Effects of different conditions of environmental lighting on the appearance of the muricidal behaviour in male Wistar rats have been studied. The animals were kept under different conditions of environmental lighting: 1) natural day light alternated with the dark of the night; 2) sodium, continuous light emitted by a sodium steam lamp; 3) neon, continuous light emitted by fluorescent neon tubes. The continuous sodium steam light increased the percentage of animals becoming muricide when compared to animals bred in a natural environment with a normal succession of day-night lighting. On the contrary, this percentage decreased if the rats of the same group are exposed to continuous light emitted by fluorescent neon tubes. As the exposure of rats to an environment under continuous light causes a reduction of the cerebral content of serotonin, the muricidal behaviour provoked in naturally non-muricide rats by this type of lighting could be related to this depletion.  相似文献

The aim of this research is to study the effects of a diet almost devoid of tryptophan, which is given by a feeding with precooked yellow corn meal (corn mush), on the alterations of the estrous cycle of animals in several conditions of environmental lighting. Indeed, it is known that cerebral serotonin influences the releasing of LH and consequently the ovulation. The different types of environmental lighting are: 1) Natural (alternating Day-Night = L/D). 2) Continuous dark (D/D). 3) Continuous light by sodium steams (L/L sodium). 4) Continuous light by fluorescent neon tubes (L/L neon). The muricide behaviour is studied by comparison rat-mouse. The feeding with precooked yellow corn meal (diet lacking of tryptophan) unchains in the 100% of the observations the CEA (Constant Estrous Anovulatory), and significantly shrinks the estral cycle in the female Wistar Rat in several conditions of environmental lighting.  相似文献

The aim of this research is to observe if the lack of cerebral serotonin, obtained by a diet almost devoid of tryptophan (precooked yellow corn meal) is able to trigger the muricide behaviour in male Rats naturally non-muricide. To determine the tryptophan content in the food used and in 4 types of selected maize flour (Zea mays: indurata, indentata, opaque/2 and synt. marano), 3 different methods have been used (ion-exchange chromatography, spectrofluorometry, spectrophotometry). The muricide behaviour, or the interspecific attack, has been tested by comparison Rat-Mouse. The results show that the feeding with a diet "short term" (4 days), composed of precooked corn meal, with a very low content of tryptophan, induces the appearance of muricide or aggressive behaviour towards the Mouse in more than half of the Wistar Rats, bred in a room constantly lighted by sodium steam light. The appearance of the above-mentioned behaviour is connected with the decrease in cerebral serotonin.  相似文献

The human and murine diurnal rhythms are out of phase. Consequently in conventionally-lit mouse houses the mice's deep sleep is often disrupted, the daily welfare monitoring of the mice is limited by their inactivity, and scientific data obtained from the mice model the sleeping rather than awake human. Sodium light is bichromatic, with both wavelengths being in the human visual field but at the margin of murine vision. We report here that sodium lamps can be used to light mouse houses to a level that is comfortable for humans, but still sufficiently dull to permit nocturnal behaviour in mice. The response of mice to sodium light was initially monitored by recording the locomotory activity of BALB/c mice. The movement of mice in their cages greatly increased at the start of the nocturnal phase. Alterations in the white light cycle caused an acute change in the onset of nocturnal behaviour. In contrast, sodium light did not suppress the onset of nocturnal locomotory behaviour, even though the lighting was sufficiently bright for humans to read without light adaptation. The sodium lighting was then used to observe the nocturnal behaviour of over 150 mice of various strains, for over 1.5 years. Mice were invariably awake and alert during the nocturnal/sodium light phase. All exhibited high locomotory activity, except for nursing mothers. Some tasks, such as cage cleaning and minor surgery, were more easily done under white than sodium lighting. We therefore adjusted the timing of the light cycles to provide white light in the morning and sodium light (nocturnal phase) in the afternoon. This provided for easy operation of the mouse house, while yielding both animal welfare and scientific advantages.  相似文献

Summary The effects of light spectral quality on the growth of in vitro nodal cuttings of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars Norland, Superior, Kennebec, and Denali were examined. The different light spectra were provided by Vita-Lite fluorescent (VF) (a white light control), blue fluorescent (BF), red fluorescent (RF), low-pressure sodium (LPS), and a combination of low-pressure sodium plus cool-white fluorescent lamps (LPS/CWF). For all cultivars, stem lengths after 4 wk were longest under LPS, followed by RF, LPS/CWF, VF, and BF (in descending order). Microscopic studies revealed that cells were shortest when cultured in BF or VF environments, and were longest in RF or LPS lamp environments. The highest number of axillary branches occurred on plantlets grown with LPS or LPS/CWF, whereas the lowest number occurred with BF. No leaf or stem edema (callus or gall-like growths) occurred with LPS or LPS/CWF lighting, and no edema occurred on cv. Norland plantlets, regardless of lighting. Results suggest that shoot morphologic development of in vitro grown potato plants can be controlled by controlling irradiant spectral quality.  相似文献

With the widespread adoption of electrical lighting during the 20th century, human and nonhuman animals became exposed to high levels of light at night for the first time in evolutionary history. This divergence from the natural environment may have significant implications for certain ecological niches because of the important influence light exerts on the circadian system. For example, circadian disruption and nighttime light exposure are linked to changes in immune function. The majority of studies investigating the effects of light exposure and circadian disruption on the immune system use nocturnal rodents. In diurnal species, many hormones and immune parameters vary with secretion patterns 180° out of phase to those of nocturnal rodents. Thus, the authors investigated the effects of nighttime light exposure on immunocompetence in diurnal Nile grass rats (Arvicanthis niloticus). Rats were housed in either standard 14-h light (L):10-h dark (D) cycles with L ~150 lux and D 0 lux or dim light at night (dLAN) cycles of LD 14:10 with L ~150 lux and D 5 lux for 3 wks, then tested for plasma bactericidal capacity, as well as humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. Rats exposed to dLAN showed increased delayed-type hypersensitivity pinna swelling, which is consistent with enhanced cell-mediated immune function. dLAN rats similarly showed increased antibody production following inoculation with keyhole lymphocyte hemocyanin (KLH) and increased bactericidal capacity. Daytime corticosterone concentrations were elevated in grass rats exposed to nighttime dim light, which may have influenced immunological measures. Overall, these results indicate nighttime light affects immune parameters in a diurnal rodent.  相似文献

During its passage through the epididymis, the gamete undergoes a process of "maturation" leading to the acquisition of its fertilizing ability. The epididymis displays regional variations in the morphology and metabolic properties of its epithelium which are relevant for the progressive development of mature sperm characteristics. The epididymis has spontaneous peristaltic contractions and receives sympathetic innervation that is modulated by melatonin, a hormone synthesized and released by the pineal gland. Constant lighting disrupts melatonin synthesis and secretion. We have studied the effect of constant light on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; EC 1.1.1.27) and its isozyme C4 activities and protein content in whole epididymis, epididymal tissue and in spermatozoa from caput and cauda segments. Animals were exposed from birth to an illumination schedule of 14 h light:10 h dark (group L:D). At 60 days of age one group of animals was submitted to constant light over 50 days (group L:L). In order to test the fertilizing ability, the rats of each group were mated with soliciting estrous females. The percentage of pregnancies in females mated with males maintained in L:L was remarkably lower than those in females mated with males maintained in the L:D photoperiod (44% and 88% respectively). Constant light increased protein concentration and LDH activity in caput as well as in cauda of total epididymis. On the contrary, in epididymal tissue, the protein content decreased in both epididymal sections compared with controls. When enzymatic activity was expressed in Units per spermatozoa, constant light induced a significant reduction of total LDH and LDHC4 in caput and cauda spermatozoa while LDH activity of epididymal tissue was not affected. In spite of the decrease in LDH per sperm cell when rats were exposed to constant light, in total epididymis (epididymis tissue plus sperm cells content) and in spermatozoa, values of enzyme activities expressed per weight unit were higher than those of controls. This is explained by the increase in the amount of stored spermatozoa, both in caput and cauda, produced by exposure of animals to constant light. Our results confirm that in rats, chronic exposure to constant light promotes a reduction of fertilizing ability and indicates that continuous lighting reduces the total LDH and LDHC4 activities, possibly due to moderate aging of spermatozoa within the duct by lengthening of the sperm transit through the epididymis.  相似文献

Teleost fish are commonly used as model species in laboratory studies of behaviour and ecology. In comparison to other groups of vertebrates used routinely in such studies, however, relatively little attention has been paid to their environmental requirements from a welfare perspective. Fish naturally inhabit a wide variety of aquatic habitats that differ enormously in the range of light environments they provide, and light regime has enormous potential to affect behaviour. Yet the level and quality of illumination (in terms of intensity and wavelength spectrum) provided in experimental studies of fish behaviour is generally designed to maximize ease of recording by the observer. In addition, display or home aquaria provide illumination that maximizes the ‘viewing pleasure’ of the observer, and specialist lighting tubes are available to stimulate rapid plant growth and to ‘show off’ the colours of fish, rather than to provide ‘natural’ light environments. Here we present the results of three studies designed to examine the effects of light intensity, wavelength spectrum and their interactions on the behaviour of a model species commonly used in behavioural studies, the three‐spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus. Our aims are to determine whether unnatural light environments, generated by manipulating light intensity and wavelength spectrum, affect behaviour in ways that may lead to concern for the welfare of fish as research animals or pets.  相似文献

The effect of high pressure sodium vapor lamps and daylight-simulating fluorescent lights on the growth, hematology, and behavior of Sprague-Dawley rats has been investigated. Rats weaned under the sodium vapor lamps had slightly heavier adrenals than those exposed to the daylight lamps when the two lighting systems were equalized either for total irradiance or for scotopic illuminance. However, no differences were observed in the tail-flick response, hot plate response, or swimming endurance of rats housed under the two lighting conditions. No consistent differences were seen in the hemoglobin, red and white cell count, hematocrit, and mean cell volume between rats weaned under the high pressure sodium vapor lamps and daylight-simulating fluorescent lights.  相似文献

Propagation of artificial light at night (ALAN) in the environment is now known to have non negligible consequences on fauna, flora and human health. These consequences depend on light levels and their spectral power distributions, which in turn rely on the efficiency of various physical processes involved in the radiative transfer of this light into the atmosphere and its interactions with the built and natural environment. ALAN can affect the living organisms by direct lighting and indirect lighting (scattered by the sky and clouds and/or reflected by local surfaces). This paper mainly focuses on the behaviour of the indirect light scattered under clear sky conditions. Various interaction processes between anthropogenic light sources and the natural environment are discussed. This work mostly relies on a sensitivity analysis conducted with the light pollution radiative transfer model, Illumina (Aubé et al. 2005 Light pollution modelling and detection in a heterogeneous environment: toward a night-time aerosol optical depth retrieval method. In Proc. SPIE 2005, vol. 5890, San Diego, California, USA). More specifically, the impact of (i) the molecular and aerosol scattering and absorption, (ii) the second order of scattering, (iii) the topography and obstacle blocking, (iv) the ground reflectance and (v) the spectrum of light devices and their angular emission functions are examined. This analysis considers different behaviour as a function of the distance from the city centre, along with different zenith viewing angles in the principal plane.  相似文献

The object of the present paper was to examine the influence of light intensity on the behaviour of calves. For this purpose, 20 calves of both sexes and of the breeds German Friesian, Simmental and their cross-breeds were kept in groups of 5 animals at 4 different levels of lighting: 2, 20, 100 or 130 lx. The behaviour of the animals was observed once a week by video. For each behaviour pattern and each light intensity, duration, frequency and daily rhythm were calculated. Furthermore, the behaviour sequences were examined. At 2 lx, the lowest level of lighting, the longest duration and most frequent phases of resting behaviour were noted. The daily rhythm of resting behaviour was more distinct in the better-lighted stable than in that with less lighting.Differences also occurred in feeding behaviour, which lasted longer at the higher light intensity. The influence of the light was clearest on social behaviour, and mainly on playing behaviour. The duration and frequency of play-fighting and solitary play-running increased with higher light intensity.Licking of objects was also significantly influenced by the level of lighting. It lasted longest at 130 lx and was shortest at 2 lx.Examination of the behaviour sequences showed that grooming and licking of objects were present in the majority of sequences. Apart from their functions, these activities are also of importance as displacement or redirected activities. The differences in the behaviour due to different lighting could be the result of worse visual ability at the lower light intensities.  相似文献

Effects of 16 (16 light:8 dark) and 8 (8L:16D) h of daily light were compared with continuous light (24L:0D) exposure on prolactin (PRL) concentrations in serum of prepubertal bulls. Concentrations of PRL in serum were 2 to 3 fold greater in bulls exposed to 24L:0D or 16L:8D as compared with 8L:16D. However, PRL concentrations attained a maximum approximately 3 weeks later in calves exposed to 24L:0D than in calves given 16L:8D. Continuous low intensity (11 to 16 lux) lighting supplemented with 16 or 8 h of high intensity (449 to 618 lux) light per day increased PRL concentrations in serum of prepubertal bulls 1.5 to 2.5 fold relative to 8L:16D (470 lux). We found that relative to 8L:16D, 1) photoperiods of 16 or 24 h of light per day increased serum concentrations of PRL in prepubertal bulls; however, the time required to achieve maximum PRL concentrations was longer in animals exposed to 24L:0D, 2) continuous low intensity lighting supplemented with 16 or 8 h of high intensity daily light also increased concentrations of PRL in serum.  相似文献

Mating in the black soldier fly (BSF) is a visually mediated behaviour that under natural conditions occurs in full sunlight. Artificial light conditions promoting mating by BSF were designed based on the spectral characteristics of the compound eye retina. Electrophysiological measurements revealed that BSF ommatidia contained UV-, blue- and green-sensitive photoreceptor cells, allowing trichromatic vision. An illumination system for indoor breeding based on UV, blue and green LEDs was designed and its efficiency was compared with illumination by fluorescent tubes which have been successfully used to sustain a BSF colony for five years. Illumination by LEDs and the fluorescent tubes yielded equal numbers of egg clutches, however, the LED illumination resulted in significantly more larvae. The possibilities to optimize the current LED illumination system to better approximate the skylight illuminant and potentially optimize the larval yield are discussed.  相似文献

Organisms have evolved under stable natural lighting regimes, employing cues from these to govern key ecological processes. However, the extent and density of artificial lighting within the environment has increased recently, causing widespread alteration of these regimes. Indeed, night-time electric lighting is known significantly to disrupt phenology, behaviour, and reproductive success, and thence community composition and ecosystem functioning. Until now, most attention has focussed on effects of the occurrence, timing, and spectral composition of artificial lighting. Little considered is that many types of lamp do not produce a constant stream of light but a series of pulses. This flickering light has been shown to have detrimental effects in humans and other species. Whether a species is likely to be affected will largely be determined by its visual temporal resolution, measured as the critical fusion frequency. That is the frequency at which a series of light pulses are perceived as a constant stream. Here we use the largest collation to date of critical fusion frequencies, across a broad range of taxa, to demonstrate that a significant proportion of species can detect such flicker in widely used lamps. Flickering artificial light thus has marked potential to produce ecological effects that have not previously been considered.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the effects of light on both the locomotion of intact animals and the swim motor program expressed by isolated brains in the gastropod Melibe leonina. Spontaneous locomotion (crawling and swimming) was examined during a period of natural lighting (L:D) to establish normal behavior, and then under two different light regimes: constant darkness (D:D) and constant light (L:L). In L:D, there was significantly more locomotor activity at night than during the day and this pattern continued in D:D. However, in L:L, activity was substantially reduced at all times. Using isolated brain preparations, we further demonstrated that the swim motor program was rapidly inhibited by light, and that this inhibition was mediated by the eyes. These results indicate that M. leonina displays a nocturnal activity pattern, and that light has a strong inhibitory effect on locomotion in the intact animal and on the swim motor program expressed by the isolated brain.  相似文献

The behavioral response of Biomphalaria straminea to light was evaluated in terms of location of the snail in a Y-shaped aquarium in a situation of selection and of the rate (cm/hour) and direction of locomotion under homogeneous (vertical) or differential (horizontal) lighting upon only one arm of the aquarium. The light source consisted of daylight fluorescent lamps with a spectrum close to that of natural light, with illumination varying from 2.8 to 350 lux. Analysis of the data showed that all animals, whether in groups or isolated, were attracted to light, although the time needed to approach the light source was 50% shorter for the former than for the latter. The rate of locomotion of B. straminea was 35% higher than that observed in B. glabrata and 51% higher than that observed in B. tenagophila studied under similar conditions. The results are discussed in terms of social factors and geographical distribution of the three species.  相似文献
