Nerocila benrosei n. sp. is described from the hogfish, Lachnolaimus maximus (Walbaum), and the Spanish hogfish, Bodianus rufus (Linnaeus), (Perciformes: Labridae) from the northern Bahamas. Nerocila benrosei differs from all species of Nerocila by having the body of females 1.4-1.9 times as wide as long, instead of 2.0-3.0 times, and pleopods 1 and 2 lacking accessory lamellae. It differs from the only species of Nerocila with which it overlaps geographically, N. lanceolata (Say, 1818), by having the lateral margins of pleonites 1-5 strongly produced ventrally, coxae 5-7 manifestly shorter than the posterolateral projection of the respective pereonite, and a vaulted dorsal surface. The species of Nerocila in the northwestern Atlantic have almost mutually exclusive geographic ranges: New England to Panama, including Bermuda and the northern coast of Cuba (Nerocila lanceolata); Brazil to Trinidad and Tobago (Nerocila fluviatilis Schi?dte and Meinert, 1881); and the northern Bahamas and Bermuda (Nerocila benrosei). No species of Nerocila have been reported from the insular Caribbean. Nerocila benrosei appears to be highly host and site specific.  相似文献

The occurrence, distribution, and biological characteristics of non-native freshwater eels were analyzed using 5524 eels collected from 16 sites in Japan between 1997 and 2005. Three hundred seventy-four fishes (6.8%) were identified as non-native European eels, Anguilla anguilla, while the remainder (93.2%) were native Japanese eels, A. japonica. The European eel was found at 7 sites (44%), including 3 rivers, 2 freshwater lakes, one brackish lake, and one sea bay, suggesting a wide rage of habitat use. This variability of habitat use was also evidenced by the otolith microchemistry, which showed that they had lived in not only freshwater but also in seawater habitats. The sites with European eel were localized within the vicinity of southern Japan where a number of these eels were cultivated in the early 1970’s, suggesting that some had escaped from the culture ponds or were released intentionally into nearby natural waters. The large body size (mean total length: 803 mm), pigmented skin, enlarged eyes, and relatively matured gonads (mean gonad somatic index: 1.9) found in non-native European eels indicated that most had metamorphosed into the migratory silver phase, suggesting their ability to initiate spawning migration. However, the proportion of European eels in Mikawa Bay in 1997 was more than 12%, which decreased markedly to less than 2% after 2001, corresponding to the recent decline in import of European glass eels for aquaculture. This suggests that the population of European eels will decrease in Japanese waters in the future.  相似文献

Despite the intensive use of the Leptopilina genus and its drosophilid hosts as model systems in the study of host–parasitoid interactions, the diversity and distribution of the species occurring in the Asian region remain elusive. Here we report the phylogeny of Japanese Leptopilina species attacking frugivorous drosophilid flies, based on COI, ITS1 and ITS2 sequences. Consistent with molecular data, hybridization experiments and morphological examination, five species were recorded in Japan: Leptopilina heterotoma, L. victoriae and three new species, two occurring in the Ryukyu archipelago, L. ryukyuensis and L. pacifica, and another species, L. japonica, distributed in Honshu and Hokkaido. Leptopilina japonica is further divided into two subspecies, L. j. japonica occurring in Japan, and L. j. formosana occurring in Taiwan. According to these results, we discuss the evolution, speciation and colonization history of Japanese Leptopilina species.  相似文献

From 2003 to 2008, arrivals (including mass) of sea bream Brama japonica, saury Cololabis saira, and spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias, as well as some cases of catches of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus, and Todarodes pacificus, and Onychoteuthis borealijaponica squids were recorded in Pacific waters of Kamchatka in the southwestern sector of the Bering Sea. The penetration of these species far to the north is related to feeding migrations as well as to the passive transfer of water by currents. Migrations of subtropical species to Pacific waters of Kamchatka and the southern part of the Bering Sea depend on thermal conditions and circulation of currents in each particular year and are determined, first of all, by the intensity of the Western Subarctic gyre, although in some years, the migration flow of B. japonica and C. saira from the northeastern part of the Pacific Ocean increases.  相似文献

Symphurus hondoensis Hubbs, 1915, originally described only from the holotype taken in 390–542 m in Suruga Bay Japan, has long been considered a junior synonym ofS. strictus Gilbert, 1905, known from waters off Hawaii, Japan, the Philippine Islands, and South Africa. Based on new information from the holotype and a specimen recently captured from deep waters (789–815 m) off Amami-Oshima Island, southern Japan,S. hondoensis is now established as a valid species.Symphurus hondoensis is unique among congeners in having the combination of a 1–2–3 pattern of interdigitation of proximal dorsal pterygiophores and neural spines, 10 abdominal vertebrae, 14 caudalfin rays, 111–113 dorsal-fin rays, 95 anal-fin rays, 59 total vertebrae, 105–106 scales in longitudinal series, blind side nearly as darkly pigmented as the ocular surface, and a black peritoneum. Recognition ofS. hondoensis increases the number of described species ofSymphurus in waters off Japan to three (S. orientalis Bleeker,S. strictus, andS. hondoensis), with at least one more underscribed species occurring in deepwater hydrothermal vent areas off southern Japan.  相似文献

To clarify the feeding habits of fishes in surf zones, the gut contents of 19 fish species collected in the surf zone of a sandy beach at Sanrimatsubara, western Japan, were examined. Ontogenetic changes in food preference were recognized in seven species (Mugil cephalus cephalus, Lateolabrax latus, Sillago japonica, Paralichthys olivaceus, Paraplagusia japonica, Takifugu poecilonotus, and Takifugu niphobles). A cluster analysis based on dietary overlaps showed that the surf zone fish assemblage comprised six trophic groups (zooplankton, benthic and epiphytic crustacean, detritus, polychaete, fish, and insect feeders). Of these, the most abundant trophic group was zooplankton feeders, along with benthic and epiphytic crustacean feeders.  相似文献

Echinorhynchus hexagrammi Baeva, 1965 is redescribed on the basis of specimens collected from the saffron cod Eleginus gracilis (Tilesius) in Akkeshi Bay (western North Pacific) off Hokkaido, Japan. Eighteen museum specimens deposited as E. salmonis Müller, 1784 from Japanese coastal waters were also re-examined and re-identified as E. hexagrammi. Hexagrammos stelleri Tilesius, Hemitripterus villosus (Pallas), Podothecus sachi (Jordan & Snyder), Sebastes oblongus Günther and Verasper moseri Jordan & Gilbert are recognised as new hosts for E. hexagrammi. This acanthocephalan can be distinguished from three morphologically similar species, E. gadi Zoega in Müller, 1776, E. laurentianus Ronald, 1957 and E. salmonis, by the possession of the following characters: 12–16 (usually 14) rows of hook on the proboscis, a proboscis width of 170–240 μm in males and 195–270 μm in females, a hook root length of 35–45 μm in males and 40–50 μm in females, and linearly or almost linearly arranged cement glands in males.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships were determined for three fish species (Acanthopagrus latus Houttuyn, 1782; Acentrogobius caninus Valenciennes, 1837; and Nematalosa japonica Regan, 1917). Samples were collected from the East China Sea (N 27.306020, E 120.918026), from May to July in 2015–2016. Samples were collected using commercial trawls (5 cm main trawl and 3 cm codend mesh). The Cape Ohma region of Shimokita Peninsula, the northernmost point of Honshu Island, Japan, is subject to both the warm Tsugaru Current and the cold Kurile Current. As a result, the Laminarialean flora includes both cold temperature species (Laminaria japonica Areschoug, Kjellmaniella crassifolia Miyabe and Costaria costata (C. Agardh) Saunders) and warm temperature species (Undaria peterseniana (Kjellman) Okamura, Ecklonia stolonifera Okamura), as well as Undaria pinnatifida (Yendo) Okamura, which is distributed in both waters. The frequency of occurrence (as a measure of distribution) and the biomass of these species were recorded in June 1976 (at 50 points in depths between 8–30 m), July 1988 (192 points, 2.5–25 m) and July 2001 (78 points, 2.5–25 m). Comparison of these data revealed a decrease in cold temperature species and an increase in warm temperature species from 1976 or 1988 to 2001. Long-term data of seawater temperature measured at 5 m depth near the study site showed that mean temperatures in the middle of winter (late January to February) in 1989–2000 were 0.9–1.1 C higher than those in 1980–1988. Higher seawater temperatures in the last decade appear to have affected the frequency of occurrence and biomass of the Laminarialean species along the coasts of Cape Ohma. This result supported our previous conclusion that 1 C higher mean seawater temperature in late January caused a decrease in the biomass of L. japonica (by ca. 64%) along the same coast.  相似文献

On a moderately protected intertidal sand flat in west Kyushu, Japan, most of the population of the cirolanid isopodEurydice nipponica Bruce & Jones (89%–100%) was found in the zones occupied by the thalassinidean ghost shrimpCallianassa japonica Ortmann in July, August and December 1980.C. japonica later extensively expanded its habitat, and in July 1984, when almost the whole sand flat had been densely populated byC. japonica, the range of the distribution ofE. nipponica was the same as that ofC. japonica with a density about 10 times greater than in July 1980. The occurrence ofE. nipponica has previously been recorded from several exposed sandy beaches as well as their adjacent subtidal areas of well oxygenated sands along the coast of Kyushu, but not on more protected shores like the present sand flat. It is suggested thatC. japonica, through its bioturbating activities, produces sediment characteristics approximating those of the exposed sandy beaches which are the preferred habitat ofE. nipponica. It is supposed thatE. nipponica is a facultative commensal ofC. japonica. In a field experiment to excludeC. japonica and to detect its positive influence onE. nipponica, the densities ofE. nipponica were found to be lower in the experimental plots than in the intact plots. Statistically, however, the difference was only weakly significant, and the possible reasons for this are discussed.  相似文献

We evaluated light-related traits ofUlva pertusa Kjellman from the intertidal and upper subtidal zones, and ofUmbraulva japonica (Holmes) Bae & Lee (formerlyUlva japonica) within its upper growth limit of 10 m, in Korean coastal regions.U. pertusa showed significantly higher maximum photosynthetic rates, photosynthetic efficiency, saturating irradiances, and total pigment contents. However, green light-use efficiency at limiting irradiances was notably higher inU. japonica, possibly due to the presence of green light absorbing pigments like siphonaxanthin and siphonein. Non-enzymatic antioxidation capacity as determined by DPPH (α,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging rate was markedly higher inU. pertusa (50.49%) than inU. japonica (8.85%). Both species showed a substantial decrease in optimal photosystem (PS) II efficiency (Fv/ Fm) with increasing PAR doses despite the degree of photoinhibition being more marked inU. japonica. After 24 h in dim light,U. pertusa rapidly and almost fully recovered Fv/ Fm within an hour whileU. japonica exhibited slow and incomplete PSII recovery over the full recovery period. A significant depression in photosynthetic activity with monochromatic UV-B radiation was observed inU. japonica only, followed by slight recovery in dim light. Light use efficiency and high irradiance tolerance may be important ecological axes along which the niche separation of green foliose algae occurs in Korean coastal waters.  相似文献

Native to Japan, Fallopia japonica, most frequently referred to as Japanese knotweed, is a highly problematic invasive weed, particularly in the UK and North America. During surveys for natural enemies of this plant in Japan, two species of Mycosphaerella were collected. One of these was identified as M. polygoni-cuspidati, and is redescribed and neotypified. Causing a damaging leaf spot disease of F. japonica throughout its natural range in Japan, it is absent from the host’s exotic range. The restriction of M. polygoni-cuspidati to F. japonica in its center of origin, together with its severe impact on host fitness, indicates that this is a coevolved natural enemy with high potential as a classical biological control agent for the long-term management of this ecologically and economically important weed. In the field, the fungus has a reduced life cycle, with only spermogonia and pseudothecia (ascomata) being formed. Ascospores are the primary source of infection, and studies show that the mycelium from in vitro cultures is also infective and hyphae penetrate mainly via the stomata. A further, undescribed species of Mycosphaerella co-occurs with M. polygoni-cuspidati, here proposed as the new species M. shimabarensis. Both species have been studied using cultural, morphological and molecular phylogenetic methods.  相似文献

The genus Ceratothoa Dana, 1852 is revised for South African waters and re-diagnosed. Ceratothoa retusa (Schioedte & Meinert, 1883) is recorded from the eastern coast, and Ceratothoa africanae sp. n. and C. famosa sp. n. are described; C. imbricata (Fabricius, 1775) and C. trigonocephala (Leach, 1818), are redescribed, revised and excluded from the South African fauna. Ceratothoa africanae sp. n. can be distinguished by the stout body shape of the female; triangular cephalon with a pointed rostrum; short uropods which do not extend past the pleotelson; large carinae on the pereopod basis; a broad pleon; and large medial lobes on female pleopods. Ceratothoa famosa sp. n. is characterised by the long rectangular body shape; pereonite 1 with a raised medial protrusion; narrow antenna with antennule article 1 expanded; uropods which reach the posterior margin of the pleotelson; narrow rami on uropods; and no appendix masculina on pleopod 2 of the male specimens.  相似文献

Of the 20 pandalid shrimps species and subspecies reported for the Eastern Central Atlantic (26–36° N), 16 were found in one or more Macaronesian archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands) (14–40° N), and 11 of them were recorded to date in the Canary Island waters (27° 30–29° 30 N): Bitias stocki Fransen, 1990; Heterocarpus ensifer ensifer A. Milne-Edwards, 1881; Heterocarpus grimaldii A. Milne-Edwards & Bouvier, 1900; Heterocarpus laevigatus Bate, 1888; Plesionika edwardsii (Brandt, 1851); Plesionika ensis (A. Milne-Edwards, 1881); Plesionika holthuisi Crosnier & Forest, 1968; Plesionika martia martia (A. Milne-Edwards, 1883); Plesionika narval (J.C. Fabricius, 1787); Plesionika williamsi Forest, 1964; and Stylopandalus richardi Coutière, 1905. In the present work, Plesionika antigai Zariquiey Álvarez, 1955 is recorded for the first time from the Canary Islands. As a result of many fishing surveys around the Canary Islands at 27–1550 m depth between 1985 and 1998, information on bathymetric distribution, habitat, size and biology of the 12 Canarian pandalid species is given. The geomorphologic, geographic and oceanographic characteristics of the Canary Islands marine ecosystems could explain the great diversity in the biogeographic patterns of the pandalid species inhabiting this area. The distribution patterns found were: Macaronesian (1 spec.), Atlanto-Mediterranean (1 spec.), Eastern Atlantic warm-temperate (1 spec.), amphi-Atlantic warm (2 spec.), amphi-Atlantic warm-temperate (1 spec.), pantropical (5 spec.), and cosmopolitan (1 spec.).  相似文献

 The age and migratory history of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, collected along the Sanriku Coast of Japan, were examined using otolith microstructure and analysis of strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations. The mean Sr : Ca ratios from the elver mark to the otolith edge indicated that there were eels with several general categories of migratory history, including sea eels that never entered freshwater and others which had entered freshwater for brief periods but returned to the estuary or bay. This first evidence of the occurrence of sea eels in this northern area indicates that Japanese eels of the Sanriku Coast do not necessarily migrate into freshwater rivers. Aega deshaysiana (Milne Edwards, 1840) and A. antillensis Schioedte & Meinert, 1879, have long been confounded, with all records eventually becoming regarded as belonging to one globally distributed species, namely A. deshaysiana. These two species are redescribed and differentiated, with A. schioedteana Bovallius, 1885 remaining in synonymy with A. deshaysiana. Aega deshaysiana occurs only in the eastern North Atlantic and Mediterranean, while A. antillensis is known only from the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. A further two named species are redescribed: A. excisa Richardson, 1910, previously placed in synonymy with A. deshaysiana, and A. magnifica (Dana, 1852). A neotype is designated for A. magnifica. This ‘complex’ or group of Aega species is distinguished from the others by their large eyes, which are usually medially united and occupy most of the head, their large adult size (20–60 mm), a posteriorly acute and defined pleotelson apex, and the uropod rami not extending posteriorly beyond the pleotelson, with exopod held at an oblique angle to the endopod and deeply notched endopod lateral margin. The group is not necessarily monophyletic, as there is a gradation in the depth of the uropod notch from deep to scarcely evident, and in eye size from entirely occupying the head to just separate (though the eyes are always large). Twelve new species in the group are described. All species are considered to be micropredators of fishes and elasmobranches, although prey records are few and unreliable owing to the readiness of these isopods to detach. Species of the group have been recorded from depths varying between 10 m and 600 m and occasionally deeper. Several have extensive distributions ranging from the Southern Ocean to tropical waters. Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed) invades riparian areas and roadsides in New England. This large clonal species drastically alters the appearance of habitats by forming highly productive near-monocultures. To understand how these invasions affect ecosystem processes in New England, we quantified the impacts of F. japonica on species diversity, primary productivity, and nitrogen cycling at five locations in central Massachusetts, USA. In stands of F. japonica and in adjacent uninvaded areas, we recorded the cover of each plant species and measured the aboveground biomass and nitrogen (N) concentrations in plants, along with N retranslocation from F. japonica leaves and several soil characteristics. In addition, we severed rhizomes of peripheral F. japonica shoots to determine if clonal integration contributes to the species’ rapid spread and dominance. Stands of F. japonica had lower species diversity, but greater aboveground biomass and standing N than uninvaded areas. Nitrogen and carbon concentrations in biomass and N mineralization rates in soil did not differ between stands and adjacent areas. Rhizome severing temporarily reduced growth of F. japonica, suggesting that retranslocation of photoassimilates and/or nutrients between shoots via rhizomatal connections may maximize stand level growth rates and facilitate dominance by F. japonica.  相似文献

The adaptation ofCamellia rusticana, an evergreen broad-leaved shrub found in areas of heavy snowfall in Japan, to heavy snowfall environments, and the mechanisms by which it is damaged in winter above the snow, were investigated. The stomatal response and photosynthetic characteristics ofC. rusticana were compared to those ofCamellia japonica found in areas of light snowfall. In field conditions, the mean net photosynthesis ofC. rusticana at photon flux density (PFD) over 200 μmol m−2s−1 (Pn(>200). was 50% larger than that ofC. japonica, but in both light saturated and CO2 saturated conditions, the O2 evolution rate (Pc) ofC. rusticana was not different from that ofC. japonica. Mean leaf conductance at PFD over 200 μmol m−2s−1 (gl(>200)) was about 100% larger than that ofC. japonica in the field. The Pn(>200)) was 50% ratio ofC. rusticana was 37% higher than that ofC. japonica which suggests thatC. rusticana's larger Pn(>200) can be explained by its larger gl(>200). WhenC. rusticana trees wintering underneath the snow were projected above it, the leaves of these plants showed serious drought within five days in non-freezing conditions. Their Pc and the maximum stomatal conductance decreased by half and did not recover. The leaves ofC. rusticana showed larger gl(>200) and a less sensitive stomatal response to the decrease of leaf water potential than that ofC. japonica. The stomata characteristics ofC. rusticana caused larger net photosynthesis than that ofC. japonica during the no snow period, and caused the need for snow cover in winter as protector from winter drought.  相似文献
