Pelvic fractures resulting from automotive side impacts are associated with high mortality and morbidity, as well as substantial economic costs. Previous experimental studies have produced varying results regarding the tolerance of the pelvis to lateral force and compression. While bone mineral density (BMD) has been shown to correlate with fracture loads in the proximal femur, no such correlation has been established for the pelvis. Presently, we studied the relationships between total hip BMD and impact response parameters in lateral impacts of twelve isolated human pelves. The results indicated that total hip BMD significantly correlated with fracture force, Fmax, and maximum ring compression, Cmax, of the fractured pelves. These findings are evidence that BMD may be useful in assessing the risk of pelvic fracture in automotive side impacts. Poor correlation was observed between total hip BMD and maximum viscous response, (VC)max, energy at fracture, Epeak, and time to fracture, tpeak. Mean Fmax and calculated tolerances for Cmax and (VC)max were lower than those established in previous studies using full cadavers, likely a result of our removal of soft tissues from the pelves prior to impact.  相似文献

Blood supply of the human cervical sympathetic chain and ganglia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
OBJECTIVE: Cadaveric studies of the blood supply to the human cervical sympathetic chain and ganglia are lacking in the English literature. This study seeks to elucidate the gross blood supply of the cervical sympathetic chain so as to avoid surgical disruption of these vessels and thus decrease the risk of vascular insufficieny and subsequent dysfunction of thoracolumbar autonomic outflow to the head and neck. METHODS: Twelve (24 sides) human cadavers (8 male and 4 female) were dissected and their brachiocephalic veins, internal carotid arteries, and vertebral arteries cannulated. Red and blue latex was injected into the arteries and veins respectively. Dissection of the neck was carefully performed and the blood supply of the cervical sympathetic chain identified. RESULTS: The primary arterial supply to the sympathetic chain and ganglia were from superior to inferior the ascending pharyngeal, ascending cervical, thyrocervical trunk, and supreme intercostal arteries. The primary venous drainage of these structures was primarily by direct posterior branches into the internal jugular vein. In addition, we have found an area at the junction of the lower two-thirds and upper one-third of the neck, which is deficient in blood supply (both arterial and venous). CONCLUSIONS: Although sympathetic injury is a rare consequence of cervical operations, the current data should be useful to the surgeon who operates in the cervical region so as to avoid potential complications from disruption of the primary blood supply of the cervical sympathetic chain and ganglia. Also, future techniques of selective iatrogenic disruption of the blood supply to portions of these structures e.g. stellate ganglion may be helpful in treating entities such as hyperhydrosis.  相似文献

The dynamic response of soft human tissues in hydrostatic compression and simple shear is studied using the Kolsky bar technique. We have made modifications to the technique that allow loading of a soft tissue specimen in hydrostatic compression or simple shear. The dynamic response of human tissues (from stomach, heart, liver, and lung of cadavers) is obtained, and analyzed to provide measures of dynamic bulk modulus and shear response for each tissue type. The dynamic bulk response of these tissues is easily described by a linear fit for the bulk modulus in this pressure range, whereas the dynamic shearing response of these tissues is strongly non-linear, showing a near exponential growth of the shear stress.  相似文献

In an experimental model, iatrogenic Horner syndrome developed after a right carotid sheath surgery in an infant pig (Sus scrofa). Horner syndrome is a classic clinical triad consisting of ipsilateral eyelid ptosis, pupil miosis, and facial anhydrosis. This syndrome results from cervical sympathetic chain (CSC) paresis and usually is acquired in humans. To determine whether the development of Horner syndrome in this situation could be attributed to pig anatomy, we compared the anatomy of the CSC in pigs and humans, by using 10 infant (age, 1 to 3 wk) pig cadavers. The CSC and cranial cervical sympathetic ganglion (CCG) were dissected bilaterally under a surgical microscope. These structures were consistently within the carotid sheaths of the pigs. In contrast, the CSC and CCG are outside the carotid sheath in humans. Awareness of the anatomic variation of the CSC and CCG within the carotid sheath in the pig and the possibility of the same variation in humans may help surgeons to identify and preserve important structures while performing cervical surgery in pigs and humans. Furthermore, this knowledge can aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of schwannoma.  相似文献

Stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) with a local anesthetic increases muscle sympathetic nerve activity in the tibial nerve in humans. However, whether this sympathetic excitation in the tibial nerve is due to a sympathetic blockade in the neck itself, or due to infiltration of a local anesthetic to adjacent nerves including the vagus nerve remains unknown. To rule out one mechanism, we examined the effects of cervical sympathetic trunk transection on renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in anesthetized rats. Seven rats were anesthetized with intraperitoneal urethane. RSNA together with arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded for 15 min before and 30 min after left cervical sympathetic trunk transection. The baroreceptor unloading RSNA obtained by decreasing arterial blood pressure with administration of sodium nitroprusside was also measured. Left cervical sympathetic trunk transection did not have any significant effects on RSNA, baroreceptor unloading RSNA, arterial blood pressure, and heart rate. These data suggest that there was no compensatory increase in RSNA when cervical sympathetic trunk was transected and that the increase in sympathetic nerve activity in the tibial nerve during SGB in humans may result from infiltration of a local anesthetic to adjacent nerves rather than a sympathetic blockade in the neck itself.  相似文献

Chromogranin A (CgA) is an acidic protein co-released with catecholamines during exocytosis from sympathetic nerve terminals and chromaffin cells. Previous work has demonstrated that large scale perturbations in sympathetic nervous system (SNS) functioning result in corresponding changes in CgA levels in plasma. Little is known about the physiologic significance of CgA. We hypothesized that, since CgA and catecholamines are co-released from the same storage vesicles, and since CgA is not subject to reuptake or enzymatic metabolism, plasma CgA should reflect norepinephrine release from sympathetic terminals. We therefore measured venous CgA, norepinephrine levels, and norepinephrine release rate in 30 unmedicated subjects. Although the correlation of CgA with plasma norepinephrine was only modest (r = 0.37, p less than 0.05), its correlation with norepinephrine release rate was highly significant (r = 0.58, p less than 0.001). Thus, CgA may offer a novel perspective on peripheral sympathetic activity.  相似文献

The effects of relative humidity (RH) and temperature on the sporulation of Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum on mycosed cadavers of desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, were assessed in the laboratory. Quantitative assessments of conidial production over 10 days under constant conditions showed that sporulation was optimized at RH > 96% and at temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees C. Under both these conditions >10(9) conidia/cadaver were produced. At 25 degrees C, conidial yield was maximized under conditions in which cadavers remained in contact with damp substrate. Relatively little sporulation occurred at 15 degrees C (< 3 x 10(7) conidia/cadaver) and 40 degrees C (< 4 x 10(6) conidia/cadaver) and no sporulation occurred at 10 or 45 degrees C. Following incubation, conidial yield was closely related to the water content of locust cadavers. In separate tests, locust cadavers were incubated for 10 days under diurnally fluctuating temperature and RH that comprised favorable (25 degrees C/100% RH) alternating with unfavorable (40 degrees C/80% RH) conditions for sporulation. In this case, fewer conidia were produced compared with cadavers that were incubated under the favorable conditions for an equal period cumulatively but were not periodically exposed to unfavorable conditions. However, this reduced sporulation observed with the fluctuating condition was not observed when cadavers were similarly incubated under favorable/unfavorable conditions of temperature but were not periodically exposed to the low RH condition. This result implies that sporulation is a dynamic process, dependent not only on periodic exposure to favorable RH but also on the interrelation of this with low RH. Associated tests and the monitoring of changes in cadaver weights imply that the mechanism driving the reduced sporulation under fluctuating RH is the net water balance of cadavers, i.e. the cumulative ability of the fungus/cadaver to adsorb water necessary for sporulation at high RH is restricted by water loss associated with intermittent exposure to a low RH. The duration of daily exposure to high humidity appears to be a crucial constraint to the recycling ability of M. anisopliae var. acridum.  相似文献

Neuronal survival in the vertebrate peripheral nervous system depends on neurotrophic factors available from target tissues. In an attempt to identify novel survival factors, we have studied the effect of secreted factors from retinal cells on the survival of chick sympathetic ganglion neurons. Embryonic day 10 sympathetic neurons undergo programmed cell death after 48 h without appropriate levels of nerve growth factor (NGF). Retina Conditioned Media (RCM) from explants of embryonic day 11 retinas maintained for 4 days in vitro supported 90% of E10 chick sympathetic neurons after 48 h. Conditioned medium from purified chick retinal Muller glial cells supported nearly 100% of E10 chick sympathetic neurons. Anti-NGF (1 microg/mL) blocked the survival effect of NGF, but did not block the trophic effect of RCM. Neither BDNF nor NT4 (0.1-50 ng/mL) supported E10 sympathetic neuron survival. Incubation of chimeric immunoglobulin-receptors TrkA, TrkB, or TrkC had no effect on RCM-induced sympathetic neuron survival. The survival effects were not blocked by anti-GDNF, anti-TGFbeta, and anti-CNTF and were not mimicked by FGFb (0.1-10 nM). LY294002 at 50 microM, but not PD098059 blocked sympathetic survival induced by RCM. Further, the combination of RCM and NGF did not result in an increase in neuronal survival compared with NGF alone (82% survival after 48 h). The secreted factor in RCM is retained in subfractions with a molecular weight above 100 kDa, binds to heparin, and is unaffected by dialysis, but is heat sensitive. Our results indicate the presence of a high-molecular weight retinal secreted factor that supports sympathetic neurons in culture.  相似文献

Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wize) Brown & Smith is under development as a mycoinsecticide for control of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia Kurdjumov. Interactions with other natural enemies within the agro-ecosystem, such as the coccinellid Hippodamia convergens Guerin, require evaluation before its potential can be realized. In laboratory bioassays H. convergens adults were sprayed with suspensions of P. fumosoroseus conidia at different concentrations (including potential field rates) and mortality assessed. Although a proportion of coccinellids succumbed to infection (the greatest proportion was 22% when the ladybirds had suffered stress) it is unlikely that they would be at risk from infection as a direct result of a spray application unless there were prolonged periods of high humidity or the coccinellids were stressed. When provided with uninfected or P. fumosoroseus -infected D. noxia cadavers as prey, coccinellids consumed more uninfected aphids. The predators never consumed aphid cadavers from which the fungus was erupting or sporulating. Hippodamia convergens is, therefore, unlikely to be a significant intraguild predator of P. fumosoroseus . Predators contaminated with conidia of P. fumosoroseus using different methods (sprayed coccinellids, coccinellids foraging on sprayed aphids, and those foraging in the presence of sporulating D. noxia cadavers) were able to transfer conidia to healthy D. noxia populations and initiate infection in a proportion of those aphids. The proportion of aphids becoming infected was greatest when the coccinellids became contaminated when foraging amongst sporulating cadavers. Some coccinellids also succumbed to infection under these conditions.  相似文献

The characteristic pathological finding in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is non-inflammatory fibrosis of the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT), which lies between the flexor tendons and the visceral synovium (VS). How this fibrosis might affect tendon function is unknown. To better understand the normal function of the SSCT, the relative motion of the middle finger flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS III) tendon and VS was observed during finger flexion in patients with CTS and cadavers with a history of CTS and compared to normal cadavers. A digital camcorder was used to monitor the gliding motion of the FDS III tendon and SSCT in eight patients with idiopathic CTS undergoing carpal tunnel release surgery (CTR), in eight cadavers with an antemortem history of CTS and compared these with eight cadaver controls. There were no significant differences noted in the total movement of the SSCT relative to the FDS III. However, the pattern of SSCT movement relative to the FDS III in the CTS patients and cadavers with an antemortem history of CTS differed from the controls in one of two patterns, reflecting either increased SSCT adherence to FDS III or increased SSCT dissociation from FDS III. In CTS, the gliding characteristics of the SSCT are qualitatively altered. These changes may be the result of increased fibrosis within the SSCT, which in some cases has ruptured, resulting in SSCT-tendon dissociation. Similar changes are also identified postmortem in the CTS patient.  相似文献

Strains of entomopathogenic fungi may have substantial differences in their final stages of mycosis. Insect cadavers are usually overgrown with mycelium after colonization of the insect body, but in many cases, bacterial decomposition of the colonized hosts occurs. We used two Metarhizium robertsii strains in the work: Mak-1 (cadavers become overgrown with mycelium and conidia) and P-72 (cadavers decay after fungal colonization). We conducted a comparative analysis of gut and cadaver microbiota in Colorado potato beetle larvae using 16S rRNA gene sequencing after infection with these strains. In addition, we estimated the content of different forms of nitrogen in cadavers and the influence of cadavers on the growth of Solanum lycopersicum on sand substrates under laboratory conditions. It was shown that infections did not lead to a significant shift in the midgut bacterial communities of infected insects compared to those of untreated insects. Importantly, bacterial communities were similar in both types of cadaver, with predominantly enterobacteria. Decomposing cadavers (P-72) were characterized by increased nitrate and ammonium, and they had a stronger growth-promoting effect on plants compared to cadavers overgrown with mycelium and conidia (Mak-1). We also estimated the colonization and growth of plants after treatment with conidia of both strains cultivated on artificial medium. Both cultures successfully colonized plants, but strain P-72 showed stronger growth promotion than Mak-1. We propose that the use of deviant strains that are unable to sporulate on cadavers leads to a faster (though only passive) flow of nitrogen from killed insects to plants.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was (1) to test the hypothesis that the elastic and failure properties of the cancellous bone of the mandibular condyle depend on the loading direction, and (2) to relate these properties to bone density parameters. Uniaxial compression tests were performed on cylindrical specimens (n=47) obtained from the condyles of 24 embalmed cadavers. Two loading directions were examined, i.e., a direction coinciding with the predominant orientation of the plate-like trabeculae (axial loading) and a direction perpendicular to the plate-like trabeculae (transverse loading). Archimedes' principle was applied to determine bone density parameters. The cancellous bone was in axial loading 3.4 times stiffer and 2.8 times stronger upon failure than in transverse loading. High coefficients of correlation were found among the various mechanical properties and between them and the apparent density and volume fraction. The anisotropic mechanical properties can possibly be considered as a mechanical adaptation to the loading of the condyle in vivo.  相似文献

We examined the influence of insect cadaver desiccation on the virulence and production of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), common natural enemies of many soil-dwelling insects. EPNs are often used in biological control, and we investigated the feasibility of applying EPNs within desiccated insect cadavers. Desiccation studies were conducted using the factitious host, Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae, wax moth larvae) and three EPN species (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora ‘HB1’, Steinernema carpocapsae ‘All’, and Steinernema riobrave). Weights of individual insect cadavers were tracked daily during the desiccation process, and cohorts were placed into emergence traps when average mass losses reached 50%, 60%, and 70% levels. We tracked the proportion of insect cadavers producing infective juveniles (IJs), the number and virulence of IJs produced from desiccated insect cadavers, and the influence of soil water potentials on IJ production of desiccated insect cadavers. We observed apparent differences in the desiccation rate of the insect cadavers among the three species, as well as apparent differences among the three species in both the proportion of insect cadavers producing IJs and IJ production per insect cadaver. Exposure of desiccated insect cadavers to water potentials greater than −2.75 kPa stimulated IJ emergence. Among the nematode species examined, H. bacteriophora exhibited lower proportions of desiccated insect cadavers producing IJs than the other two species. Desiccation significantly reduced the number of IJs produced from insect cadavers. At the 60% mass loss level, however, desiccated insect cadavers from each of the three species successfully produced IJs when exposed to moist sand, suggesting that insect cadaver desiccation may be a useful approach for biological control of soil insect pests.  相似文献

The effects of synthetic atrial natriuretic factor (rANF(3-28)) on sympathetic neurotransmission in the isolated perfused rat kidney was examined. ANF (10(-10)-10(-7) M) had no significant effect on stimulus-induced (1 Hz, 2 min) overflow of endogenous norepinephrine (NE) from the rat kidney. ANF also failed to affect stimulus-induced overflow which was markedly enhanced as a result of prejunctional beta-adrenoceptor activation with isoproterenol (10(-6)M). However, over the same concentration range ANF markedly attenuated the vasoconstrictor response to nerve stimulation. In addition, ANF significantly reduced the renal vasoconstrictor responses to intra-arterial injections of NE and angiotensin II. These results suggest that, while ANF potently inhibits renal sympathetic neurotransmission by inhibition of vascular responsiveness to vasoconstrictor stimuli, ANF does not appear to have a prejunctional effect to alter NE release from renal sympathetic nerves.  相似文献

In order to compare the functional state of sympathetic ganglia in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) with those in normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY), protein synthetic activity was examined by light microscopic autoradiography with 3H-lysine. The number of silver grains over the cytoplasm of ganglion cells in the superior cervical and stellate ganglia of newborn and 30-day-old animals were counted on photographic enlargements. In both sympathetic ganglia there were significantly more silver grains over ganglion cells in SHR compared with age-matched WKY at 15, 60, and 120 min after injection of 3H-lysine. The increased incorporation of the label by both sympathetic ganglia was more marked in newborn than in 30-day-old animals. This result shows that protein synthetic activity in these ganglion cells is increased in SHR from the newborn stage. It is suggested that a congenital hyperfunction of sympathetic ganglia occurs in SHR.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the possibility of compression of axillar artery by medial and lateral fascicle of brachial plexus, authors performed 26 axillar dissections on cadavers. Second part included analysis of 24 selective angiograms of axillar artery of patients with diagnosis of TOS. Third part included the use of modified hyperabduction test for determination of vascular bruit as safe test for diagnosis of axillar compression. Macroscopic changes of axillar artery by compression of medial and lateral fascicle of brachial plexus were present in 11.5%. Specific angiographic horizontal spike-shaped stop of contrast behind the surgical neck of humerus was present in 12.5%. Use of modified hyperabduction test revealed vascular bruit 29.5%. Specific relation of axillar artery and medial and lateral fascicle of brachial plexus revealed another possible etiologic factor in hyperabduction syndrome as a part of TOS. Use of modified hyperabduction test revealed subclinical phase of possible syndrome.  相似文献

Spinal cord injury (SCI) has serious long-term consequences on sympathetic cardiovascular regulation. Orthostatic intolerance results from insufficient baroreflex regulation (BR) of sympathetic outflow to maintain proper blood pressure upon postural changes. Autonomic dysreflexia occurs due to insufficient inhibition of spinal sources of sympathetic activity. Both of these conditions result from the inability to control sympathetic activity caudal to SCI. It is well established that limited motor ability recovers after incomplete SCI. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine whether recovery of BR occurs after chronic, left thoracic spinal cord hemisection at either T(3) or T(8). Baroreflex tests were performed in rats by measuring the reflex response of left (ipsilateral) renal sympathetic nerve activity to decreases and increases in arterial pressure produced by ramped infusions of sodium nitroprusside and phenylephrine, respectively. One week after a T(3) left hemisection, BR function was modestly impaired. However, 8 wk after a T(3) left hemisection, BR function was normal. One week after a T(8) left hemisection, BR function was significantly impaired, and 8 wk after a T(8) left hemisection, BR function was significantly improved. These results indicate that BR of renal sympathetic nerve activity in rats may partially recover after spinal cord hemisections, becoming normal by 8 wk after a T(3) lesion, but not after a T(8) lesion. The nature of the spinal cord and/or brain stem reorganization that mediates this recovery remains to be determined.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic nematodes are commercially applied in aqueous suspension. These biocontrol agents may also be applied in nematode-infected insect cadavers, but this approach may entail problems in storage and ease of handling. We determined the feasibility of formulating nematode-infected insect cadavers to overcome these hindrances. All experiments were conducted with Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar and Galleria mellonella (L.). Nonformulated cadavers were used as controls. Of 19 formulations tested (including combinations of starches, flours, clays, etc.) 1 (starch-clay combination) was found to adhere to the cadaver and to have no significant deleterious effects on nematode reproduction and infectivity; other formulations exhibited poor adhesion or reduced nematode reproduction. Two formulations enabled cadavers to be partially desiccated without affecting reproduction; other formulations and nonformulated cadavers exhibited reduced reproduction upon desiccation. Four-day-old cadavers were more amenable to desiccation than 8-day-old cadavers. Formulated cadavers were more resistant to rupturing and sticking together during agitation than nonformulated cadavers.  相似文献
