Two field experiments were conducted to examine the effect of soil solarization on the survival of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and root colonization of three crops. The experiments were carried out in a loamy sand soil (Rehovot) and a silty soil (Bet She'an Valley). For both experiments, assessment of indigenous AM fungal populations by the most probable number (MPN) method indicated that populations were reduced to zero after 2 or 4 weeks of solarization treatment. However, Glomus intraradices inoculum applied to the soil prior to solarization remained viable even after 8 weeks of solarization. After soil fumigation with methyl bromide both indigenous and applied AM fungi were nondetectable. Percentage root colonization by the indigenous AM fungal populations, together with plant-growth parameters, were assessed for three crops: onion and wheat (Rehovot), and carrot (Bet She'an). When sown on solarized field plots, onion and carrot seedlings showed a plant growth retardation, whereas wheat showed an increased growth response. Root colonization by indigenous AM fungi was not evident until 6 weeks after seedling emergence. Fumigation with methyl bromide reduced root colonization by indigenous AM populations, and reduced onion and wheat plant development at early growth stages. In a laboratory experiment, a temperature of 45° C for up to 24 h did not affect AM spore viability, indicating that temperatures reached during the solarization treatment cannot solely account for the reduced AM fungi viability in the field. Apparently, soil solarization temporarily delays root colonization by indigenous AM fungi until 6-8 weeks after plant emergence.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out in a forest nursery during the summer of 1994 to examine the effect of soil solarization on ectomycorrhizal soil infectivity (ESI) and soil receptiveness to inoculation with Laccaria bicolor. Soil samples from solarized, steamed, fumigated and untreated plots were periodically collected and assayed for ESI. Untreated soil exhibited high ESI. Solarization was as effective as steaming or fumigation in reducing ESI in the uppermost layer. Solarization with a double layer of polyethylene film and fumigation were the only treatments which reduced ESI deeper in the soil. During July, the temperature of covered beds reached 50  °C at a soil depth of 5 cm. Ectomycorrhizal fungi were among the soil-borne fungi most sensitive to solar heating. Soil solarization provides an effective disinfection method for controlled mycorrhization in forest nurseries. Accepted: 10 April 1997  相似文献

Steam and soil solarization were investigated for control of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne arenaria in 2 yr of field trials on a commercial flower farm in Florida. The objective was to determine if preplant steam treatments in combination with solarization, or solarization alone effectively controlled nematodes compared to methyl bromide (MeBr). Trials were conducted in a field with naturally occurring populations of M. arenaria. Treatments were solarization alone, steam treatment after solarization using standard 7.6-cm-diameter perforated plastic drain tile (steam 1), steam treatment following solarization using custom-drilled plastic drain tile with 1.6-mm holes spaced every 3.8 cm (steam 2), and MeBr applied at 392 kg/ha 80:20 MeBr:chloropicrin. Drain tiles were buried approximately 35 cm deep with four tiles per 1.8 by 30 m plot. Steam application followed a 4-wk solarization period concluding in mid-October. All steam was generated using a Sioux propane boiler system. Plots were steamed for sufficient time to reach the target temperature of 70°C for 20 min. Solarization plastic was retained on the plots during steaming and plots were covered with a single layer of carpet padding to provide additional insulation. The floriculture crops larkspur (Delphinium elatum and Delphinium × belladonna), snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) were produced according to standard commercial practices. One month after treatment in both years of the study, soil populations of M. arenaria were lower in both steam treatments and in MeBr compared to solarization alone. At the end of the season in both years, galling on larkspur, snapdragon, and sunflowers was lower in both steam treatments than in solarization. Both steam treatments also provided control of M. arenaria in soil at the end of the season comparable to, or exceeding that provided by MeBr. Both steam treatments also reduced M. arenaria in snapdragon roots comparable to, or exceeding control with MeBr. Meloidogyne arenaria in soil increased in solarization alone. Solarization alone also had higher gall ratings on larkspur, snapdragon, and sunflower than all other treatments. Steam provided excellent control of M. arenaria in this study.  相似文献

Solarization of soil was found beneficial for plant growth in cowpea under field conditions. Root nodulation, infection by mycorrhizal fungi and yield were higher in plants grown in solarized soil. These increases were to the extent of 104.7, 20.0 and 23.7 per cent respectively when compared to control treatment without solarization.  相似文献

Exotic annual grasses are a major challenge to successful restoration in temperate and Mediterranean climates. Experiments to restore abandoned agricultural fields from exotic grassland to coastal sage scrub habitat were conducted over two years in southern California, U.S.A. Grass control methods were tested in 5 m2 plots using soil and vegetation treatments seeded with a mix of natives. The treatments compared grass‐specific herbicide, mowing, and black plastic winter solarization with disking and a control. In year two, herbicide and mowing treatments were repeated on the first‐year plots, plus new control and solarization plots were added. Treatments were evaluated using percent cover, richness and biomass of native and exotic plants. Disking alone reduced exotic grasses, but solarization was the most effective control in both years even without soil sterilization, and produced the highest cover of natives. Native richness was greatest in solarization and herbicide plots. Herbicide application reduced exotics and increased natives more than disking or mowing, but produced higher exotic forb biomass than solarization in the second year. Mowing reduced grass biomass and cover in both years, but did not improve native establishment more than disking. Solarization was the most effective restoration method, but grass‐specific herbicide may be a valuable addition or alternative. Solarization using black plastic could improve restoration in regions with cool, wet summers or winter growing seasons by managing exotic seedbanks prior to seeding. While solarization may be impractical at very large scales, it will be useful for rapid establishment of annual assemblages on small scales.  相似文献

Impacts of sustainable soil-borne pest management strategies on the soil ecosystem were compared to that of methyl bromide fumigation using nematode community analysis. A field experiment was conducted in 2003 and repeated in 2004. Soil treatments carried out in summer months included methyl bromide (MB) fumigation, solarization (S) for 6 weeks, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) cover cropping for 3 months (CP), combination of solarization and cowpea cover cropping (S + CP), and a weedy fallow throughout the summer used as a control (C). All treated plots were planted to pepper (Capsicum annuum) after the application of the treatments at the end of the summer. In general, responses of nematode communities to soil treatments were more obvious at pepper planting than at 4 months after planting. In 2003, initial population densities of bacterivores and fungivores at pepper planting followed a hypothesized pattern of MB > S > S + CP > CP > C. However, this perturbation did not persist after a cycle of vigorous growth of a pepper crop. Omnivorous nematodes were the most sensitive nematode trophic group, with impact from soil treatment lasting until the end of the pepper crop. Nematode community indices such as ratio of fungivores to fungivores plus bacterivores, richness, and structure index were especially useful in detecting impacts by the various soil treatments. While disturbance from MB on the nematode communities lasted at least until the end of the pepper crop, that from the solarization often reduced or disappeared at the end of the experiment. The CP treatment enhanced many of the beneficial nematodes but failed to suppress the final population densities of herbivorous nematodes at pepper harvest (Pf). However, CP + S consistently reduced the Pf of herbivores to levels equivalent to MB in both years, whereas, this level of suppression could not be achieved by either CP or solarization alone.  相似文献

The role of soil fungi and nematodes in citrus replant problems was investigated. Several pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi and the nematodeTylenchulus semipenetrans were isolated in about equal abundance from soils which displayed or did not display replant problems. However, in almost all trees showing evidence of decline, infection by the fungusPhytophthora citrophthora had advanced through the roots until it had reached the tree crown. Fumigation of old citrus soil with methyl bromide greatly increased the growth of sour organe. The application of Nemacure, Benomyl and Ridomil 5G confirmed the important role of pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi and nematodes in the citrus replant problem. Inoculation of methyl bromide-treated soil with the pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi separately or in combination further confirmed the previous experiments and also revealed an important role ofP. citrophthora andFusarium solani when replanting citrus in old citrus orchards.  相似文献

Fine root production and mortality in central Himalayan evergreenforests consisting of Quercus leucotrichophora (banj oak) andPinus roxburghii (chir pine) were measured. Fine root productionand mortality decreased with increasing soil depth. Annual fineroot production was higher in the broadleafed forest than inthe coniferous forest, across months and seasons (1.3 and 1.5-timesmore living and dead root biomass, respectively in banj oakthan in chir pine). Live fine root production was 2508 kg ha-1year-1inchir pine forest and 3631 kg ha-1year-1in banj oak forest. Deadfine roots accumulated at a rate of 1197 and 1525 kg ha-1year-1inchir pine and in banj oak forest, respectively. In both forests, the greatest fine root production was recorded in the rainyseason followed by summer and winter seasons. Both soil androot nitrogen concentration decreased with increasing soil depth.Nitrogen uptake was higher in banj oak forest (12.1 kg ha-1year-1)than chir pine forest (7.2 kg ha-1year-1).Copyright 1999 Annalsof Botany Company Fine root production, fine roots, necromass, banj oak, chir pine, Quercus leucotrichophora , Pinus roxburghii .  相似文献

Communities of indigenous arbusuclar mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are expected to alter phosphorus uptake and biomass productivity of plants according to characteristics of the life cycles of the fungi present and the way they interact with each other inside roots and with host plants. Differences in the relative abundance of AM fungi inside roots could influence P uptake if the fungi present differ in effectiveness at accessing P and transferring it to the plant. However, it is difficult to assess the contribution of AM fungi under field conditions. We investigated P uptake, from point sources of P placed 2, 4 and 6 cm from roots, by plants colonised by a community of AM fungi in jarrah forest soil. Roots were retained within a mesh bag to prevent them from growing towards the point source of P. The relative abundance of morphotypes of fungi inside roots and the P status of plants were assessed after 12 and 16 weeks. First, a bioassay was carried out in undisturbed forest soil cores using two host plants, a forest understorey plant Phyllanthus calycinus Labill and the annual pasture species subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneaumL.), to assess the infectivity of the indigenous community of AM fungi. Roots of both bioassay host plants were colonised in similar proportions by morphotypes of AM fungi resembling Glomus, Acaulospora, Scutellospora and fine endophytes. In this bioassay, there were positive correlations between the proportion of root length colonised and plant biomass and P uptake for P. calycinus, but not for subterranean clover. In the experiment assessing the capacity of P. calycinus to access P placed at increasing distances from the root, shoot P content and concentration in P. calycinus were greater when P was placed 2 cm compared with 4 and 6 cm from roots. The length of hyphae in the vicinity of the point source of P decreased with increasing distance from the plant. The extent to which the individual AM fungi were involved in P uptake is not known. The Glomus morphotype was dominant at both times of sampling.  相似文献

Glomus versiforme was associated in vitro with Ri-T-DNA-transformed carrot root and after 4 months of cultivation, numerous axenic arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) propagules were obtained. Three successive generations of spores and mycorrhizal root pieces were obtained by reassociating a 4-month-old root piece with a new carrot root. A biological test was conducted to assess the infectivity of the three generations of inoculum. Both for spores and mycorrhizal root pieces, a significant decrease in infectivity was observed among the successive generations. Mycorrhizal root pieces however, exhibited, higher infectivity than spores. These results show the possibility of maintaining AM fungi cultures in axenic conditions for a long time and raise questions about the loss of infectivity among the generations. The necessity of maintaining the same strains in vitro and in vivo in two separate collections is discussed. Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) are important for promoting the mineral nutrition, growth and survival of plants used to rehabilitate degraded areas. Clusia pusilla is an evergreen shrub which is tolerant of high irradiance, germinates readily and can be easily reproduced by cuttings. All these characteristics make this species useful in the recovery of deforested areas. The aim of this work was to explore the response of C. pusilla to AM in the field, in two types of soil: the shrubland soil in which the species naturally grows and in a soil of a riparian forest. Eight treatments were performed in each type of soil. The treatments consisted of a non-mycorrhizal control and mycorrhizal plants colonized by one of the three AM inocula tested in the presence or absence of triple superphosphate (150 kg ha-1). After 11 months of growth in the shrubland soil, C. pusilla seedlings showed an increase in height and dry weight in response to the fertilizer but not to mycorrhizas. In contrast, in the forest soil the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) effect was equivalent to the fertilizer effect, and the two effects interacted positively. The lack of response to AM in shrubland soil was caused by its high sand content, which hinders the retention of the inocula. Due to a higher clay content, the forest soil binds inocula more tightly than shrubland soil. In conclusion, C. pusilla appears to benefit greatly from the addition of AMF in forest soil, though it requires an additional P source for such benefits in shrubland soil. This P source must be organic so that phosphorus is not lost by leaching. Although the growth rate of this species is very low, its survival can be guaranteed with the application of AMF inocula together with P-fertilizer applied at a low rate.  相似文献

A three season study was conducted to determine the effect of added composted yard waste, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, and fertilizer on plant cover, standing crop biomass, species composition, AM fungal infectivity and spore density in coarse taconite iron ore tailing plots seeded with a mixture of native prairie grasses. Plant cover and biomass, percent seeded species, mycorrhizal infectivity and spore density were greatly increased by additions of composted yard waste. After three seasons, total plant cover was also greater in plots with added fertilizer. Third season plant cover was also greater in plots amended with the higher rate (44.8 Mg ha–1) of compost than the moderate rate (22.4 Mg ha-1). Field inoculation with AM fungi also increased plant cover during the second season and infectivity during the first two seasons. Seeded native species, consisting mostly of the cover species Elymus canadensis, dominated plot vegetation during the second and third seasons. Dispersal of AM fungal propagules into nonmycorrhizal plots occurred rapidly and increased infectivity in compost-amended plots during the third season. In plots with less than 10% plant cover, AM fungal infectivity of inoculated plots was greatly reduced after the second season. The high level of plant cover and the trend of increasing proportion of mycorrhizal-dependent warm-season grasses, along with increases in infectivity, forecast the establishment of a sustainable native grass community that will meet reclamation goals.  相似文献

Wildfires are a typical event in many Australian plant communities. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi are important for plant growth in many communities, especially on infertile soils, yet few studies have examined the impact of wildfire on the infectivity of VAM fungi. This study took the opportunity offered by a wildfire to compare the infectivity and abundance of spores of VAM fungi from: (i) pre-fire and post-fire sites, and (ii) post-fire burned and unburned sites. Pre-fire samples had been taken in May 1990 and mid-December 1990 as part of another study. A wildfire of moderate intensity burned the site in late December 1990. Post-fire samples were taken from burned and unburned areas immediately after the fire and 6 months after the fire. A bioassay was used to examine the infectivity of VAM fungi. The post-fire soil produced significantly less VAM infection than the pre-fire soil. However, no difference was observed between colonization of plant roots by VAM fungi in soil taken from post-fire burned and adjacent unburned plots. Soil samples taken 6 months after the fire produced significantly more VAM than corresponding soil samples taken one year earlier. Spore numbers were quantified be wet-sieving and decanting of 100-g, air-dried soil subsamples and microscopic examination. For the most abundant spore type, spore numbers were significantly lower immediately post-fire. However, no significant difference in spore numbers was observed between post-fire burned and unburned plots. Six months after the fire, spore numbers were the same as the corresponding samples taken 1 year earlier. All plants appearing in the burned site resprouted from underground organs. All post-fire plant species recorded to have mycorrhizal associations before the fire had the same associations after the fire, except for species of Conospermum (Proteaceae), which lacked internal vesicles in cortical cells in the post-fire samples.  相似文献

Field response of wheat to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and drought stress   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Mycorrhizal plants often have greater tolerance to drought than nonmycorrhizal plants. This study was conducted to determine the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi inoculation on growth, grain yield and mineral acquisition of two winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars grown in the field under well-watered and water-stressed conditions. Wheat seeds were planted in furrows after treatment with or without the AM fungi Glomus mosseae or G. etunicatum. Roots were sampled at four growth stages (leaf, tillering, heading and grain-filling) to quantify AM fungi. There was negligible AM fungi colonization during winter months following seeding (leaf sampling in February), when soil temperature was low. During the spring, AM fungi colonization increased gradually. Mycorrhizal colonization was higher in well-watered plants colonized with AM fungi isolates than water-stressed plants. Plants inoculated with G. etunicatum generally had higher colonization than plants colonized with G. mosseae under both soil moisture conditions. Biomass and grain yields were higher in mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plots irrespective of soil moisture, and G. etunicatum inoculated plants generally had higher biomass and grain yields than those colonized by G. mosseae under either soil moisture condition. The mycorrhizal plants had higher shoot P and Fe concentrations than nonmycorrhizal plants at all samplings regardless of soil moisture conditions. The improved growth, yield and nutrient uptake in wheat plants reported here demonstrate the potential of mycorrhizal inoculation to reduce the effects of drought stress on wheat grown under field conditions in semiarid areas of the world.  相似文献

Soil solarization is a preplanting technique used in hot climates to control weeds and soilborne pathogens consisting of mulching the soil surface with polyethylene sheets. The increase in temperature associated with solarized soil could affect nitrogen availability for grain legume crops through effects on nitrogen fixing soil microorganisms or other mechanisms. To examine the effects of solarization on natural root nodulation and nitrogen accumulation and partitioning in the plant, two solarization field experiments were carried out over two planting seasons, involving genotypes of both faba bean (Vicia faba) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum). The effect of sowing date was also studied in the first season. Solarization increased the maximum soil temperature by 9–10 °C in the first, and by 13–15 °C in the second season. At 5 cm below the solarized soil surface, a temperature of over 46 °C prevailed for 146 and 280 h over the two respective seasons, while this temperature was not attained in unmulched soil. Solarization delayed the initiation of nodulation and consistently reduced the nodule number per host plant, but generated an approximate doubling of mean nodule weight. The total nodule mass per plant was not affected by the treatment in the first season, but was reduced in the second season. Solarization significantly increased the concentrations of NO3 -N, Na+, Zn2+, Ca2+ and K+ in the soil extract, and the total nitrogen accumulated in the whole plant. This latter increase was due to both higher plant growth and a greater plant nitrogen concentration. The increased nitrogen level in the plant was not uniform with respect to plant component, varying from 57% in the roots to 198% in the pods and seeds. The plants grown in non-solarized soil accumulated about 31% of their total N content in the shoots of the parasitic weed Orobanche crenata. Solarization dramatically improved grain yield by 300–900% in both seasons and in all genotypes studied, due to increased N availability in soil, N accumulation in plants, improved plant growth, and complete control of the parasite weed O. crenata. On the basis of these beneficial effects, soil solarization, which avoids site contamination and is suited to organic farming, should be a good opportunity in Mediterranean areas where the level and stability of grain yields are low, and the infestation of O. crenata is high.  相似文献

Six species of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (Glomus aggregatum, G. clarum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices, G. mosseae and G. versiforme) were evaluated, in three greenhouse experiments, for their effects on reproduction of the root-lesion nematode, Pratylenchus penetrans, and growth of Ottawa 3 apple rootstock. Glomus mosseae increased total dry weights of nematode-inoculated and non-inoculated rootstock in all three greenhouse experiments, and G. intraradices increased dry weights in two of three greenhouse experiments. Plants inoculated with G. mosseae generally supported fewer P. penetrans per gram of root than plants inoculated with other AM fungi, but did not differ significantly from the controls in any greenhouse experiment. Colonization of roots by AM fungi was reduced by P. penetrans at initial inoculum densities greater than 250 nematodes/L soil. In field trials, preplant inoculation with either G. intraradices or G. mosseae increased rootstock growth and leaf concentrations of P, Mg, Zn and Cu in fumigated plots but not in non-fumigated plots, indicating that colonization by native AM fungi in non-fumigated plots may have been sufficient for adequate nutrient acquisition. The abundance of vesicles and arbuscules was greater in roots of plants inoculated with AM fungi before planting than in roots of non-inoculated plants, in both fumigated and non-fumigated plots. P. penetrans per gram of root and per 50 ml soil were significantly lower for G. mosseae- inoculated plants than for non-inoculated plants in fumigated soil but not in non-fumigated soil.  相似文献

Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are communities of soil organisms often targeted to assist in the achievement of multiple ecological restoration goals. In drylands, benefits conferred from biocrust and AM fungal inoculation, such as improved native plant establishment and soil stabilization, have primarily been studied separately. However, comparisons between these two types of soil inoculants and investigations into potential synergies between them, particularly at the plant community scale, are needed to inform on‐the‐ground management practices in drylands. We conducted two full‐factorial experiments—one in greenhouse mesocosms and one in field plots—to test the effects of AM fungal inoculation, biocrust inoculation, and their interaction on multiple measures of dryland restoration success. Biocrust inoculation promoted soil stabilization and plant drought tolerance, but had mixed effects on native plant diversity (positive in greenhouse, neutral in field) and productivity (negative in greenhouse, neutral in field). In greenhouse mesocosms, biocrust inoculation reduced plant biomass, which was antagonistic to % root length colonized by AM fungi. Inoculation with native or commercial AM fungi did not influence plant establishment, drought tolerance, or soil stabilization in either study, and few synergistic effects of simultaneous inoculation of AM fungi and biocrusts were observed. These results suggest that, depending on the condition of existing soil communities, inoculation with AM fungi may not be necessary to promote dryland restoration goals, while inoculation with salvaged biocrust inoculation may be beneficial in some contexts.  相似文献
