The population of the endangered plant species Nymphoides peltata in Lake Kasumigaura, Japan, has been declining drastically recently, and seedlings that emerge from the remaining soil seed bank have entirely failed to establish. The decline has followed artificial control of the water level in the lake. To examine the environmental requirements at the seedling establishment stage, we investigated the survival and growth of emerged seedlings at various microsites on the lakeshore by manipulating environmental conditions such as exposure to waves, inundation, and light availability so as to include the conditions of the presumed safe sites. Seedling survival at the early stage was affected most by environmental variables relating to the susceptibility to inundation. Survival until seedling establishment was profoundly affected by light availability as well as by susceptibility to inundation. In all, 136 genets were established in quadrats less prone to inundation and with sufficient light availability, which is consistent with the presumed safe-site characteristics of the original water regime: bare ground exposed during the spring water-level drawdown. Recovering the original water regime with seasonal drawdown will be indispensable for recovering a self-sustainable population. However, as first-aid measures, active restoration efforts through adaptive management using the remnant soil seed bank are urgently needed before the soil seed bank becomes exhausted.  相似文献

Fish Communities in Central Amazonian White- and Blackwater Floodplains   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
In Amazonian floodplains, the flood cycle of the river is becoming the dominant seasonal factor, and fish communities are found to fluctuate greatly over the year. During inundation, fish migrate into floodplain forests to feed on fruits and seeds, in an area more than 300000km2 in size. To document patterns of species diversity, distribution, abundance and temporal dynamics and in order to describe the ecological importance of the inundated forest, floodplain fish were captured using variously sized gill nets in white and black water areas inside and outside the floodplain forests during low, rising, high and falling water level in 1990 and 1991. Dominance varies to some extent in white water between floodplain forest (0.06) and open water (0.11) while it is unchanged in black water (0.04). Black water fish communities were more diverse. Most abundant among white water fish were Liposarcus pardalis, Pygocentrus nattereri, and Pellona flavipinnis, for example, or Plagioscion squamsissimus, Serrasalmus rhombeus, and Serrasalmus manueli in black water. Among the most abundant white water fish, Colossoma macropomum, Mylossoma duriventre and Osteoglossum bicirrhosum occurred almost exclusively in inundated forests. Of the black water species there were a large number of species which were captured only in inundated forest, such as Geophagus cf. altifrons, Hoplias malabaricus, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum and Uaru amphiacanthoides. Catches varied with sample site, water level and direction of water level change. The average CPUE in white and black water was 190 and 41g fishm–2 and day, respectively, with maximum yields at low water and minimum yields at high water. Comparing rising and falling water levels, a significantly higher quantity of fishes was captured at falling water level. In black water, fish catches from the floodplain forest exceeded the open water catch by 183 to 550%, depending on season. Differences in respect of white water are smaller (106–281%). Fish communities in the area under investigation seem to be stochastically assembled, with significant differences between white and black water only. Many fishes move into the floodplain forest not only to feed but probably also for other reasons – to seek shelter, for example.  相似文献

Summary A reliable protocol for regeneration of barley from seedling explants including leaf bases with the complete apical meristem has been developed. Callus induction and shoot regeneration was only achieved when 28 days-old-seedlings were grown in the presence of high concentrations of 2,4-D. The Bulgarian barley variety Ruen commercially important for brewery industry was used as a model. The regeneration response of a range of Bulgarian barley genotypes was evaluated. Seedlings’ successful establishment is of importance in the preemption process of pioneers in wetlands. Although Typha orientalis Presl has been reported as a pioneer in Asia countries, studies on the seedling phase of T. orientalis are not available yet. A mesocosm experiment was conducted to understand the effects of biotic (initial density) and abiotic (nutrient and water level regime) factors on the seedling survival and growth of T. orientalis. Most seedlings survived under low initial density (93.8%) and eutrophic (95.5%) rather than high initial density (64.3%) and ombrotrophic (62.5%). Seedlings under low initial density, eutrophic, and flooded conditions showed relatively higher growth in shoot height. The final number of ramets showed an adverse tendency compared to the survival rate and shoot height particularly depending on the water level regime. T. orientalis compensated its biomass production with producing less but longer shoots under the flooded condition, indicating the phenotypic plasticity of T. orientalis as a deep water species. However, the compensation seemed to be guaranteed only under the condition of sufficient nutrients. Asian T. orientalis seemed not to be a pioneer but a weak-competitor not only in mature plant stage but also in juvenile seedling stage unless sufficient nutrients are guaranteed.  相似文献

Kiushitou (42°28N, 141°9E) is a lowland mire located in a residential area of northern Japan. We examined the 2-D distribution of hydrochemical variables and their seasonal changes in relation to plant communities in an attempt to conserve the Sphagnum fen (Sphagnum subfulvum). This mire is gently sloping and the upper area consists of alder and ash forests, while the lower area is covered with fen communities. The grassy fen, Moliniopsis japonica, occurs throughout the lower area, whereas the Sphagnum fen is restricted to the southwest part of the mire. anova and canonical correspondence analysis revealed that the occurrence of Sphagnum fen is negatively correlated with Mg, Ca and electrical conductivity (EC). These variables indicated that water in the upper forest area contained a high concentration of minerals from the neighboring residential area. Seasonal changes in EC values revealed that the watercourse from a spring point in an upper corner to the lowest drainage ditch was divided into two, southwest and northeast, courses. Because the northeast-course spring water joins mineral-rich water flowing from a point at the upper margin, the northeast part of the lower area contains considerable Ca and Mg. In contrast, the mineral-poor spring water flowing into the southwest part of the mire ensures the survival of the Sphagnum fen. Thus, when we stop the supply of mineral-rich water from the upper margin the area of the Sphagnum fen will expand into the northeast part of the mire. Two-dimensional details of the hydrochemical regime clarify the impact of mineral inflow and the expansion mechanisms of these minerals.  相似文献

This study documented linkages between lakeshore seepage fluxes, pore water chemistry, and aquatic plants in several lakes of the Adirondack Mountains region of New York, USA. Three replicate stations were set up along each of four different lake shorelines. From June through September 1998 and from snowmelt in April through August 1999, seepage flux was measured with seepage meters. Throughout this time period, lake surface water and pore water chemistry were monitored weekly to biweekly. At each station, leaf tissue chemistry of the water lily Nuphar variegatum was measured once in each year. Sediment chemistry and plant abundance were also measured once in 1998. We found that pore water concentrations of base cations, iron, and zinc were related to the direction, magnitude, and variability of seepage fluxes. Concentrations of base cations, iron, and zinc were both highest and most variable where seepage was low (0 to 50mLm–2h–1) in contrast to being more stable where seepage was highest and variable (–608 to 612mLm–2h–1). Leaf tissue chemistry and plant abundance were also related to seepage patterns. N. variegatum leaves had elevated zinc content at stations with low average discharge. Knowledge of seepage patterns helped to explain spatial patterns of elevated trace metal content in both pore water and plant tissues. Our work suggests that the hydrological process of lakeshore seepage exerts important controls on lakeshore biogeochemistry.  相似文献

飞播固沙作为一项快速而有效的现代化治沙措施,已成为毛乌素沙地植被恢复与重建的重要手段。但此项技术仍存在一些问题,如飞播后成苗率较低等。以毛乌素沙地优势植物柠条(Caragana korshinskii)、羊柴(Hedysarum laeve)、油蒿(Artemisia ordosica)与籽蒿(Artemisia sphaerocephala)为研究对象,人工控制7个沙埋深度和9个水分梯度,研究4种植物种子萌发和幼苗出土对沙埋和单次供水的响应,阐明多大的单次降雨才能保证种子萌发与幼苗出土及出土幼苗的维持时间。结果表明,对于柠条和羊柴质量相对较大的种子而言.种子主要在供水量10.20mm,埋藏深度为0.5.2cm的条件下出苗,但在埋藏深度为5cm时这两个物种仍有少量种子能够出苗;而对于油蒿和籽蒿质量相对较小的种子而言,种子主要在供水量10.20mm,埋藏深度为0.5cm时出苗,当埋藏深度为1.5cm和2cm时不能顺利出苗。沙埋深度0.5cm条件下,4个物种具有最高的出苗率和出苗速率。在试验期内(30d),柠条、羊柴和油蒿出土幼苗分别在单次供水量为5、7.5mm和7.5mm时全部死亡,在单次供水量高于15mm时4个种的出土幼苗死亡率大多低于50%,且随供水量的增加出土幼苗死亡率降低。结合毛乌素沙地降雨特点与本次实验结果,0.5cm的沙埋及7.5mm以上的单次降雨是上述4种植物自然条件下出苗较好的重要条件。  相似文献

This study examined the impact of disturbance on the pattern of diversity, forest structure and regeneration of tree species in the Vindhyan dry tropical forest of India. A total of 1500 quadrats distributed over five, 3-ha permanent plots in five sites, differing in degree of disturbance, were used to enumerate and measure the tree species. A total of 65 species with 136,983 individuals were enumerated in the total 15-ha area for stems 30 cm height. The number of species and number of stems ranged from 12 to 50 and 8063–65331 per 3-ha area. The number of species and stems for trees 10 cm dbh ranged from 3 to 28 species, with a mean value of 16 species ha–1, and from 16 to 477 stems, with a mean value of 256 stems ha–1, respectively. The adult based PCA ordination indicated uniqueness of sites in terms of species composition and habitat characteristics. PCA ordination also showed uniqueness of sites in terms of seedling composition, but the seedling and adult distributions were not spatially associated. The distinct species composition at the different sites and at the two life-cycle stages on the same site is indicative of marked spatio-temporal dynamics of the dry tropical forest. The density–diameter semi-logarithmic curves ranged from a near linear to an overall concave appearance with a limited plateau in the mid-diameter ranges. The -diversity and its components decreased with increasing disturbance intensity, reflecting enhanced utilization pressure with increasing disturbance. The site-wise and species-wise regression analyses of the number of individuals in different stages of the species revealed that both the level of disturbance and the nature of species strongly affect the regeneration. In conclusion, although the forest is relatively species-poor, the differential species composition on different sites and the temporal dynamics lend a unique level of diversity to the tropical dry deciduous forest.  相似文献

In the diluvial plain of Lower Saxony ( = Niedersachsen) two types of alder fen woods are found: alder swamp woods (alder carrs) with a more changing water table and inundations in winter, and alder spring woods without hibernal inundation and a more or less constant water table. While all alder swamp woods are Alnion forests, the alder spring woods can be devided into Alnion and Alno-Ulmion forests.All Alnion forests in the diluvial plain of Lower Saxony belong to the association Carici elongatae-Alnetum Schwick. 1933. This association can be devided into three subassociations, C. el.-Al. betuletosum Bodeux 1955, C. el.-Al. typicum Meijer Drees 1936 and C. el.-Al. cardaminetosum Meijer Drees 1936.Low pH-values and high C/N-ratios of the soil are good indicators to distinguish the Carici elongatae-Alnetum betuletosum from the other two subassociations. Humus contents has a tendency to decrease in the sequence C. el.-Al. betuletosum > C. el.-Al. typicum > C. el.-Al cardaminetosum, but is no reliable factor for classification of a single plot. Differences in annual groundwater level variations cause a floristical differentiation only within alderwoods of meso- to eutrophic sites. Here a nearly constant water table or at least no hibernal inundation leads to a Carici elongatae-Alnetum cardaminetosum, while sites which are inundated in winter carry the Carici elongatae-Alnetum typicum. On oligotrophic sites both, swamp and spring woods belong to the Carici elongatae-Alnetum betuletosum.The subdivision of the Carici elongatae-Alnetum for the whole lowlands of northern Central Europe is generally the same as for Lower Saxony. The morphological development and N uptake patterns of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes of Northern European (Nordic) and Pacific Northwest US (PNW) origin were compared under two diurnally fluctuating root temperature regimes in solution culture. The two regimes, 15/5°C and 9/5°C day maximum/night minimum temperatures, simulated soil temperature differences between tilled vs. heavy-residue, no-till conditions, respectively, observed during early spring in eastern Washington. Previous field experiments indicated that some of the Nordic genotypes accumulated more N and dry matter than the PNW cultivars during early spring under no-till conditions. The objective of this experiment was to determined whether these differences 1) are dependent on the temperature of the rooting environment, and 2) are correlated with genotypic differences in NH4 + and NO3 uptake. Overall, shoot N and dry matter accumulation was reduced by 40% due to lower root temperatures during illumination. Leaf emergence was slowed by 14 to 22%, and tiller production was also inhibited. All genotypes absorbed more ammonium than nitrate from equimolar solutions, and the proportion of total N absorbed as NH4 + was slightly higher in the 9/5°C than the 15/5°C regime. A Finnish genotype, HJA80201, accumulated significantly more shoot N than the PNW cultivars, Clark and Steptoe, and also more than a Swedish cultivar, Pernilla, in the 9/5°C regime. In the 15/5°C regime Steptoe did not differ in shoot N from the Nordic genotypes, while Clark remained significantly lower. These differences were not correlated to relative propensity for N form. Root lengths of the Nordic genotypes were significantly greater than the PNW genotypes grown under the 9/5°C regime, while the root lengths in the warmer root temperture regime were not significantly different among genotypes. Higher root elongation rates under low soil temperature conditions may be an inherent adaptive mechanism of the Nordic genotypes. Overall, the data indicate that lower maximum daytime temperatures of the soil surface layer likely account for a significant portion of the growth reductions and lower N uptake observed in no-till systems.  相似文献

Transgenic creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds., cv. Pencross; Poaceae) plants have been obtained by microprojectile bombardment of and regeneration from embryogenic calli with a vector designed to deliver the -glucuronidase (GUS) gene under the control of rice actin 1 5' regulatory sequences. Southern analysis of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified and restriction-digested genomic DNA of four transgenic plants regenerated from these cultures showed the unscrambled integration of the gus fragment. Northern blot analysis confirmed the expression of gus mRNA in one of the transgenic plants. Western blot analysis revealed a high level of accumulation of gus protein. Histochemical assays showed enzymatic activity of -glucuronidase in all parts of the transgenic turfgrass plant. Oxygen isotopic data were used to assess how far waters from the Savannah River, a major river in the Southeastern United States, backed up and inundated the wetlands along a small Coastal Plain tributary during a flood. This approach worked because the water of this tributary, Unper Three Runs, had an oxygen isotopic composition (18O = –4.9 ) distinct from Savannah River water (18O = –3.2 ).Two sample surveys were taken from the mouth of Upper Three Runs to 2 km upstream. Waters were isotopically uniform along the length of the sample transect when both river and tributary water levels were below bankfull. Visual estimates of turbidity taken when both the river and tributary overflowed their channels and inundated adjacent wetlands indicated that Savannah River water extended about 300 meters up the tributary channel. In contrast, the isotopic data indicated that a mixing zone of river and tributary waters extended about 1100 meters upstream. Although this mixing zone was documented only in the channel of Upper Three Runs, it probably extended into adjacent parts of the riparian wetland, potentially affecting ecological processes due to the differing water quality. In this work we report a new method forin vitro chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plant regeneration based on shoot formation from wounded hypocotyls. Chili pepper seeds were surface sterilized and germinated on agar (0.8%) at 25 ± 2°C in the dark. Five factors that may influence shoot regeneration were studied: age of seedlings, hypocotyl wounding site, time elapsed between wounding the hypocotyls and decapitation of seedlings, culture media and cultivars. In order to study the influence of the first three factors on shoot regeneration, the apical, middle or basal hypocotyl regions of seedlings of cv. Mulato Bajio at different stages of development (9, 15, 16, 21 and 28 d old) were wounded with a syringe needle, and the seedlings were cultured on MS semisolid medium without growth regulators at 25 ± 2°C under a 16/8 h light/dark photoperiod (daylight fluorescent lamps; 35 mol m-2 s--1) until decapitation. The seedlings were decapitated (3 mm below the cotyledons) at different times after wounding (0, 2, 4, 10, 12 and 14 d), and each explant was evaluated for bud and shoot formation ( 5 mm in length) at the wounded site after 30 d of incubation. In general, seedlings at the stage of curved hypocotyl (9 d old) wounded in the apical region of hypocotyl were the best explants for shoot regeneration when inoculated on culture medium without growth regulators. Decapitation after wounding also influenced the shoot regeneration efficiency, with 10–14 d being the best period. Up to 90% shoot regeneration in cv. Mulato Bajio was obtained under these conditions. Statistically significant differences were observed for shoot formation among 21 cultivars tested. Regeneration of whole plants was achieved by rooting the shoots with indole-3-butyric acid pulses of 60 mg L–1 for 3 h and then subculturing on MS medium without growth regulators.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Despite the considerable number of studies on the impacts of climate change on alpine plants, there have been few attempts to investigate its effect on regeneration. Recruitment from seeds is a key event in the life-history of plants, affecting their spread and evolution and seasonal changes in climate will inevitably affect recruitment success. Here, an investigation was made of how climate change will affect the timing and the level of germination in eight alpine species of the glacier foreland.

Methods

Using a novel approach which considered the altitudinal variation of temperature as a surrogate for future climate scenarios, seeds were exposed to 12 different cycles of simulated seasonal temperatures in the laboratory, derived from measurements at the soil surface at the study site.

Key Results

Under present climatic conditions, germination occurred in spring, in all but one species, after seeds had experienced autumn and winter seasons. However, autumn warming resulted in a significant increase in germination in all but two species. In contrast, seed germination was less sensitive to changes in spring and/or winter temperatures, which affected only three species.

Conclusions

Climate warming will lead to a shift from spring to autumn emergence but the extent of this change across species will be driven by seed dormancy status. Ungerminated seeds at the end of autumn will be exposed to shorter winter seasons and lower spring temperatures in a future, warmer climate, but these changes will only have a minor impact on germination. The extent to which climate change will be detrimental to regeneration from seed is less likely to be due to a significant negative effect on germination per se, but rather to seedling emergence in seasons that the species are not adapted to experience. Emergence in autumn could have major implications for species currently adapted to emerge in spring.  相似文献

We investigated the carbon supply status in species-rich mediterranean plant communities growing in a bowl-shaped 1-ha CO2 spring area near Sienna, Italy. A geothermic lime-kiln has provided these communities, for as long as historical records are available, with pure CO2 that mixes with ambient air at canopy level to daytime means of 500–1000 ppm CO2. Immediately outside the spring area similar plant communities are growing on similar substrate, and in the same climate, but under ca. 355 ppm CO2. We found no evidence that plants in the CO2 spring area grow faster, flower earlier or become larger. However, we found very large differences in tissue quality among the 40 species studied inside and outside the spring area. Depending on weather conditions, the mean concentration of total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC, sugars and starch) in leaves of herbaceous plants was 38–47% higher in the spring area. Fast growing ruderals growing on garden soil inside and outside the spring area show the same response. Among trees, leaves of the deciduousQuercus pubscens contain twice as much TNC inside as outside the vent area, whereas evergreenQ. ilex leaves show no significant difference. TNC levels in branch wood paralleled leaf values. TNC in shade leaves was also higher. Elevated CO2 had no effect on the sugar fraction, therefore differences in TNC are due to starch accumulation. Leaf nitrogen concentration decreases under elevated CO2. These observations suggest that the commonly reported TNC accumulation and N depletion in leaves growing under elevated CO2 are not restricted to the artificial conditions of short-term CO2 enrichment experiments but persist over very long periods. Such an alteration of tissue composition can be expected to occur in other plant communities also if atmospheric CO2 levels continue to rise. Effects on food webs and nutrient cycling are likely.  相似文献

Cotyledonary explants of 4-day-oldCucumis melo cv. Hale's Best Jumbo in vitro seedlings showed maximum initiation of shoot buds when cultured onto a revised Murashige & Skoog medium supplemented with 5 M indole-3-acetic acid and 5 M benzylaminopurine and cultured at 25–29°C under low light intensity (5–30 mol m-2 s-1). Subculture of the shoot buds onto the same medium without auxin and supplemented with 3 M benzylaminopurine caused the development of shoots from 30% of the buds. The presence of abscisic acid significantly increased the number of explants producing shoot buds. Bud initiation was affected by genotype, seedling age, light intensity, and temperature. Addition of gibberellic acid, thidiazuron or silver nitrate to regeneration medium did not improve either bud initiation or shoot regeneration.  相似文献

研究了物种库限制与生态位限制在湖滨湿地植物分布格局形成过程中的相对重要性。在龙感湖湖滨湿地具有明显水位梯度的湿生植 物区、挺水植物区和沉水植物区采集种子库土样, 采用幼苗萌发法确定了不同水位区种子库的物种成分;并将不同水位区的种子库土样分别置于0、25和50cm3个水位下萌发和生长, 45和90d后比较不同取样区种子库在不同水位处理下所建立的植物群落的异同。结果表明, 不同取样区的种子库物种成分有显著差异, 沿水深梯度呈现明显的带状分布格局。水位处理实验表明, 0cm水位条件下的群落主要由湿生植物和挺水植物组成, 而25和50cm水位下只有沉水植物, 表明不同功能群的物种对水深有不同的耐受力, 生态位限制是决定湿地植物分布格局的关键因子。同时, 挺水植物区的种子库置于沉水条件下, 以及沉水植物区的种子库置于0cm水位下都只能形成极为简单的植物群落, 表明物种库限制对湿地植物群落的形成同样具有显著影响。研究表明, 湿地植物的群落构成与分布格局是由生态位限制和物种库限制共同决定的, 两者的相对重要性可能取决于水体的稳定性。  相似文献

The content of -N-oxalyl-L-,-diaminopropionic acid (ODAP) and the activity of glycolate oxidase (GO) were positively correlated in the leaves of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) seedlings. The activity of GO was kept at a steady level under the high light after treatment with ODAP. Although Na2S can activate GO, it cannot maintain the activity of GO under the high light. The content of ODAP increased and the activity of GO decreased with increasing oxalate concentration used for seedling treatment. The GO activity was high enough to keep photosynthesis at a steady level under high light. These findings suggested that Lathyrus sativus, using oxalate as a precursor to produce ODAP, protected the GO activity at high irradiance by scavenging the hydroxyl radicals.  相似文献
