The authors present some data about the buccal and intestinal microflora of Ophidian Reptiles schooling in the vivaria of the Institute Pasteur of Tunis. They describe two cases of infestation and dead, chiefly symptomatology, of a horned Viper, Cerastes cerastes (L. 1758) and a lebetin Viper, Vipera lebetina (L., 1758) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa Schr?eter, 1885.  相似文献

Lasasaurus beltanae nov. gen. nov. sp., a new procolophonid (Reptilia, Parareptilia) from the Lower Triassic of Madagascar, is represented by a single partial skeleton preserved in a ferro-calcareous nodule from the Middle Sakamena Formation, in the North of the island. This new taxon is unique in possessing peculiar, fine and dendritic crests running along the posterolateral side of the squamosal, widely spaced maxillary teeth, subparallel mesiodistal ridges connecting maxillary teeth to the tooth row, and a strongly acute anterior margin of the copula (hyoid bone). This well-preserved specimen belongs to a juvenile individual. The inclusion of L. beltanae nov. gen. nov. sp. in a phylogenetic analysis suggests that it is close to Theledectinae, Procolophoninae, and Leptopleurinae, though their respective relationships are uncertain. This specimen is the first procolophonid described from Madagascar and represents a minor terrestrial component of a coastal vertebrate assemblage dominated by amphibious to fully-aquatic taxa.  相似文献

In this work, we provide experimental arguments in favor of the fact that components from Macrovipera lebetina and Cerastes cerastes venoms bind to IGR39 melanoma cells but not to HT29D4 cells that derive from carcinoma adenome. Furthermore, Macrovipera lebetina and Cerastes cerastes venoms inhibit the adherence of IGR39 and HT 29-D4 to various extracellular matrix proteins. Macrovipera lebetina and Cerastes cerastes venoms did not inhibit the non specific adherence of IGR 39 cells to polylysine. In addition, binding of components from Cerastes cerastes venom to IGR39 cells is inhibited by GRGDS peptide and by monoclonal antibidy anti-av, while these two components have no effect on the adherence of IGR39 to Macrovipera lebetina venom.  相似文献

Bite-like skin lesions on harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) have been suspected to be caused by grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), and a few field observations have been reported. Bite-like skin lesions observed on stranded animals were characterized by two main components: large flaps of loose or missing skin and blubber with frayed edges and puncture lesions. Definitive demonstration of predation by a grey seal was not reported so far in those stranded animals. In this study, five stranded porpoises with bite-like skin lesions were swabbed for genetic investigations. In addition, the head of a recently dead grey seal was used to mimic bite-like skin injuries on a porpoise carcass. Subsequently, the artificial skin injuries were swabbed, along with the gum of the seal used for inflicting them (positive controls). Total DNA was extracted from the swabs and was used to retrieve a fragment of mitochondrial DNA by PCR. Primers were designed to amplify a specific stretch of mitochondrial DNA known to differ between grey seals and porpoises. The amplicon targeted was successfully amplified from the positive control and from two of the stranded porpoises, and grey seal-specific mitochondrial DNA was retrieved from all those samples. We conclude that (1) it is possible to detect grey seal DNA from dead porpoises even after several days in seawater and (2) bite-like skin lesions found on dead porpoises definitively result from grey seals attacks. The attacks are most likely linked with predation although, in a number of cases, scavenging and aggressive behaviour cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Specimens of Ligidium sp. (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) collected from Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan were found to be infected with parasitic nematodes. We have obtained two Mermithidae (Nematoda) by dissecting the fresh specimen and from the dead specimen of Ligidium, which marks the second known discovery of a mermithid infection in the order Isopoda. Herein, a report on the nuclear 28S rDNA and 18S rDNA sequence of the isolated Mermithidae nematodes and on the morphology of the juveniles is provided.  相似文献

Previously, anilioids (Aniliidae, Anomochilidae, Cylindrophiidae and Uropeltidae) were considered the only extant, non‐macrostomatan alethinophidian snakes. Although their monophyly and intrarelationships remained poorly established, their fossoriality, small gape, and inferred phylogenetic position have been important evidence in orthodox scenarios about early snake evolution. Recent molecular studies including aniliids, cylindrophiids and uropeltids indicate anilioid polyphyly, with the latter two families comprising a clade nested within Macrostomata. We carried out the first molecular phylogenetic analysis to include the very poorly known and seemingly rare Anomochilidae. Only partial sequences of 12S and 16S rRNA mitochondrial genes could be amplified from tissue collected from a single dead specimen of Anomochilus leonardi. Amplification failed for nuclear and other mitochondrial genes, and for all the investigated genes for the holotype and paratype of A. leonardi. Analyses recovered a para‐ or polyphyletic Anilioidea. Anomochilus is recovered as most closely related to Cylindrophis maculatus (rendering Cylindrophiidae possibly paraphyletic). The relatively small amount of available data produces only moderate levels of support, but the stability of taxa and agreement across different analytical methods and with larger analyses of snake phylogeny support the abandonment of Anilioidea as a natural taxon, and the recognition of a higher category for a clade comprising Asian anilioids (Anomochilidae, Cylindrophiidae and Uropeltidae).  相似文献

Studies on the effect of temperature on whole-animal performance traits other than locomotion are rare. Here we investigate the effects of temperature on the performance of the turtle feeding apparatus in a defensive context. We measured bite force and the kinematics of snapping in the Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) over a wide range of body temperatures. Bite force performance was thermally insensitive over the broad range of temperatures typically experienced by these turtles in nature. In contrast, neck extension (velocity, acceleration, and deceleration) and jaw movements (velocity, acceleration, and deceleration) showed clear temperature dependence with peak acceleration and deceleration capacity increasing with increasing temperatures. Our results regarding the temperature dependence of defensive behavior are reflected by the ecology and overall behavior of this species. These data illustrate the necessity for carefully controlling T(b) when carrying out behavioral and functional studies on turtles as temperature affects the velocity, acceleration, and deceleration of jaw and neck extension movements. More generally, these data add to the limited but increasing number of studies showing that temperature may have important effects on feeding and defensive performance in ectotherms.  相似文献

During Pleistocene, the Laurentide ice sheet rearranged and diversified biotic distributions in eastern North America, yet had minimal physical impact in western North America where lineage diversification is instead hypothesized to result from climatic changes. If Pleistocene climatic fluctuations impacted desert species, the latter would reflect patterns of restricted gene flow concomitant with indications of demographic bottlenecks. Accordingly, molecular evidence for refugia should be present within these distributions and for subsequent range expansions as conditions improved. We sought answers to these questions by evaluating mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from four species of rattlesnakes [Crotalus mitchellii (speckled rattlesnake), Crotalus cerastes (sidewinder), Crotalus tigris (tiger rattlesnake), Crotalus ruber (red diamond rattlesnake)] with distributions restricted to desert regions of southwestern North America. We inferred relationships using parsimony and maximum likelihood, tested intraspecific clades for population expansions, applied an isolation-with-migration model to determine bi-directional migration rates (m) among regions, and inferred divergence times for species and clades by applying a semiparametric penalized likelihood approach to our molecular data. Evidence for significant range expansion was present in two of eight regions in two species (Crotalus mitchellii pyrrhus, C. tigris region north). Two species (C. cerastes, C. mitchellii) showed a distribution concomitant with northward displacement of Baja California from mainland México, followed by vicariant separation into subclades. Effects of Pleistocene climate fluctuations were found in the distributions of all four species. Three regional diversification patterns were identified: (i) shallow genetic diversity that resulted from Pleistocene climatic events (C. tigris, C. ruber); (ii) deep Pleistocene divisions indicating allopatric segregation of subclades within refugia (C. mitchellii, C. cerastes); and (iii) lineage diversifications that extended to Pliocene or Late Miocene (C. mitchellii, C. cerastes). Clade-diversifying and clade-constraining effects impacted the four species of rattlesnakes unequally. We found relatively high levels of molecular diversification in the two most broadly distributed species (C. mitchellii, C. cerastes), and lower levels of genetic diversification in the two species (C. tigris, C. ruber) whose ranges are relatively more restricted. Furthermore, in several cases, the distributions of subspecies were not congruent with our molecular information. We suggest regional conservation perspectives for southwestern deserts cannot rely upon subspecies as biodiversity surrogates, but must instead employ a molecular and deep historical perspective as a primary mechanism to frame biodiversity reserves within this region.  相似文献

The Egyptian Sand Viper (Cerastes cerastes) crude venom and subfractions were, for the first time, shown to induce platelet aggregation with agonist activities present in two subfractions. The combined activities of the crude venom components behaved in a unique fashion as compared to the platelet agonists, ADP, collagen and thrombin. The action of the venom was inhibited by conditions that increased cAMP, partially required the formation of thromboxane A2 and was inhibited by the serine protease inhibitor PMSF while being only partially sensitive to leupeptin or soybean trypsin inhibitor. One of the fractionated venom agonists strongly induced serotonin release while the other venom agonist essentially did not. Further characterization of the Cerastes cerastes venom components should broaden our knowledge of the pathology of snake venoms, platelet aggregation and their potential therapeutic value.  相似文献

The present investigation is a retrospective review of snake bites in Riyadh province over the period (2005–2010). A total of 1019 cases of bites admitted to the Ministry of Health medical centers in Riyadh province were analyzed on the basis of age, sex, time of bite and its site on the body, outcome of treatment, antiserum dose and type of snake. Bites occurred throughout the six years with the highest frequency in 2005 and least in 2006 where most of the bite cases were mild and all evolved to cure except four patients who died following the administration of antivenom during 24 h after snake bite. Most of the patients were males (81.7%) and the most attacked age was within the range of 11–30 years (51.5%). All the bites were mainly in the exposed limbs and the most frequently bitten anatomical regions were the lower limbs (427 cases, 41.9%), principally the feet. The study incriminates Cerastes cerastes gasperettii in most of the bites indicating it as the snake of medical importance in Riyadh province. Also, the study indicates low degree of threat in spite of high rate of snake bites as a result of the availability of the medical facilities and the antivenin use in medical centers in Riyadh province.  相似文献

We report the proteomic analysis of the venom of the medically relevant snake, Cerastes cerastes, from Morocco, and the immunoreactivity profile of an experimental monospecific (CcMo_AV against Moroccan C. cerastes venom) and a commercial (Gamma-VIP against Tunisian C. cerastes and M. lebetina venoms) F(ab')(2) antivenoms towards geographic variants of C. cerastes and C. vipera venoms. The venom of C. cerastes is a low-complexity proteome composed of 25-30 toxins belonging to 6 protein families, mainly targetting the hemostatic system. This toxin arsenal explains the clinical picture observed in C. cerastes envenomings. Despite geographic compositional variation, the monospecific CcMo_AV and the Gamma-VIP divalent antivenom produced at Institut Pasteur de Tunis, showed similar immunocapturing capability towards Moroccan, Tunisian, and Egyptian C. cerastes venom proteins. Proteins partially escaping immunorecognition were all identified as PLA(2) molecules. Antivenomic analysis showed low degree of cross-reactivity of Moroccan CcMo_AV and Tunisian Gamma-VIP antivenoms towards C. vipera venom toxins. This study indicates that a more complete therapeutic cover could be achieved by including C. vipera venom in the formulation of venom immunization mixtures, thereby generating a pan-Cerastes antivenom.  相似文献

Abstract: Complete skulls of giant marine reptiles of the Late Jurassic are rare, and so the discovery of the 1.8‐m‐long skull of a pliosaur from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation (Kimmeridgian) of Westbury, Wiltshire, UK, is an important find. The specimen shows most of the cranial and mandibular anatomy, as well as a series of pathological conditions. It was previously referred to Pliosaurus brachyspondylus, but it can be referred reliably only to the genus Pliosaurus, because species within the genus are currently in need of review. The new specimen, together with another from the same locality, also referred to P. brachyspondylus, will be crucial in that systematic revision, and it is likely that the genus Pliosaurus will be found to include several genera. The two Westbury Pliosaurus specimens share many features, including the form of the teeth, but marked differences in the snout and parietal crest suggest sexual dimorphism; the present specimen is probably female. The large size of the animal, the extent of sutural fusion and the pathologies suggest this is an ageing individual. An erosive arthrotic condition of the articular glenoids led to prolonged jaw misalignment, generating a suite of associated bone and dental pathologies. Further damage to the jaw joint may have been the cause of death.  相似文献

We report the first recorded capture of a blue-banded sea snake(Laticauda laticaudata Linnaeus, 1758, Jobeuntti Kun Badabam in Korean) in South Korea based on one male specimen collected from Marado-ri, Seogwiposi, Jeju-do on 20 October 2016. The morphological features of the lateral nostrils, the much wider ventrals than adjacent dorsals, the horizontally undivided rostral, the two prefrontals, and the uniform black bands on the body indicate that the specimen is L. laticaudata. An analysis of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence indicated that the specimen fits well into the known L. laticaudata phylogenetic group, which confirms that the sea krait is L. laticaudata. Including this report, five species of sea snakes(L. laticaudata, L. semifasciata, Hydrophis platurus, H. cyanocinctus, and H. melanocephalus) have now been reported in Korean waters.

Megachirella wachtleri Renesto et Posenato, 2003, a well preserved partial reptile skeleton from the Middle Triassic of the Dolomites (N. Italy), was originally considered a lepidosauromorph, but no phylogenetic analysis was carried out. Consequently, the taxon was overlooked in later phylogenetic analyses of the Diapsida. Here, the holotype and only known specimen of M. wachtleri is redescribed, allowing an investigation of its phylogenetic relationships. Phylogenetic analyses confirm that Megachirella is a lepidosauromorph close to the crown group lepidosaurs (Squamata + Rhynchocephalia). Megachirella enhances our knowledge of the series of morphological modifications that led to the origin of the Lepidosauria, the most diverse clade of extant reptiles.  相似文献

Few pathological cases have been identified in fossils of small mammals. Here we report the most ancient paleopathological evidence identified in a lagomorph (Ochotonidae, middle Miocene). The tibiofibular bone was macro- and microscopically (μCT) inspected to provide a diagnosis, an etiology, and its possible relationship with the individual's cause of death. Osteogenesis (reactive bone growth) and osteolysis, processes related with neoplasms and infections, are identified in the abnormal bony region. Its location (juxta-articular) and morphology allow us to identify it as a joint infection (septic arthritis) consequential of a violent mechanism, such as a bite. Both the origin of bone accumulation (avian pellets) and the poor vital state of the specimen (with a joint infection) point to predation as the most probable cause of death. Up to now, lagomorph paleopathologies had only been described in insular populations, and the present one is the first evidence in a mainland specimen.  相似文献

The effects of the cross-sectional area of food samples on bite force with molar teeth were investigated using raw carrots and surimi gels. We evaluated human bite force for food samples with different sizes between the upper and lower molars using a multiple-point sheet sensor and electromyography (EMG). The bite force curve and EMG clearly showed textural characteristics of the carrot and gel. In particular, the first peak in the bite curves corresponded to breaking point in the compression test. With increasing cross-sectional area of both foodstuffs, the bite force and contact area increased and the average stress to which the specimen was subjected (mean stress) tended to decrease, while the stress produced between the teeth and the specimen (active stress) did not change. Chewing rhythm and EMG activities were not greatly influenced by sample size. These findings suggest that higher bite force might cause difficulty in biting food with a larger cross-sectional area.  相似文献
