Relationships between weight (W; dry weight) and length (L; head capsule width or total body length) were examined in 25 freshwater macro-invertebrates at species level and four at order level using the formula W = aLb. Our estimates at the order level dropped into the range of those in North America, Europe, New Zealand, and previous studies in Japan with the exception of Trichoptera. Differences encountered in Trichoptera may be due to high interspecific variation in length-mass relationships and size-range of component taxa. In addition, our results show that the relationships could differ at the genus level. Intrageneric morphological variations related to microhabitat differences have been reported; careful estimates may thus be needed for the length-mass relationships even in the same genus if the targets have diverse ecological traits.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate in the saliva the influence in female athletes of handball or volleyball training on concentrations of cortisol [C], dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA], and on the [DHEA]:[C] ratio over 16 weeks of training. Data were compared to those of sedentary women. Saliva samples were collected upon waking after an overnight fast during the 1st week (W1) of the training programme and in the 16th week (W16). The training programme increased the resting concentrations of saliva [DHEA] in all the sportswomen. In contrast, a decrease of [DHEA] was noted in the sedentary group (W16 < W1; P < 0.05). In none of the women did the [C] at rest change significantly during the study. Between W1 and W16, the [DHEA]:[C] ratio increased by more than 30% in all the sportswomen. In addition, the athletes with the highest performance levels and greatest amount of training had the lowest [DHEA]:[C] ratio. Negative linear relationships between the amount of training and the [DHEA]:[C] ratio were found both at W1 (r = −0.53 P < 0.001), and W16 (r=−0.73 P < 0.001), suggesting that the latter could be used as an indicator of the training status of sportswomen. Examination of specimens ofPeltigera didactyla, from Africa, Asia, Europe and North America revealed that this sorediate species includes three entities that can be separated on morphological characters. A new species,P. lambinonii, is described from East Africa, and a new combinationP. didactylavar.extenuata, is proposed to accommodate morphs from mesic forest habitats in Asia, Europe and North America. Despite this taxonomic reduction,P. didactylavar.didactylaremains a ubiquitous taxon. The former two taxa often produce methyl gyrophorate, which can co-occur with traces of gyrophoric acid. These tridepsides were only rarely detected in var.didactyla; their occasional presence seems to be best explained by hybridization. The taxonomic and ecological significance of these substances is discussed.  相似文献

The timing of catches of anguillid glass eels and their otolith microstructure and microchemistry were studied in southwest Iceland, where the European eel, Anguilla anguilla and American eel, A. rostrata have been thought to live sympatrically, to learn about their early life history and the possible mechanism of the separation between these two species ranges. Catches at the site studied suggest that glass eels may have started upstream migration as the river temperature warmed in late June and early July. The glass eels were mitochondrially identified into two species, A. anguilla and A. rostrata, although the latter were likely hybrids between the two species based on a different study. Otolith analyses showed no sharp increases in otolith increment width or sharp decrease of otolith Sr:Ca ratio in either species, which are the characteristic changes corresponding to the onset of metamorphosis in many anguillid species including A. rostrata collected in North America and A. anguilla in Europe. The mean age at recruitment determined for the glass eels in Iceland were similar between the two species (336.6 ± 41.7 and 319.3 ± 36.0 days for A. anguilla and A. rostrata, respectively), as were their total lengths (range 58.0–78.5 mm and 58.5–73.0 mm). In addition, mean age at metamorphosis (278.0 ± 36.8 and 254.0 ± 47.7 days) and total age (372.3 ± 50.8 and 352.9 ± 42.6 days) were also similar between the two species. However, these ages of A. rostrata in Iceland were older than those in North America, and those of A. anguilla collected in Iceland were roughly intermediate between the rest of Europe and North Africa. These findings support the hypothesis that the timing of metamorphosis is a key factor for determining the place of recruitment of glass eels and maintaining the geographic separation between the two species.  相似文献

Twenty-eight specimens of the large notothenioid Dissostichus mawsoni were dissected after capture on a set line near the southern limit of its range in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Total length (L T) averaged 127.3 cm (range 90–162 cm) and weight (W ) was 26.7 kg (range 10.4–60.3 kg). The length-weight relationship was W=3.44×10−5 L T 2.85 (n=28, r 2=0.96). Subcutaneous lipid thickness averaged 2.6 mm and showed no difference due to sex, but a significant weak relationship to W and L T. Hepatosomatic index (I H) was 1.6% for females and 1.7% for males; gonadosomatic index (I G) was 0.9% for females and 0.2% for males. Although specimens were large and sexually mature, the histology indicated that the gonads of this November sample were in a resting stage. Testes lacked spermatids and spermatozoa. Oocytes were in the previtellogenic stage (91.2%) or in the first stage of vitellogenesis (8.8%). A few atretic oocytes and empty follicles indicated that some females in this sample had spawned previously. A summary of the life-cycle is also presented. Accepted: 27 September 1999  相似文献

The taxonomy of Saimiri is controversial because morphological characteristics, traditionally used for identification, are insufficient to distinguish species and subspecies. Genetic studies of specimens become relevant for captive management, especially considering their frequently unknown geographical origin. We analyzed phenotypic and genetic parameters in Saimiri spp. in Argentinean zoological gardens and biological stations to provide a more accurate taxonomic identification. We studied 27 males and 19 females of Saimiri spp. The cytogenetic analysis in mitotic metaphases corroborated a modal number of 2N = 44, XX/XY, and FN = 75 for males and FN = 76 for females. G- and C-bands, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and the pelage coloration pattern of all the specimens corresponded to Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis. We characterized for the first time the sperm cell morphology and morphometry (mean ± SE): total length: 71.39 ± 5.40 μm; head length: 5.71 ± 0.81 μm; head width: 3.76 ± 0.70 μm; acrosome length: 3.70 ± 0.82 μm; midpiece length: 12.20 ± 2.22 μm. Researchers can use the characterization of the sperm morphology as another parameter for taxonomic identification that, together with cytogenetic and molecular ones, would allow a more precise identification of individual Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (W = a TLb) were estimated for wild and farmed Tor putitora obtained from River Korang, Islamabad and Attock District, Pakistan, respectively. The results indicate, W = 0.0171 TL2.85 for wild and W = 0.1000 TL2.33 for farmed. Total length ranged from 18.0 to 40.2 cm for male and 31.6 to 37.0 cm for female wild Tor putitora, indicating that the fish are now much smaller. The first reference of length–weight relationships for Tor putitora is provided.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study of 191 adult (>18 years) Bengalee male slum dwellers of Kolkata, India, was undertaken to study the relationships of family income with body mass index (BMI) and chronic energy deficiency (CED). Results revealed that the mean height, weight, and BMI of the subjects were 162.2 cm, 54.0 kg, and 20.5 kg/m2, respectively. The overall frequency of CED (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2) was 33.5%. Based on the World Health Organization classification, the prevalence of CED among this population was high (20–39%) and thus the situation is serious. Overall, monthly family income (MFI) was significantly positively correlated (r = 0.18, p < 0.05) with BMI. Linear regression analyses showed that MFI had significant impact (p < 0.05) on BMI. The percent variation in BMI explained by MFI was 2.6%. Subjects belonging to the lowest family income group (FIG) had the lowest mean BMI (19.5 kg/m2) and the highest rate of CED (46.6%) while those in the highest FIG had the largest mean BMI (21.4 kg/m2) and lowest rate of CED (23.1%). There was a significant FIG difference (F = 2.965, p < 0.05) in mean BMI. Moreover, there existed FIG differences (χ 2 = 7.54, p < 0.06) in CED rates. In conclusion, this study provided strong evidence that FIG was significantly associated with BMI and the presence of CED. The rate of CED was high, indicating a serious situation. These findings may have severe public health implications. It is recommended that immediate nutritional intervention programs be initiated among this population along with serious efforts to increase their family income.  相似文献

This study presents fundamental information on the reproductive biology, size and age composition, and growth of yellow catfish, Peltobagrus fulvidraco. Sampling was carried out monthly from Ce Lake in Hubei province from January 2004 and December 2004. Overall female/male (F/M) sex ratio was 1.08, not significantly different from expected 1.0 ratio. But sex ratio (F/M) of the spawning group was 1.14:1 with skewness towards females (p < 0.05). The smallest sexually mature male and female massed 20.51 and 16.93 g, and measured 100.1 and 94.3 mm in total length, respectively. Reproductive period for this species is from April to August when GSI is considerably higher than the rest months (p < 0.05). The highest GSI values were measured from May to July for both sexes and this period was presumably the peak spawn. First maturation occurred at age 1+ for both sexes. Fish of age 1+ and 2+ comprised the greatest portion of spawners. The absolute fecundity (AF) of P. fulvidraco ranged from 657 to 11,696 eggs per fish, with mean AF value of 3,570 ± 122 (S.D.) eggs per fish, varying considerably at given length, weight and age. The fecundity relative to total length (F/L) fluctuated from 58 to 680 eggs/mm, with a mean value of 246 ± 34 (SD) eggs/mm, and fecundity relative to total weight (F/W) varied from 29–133 eggs/g, with a mean value of 67 ± 7 (SD) eggs/g. P. fulvidraco is a single spawner, with low fecundity compared with other Bagrid fish.  相似文献

To date, no regressions for invertebrates from lentic environments are available to facilitate biomass estimation. Predictive length–dry mass regressions for 20 freshwater invertebrate taxa from a pre‐alpine lake littoral in Central Europe are presented here. Regressions were calculated by fitting a power function to body‐length parameters. For Gammarus roeseli, the head height, an easily measurable length parameter, was used. Differences between regressions of different taxa were confirmed by analyses of covariance. Equations for invertebrates grouped at a higher taxonomic level had lower coefficients of determination; therefore, the use of regression equations at the lowest possible taxonomic level is indicated. A comparison of regressions with those published for related taxa in streams revealed significant differences, supporting the opinion that equations should be applied carefully and their use restricted to waterbodies with similar abiotic conditions.  相似文献

To assess the energetics of migration in an anadromous fish, adult American shad (Alosa sapidissima) were swum in a large respirometer at a range of speeds (1.0–2.3 body lengths (BL) s−1, 13–24 °C). Metabolic rate (MO2) was logarithmically related to swimming speed (Bl s−1; r 2 = 0.41, slope = 0.23 ± 0.037) and tailbeat frequency (beats × min−1; r 2 = 0.52, slope = 0.003 ± 0.0003). Temperature had a significant effect on metabolic rate (r 2 = 0.41) with a Q10 of 2.2. Standard metabolic rate (SMR), determined directly after immobilization with the neuroblocker gallamine triethiodide, ranged from 2.2–6.2 mmolO2 kg−1 h−1 and scaled with mass (W) such that SMR = 4.0 (±0.03)W0.695(±0.15). Comparison of directly determined and extrapolated SMR suggests that swimming respirometry provides a good estimate of SMR in this species, given the differences in basal activity monitored by the two methods. Overall, American shad metabolic rates (MO2 and SMR) were intermediate between salmonids and fast-swimming perciforms, including tunas, and may be a result of evolutionary adaptation to their active pelagic, schooling life history. This study demonstrates variability in metabolic strategy among anadromous fishes that may be important to understanding the relative success of different migratory species under varying environmental conditions. Background  

Section Calochroi is one of the most species-rich lineages in the genus Cortinarius (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) and is widely distributed across boreo-nemoral areas, with some extensions into meridional zones. Previous phylogenetic studies of Calochroi (incl. section Fulvi) have been geographically restricted; therefore, phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships within this lineage at a global scale have been largely unknown. In this study, we obtained DNA sequences from a nearly complete taxon sampling of known species from Europe, Central America and North America. We inferred intra- and interspecific phylogenetic relationships as well as major morphological evolutionary trends within section Calochroi based on 576 ITS sequences, 230 ITS + 5.8S + D1/D2 sequences, and a combined dataset of ITS + 5.8S + D1/D2 and RPB1 sequences of a representative subsampling of 58 species.  相似文献

Aim Newly formed polyploids experience problems of establishment and spread similar to those faced by newly introduced alien species. To understand the significance of polyploidy in biological invasions, we mapped the distribution of ploidy levels in Solidago gigantea Aiton in its native range in North America, and in Europe and East Asia where it is invasive. Location North America, Europe and East Asia. Methods Flow cytometry was used to measure ploidy levels in a total of 834 plants from 149 locations. Together with data from contributors and a literature review, ploidy‐level data were assembled for 336 locations. Cytogeographical maps from North America and Europe were prepared, incorporating new and previously published ploidy‐level data. Results In the native range, diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid plants were found, and also one triploid and one pentaploid plant (2n = 3x and 2n = 5x, respectively, each being new reports for this species). There was a high degree of geographical separation among the ploidy levels, and populations with mixed ploidy were rare. However, four zones were identified where plants of different ploidy could come into contact. In Europe and East Asia, only tetraploid plants were found. Main conclusions The geographical pattern in North America suggests that the ploidy levels are ecologically differentiated, although further investigations are needed to identify the nature of these differences. Alien populations appear to be exclusively tetraploid, but it is not clear whether this is because tetraploids were selectively introduced or because diploids were unsuccessful. In any case, comparisons between native and introduced populations need to account for ploidy level.  相似文献

We investigated whether localized 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMRS) using stimulated echoes (STEAM) with a long mixing time (t m) allowed the suppression of the fat signal and detection of lactate in skeletal muscle. The 1H NMRS sequence was first validated in three isolated and perfused rabbit biceps brachii muscles. Spectra were obtained on a wide-bore spectrometer using a dual-tuned probe (1H and 31P). Death was simulated by ceasing the muscle perfusion, which allowed post-mortem changes to be followed. During and after the simulated death, changes in levels of pH and in content of energy-rich compounds were observed with 31P NMRS. Our results showed an inverse linear relationship between pH and lactate in each of the three rabbits (r = 0.93, P < 0.001; r = 0.92, P < 0.01; r = 0.89, P < 0.01) and a decrease in phosphocreatine and concomitant increase in lactate. We then investigated whether this sequence allowed repeated detection of lactate in human soleus muscle during the recovery between periods of intense exercise (force-velocity test, F-v test). Seven subjects mean age 25.1 (SEM 0.8) years participated in this study. Soleus muscle lactate was detected at rest and for 3 min 30 s of the 5-min recovery between periods using a 2.35-T 40-cm bore magnet spectrometer. Arm venous plasma lactate concentration was measured at rest, during the F-v test when the subject stopped pedalling (S1), and at the end of each 5-min recovery between periods (S2). Results showed that the venous plasma lactate concentration at S1 and S2 increased significantly from the beginning of the F-v test to peak anaerobic power (W an,peak) (P < 0.001). The spectra showed that muscle lactate resonance intensity rose markedly when W an,peak was achieved. The muscle lactate resonance intensity plotted as a percentage of the resting value increased significantly at W an,peak compared with submaximal braking forces (P < 0.05). We concluded from these results that localized 1H NMRS using STEAM with a long t m allows suppression of the fat signal and repeated detection of lactate on isolated perfused skeletal muscle in animals and between periods of intense exercise in humans. Planktonic and artificial substrate-associated ciliates have been identified in two perennially ice-covered antarctic lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. Abundances estimated by quantitative protargol staining ranged from <5 to 31690 cells · l−1, levels that are comparable to those previously obtained using other methods. Nineteen ciliate taxa were identified from these lakes, with the most frequently encountered genera being Plagiocampa, Askenasia, Monodinium, Sphaerophrya and Vorticella. The taxonomic findings compare favorably with those of previous investigators; however four previously unreported genera were observed in both Lakes Fryxell and Hoare. The variability in the depth distributions of ciliates in Lake Fryxell is explained in terms of lake physicochemical properties and ciliate prey distributions, while factors related to temporal succession in the Lake Hoare assemblage remain unexplained. Local marine or temperate zone freshwater habitats are a more likely source than the surrounding dry valleys soils for present ciliate colonists in these lakes. Although the taxonomic uncertainties require further examination, our results suggest that ciliate populations in these antarctic lakes undergo significant fluctuations and are more diverse than was previously recognized. In total, 240 tarek, Alburnus tarichi, specimens were caught throughout February 2008 in Lake Van, Turkey, a lake with highly salty‐alkaline conditions. Ages, lengths and weights of A. tarichi were determined to estimate length–weight relationships and age composition. Otolith dimensions were also determined. Female : male ratio was 1.47 : 1. Fork length and total weight of specimens ranged from 14.3 to 19.2 cm and 45.76 to 99.63 g, respectively. Maximum age observed was 6 years. Length–weight relationships were calculated for female, male and combined sexes as, W = 0.057FL2.582W = 0.102FL2.513 W = 0.074FL2.544, respectively. Concerning types of growth, negative allometric growth (b < 3) was observed for all tarek specimens. The lagenar otolith was large and flat and marks on otoliths were typically clear, consistent and easy to interpret. Mean otolith length, breadth and weight were determined as 2.592 mm, 2.381 mm, 0.0026 g, respectively. While the otolith weight displayed a curvilinear relationship with the fork length, otolith length and breadth were linearly related to the fork length by height correlation coefficients.  相似文献

This study presents a historical review, a meta‐analysis, and recommendations for users about weight–length relationships, condition factors and relative weight equations. The historical review traces the developments of the respective concepts. The meta‐analysis explores 3929 weight–length relationships of the type W = aLb for 1773 species of fishes. It shows that 82% of the variance in a plot of log a over b can be explained by allometric versus isometric growth patterns and by different body shapes of the respective species. Across species median b = 3.03 is significantly larger than 3.0, thus indicating a tendency towards slightly positive‐allometric growth (increase in relative body thickness or plumpness) in most fishes. The expected range of 2.5 < b < 3.5 is confirmed. Mean estimates of b outside this range are often based on only one or two weight–length relationships per species. However, true cases of strong allometric growth do exist and three examples are given. Within species, a plot of log a vs b can be used to detect outliers in weight–length relationships. An equation to calculate mean condition factors from weight–length relationships is given as Kmean = 100aLb?3. Relative weight Wrm = 100W/(amLbm) can be used for comparing the condition of individuals across populations, where am is the geometric mean of a and bm is the mean of b across all available weight–length relationships for a given species. Twelve recommendations for proper use and presentation of weight–length relationships, condition factors and relative weight are given.  相似文献

Species of Epichloë (Ascomycota: Clavicipitaceae), which infect grasses, maintain an obligate symbiotic relationship with flies of the genus Botanophila (Diptera: Anthomyiidae). Sexual reproduction of the fungus usually requires a visit by Botanophila, which serves to ‘pollinate’ the fungus with spermatia of the opposite mating type; the flies in turn deposit their eggs on fungal tissues upon which the larvae feed. For a molecular phylogenetic study, a total of 108 fly larvae were collected from 10 different Epichloë species on various grasses in Europe and North America. Sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene (COII) detected six distinct Botanophila taxa that were associated with Epichloë. Three were restricted to samples from Europe, two to samples from North America, and one was present on both continents. In North America the common taxon [identified as Botanophila lobata (Collin)] was found on Epichloë hosts of native grasses and on Epichloë typhina (Pers.: Fr.) Tul. and Epichloë festucae Leuchtm., Schardl and M.R. Siegel of the introduced grasses Dactylis glomerata L. and Festuca rubra L., respectively. In a maximum likelihood phylogram, one of the American taxa was most basal, while the other was nested within the European taxa, suggesting that European and American taxa of Epichloë-associated Botanophila spp. may not have separate origins. Analyses of the fly populations further indicated that up to four different Botanophila taxa can be present at a single location. On taxon level there was no specificity of flies for Epichloë host species (except taxon 6 that was found only on Epichloë glyceriae Schardl & Leuchtmann), although several taxa appeared to prefer some hosts over others. Comparison of molecular phylogenetic relationships of Botanophila species with those of the associated Epichloë hosts did not suggest co-evolution of the fungus and the fly. Thus, associations between Botanophila flies and Epichloë hosts may have arisen independently more than once.  相似文献
