Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) was realized by means of a novel air-lift internal loop biofilm reactor, in which aeration was set in middle of the reactor. During operation, the aeration was adjusted to get appropriate dissolve oxygen (DO) in bulk solution and let aerobic and anoxic zone coexist in one reactor. When aeration was at 0.6 and 0.2 L/min, corresponding to DO of 5.8 and 2.5 mg/L in bulk solution, ammonia nitrogen removal percentage reached about 80 and 90 %, but total nitrogen removal percentage was lower than 25 %. While the aeration was reduced to 0.1 L/min, aerobic and anoxic zones existed simultaneously in one reactor to get 75 % of ammonia nitrogen and 50 % of total nitrogen removal percentage. Biofilms were, respectively, taken from aerobic and anoxic zone to verify their function of nitrification and denitrification in two flasks, in which ammonia nitrogen was transferred into nitrate completely by aerobic biofilm, and nitrate was removed more than 80 % by anoxic biofilm. Microelectrode was used to measure the DO distribution inside biofilms in anoxic zone corresponding to different aerations. When aeration was at 0.6 and 0.2 L/min, DO inside biofilm was more than 1.5 mg/L, but the DO inside biofilm decreased to anoxic status with depth of biofilm increasing corresponding to aeration of 0.1 L/min. The experimental results indicated that SND could be realized because of simultaneous existence of aerobic and anoxic biofilms in one reactor.  相似文献

Energy-positive sewage treatment can be achieved by implementation of oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification/denitrification (OLAND) in the main water line, as the latter does not require organic carbon and therefore allows maximum energy recovery through anaerobic digestion of organics. To test the feasibility of mainstream OLAND, the effect of a gradual temperature decrease from 29 to 15 °C and a chemical oxygen demand (COD)/N increase from 0 to 2 was tested in an OLAND rotating biological contactor operating at 55–60 mg NH4 +–N?L?1 and a hydraulic retention time of 1 h. Moreover, the effect of the operational conditions and feeding strategies on the reactor cycle balances, including NO and N2O emissions were studied in detail. This study showed for the first time that total nitrogen removal rates of 0.5 g N?L?1?day?1 can be maintained when decreasing the temperature from 29 to 15 °C and when low nitrogen concentration and moderate COD levels are treated. Nitrite accumulation together with elevated NO and N2O emissions (5 % of N load) were needed to favor anammox compared with nitratation at low free ammonia (<0.25 mg N?L?1), low free nitrous acid (<0.9 μg N?L?1), and higher DO levels (3–4 mg O2?L?1). Although the total nitrogen removal rates showed potential, the accumulation of nitrite and nitrate resulted in lower nitrogen removal efficiencies (around 40 %), which should be improved in the future. Moreover, a balance should be found in the future between the increased NO and N2O emissions and a decreased energy consumption to justify OLAND mainstream treatment.  相似文献

A pre-anoxic MBBR system was subjected to increasing organic loading rates up to 18 gCOD/(m2 day). At 3 gCOD/(m2 day), most of the incoming organic matter was removed via denitrification. However, at higher loads, anoxic COD removal became limited by the nitrite/nitrate supply from the aerobic reactor, which assumed an important role in this conversion. Despite the application of low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels (<2 mg/L) in this tank, nitrification was observed to be nearly complete until 8 gCOD/(m2 day). As the organic input was increased, the maximum specific nitrifying activity gradually declined. Activity tests suggested that an oxygen-limited environment was established in the biofilm. At lower loads [3–8 gCOD/(m2 day)], the nitrification product obtained was affected by the DO concentration, whereas from 16 to 21 gCOD/(m2 day), nitrite/nitrate profiles were likely associated with microbial stratification in the biofilm. The results also indicated that the role of the suspended biomass in the overall nitrification and denitrification can be very significant in high loaded MBBRs and should not be neglected, even at low HRTs.  相似文献

Wetlands are biogeochemical hotspots that have been identified as important sites for both nitrogen (N) removal from surface waters and greenhouse gas (GHG) production. Floating vegetation (FV) commonly occurs in natural and constructed wetlands, but the effects of such vegetation on denitrification, N retention, and GHG production are unknown. To address this knowledge gap, we used microcosm experiments to examine how FV affects N and GHG dynamics. Denitrification and N retention rates were significantly higher in microcosms with FV (302 μmol N m?2 h?1 and 203 μmol N m?2 h?1, respectively) than in those without (63 μmol N m?2 h?1 and 170 μmol N m?2 h?1, respectively). GHG production rates were not significantly different between the two treatments. Denitrification rates were likely elevated due to decreased dissolved oxygen (DO) in microcosms with FV. The balance of photosynthesis and respiration was more important in affecting DO concentrations than decreased surface gas exchange. The denitrification fraction (N2-N production: N retention) was higher in microcosms with FV (100 %) than those without (33 %) under increased (tripled) N loading. A 5 °C temperature increase resulted in significantly lower denitrification rates in the absence of FV and significantly lowered N2O production with FV, but did not significantly change CH4 production or N retention in either treatment. These results suggest that intentional introduction of FV in constructed wetlands could enhance N removal while leaving GHG production unchanged, an insight that should be further tested via in situ experiments.  相似文献

We analysed the spatial and temporal variability of benthic nitrogen fluxes and denitrification rates in a sub-alpine meromictic lake (Lake Idro, Italy), and compared in-lake nitrogen retention and loss with the net anthropogenic nitrogen inputs to the watershed. We hypothesized a low nitrogen retention and denitrification capacity due to meromixis. This results from nitrate supply from the epilimnion slowing down during stratification and oxygen deficiency inhibiting nitrification and promoting ammonium recycling and its accumulation. We also hypothesized a steep vertical gradient of sedimentary denitrification capacity, decreasing with depth and oxygen deficiency. These are important and understudied issues in inland waters, as climate change and direct anthropic pressures may increase the extent of meromixis. Nearshore sediments had high denitrification rates (87 mg m?2 day?1) and efficiency (~ 100%), while in the monimolimnion denitrification was negligible. The littoral zone, covering 10% of the lake surface, contributed ~50% of total denitrification, while the monimolimnion, which covered 70% of the sediment surface, contributed to < 13% of total denitrification. The persistent and expanding meromixis of Lake Idro is expected to further decrease its nitrogen removal capacity (31% of the incoming nitrogen load) compared to what has been measured in other temperate lakes. Values up to 60% are generally reported for other such lakes. Results of this study are relevant as the combination of anthropogenic pressures, climate change and meromixis may threaten the nitrogen processing capacity of lakes.  相似文献

Intact sediment cores from rivers of the Bothnian Bay (Baltic Sea) were studied for denitrification based on benthic fluxes of molecular nitrogen (N2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in a temperature controlled continuous water flow laboratory microcosm under 10, 30, 100, and 300 μM of 15N enriched nitrate (NO3 ?, ~98 at. %). Effluxes of both N2 and N2O from sediment to the overlying water increased with increasing NO3 ? load. Although the ratio of N2O to N2 increased with increasing NO3 ? load, it remained below 0.04, N2 always being the main product. At the NO3 ? concentrations most frequently found in the studied river water (10–100 μM), up to 8% of the NO3 ? was removed in denitrification, whereas with the highest concentration (300 μM), the removal by denitrification was less than 2%. However, overall up to 42% of the NO3 ? was removed by mechanisms other than denitrification. As the microbial activity was simultaneously enhanced by the NO3 ? load, shown as increased oxygen consumption and dissolved inorganic carbom efflux, it is likely that a majority of the NO3 ? was assimilated by microbes during their growth. The 15N content in ammonium (NH4 +) in the efflux was low, suggesting that reduction of NO3 ? to NH4 + was not the reason for the NO3 ? removal. This study provides the first published information on denitrification and N2O fluxes and their regulation by NO3 ? load in eutrophic high latitude rivers.  相似文献

In this study, an aged refuse bioreactor was constructed to remove nitrogen in a mature landfill leachate. The nitrogen removal efficiency and the microbial community composition in the bioreactor were investigated. The results showed that the aged refuse bioreactor removed more than 90 % of total nitrogen in the leachate under the nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 0.74 g/kg (vs) day, and the total nitrogen removal rate decreased to 62.2 % when NLR increased up to 2.03 g/kg (vs) day. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction results showed that the average cell number of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the bioreactor was 1.58?×?108 cells/g, which accounted for 0.41 % of total bacteria. The number of anammox bacteria in the reactor was 1.09?×?108 cells/g, which accounted for 0.27 % of total bacteria. Isotopic 15N tracing experiments showed that nearly 10 % of nitrogen was removed by anammox. High-throughout 454 pyrosequencing revealed that the predominant bacteria in the bioreactor were Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Gemmatimonadetes, including various nitrifiers and denitrifiers with diverse heterotrophic and autotrophic metabolic pathways, supporting that nitrogen was removed through different pathways in this aged refuse bioreactor.  相似文献

Most microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) processes are induced by aerobic bacteria; thus, oxygen availability plays an important role in MICP treatment. To determine the effects of oxygen supply on MICP treatment catalyzed by Sporosarcina pasteurii, contrast tests under an aerated condition, air-restricted condition, and open air condition were conducted. The results showed that dissolved oxygen (DO) in the air-restricted reactor decreased with time and was almost exhausted within 7 days; DO in the open box decreased by 50% after 7 days of treatment because of the superficial air supply; and DO in the aerated box maintained an initial high level because the consumed oxygen was supplied immediately by adequate air bubbles in the treatment solution. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and CaCO3 content are high under the aerated condition, moderate under the open condition, and poor under the air-restricted condition. The UCS can be 100 times different depending on the different oxygen supply conditions. The overall influence process is as follows: oxygen is dissolved to supply DO for life and activity of the aerobic urea hydrolysis bacteria; then, urea is hydrolyzed to carbonate anions for CaCO3 precipitation in the presence of Ca2+; and finally, CaCO3 precipitation results in the strengthening of sand. The results indicate that a sufficient air supply is essential to improve MICP processes catalyzed by aerobic bacteria.  相似文献

This study has investigated the acclimation of ammonia-oxidizing communities (AOC) to low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. Under controlled laboratory conditions, two sequencing batch reactors seeded with activated sludge from the same source were operated at high DO (near saturation) and low DO (0.1 mg O2/L) concentrations for a period of 220 days. The results demonstrated stable and complete nitrification at low DO conditions after an acclimation period of approximately 140 days. Acclimation brought about increased specific oxygen uptake rates and enhanced expression of a particular heme protein in the soluble fraction of the cells in the low DO reactor as compared to the high DO reactor. The induced protein was determined not to be any of the enzymes or electron carriers present in the conventional account of ammonia oxidation in ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Further research is required to determine the specific nature of the heme protein detected; a preliminary assessment suggests either a type of hemoglobin protein or a lesser-known component of the energy-transducing pathways of AOB. The effect of DO on AOC dynamics was evaluated using the 16S rRNA gene as the basis for phylogenetic comparisons and organism quantification. Ammonium consumption by ammonia-oxidizing archaea and anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was ruled out by fluorescent in situ hybridization in both reactors. Even though Nitrosomonas europaea was the dominant AOB lineage in both high and low DO sequencing batch reactors at the end of operation, this enrichment could not be linked in the low DO reactor to acclimation to oxygen-limited conditions.  相似文献

Sodium erythorbate (NaE) is a common antioxidant in food processing. In this study, the abilities of NaE to reduce photosynthetic oxygen accumulation in culture medium and improve microalgal growth were evaluated using the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris and glucose as a reference. NaE (from 2.0 to 16.0 g L?1) led to a lower accumulation of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a concentration-dependent manner. A significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) between the optical density (OD680) and DO level suggested that algal growth was promoted by NaE through depleting oxygen in the medium. After 12 days of cultivation, maximum OD680 and biomass were obtained with a NaE dosage of 8.0 g L?1 (respectively, 3.99 and 6.26 times greater than in the control without NaE). Compared with this dosage group which maintained an appropriate low DO level (2 to 6 mg L?1), higher dosage groups showed relatively little growth promotion due to an insufficiency of DO (<2 mg L?1). When glucose was added into mixotrophic systems for C. vulgaris, to the same total carbon amount as NaE, DO fell rapidly to less than 2 mg L?1 owing to its greater consumption (43.9%) compared to that of NaE (16.7%). Furthermore, in the NaE treatment, the pigment contents, cell density, and algal biomass were, respectively, 4.17 to 4.44 times, 2.67 times, and 1.21 times greater than in the glucose treatment. These findings indicate that algal autotrophic growth could be enhanced effectively by NaE through the moderate control of DO.  相似文献

Microorganism with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability plays a significant role in nitrogen removal process, especially in the eutrophic waters with excessive nitrogen loads. The nitrogen removal capacity of microorganism may suffer from low temperature or nitrite nitrogen source. In this study, a hypothermia aerobic nitrite-denitrifying bacterium, Pseudomonas tolaasii strain Y-11, was selected to determine the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability with mixed nitrogen source at 15 °C. The sole nitrogen removal efficiencies of strain Y-11 in simulated wastewater were obtained. After 24 h of incubation at 15 °C, the ammonium nitrogen fell below the detection limit from an initial value of 10.99 mg/L. Approximately 88.0 ± 0.33% of nitrate nitrogen was removed with the initial concentration of 11.78 mg/L and the nitrite nitrogen was not detected with the initial concentration of 10.75 mg/L after 48 h of incubation at 15 °C. Additionally, the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification nitrogen removal ability of P. tolaasii strain Y-11 was evaluated using low concentration of mixed NH4+-N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 5 mg/L-N each) and high concentration of mixed NH4+–N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 100 mg/L-N each). There was no nitrite nitrogen accumulation at the time of evaluation. The results demonstrated that P. tolaasii strain Y-11 had higher simultaneous nitrification and denitrification capacity with low concentration of mixed inorganic nitrogen sources and may be applied in low temperature wastewater treatment.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the factors affecting the performance of partial nitrification in a sequencing batch reactor. During a 140-day long-term operation, influent pH value, dissolved oxygen (DO), and chemical oxygen demand/nitrogen (COD/N) ratio were selected as operating factors to evaluate the maintenance and recovery of nitrite accumulation. Results showed that high DO concentration (2–4 mg/L) could damage nitrite accumulation immediately. However, nitrite accumulation ratio (NAR) could be increased from 1.68?±?1.51 to 35.46?±?7.86 % when increasing the pH values from 7.5 to 8.3 due to the increased free ammonia concentration. Afterwards, stable partial nitrification and high NAR could be recovered when the reactor operated under low DO concentration (0.5–1.0 mg/L). However, it required a long time to recover the partial nitrification of the reactor when the influent COD/N ratios were altered. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis implied that ammonium oxidizing bacteria were completely recovered to the dominant nitrifying bacteria in the system. Meanwhile, sludge volumetric index of the reactor gradually decreased from 115.6 to 56.6 mL/g, while the mean diameter of sludge improved from74.57 to 428.8 μm by using the strategy of reducing settling time. The obtained results could provide useful information between the operational conditions and the performance of partial nitrification when treating nitrogen-rich industrial wastewater.  相似文献

To achieve nitritation from complete-nitrification seed sludge at room temperature of 19 ± 1 °C, a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating domestic wastewater with low C/N ratios was operated to investigate the control and optimization of nitrifying communities. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) dominance was enhanced through the combination of low DO concentrations (<1.0 mg/L) and preset short-cycle control of aeration time. Nitritation was successfully established with NO2?-N/NOx?-N over 95%. To avoid the adverse impact of low DO concentrations on AOB activities, DO concentrations were increased to 1–2 mg/L. At the normal DO levels and temperatures, on-line control strategy of aerobic durations maintained the stability of nitritation with nitrite accumulation rate over 95% and ammonia removal above 97%. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) analysis presented that the maximal percentage of AOB in biomass reached 10.9% and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were washed out.  相似文献

Alginates are polysaccharides that may be used as viscosifiers and gel or film-forming agents with a great diversity of applications. The alginates produced by bacteria such as Azotobacter vinelandii are acetylated. The presence of acetyl groups in this type of alginate increases its solubility, viscosity, and swelling capability. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in glucose-limited chemostat cultivations of A. vinelandii ATCC9046, the influence of dissolved oxygen tension (DO) and specific growth rate (μ) on the degree of acetylation of alginates produced by this bacterium. In glucose-limited chemostat cultivations, the degree of alginate acetylation was evaluated under two conditions of DO (1 and 9 %) and for a range of specific growth rates (0.02–0.15 h?1). In addition, the alginate yields and PHB production were evaluated. High DO in the culture resulted in a high degree of alginate acetylation, reaching a maximum acetylation degree of 6.88 % at 9 % DO. In contrast, the increment of μ had a negative effect on the production and acetylation of the polymer. It was found that at high DO (9 %) and low μ, there was a reduction of the respiration rate, and the PHB accumulation was negligible, suggesting that the flux of acetyl-CoA (the acetyl donor) was diverted to alginate acetylation.  相似文献

The simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process for treating domestic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR was operated with air flow rate of 500 L h?1 at 30 °C. Domestic wastewater was used as influent and Kaldnes rings were used as biomass carriers. In the beginning, long aeration condition was implemented to cultivate nitrification biofilm. Afterwards, intermittent aerobic condition was conducted during the cycle operation. The influent organic matter loading rate was improved by reducing the aeration and mixing times. Consequently, when the SNAD biofilm reactor was fed with the organic matter loading rate of 0.77 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the bio-bubbles appeared in the reactor and the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency decreased. After the organic matter loading rate decreased to 0.67 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the reactor showed excellent nitrogen removal performance. The TIN removal efficiency varied between 80 and 90 %, and the average TIN removal loading rate was 0.22 (kg TIN m?3 d?1). Additionally, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation confirmed that the anammox bacteria located in the inner part of the carriers. Finally, the microbial community analysis of 16S rRNA gene cloning revealed that the anammox bacteria on the carriers consisted of three main genuses: Candidatus Brocadia sp., Candidatus Brocadia caroliniensis and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida.  相似文献

Energy consumption of municipal wastewater treatment plants can be reduced by the anaerobic pre-treatment of the main wastewater stream. After this pre-treatment, nitrogen can potentially be removed by partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A). Currently, the application of PN/A is limited to nitrogen-rich streams (>500 mg L?1) and temperatures 25–35 °C. But, anaerobically pretreated municipal wastewater is characterized by much lower nitrogen concentrations (20–100 mg L?1) and lower temperatures (10–25 °C). We operated PN/A under similar conditions: total ammonium nitrogen concentration 50 mg L?1 and lab temperature (22 °C). PN/A was operated for 342 days in a 4 L moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). At 0.4 mg O2 L?1, nitrogen removal rate 33 g N m?3 day?1 and 80 % total nitrogen removal efficiency was achieved. The capacity of the reactor was limited by low AOB activity. We observed significant anammox activity (40 g N m?3 day?1) even at 12 °C, improving the applicability of PN/A for municipal wastewater treatment.  相似文献

The influence of Potamogeton pectinatus colonisation on benthic nitrogen dynamics was studied in the littoral zone of a lowland pit lake with high nitrate concentration (~200 μM). Our hypothesis was that in aquatic environments where nitrogen availability is not limiting, colonisation by rooted macrophytes changes the dynamics of the benthic nitrogen cycle, stimulating N assimilation and denitrification and increasing the system capacity to take up external nitrogen loads. To test this hypothesis, we quantified and compared seasonal variations of light and dark benthic metabolism, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) fluxes, denitrification and N assimilation rates in an area colonised by P. pectinatus and a reference site colonised by microphytobenthos. In both areas, the benthic system was net autotrophic and a sink for DIN (2,241–2,644 mmol m?2 y?1). Plant colonisation increased nitrogen losses via denitrification by 30% compared to the unvegetated area. In contrast to what is generally observed in coastal marine systems, where the presence of rooted macrophytes limits denitrification rates, under the very high nitrate concentrations in the studied lake, both denitrification (1,237–1,570 mmol m?2 y?1) and N assimilation (1,039–1,095 mmol m?2 y?1) played important and comparable roles in the removal of DIN from the water column.  相似文献

High Pichia pastoris biomass density could be obtained using high co-feeding rate of methanol and sorbitol in a fed-batch or continuous culture, while further higher feeding rate finally leads to oxygen limitation in bioreactor. In the literature, there is lack of report about AOX1 promoter regulation with regard to dissolved oxygen level (DO). Therefore, in this work, chemostat cultures were performed to investigate the cell growth, metabolism and regulation of the AOX1 promoter (pAOX1) regarding co-feeding rate of optimized methanol/sorbitol mixture (methanol fraction 0.60 C-mol/C-mol) using a P. pastoris Mut+/pAOX1-lacZ strain. The oxygen transfer rates (OTR) in bioreactor were kept in the range of typical values of large bioreactor, i.e., 4–8 g/(L h) if DO equals 30 % saturation or 5–10 g/(L h) if DO nears zero. For DO >0, an increase of the carbon fed led to an increase of pAOX1 induction. By contrast, when dissolved oxygen was completely depleted, methanol accumulated, causing a 30 % decrease of pAOX1 induction. However, this decrease is more likely to be lined to methanol accumulation than to low level of dissolved oxygen (<4 % DO). Methanol/sorbitol co-feeding allowed cells to adapt to oxygen transient limitations that often occur at industrial scale with reduced effect on pAOX1 induction. The optimal feeding rate tested here was 6.6 mmol C (DCW h)?1 at an OTR of 8.28 g O2(L h)?1 with over fivefold pAOX1 induction (probably directly associated with target protein productivity) compared with previous work.  相似文献

Wetland ecosystems in agricultural areas often become progressively more isolated from main water bodies. Stagnation favors the accumulation of organic matter as the supply of electron acceptors with water renewal is limited. In this context it is expected that nitrogen recycling prevails over nitrogen dissipation. To test this hypothesis, denitrification rates, fluxes of dissolved oxygen (SOD), inorganic carbon (DIC) and nitrogen and sediment features were measured in winter and summer 2007 on 22 shallow riverine wetlands in the Po River Plain (Northern Italy). Fluxes were determined from incubations of intact cores by measurement of concentration changes or isotope pairing in the case of denitrification. Sampled sites were eutrophic to hypertrophic; 10 were connected and 12 were isolated from the adjacent rivers, resulting in large differences in nitrate concentrations in the water column (from <5 to 1,133 μM). Benthic metabolism and denitrification rates were investigated by two overarching factors: season and hydrological connectivity. SOD and DIC fluxes resulted in respiratory quotients greater than one at most sampling sites. Sediment respiration was coupled to both ammonium efflux, which increased from winter to summer, and nitrate consumption, with higher rates in river-connected wetlands. Denitrification rates measured in river-connected wetlands (35–1,888 μmol N m?2 h?1) were up to two orders of magnitude higher than rates measured in isolated wetlands (2–231 μmol N m?2 h?1), suggesting a strong regulation of the process by nitrate availability. These rates were also significantly higher in summer (9–1,888 μmol N m?2 h?1) than in winter (2–365 μmol N m?2 h?1). Denitrification supported by water column nitrate (DW) accounted for 60–100% of total denitrification (Dtot); denitrification coupled to nitrification (DN) was probably controlled by limited oxygen availability within sediments. Denitrification efficiency, calculated as the ratio between N removal via denitrification and N regeneration, and the relative role of denitrification for organic matter oxidation, were high in connected wetlands but not in isolated sites. This study confirms the importance of restoring hydraulic connectivity of riverine wetlands for the maintenance of important biogeochemical functions such as nitrogen removal via denitrification.  相似文献

Over the past three decades, Narragansett Bay has undergone various ecological changes, including significant decreases in water column chlorophyll a concentrations, benthic oxygen uptake, and benthic nutrient regeneration rates. To add to this portrait of change, we measured the net flux of N2 across the sediment–water interface over an annual cycle using the N2/Ar technique at seven sites in the bay for comparison with measurements made decades ago. Net denitrification rates ranged from about 10–90 μmol N2–N m?2 h?1 over the year. Denitrification rates were not significantly different among sites and had no clear correlation with temperature. Net nitrogen fixation (?5 to ?650 μmol N2–N m?2 h?1) was measured at three sites and only observed in summer (June–August). Neither denitrification nor nitrogen fixation exhibited a consistent relationship with sediment oxygen demand or with fluxes of nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, total dissolved inorganic nitrogen, or dissolved inorganic phosphate across all stations. In contrast to the mid-bay historical site where denitrification rates have declined, denitrification rates in the Providence River Estuary have not changed significantly over the past 30 years.  相似文献
