Summary Patterns of geographic variation in nine morphological characters of adult muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are investigated by multiple regression and canonical correlation analysis. Three variables describing the annual precipitation regimen account for 16 to 33% of the variance in each of the skeletal measurements. Highly variable precipitation patterns result in low rates of germination and survivorship for preferred aquatic food plants which in turn reduces average total food availability for muskrats. In large individuals nutritive demands may exceed supply, thus selection favors smaller body size in areas of low food availability.After removing the variation attributable to three precipitation variables, the residual variation in the morphological variables is exposed to canonical correlation analysis with a set of 10 environmental and geographic variables. A canonical variate loaded for climatic seasonality accounts for 60% of the variance in a canonical variate of the morphological residuals which load as a general body size variate. It is argued that seasonality is a major factor selecting for large body size in muskrats and other organisms. During seasonal periods of resource abundance natural selection favors individuals with rapid growth to a large size, while concurrently enhancing survivorship through oncoming periods of resource shortage.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in an animal's morphology, physiology, and behavior are considered to be an adaptive strategy for survival and reproductive success. In the present study, we examined body weight and several behavioral, physiological, hormonal, and biochemical markers in seasonally acclimatized Brandt's voles (Microtus brandti) to test our hypothesis that Brandt's voles can decrease energy intake associated with decrease in body weight, body fat content, serum leptin level, and increasing thermogenesis in winter conditions. We found that the body weight of Brandt's voles was lowest in winter (December to February) and highest in spring and early summer (May to June). This seasonal variation in body weight was associated with changes in other markers examined. For example, the winter decrease in body weight was accompanied by increased energy intake and enhanced nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) as well as by decreased body fat mass and reduced levels of circulating leptin. Further, circulating levels of leptin were positively correlated with body weight and body fat mass, and negatively correlated with energy intake and uncoupling protein 1 contents. Together, these data do not support our hypothesis and suggest that leptin may be involved in this process and serve as a starvation signal in Brandt's voles.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of two endophytic bacterial elicitors (Pseudomonas sp. and Enterobacter sp.) on the production of alkaloids in protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) of Pinellia ternata Breit. Both bacterial strains increased the growth rate of P. ternata PLBs. Pseudomonas sp. promoted the differentiation of the PLBs, whereas Enterobacter sp. inhibited PLB differentiation. The bacterial strains increased guanosine production in PLBs by 9–166%, inosine production by 2–33%, and trigonelline production by 114–1140% compared to the control. For Pseudomonas sp., guanosine and trigonelline production was greater when bacterial extracts were added to the PLB suspension cultures rather than living cells (co-culture treatment). Inosine production was similar in both the bacterial extract and co-culture treatments. For the Enterobacter sp., guanosine, inosine, and trigonelline production tended to be greatest when living cells were added to the PLB suspension cultures rather than bacterial extracts. These results suggest that Pseudomonas sp. and Enterobacter sp. could increase alkaloid yield from P. ternata under field or tissue culture conditions. We also observed that Pseudomonas sp. and Enterobacter sp. produced some of the same alkaloids as their host plants. Additional study needs to be done to determine if these endophytic bacteria could be used to produce alkaloids in the fermentation industry.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that immersion hypothermia enhances the diving capabilities of adult and juvenile muskrats by reducing rates of oxygen consumption (V O2). Declines in abdominal body temperature (T(b)) comparable to those observed in nature (0.5-3.5 degrees C) were induced by pre-chilling animals in 6 degrees C water. Pre-chilling did not reduce diving V O2 of any animal tested in 10 degrees C or 30 degrees C water, irrespective of the nature of the dive. Most behavioural indices of dive performance, including average and cumulative dive times, were unaffected by T(b) reduction in adults, but depressed in hypothermic juveniles (200-400 g). Hypothermia reduced diving heart rate only on short (<25s) dives (16% reduction, P=0.01), but did not affect the temporal onset of diving bradycardia. Post-immersion V O2 was higher for pre-chilled than for normothermic muskrats, but the difference became insignificant on longer (>90 s) dives. Our findings suggest that the mild hypothermia experienced by muskrats in nature has minimal effect on diving and post-immersion metabolic costs, and thus has little impact on the dive performance of this northern semi-aquatic mammal.  相似文献

Summary The reduction of fumarate, which is a characteristic feature of anoxic catabolism of some invertebrates, was investigated in mitochondria or mitochondrial fragments prepared from the body wall musculature of the lug-wormArenicola marina (Annelida, Polychaeta).A coupling of the reduction of fumarate to succinate to the oxidation of NADH was demonstrated.The pathway of hydrogen transfer from NADH to fumarate was studied by using specific inhibitors of the respiratory chain. From the results it is concluded that parts of the respiratory chain are involved.During anaerobiosis mitochondria formed succinate at a high rate from malate which had been added as substrate. The formation of succinate is coupled to oxidative phosphorylation. Work on the exceptionally well-preserved, rapidly accumulating Bath Cliff Section, Barbados and supplementary Deep Sea Drilling Project samples, has revealed the evolutionary origins of three stratigraphically useful species in theCryptoprora ornata Zone straddling the Eocene/Oligocene boundary and demonstrated the origin of the genusCyclampterium. Elucidation of the origin ofCyclampterium milowi necessitates a revision of the generaLophocyrtis andCyclampterium.Lophocyrtis (Lophocyrtis)jacchia is the ancestor ofL. (Cyclampterium)hadra, the earliest member in the subgenusCyclampterium which comprises the anagenetic lineage leading fromL. (C.)hadra toL. (C.)neatum. The monotypic subgenusSciadiopeplus branches off from an early member in theCyclampterium lineage. The new speciesL. (L.)exitelus andL. (S.)oberhaensliae terminate the subgeneraLophocyrtis andSciadiopeplus, respectively. During the investigation it also became clear that morphotypes resembling earlyL. (C.)milowi could be found in mid and high latitude assemblages in the late Early and late Middle Eocene. The origin of one these morphotypes was also traced toL. (Lophocyrtis)jacchia giving rise to the new subgenusParalampterium. This lineage includes the new speciesL. (Paralampterium)dumitricai and two species questionably assigned to it,L. To understand the biogeography of truffle-like fungi, DNA sequences were analysed from representative taxa of Hysterangiales. Multigene phylogenies and the results of ancestral area reconstructions are consistent with the hypothesis of an Australian, or eastern Gondwanan, origin of Hysterangiales with subsequent range expansions to the Northern Hemisphere. However, neither Northern Hemisphere nor Southern Hemisphere taxa formed a monophyletic group, which is in conflict with a strictly vicariant scenario. Therefore, the occurrence and importance of long-distance dispersal could not be rejected. Although a pre-Gondwanan origin of Hysterangiales remains as a possibility, this hypothesis requires that Hysterangiales exist prior to the origin of the currently recognized ectomycorrhizal plants, as well as the arrival of mycophagous animals in Australia. This also requires that a basal paraphyletic assemblage represents parallel evolution of the ectomycorrhizal symbiosis, or that Hysterangiales was mycorrhizal with members of the extinct flora of Gondwana. Regardless, models for both ancient and more recent origins of Hysterangiales are consistent with truffle-like fungi being capable of transoceanic dispersal.  相似文献

Summary The mutant fs(1) 1163 of Drosophila melanogaster, which was isolated by Gans et al. (1975) is a recessive homozygous female sterile at 18°C and a dominant female — sterile at 29°C. We reported previously that there are reduced quantities of the largest of the three yolk polypeptides in Drosophila melanogaster in the haemolymph and eggs of this mutant at 29°C (Bownes and Hames 1978 a). In this paper we show that the yolk protein defect maps within approximately 2.5 recombination units of the female sterility at 21±2.5 map units on the X-chromosome. The temperature-sensitive period of the yolk protein defect is after emergence. In vitro labelling of fs(1) 1163 ovaries and fat bodies showed that they were able to synthesise yolk polypeptide 1. Interestingly, studies on the proteins present in the various tissues indicate that the fat body tends to accumulate all three yolk polypeptides in the mutant. This phenotype is partially co-dominant in that an effect is seen in heterozygotes as well as homozygotes and is enhanced by increased temperature. This mutant could therefore have a defect (a) in the structural gene for yolk polypeptide 1, (b) in the processing and secretion enzyme systems; (c) in the fat body or all tissues leading to altered secretion properties.Mutants like fs(1) 1163 which alter specific steps in vitellogenesis should be of value for analysing the genetic and biochemical control of the synthesis, transport and sequestering of the yolk polypeptides during oogenesis.  相似文献

Past treatments of the sleeper shark genus Somniosus generally recognize three species: S. microcephalus, S. pacificus, and S. rostratus. Based on morphometrics and meristics, we conclude that this genus includes two subgenera (Somniosus and Rhinoscymnus) and five species. Subgenus Somniosus differs from Rhinoscymnus by being much larger when adult and in having more numerous tooth rows in the lower jaw, hooklike rather than leaf-shaped dermal denticles, more numerous spiral valve and vertebral counts, and a poorly calcified vertebral column. Subgenus Somniosus includes S. (Somniosus) microcephalus and S. (S.) pacificus of the Northern Hemisphere and S. (S.) antarcticus of the Southern Hemisphere. Although Somniosus antarcticus has been synonymized with S. microcephalus and identified as S. pacificus in past literature, it differs from S. microcephalus in having a shorter interdorsal space, a more posterior first dorsal fin, lower dorsal fins, more numerous tooth rows in the lower jaw, more numerous spiral valve counts, and fewer precaudal vertebrae. Somniosus antarcticus also differs from S. pacificus by having a shorter prebranchial length, lower dorsal fins, more numerous spiral valve counts, and slightly more precaudal vertebrae. Subgenus Rhinoscymnus includes S. (Rhinoscymnus) rostratus from the eastern North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea (senior synonym of S. bauchotae) and S. (R.) longus from the western Pacific Ocean. Somniosus longus has been synonymized with S. rostratus, but differs in having a relatively longer second dorsal fin, a slightly larger eye, more lower tooth rows, and slightly higher spiral valve counts. Both Somniosus (Somniosus) antarcticus and S. (Rhinoscymnus) longus from the Pacific Ocean were redescribed. We quantified seasonal variation in body composition and morphology of adult muskrats ( Ondatra zibethicus ) inhabiting freshwater marsh environments in central Saskatchewan, Canada. The study areas were characterized by long and cold winters extending over six months during which muskrats were restricted to foraging under ice. A total of 162 adult muskrats were collected during nine sampling periods across the year. The large accumulation of fat reserves (16% of body mass) during winter and the concurrent decline in protein mass suggested a reduced maintenance requirement associated with the presence of energy-rich food resources. Dietary fibre content increased significantly during mid-summer and was manifested by changes in gut morphology. Mobilization of fat reserves during summer months by both sexes reflected high energetic demands for reproduction. Males depleted fat reserves soon after spring break-up, while near-exhaustion of fat reserves in females occurred 4–6 weeks later, during lactation. Pregnant females contained significantly greater fat and protein reserves compared to non-pregnant and lactating females. The dynamics of body reserves in muskrats should be viewed as an integral part of the sex-specific life-history traits of this important herbivore species of marsh environments.  相似文献

Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) chimalapasensis n. sp. (Eoacanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) is described from the intestine of Awaous banana (Valenciennes) (Pisces: Gobiidae) collected in the Río Negro, a tributary in the upper Río Coatzacoalcos basin, Santa María Chimalapa, Oaxaca State, Mexico. It is the third species of Neoechinorhynchus Stiles & Hassall, 1905 described from Mexican freshwater fishes, although 36 other species are known from freshwater fishes in the Americas. Like four other species of Neoechinorhynchus from freshwater fishes in North America and Mexico, N. (N.) limi Muzzall & Buckner, 1982, (N.) rutili (Müller, 1780) Stiles & Hassall, 1905, N. (N.) salmonis Ching, 1984 and N. (N.) roseus Salgado-Maldonado, 1978, males and females of the new species are less than 20 mm in length, lack conspicuous sexual dimorphism in size, have a small proboscis of about 0.1 mm in length with the largest hooks being the anteriormost, about 30–90 μm in length and of equal size, and have subequal lemnisci, larger than the proboscis receptacle but still relatively short and, in males, generally restricted to a position considerably anterior to the testes. The new species is closest to N. (N.) roseus, but it is distinguished from it by having: (1) a slightly larger cylindrical proboscis with almost parallel sides versus a globular proboscis with a rounded tip which is shorter and somewhat wider in N. (N.) roseus; (2) smaller but robust anterior proboscis hooks that do not reach the equatorial level or extend beyond the hooks of the middle circle as in N. (N.) roseus; and (3) the female gonopore situated ventrally subterminal, as opposed to being a significant distance anteriorly to the posterior extremity in N. (N.) roseus.  相似文献

This study examined predation by the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, within intertidal Spartina alterniflora (Loisel) marshes of Dauphin Island, Alabama. Species and size preferences displayed by the predator when foraging within the marsh were investigated using nektonic, epifaunal, and infaunal prey populations including Fundulus similis Baird and Girard, Littorina irrorata Say, and Geukensia demissa Dillwyn.

Short-term field experiments involving the use of predator inclusion cages, in which the relative abundances of all prey species and the density of macrophyte vegetation were manipulated, indicated that mean mortality differed significantly among species. Blue crabs exhibited a distinct species preference for Littorina, and to a lesser extent, for Fundulus. However, the predator rarely choses infaunal individuals. Within predator inclusion cages, size selection by the crabs among three size classes of each prey was evident for Littorina and Fundulus but not for Geukensia. Blue crabs tended to select intermediate-sized snails and large fish while not exhibiting a size preference for infaunal bivalves.

In the marsh, mean percentage of the Littorina population within the 14–18 mm size class exhibited an increased mortality as compared to two other size classes, which was negatively correlated with increasing tidal height. Such a relationship may have been due to a decreasing gradient of crab predation associated with increasing tidal height. Geukensia size class distributions showed little evidence of differences along the tidal height gradient. No data are available for Fundulus, a mobile species which would not experience such differential predation along a marsh gradient.

In comparing crab predation patterns among prey species, it is apparent that Callinectes utilizes prey species differentially. Such differential utilization may be based on optimization of energy yield and minimization of energy expenditure. Thus, the preference of blue crabs for nektonic and epifaunal prey is hypothesized to be the result of a smaller energy expediture as a result of the crab's visual evaluation of these prey. Infaunal prey species (e.g., Geukensia) require a greater energy investment because of the necessity of excavating the prey item. Such prey also allow little selection by size because of being cryptic.  相似文献

Summary The possible allelic relationship between dasF (dnaA suppressor) and sdrA/rnh (stable DNA replication/RNase H) mutations was examined. dasF mutations could not only suppress various dnaA(ts) mutations, but also the insertional inactivation of the dnaA gene or deletion of the oriC sequence, as could sdrA mutations. dasF mutants were found to exhibit the stable DNA replication phenotype, and the sensitivity to rich media, of sdrA mutants. The dasF and sdrA mutations were mapped very closely between metD and proA on the E. coli genetic map. The mutations were recessive to the wild-type allele for all the above phenotypes. We examined the desert-dwelling grasshopper, Calliptamus barbarus, to determine whether it used evaporative cooling, and if differences existed in the use of evaporative cooling between the small males and larger females. Male C. barbarus are the smallest grasshoppers tested for their use of evaporative cooling.
2. 2. Calliptamus barbarus use evaporative cooling at high ambient temperatures to keep their body temperature below lethal levels. This has been shown in insects such as cicadas, bees and other grasshoppers. Maximal water loss rates for C. barbarus are similar (8–10% of body mass per hour) to those of other grasshoppers.
3. 3. Male C. barbarus weigh 370 mg on average, and are 20% of the females' mass. At low ambient temperatures males evaporated 13.31 ± 1.14 mg water/h (n = 12), a similar rate to that in females, who evaporated 17.53 ± 2.03 mg water/h (n = 29), but a considerably greater fraction of body mass per unit time. At high ambient temperatures, the males lost less in absolute terms, but a similar amount relative to body mass. The differences are partially accounted for by scaling effects, but for the most part, the reasons for these differences are unclear. They may be linked to differences in ventilatory patterns between males and females or differences in cuticular permeability, the two major pathways of water loss in insects.

Sections of apothecia were used to study the internal morphology of ascospores in the largest monophyletic clade within Parmeliaceae composed of Xanthoparmelia and related genera. The results were compared with fertile representative species of most other parmelioid clades. All the Xanthoparmelia species had spores with a single smooth vacuole, which was peanut-shaped, with different degrees of constriction in the equatorial plane. This differs from the ellipsoid vacuole of other parmelioids. In the Xanthoparmelia clade, sexual reproduction seems much more common than in other parmelioids. Thus, we suggest that the presence of this unique spore morphology might contribute to the evolutionary success of this monophyletic group. Further, the discovery of this useful ascospore character demonstrates that detailed ascospore morphological studies significantly enhance molecular phylogenetic analyses. Ascospore features may be more taxonomically significant in Parmeliaceae than hitherto considered.  相似文献
