This paper briefly considers the notion of a biology of quantum information from a number of complementary points of view. We begin with a very brief look at some of the biomolecular systems that are thought to exploit quantum mechanical effects and then turn to the issue of measurement in these systems and the concomitant generation of information. This leads us to look at the internalist stance and the exchange interaction of quantum particles. We suggest that exchange interaction can also be viewed using ecological ideas related to apparatus-object. This can also help develop the important notion of complementarity in biosystems in relation to the nature and generation of information at the microphysical scale.  相似文献

Studies on the effect of the inhibitor of fatty acid oxidation (+)-octanoylcarnitine on the perfused liver of the 48–51 days fetal guinea pig indicate that the oxidation of endogenous fatty acids is a major source of carbon for the citric acid cycle and for synthesis of hexose. Consistent with this the liver can convert isocitrate to glyoxylate and glyoxylate to malate and may therefore operate a glyoxylate cycle allowing the net production of sugars from acetyl-CoA.  相似文献

Daytime activity is largely regulated by the day/night pattern. Various physiological and cognitive functions display a variation during the diurnal period, where individuals manage their balance, spatial orientation and consequently their perception of the vertical. However, findings concerning daytime changes of postural control quality remain contradictory, mainly due to methodogical considerations. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of time of day on postural control and perception of the vertical.

Fifteen male subjects underwent six test sessions over a 24-hour period. Each session involved a postural balance test (static/dynamic; eyes open/closed) and a subjective evaluation of sleepiness, fatigue and subjective visual vertical (SVV) (light stick tilted from 10 to 40°; eight trials). No time-of-day effect was observed on postural balance. However, perception of the vertical fluctuates during the day and is better at 10 a.m. than at 10 p.m. Despite the gradual perception of the vertical deterioration over the day, postural balance does not show any fluctuation. This postural balance consistency throughout the day may be the result of compensation mechanisms.  相似文献

Community ecology entered the 1970s with the belief that niche theory would supply a general theory of community structure. The lack of wide-spread empirical support for niche theory led to a focus on models specific to classes of communities such as lakes, intertidal communities, and forests. Today, the needs of conservation biology for metrics of “ecological health” that can be applied across types of communities prompts a renewed interest in the possibility of general theory for community ecology. Disputes about the existence of general patterns in community structure trace at least to the 1920s and continue today almost unchanged in concept, although now expressed through mathematical modeling. Yet, a new framework emerged in the 1980s from findings that community composition and structure depend as much on the processes that bring species to the boundaries of a community as by processes internal to a community, such as species interactions and co-evolution. This perspective, termed “supply-side ecology”, argued that community ecology was to be viewed as an “organic earth science” more than as a biological science. The absence of a general theory of the earth would then imply a corresponding absence of any general theory for the communities on the earth, and imply that the logical structure of theoretical community ecology would consist of an atlas of models special to place and geologic time. Nonetheless, a general theory of community ecology is possible similar in form to the general theory for evolution if the processes that bring species to the boundary of a community are analogized to mutation, and the processes that act on the species that arrive at a community are analogized to selection. All communities then share some version of this common narrative, permitting general theorems to be developed pertaining to all ecological communities. Still, the desirability of a general theory of community ecology is debatable because the existence of a general theory suppresses diversity of thought even as it allows generalizations to be derived. The pros and cons of a general theory need further discussion.  相似文献

The preventive orientation that has been gaining ground in Sweden is indicative of ways in which our society is organized to sustain values like a healthy life, a healthy body, and a healthy society. Search for health dangers and risks shows how medical technology has been integrated with our thinking about health. Preventive language, like all language of medicine, besides describing a pre-existing biological reality, creates in the process its own objects of analysis. This also has an impact and influences how lay people experience their bodies. The study presented focuses on one form of prevention in an attempt to describe how the ambition to secure a healthy society, through the detection of early disease, may have the opposite effect. Medical health-care ambitions in screening for cholesterolaemia will be related to implications for a group of men in whom cholesterol was found to be elevated. The men feel healthy yet are in some sense diseased. This raises the issue of visualizing the invisible in health care and the implications of such a process for the patients concermed.  相似文献

Animal experiments and observations in human brains have convincingly shown that sexual differentiation not only concerns the genitalia but also the brain. This has been investigated also in the light of a possible explanation of a presumed biological aetiology of transsexuality. The volume of the central subdivision of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, a brain area that is essential for sexual behaviour, has been reported to be larger in men than in women. Additionally, the number of somatostatin expressing neurons in this region was shown to be higher in men than in women. As neuronal production of somatostatin is involved the idea is striking whether somatostatin-receptor density in the cortex of cerebral hemispheres might be related to gender identity. We investigated in vivo the density of somatostatin-receptors in selected regions of the human brain in both sexes by means of receptor scintigraphy. Basal ganglia tracer uptake of 111-In-Pentreotide was equally low in both genders at 0,80% +/ 0,26 (related to tracer uptake of the whole brain layer). Temporal cortex accumulated at 2,9% +/ 1,1 in men and at 2,3% +/ 0,76 in women. Frontal brain region had an uptake of 3,0% +/ 1,4 in male and of 2,5% +/ 1,3 in female. This shows a tendency in males for relatively augmented uptake indicating higher somatostatin receptor density in temporal and frontal cerebral cortex.  相似文献

Summary In gills of the shore crab Carcinus maenas an ATPase activity was found which was stimulated by bicarbonate and inhibited by low concentration of oligomycin and thiocyanate. This ATPase was activated by small hydrated alkali cations, i.e., activation was absent in the presence of Li+, small in the presence of Na+, and highest in the presence of K+ (K m=4 mM). Inhibitor studies using ouabain, NEM, and vanadate suggest that this ATPase is different from (Na++K+)-ATPase, the H+-ATPase of organelles, or an E 1 E 2-type ATPase represented by the H+/K+-ATPase in gastric mucosa. Results obtained by differential and density gradient centrifugation indicate that this ATPase is located in crab gill mitochondria, a location ruling out its direct participation in transepithelial ion transport. Since the ATPase lacked specific Cl--activation it is not considered to be a Cl- pump but a mitochondrial F 1 F 0-ATPase. Specific activities of mitochondrial ATPase and (Na++K+)-ATPase were of comparable magnitude. Both ATPases were greatly increased in gills of crabs acclimated to brackish water (salinity 10) compared to crabs maintained in sea water (30). A single vertical stripe (long or short) was moved clockwise, with constant speed, around a tethered femaleMusca domestica fly. The yaw torque response of the fly was analyzed as a function of the position of the object. After an interval of 8 s the stripe was moved counterclockwise and a similar analysis of the torque was made. This procedure was repeated a few times and averaged to each direction separately and for all the flies tested. The results suggested that: a) There are at least two mechanisms for computing the optomotor response in the lower part of the fly's eye, one performing a position-dependent velocity computation and the other depending on the position but not on the direction of motion of an object. b) These two components are parametrized over the position on the lower part of the eye. The results also show that: c) There is a significant difference in the response between the upper and the lower part of the eye. The position-dependent component cannot be detected in the upper part of the eye. In addition: d) Two different control mechanisms are proposed, one responding to progressive (from front to back) and one to regressive (from back to front) movement of objects.  相似文献

The concept of pilot pseudopodia is reconsidered 30 years after its inauguration (Gerisch, G., Hülser, D., Malchow, D., Wick, U., 1975. Cell communication by periodic cyclic-AMP pulses. Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. B 272, 181-192). The original hypothesis stated that protruding pseudopodia serve as dynamic sensory organelles that aid a cell in perceiving variations of chemoattractant concentration and, consequently, in navigation during chemotaxis. This influential idea is reevaluated in the light of recent findings about the mechanisms governing chemotactic cell motility, morphology and dynamics of pseudopodia, and about molecular constituents and regulators of pseudopod extension and retraction. It is proposed that stimulation by a chemoattractant modulates speed of pseudopod protrusion and thereby increases cell elongation. Elongation further enhances chemotactic sensitivity of the cell to shallow chemoattractant gradients, reinforces cell polarization, and finally leads to suppression of lateral pseudopodia and continuation of cell migration in the gradient direction.  相似文献

No medication has yet been shown to consistently alter the symptoms or the course of autism in the majority of patients. The present pharmacotherapy is mainly palliative and sometimes effective in attenuating specific behaviors. The search for better treatment involves examination of the underlying pathophysiology, the genetic or environmental etiology (including possible iatrogenic causes), and assessment of the clinically-generated evidence of efficacy, including serendipitous or unexplained findings. Subtle neuroanatomic and neurochemical changes are being explored and there are anecdotal reports or limited clinical trials that suggest some therapy might be possible. Secretin is a surprising recent addition to the list of candidates. The pharmacologic mechanism by which these agents might provide such effect is not clear, but hypotheses are beginning to emerge. In addition, the prevention of some uncertain number of autism cases is being investigated by examination of certain vaccinations as putative causative or contributory factors. These topics are reviewed in this article, which has the additional purpose of stimulating novel drug discovery efforts for this enigmatic disorder.  相似文献

During the last decades, the use of antibody tests for the diagnosis of invasive mycoses has declined as a consequence of the general belief that they are insensitive and non-specific. However, there is a clear evidence that antibodies can be detected in highly immunodeficient patients (such as bone marrow transplant recipients), and that those antibodies are useful for the diagnosis. Antibody tests are currently in use as diagnostic tools for some primary mycoses, such as the endemic mycoses, aspergilloma, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergilosis and sporothrichosis. For invasive candidiasis, diagnostic methods must differentiate Candida colonization of mucous membranes or superficial infection from tissue invasion by this microorganism. Substantial progress has been made in diagnosis of invasive candidiasis with the development of a variety of methods for the detection of antibodies and antigens. However, no single test has found widespread clinical use and there is a consensus that diagnosis based on a single specimen lacks sensitivity. It is necessary to test sequential samples taken while the patient is at greatest risk for developing invasive candidiasis to optimize the diagnosis. Results obtained from a panel of diagnostic tests in association with clinical aspects will likely be the most useful strategy for early diagnosis and therapy.  相似文献

Blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (BN-PAGE) analyses of detergent mitochondrial extracts have provided evidence that the yeast ATP synthase could form dimers. Cross-linking experiments performed on a modified version of the i-subunit of this enzyme indicate the existence of such ATP synthase dimers in the yeast inner mitochondrial membrane. We also show that the first transmembrane segment of the eukaryotic b-subunit (bTM1), like the two supernumerary subunits e and g, is required for dimerization/oligomerization of ATP synthases. Unlike mitochondria of wild-type cells that display a well-developed cristae network, mitochondria of yeast cells devoid of subunits e, g, or bTM1 present morphological alterations with an abnormal proliferation of the inner mitochondrial membrane. From these observations, we postulate that an anomalous organization of the inner mitochondrial membrane occurs due to the absence of ATP synthase dimers/oligomers. We provide a model in which the mitochondrial ATP synthase is a key element in cristae morphogenesis.  相似文献
