The hypothesis of evasive mimicry proposes that: (a) the conspicuous coloration of some animals has evolved to warn predators that they are good at avoiding capture; and (b) this conspicuous coloration is mimicked by other, less evasive species which thus gain protection from predation. We have tested these ideas with wild birds as the predators and red and yellow pastry 'baits' as the prey. We used a specially constructed bird table to make one of the colours good at 'escaping': when a bird was about to eat a bait the observer pulled a cord which activated a mechanism that made the baits of one colour (but not the other) drop out of the bird's reach. We first measured the overall selection by the naive birds by presenting, for one day, a 'control' of equal numbers of non-evasive red and non-evasive yellow baits. The birds were then trained for 20 days on equal numbers of evasive yellow and non-evasive red baits, and were then again given a second control (in which the yellows were now non-evasive 'mimics'). The training was repeated for 18 days but with red as the evasive colour, and a third control was then presented (with reds now as the mimics). The proportions attacked daily in the two training sessions suggested that the birds were learning to ignore yellows in the first and reds in the second. In comparison with the first control, fewer yellows were eaten after they had been trained to ignore escaping yellows, and more were eaten after they had been trained on escaping reds. We conclude that the results are further evidence for the hypothesis of evasive mimicry.  相似文献

Red light induces two distinct inhibition responses in mesocotyls of etiolated corn seedlings. A light dose of 10 nanoeinsteins per square centimeter is saturating for the more sensitive response, whereas doses above 1,000 nanoeinsteins per square centimeter are required to exceed the threshold sensitivity of the less sensitive one. The sensitive response can be detected within 20 minutes of the onset of illumination whereas the other response does not become apparent until more than 4 hours after the beginning of irradiation. The reciprocity law is valid for the first response, but probably not for the second. An action spectrum for the first response shows two maxima, one at 640 nanometers and the other between 660 and 670 nanometers, with a pronounced minimum near 650 nanometers. The effects both of 640 and 665 nanometers of light were reversible by far red light, but doses of far red required for full reversibility were almost three orders of magnitude greater than the doses of red required either to saturate the initial inhibition or to reverse the effect of far red light. The results suggest that corn may contain a red-absorbing pigment other than phytochrome which in some way interacts with phytochrome in the inhibition of mesocotyl elongation by red light.  相似文献

An assay of granulocyte viability has been developed which yields information about rwo important cell parameters, cell membrane integrity and phagocytic activity. The assay is based on the fact that only live cells can accumulate fluorescein, which is enzymatically split from the nonfluorescent substrate fluorescein diacetate. Dead cells, on the other hand, become permeable to the fluorescent red dye ethidium bromide. When cells are exposed first to opsonized zymosan particles, which they can phagocytize, then to a combination of these fluorescent dyes, one can distinguish microscopically between dead cells with fluorescent red nuclei, live cells which fluoresce green, and live cells with phagocytic function which are swollen with the pink zymosan particles in a green fluorescing cytoplasm. This assay takes 20--30 min and can be used to distinguish different degrees of cellular damage after cryopreservation.  相似文献

Hunting Behavior of Chimpanzees at Ngogo,Kibale National Park,Uganda   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) prey on a variety of vertebrates, mostly on red colobus (Procolobus spp.) where the two species are sympatric. Variation across population occurs in hunting frequency and success, in whether hunting is cooperative, i.e., payoffs to individual hunters increase with group size, and in the extent to which hunters coordinate their actions in space and time, and in the impact of hunting on red colobus populations. Also, hunting frequency varies over time within populations, for reasons that are unclear. We present new data on hunting by chimpanzees at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda, and combine them with earlier data (Mitani and Watts, 1999, Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 109: 439–454) to examine hunting frequency and success, seasonality, and cooperation. The Ngogo community is the largest and has the most males of any known community. Chimpanzees there mostly hunt red colobus and are much more successful and make many more kills per hunt than at other sites; they kill 6–12% of the red colobus population annually. The number of kills and the offtake of meat per hunt increase with the number of hunters, but per capita meat intake is independent of hunting party size; this suggests that cheating occurs in large parties. Some behavioral cooperation occurs. Hunting success and estimated meat intake vary greatly among males, partly due to dominance rank effects. The high overall success rate leads to relatively high average per capita meat intake despite the large number of consumers. The frequency of hunts and of hunting patrols varies positively with the availability of ripe fruit; this is the first quantitative demonstration of a relationship between hunting frequency and the availability of other food, and implies that the chimpanzees hunt most when they can easily meet energy needs from other sources. We provide the first quantitative support for the argument that variation in canopy structure influences decisions to hunt red colobus because hunts are easier where the canopy is broken.  相似文献

Red cells infected with the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum have an increased permeability to a range of small, structurally unrelated solutes via a malaria-induced pathway. We report here a similar pathway present in parasitised red cells from chickens infected with the avian malaria parasite, Plasmodium gallinaceum. Parasitised cells showed a marked increase in the rate of influx of sorbitol (76-fold) and, to a lesser degree, taurine (3-fold) when compared with red cells from uninfected chickens. Pharmacological data suggest that both sorbitol and taurine are transported via a single malaria-induced pathway, which is sensitive to inhibition by 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)benzoic acid (IC(50) approximately 7 microM). The malaria-induced pathway differed in its inhibition by a range of anion channel inhibitors when compared to the endogenous, volume-activated osmolyte pathway of chicken red cells. There were also differences in the selectivity of sorbitol and taurine by the two permeation routes. The data presented here are consistent with the presence of two distinct organic solute pathways in infected chicken red cells. The first is an endogenous volume-activated pathway, which is not activated by the parasite and the second is a malaria-induced pathway, similar to those that are induced by other types of malaria in other host species.  相似文献

Although the question whether the red cell is fluid or solid has been discussed since 17th century, it was the author's measurement of the relative viscosity of blood in 1960's that supplied the first direct evidence that the red cell interior is fluid. Furthermore, through his application of the equations of Taylor and, later, Oldroyd, to this problem, it became evident that, for the red cell to exhibit fluid-drop-like behavior, the membrane must also be fluid. This led to his concept of the red cell membrane as a complex two-phase structure (lipoprotein micelles and two-dimensional protein networks) which was similar to the one accepted nearly a decade later. The requirements of the theory of ideal emulsions that the shear stress be transmitted into the cell interior via low viscosity membrane, are met in the later work of other investigators using the concept of a tank-treading membrane having viscoelastic properties. This paper reviews the original work of the author which led to the development of an equation for the relative viscosity of blood as a function of volume concentration, C: nr = (1 - TkC)-2.5, valid at shear rates above 180 sec-1, in which T is the Taylor factor which gives a measure of fluidity of the red cell, and k is a plasma trapping factor. Both T and k increase with increasing rigidity of the red cell. Finally, the effect of the membrane viewed as a complex two-phase fluid, on the rheology of the red cell is discussed.  相似文献

We have uncovered a physiologic process which negatively regulates the red cell mass by selectively hemolyzing young circulating red blood cells. This allows fine control of the number of circulating red blood cells under steady-state conditions and relatively rapid adaptation to new environments. Neocytolysis is initiated by a fall in erythropoietin levels, so this hormone remains the major regulator of red cell mass both with anemia and with red cell excess. Physiologic situations in which there is increased neocytolysis include the emergence of newborns from the hypoxic uterine environment and the descent of polycythemic high-altitude dwellers to sea level. The process first became apparent while investigating the mechanism of the anemia that invariably occurs after spaceflight. Astronauts experience acute central plethora on entering microgravity resulting in erythropoietin suppression and neocytolysis, but the reduced blood volume and red cell mass become suddenly maladaptive on re-entry to earth's gravity. The pathologic erythropoietin deficiency of renal disease precipitates neocytolysis, which explains the prolongation of red cell survival consistently resulting from erythropoietin therapy and points to optimally efficient erythropoietin dosing schedules. Implications should extend to a number of other physiologic and pathologic situations including polycythemias, hemolytic anemias, 'blood-doping' by elite athletes, and oxygen therapy. It is likely that erythropoietin influences endothelial cells which in turn signal reticuloendothelial phagocytes to destroy or permit the survival of young red cells marked by surface molecules. Ongoing studies to identify the molecular targets and cytokine intermediaries should facilitate detection, dissection and eventual therapeutic manipulation of the process.  相似文献

The first outbreak of red sea bream iridoviral disease caused by red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) was recorded in cultured red sea bream Pagrus major in Shikoku Island, Japan in 1990. Since 1991, the disease has caused mass mortalities of cultured marine fishes not only red sea bream but also many other species. The affected fish were lethargic and exhibited severe anemia, petechiae of the gills, and enlargement of the spleen. The causative agent was a large, icosahedral, cytoplasmic DNA virus classified as a member of the family Iridoviridae and was designated as red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV). The genome of RSIV is liner dsDNA and considered to be circularly permitted and terminally redundant like other iridoviruses. The length of physical map of RSIV genome is 112,415bp. An indirect immunofluorescence test with a monoclonal antibody and PCR are commonly used for the rapid diagnosis of RSIV infected fish in the field. For the control of this disease, a formalin-killed vaccine against red sea bream iridoviral disease was developed and now commercially available.  相似文献

The complete nucleotide sequence of the plastid genome of the unicellular primitive red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae 10D (Cyanidiophyceae) was determined. The genome is a circular DNA composed of 149,987 bp with no inverted repeats. The G + C content of this plastid genome is 37.6%. The C. merolae plastid genome contains 243 genes, which are distributed on both strands and consist of 36 RNA genes (3 rRNAs, 31 tRNAs, tmRNA, and a ribonuclease P RNA component) and 207 protein genes, including unidentified open reading frames. The striking feature of this genome is the high degree of gene compaction; it has very short intergenic distances (approximately 40% of the protein genes were overlapped) and no genes have introns. This genome encodes several genes that are rarely found in other plastid genomes. A gene encoding a subunit of sulfate transporter (cysW) is the first to be identified in a plastid genome. The cysT and cysW genes are located in the C. merolae plastid genome in series, and they probably function together with other nuclear-encoded components of the sulfate transport system. Our phylogenetic results suggest that the Cyanidiophyceae, including C. merolae, are a basal clade within the red lineage plastids.  相似文献

The quantity of a radioactive hemolysin, sodium dodecyl sulfonate-S35, taken up by red cells from concentrations too small to produce hemolysis varies with the lysin concentration, and does so in a way which can be described by an adsorption isotherm. Attempts to use color reactions or surface tension measurements to determine the quantity of digitonin, saponin, and the bile salts taken up by red cells from hypolytic concentrations have failed, principally because chromogenic, and also surface-active, substances are liberated from the cells when the lysin is added. Color reactions with the anthrone reagent show that digitonin and saponin are both taken up by or fixed to red cell ghosts; the extent of the uptake, however, is uncertain, again because of the liberation of chromogenic substances. Comparison of the results of the various methods which measure the apparent amount of lysin fixed, or utilized in reactions between lysins and red cells or ghosts show discrepancies between results given by direct methods (measurement of radioactivity or of color) and indirect methods (addition of a second population after lysis of a first, and dependence of the position of the asymptote of the time-dilution curve on the number of red cells). The discrepancies are traceable to the inhibitory effects of substances liberated from the red cells or ghosts. The ease with which a lysin, once taken up by red cells, can be detached by diluting the system determines the extent to which the hemolytic reaction is "progressive," but has no observed connection with the quantity taken up in the first place. There is now ample evidence that lysis in systems containing simple hemolysins is a process involving two stages in time and two phases, and that it is usually complicated by reactions between the hemolysin and liberated inhibitory material.  相似文献

This first of two papers on ultrastructural observations of meiosis in the red alga Dasya baillouviana (Gmelin) Montague describes stages of prophase I of meiosis. Although the five stages of prophase were originally derived from light microscopic studies, the same stages were utilized for this study based on the developmental sequence of the synaptonemal complex, which has the same morphology and mode of development as those reported for other red algae. The cytoplasm in early prophase sporocytes was typically less electron dense than either vegetative cells or sporocytes in later stages of meiosis. The reduction in density suggests clearing of ribosomes and other cytoplasmic components prior to conversion from sporophyte to gametophyte control. Leptotene cells often had an amorphous, chromatin-free area, function unknown, which was not obviously associated with any specific nuclear region. Diplotene cells were characterized by nuclei containing prominent ring-shaped nucleoli composed of a dark staining ring of material surrounding an electron-translucent “vacuole.” Packets of electron-dense, fibrillar material were often noted in the cytoplasm of late prophase cells. These packets are thought to he “nuage,” a term applied to large cytoplasmic aggregations of RNA in germ cells of several other phyla. It is suggested that nuage may represent a new infusion of ribosomal and messenger RNA for post-meiotic development. The division pales are established by late prophase and a single polar ring is found within each large “exclusion zone” in close association with a pore-free area of nuclear envelope. Both annulate lamellae and small, numerous vesicles are located in the exclusion zones. The significance of the various aspects of prophase I is discussed with the overall observation that this phase of meiosis in red algae is very similar to the process in higher plant and animal cells.  相似文献

In November-December 2007 a widespread seabird mortality event occurred in Monterey Bay, California, USA, coincident with a massive red tide caused by the dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea. Affected birds had a slimy yellow-green material on their feathers, which were saturated with water, and they were severely hypothermic. We determined that foam containing surfactant-like proteins, derived from organic matter of the red tide, coated their feathers and neutralized natural water repellency and insulation. No evidence of exposure to petroleum or other oils or biotoxins were found. This is the first documented case of its kind, but previous similar events may have gone undetected. The frequency and amplitude of red tides have increased in Monterey Bay since 2004, suggesting that impacts on wintering marine birds may continue or increase.  相似文献

The chlorophyll c-containing algae comprise four major lineages: dinoflagellates, haptophytes, heterokonts, and cryptophytes. These four lineages have sometimes been grouped together based on their pigmentation, but cytological and rRNA data had suggested that they were not a monophyletic lineage. Some molecular data support monophyly of the plastids, while other plastid and host data suggest different relationships. It is uncontroversial that these groups have all acquired plastids from another eukaryote, probably from the red algal lineage, in a secondary endosymbiotic event, but the number and sequence of such event(s) remain controversial. Understanding chlorophyll c-containing plastid relationships is a first step towards determining the number of endosymbiotic events within the chromalveolates. We report here phylogenetic analyses using 10 plastid genes with representatives of all four chromalveolate lineages. This is the first organellar genome-scale analysis to include both haptophytes and dinoflagellates. Concatenated analyses support the monophyly of the chlorophyll c-containing plastids and suggest that cryptophyte plastids are the basal member of the chlorophyll c-containing plastid lineage. The gene psbA, which has at times been used for phylogenetic purposes, was found to differ from the other genes in its placement of the dinoflagellates and the haptophytes, and in its lack of support for monophyly of the green and red plastid lineages. Overall, the concatenated data are consistent with a single origin of chlorophyll c-containing plastids from red algae. However, these data cannot test several key hypothesis concerning chromalveolate host monophyly, and do not preclude the possibility of serial transfer of chlorophyll c-containing plastids among distantly related hosts.  相似文献

The rapid reaction kinetics of wild-type xanthine dehydrogenase from Rhodobacter capsulatus and variants at Arg-310 in the active site have been characterized for a variety of purine substrates. With xanthine as substrate, k(red) (the limiting rate of enzyme reduction by substrate at high [S]) decreased approximately 20-fold in an R310K variant and 2 x 10(4)-fold in an R310M variant. Although Arg-310 lies on the opposite end of the substrate from the C-8 position that becomes hydroxylated, its interaction with substrate still contributed approximately 4.5 kcal/mol toward transition state stabilization. The other purines examined fell into two distinct groups: members of the first were effectively hydroxylated by the wild-type enzyme but were strongly affected by the exchange of Arg-310 to methionine (with a reduction in k(red) greater than 10(3)), whereas members of the second were much less effectively hydroxylated by wild-type enzyme but also much less significantly affected by the amino acid exchanges (with a reduction in k(red) less than 50-fold). The effect was such that the 4000-fold range in k(red) seen with wild-type enzyme was reduced to a mere 4-fold in the R310M variant. The data are consistent with a model in which "good" substrates are bound "correctly" in the active site in an orientation that allows Arg-310 to stabilize the transition state for the first step of the overall reaction via an electrostatic interaction at the C-6 position, thereby accelerating the reaction rate. On the other hand, "poor" substrates bound upside down relative to this "correct" orientation. In so doing, they are unable to avail themselves of the additional catalytic power provided by Arg-310 in wild-type enzyme but, for this reason, are significantly less affected by mutations at this position. The kinetic data thus provide a picture of the specific manner in which the physiological substrate xanthine is oriented in the active site relative to Arg-310 and how this residue is used catalytically to accelerate the reaction rate (rather than simply bind substrate) despite being remote from the position that is hydroxylated.  相似文献

Summary The complete small ribosomal subunit RNA (srRNA) sequence was determined for the red algaPorphyra umbilicalis and the basidiomyceteLeucosporidium scottii, representing two taxa for which no srRNA sequences were hitherto known. These sequences were aligned with other published complete srRNA sequences of 58 eukaryotes. Evolutionary trees were reconstructed by a matrix optimization method from a dissimilarity matrix based on sections of the alignment that correspond to structurally conservative areas of the molecule that can be aligned unambiguously. The overall topology of the eukaryotic tree thus constructed is as follows: first there is a succession of early diverging branches, leading to a diplomonad, a microsporidian, a euglenoid plus kinetoplastids, an amoeba, and slime molds. Later, a nearly simultaneous radiation seems to occur into a number of taxa comprising the metazoa, the red alga, the sporozoa, the higher fungi, the ciliates, the green plants, plus some other less numerous groups. Because the red alga diverges late in the evolutionary tree, it does not seem to represent a very primitive organism as proposed on the basis of morphological and 5S rRNA sequence data. Asco- and basidiomycetes do not share a common ancestor in our tree as is generally accepted on the basis of conventional criteria. In contrast, when all alignment positions, rather than the more conservative ones, are used to construct the evolutionary tree, higher fungi do form a monophyletic cluster. The hypothesis that higher fungi and red algae might have shared a common origin has been put forward. Although the red alga and fungi seem to diverge at nearly the same time, no such relationship can be detected. The newly determined sequences can be fitted into a secondary structure model for srRNA, which is now relatively well established with the exception of uncertainties in a number of eukaryote-specific expansion areas. A specific structural model featuring a pseudoknot is proposed for one of these areas.  相似文献

BackgroundPanthothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) belongs to a group of hereditary neurodegenerative disorders known as neuroacanthocytosis (NA). This genetically heterogeneous group of diseases is characterized by degeneration of neurons in the basal ganglia and by the presence of deformed red blood cells with thorny protrusions, acanthocytes, in the circulation.ObjectiveThe goal of our study is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying this aberrant red cell morphology and the corresponding functional consequences. This could shed light on the etiology of the neurodegeneration.MethodsWe performed a qualitative and semi-quantitative morphological, immunofluorescent, biochemical and functional analysis of the red cells of several patients with PKAN and, for the first time, of the red cells of their family members.ResultsWe show that the blood of patients with PKAN contains not only variable numbers of acanthocytes, but also a wide range of other misshapen red cells. Immunofluorescent and immunoblot analyses suggest an altered membrane organization, rather than quantitative changes in protein expression. Strikingly, these changes are not limited to the red blood cells of PKAN patients, but are also present in the red cells of heterozygous carriers without neurological problems. Furthermore, changes are not only present in acanthocytes, but also in other red cells, including discocytes. The patients’ cells, however, are more fragile, as observed in a spleen-mimicking device.ConclusionThese morphological, molecular and functional characteristics of red cells in patients with PKAN and their family members offer new tools for diagnosis and present a window into the pathophysiology of neuroacanthocytosis.  相似文献

Surprisingly little is known about the role of acoustic cues in mammal female mate choice. Here, we examine the response of female red deer (Cervus elaphus) to male roars in which an acoustic cue to body size, the formants, has been re-scaled to simulate different size callers. Our results show that oestrous red deer hinds prefer roars simulating larger callers and constitute the first evidence that female mammals use an acoustic cue to body size in a mate choice context. We go on to suggest that sexual selection through female mating preferences may have provided an additional selection pressure along with male-male competition for broadcasting size-related information in red deer and other mammals.  相似文献
