The use of artificial reefs in enhancing fish communities in Singapore   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Intense development of the coastal zone in Singapore has resulted in the degradation of much of the marine ecosystem. In order to restore and enhance fish communities of denuded areas, an artificial reef consisting of a tyre reef and a concrete reef, was established in the vicinity of the southern islands of Singapore. Results from fish visual censuses after the establishment of the artificial reef indicated an increase in numbers of juveniles and adults. A total of 37 and 32 fish species were recorded over a period of 1/2 years at the concrete and tyre reefs respectively. The dominant fish families were Pomacentridae, Labridae, Chaetodontidae, Apogonidae, Gobiidae and Nemipteridae. The artificial reefs also serve as a nursery ground for some species (e.g. Neopomacentrus sp.) which are important primary consumers of algae on natural reefs. Greater numbers of target (food-important) fishes were observed at the concrete reef while the tyre reef harboured more juveniles and smallersized adults. The results indicate that the concrete modules were more effective than the tyre reef in terms of fish abundance per unit volume. Such structures can enhance the biological resources of relatively unproductive areas.  相似文献

Although tropical coral reefs are one of the most spectrally complex habitats, there is relatively little known about colour vision of reef fish. In this study, we measured the spectral sensitivity of an endemic Hawaiian coral reef fish, Thalassoma duperrey (family Labridae), and assessed the possible role of visual sensitivity in mediating intraspecific communication. Electrophysiological recordings of compound action potentials from retinal ganglion cells were used to generate spectral sensitivity curves for specific wavelengths (380–620nm). We found at least 2 sensitivity peaks for the on response (max=460, 550nm). The off response lacked a short wavelength mechanism but a medium wavelength mechanism (max=545nm) and a longwave mechanism (max=570nm) were found. To quantify the visual stimulus provided by a conspecific individual, spectral reflectance from the colour pattern of T. duperrey was measured with a spectroradiometer. Luminance and spectral contrast were computed between colour patches of the pattern and between the patches and natural backgrounds (i.e., water and coral). Reflectance from the blue head and contrast from the blue, green and red patches matched the sensitivity maxima of T. duperrey, although this depended on the type of background. Our results indicate that T. duperrey should be able to visually detect the colour pattern of a conspecific fish and that T. duperrey's visual system is designed to enhance target detection in the coral reef habitat with matched and offset cone mechanisms.  相似文献

Doubled haploid (DH) progeny from a cross between the scald susceptible barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar Ingrid and the resistant accession CI 11549 (Nigrinudum) was evaluated for resistance in the pathogen Rhynchosporium secalis (Oudem) J.J. Davis. Two linked and incompletely dominant loci confer resistance CI 11549 against isolate 4004. One is an allele at the complex Rrs1 locus on chromosome 3H close to the centromere; the other is located 22 cM distally on the long arm. The latter locus is designated Rrs4. In BC3-lines into Ingrid from CI 2222 (another Nigrinudum) resistance seems governed by one locus close to the telomeric region of chromosome 7H, probably allelic to Rrs2. In neither case did we find any trace of the recessive gene rh8 reported to be present in Nigrinudum. Various resistance donors of Ethiopian origin designated as Nigrinudum, Jet or Abyssinian were identical to a great extent with respect to markers, but differed in resistance to different isolates of scald or in barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) resistance. The implications for their use as differentials in scald tests and screening of germplasm collections are discussed.  相似文献

Three species of the reef coral genus Madracis display skeletal isotopic characteristics that relate to depth, colony topography, and consequently to coral physiology. The joint interpretation of skeletal 13C and 18O provides information on the ecological plasticity and adaptation to depth of a coral species. Isotopic results are most easily understood in terms of kinetic effects, which reduce both 18O and 13C below isotopic equilibrium values, and metabolic effects, which only influence the skeletal 13C. Madracis mirabilis is adapted to depths shallower than 20 m, and shows the greatest range in kinetic effects and the strongest metabolic 13C enrichments caused by symbiont photosynthesis. Madracis formosa lives deeper than 40 m, and shows a reduced range of kinetic effects and relatively weak metabolic 13C enrichments. Madracis pharensis inhabits depths from 5 to >60 m, and does not attain the strength of kinetic effects of either of the other two species, apparently because it is not quite as well adapted to rapid growth at either extreme.  相似文献

In vitro culture of immature embryo and young leaf tissues was carried out with five cultivars of barley, Hordeum vulgare. Two cultivars (Albacete and Porthos) responded poorly from both types of explants, while the three others (Dissa, Golden Promise and Ingrid) produced a high frequency of embryogenic callus from these explants (25–60%). For Dissa and Ingrid, young leaf explants were slightly better than immature embryo explants for embryogenic callus induction, while immature embryo cultures of Golden Promise responded better than young leaf explants. Thus, there appears to be a significant genotype × explant interaction in the initiation of embryogenic callus in barley.Some phenotypic variants were detected among the regenerated plants of Golden Promise and Ingrid, most originating by epigenetic changes. Only in one case was the variant phenotype heritable, probably due to a mutation in the chloroplast DNA. Mitotic alteractions were not detected. Consequently, somaclonal variation did not appear to be a very frequent event in plants regenerated from 1- to 6- month-old cultures of barley.  相似文献

Synopsis The rim circling (RC), and aggressive habituation of nesting bluegills were studied in natural colonies during the six days of the reproductive period following spawning. To examine the stimulus specificity of aggressive habituation, selected test individuals and four neighbors were observed on four occasions during one day. After the first observation period established baseline data on aggressive interactions, the appearances of three of the neighbors were manipulated and further observations were made. Two more observation periods followed, separated by a sham manipulation to allow for possible disturbance effects. Fish lengths, inter-nest distances, and positions in the colony were also recorded.An analysis of the data demonstrated that aggressive interaction increased for the three manipulated neighbors. There were no significant differences among the data for the fourth (control) neighbors. The enhanced aggressive interactions between the test and manipulated males were initiated by the males at least partially in response to the changed appearance of the neighbor. Further, the level of aggressive interaction returned to normal after about 2 hours, indicating that the test male had habituated to the new appearances of his neighbors. Thus visual appearance plays an important role in the habituation of aggression between neighboring bluegills. It was not possible to determine if the behavior of the neighbor was also an important cue used in aggressive habituation, but this seems likely. Advantages of aggressive habituation are discussed. It is noteworthy that aggression decreased as internest distance increased.Levels of RC varied significantly over the six days, in a time course dissimilar from aggression. The RC rate is dependent on size of male, nest locality, and circling activity of neighbors. Observations on the synchrony of rim circling indicated social facilitation. It is argued that RC probably fulfills an advertisement function important in defending the brood. The motivation for RC is likely complex, and its performance reflects a mixed aggressive and reproductive strategy in the nesting population. Aggressive habituation functions in the social organization of bluegills to facilitate the occurrence of group displays such as RC.  相似文献

Most of the alloplasmic cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) systems are known to be associated with a number of floral abnormalities that result from nuclear-cytoplasmic incompatibilities. One such system, tour, which is derived from Brassica tournefortii, induces additional floral abnormalities and causes chlorosis in Brassica spp. While the restorer for this CMS has been reported to be present in B. napus, in B. juncea, where the abnormalities are more pronounced, no restorer has yet been identified. Rectification of these floral abnormalities through mitochondrial recombinations and chloroplast replacement might result in the improvement of this CMS system. As organelle recombinations can possibly be achieved only by somatic cell hybridization, fusion experiments were carried out between hygromycin-resistant B. juncea AABB carrying tour cytoplasm and phosphinotricin-resistant, normal B. oleracea CC to generate AABBCC hexaploid somatic hybrids. The presence of selectable marker genes facilitated the selection of hybrids in large numbers. The resulting hybrids showed wide variation in floral morphology and organelle composition. Regenerants with normal, male-sterile flowers having recombinant tour-or oleracea-type mitochondria and oleracea-type chloroplasts were obtained. Hybrids with male-fertile flowers were also obtained that had recombined tour mitochondria. The AABBCC hexaploid hybrids synthesized in the present study were successfully utilized as a bridging material for transferring variability in the organelle genome simultaneously to all the digenomic Brassica species, and all of these hybrids are now being stabilized through repeated backcrosses to the allopolyploid crop brassicas.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of the dwarf plant type was studied in blackgram (V. mungo (L.) Hepper). Type 9 has erect plant type with normal internode length. The mutant line, EMSD has reduced internode length. The F1, F2 and F3 generations of a cross between Type 9 and EMSD and its reciprocal were studied. Rhizopus is a zygomycetous genus. Several species of this taxon may infect humans and lower animals. Seventeen isolates ofRhizopus species in three distinct morphological groups were studied: the stolonifer group (sporangiophores greater than 1 mm in height, sporangial diameters of 100–275 µm, branched rhizoids); the arrhizus group (sporangiophores greater than 1 mm in height, branched rhizoids, sporangial diameters of 100–240 µm); and the microsporus group (sporangiophores less than 0.8 mm in height, sporangial diameters less than 100 µm, simple rhizoids). Maximal growth temperatures were characteristic: the stolonifer group grew at 30°C, the arrhizus group grew at 36°C, and the microsporus group grew at 45°C. The DNA mol% G + C base composition of all isolates ranged from 34.9 to 40.2% Species within the three groups were grouped by DNA differences. The arrhizus group was most distinctive with a value of 34.9–36.3%; the stolonifer and microsporus groups had G + C values of 37.0–39.3% and 37.8–40.2%, respectively. Our research clarifies and defines the G-C values of the three important groups ofRhizopus species.  相似文献

Male Schizocosa ocreata wolf spiders court females with synchronous visual and seismic displays. We tested whether male S. ocreata modify their courtship in relation to light environment, and associated utility of the visual components. Males were generally more active and more likely to perform the major courtship element (jerky tapping) when in the light. One courtship element (arching) was only observed in the light while another (vertical leg-extend) was only observed in the dark. Courtship in the dark retained visual components, suggesting spiders cannot disengage these components of multi-modal display even when superfluous. Once initiated, there was no evidence that performance rate or time spent in each courtship element differed in the light and in the dark.  相似文献

We studied territoriality and habitat use by yellow phase juvenile blue tangs, Acanthurus coeruleus, on a small fringing reef in Barbados, West Indies. Juvenile blue tangs occurred on the reef crest, spurs, and a transition zone between the reef crest and reef flat at a density of about 8 individuals per 100m2, but were much rarer on the reef flat. They were solitary and occupied stable home ranges (median=0.85m2) that increased with body size. Observational and experimental data documented aggressive defense of home ranges against conspecific and to a lesser extent congeneric, A. bahianus, juveniles (about 7.5 approaches and attacks per hour directed at intruders). Home range locations were structurally more complex and closer to a vertical face than expected by chance. Although juvenile blue tang territories overlapped considerably with those of larger and more aggressive Stegastes damselfish, which are believed to exclude solitary adult Acanthurus spp. from reef crest and spurs, the tangs avoided Stegastes and were rarely chased (<0.3 fleeing events per hour). Space use and social organization of yellow juvenile blue tangs contrast strikingly with that of both conspecific adults and congeneric juveniles.  相似文献

The present study describes the development of an alloplasmic haploid-inducer in durum wheat cv Cando. This cultivar possesses the homozygous wheat-rye translocation 1BL/1RS from the 6x-wheat cv Veery. The nucleus of 4x-Cando-Veery 1BL/1RS was introduced into Aegilops kotschyi cytoplasm by initially using (kotschyi)-Salmon as the maternal parent. In the cross of this alloplasmic durum line with Cando-Veery 1BL/1RS, which was used as the recurrent pollen parent, haploids (n=14) were produced. The frequency of haploids increased from 5.7% in the F1 generation to 14% in the BC1 generation. The presence of rye chromosome arm 1RS and the concomitant loss of 1BS in (kotschyi)-Cando-Veery 1BL/1RS are necessary for haploid induction. Proposals are made which may enable the use of haploids produced by nucleo-cytoplasmic interactions in future wheat breeding programs.  相似文献

Summary The habituation method was used to investigate the toad's ability to discriminate between two dimensional prey dummies of different shapes and patterns: If immediately following habituation of the prey-catching orienting behavior to a dummy form A, prey-catching responses are elicited when another form B is presented, it can be concluded that the toad is able to discriminate between the two patterns. The results show that toads are able to discern detailed structures within the outline limits of a 5 mm× 20 mm worm-like shape, on the basis of individual experience (stimulus specific habituation). In particular the results demonstrate that triangular stimulus patterns moved with a horizontal acute angle leading increase the releasing value of prey features whereas separate additional dots moved simultaneously may reduce the prey features of an optimal prey dummy. The presence of algae within the cases ofAgapetus fuscipes was investigated. Cases recognised as dirty or clean with the naked eye had more and less algal growth, respectively. Larvae in the former survived significantly longer when starved in the laboratory. Patterns of hard coral and sea urchin assemblage structure (species richness, diversity, and abundance) were studied in Kenyan coral reef lagoons which experienced different types of human resource use. Two protected reefs (Malindi and Watamu Marine National Parks) were protected from fishing and coral collection, but exposed to heavy tourist use. One reef (Mombasa MNP) received protection from fishermen for one year and was exploited for fish and corals prior to protection and was defined as a transitional reef. Three reefs (Vipingo, Kanamai, and Diani) were unprotected and experienced heavy fishing and some coral collection. Protected and unprotected reefs were distinct in terms of their assemblage structure with the transitional reef grouping with unprotected reefs based on relative and absolute abundance of coral genera. Protected reefs had slightly higher (p<0.01) coral cover (23.6 ± 8.3 % ± S.D.) than unprotected reefs (16.7 ± 8.5), but the transitional reef had the highest coral cover (30.8 ± 6.4) which increased by 250% since measured in 1987: largely attributable to a large increase inPorites nigrescens cover. Protected reefs had higher coral species richness and diversity and a greater relative abundance ofAcropora, Montipora andGalaxea than unprotected reefs. The transitional reef had high species richness, but lower diversity due to the high dominance ofPorites. Sea urchins showed the opposite pattern with highest diversity in most unprotected reefs. Coral cover, species richness, and diversity were negatively associated with sea urchin abundance, but the relative abundance ofPorites increased with sea urchin abundance to the point wherePorites composed >90% of the coral cover at sites with the highest sea urchin abundance. Effects of coral overcollection was only likely for the genusAcropora (staghorn corals). A combination of direct and indirect effects of human resource use may reduce diversity, species richness, and abundance of corals while increasing the absolute abundance of sea urchins and the relative cover ofPorites.  相似文献

4-Methylumbelliferyl 6-O-benzyl--d-lactoside (6Bn-MU-Lac) and some related compounds were synthesizedvia different selective reactions including phase-transfer glycosylation. Their suitability as substrates for a fluorometric assay of ceramide glycanase (CGase) was evaluated. Among others, the 6Bn-MU-Lac, which is resistant to exogalactosidase, was found to be a suitable substrate for routine assay of the CGase activity. For American leech CGase, theK m value is 0.232 mM at pH 5. TheN-linked carbohydrate chains of the-subunit of highly purified urinary human chorionic gonadotropin have been re-investigated. The oligosaccharides were released enzymatically by peptide-N 4-(N-acetyl--glucosaminyl)asparagine amidase-F, and fractionated by a combination of FPLC and HPLC. As a result of the application of improved fractionation methods, apart from the earlier reported carbohydrate chains, also small amounts of trisialo tri- and tri-antennary oligosaccharides were found. Synopsis Reproductive events tend to be synchronized in natural populations ofXiphophorus variatus. Males physically resembling one another tend to mature at the same rate and time. This coordinate development has also been seen in the laboratory. We hypothesize that juveniles resembling each other experience fewer aggressive responses from males than do juveniles without look-alikes, because of habituation of aggression. This would decrease social inhibition and permit their synchronous development.Females have an ovarian cycle. In the laboratory, crowding stress causes a suspension of breeding while a return to uncrowded conditions permits its resumption. Females released simultaneously from crowding tend to be synchronized in subsequent broods, although the synchrony deteriorates with time. Synchronizing events are shown to occur in natural populations.The consequences of reproductive synchrony in males and females are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis The influence of habitat on the size distribution of groupers was examined at sites in the middle and upper Florida Keys. Transects were used to quantify the size distribution of groupers at study sites. There were significant differences in the size distribution of groupers within and among reef community types related to differences in species composition and patch reef size. Groupers with a giant life-history style (Sullivan & de Garine 1994) were more abundant, but smaller, on inshore patch reefs than offshore reef community types. However, grouper species with a dwarf life-history style (Sullivan & de Garine 1994) showed an opposite pattern with a lower abundance, but larger size, inshore than offshore. The length category of groupers constituting the majority of individuals observed on patch reefs was inversely related to reef size. Graysby Epinephelus cruentatus were shown to recruit to deeper (15–20 m), low-relief habitats offshore. Several factors influenced the size distribution of groupers in the study sites including habitat type, spear-fishing, competition, predation, and recruitment.  相似文献
