The effects of the host plant on the level of parasitism, development time and mortality ofEncarsia formosa Gahan parasitizing castor whitefly,Trialeurodes ricini Misra were studied. The level of parasitism varied significantly between host plants; ranging from an average high of 13/50T. ricini larvae parasitized per parasitoid per day on aubergine to an average low of 1.6/50 host larvae on potato. Development time ofE. formosa varied according to whitefly host plant; minimum average development time was 17.7 days on cotton. The mortality ofE. formosa was high on all host plants tested, and the type of host plant had no significant influence on mortality. Aubergine proved to be the most satisfactory laboratory plant for rearingE. formosa onT. ricini.  相似文献

The life cycle of the moth,Meskea horor Dyar and its host specificity toSida acuta andS. rhombifolia were investigated. Moths emerge early in the morning and are usually inactive during the day. Feeding by the adults in the field was not observed. However, those in the laboratory fed on flowers ofS. acuta, S. rhombifolia andHibiscus sabdariffa, and drank water or dilute honey solution. Eggs are mainly laid on the underside of leaves. Larvae ofM. horor form galls in the stems ofS. acuta andS. rhombifolia which retard plant growth and flowering. Pupation occurs within the gall. The development time from egg to adult was 192 days and the adults lived for 11 to 14 days. Forty-eight plant species were tested to determine the host range ofM. horor. Adults emerged from seven species of plants in the family Malvaceae and larvae formed galls but died before pupating on a further 17 species.M. horor is considered to have too broad a host range to be used as a biological control agent forS. acuta andS. rhombifolia.  相似文献

Recent anthropogenic fragmentation has led to population differentiation threatening viability of many species, including species specialized on mountainous ecosystems. Bombus ephippiatus, a widespread species mostly found in mountains in the Neotropics, seems to use the highlands as island, and deforested lowland areas may represent barriers to their dispersal, leading to isolation and potentially loss of genetic diversity. Yet, lack of knowledge of its population structure does not allow adequate management and conservation. To fill this knowledge gap, we assessed the population structure and inferred dispersion of B. ephippiatus in two mountain-ranges in Guatemala (Volcanic Chain and Sierra de las Minas). This region is characterized by high topographic variation and considerable deforestation strain. We analyzed the effects of elevation and land-use on genetic differentiation of B. ephippiatus populations and inferred its demography in the region. Our results suggest that B. ephippiatus is able to disperse long distances across most landscape types, reflected by its high genetic diversity, high effective population size, considerable gene flow, low population differentiation, as well as the lack of isolation by distance. Hence, B. ephippiatus may be a resilient species for the provision of pollination services. However, we detected a subtle divergence of B. ephippiatus into two clusters, of which Sierra de las Minas has been identified as a regional hotspot of genetic and species endemism. Yet, differentiation is very recent and hence likely caused by lowland deforestation. The combined effects of current forest cover and elevation partially explain the observed subtle patterns of differentiation suggesting that the maintenance of suitable habitat is crucial to ensure population connectivity of this keystone pollinator.  相似文献

Phytophagous insects of estuarine tidal marshes which live inside their host plants, are, in contrast to the plants, not directly exposed to the estuarine salinity gradient. Previous field studies, however, have shown that patterns of growth and development ofAgapanthia villosoviridescens larvae, stem-borers of the halophyteAster tripolium, gradually change on tidal marshes along the Westerschelde estuary (HEMMINGA and VAN SOELEN, 1988). In the present study we carried out a laboratory experiment in which we followed growth ofA. villosoviridescens larvae from two different Westerschelde tidal marshes; the larvae either were kept inA. tripolium stems from their own marsh, or they were kept in stems from the other marsh. It was found that larvae from both tidal marshes showed larger weight increases inA. tripolium stems from the least saline marsh. Apparently, differences in host plant quality between stems of the two marshes exist. The results lend support to the hypothesis that growth and development, and distribution and abundance of phytophagous insects in estuarine tidal marshes may be indirectly influenced by estuarine gradients,via the host plant quality which changes along the estuary.  相似文献

In an experiment, conducted under semi-field conditions, the influence ofT. potentillae on the development ofP. ulmi on apple trees under various regimes of N fertilization was studied. It was shown thatP. ulmi reacted to an increased N content of the host plant by an increased rate of reproduction;T. potentillae responded numerically to the increased density of its prey and preventedP. ulmi from reaching damaging levels. The number of missing immatures was greater on the N-low trees; possible causes for this phenomenon are discussed.  相似文献

Mexico and Central America are among the most biodiverse regions on Earth, harboring many species with high levels of interpopulation morphological and genetic diversity. The mountainous topography of this region contains isolated sky island habitats that have the potential to promote speciation. This has been studied in vertebrates, yet few studies have examined the phylogeographic and genetic structure of insect species encompassing this region. Here we investigate geographic patterns of genetic and morphological divergence and speciation among widespread populations of the highly polymorphic bumble bee Bombus ephippiatus and its closest relative B. wilmattae. We used DNA sequences from a fragment of cytochrome oxidase I (COI), genotypes for twelve microsatellite markers, and morphometric data from wings to construct a well-supported inference of the divergences among these taxa. We have found complex patterns of genetic isolation and morphological divergence within B. ephippiatus across its geographic range and present evidence that B. ephippiatus comprises multiple independent evolutionary lineages. The pattern of their diversification corresponds to geographic and environmental isolating mechanisms, including the Mexican highlands, the lowlands of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico, the Nicaraguan Depression, the patchily distributed volcanic ranges in Nuclear Central America and Pleistocene glacial cycles. These results have important implications for the development and distribution of B. ephippiatus as a commercial pollinator in Mexico and Central America.  相似文献

Aphthona chinchihi Chen was collected in China feeding on leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.). Studies were conducted on its host specificity in the laboratory, using field collected adults and their progeny.Aphthona chinchihi can effectively complement the impact of the other natural enemies of leafy spurge established from Europe in the U.S.A. and Canada. The adults feed on leaves and shoots and the larvae, which cause the main damage to the plant, feed on the hypogeous portion of the plant, seriously stressing the plant and preventing its vegetative spread. The host range ofA. chinchihi was studied with tests on adult feeding and oviposition, larval survival and host suitability, using 40 plant species or varieties distributed in 12 families. The experiments demonstrated that it has a high level of specificity. This flea beetle completed its life cycle only on leafy spurge. Also, because of its ecological valence,A. chinchihi has a very good potential as a biocontrol agent in North America.  相似文献

TwoApium graveolens var.rapaceum (L.) cultivars that differ in their suitability for the survival and growth ofSpodoptera exigua (Hübner) andTrichoplusia ni (Hübner) were used to examine the effect of genetic and seasonal environmental variation in host plant suitability on the efficacy ofBacillus thuringiensis subsp.kurstaki (Berliner). The effects of host plant genotype andB. thuringiensis were generally independent, so thatB. thuringiensis efficacy was greatest on the resistant host plant cultivar. Host plant suitability varied within growing season for both insect species but, while host plant suitability decreased with increasing plant age forT. ni, the response ofS. exigua to plant age was not as clear. Within season variation in host plant suitability affectedB. thuringiensis efficacy and the interaction betweenB. thuringiensis and host plant cultivar forS. exigua but not forT. ni. Soluble protein and Folin-Denis phenolic concentrations of host plant tissue were not correlated with changes in host plant suitability to either insect species.  相似文献

Larvae of Phengaris (Maculinea) butterflies are adopted by Myrmica workers and are obligate myrmecophiles. Brood recognition by Myrmica rubra workers was tested for concolonial larvae (M. rubra) versus allocolonial larvae (M. rubra and P. nausithous) to assay the mimetic efficiency of P. nausithous. In addition, we tested M. rubra ant colonies from different populations with and without the presence of Phengaris, to test for potential local adaptation in adoption behaviour. We show that M. rubra can distinguish between nest-mate and foreign larvae as well as between P. nausithous and their own larvae. Workers from the allopatric population inspected and rejected more P. nausithous larvae than workers from the sympatric population. This might reflect a local host adaptation in which the social parasite more efficiently mimes its sympatric host ants than allopatric ones.  相似文献

Plant-ants live in a mutualistic association with host plants known as “myrmecophytes” that provide them with a nesting place and sometimes with extra-floral nectar (EFN) and/or food bodies (FBs); the ants can also attend sap-sucking Hemiptera for their honeydew. In return, plant-ants, like most other arboreal ants, protect their host plants from defoliators. To satisfy their nitrogen requirements, however, some have optimized their ability to capture prey in the restricted environment represented by the crowns of trees by using elaborate hunting techniques. In this study, we investigated the predatory behavior of the ant Azteca andreae which is associated with the myrmecophyte Cecropia obtusa. We noted that up to 8350 ant workers per tree hide side-by-side beneath the leaf margins of their host plant with their mandibles open, waiting for insects to alight. The latter are immediately seized by their extremities, and then spread-eagled; nestmates are recruited to help stretch, carve up and transport prey. This group ambush hunting technique is particularly effective when the underside of the leaves is downy, as is the case for C. obtusa. In this case, the hook-shaped claws of the A. andreae workers and the velvet-like structure of the underside of the leaves combine to act like natural Velcro® that is reinforced by the group ambush strategy of the workers, allowing them to capture prey of up to 13,350 times the mean weight of a single worker.  相似文献

The study of various behavioural criteria of femaleDiadromus pulchellus parasitoids in the presence of theirAcrolepiopsis assectella hosts has shown the essentially chemical nature of the stimulant determining host recognition. The physical stimuli of the cocoon seem not to be implicated. Thus cocoons whose original texture has been completely altered, either mechanically or chemically, as well as the silk excreted by the host caterpillars significantly stimulates the female parasitoids. The cocoon contact kairomones are detected in testing the aqueous extracts ofA. assectella which provoke a positive behavioural response from the females in a threshold concentration of 1 cocoon-equivalent. The comparison of aqueous extracts ofA. assectella host cocoons, and of non-host species:Bombyx mori, Ephestia kuehniella andCacoecimorpha pronubana demonstrate the kairomone specificity of the silk, the extracts of non-host cocoons being ignored by the parasitoid, as were the silk threads left byE. kuehniella caterpillars. Finally the contact kairomones linked to the silk seem to be independent of the host plant and of the nutrient diet of the host caterpillars. The cocoons spun by the caterpillars reared on leeks or on artificial diets with or without powdered leek provoke similar responses in the parasitoids.  相似文献

The life history and behavior ofEuplectrus laphygmae Ferrière were studied. The parasites paralyse the host larvae temporarily before ovipositing 1–2 eggs on their dorsum. Egg and larval development takes place externally in the location of egg deposition and pupation is in a silken cocoon under the dead host. Development lasts 11.7 days for both sexes. The eggs are attached to the host with a pedicel that is inserted under the cuticle but above the hypodermis, and which may have physiological and mechanical functions. The adult parasites host-feed, but do not lay on the same host. All hosts stung by parasites die, regardless whether oviposition has occurred, or whether host larvae develop upon them. Multiparasitism with internal parasites ofSpodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) was observed. A comparison with otherEuplectrus species was made. They have a wide range of lepidopterous hosts but very similar biological characteristics. Only very few utilizations for biological control have been reported with this genus.  相似文献

The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is considered to be a major pest that damages tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L; Solanaceae) crops in South American, European, and Mediterranean countries. This insect species is polyphagous (i.e., feeds on many types of food); hence, it could also develop on other cultivated host plants, principally solanaceous plants, such as potato (S. tuberosum L.; Solanaceae) and eggplant (S. melongena L.; Solanaceae). Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that host plant choice by adult T. absoluta is influenced by plant volatile organic compounds and larval host plant experience. One tomato cultivar (cv.) ‘Moneymaker’ and three potato cv. ‘Charlotte’ ‘Bintje,’ and ‘Nicola’ were tested. Using a flying tunnel, we observed that females reared on tomato preferred flying toward tomato and, to a lesser extent, potato cv. ‘Charlotte.’ These preferences might be explained by the high release of terpenes by these two plants. When conducting oviposition choice assays, we found no preference between tomato and potato in the number of eggs laid by females that had been previously reared on either host plant. This study indicates that the host finding behavior of T. absoluta is mediated by solanaceous volatiles, while oviposition behavior appears to depend on additional stimuli. These results provide baseline information for use in the development of new control strategies against T. absoluta using semiochemicals and plant breeding.  相似文献

The bumblebee Bombus (Psithyrus) norvegicus Sp.-Schn. is an obligate social parasite of B. (Pyrobombus) hypnorum L. Behavioural observations indicated that nest-invading B. norvegicus females may use allomones to defend themselves against attacking host workers. However, so far no defensive chemicals used by social parasitic bumblebee females have been identified. We analysed volatile constituents of the cuticular lipid profile of B. norvegicus females. Furthermore, we performed electrophysiological studies and behavioural experiments in order to identify possible chemical weapons. Coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography showed 15 compounds to trigger responses in antennae of the host workers. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, the main compound among the cuticular volatiles of B. norvegicus females was found to be dodecyl acetate. A corresponding mixture of synthetic volatiles as well as pure dodecyl acetate showed a strong repellent effect on starved host workers. B. norvegicus females use dodecyl acetate to repel attacking B. hypnorum workers during nest usurpation and subsequently during colony development. Dodecyl acetate is the first repellent allomone identified in bumblebees.  相似文献

The host specificity ofCystiphora sonchi (Bremi), a promising biocontrol agent of the sow-thistles,Sonchus arvensis L.,S. oleraceus L., andS. asper (L.)Hill, was investigated. These are widespread, serious weeds in Canada and the United States. In the laboratory, 6 females produced up to 721 galls on 1 plant ofS. arvensis, and up to 245 galls on 1 leaf. A total of 59 plant species in 49 genera of the familyCompositae were tested.C. sonchi produced viable galls onSonchus species only, thus confirming European field records.C. sonchi was approved for release in Canada.  相似文献

Pure cultured isolates ofFrankia made from root nodules of plant species from among three genera of the host family Casuarinaceae were used in inoculation trials of seedlings grown in water culture. A large number of host species among the genera Allocasuarina, Casuarina and Gymnostoma from Australia, Papua New Guinea and other South Pacific Islands were tested. The most widely infectiveFrankia strains were CcI3 and AllI1; theFrankia strains with the narrowest host range within the Casuarinaceae were CcI2 and GpI1. Intrafamily cross-inoculations were uncommon. The most broadly receptive host species wasG. papuanum. The percentage parasitism ofSaissetia nigra (Nietner) by chalcidoid parasites and the relative abundance of individual parasites were studied in the field usingHibiscus rosa-sinensis L. as the host plant. In order of abundance (on the basis of percentage recorded) the primary parasites wereAnysis saissetiae Ash.,Aneristus ceroplastae How., andMicroterys newcombi (Gir)., while the hyperparasites wereMarietta exitiosa Comp.,Cheiloneurus saissetiae Noyes & Chua andEupelmus catoxanthae Ferr. The efficiency ofA. saissetiae (the larvae of which feed on the scale eggs) to control the scale population is doubtful because it is often parasitised by all 3 hyperparasites mentioned and each larva during development causes only 58% egg mortality of the parasitised host, leaving many scale eggs unconsumed.A. ceroplastae appears to be more useful parasite because it attacks the 2nd instar scales which cause significant damage to the host plant and it is free from attack by hyperparasites.  相似文献
