SUMMARY.
  • 1 Germination experiments demonstrated that the innate dormancy of the seeds of Nymphaea alba L., Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm. and Nymphoides peltata (Gmel.) O. Kuntze could be overcome by a cold treatment. Light stimulated the germination of the three species. Hypoxic conditions stimulated the germination of Nymphaea alba and Nuphar lutea seeds but the seeds of Nymphoides peltata did not germinate under these conditions.
  • 2 Experimental seed banks of Nymphaea alba, Nuphar lutea and Nymphoides peltata were laid out in three water bodies, varying in pH and alkalinity. Germination patterns indicated that Nymphaea alba and Nuphar lutea produce transient seed banks, but that Nymphoides peliata produces a persistent seed bank. Sampling of natural seed banks and subsequent germination tests were in concordance with the results of the seed bank experiment.
  • 3 The experimental above-ground seed banks of Nymphaea alba, Nuphar lutea and Nymphoides peltata showed similar germination patterns in the three selected water bodies, despite the differences in pH and alkalinity between them. However, the distribution of Nymphoides peliata is restricted to well-buffered waters, so that its absence from soft and acid water bodies must be due to post-germination mechanisms and/or processes.
  • 4 In aquatic systems where Nymphoides peltata co-exists with the other nymphaeid species studied, it is largely restricted to a bell between the helophytes and the vegetation at deeper sites. The deeper sites were dominated by Nuphar lutea and Nymphaea alba. Germination requirements and seedling emergence from buried seeds of Nymphaea alba, Nuphar lutea and Nymphoides peliata play an important role in the establishment of the zonation pattern of these nymphaeid macrophytes.

Production, turnover and nutrient dynamics of floating leaves of Nymphaea alba L. and Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm. were studied in four aquatic systems in The Netherlands, differing strongly in water quality. Production was 108–447 g AFDW.m−2 for N. lutea and 319–348 g AFDW.m−2 for N. alba. Turnover ranged from 3.6 to 4.4 without much difference between the sites and the species. During senescence 60–70% of the N and P from the leaves was resorbed by both of the plant species. The nutrient flow from the floating leaves into the detritus food chain differed considerably between the species and sites studied, mainly because of the differences in production. The data suggest that production is strongly influenced by the environment, whereas turnover and nutrient resorption during senescence seem to be plant characteristics. There was little difference in dynamics of the chlorophyll-α concentration in the leaves of the two species, irrespective of the growing site. Floating leaves of both species lost about 70% of their area due to fragmentation in the alkaline waters, whereas in the acid water very little fragmentation was observed.  相似文献

Summary The grazing effects of the waterlily beetle Galerucella nymphaeae on Nuphar lutea stands were studied in three ponds in Central Finland. Production of floating leaves of N. lutea and growth in the G. nymphaeae population were investigated in the ponds and bioenergetics of the beetle larvae in the laboratory. Combination of field and laboratory data enabled estimation of the effect of the beetle on the production of floating leaves of N. lutea and the consequences of grazing for the input of detritus from Nuphar into the ponds. Adults and larvae of G. nymphaeae consumed 3.0–6.1% of the net annual floating leaf production during the growing period. In addition to consumption losses, feeding accelerated the degradation rate of the leaves. This was associated with an increased flow of detrital material of Nuphar origin, and also with increased production of floating leaves in the ponds. These increments were estimated to be up to 3 times greater in the presence of grazing than without it. Grazing by G. nymphaeae releases substantial amounts of carbon and nitrogen bound in Nuphar, particularly in ponds with a dense Nuphar vegetation. It is hypothesized that feeding by this beetle may markedly affect the structure and functioning of such small aquatic systems.  相似文献

The ultrastructure and functional characteristics of the photosynthetic apparatus of floating and submersed leaves of the heterophyllous plant Nuphar lutea (L.) Smith have been examined. Differences have been revealed in mesophyll cell chloroplasts, content of pigments, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters between floating and submersed leaves and submersed leaves at different depths. A sharp decline in the PSII (photosystem II) efficiency of submersed leaves when exposed to an actinic light intensity of more than 60 ??mol m?2 s?1 has been noted. The described differences may be considered as an adaptation mechanism of submersed leaves to life in an aquatic environment with a reduced light intensity and changed light spectral composition.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Considerable changes in macrophyte vegetation can be noticed in 146 originally soft waters, when data on the recent aquatic vegetation are compared with historical information from the period 1900–60. Changes in nutrient status (N, P and C) and accumulation of organic material can be regarded as the operative factors.
  • 2 The processes observed in soft waters are acidification, eutrophication and water hardening. Which process dominates depends on the type of soft water.
  • 3 Acidification as well as eutrophication of water bodies may ultimately result in the total disappearance of all aquatic macrophytes, with the exception of the floating-leaved nymphaeids Nymphaea alba L. and Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm. Observed successional stages are described and summarized.

Summary Senescent floating leaf material of Nymphaea alba L., collected in an acidified moorland pool, was used in decomposition studies in two aquatic systems that differed greatly in pH, alkalinity and nutrient concentration. Concentrations of extractable protein and phenolics in the decomposing leaf material were measured during the incubation period. Protein levels were not significantly different in the leaf material from the two study sites, whereas the concentrations of phenolics in the degrading leaf blades from the acid site remained higher than in the material from the alkaline site. The resource quality of the decomposing leaf material was estimated by feeding tests using Asellus aquaticus (L.) in the laboratory. The effect of an artificially increased level of tannin on the feeding activity of A. aquaticus was also studied. Material from the acid system was consumed at a lower rate than material from the other system. The phenolic content of the material was found to be the most important feeding cue. The protein level of the leaf blade detritus seems to be of less importance. The structure of the decomposing leaf blades may have influenced the resource quality in the later stages of the experiment.  相似文献

Summary A chemostat study was conducted to investigate the influence of water quality parameters related to acidification processes on the decomposition of floating leaves of Nymphaea alba L. HCO inf3 sup– and total Al concentration and pH influenced the decay rate. The activity of four cell-wall decaying exoenzymes was measured in the detritus. The activity of two types of pectic enzyme and xylanase was low under acid conditions. Cellulase activity was little affected. The exoenzyme activity seemed to be influenced by the pH of the water within the detritus. Inhibition of pectic enzymes under acid conditions may be an important factor causing the slow decay of macrophyte remains in acid waters.  相似文献

  • 1 Decomposition of the leaves of Nymphaea alba L. and Betula pubescens Ehrh. was studied in two ponds of contrasting pH, buffering capacity and trophic level. Rates of carbon loss, concentrations of nitrogen, protein and phenolics and colonization of the leaf material by macroinvertebrates were studied.
  • 2 Decomposition of B. pubescens leaves was slower than that of N. alba in both ponds. Protein and phenolic concentrations were higher in the decomposing N. alba material, whereas no significant difference was found for nitrogen concentrations.
  • 3 Decomposition of both species was slower in the acid water. The effect of acid water on decomposition rate was similar for both species. Both nitrogen and protein concentrations of N. alba remained higher under acid conditions, whereas no effect of study site was observed on the protein and nitrogen concentrations in B. pubescens litter. The concentration of phenolic compounds was higher in N. alba litter from the acid pond; no such difference was observed for B. pubescens litter. The high concentrations of phenolic compounds in N. alba litter from the acid pond probably induced chemical immobilization (tanning reaction), yielding high concentrations of nitrogen and protein in the litter.
  • 4 Diversity of the detritivorous macroinvertebrate fauna on the litter of both species was extremely low in the acid pond, while a relatively high diversity occurred in the alkaline water. Exclusion of large macrofauna inhibited decomposition in the alkaline water, while there was no comparable influence in the acid water.
  • 5 The effects of low pH on the decomposition of both terrestrial and aquatic macrophyte litter appeared to be caused by interactive effects of low pH on the microbial decomposition, on the detritivorous macroinvertebrates and, in the case of N. alba, on the resource quality of the detritus.

Summary The breakdown of floating leaves ofNymphaea alba was studied with litterbags in two aquatic systems,viz., an alkaline, eutrophic former riverbed (Oude Waal) and an acid, oligotrophic pool (Voorste Choorven). It was found that the floating leaves from the Oude Waal decomposed at a faster rate than those from the Voorste Choorven when they were incubated in their natural system. In order to get insight in the parameters which determine the observed differences in the field, laboratory experiments were performed. Leaf discs ofN.alba were incubated in staged concentration gradients of some important chemical parameters (bicarbonate, ammonium, nitrate, orthophosphate, sulphate, pH, combinations of nitrate and phosphate; nitrate and bicarbonate, and bicarbonate and sulphate). It appeared that the differences in decomposition rate as observed in the field could be largely explained by the pH and alkalinity of the system-water, and the chemical composition and physiological state of the plant material.Contribution nr. 36 of the nymphaeid project.  相似文献

The late-spring quantitative relationship between epiphyton and macroinvertebrates was analyzed on the basis of units of colonizable plant surface of Typha angustifolia, Phragmites australis and Nuphar lutea (floating leaves) in the shallow euthrophic Lake Loosdrecht (the Netherlands), with a high seston load. The non-predatory chironomid larvae (Glyptotendipes viridis, Endochironomus albipennis, Pentapedilum sordens, Cricotopus sylvestris agg.) dominated among the macroinvertebrate taxa, controlling the diversity and resemblance of macroinvertebrate assemblages. There was a gradient in functional feeding groups among the chironomids from continuous filtering of the seston to prevailing utilization of epiphyton. We found no direct relationship between the total macroinvertebrate abundance and the epiphyton mass on the plants surface. We attribute this to the filter feeding-strategy of the most abundant species, Glyptotendipes viridis, that utilizes seston in the eutrophicated lake.  相似文献

Neben gelegentlichen Ablagerungen von Siebröhrenstärke enthalten ausdifferenzierte Siebröhren-Plastiden zahlreiche keilförmige, kontrastreiche und proteinhaltige Kristalloide. Sie entstehen in der Matrix der noch amöboiden Formveränderungen unterworfenen Proplastiden; in reifem Zustand werden sie aus gekreuzten Reihen paralleler, gerader und kontrastreicher Filamente (50–60 Å) aufgebaut.Die Siebröhren-Plastiden von Nymphaea alba und Nuphar luteum bilden keine Kristalloide aus, dagegen läßt sich Siebröhrenstärke wie in den übrigen bisher untersuchten Dicotylen nachweisen.

Summary Fine-structural investigations of 24 monocotyledons from 21 families and all but one order succeeded in revealing a plastid with cuneate proteinaceous inclusion bodies as being typical of monocot sieve-tubes. Inclusion bodies originate in large numbers during plastid differentiation; they concentrate in the matrix and aggregate around an invisible centre, that mostly lies at one end of the elongated ameboid proplastid. The inclusion-free part of the young plastid contains countless vesicles and short membranes, presumably invaginations of the inner plastid envelope. Proteinaceous inclusion bodies show a crystal-like structure composed of 50–60 Å subunits in straight and parallel order. Besides these crystal-like inclusion bodies sieve-tube plastids of many monocotyledons also contain starch. — Sieve-tube plastids of Nuphar luteum and Nymphaea alba look like plastids in dicotyledon sieve-tubes, starch being their only inclusion.

<正>Nelumbonaceae is a morphologically unique family of angiosperms and was traditionally placed in Nymphaeales;more recently,it was placed in Proteales based on molecular data,or in an order of its own,Nelumbonales. To determine the systematic position of the family and to date the divergence time of the family and the divergence time of its two intercontinentally disjunct species,we sequenced the entire chloroplast genome of Nelumbo lutea and most of the chloroplast genes of,N.nucifera.We carried out phylogenetic and molecular dating analyses of the two species and representatives of 47 other plant families,representing the major lineages of angiosperms, using 83 plastid genes.The N.lutea genome was 163 510 bp long,with a total of 130 coding genes and an overall GC content of 38%.No significant structural differences among the genomes of N.lutea,Nymphaea alba, and Platanus occidentalis were observed.The phylogenetic relationships based on the 83 plastid genes revealed a close relationship between Nelumbonaceae and Platanaceae.The divergence times were estimated to be 109 Ma between the two families and 1.5 Ma between the two Nelumbo species.The estimated time was only slightly longer than the age of known Nelumbo fossils,suggesting morphological stasis within Nelumbonaceae.We conclude that Nelumbonaceae holds a position in or close to Proteales.We further conclude that the two species of Nelumbo diverged recently from a common ancestor and do not represent ancient relicts on different continents.  相似文献

The oviposition behaviour of the water-lily beetle Galerucella nymphaeae was examined. This species is a specialist herbivore on the floating leaves of nymphaeids Nymphaeaceae and especially on the yellow water-lily, Nuphar lutea. Females lay their eggs in clutches on the leaves, and after hatching, the larvae feed on the leaves. The quality of the leaves decreases quickly after the larvae hatch, and eventually the leaves will sink below the water surface, whereupon the eggs, 1st-instar larvae and pupae are killed by drowning. The influence of conspecific eggs, larvae and feeding tracks on the oviposition preferences of the beetles was tested. Females were allowed to choose between fresh leaves and leaves with conspecific eggs and larvae as well as between leaves with larvae and leaves with feeding tracks but no larvae. An attempt was also made to determine whether eggs and larvae affect the oviposition rate of females when they are not given the opportunity to oviposit on untouched leaves. The results indicate that females tended to avoid leaves with conspecific larvae or to exhibit a decreased oviposition rate on such leaves. Females also avoided conspecific eggs, although the oviposition rate was not influenced by the presence of conspecific eggs. When females were allowed to choose between leaves with larvae and leaves with feeding tracks, possible discrimination against leaves with larvae just fails to reach the 5% level.  相似文献

Phenotypic responses of Potamogeton amplifolius and Nuphar advena to different light (7% and 35% of surface irradiance) and nutrient environments were assessed with field manipulation experiments. Higher light and nutrient availability enhanced the growth of P. amplifolius by 154% and 255%, respectively. Additionally, biomass was allocated differently depending on the resource: high light availability resulted in a higher root/shoot ratio, whereas high nutrient availability resulted in a lower root/shoot ratio. Low light availability and high nutrient availability increased the nitrogen content of leaf tissue by 53% and 40% respectively, resulting in a 37% and 31% decrease in the C/N ratio. Root nitrogen content was also increased by low light and high nutrient availability, by 50% (P=0.0807) and 77% respectively, resulting in a 20% and 40% decrease in root C/N ratio. Leaf phenolics were significantly increased 72% by high light and 31% by high nutrient availability, but root phenolic concentrations were not altered significantly. None of these changes in tissue constituents resulted in altered palatability to crayfish. N. advena was killed by the same high nutrient treatment that stimulated growth in P. amplifolius, preventing assessment of phenotypic responses to nutrient availability. However, high light availability increased overall growth by 24%, but this was mainly due to increased growth of the rhizome (increased 100%), resulting in a higher root/shoot ratio. High light tended to increase the production of floating leaves (P=0.09) and significantly decreased the production of submersed leaves. High light availability decreased the nitrogen content by 15% and 25% and increased the phenolic concentration by 88% and 255% in floating and submersed leaves, respectively. These differences in leaf traits did not result in detectable differences in damage by herbivores.  相似文献

Abstract

Heavy metal bioaccumulation and translocation properties of aquatic plants are interesting because of their potential use in phytoextraction. However, there is not enough knowledge about the seasonal changes of the metal distribution properties of aquatic plants. Our study focused on seasonal variation of some heavy metals in relation to their bioaccumulation and translocation in Nuphar lutea, a floating leaved, widespread plant that is important to wildlife. In this study, N. lutea, corresponding sediment and water samples were collected at different seasons from Lake Abant (Turkey) and analysed for their heavy metal content (Pb, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn and Cd). Accumulation and translocation of heavy metal ratios were calculated seasonally. It was found that Cr and Zn were actively transported from sediment to the root, where they accumulated especially in summer; it was also shown that Cu, Mn and Zn were not only taken up from the sediment but also from the surrounding water. The investigations suggested that translocation ratios for leaf/root of Pb, Cr, Mn and Zn reached their highest levels in spring. It was found that the bioaccumulation and translocation of heavy metals at different parts of N. lutea changes with respect to season and the type of heavy metal.  相似文献

The network of internal gas spaces in the yellow waterlily constitutes a pressurized flow-through system which forces oxygen to the rhizome buried in anaerobic sediment. This ventilation has been documented previously in a subspecies of Nuphar luteum with aerial leaves, and appeared to occur only during daylight when the leaves are warmed by the sun's radiation. In this study we have found the ventilation system operating in two different subspecies of N. luteum growing in Alaska and in Massachusetts. These plants have floating leaves so that during certain times of the year the leaves are warmed not only by the sun in daylight but also by lake water at night, allowing the ventilation to continue during darkness.  相似文献

1. We investigated the importance of lake water chemistry and substrate properties in regulating microbial decomposer communities on macrophyte litter. Ten lakes of differing water chemistry, including such variables as nutrient concentration, pH and dissolved organic carbon, were sampled in October 2003. Water chemistry was analysed, and litter from the macrophytes Phragmites australis, Schoenoplectus lacustris and Nuphar lutea was collected from both above and below the water surface. 2. The three plant species differed widely in carbon and nitrogen content. The aerial parts of P. australis had highest C : N ratio (mean value 125), while the lowest values were found in leaves of N. lutea (19.8). 3. Fungal carbon ranged from 0.15 to 6.4 mg g?1 dry weight (DW), and was higher on aerial than on submerged plant parts. Fungal biomass was highest on S. lacustris and lowest on N. lutea. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis revealed no differences in the number of fungal taxa between plant species or plant parts, with the limitation that no molecular analysis was possible for N. lutea. 4. In contrast, bacteria were most abundant on N. lutea, but showed no significant difference between leaf and stem parts. The number of bacterial taxa was highest on the submerged parts of P. australis. 5. The correlations between microbial variables and the properties of lakes and litter were analysed using multivariate statistics. In a principal component analysis, litter properties explained 78% of the variation in microbial variables. In contrast, redundancy analysis revealed that the explanatory power of lake water chemistry was only 20%, indicating that the properties of the growth substratum were more important than those of the lake water for the attached microbial communities.  相似文献

【目的】探究丛枝菌根真菌(arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi,AMF)和深色有隔内生真菌(dark septate endophyte,DSE)对蛋白桑(Morus alba)产量及品质的影响。【方法】采用盆栽试验,以丛枝菌根真菌和深色有隔内生真菌为微生物处理菌剂,通过设置单接种DSE、单接种AMF和联合接种DSE+AMF3种不同微生物组合研究对蛋白桑生长、产量和品质等影响,探索微生物菌剂对生态饲料作物蛋白桑的经济潜力。【结果】与未接菌处理(CK)相比,3种接菌处理均能显著促进蛋白桑地上部生长,提高地上部生物量,增加幅度为156.4%-196.6%;接菌微生物提高了蛋白桑的光合速率,增加了植物叶片氮、磷、钾的累积,提高蛋白桑的产量。接种微生物会使蛋白桑叶粗蛋白含量提升,降低饲料纤维营养价值,从而综合改善蛋白桑品质。微生物处理能够显著增加蛋白桑的叶茎比,提升了蛋白桑叶片的比例,优化生长结构,不同微生物处理对蛋白桑叶片各饲用品质指标的影响较其相应茎部更为明显,可以根据桑叶和茎秆的蛋白含量进行合理搭配获得饲料不同品级,从整体水平上提升蛋白桑地上部植株的饲用品质。接种微生物...  相似文献
