To determine the cardiorespiratory response to maximal exercise before, during and after the pubescent growth spurt, thirty boys were tested at yearly intervals over a period of six consecutive years. For each individual, peak height velocity (PHV) was determined. The age at PHV (X = 13.6 years) was taken as a standard of maturation. The results from all subjects at 1.5 and 0.5 years before and 0.5 and 1.5 years after PHV are presented. The highest oxygen uptake (VO2) obtained during an incremental bicycle ergometer test to voluntary exhaustion was taken as peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak). Across each of the four years studied, mean VO2 peak (min = 49.6; max = 52.5 ml.kg-1.min-1) and mean heart rate (HR) at VO2 peak (min = 190; max = 192) did not change significantly as a function of PHV. On the other hand, the respiratory quotient at VO2 peak increased considerably from mean minima and maxima of 0.99 and 1.01 before PHV to 1.07 and 1.10 after PHV. Ventilatory equivalent for VO2 (VE/VO2), taken as an indicator of ventilatory economy, seemed to be unaffected by the maturation process. The steepest increase in circumpubertal oxygen pulse was found one year after PHV. Average stability coefficients (r), calculated from the inter-years correlations were high for height (r = 0.95), weight (r = 0.92), HR at VO2 peak (r = 0.74), VO2 peak in 1/min (r = 0.71), oxygen pulse (r = 0.68) and tidal volume (r = 0.64).  相似文献

Purpose

This study sought to investigate the influence of phoria adaptation on convergence peak velocity from responses located at different initial vergence positions.

Methods

Symmetrical 4° convergence step responses and near dissociated phoria (measured at 40 cm from the subject''s midline) were recorded from six subjects with normal binocular vision using an infrared limbus tracking system with a haploscope. Two different sustained fixations (1° and 16° convergent rotation along the subject''s midline) were used to study whether phoria had an influence on the peak velocity of convergence responses located at two initial vergence positions (1° or ‘far’ steps and 12° or ‘near’ steps).

Results

Phoria was significantly adapted after a sustained fixation task at near (16°) and far (1°) (p<0.002). A repeated measures ANOVA showed that convergence far steps were significantly faster than the near steps (p<0.03). When comparing convergence steps with the same initial vergence position, steps measured after near phoria adaptation were faster than responses after far adaptation (p<0.02). A regression analysis demonstrated that the change in phoria and the change in convergence peak velocity were significantly correlated for the far convergence steps (r = 0.97, p = 0.001). A weaker correlation was observed for the near convergence steps (r = 0.59, p = 0.20).

Conclusion

As a result of sustained fixation, phoria was adapted and the peak velocity of the near and far convergence steps was modified. This study has clinical considerations since prisms, which evoke phoria adaptation, can be prescribed to help alleviate visual discomfort. Future investigations should include a systematic study of how prisms may influence convergence and divergence eye movements for those prescribed with prisms within their spectacles.  相似文献

To investigate the ability of the OMNI-RES (0–10) scale to estimate velocity and loading changes during sets to failure in the hang power clean (HPC) exercise. Eleven recreationally resistance-trained males (28.5 ± 3.5 years) with an average one-repetition maximum (1RM) value of 1.1 ± 0.07 kg body mass-1 in HPC, were assessed on five separate days with 48 hours of rest between sessions. After determining the 1RM value, participants performed four sets to self-determined failure with the following relative loading ranges: 60% < 70%, 70 < 80%, 80 < 90% and > 90%. The peak vertical velocity (PVV), and Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) were measured for every repetition of each set. The RPE expressed after the first repetition (RPE-1) and when the highest value of PVV was achieved during the set (RPE-max) were similar and significantly lower than the RPE associated with a 5% (RPE-5%) and 10% (RPE-10%) drop in PVV. In addition, the RPE produced at failure was similar to RPE-5% only for the heaviest range (≥ 90%). Furthermore, RPE-1 was useful to distinguish loading zones between the four assessed ranges (60 < 70%, vs. 70 < 80%, vs. 80 < 90%, vs. ≥ 90%). The RPE seems to be useful to identify PVV changes (maximal, 5% and 10% drop) during continuous sets to self-determined failure and to distinguish 10% loading zone increments, from 60 to 100% of 1RM in the HPC exercise.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Tissue velocity echocardiography is increasingly used to evaluate global and regional cardiac function. Previous studies have suggested that the quantitative measurements obtained during ejection are reliable indices of contractility, though their load-sensitivity has been studied in different settings, but still remains a matter of controversy. We sought to characterize the effects of acute load change (both preload and afterload) and change in inotropic state on peak systolic velocity and strain as a measure of LV contractility. METHODS: Thirteen anesthetized juvenile pigs were studied, using direct measurement of left ventricular pressure and volume and transthoracic echocardiography. Transient inflation of a vena cava balloon catheter produced controlled load alterations. At least eight consecutive beats in the sequence were analyzed with tissue velocity echocardiography during the load alteration and analyzed for change in peak systolic velocities and strain during same contractile status with a controlled load alteration. Two pharmacological inotropic interventions were also included to generate several myocardial contractile conditions in each animal. RESULTS: Peak systolic velocities reflected the drug-induced changes in contractility in both radial and longitudinal axis. During the acute load change, the peak systolic velocities remain stable when derived from signal in the longitudinal axis and from the radial axis. The peak systolic velocity parameter demonstrated no strong relation to either load or inotropic intervention, that is, it remained unchanged when load was systematically and progressively varied (peak systolic velocity, longitudinal axis, control group beat 1- 5.72 +/- 1.36 with beat 8- 6.49 +/- 1.28 cm/sec, 95% confidence interval), with the single exception of the negative inotropic intervention group where peak systolic velocity decreased a small amount during load reduction (beat 1- 3.98 +/- 0.92 with beat 8- 2.72 +/- 0.89 cm/sec). Systolic strain, however, showed a clear degree of load-dependence. CONCLUSIONS: Peak systolic velocity appears to be load-independent as tested by beat-to-beat load reduction, while peak systolic strain appears to be load-dependent in this model. Peak systolic velocity, in a controlled experimental model where successive beats during load alteration are assessed, has a strong relation to contractility. Peak systolic velocity, but not peak strain rate, is largely independent of load, in this model. More study is needed to confirm this finding in the clinical setting.  相似文献

Aortic flow measurement with Doppler echocardiography has become a non-invasive technique in clinical practice. In the present animal study, we evaluated the flow-derived parameters such as peak velocity (PV) and its maximal acceleration (MA) as indices of ventricular contractility independent of the loading status. Eight pentobarbital-anesthetized cats were maintained with artificial ventilation. The chest was opened to place an electromagnetic flow probe around the ascending aorta for recording pulsatile aortic flow. PV and MA were measured from the flow tracing and on-line electronic differentiation. Intravenous infusions of dobutamine (DT), angiotensin II (AII) and dextran (DN) were used to alter the cardiac inotropism, afterload and preload, respectively. At a steady state (approximately 5 min after infusion), DT increased the PV from 56 +/- 9 to 78 +/- 14 cm/sec (p less than 0.05) and MA from 1302 +/- 108 to 1699 +/- 117 cm/sec2 (p less than 0.05). In response to AII infusion, PV was slightly reduced (60 +/- 7 to 55 +/- 6 cm/sec, p less than 0.05) while MA was also reduced mildly but significantly (1219 +/- 109 to 1099 +/- 109 cm/sec2, p less than 0.05). Dextran infusion produced a marked increase in PV (48 +/- 7 to 82 +/- 13 cm/sec, p less than 0.05) while the increase was slightly less for MA (1089 +/- 95 to 1604 +/- 109 cm/sec2). The results indicated that inotropic stimulation markedly increased both PV and MA. PV and MA responded slightly but significantly to afterload alterations. (8.3% vs 9.8%, respectively). Both PV and MA increased markedly to the preload increment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Little is known about the velocity-specific adaptations to training utilizing movement velocities in excess of 300 degrees x s(-1). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of 4 weeks of slow (60 degrees x s(-1)) vs. fast (400 degrees x s(-1)) velocity training on rate of velocity development (RVD), peak torque (PT), and performance. Twenty male kinesiology students (22.0 years +/- 2.72; 178.6 cm +/- 7.1; 82.7 kg +/- 15.5) were tested, before and after 4 weeks of training, for PT production, RVD (at 60, 180, 300, 400, and 450 degrees x s(-1)), standing long jump (SLJ) distance, and 15- and 40-m sprint times. All participants underwent 8 training sessions, performing 5 sets of 5 repetitions of simultaneous, bilateral, concentric knee extension exercises on a Biodex System 3 isokinetic dynamometer at either 60 degrees or 400 degrees per second. Two 5 (speed) x 2 (time) x 2 (group) multivariate repeated measures analyses of variance revealed no significant differences between groups on any measure. Therefore, the groups were collapsed for analysis. There was a significant (p < 0.05) main effect for RVD by time and SLJ distance by time (pre- 227.1 cm +/- 21.2; post- 232.9 cm +/- 20.7) but no significant change in PT or 15- or 40-m sprint times. These results offer support for the suggestion that there is a significant neural adaptation to short-term isokinetic training performed by recreationally trained males, producing changes in limb acceleration and performance with little or no change in strength. Because results were independent of training velocity, it appears as though the intention to move quickly is sufficient stimulus to achieve improvements in limb RVD. Changes in SLJ distance suggest that open kinetic chain training may benefit the performance of a closed kinetic chain activity when movement pattern specificity is optimized.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of prolongedbed rest (BR) on the peak isometric force(Po) and unloaded shorteningvelocity (Vo)of single Ca2+-activated musclefibers. Soleus muscle biopsies were obtained from eight adult malesbefore and after 17 days of 6° head-down BR. Chemicallypermeabilized single fiber segments were mounted between a forcetransducer and position motor, activated with saturating levels ofCa2+, and subjected to slacklength steps. Vowas determined by plotting the time for force redevelopment vs. theslack step distance. Gel electrophoresis revealed that 96% of the pre-and 87% of the post-BR fibers studied expressed only the slow type Imyosin heavy chain isoform. Fibers with diameter >100 µm made uponly 14% of this post-BR type I population compared with 33% of thepre-BR type I population. Consequently, the post-BR type I fibers(n = 147) were, on average, 5%smaller in diameter than the pre-BR type I fibers(n = 218) and produced 13% lessabsolute Po. BR had no overalleffect on Po per fibercross-sectional area(Po/CSA), even though halfof the subjects displayed a decline of 9-12% inPo/CSA after BR. Type Ifiber Voincreased by an average of 34% with BR. Although the ratio of myosinlight chain 3 to myosin light chain 2 also rose with BR, there was nocorrelation between this ratio andVo for either thepre- or post-BR fibers. In separate fibers obtained from the originalbiopsies, quantitative electron microscopy revealed a 20-24%decrease in thin filament density, with no change in thick filamentdensity. These results raise the possibility that alterations in thegeometric relationships between thin and thick filaments may be atleast partially responsible for the elevatedVo of the post-BRtype I fibers.

Protein profiling with surface-enhanced laser desorption-ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF MS) is a promising approach for biomarker discovery. Some candidate biomarkers have been identified using SELDI-TOF, but validation of these can be challenging because of technical parameters that effect reproducibility. Here we describe steps to improve the reproducibility of peak detection.  相似文献

The effects of a 10-wk unilateral knee extension strength training (ST) program on peak power (PP) and peak movement velocity (PV), at given absolute (force load) and relative (same % of 1 repetition maximum) resistances (loads), were examined in 30 older men [64 yr (7 SD)] and 32 older women [62 yr (6 SD)]. PP increased significantly in both men and women at the same absolute (P < 0.001) and relative loads (P < 0.01) with ST. Men had a significantly greater increase in relative PP than women with ST at 60% (P < 0.01) and 70% (P < 0.001) of 1 repetition maximum when covarying for baseline differences and age. However, when each subject was tested at the same absolute load and when PP was normalized for the muscle volume of the trained knee extensors (i.e., absolute muscle power quality), women increased by 9% (P < 0.05), whereas men did not change. Both men and women increased their absolute PV (P < 0.001) but decreased their relative PV significantly with ST (P < 0.05). However, when baseline values and age were covaried, women had significantly less of a decrease in relative PV quality with ST than men (P < 0.01), although the difference was small. These normalized data suggest that ST-induced increases in PP depend on muscular hypertrophy in men, but not in women, providing further support for the hypothesis developed from our previous report (Ivey FM, Tracy BL, Lemmer JT, NessAiver M, Metter EJ, Fozard JL and Hurley BF. J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci 55: B152-B157, 2000) that improvements in muscle function with ST result from nonmuscle mass adaptations to a greater extent in women than men.  相似文献

It is often claimed that the walking gaits of primates are unusual because, unlike most other mammals, primates appear to have higher vertical peak ground reaction forces on their hindlimbs than on their forelimbs. Many researchers have argued that this pattern of ground reaction force distribution is part of a general adaptation to arboreal locomotion. This argument is frequently used to support models of primate locomotor evolution. Unfortunately, little is known about the force distribution patterns of primates walking on arboreal supports, nor do we completely understand the mechanisms that regulate weight distribution in primates. We collected vertical peak force data for seven species of primates walking quadrupedally on instrumented terrestrial and arboreal supports. Our results show that, when walking on arboreal vs. terrestrial substrates, primates generally have lower vertical peak forces on both limbs but the difference is most extreme for the forelimb. We found that force reduction occurs primarily by decreasing forelimb and, to a lesser extent, hindlimb stiffness. As a result, on arboreal supports, primates experience significantly greater functional differentiation of the forelimb and hindlimb than on the ground. These data support long-standing theories that arboreal locomotion was a critical factor in the differentiation of the forelimbs and hindlimbs in primates. This change in functional role of the forelimb may have played a critical role in the origin of primates and facilitated the evolution of more specialized locomotor behaviors.  相似文献

The Wavelet Interpolation Method (WIM) was applied to the longitudinal records of individuals' heights and weights from 6 to 17 years of age (1983 to 1994) in an athlete group (male: 45, female: 50) and a control group (male: 85, female: 85). The criterion of maturity was derived from age at Maximum Peak Velocity (MPV) of height in the control group. Ages at MPV of height and weight were compared between the athletes and control subjects. The WIM was also applied to mean heights from 6.5 to 17.5 years of all the subjects classified by maturation rate in order to derive a model of growth velocity types.Among the athletes, the males were early-maturing and the females tended to be late-maturing. The difference between the ages at MPV of height and weight in males and females was less in the athletes group than in the control group. For the growth velocity model, in the athlete group, three types could be confirmed among the males, and five among the females. By making use of the type models, it was possible to clarify the spans of adolescence as classified by maturation rates, and it was concluded that the period following the age at MPV seems appropriate for the introduction of regular athletic training for each level of maturity.  相似文献

This article describes applications of scalar expectancy theory (SET), learning-to-time theory (LeT), and Packet theory to data from a peak procedure. Twelve rats were trained in a multiple cued-interval procedure with two fixed intervals (60 and 120 s) signaled by houselight and white noise. Twenty-five percent of the cycles were nonfood cycles, which were 360 s long and had no reinforcement. Mean and individual response rates on nonfood cycles were fitted with explicit solutions of SET, LeT and Packet theory. Applications of the three timing theories were compared in terms of goodness of fit and complexity.  相似文献

Active drag related to velocity in male and female swimmers   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Propulsive arm forces of 32 male and 9 female swimmers were measured during front crawl swimming using arms only, in a velocity range between 1.0 m s-1 and 1.8 m s-1. At constant velocity, the measured mean propulsive force Fp equals the mean active drag force (Fd). It was found that Fd is related to the swimming velocity v raised to the power 2.12 +/- 0.20 (males) or 2.28 +/- 0.35 (females). Although many subjects showed rather constant values of Fd/v2, 12 subjects gave significantly (p less than 0.01) stronger or weaker quadratic relationships. Differences in drag force and coefficient of drag between males and females (drag: 28.9 +/- 5.1 N, 20.4 +/- 1.9 N, drag coefficient: 0.64 +/- 0.09, 0.54 +/- 0.07 respectively) are especially apparent at the lowest swimming velocity (1 m s-1), which become less at higher swimming velocities. Possible explanations for the deviation of the power of the velocity from the ideal quadratic dependency are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of a concurrent task on timing performance of pigeons was investigated with the peak interval procedure. Birds were trained to peck a side key on a discrete-trial schedule that included reinforced fixed-interval (FI) 30-s trials and nonreinforced extended probe trials. Then, in separate sessions, birds were trained to peck a 6-s center key for food. In a subsequent test phase, the FI procedure was in effect along with dual-task probe test trials. On those test trials, the 6-s center key (task cue) was presented at 3, 9, or 15s after probe trial onset. During another test phase, a 6-s gap (the FI keylight was extinguished) was presented at 3, 9, or 15s after probe trial onset. Peak time increased with center key time of onset, and was greater under task than gap conditions. Moreover, peak time under task conditions exceeded values predicted by stop and reset clock mechanisms. These results are at variance with current attentional accounts of timing behavior in dual-task conditions, and suggest a role of nontemporal factors in the control of timing behavior.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: A common problem in the emerging field of metabolomics is the consolidation of signal lists derived from metabolic profiling of different cell/tissue/fluid states where a number of replicate experiments was collected on each state. RESULTS: We describe an approach for the consolidation of peak lists based on hierarchical clustering, first within each set of replicate experiments and then between the sets of replicate experiments. The problems of finding the dendrogram tree cutoff which gives the optimal number of peak clusters and the effect of different clustering methods were addressed. When applied to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolic profiling data acquired on Leishmania mexicana, this approach resulted in robust data matrices which completely separated the wild-type and two mutant parasite lines based on their metabolic profile.  相似文献

Few initiatives to preserve and enhance biodiversity on farmland have been as thoroughly evaluated and debated as the agri-environment schemes (AES). Yet, little is known how confounding factors co-varying with the specific AES measures may affect species responses. Here, we quantify the influence of one such factor, the time since transition to organic farming, on moth diversity patterns. We found that species richness and abundance of moths were higher on new organic farms (years since transition ≤6) compared to old organic (≥15 years) and conventional farms, indicating a transient diversity peak. This correlates with the abundance patterns of the weed Cirsium arvense, which also reached its highest densities on new organic farms. Weeds such as C. arvense constitute a notorious problem in organic farming. However, they also provide various resources for farmland biodiversity, and our results strongly suggest that the transient weed peak may be important in influencing the parallel peak among the moths. This stresses the problem in balancing out production and conservation values. More generally, our results show that rather than having static effects on the environment, AES can have an important temporal component and result in a dynamic interplay between different trophic levels.  相似文献

Mass spectrometry data are often corrupted by noise. It is very difficult to simultaneously detect low-abundance peaks and reduce false-positive peak detection caused by noise. In this paper, we propose to improve peak detection using an additional constraint: the consistent appearance of similar true peaks across multiple spectra. We observe that false -positive peaks in general do not repeat themselves well across multiple spectra. When we align all the identified peaks (including false-positive ones) from multiple spectra together, those false-positive peaks are not as consistent as true peaks. Thus, we propose to use information from other spectra in order to reduce false-positive peaks. The new method improves the detection of peaks over the traditional single spectrum based peak detection methods. Consequently, the discovery of cancer biomarkers also benefits from this improvement.
