Summary

For the first time, estimates of the amount of sparse bracken on open land, the amounts of bracken under tree cover and the amounts in linear features are made. These data were used to predict the areas of Scotland most at risk from invasion from patch edges, from sparse patches becoming dense and from invasion along linear features. Computer models show that if the climate warms over the next 50 yr as predicted, then bracken growth will increase and the amount of hill land suitable for invasion by bracken will increase. On some sites where bracken is being controlled, it is reduced in cover and other ground vegetation is becoming established. However, we cannot ensure that when bracken is controlled that the control is always effective and that appropriate vegetation will become established. Some generalized rules have been derived to help in the selection of sites likely to show the most benefit from control treatment.  相似文献

Abstract

Bracken is a weed of economic importance to hill farming, conservation, and forestry in many parts of the world. It is an aggressive competitor, capable of rapid spread by means of its persistent underground rhizomatous system, and it is highly toxic and carcinogenic to domestic stock. In addition, it harbors large populations of ticks that transmit disease to animals and humans.

Control by husbandry or by mechanical frond destruction is labor-intensive and often inadequate. Chemical control continues to be a subject of intensive research, with particular emphasis on the use of adjuvants, including surfactants. There is evidence that formulation of systemic herbicides such as asulam or glyphosate with low concentrations (e.g., 0.05%) of certain nonionic surfactants can effectively increase foliar absorption and translocation to the underground rhizome buds.

Biological methods of control using either insects or fungi are under investigation. Certain bracken-feeding South African insects are specific to the variety of bracken (Pteridium aquilinum ssp. aquilinum var. aquilinum) that is also common in the U.K. It is proposed that the moth Conservula consigna would occupy a vacant ecological niche if introduced into the U.K. bracken ecosystem and thereby give effective control. The insect feeds on the pinnae and completes its life cycle on bracken. The fungus Ascochyta pteridis is indigenous to the U.K., where, under certain climatic conditions, it causes the disease of bracken known as curl-tip. The potential of a mycoherbicidal formulation, in which the spores are mixed with adjuvants designed to give the fungus a competitive advantage, is under investigation. Oil and water emulsions, for example, are expected to be of particular importance: they assist adhesion of spores to the host surface while providing water for their germination.

This review examines the problems posed by bracken and the progress of research toward the development of economically and environmentally acceptable methods of control of this noxious and aggressive weed.  相似文献

The ubiquitous bracken fern (genus Pteridium) is the only higher plant known to cause cancer naturally in animals. In addition to the well-recognized syndromes of thiamine deficiency, acute haemorrhage associated with myeloid aplasia and blindness due to retinal degeneration, it causes neoplasia of the urinary bladder and in some circumstances, of the upper gut. In addition, it has been shown to cause neoplasia in a wide range of tissues in many experimental species. The major carcinogen (and the cause of the retinal degeneration and the myeloid aplasia) has been shown to be ptaquiloside (PT), a norsesquiterpene glucoside that can be present in bracken in extraordinary concentrations, up to 13 000 ppm. The highest concentrations were found in the crosiers and young unfolding fronds. The mutagenicity, clastogenicity, teratogenicity and carcinogenicity have been convincingly demonstrated. Under alkaline conditions the loss of the glucose gives rise to the formation of a dienone intermediate which possesses a highly reactive cyclopropyl ring capable of reacting with cellular macromolecules. PT has been shown to alkylate DNA at N3 of adenines in the minor groove, preferentially in 5'-TAG and 3'-A in 5'-AA-3' sequences. It also alkylates N7 guanines in the major groove occurring in 5'-TG sequences. It is believed that these alkylations lead to mismatch repair and subsequent mutations in particular proto-oncogenes. Recently a rat model of carcinogenesis has been established using intravenously (iv) administered PT. Some epidemiological evidence has indicated higher risk of cancer in people who consume bracken crosiers, people who consume milk of cows feeding on bracken and those who live in bracken-infested areas. PT has been found in the milk of cows fed on bracken fern experimentally and the milk of bracken-fed cows has been shown to cause cancer in rats. PT carcinogenesis presents an excellent model of environmental and experimental carcinogenesis.  相似文献

The nutrient flow in bracken stands during year showed an inerement of nutrients in standing crop from winter to autumn, reabsorbing the nutrients by plants from soil. In autumn the senescence of live fronds results in a loss of nutrients to standing dead and the nutrients in some below ground standing crop is lost to dead rhizomes. Annual uptakes were estimated to be 17.6 g/m2 potassium, 16.4 g/m2 nitrogen, 12.8 g/m2 calcium, 3.14 g/m2 manganese, 2.47 g/m2 iron, 2.12 g/m2 phosphorus. Compared the annual uptake of elements by bracken with nutrient budget in soil, the efficiency of elements absorbed from soil varied from 0.012 for nitrogen to 1.36 for iron.  相似文献

Histochemical demonstration of neurotoxic esterase   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We developed a histochemical method for localizing neurotoxic esterase (NTE), defined as the phenylvalerate (PV)-hydrolyzing esterase that is resistant to 40 microM paraoxon (A) but inactivated by paraoxon plus 50 microM mipafox (B). NTE is considered to be the target enzyme in the production of organophosphorus ester-induced delayed neurotoxicity (OPIDN). Cryostat sections were incubated in a medium containing alpha-naphthyl valerate and 6-benzamido-4-methoxy-m-toluidine diazonium chloride (fast violet B) after treatment with the above-mentioned inhibitors, leading to formation of an aqueous insoluble precipitate at sites of enzymatic activity. NTE activity was estimated as staining detectable in A but not in B. In the central nervous system (CNS) of chicken, NTE appeared to be present primarily in the somata of most neurons, but at sites indistinguishable from those of the other inhibitor-resistant and -sensitive alpha-naphthyl valerate-hydrolyzing esterases. It could not be distinguished in the CNS of cat, probably because it constitutes less than 3% of the total PV-hydrolyzing activity in the CNS of that species.  相似文献

In order to establish safe exposure levels for toxic chemicals, risk assessment guidelines have been developed. A compilation is given by the author on the elements of risk assessment of hazardous neurotoxic pesticides, using data obtained from human epidemiological studies, from animal experiments, from the international literature and from the author's own experiments as well. Well-controlled laboratory studies of neurotoxicity have the potential to provide adequate exposure and effect data for accurate hazard identification. Animal models of neurotoxicity as highly sensitive behavioral and neurophysiological methods as a function of doses, provide data for human low dose extrapolation by using mathematical models. This procedure might be the basis for reducing risk ("risk management"), therefore some examples are given, how to handle properly neurotoxic pesticides with different- high or low-risk.  相似文献

Following treatment with bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) extract and bracken spores a number of DNA adducts were detected by (32)P-postlabeling. Three of these adducts have been described previously (Povey et al., Br. J. Cancer (1996) 74, 1342-1348) and in this study, using a slightly different protocol, four new adducts, with higher chromatographic mobility, were detected at levels ranging from 50 to 230% of those previously described. When DNA was treated in vitro with activated ptaquiloside (APT) and analysed by butanol extraction or nuclease P1 treatment, only one adduct was detected by (32)P-postlabeling. This adduct was not present in the DNA from mice treated with bracken fern or spores, suggesting either that bracken contains genotoxins other than ptaquiloside or that the metabolism of ptaquiloside produces genotoxins not reflected by activated ptaquiloside. However, as the ATP-derived adduct has been detected previously in ileal DNA of bracken-fed calves, species-specific differences in the metabolism of bracken genotoxins may exist, thereby leading to differences in their biological outcomes.  相似文献

Background: Undisturbed high elevation treelines follow a common growing season isotherm, irrespective of latitude. Small stature plants thrive at much higher elevations because they grow in a favourable microclimate near the ground, whereas trees are aerodynamically coupled to free atmospheric circulation, hence the uniform treeline elevation in a given region.

Aims: I argue that the treeline results from tree architecture and not from a tree-specific inferior physiology. At tissue level, all cold adapted higher plants (including winter crops) face similar temperature related limitations and are constrained by similar thermal thresholds.

Methods: In order to explore this hypothesis, winter rape and winter oat were grown in the field and the daily rate of leaf expansion was measured during early winter, with temperatures similar to those at treeline at the beginning of the growing season (monthly mean temperature of 5 °C).

Results: Leaves of these winter crops only grew when the degree hours above 5 °C for a given day exceeded zero. Rape and oats showed very similar responses. The data support a common temperature threshold for tissue formation in winter crops and treeline trees.

Conclusions: A literature survey revealed lower temperature thresholds (close to freezing point) in arctic and Antarctic algae. It appears that the formation of complex, partly lignified tissue does not happen below 5 °C, whereas such temperatures exert little constraints on photosynthesis. The study illustrates that tissue growth in winter crops can help understand growth of treeline trees, given that both exhibit similar minimum temperature requirements for meristem functioning.  相似文献

This article presents the latest study results on lead (Pb2+) neurotoxicity, in order to draw attention of the Polish public to the issue and initiate a nation-wide programme eliminating lead contamination effects, especially in children. We discuss the after-effect of exposure to lead in concentrations lower than presently accepted as 'safe'. The pathway of lead transport to the brain, and the effects of lead accumulation in neurons, oligodendroglia and astroglia, are examined. We also present the impairing influence of lead on the cognitive brain functions and learning abilities as a result of affecting three main neurotransmission systems: dopaminergic, cholinergic and glutaminergic. Bats play an important role in agroecology and are effective bioindicators of environmental conditions, but little is known about their fundamental migration ecology, much less how these systems are responding to global change. Some of the world's largest bat populations occur during the summer in the south‐central United States, when millions of pregnant females migrate from lower latitudes to give birth in communal maternity colonies. Despite a relatively large volume of research into these colonies, many fundamental questions regarding their abundance—including their intra‐ and interseasonal variability—remain unanswered, and even estimating the size of individual populations has been a long‐running challenge. Overall, monitoring these bat populations at high temporal resolution (e.g., nightly) and across long time spans (e.g., decades) has been impossible. Here, we show 22 continuous years of nightly population counts at Bracken Cave, a large bat colony in south‐central Texas, enabling the first climate‐scale phenological analysis. Using quantitative radar monitoring, we found that spring migration and the summer reproductive cycle have advanced by approximately 2 weeks over the study period. Furthermore, we quantify the ongoing growth of a newly—established overwintering population that indicates a system‐wide response to changing environmental conditions. Our observations reveal behavioral plasticity in bats’ ability to adapt to changing resource availability, and provide the first long‐term quantification of their response to a changing climate. As aerial insectivores, these changes in bat phenology and propensity for overwintering indicate probable shifts in prey availability, with clear implications for pest management across wider regional agrisystems.  相似文献

A growing body of experimental evidence suggests that the oxidative neurotoxicity of hemoglobin A may contribute to neuronal loss after CNS hemorrhage. Several hemoglobin variants, including hemoglobin S, are more potent oxidants in cell-free systems. However, despite the increased incidence of hemorrhagic stroke associated with sickle cell disease, little is known of the effect of hemoglobin S on cells of neural origin. In the present study, its toxicity was quantified and directly compared with that of hemoglobin A in murine cortical cell cultures. Reactive oxygen species production, as assessed by cellular fluorescence after treatment with dihydrorhodamine 123, was significantly increased by exposure to 10 μM hemoglobin S for 2-4 h. Neuronal death, as measured by propidium iodide staining and lactate dehydrogenase release, commenced at 4 h; for a 20-h exposure, the EC50 was approximately 0.71 μm. Glial cells were not injured. Cell death was completely blocked by iron chelation with deferoxamine or phenanthroline. Direct comparison of sister cultures exposed to either hemoglobin A or hemoglobin S revealed a similar amount of cell injury in both groups. A significant difference was consistently observed only after treatment with 1 μM hemoglobin for 20 h, which resulted in death of approximately one third more neurons with hemoglobin S than with hemoglobin A. The results of this study suggest that sickle cell hemoglobin is neurotoxic at physiologically relevant concentrations. This toxicity is iron-dependent, oxidative, and quantitatively similar to that produced by hemoglobin A.  相似文献

Tau aggregation is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and many other neurodegenerative disorders known as tauopathies. Tau aggregates take on many forms, and their formation is a multistage process with intermediate stages. Recently, tau oligomers have emerged as the pathogenic species in tauopathies and a possible mediator of amyloid-β toxicity in Alzheimer's disease. Here, we use a novel, physiologically relevant method (oligomer cross-seeding) to prepare homogeneous populations of tau oligomers and characterize these oligomers in vitro. We show that both Aβ and α-synuclein oligomers induce tau aggregation and the formation of β-sheet-rich neurotoxic tau oligomers.  相似文献

Chronic exposure to agricultural chemicals (pesticides/herbicides) has been shown to induce neurotoxic effects or results in accumulation of various toxic metabolic by-products. These substances have the relevant ability to cause or increase the risk for neurodegeneration. Diquat is an herbicide that has been extensively used in the United States of America and other parts of the world. Diquat is constantly released into the environment during its use as a contact herbicide. Diquat structurally resembles 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6 tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) and paraquat. Rotenone, paraquat, maneb and MPTP reproduce features of movement disorders in experimental animal models. Based on the structural similarity to other neurotoxins, chronic exposure of diquat can induce behavioral and neurochemical alterations associated with dopaminergic neurotoxicity. However, in the present study, diquat unlike other neurotoxins (rotenone, 6-hydroxydopamine, MPTP, paraquat and maneb) did not induce dopamine depletion in the mouse striatum. Although, notable exacerbation in motor impairment (swimming score, akinesia and open field) were evident that may be due to the decreased dopamine turnover and mild nigrostriatal neurodegeneration. These data indicate that, despite the apparent structural similarity to other dopaminergic neurotoxins, diquat did not exert severe deleterious effects on dopamine neurons in a manner that is unique to rotenone and MPTP.  相似文献
