The effect of oxygen concentration on the rate of CO2-uptake in continuous and intermittent light was studied as well as the CO2-fixation during a short dark period after light was turned off. In addition the dark respiration and the CO2-compensation point of attached and detached corn leaves were determined. Leaves of 4 to 22-day old plants were used as experimental material. A closed circuit system of an infrared carbon dioxide analyzer was employed to measure the rate of CO2-exchange. It was found that in an atmosphere consisting of 100 % oxygen, there was about 50 per cent inhibition of the rate of CO2-uptake in continuous and intermittent light compared to that in an atmosphere consisting of 21% oxygen. The same was true of the rate of CO2-fixation in darkness during a short period after the light was turned off. Since the response to oxygen concentration of the CO2-uptake in light and of the CO2-fixation in darkness after the light was turned off were similar, it is concluded that the fixation of CO2 in the short dark period represents an over- shoot of photosynthesis. The rate of dark respiration was little affected by the oxygen concentration in the ranges used in the experiments. The carbon dioxide compensation point which has been observed in leaves of 4 to 14-day old plants was not influenced by either oxygen concentration or light intensity. Since the changes in the rate of CO2-uptake due to changes in the concentration of oxygen and light intensity had no effect on the CO2-compensation point, it is concluded that a reabsorption of respiratory CO2 by photosynthesis could not account for the low value of this point. These results are interpreted as a further corroboration of the statement that the leaves of corn lack the process of photorespiration and that dark respiration is inhibited in light. It was observed that the rate of the CO2-uptake gradually increased in plants which were from 4 to 22-days old. The inhibitory effect of high concentration of oxygen on the rate of CO2-uptake was relatively higher in old plants than in young ones.  相似文献

In photothermal radiometry, heat radiation from an illuminated object, in synchronism with incident chopped light, is observed using an infrared detector with suitable electronics. By thus measuring the heat released during pulse-wise irradiation of leaves, conclusions can be drawn as to the gross efficiency of photosynthesis: More heat means less photochemically stored energy. Saturation of photosynthesis, by employing additional strong continuous-wave background light, affords an internal photothermal radiometry signal reference corresponding to the photochemical zero efficiency level, against which the signal in the absence of saturation can be compared. Through such means, gross energy storage efficiencies approaching 30% have been observed in Caragana arborescens Lam. at low light intensities. Several other examples are given, including measurements on dark-adapted leaves and leaves infiltrated with 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, to support our conclusion that photothermal radiometry provides a powerful new method for in vivo studies of photosynthesis in whole, attached leaves.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that photosynthesis can be feedback limited when the phosphate concentration cannot be both low enough to allow starch and sucrose synthesis at the required rate and high enough for ATP synthesis at the required rate. We have measured the concentration of phosphate in the stroma and cytosol of leaves held under feedback conditions. We used non-aqueous fractionation techniques with freeze-clamped leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris plants grown on reduced phosphate nutrition. Feedback was induced by holding leaves in low O2 or high CO2 partial pressure. We found 7 millimolar phosphate in the stroma of leaves in normal oxygen but just 2.7 millimolar phosphate in leaves held in low oxygen. Because 1 to 2 millimolar phosphate in the stroma may be metabolically inactive, we estimate that in low oxygen, the metabolically active pool of phosphate is between negligible and 1.7 millimolar. We conclude that halfway between these extremes, 0.85 millimolar is a good estimate of the phosphate concentration in the stroma of feedback-limited leaves and that the true concentration could be even lower. The stromal phosphate concentration was also low when leaves were held in high CO2, which also induces feedback-limited photosynthesis, indicating that the effect is related to feedback limitation, not to low oxygen per se. We conclude that the concentration of phosphate in the stroma is usually in excess and that it is sequestered to regulate photosynthesis, especially starch synthesis. The capacity for this regulation is limited by the coupling factor requirement for phosphate.  相似文献

The Effect of Temperature on the Photosynthesis of Ryegrass Canopies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In bright light, the rate of gross photosynthesis of ryegrasscanopies increased with increasing temperature between 10 and25 °C, in keeping with an increase in the photosynthesisof their constituent leaves. The increase in canopy gross photosynthesisoccurred irrespective of the leaf area index, which would affectthe proportion of the leaves in bright light. Because the responseof gross photosynthesis to temperature was similar to that ofrespiration, net photosynthesis also increased with temperature, irrespective of the relative magnitude of the two processes. However, these increases in photosynthesis were observed whilethe saturation deficit of water vapour was kept small (lessthan 3 g m–3). The photosynthesis of both leaves and canopieswas reduced when measured at a greater saturation deficit; indicatingthat the increasing saturation deficit, which frequently accompaniesincreasing temperature in the field, may obscure the effectof temperature on photosynthesis. Lack of control of saturationdeficit as measurement temperature is increased may explainwhy some workers have failed to detect a positive effect oftemperature on photosynthesis. Sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L.) infected with the Beet Yellows Virus exhibit lower rates of net photosynthesis at light saturation than do healthy plants. These Pn reductions were correlated with increases in leaf resistance to water vapor loss. Theoretical analyses demonstrated that, although the leaf resistance to water vapor loss increases could account for a major part of the net photosynthesis decreases, some other aspect of leaf functioning also was debilitated by infection. Both the levels and the activities of ribulose-1, 5-diP carboxylase were less on a leaf area basis in extracts from infected leaves than from healthy ones. Soluble carbohydrates accumulate in Beet Yellows Virus-infected leaves, but inhibiting translocation in several ways provided no evidence in support of the hypothesis that the accumulation of photosynthates in leaves has a direct, short term, feed-back effect upon the photosynthetic rate.  相似文献

The Effect of Oxygen Concentration on Photosynthesis in Higher Plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The influence of oxygen concentration in the range 0–21% on photosynthesis in intact leaves of a number of higher plants has been investigated. Photosynthetic Co2 fixation of higher plants is markedly inhibited by oxygen in concentrations down to less than 2%. The inhibition increases with oxygen concentration and is about 30% in an atmosphere of 21% O2 and 0.03% Co.2. Undoubtedly, therefore, oxygen in normal air exerts a strong inhibitory effect on photosynthetic Co2 fixation of land plants under natural conditions. The inhibitory effect of oxygen is rapidly produced and fully reversible. The degree of inhibition is independent of light intensity. The quantum yield for Co2 fixation, i.e. the slope of the linear part of the curve for Co2 uptake versus absorbed quanta, is inhibited to the same degree as the light saturated rate at all oxygen concentrations studied. Diverse species of higher plants, varying greatly in photosynthetic response to light intensity and Co2 concentration, and with light saturated roles of Co2 fixation differing by a factor of more than 10 times, show a remarkable similarity in their response to oxygen concentration. By contrast, when studied under the same conditions as the higher plants, the green algae Chlorella and Ulva did not show-any measurable inhibition of photosynthetic Co2 fixation. Similarity, the increase in fluorescence intensity with increasing oxygen concentrations found in higher plants also was not seen in Chlorella. The present results, together with previous data on the photosynthetic response of algae to oxygen concentration, indicate that the photosynthetic apparatus of higher plants differs considerably from that of algae in its sensitivity to oxygen. The inhibitory effect of oxygen on photosynthetic Co2 fixation in higher plants is somewhat higher at wavelengths which excite preferentially photosystem I. Also, the Emerson enhancement of Co2 fixation measured when a far red beam of low intensity is imposed on a background of red light is greater under low oxygen concontrution than under air. Measurements of reversible light-induced absorbance changes reveal that the change at 591 nm, probably caused by pla.stocyanin, is affected by oxygen concentration only if photosystem II is excited. the reducing effect on plastocyanin, caused by excitation of this system, decreases with increasing oxygen concentration. From these results it is suggested that a possible site of the inhibition by oxygen is in the electron carrier chain between the two photosystems. Oxygen might act as an electron acceptor at this site, causing reducing power to react back with molecular oxygen. However, this hypothesis does not account for equal inhibitions of the quantum yield and the light saturated rate of photosynthetic CO2 uptake. Through the photosynthetic process plants take up carbon dioxide and evolve oxygen. The present high concentration of molecular oxygen in the atmosphere is generally considered to have arisen from the activity of photo-synthetic organisms. The effect of oxygen concentration would seem, therefore, to he a problem of great interest, not only in the field of the biophysics and biochemistry of photosynthesis, but in ecology and other branches of biology as well. It was discovered by Warburg (1920) that high concentrations of oxygen inhibit the rate of photosynthetic oxygen evolution in the unicellular alga Chlorella. Since then, it has been confirmed by various authors that oxygen cconcentrations in the range 21–100 per cent have a marked inhibitory effect on photosynthesis, particularly at saturating light intensities. There is some evidence that under conditions when carbon dioxide concentration limits photosynthesis, the inhibition may become obvious even in 21 per cent oxygen. The inhibition has not been considered to operate at low light intensities. A review on the subject has been given by Turner and Brittain (1962). Various hypotheses have been put forward to explain the inhibitory effect of oxygen, commonly referred to as the Warhurg effect. Some authors favor the idea of enzyme inhibition; Turner et al. (1958) that one or more enzymes of the carbon reduction cycle are inactivated by oxygen: lirianlals (1962) that enzymes of the oxygen-evolving complex are inhihited. Other hypotheses concern back-reactions in which molecular oxygen is taken up, thus reversing the photosynthetic process. These reactions include photo-oxidation, photorespiration, and the Mehler reaction (Tamiya et al., 1957). At present, there is no generally accepted hypothesis explaining the effect. The often conflicting results on which these hypotheses were based have been obtained mostly on algae. The first observation of an inhibitory effect on photosynthesis in a higher plant was made hy McAlister and Myers (1940) in wheat leaves. They found that the photosyntlietic CO2 uptake was markedly lower in air than in an atmosphere of about 0.5 per cent oxygen. At the CO2 concentration used (0.03%) the inhibition was present both at high and moderate light intensities. No data were obtained at low light intensities. Although the study of the effect of oxygen concentration on photosynthesis in higher plants would seem to be of great interest, particularily since the natural environment of most land plants is an atmosphere with an oxygen content of 21 per cent, it has attracted very little attention. To the author's knowledge no thorough investigation on the subject has been published. The present investigalion is directed toward elucidatirng the photosynthetic response of higher plants to oxygen concentrations up to that of normal air. Data are presented showing that the photosynthetic CO2 fixation in intact leaves of higher plants, regardless of light intensity, is strongly inhibited by oxygen in normal air, and that the pholosynthetic response to oxygen differs considerably from that of green algae. Photosynthesis, photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry, photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle in the senescent flag leaves of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants grown in the field were investigated. Compared to the non-senescent leaves, photosynthetic capacity was significantly reduced in senescent flag leaves. The light intensity at which photosynthesis was saturated also declined significantly. The light response curves of PSII photochemistry indicate that a down-regulation of PSII photochemistry occurred in senescent leaves in particular at high light. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry in senescent flag leaves decreased slightly when measured at predawn but substantially at midday, suggesting that PSII function was largely maintained and photoinhibition occurred in senescent leaves when exposed to high light. At midday, PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centers decreased considerably, while non-photochemical quenching increased significantly. Moreover, compared with the values at early morning, a greater decrease in CO2 assimilation rate was observed at midday in senescent leaves than in control leaves. The levels of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin via the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin increased in senescent flag leaves from predawn to midday. An increase in the xanthophyll cycle pigments relative to chlorophyll was observed in senescent flag leaves. The results suggest that the xanthophyll cycle was activated in senescent leaves due to the decrease in CO2 assimilation capacity and the light intensity for saturation of photosynthesis and that the enhanced formation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin at high light may play an important role in the dissipation of excess light energy and help to protect photosynthetic apparatus from photodamage. Our results suggest that the well-known function of the xanthophyll cycle to safely dissipate excess excitation energy is also important for maintaining photosynthetic function during leaf senescence.  相似文献

The effects of oxygen concentration and light intensity on the rates of apparent photosynthesis, true photosynthesis, photorespiration and dark respiration of detached spruce twigs were determined by means of an infra-red carbon dioxide analyzer (IRCA). A closed circuit system IRCA was filled with either 1 per cent of oxygen in nitrogen, air (21 % O2) or pure oxygen (100 % O2). Two light intensities 30 × 103 erg · cm ?2· s?1 and 120 × 103 erg · cm?2· s?1 were applied. It has been found that the inhibitory effect of high concentration of oxygen on the apparent photosynthesis was mainly a result of a stimulation of the rate of CO2 production in light (photorespiration). In the atmosphere of 100 % O2, photorespiration accounts for 66–80 per cent of total CO2 uptake (true photosynthesis). Owing to a strong acceleration of photorespiration by high oxygen concentrations, the rate of true photosynthesis calculated as the sum of apparent photosynthesis and photorespiration was by several times less inhibited by oxygen than the rate of apparent photosynthesis. The rates of dark respiration were essentially unaffected by the oxygen concentrations used in the experiments. An increase in the intensity of light from 30 × 103 erg · cm?3· s?1 to 120 · 103 erg · cm?2· s?1 enhanced the rate of photorespiration in the atmospheres of 21 and 100 % oxygen but not in 1 % O2. The rate of apparent photosynthesis, however, was little affected by light intensity in an atmosphere of 1 % oxygen.  相似文献

Summary A model predicting net photosynthesis of individual plant leaves for a variety of environmental conditions has been developed. It is based on an electrical analogue describing gas diffusion from the free atmosphere to the sites of CO2 fixation and a Michaelis-Menten equation describing CO2 fixation. The model is presented in two versions, a simplified form without respiration and a more complex form including respiration. Both versions include terms for light and temperature dependence of CO2 fixation and light control of stomatal resistance. The second version also includes terms for temperature, light, and oxygen dependence of respiration and O2 dependence of CO2 fixation. The model is illustrated with curves based on representative values of the various environmental and biological parameters. These curves relate net photosynthesis to light intensity, [CO2], [O2], temperature, and resistances to CO2 uptake. The shape of the [CO2]-net photosynthesis curves depends on the total diffusion resistance to CO2 uptake and the Michaelis constant for CO2 uptake. The curves range from typical Michaelis-Menten to Blackman types. The model is combined with a model of leaf energy exchange permitting simultaneous estimation of net photosynthesis and transpiration. The combined model is illustrated with curves relating transpiration to photosynthesis under a wide variety of environmental conditions. Environmental regimes yielding maximum efficiency of water use are identified for the given assumptions and biological parameters.  相似文献

The assimilation of 14C-sodium bicarbonate has been measured in Scenedesmus obliquus as 1) photosynthesis, 2) photoreduction (light dependent incorporation of carbon dioxide by hydrogen adapted cells under conditions where photosynthesis is inoperative), and 3) the oxyhydrogen reaction (dark assimilation of carbon dioxide by hydrogen adapted cells in an atmosphere of hydrogen and 1% oxygen). Degradation of the glucose formed in each of these reactions using the Leuconostoc technique establishes the participation of the reductive pentose phosphate cycle.  相似文献

Rate of oxygen evolution in photosynthesis was measured as the current from a polarized platinum electrode covered by a thin layer of Chlorella. The arrangement gave a reproducibly measurable rate of photosynthesis proportional to light intensity at the low levels used and gave rapid response to changes in illumination. Two phenomena have been explored. The Emerson effect was observed as an enhancement of photosynthesis in long wavelength red light (700 mµ) when shorter wavelengths were added. Two light beams of wavelengths 653 and 700 mµ when presented together gave a photosynthetic rate about 25 per cent higher than the sum of the rates obtained separately. Large and reproducible transients in rate of oxygen evolution were observed accompanying change in illumination between two wavelengths adjusted in intensity to support equal steady rates of photosynthesis. The transients were found not to be specifically related to long wavelength red light. Both enhancement and the transients have identical action spectra which are interpreted as demonstrating a specific photochemical participation of chlorophyll b.  相似文献

Parasitic plants can adversely influence the growth of their hosts by removing resources and by affecting photosynthesis. Such negative effects depend on resource availability. However, at varied resource levels, to what extent the negative effects on growth are attributed to the effects on photosynthesis has not been well elucidated. Here, we examined the influence of nitrogen supply on the growth and photosynthesis responses of the host plant Mikania micrantha to infection by the holoparasite Cuscuta campestris by focusing on the interaction of nitrogen and infection. Mikania micrantha plants fertilized at 0.2, 1 and 5 mM nitrate were grown with and without C. campestris infection. We observed that the infection significantly reduced M. micrantha growth at each nitrate fertilization and more severely at low than at high nitrate. Such alleviation at high nitrate was largely attributed to a stronger influence of infection on root biomass at low than at high nitrate fertilization. However, although C. campestris altered allometry and inhibited host photosynthesis, the magnitude of the effects was independent of nitrate fertilizations. The infection reduced light saturation point, net photosynthesis at saturating irradiances, apparent quantum yield, CO2 saturated rate of photosynthesis, carboxylation efficiency, the maximum carboxylation rate of Rubisco, and maximum light-saturated rate of electron transport, and increased light compensation point in host leaves similarly across nitrate levels, corresponding to a similar magnitude of negative effects of the parasite on host leaf soluble protein and Rubisco concentrations, photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency and stomatal conductance across nitrate concentrations. Thus, the more severe inhibition in host growth at low than at high nitrate supplies cannot be attributed to a greater parasite-induced reduction in host photosynthesis, but the result of a higher proportion of host resources transferred to the parasite at low than at high nitrate levels.  相似文献

Heterotrophy is known to stimulate calcification of scleractinian corals, possibly through enhanced organic matrix synthesis and photosynthesis, and increased supply of metabolic DIC. In contrast to the positive long-term effects of heterotrophy, inhibition of calcification has been observed during feeding, which may be explained by a temporal oxygen limitation in coral tissue. To test this hypothesis, we measured the short-term effects of zooplankton feeding on light and dark calcification rates of the scleractinian coral Galaxea fascicularis (n = 4) at oxygen saturation levels ranging from 13 to 280%. Significant main and interactive effects of oxygen, heterotrophy and light on calcification rates were found (three-way factorial repeated measures ANOVA, p<0.05). Light and dark calcification rates of unfed corals were severely affected by hypoxia and hyperoxia, with optimal rates at 110% saturation. Light calcification rates of fed corals exhibited a similar trend, with highest rates at 150% saturation. In contrast, dark calcification rates of fed corals were close to zero under all oxygen saturations. We conclude that oxygen exerts a strong control over light and dark calcification rates of corals, and propose that in situ calcification rates are highly dynamic. Nevertheless, the inhibitory effect of heterotrophy on dark calcification appears to be oxygen-independent. We hypothesize that dark calcification is impaired during zooplankton feeding by a temporal decrease of the pH and aragonite saturation state of the calcifying medium, caused by increased respiration rates. This may invoke a transient reallocation of metabolic energy to soft tissue growth and organic matrix synthesis. These insights enhance our understanding of how oxygen and heterotrophy affect coral calcification, both in situ as well as in aquaculture.  相似文献

The effect of black bean aphids on the photosynthesis of sugar beet plants was studied under glasshouse and field conditions. The presence of up to several hundred aphids per leaf had no significant effect on CO2 exchange rates over a range of light intensities between complete darkness and light saturation. Artificially prepared honeydew, sprayed onto leaves in the same amounts and composition as was found on severely aphid-infested plants, covered 30% of the stomata on the upper epidermis but did not significantly alter the rate of photosynthesis of these leaves in the light or the rate of respiration in the dark. The stomata on the lower epidermis were uncovered and functional. High pressure liquid chromatography of aphid-produced honeydew detected 20 different amino-acids. Three amino-acids, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and gluta-mine, made up the bulk of the amino-acid weight in the honeydew produced on young plants, up till the 8 leaf-stage. In the 10 to 12 leaf-stage, several different amino-acids occurred in substantial amounts. The amino-acids to sugars ratio of the honeydew produced by the aphids decreased strongly as the sugar beet plants aged: from 1:6 in plants with 3 or 4 leaves to 1:25 in plants having 10 to 12 leaves.  相似文献

A dependence of the photosynthesis rate on light is characterized by a number of parameters that are often used for comparison between plant species or for finding photosynthesis interconnections with other physiological processes. In order to properly assessed these parameters, we measured the maximum apparent photosynthesis rate (P max), dark respiration rate (R d), light compensation point (LCP), quantum yield corresponding to photosynthetic efficiency (QY), and the light saturation constant (K s), taking into consideration the leaf plastochron index during vegetation of one of the willow species (Salix dasyclados Wimn.). The P max value was the highest in the beginning of the growth season when the leaf reached 65% of its full area; after that P max slowly declined. The most important cardinal value for R d is its plateau reached by the end of leaf growth, i.e., later than the photosynthesis rate maximum. This plateau value also decreased during vegetation. The LCP value changed in the same way as R d but reached its plateau simultaneously with the photosynthesis rate maximum. QY also reached its maximum at the same time with the photosynthesis rate; during vegetation it changed more than twofold. The K s value also changed almost twofold during the season, reaching its maximum together or slightly later than the photosynthesis maximum and then remained constant. Thus, we have found significant changes in the parameters of the photosynthesis light curve during growth season. This shows that they can be used only after a thorough study of leaf development in each particular plant species. Usually performed measuring gas exchange parameters in fully developed leaves does not yield their maximum values and thus does not have any physiological sense.  相似文献

Net photosynthesis and CO production were measured in cell suspensions of Chlorella fusca. The rate of net photosynthesis showed saturation curves with increasing radiation intensities and CO2-mixing ratios. Maximum rates were found at 35° C with a sharp decrease at higher temperatures. By contrast, the rate of CO production was proportional to the radiation intensity and did not show any saturation up to 1.5 kW · m?2 white light. The CO-production rate was higher in blue than in red light and was independent of the CO2-mixing ratio of the carrier gas within a range of 0–1000 ppmv. We found that the CO-production rate was constant within the physiological temperature range of 10–35° C, but increased considerably at higher temperatures and that CO production by the chlorophyll-deficient mutant of C. fusca was 5 times that of the wild type. In addition, we measured CO production in cell suspensions of Chromatium vinosum, Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides and Rhodopseudomonas acidophila, which were grown either anaerobically in the light or aerobically in the dark. CO production could only be observed when the cells were incubated in the presence of oxygen and light. Under these conditions more CO was produced by aerobically grown cells than by phototrophically grown cells of R. sphaeroides and R. acidophila. The results obtained indicate that CO was produced by photosensitized oxidations and not by metabolic processes.  相似文献

The biological yield is bound up with photosynthesis. Though the air temperature on Qinghai plateau is very low, yet the intense solar radiation on the plateau and of the long sunshine hours are favourable to photosynthesis. While the air temperature is very high, it may cause the photosynthesis to midday depression in the areas of low elevation. However, this does not occur on alpine meadow in Qinghai plateau. Diurnal variation of net photosynthetic rate(Pn) of plant leaves in alpine meadow under natural environmental conditions depends on the change of air temperature and solar radiation intensity. It gives a typical curve with one peak. None or little midday depression of net photosynthetic rate was observed. The apparent quantum requirement(AQR) of plant leaves in alpine meadow under natural environmental conditions remains constant in the morning and afternoon on fine days, which indicated that no significant photoinhibition occurred. However, diurnal variation of net photosynthetic rate of plateau plant still revealed as of double peak when soil is seriously lack of water and air temperature is 30℃ or over. Under general conditions, the light compensation point and dark respiration rate in plant of alpine meadow are lower. The light saturation point and the apparent quantum requirement are higher; Therefore the apparent quantum efficiency is lower. This is related to low atmospheric pressure in the areas of high elevation on Qinghai plateau.  相似文献

1. Chlorella pyrenoidosa has been grown in a continuous-culture apparatus under various light intensities provided by incandescent lamps, other conditions of culture being maintained constant. Light intensity curves for cells immersed in the No. 11 Warburg buffer and in Knop''s solution + 4.4 per cent CO2 at a saturating light intensity were determined as characteristics of the photosynthetic mechanism. These characteristics were referred to the centrifuged cell volume as an index of quantity of cellular material. 2. Cells grown at intensities in the range of about 35 f.-c. develop a capacity for a high rate of photosynthesis (c.mm. O2/hour/c.mm. cells). At culture intensities above or below this range the cells produced have a lower capacity for photosynthesis. A similar effect is observed for rate of photosynthesis per unit dry weight or rate per unit cell nitrogen. 3. The rate of photosynthesis per cell or rate per unit chlorophyll shows no maximum at any light intensity of culture but increases continuously throughout the range of light intensities studied. 4. Maximum rate of growth is attained at a light intensity of about 100 f.-c. The hypothesis is advanced that at culture intensities above that needed to give maximum rate of growth (100 f.-c.) a mechanism is developed which opposes the photosynthetic process and removes the photosynthetic products. 5. The low capacity for photosynthesis shown by cells grown at culture intensities below 35 f.-c. finds no immediate explanation. 6. The shape of the light intensity curve is markedly affected by the light intensity at which the cells have been cultured. Cells grown at lower intensities give light intensity curves approaching the Blackman type with a short transitional region between light limitation and light saturation.  相似文献
