pats than in 1-day-old ones.
  3. In the both species, the amplitude of population fluctuations was not remarkable; the maximum/minimum ratio for five years being 2.3 for A. haroldianus and 2.9 for A. elegans. Different density dependent processes were suggested to function for the small fluctuation of population density between the two species, i.e. intraspecific density effect on oviposition for A. haroldianus and contest type competition for food among larvae of A. elegans.

The aim of this study was to compare the antagonistic properties of Lactobacillus casei GG exerted in vitro against Salmonella typhimurium C5 in a cellular model, cultured enterocyte-like Caco-2 cells, to those exerted in vivo in an animal model, C3H/He/Oujco mice. Our results show that a 1-h contact between the invading strain C5 and either the culture or the supernatant of L. casei GG impeded the invasion by the Salmonella strain in Caco-2 cells, without modifying the viability of the strain. After neutralization at pH 7, no inhibition of the invasion by C5 was observed. The antagonistic activity of L. casei GG was examined in C3H/He/Oujco mice orally infected with C5 as follows: (i) L. casei GG was given daily to conventional animals as a probiotic, and (ii) it was given once to germ-free animals in order to study the effect of the population of L. casei GG established in the different segments of the gut. In vivo experiments show that after a single challenge with C5, this strain survives and persists at a higher level in the feces of the untreated conventional mice than in those of the treated group. In L. casei GG germ-free mice, establishment of L. casei GG in the gut significantly delayed the occurrence of 100% mortality of the animals (15 days after C5 challenge versus 9 days in germ-free mice [P < 0.01]). Cecal colonization level and translocation rate of C5 to the mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, and liver were significantly reduced during the first 2 days post-C5 challenge, although the L. casei GG population level in the gut dramatically decreased in these animals.  相似文献

Deterministic models assessed the effects that contaminated dung from insecticide-treated cattle had on populations of three hypothetical species of dung fauna that dispersed randomly and could double their numbers every 1-28 weeks at low density. Insecticide was allowed to kill 2-98 % of adults and prevent 16-100% of breeding in pats produced immediately after cattle treatment, with toxicity declining to < 1% in pats produced 2-23 days later. Treatment intervals were 10-40 days. The modelled impact of insecticide was affected little by approximately four-fold variations in: length and density dependence of the attractive life span of pats, frequency of pat occupation by immature adults, distribution of pat toxicity during treatment interval, and changes in dispersal rates due to age and population density. Of greater importance were variations in: pat toxicity, treatment interval, frequency of pat occupation by breeding adults, density dependence of recruitment and death, natural adversity and mortality in dormancy, general rate of dispersal, and the size and shape of the area with treated cattle. Overall, it seemed that wide variations in the impact of contamination will occur in the field, but in many situations the risk to dung fauna can be substantial, especially for slow breeding beetles, and muscoids contacting insecticide on cattle. Risk extends outside the treated areas, for a distance equal to several daily displacements of the insects. Untreated refuges for species survival should be compact blocks at least 25 daily displacements wide.  相似文献

1. The Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia L.) has a small population (Ne ~ 100) on the small island of Pikku Tytärsaari (PT) in the Gulf of Finland. The population has remained completely isolated for ~100 generations, which has resulted in greatly reduced genetic variation and high genetic load (low fitness). In particular, females lay small egg clutches with a low egg‐hatching rate in comparison with a large reference population in the Åland Islands (ÅL). 2. In the present study, to what extent egg clutch size and egg‐hatching rate are influenced by male population and spermatophore size was analysed. 3. Spermatophore size increases with male body size, is smaller after the first mating, and is smaller in the small PT population. In the ÅL population but not in the PT population, the egg‐hatching rate increases with spermatophore size. The egg‐hatching rate of PT females is higher when mated with ÅL males than when mated with PT males (heterosis), but there is no such effect on clutch size. The clutch size of ÅL females is, however, reduced when mated with PT males. 4. These results indicate that both male and female traits contribute to reduced reproductive fitness in the small isolated population.  相似文献

Skin biopsies from larvae of Rattus norvegicus, experimentally infested with Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus Jr) (Diptera: Cuterebridae), were processed for histopathological studies. Two days after infestation, the first-stage larvae (L1) were located deep in the dermis, surrounded by an inflamed area infiltrated predominantly by neutrophils. On the fourth day a thin necrotic layer could be seen close to the larvae, surrounded by large numbers of neutrophils, lymphocytes, macrophages with a few eosinophils and mast cells. A small warble was formed after the fourth day, increasing in size until the seventh day, when the L1 moulted to the second-stage larva (L2). The inflammatory process continued with increasing numbers of neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes, eosinophils and mast cells invading the area, as well as the proliferation of fibroblasts and endothelial cells and the appearance of a few localized haemorrhages. After 18-20 days, the L2 moulted to the third-stage larva (L3), when a few plasma cells could be seen in the inflamed area. At 25-30 days there was a reduction in the necrotic layer, as well as in the number of neutrophils and lymphocytes, although large amounts of eosinophils, plasma cells, and collagen fibres were seen. The L3 usually left the host after 30 days. Two days later, the larval cavity was reduced, mast cells infiltrated the region and collagen fibre production were increased. After 7 days, an intense infiltration of plasma cells and scattered necrotic areas could be seen. A scar formed after 10 days. This study showed the laboratory rat to be a suitable model for studies of D. hominis infestation.  相似文献

An example of density-dependent regulation is provided by a long-term investigation (1966-present) of a population of migratory trout (estuarine and sea trout), Salmo trutta L., in a Lake District stream. Evidence for the concept of a critical period for the survival of young fish is briefly reviewed and found to be rather equivocal. The concept is, however, relevant to the trout population. Loss rates were high before but low after a critical survival time ( tc days after fry emergence) that varied between year-classes (range 33-70 days) and was inversely density-dependent on egg density. Survivor density and loss rates were strongly density-dependent on egg density before t c, but proportionate survival with stable loss-rates occurred after t c. Some trout established feeding territories soon after emergence and the number of fish without territories decreased from a high initial value to a negligible value at t c. Fish size at tc was not constant but increased as t c increased. The range of t c for the different year-classes was similar to that for survival times of unfed fry in the laboratory. A new stock-recruitment model, incorporating t c, has been developed for the trout population and shown to be related to the model (Ricker curve) used in the long-term study. The critical time can also be regarded as the critical age for survival in young trout; this concept may be relevant to other fish species.  相似文献

Pulmonary interstitial fibrosis (PIF), associated with persistent inflammation and increased collagen deposition in the interstitium, is often considered an autoimmune disease. Hapten immune PIF (HIPIF), a model for PIF, is elicited in the lung by a single intratracheal (i.t.) challenge in mice sensitized with hapten (2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid, TNBS). In this study, we characterized the role of CD40/CD40 ligand (CD40L) interactions in the elicitation of secondary cell-mediated immune responses that lead to development of fibrosis in the lung using an adoptive transfer model of HIPIF. The expression of CD40 was detected on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells 1-3 days after i.t. challenge with hapten in the HIPIF lung, but not lungs from the control mice. The CD40(bright) BAL cells morphologically resembled infiltrating monocytes. Furthermore, blocking CD40/CD40L interactions with blocking Ab decreased BAL production of Th1-mediators (IL-12 and TNF-alpha). Moreover, either blocking CD40/CD40L interactions with the Ab or using IL-12 knockout recipient mice prevented the increased collagen deposition (accumulation of hydroxyproline) in the lungs during HIPIF induction. We conclude that second signals (CD40/CD40L interactions) are required for elicitation of secondary immune responses that lead to PIF in vivo. The results support the notion that CD40/CD40L interactions are involved in the pathogenesis of an ongoing autoimmune disease.  相似文献

【目的】测定麦长管蚜Sitobion avenae Fabricius对E-β-法尼烯(E-β-farnesene,EβF)矿物油溶液反应的最低阈值浓度,为EβF的田间应用提供依据。【方法】观察麦长管蚜3龄若蚜对不同浓度EβF的逃逸行为和"Y"型管嗅觉行为反应。每天定时分5次(9:00,11:30,14:00,16:30和19:00)滴加10μL EβF于滤纸上,滤纸用牙签固定于麦苗盆中心,持续处理5 d。每盆麦苗处理前接1龄若蚜15头。记录成蚜翅型及2周后蚜虫总数量。【结果】随着EβF浓度升高,麦长管蚜3龄若蚜3 min内逃离数显著增加,有翅蚜比例显著增加,种群个体数量显著下降,驱避效果明显增强。EβF浓度为200 ng/μL和≥600 ng/μL使蚜虫逃离数显著增加(P0.05)。"Y"型管选择行为测试结果表明,EβF≥600 ng/μL对3龄若蚜具有极显著的驱避作用(P0.01)。与对照相比,EβF≥600 ng/μL处理极显著提高了有翅蚜比例(P0.01);EβF≥400 ng/μL极显著抑制蚜虫种群个体数量增长(P0.01),但与600 ng/μL处理差异不显著。【结论】600 ng/μL EβF矿物油溶液为麦长管蚜驱避剂的最低阈值浓度。  相似文献

Abstract. Cohorts of adult female Lucilia cuprina Wiedemann (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were fed a single 5 μl droplet of liver exudate after which half the females were allowed to mate and the other half left as virgins. Females were housed individually with water and sucrose for between 4 and 7 days after mating. Females were dissected to record the level of ovarian development and the size of their primary oocytes. Mating did not give protein-limited females any significant nutritional benefit in terms of either increased oocyte development, yolk deposition or oocyte size. Hence, it is concluded that male L.cuprina do not provide females at mating with any obvious material benefits beyond their sperm.  相似文献

The collembolan Proisotoma minuta (Tullberg) was successfully maintained in a laboratory culture that could be used to produce large numbers of P. minuta of standard size and physiological condition. The general life history of P. minuta was studied using a substrate comprising a mixture of plaster of Paris and charcoal with baker's yeast as food. The mean time taken for eggs to hatch following oviposition was 10.6 ± 1.3 days at 17.5°C and 6 ± 0.5 days at 23°C. Conditions in the culture were very important for the production of large insect populations. Growth of the cultures was limited by the increasing population size and was probably affected by contamination of the habitat by the deposition of excretory materials. Proisotoma minuta from a population that had ceased egg production started oviposition after individuals were transferred to a fresh plaster of Paris and charcoal habitat.  相似文献

Effects of temperature and rainfall timing, amount, and duration on the spread of Tomato spotted wilt virus (Bunyaviridae: genus Tospovirus ; TSWV) and population growth of its primary vector, Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), within patches of common chickweed, Stellaria media (L.) Cyrillo (Caryophyllaceae), were examined during the spring of 2004, 2005, and 2006. Elevated temperature treatments were investigated in an attempt to alter the age structure of F. fusca populations and change the effect of precipitation, but an average increase in daily temperature of 1 °C did not increase population size until late spring. Populations of immature F. fusca were immediately and negatively influenced by large amounts of rainfall or by rainfall distributed over three or more consecutive days during late April and early May. However, when precipitation was distributed over 1–3 days during early May, it also delayed senescence of the chickweed and ultimately resulted in a larger F. fusca population late in the season. The majority of TSWV spread within patches of chickweed occurred after mid-April. The fewest TSWV-infected chickweed plants occurred in plots that received high levels of precipitation during April or throughout spring and the amount of spread was directly related to the size of the immature F. fusca population that developed in each plot.  相似文献

Inhaled particle deposition sites must be identified to effectively treat human airway diseases. We have determined distribution patterns of a selected aeroallergen, mulberry pollen, among human extrathoracic (ET: i.e., oronasopharyngeal) regions and the lung. A predictive model validated by inhalation exposure data from human subjects was utilized. Deposition locations were primarily functions of (1) mulberry particle parameters (geometric size, 11–18 μm; shape, spherical; and density, 1.14 g cm?3), and (2) mode of breathing. In the general population, two styles of inhalation are prevalent, normal augmentors (NAs) and mouth breathers (MBs). Their clinical definitions are based on intra-ET airflow divisions. For a NA-mode breathing sedentary (minute ventilation = VE = 10 L min?1) adult, 93% of inhaled mulberry pollen was removed by the ET compartment and 7% collected within the lung. For a MB, the respective deposition efficiencies were 75% and 25%. To apply the model, we used a daily springtime mulberry pollen concentration of 1748 grains m?3 and an exposure time of 0.5 hour to calculate actual doses for the respiratory system. Under the stipulated conditions, a MB would inhale 524 pollen grains per day and 131 would be deposited in the lung; the value is 37 grains for a NA. Preliminary epidemiological results suggest 15% of the study population are MBs in whom such pollen deposits are likely contributors to airway disease.  相似文献

Activation of NKT cells using the glycolipid alpha-galactosylceramide (alpha-GalCer) has availed many investigations into their immunoregulatory and therapeutic potential. However, it remains unclear how they respond to stimulation in vivo, which costimulatory pathways are important, and what factors (e.g., Ag availability and activation-induced cell death) limit their response. We have explored these questions in the context of an in vivo model of NKT cell dynamics spanning activation, population expansion, and subsequent contraction. Neither the B7/CD28 nor the CD40/CD40L costimulatory pathway was necessary for cytokine production by activated NKT cells, either early (2 h) or late (3 days) after initial stimulation, but both pathways were necessary for normal proliferative expansion of NKT cells in vivo. The proapoptotic Bcl-2 family member Bim was necessary for normal contraction of the NKT cell population between days 3-9 after stimulation, suggesting that the pool size is regulated by apoptotic death, similar to that of conventional T cells. Ag availability was not the limiting factor for NKT cell expansion in vivo, and a second alpha-GalCer injection induced a very blunted response, whereby cytokine production was reduced and further expansion did not occur. This appeared to be a form of anergy that was intrinsic to NKT cells and was not associated with inhibitory NK receptor signaling. Furthermore, NKT cells from mice pre-challenged with alpha-GalCer in vivo showed little cytokine production and reduced proliferation in vitro. In summary, this study significantly enhances our understanding of how NKT cells respond to primary and secondary antigenic challenge in vivo.  相似文献
