Using Japanese literature, we created a consolidated list of host records of butterflies in Japan. The list used the host records described in eight major illustrated reference books, two checklists, and 14 other pieces of literature. The presence of larvae on plants, the observation of larvae eating plants or insects in the field were considered as host records. We collected all species recorded in Japan. Scientific, family, and Japanese names of butterflies were consolidated using the BINRAN database (http://binran.lepimages.jp/). Scientific and Japanese names of host plants were based on the YList database (http://ylist.info/). If scientific names of host plants were not found in YList, we used scientific names based on The Plant List (http://www.theplantlist.org/). Family names of host plants were based on the Catalogue of Life database (http://www.catalogueoflife.org/). Scientific, family, and Japanese names of host insects were based on the MOKUROKU database (http://konchudb.agr.agr.kyushu-u.ac.jp/mokuroku/) for Hymenoptera and the catalogue of the Paraneoptera of Japan published by the Entomological Society of Japan for Hemiptera. We also provided the references of each host record and the original names described in the referred literature. Two datasets, HostDB and ReferenceDB, were created to include 3600 records of butterfly larval hosts in Japan, along with scientific and Japanese names of each species and a literature list. These datasets will be useful for basic and applied biological studies of butterflies. Data files are stored in the Ecological Research Data Archives (http://db.cger.nies.go.jp/JaLTER/ER_DataPapers/) and available from http://hostbj.lepumus.net/. These datasets are published under the Creative Commons License Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/).  相似文献

This data paper describes the native vascular aquatic plant floras of 268 Japanese lakes recorded from 1899–2011. The data were compiled from 201 literature sources, most of which were written in Japanese and published in local journals or individual reports rather than in major scientific journals. The literature was searched using web-based services (i.e., Google Scholar, http://scholar.google.com/; CiNii, http://ci.nii.ac.jp/en; JDreamII, http://pr.jst.go.jp/jdream2/; and ISI, http://apps.webofknowledge.com) and by private communication with experts or local governments. Scientific names were consolidated under currently-accepted nomenclature. Four datasets, FloraDB, LakeDB, SpeciesDB, and LiteratureDB, were created to include records of the flora of each lake in each year, the names and locations of the lakes, the scientific names and synonyms of the aquatic vascular plants, and a literature list, respectively. These data can be used to study long-term changes in the species composition and/or richness of aquatic plants in Japanese lakes.  相似文献

Parental care among salamanders is typically provided by females. A rare case of parental care by male salamanders appears to occur in Cryptobranchidae. Yet, paternal behaviors have rarely been reported from natural populations of any Cryptobranchid salamanders, and their adaptive significance is poorly understood. The present study aimed to examine paternal care behaviors in a fully aquatic Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus) in situ. At the beginning of the summer breeding season, large males, called den-masters, occupy burrows along stream banks for breeding and nesting. We videotaped post-breeding behaviors of two den-masters that stayed with the eggs, one in a natural and the other in an artificial nest in natural streams. We identified three behaviors, tail fanning, agitating and egg eating, to be parental care. Tail fanning provides oxygenated water for the eggs. We found that the den-master in the artificial nest, where dissolved oxygen level was lower, displayed tail fanning more frequently. Agitating the eggs with its head and body likely prevents yolk adhesions. The den-masters selectively ate whiter eggs that appeared to be dead or infected with water mold. This behavior, which we termed hygienic filial cannibalism, likely prevents water mold from spreading over healthy eggs. The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) (http://www.mousephenotype.org) will reveal the pleiotropic functions of every gene in the mouse genome and uncover the wider role of genetic loci within diverse biological systems. Comprehensive informatics solutions are vital to ensuring that this vast array of data is captured in a standardised manner and made accessible to the scientific community for interrogation and analysis. Here we review the existing EuroPhenome and WTSI phenotype informatics systems and the IKMC portal, and present plans for extending these systems and lessons learned to the development of a robust IMPC informatics infrastructure.  相似文献

Triatomines (Heteroptera, Reduviidae) are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease in America. These true bugs have traditionally been considered to be blood suckers, although some species have been catalogued as being entomophagous. By using their highly specialized mouthparts, these insects have evolved a stereotyped habit which includes lifting up the proboscis, piercing and sucking, when the occasion arises. Most triatomines bite their sleeping and unaware vertebrate or invertebrate hosts, but they can also search for other targets, guided, in part, by visual and chemical stimuli. In this study, we observed that triatomines apparently visually identify a drop of water in the distance, then taste it with their legs, upon which proboscis extension and sucking ensues. This invariant behavior or fixed action pattern, observed in several triatomine species (Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma infestans and Panstrongylus geniculatus), was also elicited by a dummy drop of water and guava fruit. We discuss evolutionary and ethological aspects of this innate behavior. Capsule: Northern Gannet Morus bassanus counts obtained from a coastal monitoring network in northern Spain were highly determined by wind conditions.

Aims: To determine how external factors including weather conditions affect seabird counts in a land-based seabird monitoring project (Red de observación de Aves y Mamíferos marinos, RAM project; Seabird & Marine Mammal Observation Network).

Methods: Seabird counts were obtained from four study capes situated in the southeastern part of the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain. Counts were conducted on a monthly-basis for a period of 3 hours starting at dawn on each sampling day. Data used here were compiled over a 10-year period (2006–15).

Results: Northern Gannet numbers were chiefly influenced by meteorological conditions at a local spatial scale. Northwesterly winds were found to positively influence gannet abundance, whereas high relative humidity caused a decrease in abundance. Moreover, gannets were more abundant during the non-breeding period as compared to breeding period.

Conclusion: We recommend considering the effect of the wind and relative humidity on land-based seabird counts in the Bay of Biscay when handling data from the RAM protocol in order to avoid biases and misinterpretation of data. Since seabirds approach the coast during harsh weather conditions, the RAM protocol should be improved in order to better account for the distance at which the birds are seen.  相似文献

This study analyzes land use changes due to human development in the Mkomazi Valley, Tanzania, and its impacts on nature using the SD–Modeling (System Dynamic modeling) technique. Ultimately this method relates environment and economy of society with regard to a seasonal rainfall–based agriculture practice and their harmonization with irrigation agriculture for development sustainability. VENSIM PLE (VENTANA SIMULATION ENVIRONMENT, PERSONAL LEARNING EDITION 2002 VENSIM PLE (VENTANA SIMULATION ENVIRONMENT PERSONAL LEARNING EDITION), 2002, Vensim Product Center,Ventana Systems Inc URL:http://www.vensim.com, E-mail: plesupport@vensim.com  [Google Scholar]) software, which simplified the assessment, was used to build a SD–model that accommodated changes in Population, Deforestation, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and Basin Storage. Model results indicate groundwater behavior, deforestation, public opinion and decreased health of the farmers all relate to changes in land use (i.e., introduction of a rice development project) with its associated environment degradation, deforestation, and poverty due to deforestation. Moreover, these changes might be the cause of animal flight from the Mkomazi game reserve and an increase in human disease and deaths. Finally, it is concluded that uncontrolled human activities and behavior are the main causes of environmental degradation and therefore a brief summary is presented on challenges and opportunities for decision–makers on the sustainable development of the Mkomazi Valley.  相似文献

Current interest in proteasome inhibitors for cancer therapy has stimulated considerable research efforts to identify the molecular pathway to their cytotoxicity with a view to identifying the mechanisms of sensitivity and resistance as well as informing the development of new drugs. Zhao and Vuori describe this month in BMC Biology experiments indicating a novel role of the adaptor protein p130Cas in sensitivity to apoptosis induced not only by proteasome inhibitors but also by the unrelated drug doxorubicin.See research article: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741-7007/9/73  相似文献

New earthworm samples from Cyprus are assessed and discussed. A re-evaluation of specimens previously relegated to the Southern Alpine species Perelia nematogena (Rosa, 1903), revealed two independent species: Perelia phoebea (Cognetti, 1913 Cognetti, L. (1913): Escursioni zoologiche del Dr. E. Festa nell’Isola di Rodi V. Oligocheti. Bollettino dei Musei di zoologia ed anatomia comparata della R. Università di Torino, 28, 16. [Google Scholar]) ,described originally from Rhodes Island, (Greece) and an undescribed species Perelia makrisi sp. n. The new species is similar also to the Levantine Pe. galileana Csuzdi &; Pavlí?ek, 2005 and corroborates the hypotheses that the autochthonous earthworm fauna of Cyprus is of Levantine origin.

Determining associations between intestinal bacteria and continuously measured physiological outcomes is important for understanding the bacteria-host relationship but is not straightforward since abundance data (compositional data) are not normally distributed. To address this issue, we developed a fully Bayesian linear regression model (BRACoD; Bayesian Regression Analysis of Compositional Data) with physiological measurements (continuous data) as a function of a matrix of relative bacterial abundances. Bacteria can be classified as operational taxonomic units or by taxonomy (genus, family, etc.). Bacteria associated with the physiological measurement were identified using a Bayesian variable selection method: Stochastic Search Variable Selection. The output is a list of inclusion probabilities (p^) and coefficients that indicate the strength of the association (β^included) for each bacterial taxa. Tests with simulated communities showed that adopting a cut point value of p^ ≥ 0.3 for identifying included bacteria optimized the true positive rate (TPR) while maintaining a false positive rate (FPR) of ≤ 5%. At this point, the chances of identifying non-contributing bacteria were low and all well-established contributors were included. Comparison with other methods showed that BRACoD (at p^ ≥ 0.3) had higher precision and a higher TPR than a commonly used center log transformed LASSO procedure (clr-LASSO) as well as higher TPR than an off-the-shelf Spike and Slab method after center log transformation (clr-SS). BRACoD was also less likely to include non-contributing bacteria that merely correlate with contributing bacteria. Analysis of a rat microbiome experiment identified 47 operational taxonomic units that contributed to fecal butyrate levels. Of these, 31 were positively and 16 negatively associated with butyrate. Consistent with their known role in butyrate metabolism, most of these fell within the Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae. We conclude that BRACoD provides a more precise and accurate method for determining bacteria associated with a continuous physiological outcome compared to clr-LASSO. It is more sensitive than a generalized clr-SS algorithm, although it has a higher FPR. Its ability to distinguish genuine contributors from correlated bacteria makes it better suited to discriminating bacteria that directly contribute to an outcome. The algorithm corrects for the distortions arising from compositional data making it appropriate for analysis of microbiome data.  相似文献

Animals search for foods and decide their behaviors according to previous experience. Caenorhabditis elegans detects chemicals with a limited number of sensory neurons, allowing us to dissect roles of each neuron for innate and learned behaviors. C. elegans is attracted to salt after exposure to the salt (NaCl) with food. In contrast, it learns to avoid the salt after exposure to the salt without food. In salt-attraction behavior, it is known that the ASE taste sensory neurons (ASEL and ASER) play a major role. However, little is known about mechanisms for learned salt avoidance. Here, through dissecting contributions of ASE neurons for salt chemotaxis, we show that both ASEL and ASER generate salt chemotaxis plasticity. In ASER, we have previously shown that the insulin/PI 3-kinase signaling acts for starvation-induced salt chemotaxis plasticity. This study shows that the PI 3-kinase signaling promotes aversive drive of ASER but not of ASEL. Furthermore, the Gq signaling pathway composed of Gqα EGL-30, diacylglycerol, and nPKC (novel protein kinase C) TTX-4 promotes attractive drive of ASER but not of ASEL. A putative salt receptor GCY-22 guanylyl cyclase is required in ASER for both salt attraction and avoidance. Our results suggest that ASEL and ASER use distinct molecular mechanisms to regulate salt chemotaxis plasticity.ANIMALS show various behaviors in response to environmental cues and modulate behaviors according to previous experience. To understand neuronal plasticity underlying learning, it is important to dissect neurons and molecules for sensing environmental stimuli, storing memory, and executing learned behaviors. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has only 302 neurons and functions of sensory neurons are well characterized (White et al. 1986; Bargmann 2006). C. elegans is attracted to odorants sensed by the AWC olfactory neurons or to salts sensed by the ASE gustatory neurons (Bargmann and Horvitz 1991; Bargmann et al. 1993). The ASE neuron class consists of a bilaterally symmetrical pair, ASE-left (ASEL) and ASE-right (ASER), which sense different sets of ions including Na+ and Cl, respectively (Pierce-Shimomura et al. 2001; Suzuki et al. 2008; Ortiz et al. 2009). ASEL is activated by an increase in salt concentration, whereas ASER is activated by a decrease in salt concentration (Suzuki et al. 2008). In the ASE gustatory neurons, a cyclic GMP (cGMP) signaling pathway mediates sensory transduction (Komatsu et al. 1996; Suzuki et al. 2008; Ortiz et al. 2009). ASEL and ASER express different sets of receptor-type guanylyl cyclases (gcys) (Ortiz et al. 2006). Of these, gcy-22, which is specifically expressed in ASER, is important for attraction to ASER-sensed ions such as Cl (Ortiz et al. 2009).Preference for salts changes according to previous experience (known as gustatory plasticity or salt chemotaxis learning) (Saeki et al. 2001; Jansen et al. 2002; Tomioka et al. 2006). When worms are grown on a medium that contains sodium chloride (NaCl) and food (Escherichia coli), they show attraction to NaCl by using ASE neurons (Bargmann and Horvitz 1991; Suzuki et al. 2008). In contrast, after exposure to the salt under starvation conditions, they show reduced attraction to or even avoid the salt (Saeki et al. 2001; Jansen et al. 2002; Tomioka et al. 2006). In C. elegans, it was proposed that preference for a sensory cue is defined by the sensory neuron that detects the cue (Troemel et al. 1997). ASE neurons play a major role for salt attraction (Bargmann and Horvitz 1991; Suzuki et al. 2008; Ortiz et al. 2009). However, little is known about sensory neurons that drive the learned salt avoidance; it remains unclear whether ASE neurons act as salt receptors for the learned avoidance. We have previously shown that an insulin/PI 3-kinase signaling pathway is essential for salt chemotaxis learning (Tomioka et al. 2006). In C. elegans, the insulin-like signaling is composed of daf-2, age-1, and akt-1, which encode homologs of insulin receptor, PI 3-kinase, and protein kinase B, respectively (Morris et al. 1996; Kimura et al. 1997; Paradis and Ruvkun 1998). Mutants of daf-2, age-1, and akt-1 show attraction to salt even after starvation/NaCl conditioning (Tomioka et al. 2006).daf-18 encodes a homolog of phosphatase PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten), which dephosphorylates phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-triphosphate and counteracts the insulin/PI 3-kinase signaling (Ogg and Ruvkun 1998; Gil et al. 1999; Mihaylova et al. 1999; Rouault et al. 1999; Solari et al. 2005). Mutants of daf-18, in which the PI 3-kinase signaling is activated, show reduced attraction to NaCl even without conditioning. Since the insulin/PI 3-kinase signaling acts in ASER, we proposed that the insulin/PI 3-kinase signaling attenuates the attractive drive of ASER (Tomioka et al. 2006).In C. elegans, diacylglycerol (DAG) regulates functions of motor neurons and sensory neurons. egl-30, which encodes the α-subunit of heterotrimeric G-protein Gq, facilitates production of DAG and enhances locomotory movements (Brundage et al. 1996; Lackner et al. 1999). In the AWC olfactory neurons, a novel protein kinase C-ɛ/η (nPKC-ɛ/η) ortholog TTX-4 (also known as PKC-1), which is one of DAG targets, plays an essential role in attraction behavior to AWC-sensed odors (Okochi et al. 2005; Tsunozaki et al. 2008). GOA-1 Goα regulates olfactory adaptation by antagonizing Gqα–DAG signaling (Matsuki et al. 2006).This study investigated the involvement of the ASE taste receptor neurons in the starvation-induced salt avoidance. We show that both ASEL and ASER contribute to salt chemotaxis learning. Activation of the PI 3-kinase signaling and the Gq/DAG/PKC signaling acted antagonistically in reversal of ASER function, whereas these signaling pathways did not have prominent effects on ASEL function. In ASER, GCY-22 was required for both salt attraction and avoidance. These results suggest that ASE neurons are important for bidirectional chemotaxis and also suggest that distinct molecular mechanisms regulate functions of ASEL and ASER in salt chemotaxis learning.  相似文献

Tyrosine phosphorylation is rare, representing only about 0.5% of phosphorylations in the cell under basal conditions. While mitogenic tyrosine kinase signaling has been extensively explored, the role of phosphotyrosine signaling across the cell cycle and in particular during mitosis is poorly understood.

Two recent, independent studies tackled this question from different angles to reveal exciting new insights into the role of this modification during cell division. ABSTRACT

This article reflects the collective voices of four early childhood visual arts educators, each of whom is a member of the Early Childhood Art Educators (ECAE) Issues Group of the National Arts Educators Association. The authors frame the article around the ECAE position statement, Art: Essential for Early Learning (2016) Early Childhood Art Educators. (2016). Art: Essential for early learning, position statement on early childhood art education (Rev. ed.). Reston, VA: National Art Education Association. Retrieved from https://www.arteducators.org/advocacy/articles/127-position-statement-on-early-childhood-art-education [Google Scholar], which focuses on the central role of art interactions among young children, educators, environments, and materials. The authors describe eight principles that underlie the statement from philosophical viewpoints, and provide practical examples of the principles in action. Amid a varied policy landscape for visual art in early childhood, the authors assert that children need organized, materials-rich environments that invite discovery, interaction, sensory and kinesthetic exploration, wonder, inquiry, and imagination in relationship with responsive educators who value young children's diverse abilities, interests, questions, ideas, and cultural experiences. The authors explore issues and possibilities resulting when educators work to bring visual arts fully and dynamically into the lives of young children in diverse education and care spaces. In closing, the authors explore the realities of visual arts policies in the early childhood education and art education fields while emphasizing the critical need for supportive pedagogical practices in all early childhood classrooms.  相似文献

Scent marking is critical to intraspecific communication in many mammal species, but little is known regarding its role in communication among different species. We used 4 years of motion-triggered video to document the use of scent marking areas—termed “community scrapes”—by pumas (Puma concolor) (http://www.momo-p.com/showdetail-e.php?movieid=momo160812pc01a) and other carnivore species. We found that gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) routinely rubbed their cheeks on puma scrapes (http://www.momo-p.com/showdetail-e.php?movieid=momo160812uc01a), and tested a series of hypotheses to determine its function. We found that gray foxes selected puma scrapes over other objects, and cheek rubbing by foxes was also correlated with how recently a puma had visited the scrape, suggesting that foxes were intent upon accumulating fresh puma scent. Cheek rubbing by foxes was not correlated with their breeding season or with how recently another fox had visited the site. Finally we found a cascading pattern in the occurrence of pumas, coyotes (Canis latrans) and gray foxes at community scrapes, suggesting that gray foxes may use puma scent to deter predation. This is the first published study to find evidence of a subordinate species using the scent of a dominant species to communicate with heterospecifics. The behavioral cascade we found in scent marking patterns also suggests that scent marking could be a mechanism that impacts the distribution and abundance of species.
