Plasma FSH and LH in prepubertal Booroola ewe lambs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Basal plasma concentrations (four 30-min samples) and GnRH-induced release of gonadotrophins were measured every 15 days between 30 and 90 days and at 110 days of age in Merino ewe lambs from the prolific Booroola ('B') flock (n = 18-23), the medium prolificacy ('T') flock (n = 14-20), and the 'O' flock (n = 4-8) of low prolificacy. At ages of 30 and 45 days B ewe lambs had mean basal plasma FSH concentrations of 145 and 122 ng/ml which were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those seen in T (45 and 53 ng/ml), and O (39 and 38 ng/ml) flock ewes. Between 60 and 110 days of age there were no significant differences between genotypes. The increment in FSH concentrations above basal levels induced by the subcutaneous injection of 100 micrograms synthetic GnRH was only significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in B than T and O genotype ewe lambs at 110 days of age but not at other ages. The basal plasma FSH differences between the B, T and O genotypes at 30 and 45 days of age were not consistently related to the size of litter in which lambs were born. At 30 days of age the mean plasma LH concentration of B, T, and O flock lambs were 2.6 +/- 0.5, 1.2 +/- 0.6 and 0.7 +/- 0.8 ng/ml respectively. These differences were not significant. At later ages there were also no significant differences between the genotypes with respect to basal LH, and the increase in LH induced by exogenous GnRH was always similar for the three genotypes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Blood samples were collected from adult Soay rams at frequent intervals during the regressed, developing and active phases of the sexual cycle, or after i.v. injections of synthetic LH-RH or standard preparations of ovine FSH and LH, and were assayed for FSH, LH and testosterone. The highest FSH and LH levels occurred during the developing stage of the cycle, and the highest testosterone levels during the active stage. At each phase there were conspicuous short-term fluctuations in the concentrations of all three hormones, and episodic peaks of plasma LH were associated with increases in both FSH and testosterone. Synthetic LH-RH (5 microgram) induced a rise in the plasma values of FSH and LH at all stages and the magnitude and duration of the response could be predicted from a knowledge of the endogenous short-term fluctuations. When 50--250 ng LH-RH were given i.v. plasma LH increased in a way similar to that occurring spontaneously. The ratio of FSH:LH released after LH-RH changed with the stage of the sexual cycle, but the clearance rate of the two hormones was not affected. These findings are consistent with the control of FSH and LH by a single releasing hormone which is secreted in pulses. The different temporal patterns in the circulating FSH and LH result from differences in secretion and clearance.  相似文献

The reproductive efficiency of the entire sheep flock could be improved if ewe lambs go through puberty early and produce their first lamb at 1 year of age. The onset of puberty is linked to the attainment of critical body mass, and therefore we tested whether it would be influenced by genetic selection for growth rate or for rate of accumulation of muscle or fat. We studied 136 Merino ewe lambs with phenotypic values for depth of eye muscle (EMD) and fat (FAT) and Australian Sheep Breeding Values at post-weaning age (200 days) for live weight (PWT), eye muscle depth (PEMD) and fat depth (PFAT). First oestrus was detected with testosterone-treated wethers and then entire rams as the ewes progressed from 6 to 10 months of age. Blood concentrations of leptin and IGF-I were measured to test whether they were related to production traits and reproductive performance (puberty, fertility and reproductive rate). In total, 97% of the lambs reached first oestrus at average weight 39.4 ± 0.4 kg (mean ± s.e.m.) and age 219 days (range 163 to 301). Age at first oestrus decreased with increases in values for PWT (P < 0.001), and concentrations of IGF-I (P < 0.05) and leptin (P < 0.01). The proportion of ewe lambs that achieved puberty was positively related with increases in values for EMD (P < 0.01), FAT (P < 0.05) or PWT (P < 0.01), and 75% of the ewe lambs were pregnant at average weight 44.7 ± 0.5 kg and age 263 days (range 219 to 307). Ewe lambs that were heavier at the start of mating were more fertile (P < 0.001) and had a higher reproductive rate (P < 0.001). Fertility and reproductive rate were positively correlated with increases in values for EMD (P < 0.01), FAT (P < 0.05), PWT (P < 0.01) and leptin concentration (P < 0.01). Fertility, but not reproductive rate, increased as values for PFAT increased (P < 0.05). Leptin concentration increased with increases in values for EMD (P < 0.001), FAT (P < 0.001), PWT (P < 0.001), PEMD (P < 0.05) and PFAT (P < 0.05). Many of these relationships became non-significant when PWT or live weight was added to the statistical model. We conclude that selection for genetic potential for growth can accelerate the onset of puberty and increase fertility and reproductive rate of Merino ewe lambs. The metabolic hormones, IGF-I and leptin, might act as a physiological link between the growing tissues and the reproductive axis.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to describe the genetic and phenotypic relationship between milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and reproductive traits in Iranian Holstein dairy cows. Test-day MUN data obtained from 57 301 dairy cows on 20 large dairy herds in Iran between January 2005 and June 2009. Genetic parameters for MUN and reproductive traits were estimated with a five-trait model using ASREML program. Random regression test-day models were used to estimate heritabilities separately for MUN from first, second and third lactations. Regression curves were modeled using Legendre polynomials of order 3. Herd-year-season along with age at calving was included as fixed effects in all models for reproductive traits. Heritabilities for MUN and reproductive traits were estimated separately for first lactation, second lactation and third lactation. The estimated heritabilities for MUN varied from 0.18 to 0.22. The heritability estimate was low for reproductive traits, which ranged from 0.02 to 0.06 for different traits and across parities. Except for days open, phenotypic and genetic correlations of MUN with reproductive performance traits were close to zero. Genetic correlations between MUN and days open were 0.23, 0.35 and 0.45 in first, second and third lactation, respectively. However, the phenotypic correlation between MUN at different parities was moderate (0.28 to 0.35), but the genetic correlation between MUN at different parities was high and ranged from 0.84 to 0.97. This study shows a limited application of MUN for use in selection programs to improve reproductive performance.  相似文献

Twenty-four 6-mo-old ewe lambs received one of two ovine prolactin (oPRL) treatments 28 d before fall breeding. Beginning on the first day of treatment (Day 0), 12 lambs received a subcutaneous injection (12 ml) of a carrier vehicle (0 mg oPRL) on alternate days for 28 d while 12 lambs received injections containing 5 mg oPRL. On Days 0 and 28, jugular blood was collected from six lambs in each group before treatment and at 30-min intervals for 6 h thereafter. Neither feed intake, efficiency of gain nor animal weights differed (P > 0.20) between groups. One hour after treatment on Day 0, ewe lambs receiving 5 mg oPRL had greater (P < 0.10) serum PRL levels than did controls (121.9 and 61.5 +/- 24.7 ng/ml, respectively). Differences in serum PRL persisted throughout remaining sampling intervals on both Days 0 and 28. Serum samples obtained on alternate days during the 28-d treatment period revealed no differences (P > 0.20) in PRL concentrations between control (48.3 +/- 5.3 ng/ml) and oPRL-treated (55.7 +/- 5.3 ng/ml) ewes. Neither serum insulin nor growth hormone responded (P > 0.05) to exogenous oPRL on either Day 0 or 28. No difference (P > 0.30) in percentage of ewe lambs cycling during treatment or breeding was detected between groups. Subsequent lambing percentages were similar (P > 0.30), with 36.4% of control and 25.0% of oPRL-treated ewes producing offspring. Administering 5 mg oPRL on alternate days for 28 d before breeding did not enhance growth and(or) reproductive performance in virgin ewe lambs.  相似文献

Several studies suggest that the concentration of immunoreactive (I) FSH measured in peripheral plasma by radioimmunoassay does not always reflect the level of bioactive (B) hormone capable of eliciting a biological response (e.g. oestradiol synthesis by Sertoli cells in vitro). The aim of this study was to measure both B-FSH and I-FSH concentrations in male and female sheep during the first year of life, and to relate this to pubertal development. The hypothesis being tested was that B-FSH is present in both male and female sheep during the prepubertal period and that discrete changes in B-FSH are associated with the onset of puberty. Eight ewe lambs and eight ram lambs were blood sampled fortnightly from 2 to 52 weeks of age. All samples were assayed for B-FSH and I-FSH content. Pubertal development was monitored in ewe lambs from behavioural oestrus and from plasma progesterone concentrations, and in ram lambs from penile and testicular development and from plasma testosterone concentrations. Mean I-FSH concentrations varied significantly with time after birth, in both females and males (P<0.01). In contrast, B-FSH was found to vary with time in females only (P<0.01). Around the expected time of puberty in ram lambs (i.e. at 30–40 weeks of age), and thereafter, I-FSH concentrations were undetectable (<0.2 ng ml−1), whereas the B-FSH concentrations were measurable at concentrations up to twice the assay detection limit (0.8 ng ml−1) until 38 weeks of age. In ewe lambs, but not ram lambs, there was a significant linear relationship between B-FSH and I-FSH values (R=0.595; P<0.005). When standardised about the time of puberty, B-FSH (P<0.05) but not I-FSH was significantly higher in ewe lambs that failed to reach puberty. No differences for either B-FSH or I-FSH between pubertal and non-pubertal ram lambs were noted. In summary, B-FSH was often measurable in plasma throughout prepubertal development in sheep and the concentrations often differed from those of I-FSH, especially in ram lambs. However, there appeared to be no discrete changes in B-FSH that could be directly related to specific pubertal events. It is concluded that although FSH may be a prerequisite for prepubertal testicular development and/or ovarian follicular growth, it is not a critical factor in determining whether puberty is attained during the first year of life in this seasonally breeding species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic relationship between postweaning weight gain (PWG), heifer pregnancy (HP), scrotal circumference (SC) at 18 months of age, stayability at 6 years of age (STAY) and finishing visual score at 18 months of age (PREC), and to determine the potential of these traits as selection criteria for the genetic improvement of growth and reproduction in Nellore cattle. The HP was defined as the observation that a heifer conceived and remained pregnant, which was assessed by rectal palpation at 60 days. The STAY was defined as whether or not a cow calved every year up to the age of 6 years, given that she was provided the opportunity to breed. The Bayesian linear-threshold analysis via the Gibbs sampler was used to estimate the variance and covariance components applying a multitrait model. Posterior mean estimates of direct heritability were 0.15 ± 0.00, 0.42 ± 0.02, 0.49 ± 0.01, 0.11 ± 0.01 and 0.19 ± 0.00 for PWG, HP, SC, STAY and PREC, respectively. The genetic correlations between traits ranged from 0.17 to 0.62. The traits studied generally have potential for use as selection criteria in genetic breeding programs. The genetic correlations between all traits show that selection for one of these traits does not imply the loss of the others.  相似文献

Weaned Romney ewe lambs were grazed at two levels of nutrition from 20 December to 12 April. Both groups were grazed together at a high level of nutrition thereafter. Vasectomized rams were introduced on 1 April. Oestrus occurred in 62/84 (74%) of the low nutrition group and in all 24 of the high nutrition group. The mean date of first oestrus was 3 June for the former and 28 May for the latter. The non-oestrous ewes were killed on 17 July and the others within 5 days of showing oestrus. From each carcass, certain organs (i.e. adrenals, ovaries, thyroid, heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, spleen, stomach and uterus) and various fat depots were dissected out and weighed. In addition, half of the carcass was minced and subsampled for protein and fat analysis. The weight of uterus discriminated between oestrous and non-oestrous animals, as did a linear combination of the weights of lungs, spleen and stomach. The data suggest that fatness or protein content, or the weights of the other organs, are not important indicators of sexual maturity in female sheep.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of a single intramuscular injection of 200 IU hCG (Chorulon) on Day 12 post-mating on ovarian function and subsequent lambing performance in ewes and ewe lambs bred at synchronised oestrus during the breeding season and on the lambing performance of ewes induced to breed during late anoestrus. All animals were mated to rams at synchronised oestrus and on Day 12 post-mating given normal saline or 200 IU hCG.In Experiment 1, laparoscopic results showed that hCG treatment induced accessory corpora lutea in ewes (control = 0/7; hCG = 5/7) but not in ewe lambs (control = 0/7; hCG = 0/7).In Experiment 2, hCG treatment did not improve the lambing rate (control = 50; hCG = 57) or the litter size (control = 1.80; hCG = 1.96) in ewes (control = 100; hCG = 91). However, hCG treatment significantly (P > 0.05) improved the lambing rate (control = 29; hCG = 58; P < 0.05) in ewes conceiving at the first oestrus after treatment. hCG treatment (control = 42; hCG = 42) also failed to improve the lambing rate in ewe lambs (control = 48; hCG = 41).In Experiment 3, hCG treatment had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on the lambing rate (control = 72; hCG = 62) or the litter size (control = 1.59; hCG = 1.58) in ewes (control = 111; hCG = 115) induced to breed during anoestrus or on ewes returning to oestrus and conceiving after treatment (lambing rate: control = 86; hCG = 72; litter size: control = 1.44; hCG = 1.35). In conclusion, the data obtained in this study suggest that during the breeding season hCG may, by stimulating ovarian function, improve embryo survival in ewes conceiving at the first post-treatment oestrus. This effect, however was not observed in ewe lambs.  相似文献

The effect of dose of pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on the reproductive performance of adult ewes and ewe lambs and lamb survival at birth after treatment with fluorogestone acetate (FGA)-impregnated intravaginal sponges and PMSG (250 IU or 500 IU) to synchronize estrus was evaluated. Ewes were exposed to rams for breeding at the synchronized and subsequent estrous cycles. The flock, comprised of three synthetic strains and two control breeds, was maintained in a controlled environment and exposed to an artificial light regimen which alternated at 4-mo intervals from 16h of light daily to 9h of light daily. Trials were conducted during January, May and September at the end of a 9-h daylength cycle. Adult ewes were bred in May and 8 mo later in January. Ewe lambs were bred in September at 6.5 to 7.5 mo of age. The overall reproductive performance of the adult ewes was similar at the two breedings: fertility approximately 90%, prolificacy approximately 2.7, fecundity approximately 240% and lambs born alive approximately 2.4. Dosage of PMSG had no effect. Reproductive performance of ewe lambs was lower and there was a strain x treatment interaction, suggesting greater variability in response. The results indicate there is no advantage to using a higher dose of PMSG in ewes with a natural relatively high fecundity. Moreover, the use of the artificial photoperiod appears to overcome the natural seasonal variation in reproductive performance.  相似文献

The cause of fertility differences between ewe lambs and adult ewes following natural oestrus were studied in Romneys. Insemination was determined by anterior vaginal swabbing. Fertilized ewe-lamb ova were returned to donor animals along with one matched fertilized adult ewe ovum and lambings were recorded. Ewe-lamb ova were less likely (P<0.01) to survive to term compared with adult ewe ova. Insemination failure, fertilization failure and anovular oestrus were minor sources of reproductive wastage. It is concluded that reduced ovum quality appears to be the major cause of the lower fertility in naturally ovulating ewe lambs compared with adult ewes.  相似文献

PRL plasma levels and FSH and LH pituitary reserve were tested in ten apparently healthy male subjects. A good correlation was found between PRL on one hand and FSH plasma levels (p less than 0,05), LH plasma levels (p less than 0,01) and FSH pituitary reserve (p less than 0,01) on the other hand. This seems to support the current hypothesis that prolactin may cause a progressive clinically latent impairment in the spermatogenetic function of the testis. Further evidence is needed.  相似文献

Twenty-four Rambouillet ewe lambs (average weight=43.7+/-1.2 kg, approximately 6 months of age) were used to examine the effect of thyroid suppression before the onset of puberty on serum thyroid hormones, body weights (BW), and reproductive performance. Beginning in early September, ewe lambs were randomly assigned to three treatments (n=8 lambs/treatment). All animals remained in a single pen (4 x 12 m) with access to salt, water, shade and alfalfa hay (2.5 kg per animal per day) throughout the experiment. Beginning on Day 0 (first day of treatment), all ewe lambs received daily treatments (gavage) for 15 days consisting of 0, 20, or 40 mg 6-N-propyl-2-thiouracil(PTU)/kg BW per day. Beginning on Day 15, the 20 and 40 mg treatments were lowered to 10 and 20 mg PTU/kg BW, respectively. All animals were treated for 28 days. Ovarian cyclicity was determined by twice weekly progesterone (P(4)) analysis. Thyroxine (T(4)) concentrations were similar on Day 0 (61.6, 54.8 and 56.9+/-2.5 ng/ml, P=0.17) in ewe lambs receiving 0, 20 and 40 mg PTU/kg BW, respectively. By Day 7, both PTU-treated groups had T(4) values less than 20 ng/ml (9.0 and 15.4+/-2.5 ng/ml) compared with 78.5 ng/ml in controls (P<0.01). By 7 days after termination of PTU treatment, serum T(4) had risen to 29.1 and 26.9 (+/-2.9)ng/ml in the 20/10 and 40/20 PTU groups, respectively. On Day 66, control ewes had 55.0 ng T(4)/ml compared with 43.1 and 39.0 (+/-2.6 ng/ml) for ewes in the 20/10 and 40/20 groups, respectively (linear, P<0.01). Serum triiodothyronine (T(3)) followed a similar pattern to that observed for T(4). Ewe lamb BW were similar (P>0.50) among groups throughout the treatment period. However, following the treatment, PTU-treated ewes tended (P<0.10) to weigh less than controls. Average Julian day of puberty was also similar (P>0.50) among treatments (286, 288 and 288+/-5 days; control, 20/10 and 40/20, respectively). Control ewes had a pregnancy rate of 75%, while both PTU-treated groups had pregnancy rates of 88% (P>0.20). The administration of PTU resulted in a rapid decline in serum T(4) and T(3) but neither time of puberty nor pregnancy rates were affected by lowered thyroid hormones.  相似文献

Peripheral plasma progesterone and oestrogen concentrations were measured during late pregnancy and the parturient period in 12 ewes producing live lambs and three others producing stillborn lambs. Progesterone values started declining by 10 days before lambing but at minus 24 hours were still 6.1 +/- 3 ng/ml in the ewes bearing live lambs; during the last 24 hours progesterone was significantly lower in the ewes producing stillborn lambs. Oestrogens reached a maximum level of 550 +/- 280 pg/ml at the time of delivery and declined rapidly to basal values shortly after lambing. Oestrogens did not rise at lambing in the ewes producing stillborn lambs. In seven of the 12 ewes bearing live lambs, uterine activity, as determined by intrauterine pressure changes, was recorded throughout parturition and compared with the plasma values for progesterone and oestrogens. It was found that there was a highly significant positive correlation between uterine activity and plasma oestrogen concentrations, and a highly significant negative correlation between uterine activty and both plasma progesterone concentrations and the progesterone: oestrogen ratio.  相似文献

Forty-four 6-mo-old, fine-wool ewe lambs were randomly allotted to one of three triiodothyronine (T(3)) treatment groups (14 or 15 ewe lambs/group). Treatments (0, 200, and 400 mug T(3)) were administered daily by subcutaneous injection during a 30-d treatment period in September. Following the treatments, ewe lambs were allowed to mate with Debouillet rams during a 34-d breeding season. Animal weights did not differ (P > 0.10) among treatment groups throughout the study. However, ewe lambs receiving 400 mug T(3)/d gained less (P < 0.05) during the treatment period than did those receiving 200 mug T(3)/d or controls. Grease fleece weights (6-mo clip) were similar (P > 0.10) among treatment groups. Serum growth hormone (GH) values in blood samples collected on Days 7 and 28 of the 30-d treatment were similar (P > 0.10) before treatments were administered and on Day 7 after treatments were administered. However, on Day 28 after treatments were administered, serum GH was lower (P < 0.01) in ewe lambs receiving 400 mug T(3)/d (1.5 ng/ml) than in those receiving 200 mug/d (2.1 ng/ml) or controls (2.2 ng/ml). Ovarian cyclicity was determined by monitoring serum progesterone. Forty percent of control ewe lambs were determined to have cycled during treatment compared with 20% of those receiving 200 mug T(3)/day and none of those receiving 400 mug T(3)/d (P < 0.10). Pregnancy rates were lower (P < 0.10) in ewe lambs receiving 400 mug T(3)/d (29%) compared with those receiving 200 mug T(3)/d (60%) or controls (66.7%). Day of conception, lambs born/ewe exposed, lambs born/ewe lambing, and lambs weaned/ewe lambing did not differ (P > 0.10) among treatments. Preweaning performance of offspring was not altered by maternal treatment with 200 or 400 mug T(3)/d (P > 0.10). These data indicate that 200 and 400 mug T(3)/d will not enhance GH production or improve reproductive performance of ewe lambs.  相似文献

Prepuberal gilts reared and managed to 85-90 kg live weight in a common system were allocated at random to one of three first-mating treatments in an experiment conducted over a period of more than 5 years. In two of the treatments, gilts received a single i.m. injection of 400 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and 200 IU human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (PG600; Intervet) and were either inseminated 4 and 5 days later on a fixed-time basis regardless of oestrus (treatment A), or at the second oestrus following treatment (treatment B). The third group of gilts remained untreated and was inseminated on the first spontaneous oestrus (treatment C). Thereafter, all gilts were managed in the same way and those observed in oestrus were re-inseminated. Significantly more gilts returned to oestrus after the first service in treatment A (35%) than in treatment B and C (12 and 17%, respectively; P<0.01). Gilts farrowed to the first or repeat inseminations at a significantly younger age (P<0.01) in treatment A (304 days) than treatment B (324 days) and C (320 days). The age difference at farrowing remained in surviving gilts at the end of their third parity. The first farrowing performance of the gilts was significantly affected by treatment in terms of litter size at birth (A 7.0, B 8.4 and C 8.3 live piglets per gilt; P<0.01), litter size at weaning (A 6.2, B 7.2 and C 7.2 live piglets per gilt, P<0.05), and piglet birth weight (A 1.4, B 1.3 and C 1.3 kg; P<0.05) but piglet survival rate and weaning weight were not affected by treatment. The live weights of the gilts were significantly different between the treatments at first insemination (A 95.7, B 106.5 and C 109.2 kg; P<0.01) but not when the first litter was weaned (A 133.6, B 135.1 and C 136.6; P>0.05). After the first farrowing there were no differences between the treatments in terms of the survival rate, productive or reproductive performance of the gilts/sows and their offspring. Without conducting a detailed cost-benefit-calculation it was deduced that, from an economical point of view, differences between treatment A and treatments B and C are negligible because the savings associated with farrowing at a younger age on this treatment just about compensated for any additional costs associated with the treatment and the lower number of piglets born at the first farrowing.  相似文献

The relationships between several rabbit buck semen traits, concerning either the ejaculate or the dose inseminated (volume, mass motility, pH, percentage of motile sperm (PMS), concentration, number of total and motile sperm per ejaculate and per insemination dose) and the reproductive performance of does was investigated in 839 inseminations involving 54 bucks and 111 does. Four genetic types were involved: INRA1601 strain (A), INRA2066 strain (B) and the two reciprocal crossbreds (AB and BA). The mating design was A x A, B x B, (AB or BA) x (AB or BA). Semen was diluted (1:9) and a constant volume of 0.5 ml was inseminated 2-4h after collection. Therefore, the total number of spermatozoa per dose was variable and proportional to the initial concentration. Mass motility significantly influenced the kindling rate. Taken separately, volume, PMS and concentration did not influence the kindling rate but their product, the number of motile sperm per ejaculate, did. Litter size (total born) was significantly influenced by concentration and all variables depending on it, particularly the number of total and motile sperm per dose. However, reproductive performances were predominantly influenced by the physiological status of the does at insemination (lactation stage and receptivity).  相似文献

Ewe lambs of the Ethiopian Menz breed were assigned at weaning (90+/-3 days) to four levels of nutrition (poor, low, medium and high) to achieve different premating growth rates with or without treatment for endoparasites. A concentrate mixture providing 2.5 Mcal/kg dry matter (DM) metabolizable energy and 15.2 g/kg DM digestible protein was used. Improved nutrition increased lamb postweaning average daily weight gain up to puberty by 6 to 26 g/day and the conception rate to first estrus by 9 to 16% while it reduced the mortality rate by 24 to 31% and age at first lambing by 2 to 5 months. Lambs reached puberty (age at first estrus) at 16.9+/-0.1 kg (+/-SEM) or 60% of mature body weight and 350+/-12 days of age. The onset of puberty was advanced by weaning weight (P<0.05), itself being well correlated with birth weight (r = 0.51, P<0.001), and by level of nutrition (high=299+/-19, medium=301+/-18, low=383+/-23 and poor=454+/-31 days, P<0.001) through enhanced growth rate (r = -0.82, P<0.001). No independent effect of drenching for endoparasites on pubertal development was observed (P>0.05), but its interaction with season-of-birth improved the growth of lambs born during the period of short rains (P<0.05). Overall mean litter size at first lambing was 1.07; the twinning rate was 6.5% and the birth weight was 1.9+/-0.1 kg. Up to 13.4% of newborn lambs, averaging 1.3+/-0.6 kg, died on the day of parturition. The results indicate that improved growth rate and body weight, resulting from better postweaning nutrition, affects the attainment of puberty in Menz ewe lambs. Mitigation of nutrition stress and endoparasitic infection depending on season-of-birth would thus increase the annual reproductive rate of breeding ewes and flock productivity.  相似文献
