The study was composed of 27 persons that displayed vague symptoms similar to those of the victims of Minamata and Iraq. Skew distributions of mercury were observed in individual erythrocytes and neutrophil granulocytes when measured by PIXE. Mercury could not be detected in the platelets. The erythrocytes also displayed lowered concentrations of magnesium and zinc, together with increased concentrations of calcium and strontium. The neutrophils displayed decreased concentrations of magnesium and zinc and increased concentrations of calcium, strontium, and iron. The presence of mercury and the altered elemental profiles in the erythrocytes and the neutrophil granulocytes are suggested as early signs of exposure.  相似文献

The combined effects of vitamin E and selenium were studied in native Anatolian horses subject to strenuous exercise. The concentrations of copper, zinc, iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium were determined in serum by atomic absorption spectrometry in two study groups (n = 25 each), one of which served as untreated controls. After exercising the horses by running 1,500 m in about 7 min, only the copper level and the copper/zinc ratio significantly increased (p < 0.05), but the concentrations of calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium remained unchanged. In horses treated with vitamin E and selenium, the calcium and potassium levels decreased to levels lower than those of untreated controls before and after exercise. The iron levels were not changed by exercise or treatment alone but increased when the horses had been supplemented and exercised. The copper level and the copper/zinc ration increased as a result of exercise in both treated and untreated horses. These changes suggest that supplementation with vitamin E and selenium had an important effect on the serum concentrations of calcium, potassium, copper, iron, and the copper/zinc ratio.  相似文献

The present study aims to examine the effect of supplementation of zinc on the distribution of various elements in the sera of diabetic rats subjected to an acute swimming exercise. A total of 80 Sprague–Dawley-type adult male rats were equally allocated to one of eight groups: Group 1, general; Group 2, zinc-supplemented; Group 3, zinc-supplemented diabetic; Group 4, swimming control; Group 5, zinc-supplemented swimming; Group 6, zinc-supplemented diabetic swimming; Group 7, diabetic swimming; and Group 8, diabetes. The rats were injected with 40 mg/kg/day subcutaneous streptozotocin (STZ) twice, with a 24-h interval between two injections. Zinc was supplemented at a dose of 6 mg/kg/day (ip) for 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected at the end of the 4-week study, and serum levels of lead, cobalt, molybdenum, chrome, sulfur, magnesium, manganese, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, iron, calcium, zinc, and selenium (mg/L) were determined with atomic emission. The lowest molybdenum, chrome, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, lead, selenium, and zinc values were obtained in Group 7 and 8. These same parameters were higher in the swimming exercise group (Group 4), relative to all other groups. The values in zinc-supplemented groups were found lower than the values in Group 4, but higher than those in Group 6 and 7. The results obtained from the study demonstrate that acute swimming exercise and diabetes affect the distribution of various elements in the serum, while zinc supplementation can prevent the negative conditions associated with both exercise and diabetes.  相似文献

Significant alterations in the selenium content of erythrocytes, thrombocytes, and neutrophil granulocytes were observed following a daily supplementation of 200 μg Se + 100 mg vitamin E during a period of 2 months. The neutrophil granulocytes incorporated more selenium than the thrombocytes. The iron content of the thrombocytes decreased on selenium supplementation, while the opposite was noted for the neutrophil granulocytes. The glutathione peroxidase activity was not significantly changed during the period of observation.  相似文献

Atomic absorption spectrophotometric and fluorometric analyses were utilized for the determination of several elements in the whole bodies of both male and female Ascaris lumbricoides suum and from the muscle and kidney of the swine host. Concentrations of cadmium, calcium, copper, lead, magnesium, manganese, iron, selenium, potassium, and zinc in these tissues are reported. Statistical analysis (Tukey's procedure) of the data indicated no differences in metal concentrations between male and female ascarids. There were three instances in which the metal concentrations were statistically different in worm tissues and both hog tissues.  相似文献

A study was made of certain cations present in hemolymph and alimentary tract tissues of healthy and diseased European chafer larvae and the spores of Bacillus popilliae collected from diseased hemolymph. The major ions found in the hemolymph, in order of decreasing abundance, were potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium. Hemolymph of diseased larvae contained relatively higher concentrations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc than hemolymph of healthy larvae. Concomitantly, the concentrations of ions were lower in the mid-gut and anterior intestinal tissues of diseased larvae. Only sodium decreased slightly in the diseased tissues of the rectum and rectal sac; other ions remained unchanged or increased. Little or no manganese or copper was detected in the hemolymph or tissues. The major cations of spores of B. popilliae were sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Small amounts of potassium, manganese, copper, iron, and zinc were detected in the spores. Based on calcium and dipicolinic acid determinations of the spores, sufficient calcium was found to allow for the formation of calcium dipicolinate in the expected concentrations.  相似文献

Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) was used to study element ions in whole bodies of uninfected Biomphalaria glabrata snails and those experimentally infected with larval Schistosoma mansoni trematodes. Infected snails were analysed 8 weeks post-infection. Cohort snails that were left uninfected were analysed at the same time as the infected snails. Sixteen elements (aluminum, boron, barium, calcium, cadmium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium, nickel, lead, selenium, tin and zinc) were found to be present in infected and uninfected whole bodies at concentrations above the detection limit of the ICP-AES analysis. Of these, calcium, cadmium, manganese and sodium were present in significantly higher amounts (Student's t-test, P<0.05) in whole infected versus whole uninfected snails. Variations in the present results compared with other studies reflect intrinsic differences in the larval trematode-snail systems used.  相似文献

In this paper, we report the results of an in vitro experiment on the release of metal ions from orthodontic appliances composed of alloys containing iron, chromium, nickel, silicon, and molybdenum into artificial saliva. The concentrations of magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, potassium, calcium, titanium, vanadium, manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, nickel, and chromium were significantly higher in artificial saliva in which metal brackets, bands, and wires used in orthodontics were incubated. In relation to the maximum acceptable concentrations of metal ions in drinking water and to recommended daily doses, two elements of concern were nickel (573 vs. 15 μg/l in the controls) and chromium (101 vs. 8 μg/l in the controls). Three ion release coefficients were defined: α, a dimensionless multiplication factor; β, the difference in concentrations (in micrograms per liter); and γ, the ion release coefficient (in percent). The elevated levels of metals in saliva are thought to occur by corrosion of the chemical elements in the alloys or welding materials. The concentrations of some groups of dissolved elements appear to be interrelated.  相似文献

The intestinal parasites are noted to be an important health problem in Turkey as similarly reported in the globe. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in total content of essential elements, namely, zinc, iron, copper, cobalt, magnesium, and selenium, in children infected with intestinal parasites aged between 6 and 12 years inhabiting in Hatay Province, Turkey. These essential elements were measured in the children/patient who was positive for intestinal parasites, Giardia intestinalis and Enterobius vermicularis. Scores were obtained from the positive study group (SG), and their age matched the healthy children control group (CG). Serological levels of zinc, iron, copper, cobalt, magnesium, and selenium were analyzed by Varian Liberty Series II inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). The mean magnesium concentrations were found to be statistically different at 95% confidence interval level between study groups. As a result of this study, selenium was found to be uncorrelated with all other elements examined; whereas, copper was observed to have statistically significant correlations with cobalt, magnesium, and zinc. In addition, cobalt-magnesium, cobalt-zinc, and magnesium-zinc metal pairs were found to have statistically significant correlations based on study findings.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of one year of supplementation with iron plus zinc (12 mg/day of Fe+++ and 12.5 mg/day of Zn++), zinc alone (12.5 mg/day of Zn++) and placebo on growth and on the iron, zinc, copper and selenium tissue contents in 30 well-selected children of short stature (16 M and 14 F; 4-11 years old). Before and after supplementation, we measured the concentrations of iron, transferrin, ferritin, zinc and copper in serum, of zinc in erythrocytes and leukocytes, and of zinc, copper and selenium in hair, as well as glutathione peroxidase activity in erythrocytes. Before supplementation, ferritin and serum, erythrocyte and hair zinc contents were significantly lower than in age-matched controls, while the other measured indices were in the normal range. Iron plus zinc supplementation caused an improvement in growth rate in all subjects, i.e., the median Z-score increased from -2.22 +/- 0.45 to -0.64 +/- 0.55; (p < 0.01). In the zinc-supplemented group, only the subjects whose ferritin levels were higher than 20 ng/L before supplementation showed a similar improvement of growth rate. Iron plus zinc supplementation could be a reasonable treatment in short, prepubertal children affected by marginal zinc and iron deficiency.  相似文献

OAS1 is the small form and OAS2 is the medium form of the human interferon-induced 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetases. The p42 isoform of OAS1 and the p69 isoform of OAS2 have been expressed in insect cells and purified to give pure, highly active 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetase. The catalysis of 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthesis is strictly dependent on double-stranded RNA and magnesium ions. We have examined the effect of a series of divalent metal ions: copper, iron and zinc ions strongly inhibited the enzymatic activity, cobalt and nickel ions were partly inhibitory whereas calcium and manganese ions were without effect. However, manganese ions can replace magnesium ions as activator. The inhibitory effect of zinc ions was characterised in detail. The inhibitory constants of Zn(2+) were estimated to be 0.10 mM for OAS1p42 and to 0.02 mM for OAS2p69. Cross-linking experiments showed that zinc ions can control the oligomerisation by enhancing the formation of tetrameric forms of OAS1p42  相似文献

Trace element disturbance is often observed in hemodialysis patients. While trace element concentrations have been reported in blood samples from hemodialysis patients, they have not been well investigated in scalp hair. In the present study, 22 trace elemental concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry in the scalp hair of 80 male hemodialysis patients and compared with those of 100 healthy male subjects. In hemodialysis patients, the concentrations of beryllium, arsenic, magnesium, chromium, manganese, iron, selenium, molybdenum, iodine, vanadium, and cobalt were significantly higher than those in healthy subjects, while lead, mercury, copper, germanium, and bromine were significantly lower than those in the former group. No significant differences were observed for lithium, aluminum, cadmium, zinc, boron, or nickel. There were significant positive correlations between the duration of hemodialysis and the magnesium and manganese concentrations. There was a significant negative correlation between cadmium concentration and the duration of hemodialysis. There were significant positive correlations between dialysis efficacy (Kt/V) and magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium concentrations. In conclusion, trace element concentrations of the scalp hair are different between hemodialysis patients and healthy subjects. Essential trace elements, such as magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium, may be affected by the duration of hemodialysis and Kt/V.  相似文献

X-ray radiation is detrimental to human cells and may lead to development of life-threatening diseases. Cigarette paper and cigarette smoke contain toxic elements, whereas vitamins C and E (VCE) may have regulator effects on the elements. We investigated effects of VCE administration on X-ray-induced element changes in blood of smoker and nonsmoker X-ray technicians. Twenty technicians and 30 healthy age-matched control subjects were used in the study. Ten of the X-ray technicians and 15 of the control were smokers. Blood serum samples were taken from the control. Oral vitamins C (500 mg) and E (150 mg) were supplemented daily to the smoker and nonsmoker X-ray technicians for 5 weeks. Serum samples were taken from the X-ray technicians before and after 5 weeks. Copper, zinc, selenium, aluminum, iron, magnesium, and calcium levels were investigated in control and X-ray technicians, both smokers and nonsmokers. Copper, zinc, and selenium levels were lower in the total X-ray group and smoker X-ray group than in control and nonsmoker X-ray group, although iron, magnesium, and calcium levels were higher in X-ray group than in control. The copper, zinc, selenium, and aluminum levels were higher in the VCE treatment group than those in X-ray group, although magnesium and calcium levels were decreased by the treatment. The serum zinc, copper, selenium, and magnesium levels were lower in smoker control group when compared to nonsmoker control group. The serum zinc levels were lower in smoker X-ray group than nonsmoker X-ray group, although iron level was higher in smoker X-ray group than in nonsmoker X-ray group. VCE prevents the smoke and X-ray-induced selenium, zinc, magnesium, and copper decrease to strengthen the antioxidant trace element levels in the serum of the technicians.  相似文献

Summary Two experiments on cacao seedlings grown in sand culture are described, the first of which was concerned with variations in the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulfur (the macronutrient experiment) and the second dealing with variations in the levels of iron, copper, zinc, boron, manganese, and molybdenum (the micronutrient experiment). Many of the deficiency symptoms obtained were similar to those reported in the literature and they have not been described again. However, additional information is provided for symptoms of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, boron, and molybdenum deficiencies. The effects of all treatments on the dry weights of leaves, stems, and roots are presented. The effects of the macronutrient treatments on the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the leaves of eight month old plants and the effects of micronutrient treatments on the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, boron, molybdenum, sodium, and aluminium in the leaves of eleven-month-old plants are presented and discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the status of serum trace elements: zinc, copper, manganese, iron, calcium, and magnesium concentrations in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. Forty-eight obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and 48 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for zinc, copper, iron, calcium, and magnesium) as well as graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (for manganese). Data were analyzed using independent t test, Pearson's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. Statistical analysis of these data showed a definite pattern of variation among certain elements in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder compared to controls. In patients' serum, zinc, iron, and magnesium concentrations decreased significantly (p<0.05) compared to the controls. Serum manganese and calcium concentrations were significantly higher (p<0.05) in patients compared to the controls. These data showed a definite imbalance in the interelement relations in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients compared to controls and therefore suggest a disturbance in the element homeostasis.  相似文献

Background

Nutrient minerals are essential yet potentially toxic, and homeostatic mechanisms are required to regulate their intracellular levels. We describe here a genome-wide screen for genes involved in the homeostasis of minerals in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), we assayed 4,385 mutant strains for the accumulation of 13 elements (calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, sulfur, and zinc). We refer to the resulting accumulation profile as the yeast 'ionome'.  相似文献

In this study, we report the effect of zinc supplementation on the distribution of elements in kidney tissue of diabetic rats subjected to acute swimming exercise. Diabetes was induced by two subcutaneous injections of 40 mg/kg of streptozotocin within a 24-h period. Zinc was given intraperitoneally at a dose of 6 mg/kg per day for a period of 4 weeks. The rats (n = 80) were equally divided into eight study groups: controls, zinc-supplemented, swimming, diabetic, zinc-supplemented diabetic, zinc-supplemented swimming, diabetic swimming, and zinc-supplemented diabetic swimming. The levels of lead, cobalt, molybdenum, chromium, boron, magnesium, iron, copper, calcium, zinc, and selenium were determined in the kidney tissue samples by ICP-AES. Higher molybdenum, calcium, zinc, and selenium values were found in both swimming and nonswimming diabetic rats. Significantly higher iron values were found in swimming, diabetic, diabetic swimming, and zinc-supplemented diabetic swimming rats (p < 0.001). Diabetic, zinc-supplemented diabetic, diabetic swimming, and zinc-supplemented diabetic swimming rats had the highest copper values. These results show that zinc supplementation normalized the higher levels of molybdenum, calcium, selenium, and iron levels seen in diabetic rats, indicating that zinc may have a regulatory effect on element metabolism in kidney tissue.  相似文献

Selenium is a main component of glutathione peroxidase (GPX), a key antioxidant enzyme. Other elements, such as zinc, copper, manganese and iron, are also involved in the pathogenesis of oxidative damage as well as in other important metabolic pathways. The effects of selenium supplementation on the metabolism of these elements have yield controversial results .The aim of this study is to analyse the effects of selenium supplementation on liver, muscle and urinary excretion of zinc, copper, iron and manganese in a situation of oxidative stress, such as protein deficiency. The experimental design included four groups of adult male Sprague–Dawley rats, which received the Lieber–DeCarli control diet, an isocaloric 2 % protein-containing diet and another similar two groups to which selenomethionine (6 mg/l liquid diet) was added. After sacrifice (5 weeks later), muscle, liver and serum selenium were determined, as well as muscle, liver and urinary zinc, copper, manganese and iron and liver GPX activity and liver malondialdehyde. Selenium addition led to decreased liver copper, increased muscle copper, increased copper excretion and increased liver iron, whereas zinc and manganese parameters were essentially unaltered. Muscle, liver and serum selenium were all significantly correlated with liver GPX activity.  相似文献

Binary and ternary systems involving adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP), 2,2′-dipyridylamine (DPA) and magnesium, calcium, strontium, manganese, cobalt, copper, and zinc(II) metal ions have been investigated in aqueous media by potentiometric titrations. The analysis of the titration curves shows the existence of M(ATP)2−, M(ATP)(H), and M(ATP)2(H)24− species for alkaline-earth metal ions, while no ternary complex can be detected. For transition metal ions both binary and ternary species are found. Binary M(ATP)2(H)24− complexes are present in solutions containing manganese and cobalt(II) metal ions but these species cannot be revealed in the case of copper and zinc(II). Ternary complexes as M(ATP)(DPA)2− and M(ATP)(DPA)(H) are common to all transition metals. Binuclear and hydroxo complexes as M2(ATP)(OH) and M(ATP)(OH)3− are found only for copper and zinc(II). A hypothesis on the possible role of the species M-ATP in 1:2 ratio in the dephosphorylation mechanism is advanced on the basis of a comparison between the equilibrium data in the solution phase and the solid state structures of the magnesium, calcium, and manganese(II)- ATP-DPA systems.  相似文献

Phosphatase activity in intact Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes has been demonstrated. After subcellular fractionation three activities were characterized: (a) a membrane-bound microsomal acid activity with an optimum pH of 4.0 and a Km of 1.2 mM, strongly inhibited by tartrate and fluoride; (b) a soluble cytosolic acid activity with an optimum pH of 5.5 and a Km of 0.95 mM, strongly inhibited by p-hydroxymercuribenzoate, EDTA and copper ions and activated by cyanide, manganese and magnesium ions; and (c) a soluble cytosolic alkaline activity with an optimum pH of 8.0 and a Km of 3.8 mM, inhibited by p-hydroxymercuribenzoate, fluoride, EDTA, and copper, calcium and zinc ions. This activity was increased by magnesium and manganese ions.  相似文献
