Species occurrence and community structure are strongly influenced by multiple factors like habitat selection, species movement capabilities, competition, or conspecific and heterospecific attractions. More specifically, in waterbird communities, previous studies have identified the importance of environmental and structural characteristics of wetlands for their occupation and use. However, the effect of the surrounding landscape configuration remains unknown. In this article, we use a large network of artificial irrigation ponds to evaluate the importance of pond features in comparison to the effect of landscape and spatial configuration on the community at three different spatial scales. Our results show that landscape configuration has relatively little influence on structure of the waterbird community. Pond features were by far the most important variables to describe waterbird abundance and richness. At the species level, we detected differences in habitat preferences relating to species-specific ecological requirements. Our results highlight the importance of using a multiscale approach to understand and predict richness and abundance in waterbird communities. Our findings emphasize the need to maintain high-quality ponds to enhance their suitability for use as breeding and foraging sites.  相似文献

We conducted 14 bird surveys in the Melincué saline lake from 1992 to 2002 (7 in winter and 7 in summer), and we detected 223,643 individuals belonging to 71 species from 17 families. The more abundant species were Fulica leucoptera, Larus maculipennis, Phoenicopterus chilensis, Plegadis chihi, Anas platalea, Himantopus mexicanus, and Rollandia rolland. Bird abundance was similar in winter and summer, whereas species composition differed between seasons. We recorded 65 species in summer and 59 in winter. P. chilensis and A. sibilatrix were more abundant in winter, whereas Ajaia ajaja, Phalacrocorax olivaceus, Ardea ibis, Sterna nilotica, Egretta thula, Mycteria americana, Charadrius collaris, A. versicolor, Calidris fuscicollis, and Ciconia maguari were more abundant in summer. Bird abundance in each survey was positively associated with the lake level. In summer surveys, the highest variation in species composition through the years was associated with water level fluctuations. Shorebirds predominated in those years with lower level, whereas the species that fed mainly on plants or vertebrates predominated in years with higher levels. Those species that fed on invertebrates (not shorebirds) and those that fed on invertebrates and plants predominated in years with intermediate level. The omnivorous species predominated in years of lower level. There were differences among transects in the proportion of different trophic groups. Short-term studies that do not take into account the particular dynamic of these systems may lead to erroneous generalisations. Thus, the long-term information of this study may be useful for management and conservation of species and system.  相似文献

Interpretation of landscape patterns from the perspective of different species allows knowing the way in which they perceive landscape, and how their perception varies with scale. We examined distribution of four small mammal species at different scales over a landscape including protected and grazed areas, and associated species distribution with landscape structure. The study was conducted in the central Monte Desert (Reserve of Ñacuñán). Trap grids were set in both areas at two scales, varying their grain and extent. To determine whether spatial patterns are random, clumped or regular, we used a point pattern analysis. Logistic regressions were performed to relate the presence-absence of small mammals to environmental variables. Intensity of the point pattern was not constant, either in the Reserve or the grazed area. Small mammal abundance exhibited a heterogeneous distribution, and the existence of a first-order effect was detected for all species. No second-order effects were detected, the point pattern was random for all species in both areas. Both areas were differently perceived by rodent species. Habitat structure in both conditions and its variations with scale appear to be important factors affecting distribution patterns.  相似文献

Vegetated areas of rivers and estuaries are capable of affecting the concentration of dissolved and particulate matter in water masses traversing those plant beds. We examined whether different sizes of water chestnut (Trapa natans) beds in the Hudson River, USA, alter dissolved oxygen, nutrients and turbidity of water masses. Ebb–tide water was sampled from four water chestnut beds in the tidal freshwater portion of the Hudson River estuary and each site was sampled multiple times during the growing season and once following plant senescence. Water quality variables included dissolved oxygen, turbidity, dissolved organic carbon, and inorganic nutrients. Samples from the small beds (575 m2 and 624 m2) were compared with large beds (16 600 m2 and 24 820 m2). Dissolved oxygen of water flooding vegetated beds in the hour before high tide was 7.18±1.03 mg/l (mean±standard deviation) with a range of 5.5–9.8 mg/l throughout the growing season. Water samples collected as water ebbed from the plant beds showed that only the large beds had an effect on dissolved oxygen with the largest declines in oxygen exhibited by the largest bed. Decline of dissolved oxygen in the water ebbing from the largest bed averaged 1.5±0.4 mg/l/h with a minimum of 4.5 mg/l, equivalent to 54% of saturation, a level at which sensitive fauna are negatively affected. There were no significant relationships between bed size or plant presence and inorganic nutrients, turbidity or DOC. Ebb–tide nitrate was never lower than 87% of flood tide means. Effective management of invasive plants must consider both the variability in effects among plant beds and the areal coverage of plant bed sizes.  相似文献

A 3-year field study has been carried out on the distribution and abundance of Delphacidae in central Argentina. Insects were collected along a 300 km transect of seven equally spaced sampling sites. At each sampling station there was one sticky trap 6 m above the ground and five sticky traps 1.5 m above the ground. The sampling frequency was every 6 to 15 days during the spring and summer months and monthly during the rest of the year. Delphacodes kuscheli (vector of a local strain of the maize rough dwarf virus, MRDV-RC), Delphacodes haywardi, Delphacodes balboae, Toya spp., Dicranotropis nigricula and Sogatella kolophon meridiana were collected. Among them, D. kuscheli and Toya spp. comprised 67 and 26% of all the delphacid captured. Delphacodes kuscheli showed a geographical gradient in abundance, coincident with the land management gradient which showed a very heterogeneous landscape (in terms of crop species and land management) dedicated to grain production in the north-eastern part of the study area and a less heterogeneous landscape dedicated to cattle breeding (with large extensions covered with pastures where D. kuscheli reproduces and overwinters) in the south-west. Delphacodes kuscheli showed a high dispersal ability and synchronic dynamics, whereas Toya spp. showed a lower dispersal ability with less synchronic dynamics. The implications for the MRDV-RC transmission is discussed.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to analyze the variations in abundance of rodent communities over the last 24 years in a rural area, and their relation to possible changes in climatic variables and land use. The principal change in the area observed along the study period was an increase in the area covered by soybean. The habitats studied were crop fields and borders. The total abundance of rodents did not show a significant trend of variation over time in crop fields while in borders the abundance in autumn–winter (A–W) showed a significant trend to decrease over time. The different rodent species showed a differential response over time. While Calomys laucha and C. musculinus showed a decrease between the period before and after the soybean expansion, Akodon azarae did not change its abundance over time. The mean minimum temperature increased over time while the number of days with frost decreased. Total rodent abundance in A–W was positively associated with the cumulated precipitation of the previous spring–summer period and negatively with the cumulated precipitation of the same period. We conclude that rodent abundance variations in crop fields and borders of the study area are influenced by precipitation, but the observed trends of variation over time are better explained by changes in agricultural practices than by meteorological variables.  相似文献

The effects of local habitat and large-scale landscape factors on species diversity and species interactions were studied using the insect community in stems of the creeping thistle Cirsium arvense . Thistle abundance was higher in fallows than in crop fields and field margins, with fallows providing 67% of thistle abundance within 15 study areas on a landscape scale. Species richness of the herbivores was positively related with thistle abundance, parasitoid species richness was influenced by habitat type and was positively correlated with herbivore species richness. The abundance of herbivores and parasitoids was affected by local factors such as habitat type and host abundance, but also by landscape factors such as the percentage of non-crop area and the isolation of habitats. The infestation rate caused by the agromyzid Melanagromyza aeneoventris was positively related to percent non-crop area, whereas the parasitism rate of this fly increased with increasing habitat diversity on the landscape scale. For these two interactions and for total herbivore abundance, a scale-dependency of the landscape effects was found. The results emphasize that biological diversity and ecological functions within a plant-insect community are not only affected by local habitat factors but also by large-scale landscape characteristics. Hence, to improve future agri-environmental schemes for biodiversity conservation and biological control large-scale landscape effects and their scale-dependency should be considered.  相似文献

Few studies exist documenting changes in rotifer communities over long time intervals. Here, we explore seasonal and long-term variation in rotifer communities in four Polish lakes sampled in 1976 and again in 1997. Rarefied, asymptotic species richness did not differ significantly across study years, although values in 1997 tended to be higher. Simpson’s and Shannon–Wiener diversity measures provided inconsistent temporal results, with only the former indicating significantly higher richness in 1997. Sorensen’s coefficient of community similarity was as high among lakes in 1976 (0.81) and in 1997 (0.76) as within lakes across the 21-year span (0.77). Nonlinear redundancy analysis of species’ abundances revealed large, consistent seasonal changes across lakes, smaller consistent shifts between sampling periods, and small differences between lakes. Collectively, these metrics indicate that species composition was relatively stable among lakes within years and within lakes between years, while species’ abundance patterns were far more variable and most affected by season. SUMMARY 1. Stream reaches contain assortments of various habitat types that can be defined at different spatial scales, such as channel unit (e.g. pools, riffles) and subunit (patches within channel units). We described longitudinal (upstream–downstream) patterns of stream habitat structure by considering subunits as structural elements, and examined their effects on the abundance of masu salmon ( Oncorhynchus masou ) and rosyface dace ( Leuciscus ezoe ) in a third-order tributary of the Teshio River in northern Hokkaido, Japan.
2. Nine subunit types were determined on the basis of water depth, current velocity and substrate, using 0.5 × 0.5 m grids. Although both masu salmon and rosyface dace used pools as a major habitat, the former preferred a subunit type occurring at pool heads (PH subunit) while the latter preferred a slow-current edge type (SE-2 subunit).
3. Along the course of the stream, slow-edge subunits (SE-1, 2 and 3) increased in frequency downstream while fast-edge subunits (FE-1 and 2) decreased, suggesting a downstream development of slow-current edges. Regression analyses indicated that longitudinal variation in masu salmon abundance was explained by the area of PH, rather than pools. Masu salmon density increased with the area of PH. Rosyface dace abundance was explained by a combination of water depth and the area of SE-2, both effects being positive.
4. Longitudinal variations in the abundance of both species were related to the abundance of their preferred habitat at the subunit scale, rather than channel-unit scale. The results emphasise the importance of fine-scale patchiness when examining stream fish habitats.  相似文献

Tropical butterfly conservation strategies often focus on total and/or common species richness to assess the conservation value of a patch or habitat. However, such a strategy overlooks the unique dynamics of rare species. We evaluated the species‐habitat relationships of 209 common, intermediate, and rare butterfly species (including morphospecies) across four habitat types (mature, degraded, or fragmented forest, and urban parks) and two patch sizes (<400 ha, ≥400 ha) in Singapore. Common species richness was consistent across habitat types. Intermediate species richness declined by more than 50 percent in urban parks (relative to all forest habitats), and rare species richness was reduced by 50 percent in degraded and fragmented forest and by 90 percent in urban parks (relative to mature forest). Large patches had comparable overall richness to small patches, but they supported more rare species and three times as many habitat‐restricted species over a similar area. Importantly, a number of rare species were confined to single small patches. Mixed‐effects regression models were constructed to identify habitat and ecological/life history variables associated with butterfly abundance. These models revealed that species with greater habitat specialization, rare larval host plants, few larval host plant genera, and narrow global geographic ranges were more likely to be rare species. Overall, these results demonstrate that the richness of habitat‐restricted and rare species do not follow the same spatial distribution patterns as common species. Therefore, while conserving mature forests is key, effective butterfly conservation in a transformed landscape should take into account rare and habitat‐restricted species.  相似文献

So far, it is poorly understood how differential responses of avian seed dispersers and fruit predators to changes in habitat structure and fruit abundance along land-use gradients may translate into consequences for the seed dispersal of associated plants. We selected a gradient of habitat modification (forest, semi-natural, and rural habitat) characterized by decreasing tree cover and a high variation in local fruit availability. Along this gradient we quantified fruit removal by avian seed dispersers and fruit predators from 18 Sorbus aucuparia trees. We analyzed the relative importance of tree cover and fruit abundance in explaining species richness, abundance and fruit removal rates of both guilds from S. aucuparia trees. Species richness and abundance of seed dispersers decreased with decreasing tree cover, whereas fruit removal by seed dispersers decreased with decreasing fruit abundance independent of tree cover. Both variables had no effect on species richness, abundance and fruit removal by fruit predators. Consequently, seed dispersers dominated relative fruit removal in fruit-rich sites but the dispersal/predation ratio shifted in favor of predation in fruit-poor habitat patches. Our study demonstrates that variation in local habitat structure and fruit abundance can cause guild-specific responses. Such responses may result in a shift in fruit removal regimes and might affect the dispersal ability of dependent fruiting plants. Future studies should aim at possible consequences for plant recruitment and guild-specific responses of frugivores to disturbance gradients on the level of entire plant–frugivore associations.  相似文献

Changes in agricultural practice are predicted across the UK following agricultural reform driven by government policy. The suitability of agri-environment schemes for many species is currently debated because limited quantitative data are collected. In order to understand the changes to biodiversity due to agri-environment schemes, there is a need for studies to not just compare biodiversity and species composition in and out of agri-environment areas, but to factor in the influence of temporal habitat changes. In this study, we investigate the suitability of an agri-environment initiative to support and enhance a small mammal fauna among pastoral hill farms in mid-Wales. Grazed and ungrazed woodlands, riparian habitats, and broadleaf plantations, were compared for small mammal abundance and diversity following a trapping study. Mammal diversity was similar across habitats, though abundance varied significantly. A principle component analysis identified that mammal abundance clustered into three main habitat groups separated by seral stage (early, mid, late). No relationship between mammal abundance and stock grazing was found. A canonical correspondence analysis confirmed that vegetation structure was important in explaining the distribution of captures of mammal species across the landscape. The results for habitat type, and habitat context, suggest that a mix of vegetation seral stages, reflecting a varied vegetation structure, is important to maintain small mammal diversity and abundance across the study area. Heterogeneity in structural diversity at the landscape scale is important to maintain a variety of ground-dwelling mammal species, and particularly because trends in countryside surveys show that woodlands are skewed towards late seral stages. Habitat heterogeneity can be maintained because the hill farms neighbour each other, and the farmers co-operate as a group to manage the landscape. Habitat diversity is therefore possible. These results help us to advocate, and anticipate, the benefits of groups of farms within a landscape.  相似文献

中国滨海湿地是东亚-澳大利西亚迁徙路线上候鸟重要的停歇地、繁殖地和越冬地,土地利用变化所引发的滨海湿地退化导致水鸟栖息地类别和面积发生了很大转变,影响迁徙水鸟种群数量的稳定性。然而,土地利用变化在哪些区域和多大程度上影响了迁徙水鸟的栖息地分布尚不清晰。以土地围垦典型区域黄渤海滨海湿地为研究区,以受胁濒危水鸟物种勺嘴鹬、大滨鹬、大杓鹬、小青脚鹬、黑脸琵鹭、黄嘴白鹭、遗鸥、黑嘴鸥为研究对象,结合物种分布模型MaxEnt和GIS空间分析,模拟2000、2015、2020年水鸟栖息地时空分布,探索过去20年栖息地分布的时空变化,分析水鸟种群变化趋势,识别水鸟栖息地保护优先区域,提出水鸟栖息地保护管理建议。结果显示:2000—2020年,8个水鸟物种栖息地主要分布在渤海湾、莱州湾、江苏盐城沿岸、如东-东台沿岸区域。所有物种的栖息地面积均呈不同程度的下降趋势,其中7个物种栖息地下降比例超过50%,下降的区域主要分布在渤海湾、江苏盐城沿岸、东台条子泥、小洋口沿岸,滨海湿地丧失是导致水鸟栖息地面积下降的直接因素。7个物种种群数量呈下降趋势。研究所确定的水鸟保护优先区面积达240.32 km2...  相似文献

It is generally well understood that some ecological factors select for increased and others for decreased dispersal. However, it has remained difficult to assess how the evolutionary dynamics are influenced by the spatio-temporal structure of the environment. We address this question with an individual-based model that enables habitat structure to be controlled through variables such as patch size, patch turnover rate, and patch quality. Increasing patch size at the expense of patch density can select for more or less dispersal, depending on the initial configuration. In landscapes consisting of high-quality and long-lived habitat patches, patch degradation selects for increased dispersal, yet patch loss may select for reduced dispersal. These trends do not depend on the component of life-history that is affected by habitat quality or the component of life-history through which density-dependence operates. Our results are based on a mathematical method that enables derivation of both the evolutionary stable strategy and the stationary genotype distribution that evolves in a polymorphic population. The two approaches generally lead to similar predictions. However, the evolutionary stable strategy assumes that the ecological and evolutionary time scales can be separated, and we find that violation of this assumption can critically alter the evolutionary outcome.  相似文献
