N-removal in a granular sludge sequencing batch airlift reactor   总被引:25,自引:0,他引:25
The removal of N-compounds in the sequencing batch airlift reactor (SBAR) containing granular sludge was studied under conditions of decreased dissolved oxygen (DO). A simulation model was developed to describe and evaluate the effects of several process conditions in the SBAR on N-removal performance. The model described the experimental data reasonable well. It has been shown that nitrification, denitrification, and removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) can occur simultaneously in a granular sludge SBR. It has also been shown that the exact location of the autotrophic biomass influences the net N-removal. The distribution of the autotrophic biomass is influenced by the DO in the reactor. The optimal DO value is expected to be around 40% air saturation. It was shown that storage and subsequent degradation of poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) benefit the denitrification. In particular, PHB is stored in bacteria situated in deeper layers of the granules below where the autotrophic activity occurs, serves as a C-source for denitrification.  相似文献

Variable aeration in sequencing batch reactor with aerobic granular sludge   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study investigated the effects of reduced aeration in famine period on the performance of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with aerobic granular sludge. Aerobic granules were first cultivated in two SBRs (R1 and R2) with acetate as sole carbon source. From operation day 27, aeration rate in R1 was reduced from 1.66 to 0.55 cm s(-1) from 110 min to the end of each cycle and further reduced from 30 min to the end of each cycle from day 63. R2 as a control was operated with a constant aeration rate of 1.66 cm s(-1) in the whole cycle during the entire experimental period. Results showed that changing trends of SVI, concentration, average size and VSS/SS of biomass with time in R1 and R2 were similar although different aeration modes were adopted. At steady state, SVI of aerobic granules and biomass concentration maintained at about 40 ml g(-1) and 6 g l(-1), respectively. Average size of granules was about 750 microm in R1 while 550 microm in R2. This is the first study to demonstrate that aerobic granular sludge could be stable at reduced aeration rate in famine period during more than 3-month operation. Such an operation strategy with reduced aeration rate will lead to a significant reduction of energy consumption, which makes the aerobic granular sludge technology more competitive over conventional activated sludge process. Furthermore, the stability of aerobic granular system with variable aeration further indicates that the difference of physiology and kinetics of aerobic granule in feast and famine periods results in the different requirements of oxygen and shear stress for the stability of granules, which will deepen the understanding of mechanism of aerobic granulation in sequencing batch reactor.  相似文献

Aerobic granules can be used for the treatment of industrial or municipal wastewater, but high aeration rate is required for the stable operation of the granular sludge system. Therefore, the aim of this research was to reduce aeration rate greatly to decrease the energy consumption for the technology of aerobic granules. Based on the characteristics of sequencing batch reactor with distinct feast and famine periods, aeration rate was reduced from 1.66 to 0.55 cm s−1 in the famine period after granules were formed. It was found that the settleability of aerobic granules in reactor R1 with reduced aeration was the same as that of aerobic granules in reactor R2 with constant aeration rate of 1.66 cm s−1. However, the outer morphology of aerobic granules gradually changed from round shape to long shape, and minor population showed certain shift after aeration rate was reduced in the famine period. Since good settleability is the most essential feature of aerobic granules, it can be said that reducing aeration rate in famine period did not influence the stable operation of aerobic granular sludge system. Furthermore, the experimental results indicated that aeration rate in feast period was much more important to the stable operation of aerobic granules than that in famine period.  相似文献

A physiological study of a nitrifying sludge was carried out in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Pseudo steady-state nitrification conditions were obtained with an ammonium removal efficiency of 99% +/- 1% and 98% +/- 2% conversion of NH4+-N to NO3 - -N. The rate of biomass production was negligible (1.3 +/- 0.1 mg microbial protein-N.L(-1).d(-1)). The sludge presented good settling properties with sludge volume index values lower than 20 mL.g(-1) and an exopolymeric protein/carbohydrate ratio of 0.53 +/- 0.34. Kinetic results indicated that the nitrifying behavior of the sludge changed with the number of cycles. After 22 cycles, a decrease in the specific rate of NO3- -N production coupled with an increase in the NO2- -N accumulation were observed. These results showed that the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria decreased at a longer operation time. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria were found to exhibit the best stability. After 4 months of operation, the specific rates of NH4+-N consumption and NO3- -N production were 1.72 NH4+-N per microbial protein-N per hour (g.g(-1).h(-1)) and 0.54 NO3- -N per microbial protein-N per hour (g.g(-1).h(-1)), respectively.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor was started-up with flocculated biomass and operated primarily for enhanced biological phosphate removal. Ten weeks after the start-up, gradual formation of granular sludge was observed. The compact biomass structure allowed halving the settling time, the initial reactor volume, and doubling the influent COD concentration. Continued operation confirmed the possibility of maintaining a stable granular biomass with a sludge volume index less than 40 ml g–1, while securing a removal efficiency of 95% for carbon, 99.6% for phosphate, and 71% for nitrogen. Microscopic observations revealed a morphological diversity.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge can successfully be cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating dairy wastewater. Attention has to be paid to the fact that suspended solids are always present in the effluent of aerobic granular sludge reactors, making a post-treatment step necessary. Sufficient post-treatment can be achieved through a sedimentation process with a hydraulic retention time of 15–30 min. After complete granulation and the separation of biomass from the effluent, removal efficiencies of 90% CODtotal, 80% Ntotal and 67% Ptotal can be achieved at a volumetric exchange ratio of 50% and a cycle duration of 8 h. Effluent values stabilize at around 125 mg l–1 CODdissolved. The maximum applicable loading rate is nevertheless limited, as the stability of aerobic granules very much depends on the presence of distinct feast and famine conditions and the degradation of real wastewaters shows slower kinetics compared with synthetic wastewaters. As loading rate and volumetric exchange ratio are coupled in an SBR system, the potential of granular sludge for improving process efficiency is also limited.  相似文献

Nutrient removal and sludge age in a sequencing batch reactor   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this work was to establish a relation between the mean cellular retention time and the ability of activated sludge to remove phosphate and ammonium. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with a total volume of 1.94 m3 was fed with municipal wastewater and was operated under four different organic loading rates to obtain sludge ages of 23, 16, 6, and 3 days. The operational strategy included fill, anaerobic, aerobic, settling and draw phases. The experimental work lasted 445 days. Biological phosphate removal was achieved with sludge ages from 6 to 23 days. The highest PO4-P removal rate observed was of 98% and corresponds to a 16-day sludge age; phosphate removal increased with the sludge age. A sludge age of 3 days resulted in a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of 81% and a sludge age of 23 days in a removal rate of 99%. Full nitrification was observed with a sludge age of 16 days. Nitrification increased with the sludge age. The 3-day sludge age did not allow nitrification. The phosphate concentrations in the biomass were inversely proportional to the sludge age.  相似文献

Using data from previously reported experimental work, theoretical kinetic analysis of the aerobic uptake of phosphate is presented. The data obtained in biofilm sequencing batch laboratory reactor was adjusted with polynomial regression to fit a curve during the uptake phase and then analyzed with two kinetic models: Classical Michaelis-Menten and one considering the enzymes involved have allosteric character. Data from nine experimental runs, every one under different operational conditions, were analyzed. The results show that the experimental values used fit in the model of an allosteric enzyme or enzyme-complex with four-binding sites. Based on this consideration, a catalytic model of sequential interactions was obtained which allows the interpretation of the kinetic mechanisms involved in the process. The calculated phosphorus uptake rate values do not show significant differences from the experimental ones.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge is a new type of microbe auto-immobilization technology; in this paper, short-cut nitrification and denitrification were effectively combined with the granular sludge technology. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification granules were developed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using synthetic wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen at 25 °C with a dissolved oxygen concentration above 2.0 mg/L and a 15 days sludge retention time. The characteristics of the sludge and the removal efficiency were studied, and the removal mechanisms of the pollutants and the process of short-cut nitrification were analyzed. The average granule diameter of the granular sludge was 704.0 μm. The removal rates of pollutants and the accumulation rate of nitrite in the SBR were studied. During treatment of wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen, simultaneous nitrification, and denitrification and the stripping process could contribute to the removal of total nitrogen. The high pH value, the high concentration of free ammonia, and the delamination of granular sludge were the main factors contributing to the short-cut nitrification property of granular sludge in the reaction process.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge was successfully cultivated with the effluent of internal circulation reactor in a pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Soy protein wastewater was used as an external carbon source for altering the influent chemical oxygen demand/nitrogen (COD/N) ratios of SBR. Initially, the phenomenon of partial nitrification was observed and depressed by increasing the influent COD/N ratios from 3.32 to 7.24 mg/mg. After 90 days of aerobic granulation, the mixed liquor suspended solids concentration of the reactor increased from 2.80 to 7.02 g/L, while the sludge volumetric index decreased from 105.51 to 42.99 mL/g. The diameters of mature aerobic granules vary in the range of 1.2 to 2.0 mm. The reactor showed excellent removal performances for COD and $ {\text{NH}}_4^{ + }{\text{ - N}} $ after aerobic granulation, and average removal efficiencies were over 93% and 98%, respectively. The result of this study could provide further information on the development of aerobic granule-based system for full-scale applications.  相似文献

A mathematical model is developed to describe the growth of multiple microbial species such as heterotrophs and autotrophs in activated sludge system. Performance of a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor involving storage process is used to evaluate the model. Results show that the model is appropriate for predicting the fate of major model components, i.e., chemical oxygen demand, storage polymers (X STO), volatile suspended solid (VSS), ammonia, and oxygen uptake rate (OUR). The influence of sludge retention time (SRT) on reactor performance is analyzed by model simulation. The biomass components require different time periods from one to four times of SRT to reach steady state. At an SRT of 20 days, the active bacteria (autotrophs and heterotrophs) constitute about 57% of the VSS; the remaining biomass is not active. The model established demonstrates its capacity of simulating the reactor performance and getting insight in autotrophic and heterotrophic growth in complex activated sludge systems.  相似文献

Poor long-term stability of aerobic granules developed in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) remains a limitation to widespread use of aerobic granulation in treating wastewater. Filamentous growth has been commonly reported in aerobic granular sludge SBR. This review attempts to address the instability problem of aerobic granular sludge SBR from the perspective of filamentous growth in the system. The possible causes of filamentous growth are identified, including long retention times of solids, low substrate concentration in the liquid phase, high substrate gradient within the granule, dissolved oxygen deficiency in the granule, nutrient deficiency inside granule, temperature shift and flow patterns. Because of cyclic operation of aerobic granular sludge SBR and peculiarities of aerobic granules, various stresses can be present simultaneously and can result in progressive development of filamentous growth in aerobic granular sludge SBR. Overgrowth of filamentous bacteria under stress conditions appears to be a major cause of instability of aerobic granular sludge SBR. Specific recommendations are made for controlling filamentous growth.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge sequencing batch reactors (SBR) are a promising technology for treating wastewater. Increasing evidence suggests that aerobic granulation in SBRs is driven by selection pressures exerted on microorganisms. Three major selection pressures have been identified as follows: settling time, volume exchange ratio and discharge time. This review demonstrates that these three major selection pressures can all be unified to one, the minimal settling velocity of bio-particles, that determines aerobic granulation in SBRs. The unified selection pressure theory is a useful guide for manipulating and optimizing the formation and characteristics of aerobic granules in SBRs. Furthermore, the unified theory provides a single engineering basis for scale up of aerobic granular sludge SBRs.  相似文献

Aerobic granulation with brewery wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Aerobic granular sludge was cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor fed with brewery wastewater. After nine-week operation, stable granules with sizes of 2-7 mm were obtained. With the granulation, the SVI value decreased from 87.5 to 32 mL/g. The granular sludge had an excellent settling ability with the settling velocity over 91 m/h. Aerobic granular sludge exhibited good performance in the organics and nitrogen removal from brewery wastewater. After granulation, high and stable removal efficiencies of 88.7% COD(t), 88.9% NH(4)(+)-N were achieved at the volumetric exchange ratio of 50% and cycle duration of 6h. The average COD(t) and COD(s) of the effluent were 212 and 134 mg/L, respectively, and the average effluent ammonium concentration was less than 14.4 mg/L. Nitrogen was removed due to nitrification and simultaneous denitrification in the inner core of granules.  相似文献

Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were concurrently operated to investigate the effect of Mg(2+) augmentation on aerobic granulation. Augmentation with 10mg/l Mg(2+) in R2 significantly decreased the sludge granulation (defined as that over 15% of granules were larger than 0.6mm) time from 32 days to 18 days, at the same time, the mean diameter of the granules in R2 was 2.9 mm after the granulation, which was consistently larger than that (1.8mm) in R1. Mg(2+)-fed granules were denser and more compact, showed better settling and had higher polysaccharide contents, but it did not result in a difference in microbial morphology. The results demonstrated that Mg(2+) enhanced the sludge granulation process in the sequencing batch reactor.  相似文献

AIMS: The applicability of plasmid pNB2 for bioaugmentation of bacteria in model wastewater treatment reactors receiving 3-chloroaniline (3-CA) was investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: A setup of three biofilm reactors was studied, all initially inoculated with bacteria from activated sludge. Reactor PB received a Pseudomonas putida pNB2 donor strain not able to degrade 3-CA. Positive control reactor P received a 3-CA degrading Comamonas testosteroni pNB2-transconjugant. The negative control reactor N remained unchanged. Reactor P showed 3-CA degradation from the beginning of the experiment whereas in reactor PB, degradation started after an initial lag period. No degradation was observed in reactor N. PCR analysis showed that the P. putida donor abundance dropped in reactor PB, whereas the plasmid abundance did not, indicating transfer to other bacteria. A number of different 3-CA degrading C. testosteroni strains carrying pNB2 could be isolated from reactor PB. CONCLUSIONS: A successful plasmid-mediated bioaugmentation was achieved with C. testosteroni being the dominant 3-CA degrading pNB2 transconjugant species active in reactor PB. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The study underlines the potential of gene transfer to contribute to establishment and spread of genetic information in general, particularly emphasizing the spread of xenobiotic degrading potential by dissemination of catabolic genes.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to demonstrate the potential of a two-phase sequencing batch reactor in degrading xenobiotics and to evaluate the kinetic parameters leading to a mathematical model of the system. 4-Nitrophenol (4NP), a typical representative of substituted phenols, was selected as the target xenobiotic; this compound has never been remediated in a two-phase bioreactor before. Partition tests were conducted to determine the most appropriate partitioning solvent, and among the three investigated solvents (1-undecanol, 2-undecanone and oleyl alcohol), 2-undecanone was chosen because of its favourable partition coefficient and its negligible emulsion-forming tendencies. Moreover, the selected solvent showed satisfactory biocompatibility characteristics with respect to the biomass, with only minor effects on the intrinsic microbial kinetics. Kinetic tests were then performed in a sequencing batch reactor (2-l volume) operated in both conventional one- and two-phase configurations, with the two-phase system showing a significant improvement in the process kinetics in terms of reduced inhibition and increased maximum removal rate. The obtained kinetic parameters suggest that the two-phase sequencing batch system may find full-scale application, as the maximum removal rate k max (~3 mg 4NP mgVSS−1 day−1) is of the same order of magnitude of heterotrophic bacteria operating in wastewater treatment plants.  相似文献

Biodegradation, kinetics, and microbial diversity of aerobic granules were investigated under a high range of organic loading rate 6.0 to 12.0 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD) m−3 day−1 in a sequencing batch reactor. The selection and enriching of different bacterial species under different organic loading rates had an important effect on the characteristics and performance of the mature aerobic granules and caused the difference on granular biodegradation and kinetic behaviors. Good granular characteristics and performance were presented at steady state under various organic loading rates. Larger and denser aerobic granules were developed and stabilized at relatively higher organic loading rates with decreased bioactivity in terms of specific oxygen utilization rate and specific growth rate (μ overall) or solid retention time. The decrease of bioactivity was helpful to maintain granule stability under high organic loading rates and improve reactor operation. The corresponding biokinetic coefficients of endogenous decay rate (k d), observed yield (Y obs), and theoretical yield (Y) were measured and calculated in this study. As the increase of organic loading rate, a decreased net sludge production (Y obs) is associated with an increased solid retention time, while k d and Y changed insignificantly and can be regarded as constants under different organic loading rates.  相似文献

Selection pressure-driven aerobic granulation in a sequencing batch reactor   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
In recent years, the research on aerobic granulation has been intensive. So far, almost all aerobic granules can form only in sequencing batch reactors (SBR), while the reason is not yet understood. This paper attempts to review the factors involved in aerobic granulation in SBR, including substrate composition, organic loading rate, hydrodynamic shear force, feast-famine regime, feeding strategy, dissolved oxygen, reactor configuration, solids retention time, cycle time, settling time and exchange ratio. The major selection pressures responsible for aerobic granulation are identified as the settling time and exchange ratio. A concept of the minimal settling velocity of bioparticles is proposed; and it is quantitatively demonstrated that the effects of settling time and exchange ratio on aerobic granulation in SBR can be interpreted and unified on the basis of this concept very well. It appears that the formation and characteristics of aerobic granules can be manipulated through properly adjusting either the settling time or the exchange ratio in SBR. Consequently, theoretical and experimental evidence point to the fact that aerobic granulation is a selection pressure-driven cell-to-cell immobilization process.  相似文献
