A bundle of optical fibres and a photometer were used to measure light transmission through bud scales of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.). Percentage transmission increases with wavelength from none below 480 nm to 3% the far-red. Transmission of all wavebands measured was lowest in late summer and winter and highest in the autumn and spring. For most of the year in pine, and only from July to September in spruce, there is a depression of red light (660–670 nm) transmission. This affects the ratio of 660/730 nm light penetrating the apical domes. This ratio is lowest in July and August, at the time of initiation of female strobili. The seasonal variation in transmission of light by bud scales is discussed in relation to the possible consequences for the control of flowering.  相似文献

The clongation of the first internode of fully greenVigna sinensis L. is inhibited by white light (W). This inhibition is fluence-rate dependent between 0 and 70 Wm–2. The kinetics of elongation rate in the light after darkness were investigated with linear displacement transducers. The internode elongation rate does not exhibit any endogenous rhythm. A rapid inhibition occurs during the first 2 or 3 h after the onset of light, and a second type of inhibition (slow reaction) increases from the beginning to the 8th hour of light. The rapid inhibition is not fluence-rate dependent between 20 and 70 Wm–2, but the slow reaction is. There is no rapid inhibition in a low fluence rate white light to high fluence rate white light transition, only the slow reaction is observed. The responses to different wavebands, i.e., blue light (B), yellow and green light (YG), and red light (R), are the same for the two inhibition reactions. Each waveband used separately does not reproduce the full effect observed in W. Results show a stimulation with B, a greater inhibition activity with YG than with R, and a synergistic action of B and R which when given together lead to an inhibition similar to that obtained in W. Plants returned from the light to darkness progressively recover a high elongation rate without any latent period. The female size advantage hypothesis predicts that the allocation ratio of female: male reproductive effort should increase with plant size (total reproductive effort). A male height advantage hypothesis has also been proposed, based on the supposed greater advantage of height to male reproductive success in wind-pollinated plants. These ideas were tested with data for wind-pollinated, monoecious trees and shrubs which exhibit a suitably large range of sizes. Number of male inflorescences increased faster with size than did number of female inflorescences in 2 of 9 species; in the remaining 7 species there was no significant difference. The male:female ratio of inflorescence numbers increased with height in 4 of 7 species and did not change significantly in the remaining 3 species, as shown by regression. Height and size are highly correlated and so their effects could not be distinguished. The fact that many conifers place the female cones uppermost in the crown suggests that size and not height favors increased allocation to male function, as does well-established theory connecting the existence of male versus female size advantage to pollen and seed dispersal chacteristics. Regression analysis of the relation between male and female reproductive effort should be done by reduced major axis regression; ordinary least squares regression underestimates slopes; in this study opposite conclusions could be drawn from ordinary least squares and reduced major axis regressions.  相似文献

We have investigated stem turnover strategy for Lindera umbellata, an understory shrub that sprouts from its rootstock under natural conditions to replace constituent stems, on the basis of the hypothesis that the multiple-stemmed form of woody species is an adaptation enabling efficient reproduction in high-stress environments. We tested the hypothesis that the timing of stem replacement maximizes sexual reproduction for the shrub. We developed a model for the time of optimum replacement of a stem by a daughter stem which maximizes the sexual reproduction of a shrub and tested the model using L. umbellata growing in the field. From the model, the optimum time of replacement of a stem with a daughter stem is when cumulative sexual reproduction per unit time for the stem is maximum. In practice, this will be the last age (t opt) at which annual sexual reproduction in a stem can potentially exceed cumulative sexual reproduction per unit time for the stem. Half of the stems died at almost t opt and had sexually mature daughter stems at that time. Other stems, however, died at times more remote from t opt when daughter stems were sexually immature. It is thought that normal replacement of the latter stems was prevented by accidents such as breakage. We conclude that clumps of L. umbellata achieve efficient sexual reproduction by stem replacement at the optimum time, although accidents can, to some extent, determine when the stem actually dies.  相似文献

Diffusion coefficients for thirteen lipophilic organic compounds in reconstituted waxes of Fagus sylvatica L. and Picea abies (L.) Karst. were measured to characterise the transport properties of the cuticular waxes that form the transport-limiting barrier of plant cuticles. Desorption kinetics (relative amounts desorbed versus time) were asymptotic, but could be linearized up to 50% desorption by plotting relative amounts desorbed versus the square root of time. Diffusion coefficients calculated from the slopes of the linear regressions ranged from 10–22 to 10–17 m2·s–1 and decreased with increasing molecular size. This size dependency of diffusion coefficients was analysed, assuming an exponential dependence of the diffusion coefficients on molar volumes, which allowed cuticular transport properties to be related to the physical structure of the wax. Patterns of woody plants dispersal in a semi-arid nature reserve situated in Eastern Transvaal, South Africa, revealed that trees have spread from core areas and converted previously open grasslands to densely vegetated woodlands. These patterns were found in catchment areas of the gently undulating terrain which characterizes the region.Two plant communities dominated by Acacia senegal-Acacia tortilis and Euclea divinorum-Acacia nilotica were distinguished. Analysis of nearest-neighbour distances, dispersal patterns of seedlings and mature woody plants identified successional processes. These were manifested through intra and interspecific competition among the dominant tree species. Within each plant community, a transition of relative abundance was occurring namely, A. senegal became dominant in areas previously dominated by A. tortilis while E. divinorum was replacing previous A. nilotica dominance.Comparative assessment of the two plant communities was facilitated by the summary of competition and seedling dispersal indices in a multivariate analysis. Results indicated that tree species had characteristic dispersal strategies. Identification the patterns of woody plants establishment could advance the evaluation of successional dynamics and management of savannas in areas prone to bush encroachment.  相似文献

Current methods for estimating past climatic patterns from pollen data require that the vegetation be in dynamic equilibrium with the climate. Because climate varies continuously on all time scales, judgement about equilibrium conditions must be made separately for each frequency band (i.e. time scale) of climatic change. For equilibrium conditions to exist between vegetation and climatic changes at a particular time scale, the climatic response time of the vegetation must be small compared to the time scale of climatic variation to which it is responding. The time required for vegetation to respond completely to climatic forcing at a time scale of 104 yr is still unknown, but records of the vegetational response to climatic events of 500-to 1000-yr duration provide evidence for relatively short response times. Independent estimates for the possible patterns and timing of late-Quaternary climate changes suggest that much of the vegetational evidence previously interpreted as resulting from disequilibrium conditions can instead be interpreted as resulting from the individualistic response of plant taxa to the different regional patterns of temperature and precipitation change. The differences among taxa in their response to climate can lead a) to rates and direction of plant-population movements that differ among taxa and b) to fossil assemblages that differ from any modern assemblage. An example of late-Holocene vegetational change in southern Quebec illustrates how separate changes in summer and winter climates may explain the simultaneous expansion of spruce (Picea) populations southward and beech (Fagus) populations northward.  相似文献

Xylem structure and function is proposed to reflect an evolutionary balance between demands for efficient movement of water to the leaf canopy and resistance to cavitation during high xylem tension. Water use efficiency (WUE) affects this balance by altering the water cost of photosynthesis. Therefore species of greater WUE, such as C4 plants, should have altered xylem properties. To evaluate this hypothesis, we assessed the hydraulic and anatomical properties of 19 C3 and C4 woody species from arid regions of the American west and central Asia. Specific conductivity of stem xylem (Ks ) was 16%–98% lower in the C4 than C3 shrubs from the American west. In the Asian species, the C3 Nitraria schoberi had similar and Halimodendron halodendron higher Ks values compared with three C4 species. Leaf specific conductivity (KL ; hydraulic conductivity per leaf area) was 60%–98% lower in the C4 than C3 species, demonstrating that the presence of the C4 pathway alters the relationship between leaf area and the ability of the xylem to transport water. C4 species produced similar or smaller vessels than the C3 shrubs except in Calligonum, and most C4 shrubs exhibited higher wood densities than the C3 species. Together, smaller conduit size and higher wood density indicate that in most cases, the C4 shrubs exploited higher WUE by altering xylem structure to enhance safety from cavitation. In a minority of cases, the C4 shrubs maintained similar xylem properties but enhanced the canopy area per branch. By establishing a link between C4 photosynthesis and xylem structure, this study indicates that other phenomena that affect WUE, such as atmospheric CO2 variation, may also affect the evolution of wood structure and function.  相似文献

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber buds normally remain dormant through the growing season until several weeks after harvest. In the cultivar Majestic, this innate dormancy persisted for 9 to 12 weeks in storage at 10° C, but only 3 to 4 weeks when the tubers were stored at 2° C. At certain stages, supplying cytokinins to tubers with innately dormant buds induced sprout growth within 2 d. The growth rate was comparable to that of buds whose innate dormancy had been lost naturally. Cytokinin-treatment did not accelerate the rates of cell division and cell expansion in buds whose innate dormancy had already broken naturally. Gibberellic acid did not induce sprout growth in buds with innate dormancy. Summary As ramets of the willow, Salix cinerea L. (Salicaceae) aged shoot length decreased in the six populations studied in S.E. Finland. Many traits correlated positively with shoot length: basal diameter, number of internodes, internode length, leaf size, and length of growing period. The bud-galling sawfly, Euura mucronata (Hartig) Man. (Churchill) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), responded positively to shoot length or correlated traits, and negatively to ramet age in three forest populations. This herbivore attacked the most vigorous plants in a population, and numbers of attacks declined as ramets aged and senesced. The generality of this kind of herbivore response to plant quality is emphasized.  相似文献

The lipid composition of whole leaves and isolated plastoglobul of beech (Fagus sylvatica) has been studied during four natural autumnal senescence stages. Chlorophylls, glycolipids, and phospholipids were extensively degraded in leaves. About 20% of the glycolipids found in leaves during summer, however, remained in the last stage of leaf senescence. Triacylglycerols, also detected in large amounts in summer leaves, were hydrolyzed during senescence. The content of free fatty acids derived from degradation of glycerolipids therefore increased. The total carotenoid and prenyl quinone content was largely unchanged during senescence, except during the last stage investigated, but the reduced forms of prenyl quinones decreased while the oxidized prenyl quinones increased. Plastoglobuli isolated from summer leaves mainly contained triacylglycerols, plastohydroquinone, and -tocopherol. The triacylglycerol content declined in plastoglobuli during senescence. Most of the triacylglycerols must be located outside the plastoglobuli throughout the stages investigated. Carotenoids liberated from thylakoids were esterified and increasingly deposited in plastoglobuli during senescence. In the last senescence stage, carotenoid esters were the main component of plastoglobuli. Prenyl quinones were also transferred into plastoglobuli. Reduced prenyl quinones were sucessively oxidized during senescence and plastoquinone (oxidized) was the predominant prenyl quinone in plastoglobuli isolated from the last senescence stage. The carotenoid and prenyl quinone distribution was identical in leaves and plastoglobuli during late senescence. The main constituents of thylakoids, glycolipids and proteins, were not deposited in plastoglobuli and therefore did not play an important role in plastoglobuli metabolism.Abbreviation PQ plastoquinone  相似文献

The fluctuations of free and bound polyamines (PAs) were studied in vegetative buds and underlying twigs of linden (Tilia cordata L.) from August to May, to assess the connection between PA levels and seasonal cycles of growth and dormancy. Outer and inner bud scales and shoot tips (short shoot tips with leaf initials in contiguous short internodes) were analyzed separately, as were phloem with cortex and xylem with pith tissue from twigs. Seasonal variations in PA levels were present in buds and twigs during the research period. The most abundant PA in buds and twigs in free and bound forms was spermidine followed by putrescine. PA amounts were low in buds and twigs in autumn. In twig tissues, free PAs were predominant whereas in bud scales, bound PAs accumulated over free PAs in autumn, first in inner scales and later in outer scales as well. PA levels did not increase dramatically during the onset of dormancy in autumn but lower temperatures and probable cold hardening correlated positively with bound PAs in bud scales. In shoot tips with leaf initials, and contiguous short internodes, free putrescine and spermidine levels rose simultaneously with bud burst and new growth, while bound PAs diminished quite radically from temporary bud scales and from growing shoot tips.  相似文献

After transferring leaf, pith, and stemcortex tissues ofNicotiana tabacum L. cv. Havana 425 from a complete medium containing auxin and cytokinin to an inductive medium with auxin deleted, there is lag phase of approx. 14d followed by a linear phase in which the rate of bud initiation is constant. The incidence of buds formed is very low, approx. one bud per 103 or 104 cells. Statistical analysis of the distribution of buds among explants and subcloning experiments provide evidence that the paucity of buds results from neither negative interactions among bud forming centers nor a paucity of cells with the potential for organogenesis. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the frequency of bud initiation is determined by the availability of competent cells, by position effects, or by a combination of both mechanisms.  相似文献

The total adenylate pool of the apical buds of vegetative plants of Sinapis alba L. continuously grown in short days fluctuates over a 24-h cycle with the minimum occurring at the end of the dark period. In the buds of plants induced to flower by a single long-day treatment, total adenylate pool increases above the control level 16 h after the start of the long day, resulting mainly from a rise in ATP and ADP contents. This occurs 6 h after the increase in the soluble carbohydrate content previously shown to occur in the apical buds of plants induced to flower (Bodson 1977, Planta 135, 19–23). Chrysophycean scales were examined in surface sediments collected from 22 high mountain lakes on the southern slope of the Central Alps, some in Italy and some in Switzerland. The study area receives slightly acidic precipitation and summer lake pH ranges between 5.2 and 8.0. In each lake chrysophycean scale assemblage was dominated by one or two species and its composition was related to lakewater pH. Five short cores were examined in low-alkalinity lakes and evidence of recent lake acidification was found.  相似文献

Cytokinins have two different effects on protonemata of Funaria hygrometrica. They induce branching of unbranched caulonemata and bud formation. Branching occurs after treatment with pico-molar concentrations of cytokinins whereas bud formation requires micro-molar concentrations.
