Electroantennogram responses of adult American cockroaches were recorded from the sex pheromone mimic, germacrene D, and its related analogs. Germacrene D stimulated male antennae much greater than females, whereas other compounds produced significant responses of similar intensity with both male and female antennae. In the biological assay, only germacrene D induced the typical sexual behavior of males. The bioassay results imply that the conjugated system and isopropyl group of germacrene D are necessary chemical moieties for the sexual response in male cockroaches.  相似文献

Chemicals present in urine are thought to play an important role in mate identification in the solitary giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). During the breeding season, females will deposit chemical signals to advertise sexual receptivity to potential mates. The goal of this study was to determine if specific volatile compounds found in female urine could be considered as pheromones that elicit behavioral and physiological responses in males. Experimental simultaneous choice trials were conducted with captive male giant pandas (n = 3) housed at Memphis Zoo, San Diego Zoo, and Zoo Atlanta. Octanoic acid, 1H-pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde, decanoic acid, and civetone were selected as stimuli because previous studies reported their elevation in urine during the breeding season. Male interest was determined by a behavioral preference toward these volatile compounds diluted in synthetic urine compared with nontreated synthetic urine. Male urine samples were collected 1 week prior, during, and 1 week after the experimental period to assess changes in urinary semiochemical composition and urinary androgen concentrations. No significant differences in investigation response (p = .395) or flehmen response (p = .600) were found when stimuli were compared; however, decanoic acid and civetone elicited a behavioral preference over the control (response ratio > 0.5). The relative abundance of 16 compounds identified in male urine was significantly elevated (p < .05) above baseline values after the males were exposed to the stimuli. Androgen levels were significantly elevated (p < .05) in one male after exposure to 1H-pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde, decanoic acid, and civetone. These data suggested that civetone and decanoic acid in female urine may motivate sexual responses in males.  相似文献

The agave weevil, Scyphophorus acupunctatus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is the most important insect pest of wild and cultivated agaves in the world. Combined gas chromatography‐electroantennography (GC‐EAD) analysis of male volatile extracts showed that four peaks elicited antennal responses from males and females. The peaks were identified by GC‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) as 2‐methyl‐4‐heptanol (1), 2‐methyl‐4‐octanol (2), 2‐methyl‐4‐heptanone (3), and 2‐methyl‐4‐octanone (4). Electroantennogram (EAG) recordings of both sexes to 0.01‐, 0.1‐, 1‐, and 10‐µg stimulus load of synthetic compounds showed that the dose of the tested compounds and weevil sex significantly influenced the antennal response of S. acupunctatus. However, there was no sexual dimorphism in the antennal responses to the four synthetic compounds evaluated because the EAG profiles revealed no interaction between doses by sex. Antennae of S. acupunctatus were most sensitive to compounds 2 and 4, reaching the threshold at a 0.01‐µg stimulus load. Weevil antennae were less sensitive to compounds 1 and 3, and the threshold response to these compounds was 0.1 µg. Behavioural evaluation of the synthetic compounds showed them to be attractive to both males and females in a Y‐tube olfactometer. Field experiments confirmed the laboratory results, showing that all components, singly or in blends, were attractive to the weevils. In general, traps baited with the quaternary blend of compounds 1–4 captured significantly more weevils than traps baited with males. However, compounds 3 and 4 were sufficient to obtain captures equivalent to those by the quaternary blend. The potential use of the aggregation pheromone in the development of a mass‐trapping programme as a viable pest management alternative for S. acupunctatus is discussed.  相似文献

Relatively little is known about the mechanisms of communication during the non-breeding season in species that are seasonal breeders. Previous work with meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, housed under long photoperiods, has shown that they prefer the odors of opposite-sex conspecifics. In this paper, we investigated the effects of short photoperiod on preferences for sex-specific odors and the production of such odors. Short-photoperiod females preferred anogenital and fecal scents of other short-photoperiod females over those of males, but did not show sexual preferences for three other scents. Short-photoperiod males did not exhibit sexual preferences for any of the odors. Furthermore, scents from short-photoperiod voles did not elicit sex-specific preferences in long-photoperiod voles, and scents from long-photoperiod voles did not elicit preferences from short-photoperiod voles. These and previous results indicate that both the odors and responses to odors change seasonally and that long-photoperiod voles respond selectively to scents from long-photoperiod voles and short-photoperiod voles respond selectively to scents from short-photoperiod voles. Taken together, these results suggest the co-evolution of seasonal changes in scents and in perceptual or other response mechanisms.  相似文献

Winged (alate) virginoparae were induced in the laboratory by crowding the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) under long-day conditions. Males and gynoparae (the winged female form that produces sexual females) were induced by short days. Electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioural responses were investigated in each of the three forms to two aphid sex pheromone components, (-)-(4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol and (+)-(4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone, and benzaldehyde, a volatile which is released by the winter host plant. All three compounds elicited EAG responses with the males showing the highest sensitivity to each compound. Both the nepetalactol and the nepetalactone elicited larger EAG responses in gynoparae than in the winged virginoparae but antennae from virginoparae were more responsive to benzaldehyde. Although the nepetalactone is not a sex pheromone component in R. padi the EAG responses were similar to those evoked by the nepetalactol, the sex pheromone, in all three aphid forms. In a linear-track olfactometer, significantly more male R. padi moved into air containing nepetalactol, nepetalactone or benzaldehyde than into a simultaneous choice of clean air (i.e. attraction) but nepetalactol was more attractive than nepetalactone. Males, however, showed no response to a mixture of nepetalactol and nepetalactone. Gynoparae were attracted only to the nepetalactol but were less sensitive than the males and showed no response to the nepetalactone or benzaldehyde. In contrast, alate virginoparae showed no behavioural responses to any of the compounds. The present study supports the idea that the male R. padi utilise both sex pheromone and benzaldehyde for mate/host-plant location in autumn. It also demonstrates, for the first time, polyphenic differences in the olfactory responses at the peripheral level between the two female forms. Such differences impact on the life-cycle strategy where winged virginoparae move between graminaceous summer host plants while gynoparae move from the summer hosts to the bird cherry, winter host. The latter move appears to be assisted by the sex pheromone released by sexual females, already present on that host, acting as an aggregation pheromone.  相似文献

We conducted an experiment using the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) to test predictions associated with the proposed functions of scent marking as a sexual attractant, in reproductive competition, and as a self-advertisement. We allowed an oestrous female, an anoestrous female, and an adult male to scent mark three portions of a clean substrate and then exposed a second male to this substrate for secondary marking. We did not support a sexual attraction hypothesis in that males did not place more scent marks in response to oestrous than anoestrous females. Similarly, we did not support a reproductive competition hypothesis in that males did not place more scent marks in response to marks of males than to those of females or bare substrate. Males did not overmark the scent of males or females and thus we did not support a scent-masking or scent-blending hypothesis. In that males deposited scent similarly in response to males, females, and on bare substrate, our results suggest that the frequency and placement of scent marks by males function primarily to advertise individual identity in an area.  相似文献

Abstract.  Male stink bugs, Euschistus heros , only produce the three-component sex pheromone blend consisting of methyl-(2 E ,4 Z )-decadienoate, methyl-2,4,6-trimethyldodecanoate and methyl-2,4,6-trimethyltridecanoate in a constant ratio of 53 : 3 : 44, respectively, when provided with a food source (green beans, Phaseolus vulgaris ). When volatiles are collected from insects with drinking water, humidified air, or under dry conditions, the insects stop producing two components (methyl-2,4,6-trimethyldodecanoate and methyl-2,4,6-trimethyltridecanoate) after 1 day and increase the amount of defensive compounds produced [e.g. ( E )-2-hexenal, decane]. Methyl-2,4,6-trimethyltridecanoate is able to change the behaviour of females but not males. Dual-choice olfactometer bioassays with synthetic standards of all three components, as well as the ternary mixture in the correct ratio, induce a response from females but not males, indicating that all three components have a role in sexual communication. Thus, the dietary conditions under which volatile collections are carried out are crucial for determination of the precise sex pheromone blend.  相似文献

Male moths use sex pheromones to find their mating partners. In the moth, Agrotis ipsilon, the behavioral response and the neuron sensitivity within the primary olfactory centre, the antennal lobe (AL), to sex pheromone increase with age and juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis. By manipulating the JH level, we previously showed that JH controls this age-dependent neuronal plasticity, and that its effects are slow (within 2 days). We hypothesized that the hormonal effect might be indirect, and one neuromodulator candidate, which might serve as a mediator, is octopamine (OA). Here, we studied the effects of OA and an OA receptor antagonist, mianserin, on behavioral and AL neuron responses of mature and immature males during stimulation with sex pheromone. Our results indicate that, although OA injections enhanced the behavioral pheromone response in mature males, OA had no significant effect on behavior in immature males. However, mianserin injections decreased the behavioral response in mature males. AL neuron sensitivity increased after OA treatment in immature males, and decreased after mianserin treatment in mature males. Determination of OA levels in ALs of immature and mature males did not reveal any difference. To study the possible interactive effects of JH and OA, the behavioral pheromone response was analyzed in JH-deprived mature males injected with OA, and in immature males injected with fenoxycarb, a JH agonist, and mianserin. Results show that both JH and OA are necessary to elicit a behavioral response of A. ipsilon males to sex pheromone.  相似文献

Sexually competent females of Telmessus cheiragonus (helmet crab) release two pheromones that elicit grasping and copulation behaviors in males (Kamio et al., 2000, 2002, 2003). Our study aimed to use behavioral and electrophysiological techniques to identify the site of reception of these sex pheromones. In behavioral experiments, either the inner or the outer flagella of the antennules were ablated bilaterally from male crabs, and responses of male crabs to female odor were examined. When the inner flagella were surgically ablated, the sexual response (i.e., grasping and copulation behavior) of male crabs was not significantly changed relative to control animals that had their second antennae ablated. In contrast, the sexual response was significantly reduced when the outer flagella of the antennules were ablated, suggesting that the outer flagellum is the receptor organ that detects the sex pheromones. In electrophysiological experiments, urine, which in females contains the pheromone that elicits grasping behavior by males but does not contain the pheromone eliciting copulation, whose release site is not known, was tested. Female and male urine as well as shrimp extract evoked phasic responses of chemosensory afferents innervating aesthetasc sensilla on the outer flagellum of male crabs. The response of the afferents had significantly higher magnitude and lower threshold when female urine was applied. Thus, behavioral and electrophysiological observations suggest that in male helmet crabs, the outer flagellum of the antennule is the chemosensory organ that detects female sex pheromone.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The venoms of Polistes fuscatus (subspecies fuscatus) (F.) and P. exclamans Viereck from sympatric populations in North Carolina, U.S.A., contain a pheromone which attracts males and stimulates sexual behaviour in both conspecific and heterospecific males. Males of P. fuscatus (subspecies variatus Cresson), a subspecies from Wisconsin, respond to venom of P. fuscatus fuscatus, P. exclamans, and Vespula maculifrons (Buysson) from North Carolina, although the levels of response to P. exclamans and V. maculifrons venom are less than that to P. fuscatus variatus venom.
Caged Wisconsin P. fuscafus males do not attempt to mate with P. exclamans females, but will attempt to mate with conspecifics. A series of bioassays indicates that males discriminate between females of P. fuscatus and P. exclamans on the basis of chemical, rather than behavioural or visual cues. The venom apparently is not important in species recognition. Instead, the results of two sets of bioassays suggest that species recognition is mediated by a surface pheromone on the cuticle of females.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The upwind flight response of individual male lightbrown apple moths, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker), to twenty combinations of the two pheromone components, (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc) and (E,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate (E,E-9,11–14:OAc), was observed in a sustained-flight tunnel. At the lowest dosage of E11-14:OAc tested (3 μg), a significantly greater percentage of males flew upwind to and landed at a source emitting 10% E1,E-9, 11–14:OAc than to all other sources. As the source dosage was increased, males showed decreased specificity of upwind flight to ratios of the two components. However, at the highest dosage of E11-14:OAc tested (300 μg), the response specificity of males shifted to blends containing lower percentages of E,E-9,11–14:OAc. The addition of tetradecyl acetate to a blend of the two components did not result in any detectable increase in male response. Analyses of the pheromone glands of individual female Iightbrown apple moths showed that females produced a range of ratios of E11-14;OAc:E,E-9,11–14:OAc from 100:2.2 to 100:11.4 with a median of approximately 100:7, reasonably paralleling the peak response of males. Pre-exposure of males to a blend of the two components, followed by exposure to E11-14:OAc alone (previously reported as a 'memory' effect) resulted in no significant response to E11-14:OAc alone.  相似文献

Six compounds were identified from gland extracts of the cotton bollworm, Heliothis armigera(Hubner): (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald), (Z)-9-hexa-decenal (Z9-16:Ald), hexadecanal, (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Z11-16:OH), (Z)-7-hexadecenal (Z7-16:Ald), and (Z)-9-tetradecenal (Z9-14:Ald). Each of the compounds that were identified was examined for its ability to elicit sexual responses from male moths in a flight tunnel. Males flew upwind to Z11-16:Ald alone, but greater levels of copulatory responses were evoked with the addition of 2.5% Z9-16:Ald to the Z11-16:Ald. Addition of hexadecanal to the binary mixture had no effect in raising the behavioral response of the males in the flight tunnel. The effect of Z7-16:Ald on male flight depended on the loading. The addition of 1% of this component to 2 mg of the binary mixture reduced levels of copulatory response, but the same addition (1 %) to 10 g of the binary mixture increased copulatory response. The addition of 79-14:Ald or Z11-16:OH to the binary mixture reduced behavioral responses of males. High loadings of the binary mixture (200–2000 g) were better than a low loading (10 g) in eliciting response of males.Contribution from the Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Bet Dagan, Israel. The role of olfaction and vision in the close-ranging flying and walking orientation of male gypsy moths, Lymantria dispar(L.), to females was studied in the forest and in the laboratory. In the forest, feral males found an isolated pheromone source as readily as one supplemented with female visual cues; dead, acetonerinsed females deployed without pheromone received virtually no visitations. In flight tunnel choice experiments using cylinders as surrogate trees and pheromone in different spatial configurations, visual attributes of the female did not influence either the males' choice of landing site or the efficiency with which they located the female. Rather, the presence of pheromone on the cylinder was necessary to elicit orientation as well as landing and walking on the cylinder. When a female visual model was placed in various positions around a pheromone source, walking males oriented primarily to the chemical stimulus. There were, however, indications that males would alter their walking paths in response to female visual cues over short distances (<5 cm), but only if they continued to receive pheromone stimulation. When visual and chemical cues were abruptly uncoupled by altering the trajectory of the pheromone plume, most males responded to the loss of the odor cue rather than to visual cues from the female. Temporal pheromone stimulation patterns affected male walking orientation. When stimulated by pheromone, males oriented toward the source; loss of the odor cue prompted an arearestricted local search characterized by primarily vertical and oblique movements with frequent reversals in direction. Presumably these maneuvers enhance the likelihood of recontacting the plume or serendipitously encountering the female. The apparent lack of visual response to the female is discussed in light of morphological and behavioral evidence suggesting that gypsy moths were formerly nocturnal.  相似文献

In behavioural experiments we investigated the influence of previous short exposure to sex pheromone on subsequent response of male Spodoptera littoralis moths to sex pheromone. We found that pre-exposed males showed increased sensitivity to female sex pheromone after a single exposure to a pheromone plume compared to that found in na?ve males. The increased responsiveness lasted for at least 27 h after the exposure, showing that it was not just a short-term sensitization of the males. Exposure to the odour source without upwind movement towards the source was enough to increase the responsiveness. Physical activation without exposure to odour did not affect responsiveness. The increase in responsiveness after exposure was higher when the males were pre-exposed to natural female pheromone gland extract than when they were exposed to a higher dose of the main component, even though both odour sources elicited similar upwind attraction in na?ve males. Thus, the quality of the pheromone mixture to which males were exposed influenced the subsequent response.  相似文献

Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play important roles in mate recognition and chemical communication. To explore the cues regulating courtship and mating behaviour in the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), CHCs were extracted from mature virgin female and male oriental fruit flies using n‐hexane. Nine compounds – i.e., 4‐allyl‐2,6‐dimethoxyphenol (designated ‘compound 3’) and eight ester compounds – had significantly greater abundance in female samples than in males. Of these nine compounds, six (1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8) elicited electrophysiological responses from the antennae of male flies. Compound 3 did not elicit a detectable male antennal response, but in Y‐tube olfactometer bioassays, it exhibited robust attractiveness to conspecific males at close range. We speculate that compound 3 is a close‐range sex pheromone in B. dorsalis. A mating competition experiment revealed that compound 3 significantly increased the competitiveness of males, which implied that compound 3 might be used in control programs of B. dorsalis.  相似文献

Sensory coding of pheromone signals in mammals   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
The vomeronasal organ (VNO) of mammals plays an essential role in the detection of pheromones, chemical cues secreted by animals that elicit genetically programmed sexual and aggressive behaviors among conspecifics. The recent characterization of genes encoding molecular components of the VNO sensory response suggests that VNO neurons express a unique set of molecules to recognize and translate pheromone signals into neuronal electrical activity. Identification of these genes, which include putative pheromone receptor genes, has offered a new opportunity to uncover basic principles of pheromone sensory processing and important aspects of vomeronasal development.  相似文献

A hexane-soluble contact mating stimulant pheromone, bioassayable by sexual response of tethered males, was extracted by prolonged (5-day) washing of whole, freshly-killed male and female Culicoides melleus. Assays were performed by allowing males to manipulate (with their feet) very small cubes of cork on which extract had been deposited by evaporation. Silica-gel chromatography of crude extract yielded total hydrocarbon fractions to which, when assayed at 10 ♀♀ (or ♂♂) equivalents. 75% or more of the males responded. The diluted total hydrocarbon fraction from females elicited significant male response at 1 ♀ equivalent, but not at 110 equivalent or less. Assays of synthetic n-alkanes showed no activity, but among several methyl-substituted alkanes (2-methyl-docosane, 8-methyl-docosane, 9-methyl-tricosane, 10-methyl-docosane), the first three produced significant response assayed at 1 μg per model.  相似文献

The behavioral responses of Hylamorpha elegans L. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae) to the semiochemicals released from conspecific individual adults were studied, with particular attention paid to female attraction of males. Odors released from virgin females significantly attracted male conspecifics in both the field and laboratory olfactometer and wind tunnel bioassays. However, females did not attract other females, and males attracted no one. The response of male H. elegans to (1) compounds (1,4-hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone) released only by unmated females; (2) the essential oil of the secondary host (Nothofagus obliqua); and (3) the blend of 1,4-hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone with N. obliqua essential oil was studied. The blend of 1,4-benzoquinone mixed with essential oil at the trial concentration was attractive with males. The same response was found with 1,4-hydroquinone alone. The essential oil did not have the expected attractant effect on conspecific males. These results suggest that, when combined with essential oil, 1,4-benzoquinone may function in the sexual behavior of males and females. These findings are discussed in terms of the ecological role of this putative sexual pheromone and its potential use in a strategy of control of this pest.  相似文献
