Growth of the rat facial skeleton over a 40 day period from birth was examined relative to 8 length and 4 width parameters of animals subject to somatic growth retardation experimentally induced by overtaxing the maternal lactational capacity by means of excessively large cross-fostered litters. Least squares regression lines were calculated for the preweaning period (day 1-20); the postweaning period (day 21-40) and the total period (day 1-40), thereafter being recalculated into segmented regression lines relative to the physiological growth phases. Specific phases of growth activity were noted throughout the 40 days with those in the preweaning period showing a marked consistency concomitant with the maternal lactational ability and subsequent emergence of biological weaning. A consistent phasic growth spectrum with definitive breaks in continuity supports the original postulate (Brody, 1927) that growth curves consist of phases of exponential activity delineated by changes in growth rate. Due to the inclusion of both control and experimental samples, the breakage points of the phases marking the change of growth rate different and were therefore reciprocated by alterations of phasic duration. Phasic growth occurred in the postweaning period with some degree of variance which did not permit an assessment of the causation factors with sufficient validity. The postweaning period of the experimental sample exhibited varying degrees of growth recovery (catch-up) in the majority of the facial parameters. Covariance analysis of the parameters in most instances showed that the parameters, as defined, and the bone units incorporated within them manifested a characteristic growth response in each sample irrespective of the modifying influence of the environmental factors.  相似文献

An assessment of the growth rate pattern based on longitudinal weight data of guinea pigs was conducted over the presumptive preweaning and early postweaning period. The study covered the minimum of 44 and maximum of 53 days with means calculated for 3-day intervals involving 13 litters and a total of 40 young. Initial analysis showed males heavier than females at birth and both sexes being inversely proportional to litter size at birth. At the end of the experimental period the males were still heavier than the females but their weight distribution peaked in litter of three while the females were heaviest in the largest litters of five and lightest in the litter of one. Phasic linear regression line analysis revealed 4 litters with a triphasic growth outline and 6 litters with quadrophasic growth outline. Final assessments indicate that the total period of 53 days manifests a quadrophasic growth outline while, in contrast, the period specifically involved with the process of lactation and weaning displays a definite diphasic growth spectrum and is comparable to the tri- or quadrophasic spectrum occurring in the albino rats, rice rats and hamsters.  相似文献

The effects of several environmental factors on the postweaning growth of wild Alpine marmots were investigated. Factors considered were year of birth, sun exposure in the home range, litter size, and sex of young. Components of growth were juvenile mass at emergence from the natal burrow (as a result of preweaning growth) and postweaning growth rate. We also considered the length of the active season during which growth occurs. Mass at emergence and postweaning growth rate varied according to year of birth, were higher in south-facing than in north-facing home ranges, and were higher in small litters. Mass at emergence was higher for males than for females. We suggest that environmental factors affected the juvenile growth pattern through influences on maternal body condition. Our results support Trombulak's hypothesis that mothers maintain as many young as physiologically possible. We suggest that mothers in poor condition sacrificed the mass of their offspring rather than their number. A body mass sexual dimorphism of juveniles occurred at emergence, suggesting that mothers may provide more care for their male than their female offspring. An assessment of the growth rate spectrum based on a longitudinal weight study of golden hamsters was undertaken over the preweaning period. The period covered 23 days with data probes at 24-hourly intervals and encompassed 16 litters providing a birth number of 120 young and a weaning survival number of 82. Subsequent analysis directed initially at the pooled or averaged data showed sex differences with males gaining weight faster than females. Further analysis showed the total period to have three definitive break-points and therefore four phases of growth activity. The segmented linear regression line calculations showed that the phasic duration of males in the second and third phases were two days later than the females. Following data-analysis adjustments and taken into account aberrations of the sample, final indications pointed to the preweaning hamster growth spectrum as quadrophasic, exhibiting a stable first phase, a second and third phase terminating earlier in females and a final weaning weight being heavier in males. The growth curves demonstrated a 'U' shaped outline and formed an integral part of hamster preweaning precocity.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to measure milk yield as a correlated response to selection for increased 12-day litter weight (maternal lines) for 13 generations and increased and decreased body weight gain from 21 to 42 days of age (postweaning gain lines) for 12 to 14 generations. Milk yield was measured from day 6 to day 21 of lactation by separating litters from their dams for 6 h, then weighing litters before and after a 1.5 h suckling period. Average total milk production was 30.3 +/- 0.9 g and 28.6 +/- 1.1 g in maternal and control lines, respectively. This difference was not significant (P greater than 0.05). Differences among gain lines were significant (P less than 0.01) in the second experiment with average production of 44.1 +/- 1.4 g for increased gain lines, 22.5 +/- 0.9 g for the decreased gain line and 31.2 +/- 1.0 g for the control. These results indicated that response to selection for increased 12-day litter weight was not associated with increases in milk yield, but sizable changes inmilk yield accompanied bi-directional selection for early postweaning gain.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the potential developmental differences resulting from treating neonatal rat pups in either split-litter or whole-litter (nested) experimental designs. We directly compared rat pups dosed with triethyl lead (TEL) via both split-litter (representing all dosage groups within a single litter) and nested (all pups randomly assigned to a single litter receive the same dose) designs. The nested design was chosen to produce a uniform behavioral pattern across pups within each litter, whereas the split-litter design was chosen to promote pup competition and differential maternal care. On postpartum day 5, pups were administered either 12, 13, 14, or 15 mg/kg TEL, with each design represented by 12 litters. Although the LD50 values for the two designs were not significantly different, there were significantly more deaths in the 12 mg/kg dosage group within the split-litter design than in the nested design group. Preweaning survival times for split-litter dosed animals were also decreased. In addition, significant growth reduction (7-16%) was observed in the split-litter group, relative to the nested design animals during the preweaning period. These results suggest that neonatal toxicity is not independent from experimental design considerations, and that the factors of littermate competition and/or pup-induced maternal care deserve further study.  相似文献

通过室内培养,研究了杨树和江南桤木落叶混合分解过程中两种落叶的混合比例及落叶添加方式对土壤微生物生物量的影响.结果表明:落叶混合比例对土壤微生物生物量碳(MBC)、氮(MBN)均有显著的影响.培养30 d,江南桤木落叶比例为50%以上的土壤MBC和MBN显著高于纯杨树落叶处理及对照;75 d时,江南桤木落叶比例≥40%的土壤MBC和≥30%的土壤MBN均显著高于纯杨树落叶处理及对照;135 d后,江南桤木落叶比例≥20%的土壤MBC和≥40%的土壤MBN均显著高于纯杨树落叶处理及对照.不同混合比例的土壤MBC/MBN无显著差异,总体呈前期增长后期下降的变化趋势.杨树和江南桤木落叶混合分解对土壤MBC和MBN有显著的协同促进作用.在整个培养过程中,落叶添加方式对土壤MBC、MBN和MBC/MBN无显著影响.  相似文献

A study was performed to investigate the effect of weaning at 4 weeks of age on the activity of digestive enzymes in the stomach and pancreatic tissue and in digesta from 3 days prior to weaning to 9 days postweaning in 64 piglets. In stomach tissue the activity of pepsin and gastric lipase was determined. Pepsin activity declined abruptly after weaning but 5 days postweaning the weaning level was regained and in the gastric contents no change in pepsin activity was observed. Weaning did not influence the activity of gastric lipase. The activity of eight enzymes and a cofactor was measured in pancreatic tissue. The effect of weaning on the enzyme activity was highly significant for all enzymes except elastase. The activity of all enzymes remained at the weaning level during day 1–2 postweaning followed by a reduction of the activity. The activity of trypsin, carboxypeptidase A, amylase and lipase exhibited minimum activity 5 days postweaning. Trypsin activity increased to the preweaning level on day 7–9 whereas the activity of the others increased but did not reach the preweaning level. The activity of chymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase B and carboxyl ester hydrolase decreased during the entire experimental period. In digesta no effect of weaning was observed on the activity of amylase and trypsin. The activity of chymotrypsin was reduced after weaning in the proximal third of the small intestine and lipase and carboxyl ester hydrolase activity was reduced in the middle and distal parts of the small intestine after weaning. The present study shows that the activities of the digestive enzymes in the pancreatic tissue are affected by weaning. Even though the pancreatic secretion cannot be judged from these results they show that the enzymes respond differently to weaning. In general the activity of the digestive enzymes in pancreatic tissue is low on day 5 postweaning which in interaction with other factors may increase the risk of developing postweaning diarrhoea.  相似文献

Individuals show stable differences in their aggressive responses towards unfamiliar conspecifics. We investigated the extent to which variables present during early life could be identified that were correlated with these later individual differences in aggressive behaviour. The behaviour and growth of 125 domestic pigs, Sus scrofa, from 16 litters, were studied from birth until 18 days after weaning, when they were tested on two occasions in resident-intruder tests to measure their aggressiveness. Aggressiveness was affected by litter, although not by sex. A number of early life correlates of later resident-intruder aggressiveness were found at the litter level. Pigs became more aggressive if they had been born into larger litters. Pigs in these aggressive litters were more active in the 8-h period immediately after birth, perhaps taking longer to achieve satiety at the udder. They were also in poorer condition 2 days after birth. Aggressive pigs also engaged in more pushing with littermates over the whole preweaning period. The best correlates of aggressiveness appear to be a number of correlated variables relating to low nutrition, either prenatally or in the early postnatal period. The results are consistent with the concept that early environmental conditions can programme behavioural responses for later life.  相似文献

Birth weight and the neonatal growth rate are reliable indicators of neonatal survival prospects. Data on weight at birth and consecutive weights until 40 days of age were recorded for cheetah cubs in 16 litters. Growth was found to be linear during the first 40 days of life. Weight data were used to evaluate the influence of several factors on birth weight and neonatal growth. The factors used in these analyses were sex, litter identity, litter size, average litter size over the first 40 days, birth weight, parents, gestation length, parity of the dam, and inbreeding. For birth weight and neonatal growth, litter identity was the major explanatory factor (81.8 and 85.3%). For birth weight, a significant influence of gestation length was found (p < 0.05), whereas inbreeding coefficient tended to decrease the birth weight (p = 0.09). Together, gestation length and inbreeding coefficient account for 57.5% of the between‐litter variation for birth weight. Factors with significant influences on neonatal growth are gestation length and parity (p < 0.05). The average litter size over the first 40 days tended to influence neonatal growth (p = 0.07). These three variables together account for 99.9% of the between‐litter variation for neonatal growth during the first 40 days of life. A comparison of neonatal growth between mother‐raised and hand‐raised cubs revealed a lower growth rate in hand‐raised cubs (45 vs. 27 g/day). Intraspecific variation in the maximum shell length of Pisidium is small in comparison with variation in the life span of the clams, from 4 mo to 4 yr. The use of shell length as a measure of size is complicated by large intraspecific variation in the weight-length relationship, a possible reflection of resource availability on the weight of the soft parts. Maximum embryo length is relatively constant (1 mm) in the majority of species but litter size is variable (1 to 40), generally increasing with parent size. The time of egg-laying is determined by the size of the clam, season, and previous episode of reproduction, while the timing of the release of embryos, depending also on embryonic growth rate, is additionally affected by temperature and oxygen conditions. In brief, the maximum adult and embryo lengths are relatively conservative traits while growth rates vary by an order of magnitude.
Reproductive effort, when measured by the ratio of litter weight to parent weight, may increase or decrease with parent length and age. Both semelparous and iteroparous populations are known in several species. We suggest that if maximum adult length can be reached by the first reproductive season (in a favourable environment) the population is semelparous, otherwise (in an unfavourable environment) the population is iteroparous. Gravid clams in semelparous populations continue to grow, and thus assimilation cannot be meaningfully partitioned into reproduction, somatic growth and maintenance.
Along a depth gradient from 8 to 65 m, maximum and mature shell lengths, embryo length and litter size varies significantly in Pisidium conventus subpopulations not distinguishable electrophoretically. Large clams in deep water produce large embryos but small litters, which is contrary to the general trend of increasing litter size with parent length. Low food availability that decreases juvenile growth rate may restrict litter size in this case.  相似文献

In European ground squirrels Spermophilus citellus as in many ground squirrel species. late born litters are composed of fewer young than early born litters. Two alternative though not mutually exclusive hypotheses may explain this seasonal pattern of change in litter size. On the one hand. the production of few large young late in the season may be an adaptation to time limitations on the offspring. that have to complete growth and fattening prior to hibernation. Then one would expect a trade-off between offspring number and size as the breeding season progresses. At its extreme. this hypothesis would predict that total maternal effort should be equal independent of litter size. Alternatively. litter size may be determined by physiological limitations on the mother. in that highly constrained mothers breed later and produce smaller litters. Then one would expect reduced overall maternal effort in highly constrained mothers of smaller litters. In this case. a trade-off between litter size and offspring size would not be expected. We found that total maternal effort in terms of gestation length and the duration of lactation increased with increasing litter size. thus supporting the second hypothesis. Lactation was not terminated at natal emergence. It extended a relatively long period of time beyond the time of first litter emergence depending on litter size. During prolonged lactation. individual young of large litters made up body mass to young of small litters. As a consequence. juvenile weaning body mass was unaffected by litter size although offspring body mass at natal emergence was inversely related to litter size. This additional weight gain in young of large litters compensated for initial survival disadvantages and presumably affected fecundity at yearling age.  相似文献

The comparison of the effects of all forage offering methods would be particularly useful information in modeling growth performance and rumen fermentation of dairy calves. Therefore, this study attempted to evaluate the effects of methods of oat hay provision on growth performance, rumen fermentation and biochemical blood indices of dairy calves during preweaning and postweaning periods. At birth, 40 female Polish Holstein-Friesian calves (3 days of age; 39.6 ± 0.39 kg BW) were randomly assigned to four treatment groups differing in the access to chopped oat hay: CON (control, starter without oat hay), OH (starter feed containing 10% DM basis oat hay), OH-FC (starter feed containing 10% DM basis oat hay and oat hay fed as free-choice provision in different buckets) and FC (starter feed and oat hay fed as free-choice provision in different buckets). The calves were weaned on day 56, and then the study continued until day 84. Intakes of starter feed and oat hay were recorded daily, whereas BW and hip height (HH) on day 3 and then every 14 days. Samples of blood were collected on the initiation of experiment and then every 14 days, and rumen contents on day 28, 56 and 84. No treatment effects were found for starter, starch, CP, total DM intake, average daily gain, feeding efficiency, change in HH, ruminal fluid pH, concentrations of ruminal propionate and NH3-N, concentrations of urea nitrogen and non-esterified fatty acids in the blood. There were differences between treatments in terms of ruminal total volatile fatty acids and molar concentrations of acetate, butyrate and acetate to propionate ratio; highest in OH and OH-FC groups, especially during the postweaning period. On the other hand, lower concentrations of iso-valerate were found in OH and OH-FC groups on day 56 and 84. The concentrations of IGF-I throughout the experiment and β-hydroxybutyrate during the postweaning period in the blood were influenced by treatment, with the greatest values observed in OH and OH-FC calves. Results of this study indicate that starter feed containing chopped oat hay improves rumen fermentation parameters, which might allow successful transition from preruminant to mature ruminant state. Also, providing chopped oat hay with pelleted starter feed seems to be a better method than free-choice supplementation.  相似文献

The effects of a marine oil-based n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (mLCPUFA) supplement fed to the sow from weaning, through the rebreeding period, during gestation and until end of lactation on litter characteristics from birth until weaning were studied in sows with known litter birth weight phenotypes. It was hypothesized that low birth weight (LBW) litters would benefit more from mLCPUFA supplementation than high birth weight litters. A total of 163 sows (mean parity=4.9±0.9) were rebred after weaning. Sows were pair-matched by parity and litter average birth weight of the previous three litters. Within pairs, sows were allocated to be fed either standard corn/soyabean meal-based gestation and lactation diets (CON), or the same diets enriched with 0.5% of the mLCPUFA supplement at the expense of corn. Each litter between 9 and 16 total pigs born was classified as LBW or medium/high average birth weight (MHBW) litter and there was a significant correlation (P<0.001) between litter average birth weight of the current and previous litters within sows (r=0.49). Sow serum was harvested at day 113 of gestation for determination of immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations. The number of pigs born total and alive were lower (P=0.01) in mLCPUFA than CON sows, whereas the number of stillborn and mummified pigs were similar between treatments. Number of stillborns (trend) and mummies (P<0.01) were higher in LBW than MHBW litters. Tissue weights and brain : tissue weight ratios were similar between treatments, but LBW litters had decreased tissue weights and increased brain : tissue weight ratios compared with MHBW litters. Placental weight was lower (P=0.01) in LBW than MHBW litters, but was not different between treatments. Average and total litter weight at day 1 was similar between treatments. mLCPUFA increased weaning weight (P=0.08) and average daily gain (P<0.05) in MHBW litters, but not in LBW litters. Pre-weaning mortality was similar between treatments, but was higher (P<0.01) in LBW than MHBW litters. IgG concentration in sow serum was similar between treatments and litter birth weight categories. In conclusion, litter birth weight phenotype was repeatable within sows and LBW litters showed the benchmarks of intra-uterine growth retardation (lower placental weight and brain sparing effects). As maternal mLCPUFA supplementation decreased litter size overall, only improved litter growth rate until weaning in MHBW litters, and did not affect pre-weaning mortality, maternal mLCPUFA supplementation was not an effective strategy in our study for mitigating negative effects of a LBW litter phenotype.  相似文献

Since both living in an enriched environment and physical activity stimulate hippocampal neurogenesis in adult mice, we endeavored to examine whether preweaning enrichment, a sensory enrichment paradigm with very limited physical activity, had similar effects on neurogenesis later in life. Mice were removed from the dams for periods of increasing length from postnatal day 7 to 21, and exposed to a variety of sensory stimuli. At the age of 4 months, significant differences could be found between previously enriched and non-enriched animals when spontaneous activity was monitored. Enriched mice moved longer distances, and spent more time in a defined center zone of the open field. Adult neurogenesis was examined by labeling proliferating cells in the dentate gyrus with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). Cell proliferation, survival of the newborn cells, and net neurogenesis were similar in both groups. Volumetric measurements and stereological assessment of total granule cell counts revealed no difference in size of the dentate gyrus between both groups. Thus, in contrast to postweaning enrichment, preweaning enrichment had no lasting measurable effect on adult neurogenesis. One of the parameters responsible for this effect might be the lack of physical activity in preweaning enrichment. As physical activity is an integral part of postweaning enrichment, it might be a necessary factor to elicit a neurogenic response to environmental stimuli. The result could also imply that baseline adult hippocampal neurogenesis is independent of the changes induced by preweaning enrichment and might not contribute to the sustained types of plasticity seen in enriched animals.  相似文献

As part of an interdisciplinary research project, we studied the performance response of sows and their litters to the probiotic strain Bacillus cereus var. toyoi as well as feces consistency of piglets. Gestating sows (n=26) were randomly allotted into two groups. The probiotic B. cereus var. toyoi was administered by dietary supplementation to one group of sows and their respective litters (probiotic group) whereas the second group (control group) received no probiotic supplementation. The duration of the application was nearly 17 weeks for sows (day 90 ante partum until day 28 post partum) and six weeks for piglets (day 15-56). Piglets were weaned after 28 days. Body weight and feed consumption were recorded weekly and fecal consistency of weaned piglets was studied daily. B. cereus var. toyoi was recovered from feces of sows and piglets as well as from digesta of piglets in the probiotic group, while being absent from all samples of control animals. In addition, the probiotic was detected in piglet feces and digesta before pre-starter feed was offered, indicating a second route of uptake besides diet. Sows of the probiotic group nursed numerically more piglets and supported a higher sum of total nursing days of all piglets within each litter than control sows (p = 0.04). In turn, body weight (BW) up to day 35 was greater for control piglets (p < 0.01), while average daily gain and gain to feed ratio (G:F) in weeks six and eight postweaning was higher in the probiotic group (p < 0.05). The overall G:F of the total postweaning period was 680 g/kg and 628 g/kg in the probiotic group and control group, respectively (p = 0.009). During the trial a high prevalence of liquid feces with its maximum in the second week after weaning was observed. Probiotic supplementation led to a reduction in the incidence of liquid feces and postweaning diarrhea by 38% and 59%, respectively (p < 0.001).  相似文献

Summary Mice were sampled from a line selected for increased postweaning weight gain from three to six weeks and from a randombred control line originating from the same base population. Body weights were recorded at each of 14 ages from day 5 to day 98. The Richards and logistic growth functions were fitted to the growth trajectories of each individual mouse by a generalized non-linear least squares procedure. Estimated growth parameters (asymptotic weight, rate, shape of curve, age and weight at inflection, mean absolute growth rate and mean relative growth rate) were computed for each individual. The effects of line, litter within line, sex and line × sex interactions on these estimated parameters were then studied.Both the Richards and logistic functions fitted the data equally well and the plotted trajectories coincided over most of the growth curve. There was excellent agreement between the estimates of asymptotic weight and both age and weight at inflection based on the different functions. However, both functions apparently underestimated the asymptotic weight.Analyses of the line differences showed that selection for postweaning gain increased the mean absolute growth rate over the entire curve but had no effect on the relative growth rate or the shape of the growth curve. Five male and 9 female house musk shrews (Suncus murinus) captured in Koralawella, Sri Lanka were acquired by our laboratory. One male and 3 females alone contributed to the development of a new laboratory line (SRI line). The SRI line has been maintained as a closed breeding colony consisting of more than 40 shrews. Gestation period and litter size at birth averaged 31.2 days (43 cases) and 2.4 (43 litters), respectively. The SRI line shrews were uniformly covered with light gray fur. The body weight and total length of adult shrews averaged 72.9 g and 23.9 cm in males, and 49.6 g and 21.0 cm in females. These data indicate a body size intermediate between BAN line shrews originating from Bangladesh and Nag or OKI line shrews from Japan. Early life nutrition impacts on subsequent risk of obesity and hypertension. Several brain chemicals responsible for both feeding and cardiovascular regulation are altered in obesity. We examined effects of early postnatal overnutrition on blood pressure, brain neuropeptide Y (NPY), and adiposity markers. Rat pup litters were adjusted to either 3 or 12 male animals (overnutrition and control, respectively) on day 1 of life. After weaning, rats were given either a palatable high-fat diet or standard chow. Smaller litter pups were significantly heavier by 17 days of age. By 16 wk, the effect of litter size was masked by that of diet, postweaning. Small and normal litter animals fed a high-fat diet had similar increases in body weight, plasma insulin, leptin, and adiponectin concentrations, leptin mRNA, and fat masses relative to chow-fed animals. An increase in 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-1 mRNA in white adipose tissue, and a decrease in uncoupling protein-1 mRNA in brown adipose tissue in both small litter groups at 16 wk of age, may represent a programming effect of the altered litter size. NPY concentration in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus was reduced in high fat-fed groups. Blood pressure was significantly elevated at 13 wk in high-fat-fed animals. This study demonstrates that overnourishment during early postnatal development leads to profound changes in body weight at weaning, which tended to abate with maturation. Thus the effects of long-term dietary intervention postweaning can override those of litter size-induced obesity.  相似文献
