Abstract

Lignocellulosic biomass (LB) is the renewable feedstock for the production of fuel/energy, feed/food, chemicals, and materials. LB could also be the versatile source of the functional oligosaccharides, which are non-digestible food ingredients having numerous applications in food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical industries, and others. The burgeoning functional food demand is expected to be more than US$440 billion in 2022. Because of higher stability at low pH and high temperature, oligosaccharides stimulate the growth of prebiotic bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are major constituents of oligosaccharides consisting of 2–7 xylose monomeric units linked via β-(1,4)-linkages. XOS can be obtained from various agro-residues by thermochemical pretreatment, enzymatic or chemoenzymatic methods. While thermochemical methods are fast, reproducible, enzymatic methods are substrate specific, costly, and produce minimum side products. Enzymatic methods are preferred for the production of food grade and pharmaceutically important oligosaccharides. XOS are potent prebiotics having antioxidant properties and enhance the bio-adsorption of calcium and improving bowel functions, etc. LB can cater to the increasing demand of oligosaccharides because of their foreseeable amount and the advancements in technology to recover oligosaccharides. This paper summarizes the methods for oligosaccharides production from LB, classification, and benefits of oligosaccharides on human health.  相似文献

The pectic substances, located primarily in the middle lamella between cells in higher plant tissues, are complex polysaccharides. They include the negatively charged rhamnogalacturonans, and the neutral arabinogalactans I and II and l-arabinans. These polysaccharides add viscosity to juices but may also form hazes and precipitates and retard maximum recovery of juices from the fruit. The rhamnogalacturonans are degraded by the enzymes pectin methylesterase and polygalacturonase normally present in plant tissues and by these enzymes and pectate lyase in microbially derived commercial pectic enzymes added during processing. The presence of a?abinofuranosidase, which degrades l-arabinans, in commercial pectic enzyme preparations, can cause haze formation in juices such as apple and pear.  相似文献

The production of an alkali-stable xylanase, with dual pH optima, from haloalkalophilic Staphylococcus sp. SG-13 has been enhanced using agro-residues in submerged fermentation and a biphasic growth system. The agro-residues such as wheat bran, sugarcane bagasse, corncobs and poplar wood when used as sole carbon source, improved the xylanase yield by five-fold as compared to xylose and xylan. Staphylococcus sp. SG-13 also produced equally good amounts of xylanase when grown simply in deionized water (pH 8.0) supplemented with agro-residues as sole carbon source. In the biphasic growth system (lower layer containing agricultural residue set in agar medium with liquid medium above it), the prime substrate, wheat bran (1% w/v), resulted in maximum xylanase production of 4525 U l–1 (pH 7.5) and 4540 U l–1 (pH 9.2) at an agar: broth ratio of 4.0 after 48 h of incubation at 37 °C under static conditions. In general, the cost-effective agro-residues were found to be more suitable inducers for xylanase production over expensive substrates like xylan.  相似文献

The growing interest of consumers towards nutritionally enriched, and health promoting foods, provoke interest in the eventual development of fermented functional foods. Soymilk is a growing trend that can serve as a low-cost non-dairy alternative with improved functional and nutritional properties. Soymilk acts as a good nutrition media for the growth and proliferation of the micro-organism as well as for their bioactivities. The bioactive compounds produced by fermentation of soymilk with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) exhibit enhanced nutritional values, and several improved health benefits including antihypertensive, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer and hypocholesterolaemic effects. The fermented soymilk is acquiring a significant position in the functional food industry due to its increased techno-functional qualities as well as ensuring the survivability of probiotic bacteria producing diverse metabolites. This review covers the important benefits conferred by the consumption of soymilk fermented by LAB producing bioactive compounds. It provides a holistic approach to obtain existing knowledge on the biofunctional attributes of fermented soymilk, with a focus on the functionality of soymilk fermented by LAB.  相似文献

Many researchers have focused chitosan as a source of potential bioactive material during past few decades. However, chitosan has several drawbacks to be utilized in biological applications, including poor solubility under physiological conditions. Therefore, a new interest has recently been emerged on partially hydrolyzed chitosan, chitosan oligosaccharides (COS). During the resent past, several technological approaches have been taken to prepare COS and, enzymatic preparation methods captured a great interest due to safe and non-toxic concerns. With time, new improvements were introduced to enzymatic production and presently it has been developed to a continuous production process. Many of the biological activities reported for COS, such as antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, and immunostimulant effects are depend on their physico-chemical properties. In this review, we have summarized different enzymatic preparation methods of COS and some of their reported biological activities.  相似文献

Nowadays, aquaculture industry still confronts several disease-related problems mainly caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites. In the last decade, the use of mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) in fish production has received increased attention due to its beneficial effects on fish performance and disease resistance. This review shows the MOS use in aquaculture with a specific emphasis on the effectiveness of the several MOS forms available in the market related to disease resistance, fish nutrition and the possible mechanisms involved. Among the main beneficial effects attributed to MOS dietary supplementation, enhanced fish performance, feed efficiency and pathogen protection by potentiation of the systemic and local immune system and the reinforcement of the epithelial barrier structure and functionality are some of the most commonly demonstrated benefits. These combined effects suggest that the reinforcement of the intestinal integrity and functionality, together with the stimulation of the innate immune system, are the primary mode of action of MOS in fish. However, the supplementation strategy related to the structure of the MOS added, the correct dose and duration, as well as fish species, size and culture conditions are determinant factors to achieve improvements in health status and growth performance.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of employing biomass resources from different origin as feedstocks for fermentative hydrogen production. Mild-acid pretreated and hydrolysed barley straw (BS) and corn stalk (CS), hydrolysed barley grains (BG) and corn grains (CG), and sugar beet extract (SB) were comparatively evaluated for fermentative hydrogen production. Pretreatments and/or enzymatic hydrolysis led to 27, 37, 56, 74 and 45 g soluble sugars/100 g dry BS, CS, BG, CG and SB, respectively. A rapid test was applied to evaluate the fermentability of the hydrolysates and SB extract. The thermophilic bacterium Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus showed high hydrogen production on hydrolysates of mild-acid pretreated BS, hydrolysates of BG and CG, and SB extract. Mild-acid pretreated CS showed limited fermentability, which was partially due to inhibitory products released in the hydrolysates, implying the need for the employment of a milder pretreatment method. The difference in the fermentability of BS and CS is in strong contrast to the similarity of the composition of these two feedstocks. The importance of performing fermentability tests to determine the suitability of a feedstock for hydrogen production was confirmed.  相似文献

A method for structural characterization of oligosaccharides after preparing uv-absorbing derivatives is described. The derivatives can be rapidly analyzed and purified by high-performance liquid chromatography, with separation of various structures determined primarily by size and sugar composition. Derivatization requires as little as 0.5-1.0 nmol of oligosaccharide, and detection of down to 50 pmol of oligosaccharide is possible by monitoring absorbance at 229 nm. In addition, the carbohydrate portion of the derivative was found to retain its sensitivity to exoglycosidases, allowing sequential enzymatic digestions for determination of sugar sequence and anomerity to be performed. The derivatives also possessed a site of potential positive charge, making them amenable to analysis by fast-atom bombardment-mass spectrometry. Permethylation of the derivatives permitted their separation by capillary gas chromatography, thus allowing investigation of their structures by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The combination of these techniques will allow almost the complete structure of small amounts of oligosaccharides to be determined.  相似文献

Biodiversity loss during the Anthropocene is a serious ecological challenge. Pollinators are important vectors that provide multiple essential ecosystem services but are declining rapidly in this changing world. However, several studies have argued that a high abundance of managed bee pollinators, such as honeybees (Apis mellifera), may be sufficient to provide pollination services for crop productivity, and sociological studies indicate that the majority of farmers worldwide do not recognize the contribution of wild pollinator diversity to agricultural yield. Here, we review the importance of pollinator diversity in natural and agricultural ecosystems that may be thwarted by the increase in abundance of managed pollinators such as honeybees. We also emphasize the additional roles diverse pollinator communities play in environmental safety, culture, and aesthetics. Research indicates that in natural ecosystems, pollinator diversity enhances pollination during environmental and climatic perturbations, thus alleviating pollen limitation. In agricultural ecosystems, pollinator diversity increases the quality and quantity of crop yield. Furthermore, studies indicate that many pollinator groups are useful in monitoring environmental pollution, aid in pest and disease control, and provide cultural and aesthetic value. During the uncertainties that may accompany rapid environmental changes in the Anthropocene, the conservation of pollinator diversity must expand beyond bee conservation. Similarly, the value of pollinator diversity maintenance extends beyond the provision of pollination services. Accordingly, conservation of pollinator diversity requires an interdisciplinary approach with contributions from environmentalists, taxonomists, and social scientists, including artists, who can shape opinions and behavior.  相似文献

A new source for the production of bioactive glucuronic acid oligosaccharides (GlcUAOs) from the depolymerization of green seaweed Ulva lactuca glucuronan (Algal glucuronan) has been investigated. Algal glucuronan purification was optimized by the acidic precipitation method which allowed us to separate the polysaccharide mixture extracted from the cell wall of Ulva lactuca using hot water containing sodium oxalate. A series of the GlcUAOs were obtained by enzyme degradation of algal glucuronan with a glucuronan lyase (GL) isolated from Trichoderma strain. The putative bioactive GlcUAOs generated were then purified by size-exclusion chromatography in gram quantity and characterized by 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy and ESI-Q/TOF-mass spectrometry.  相似文献

This paper quantifies the relationship between risk aversion and discount rates on the one hand and height and weight on the other. It studies this link in the context of poor households in Cambodia. Evidence is based on an original dataset that contains both experimental measures of risk taking and impatience along with anthropometric measurements of children and adults. The aim of the paper is to (i) explore the importance of risk and time preferences in explaining undernutrition and (ii) compare the evidence stemming from poor households to strikingly similar findings from industrialized countries. It uses an inter-generational approach to explain observed correlations in adults and children that is inspired by the height premium on labor markets. Parents can invest in the health capital of their child to increase future earnings and their consumption when old: better nutrition during infancy translates into better human capital and better wages, and ultimately better financial means to take care of elderly parents. However this investment is subject to considerable uncertainty, since parents neither perfectly foresee economic conditions when the child starts earning nor fully observe the ability to transform nutritional investments into long-term health capital. As a result, risk taking households have taller and heavier children. Conversely, impatience does not affect child health. In the case of adults, only weight and the body mass index (BMI), but not height, are positively and moderately correlated with risk taking and impatience.  相似文献

Abstract

Over the last fifty years the nature of the provision and financing of health services, and the composition of the foreign-born population in the USA have both evolved significantly. The rapid growth of Mexican immigration in the last fifteen years has created new challenges. Ironically, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, the sweeping legislation designed to ensure that almost all Americans can obtain health insurance, may reduce access to care for many immigrants by isolating them from the general, formerly uninsured, population. Bi-national and cross-border initiatives between the USA and Mexico along the lines of some developments in Europe are worth encouraging to help ease the current and future barriers to health care for immigrants.  相似文献

In the present study, the production of laccase (Lac) and manganese‐dependent peroxidase (MnP) by the white‐rot fungus Trametes versicolor grown in submerged cultures with different agricultural residues was investigated. The lignocellulosic materials studied were almond shells, hazelnut husks, sunflower stems, clover straw and hazelnut cobs, because they are common agricultural wastes in Turkey. Among the different lignocellulosic materials studied, hazelnut cobs provided the highest Lac and MnP activities (47.09 and 109.21 U/L, respectively). The optimum conditions were determined for Lac and MnP production in submerged cultures of T. versicolor by using hazelnut cobs as substrate. For Lac production, the optimum incubation time, hazelnut cob concentration, pH, and shaking rate were found as 4 days, 2% w/v, 6.0 and 130 rpm, respectively. For MnP production, the optimum incubation time, hazelnut cob concentration, pH and shaking rate were found as 5 days, 2% w/v, 6.0 and 90 rpm, respectively.  相似文献

Apple pomace which is the main waste of fruit juice industry was utilized to extract pectins in an environmentally friendly way, which was then compared with chemically-extracted pectins. The water-based extraction with combined physical and enzymatic treatments produced pectins with 693.2 mg g−1 galacturonic acid and 4.6% yield, which were less than those of chemically-extracted pectins. Chemically-extracted pectins exhibited lower degree of esterification (58%) than the pectin samples obtained by physical/enzymatic treatments (69%), which were also confirmed by FT-IR analysis. When subjected to steady-shear rheological conditions, both pectin solutions were shown to have shear-thinning properties. However, decreased viscosity was observed in the pectins extracted by combined physical/enzymatic methods which could be mainly attributed to the presence of more methyl esters, thus limiting polymer chain interactions. Moreover, the pectins which were extracted by combined physical/enzymatic treatments, showed less elastic properties under high shear rate conditions, compared to the chemically-extracted pectins.  相似文献

Sialic acids (SAs) are important functional sugars, and monomers of sialylated human milk oligosaccharides (sialylated HMOs or sialyllactoses), which are crucial for improving infant development and can facilitate infant brain development, maintain brain health, and enhance immunity. The most common form of SA is N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc), and the main forms of sialyllactoses are 6′-sialyllactose (6′-SL) and 3′-sialyllactose (3′-SL). As functional food additive, the demand for NeuAc and sialyllactoses will continuously increase due to their wide and important fields of application. However, NeuAc and sialyllactoses produced by traditional extraction methods are inefficient and may cause allergen contamination, and cannot keep up with the rapidly increasing market demand. Therefore, the production of NeuAc and sialyllactoses by sustainable biotechnological methods have attracted increasing attention. In particular, the development of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology techniques and strategies have promoted efficient biosynthesis of NeuAc and sialyllactoses. In this review, we first discussed the application of NeuAc and sialyllactoses. Secondly, metabolic engineering and protein engineering-fueled progress of whole-cell catalysis and de novo synthesis of NeuAc and sialyllactoses were systematically summarized and compared. Furthermore, challenges of efficient microbial production of NeuAc and sialyllactoses as well as strategies for overcoming the challenges were discussed, such as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats interference (CRISPRi)-aided identification of key precursor transport pathways, synergistically debottleneck of kinetic and thermodynamic limits in synthetic pathways, and dynamic regulation of metabolic pathways for balancing cell growth and production. We hope this review can further facilitate the understanding of limiting factors that hampered efficient production of sialic acid and sialyllactoses, as well as contribute to the development of strategies for the construction of efficient production hosts for high-level production of sialic acid and sialyllactose based on synthetic biology tools and strategies.  相似文献

Acid, alkaline and enzymatic hydrolysis of agricultural crop wastes were compared for yields of total reducing sugars with the hydrolysates being evaluated for ethanol production using a mixed culture of Zymomonas mobilis and Candida tropicalis. Acid hydrolysis of fruit and vegetable residues gave 49–84 g reducing sugars l−1 and 29–32 g ethanol l−1 was then obtained. Alkaline hydrolysis did not give significant amount of reducing sugars. Enzymatic hydrolysis of fruit and vegetable residues yielded 36–123 g reducing sugars l−1 and 11–54 g ethanol l−1.  相似文献
