SUMMARY

A limited amount of research has been carried out on the four coastal lakes in the Richards Bay area. Due to the impending threat of water pollution from industrial, mining and residential areas within the catchments of these lakes there is an urgent need for the collection of baseline data before it is too late.

This paper reports on preliminary observations on Macrocrustacea of the lakes. A total of 27 species were recorded, of which 8 are new distribution records for the species in fresh water and one, an isopod, is a species new to science from a family previously unrecorded on the African continent. Sixteen of the Macrocrustacea recorded were found to be relict estuarine species.

The relationship between the Macrocrustacea are discussed in terms of habitat and dietary associations. The former category was found to be variable in the shallower Richards Bay lakes as opposed to Lake Sibaya whose depth (40 m) plays an important role in species distribution. Information is provided on habitat, substrata preference, associations with plant communities, and known depth distribution. Dietary data on the Macrocrustacea present in the four coastal lakes showed that seven major feeding groups are present: benthic filter feeders, nektonic filter feeders, periphyton grazers, shredders of dead macrophytes, benthic scavengers, partial carnivores and fish ectoparasites.  相似文献

Synopsis The distribution of Sarotherodon mossambicus in south east African estuaries is reviewed. It occurs commonly in closed estuaries and coastal lakes but is absent from open tidal estuaries. When a closed estuary opens to the sea the species usually retreats to the upper reaches. It is euryhaline and eurythermal and can feed on a wide variety of foods but experiments indicate that S. mossambicus avoids areas where current speeds exceed 370 m h–1. It is concluded that the distribution of S. mossambicus in estuarine systems is governed by an interplay of the following factors: salinity stability, water currents, suitable breeding sites, presence of marginal vegetation, marine competitors and marine piscivorous fish.  相似文献

Acanthopagrus butcheri completes its entire life history within estuaries and coastal lakes of southern Australia, although adults occasionally move between estuaries via the sea. Consequently, it is expected that populations of A. butcheri in different estuaries will be genetically distinct, with the magnitude of genetic divergence increasing with geographic isolation. However, previous genetic studies of A. butcheri from southeast Australia yielded conflicting results; allozyme variation exhibited minimal spatial structuring (θ = 0.012), whereas mitochondrial DNA distinguished the majority of populations analyzed (θ = 0.263) and genetic divergence was positively correlated with geographic isolation. This discrepancy could reflect high male gene flow, which impacts nuclear but not mitochondrial markers. Here we estimated allele frequencies at five nuclear microsatellite loci across 11 southeast Australian populations (595 individuals). Overall structuring of microsatellite variation was weaker (θ = 0.088) than that observed for mitochondrial DNA, but was able to distinguish a greater number of populations and was positively correlated with geographic distance. Therefore, we reject high male gene flow and invoke a stepping-stone model of infrequent gene flow among estuaries for both sexes. Likewise, management of A. butcheri within the study range should be conducted at the scale of individual or geographically proximate estuaries for both sexes. The lack of allozyme structuring in southeast Australia reflects either the large variance in structuring expected among loci under neutral conditions and the low number of allozymes surveyed or a recent colonization of estuaries such that some but not all nuclear loci have approached migration-drift equilibrium.  相似文献

Synopsis JuvenileTilapia mossambica Peters (2.5–10.0 cm standard length) in Lake Sibaya, South Africa, move daily from deep offshore waters to shallow (<0.5 m) littoral areas where they feed for several hours and then return to deep water. The timing of these movements varies in response to changing physical and biological features of the littoral environment. During this study (December 1973 – February 1976), lake level rose more than 1 m. At the start of the study, littoral areas visited by juvenileT. mossambica were free of vegetation and debris, but at higher lake levels trees and brush from the eroding shoreline were common in nearshore littoral waters. When the littoral zone was free of debris, juvenileT. mossambica visited nearshore waters only during daylight hours. After a 0.65 m rise in lake level and considerable accumulation of debris, these fish were abundant in the littoral zone only at night. This reversal can be attributed to efforts by juvenileT. mossambica to avoid their principal predator, the catfishClarias gariepinus. At low lake levelC. gariepinus ventured into the littoral only at night but at higher lake levels this predator was found within flooded vegetation during the day. When further increases in lake level flooded marginal grasslands, juvenileT. mossambica abandoned the littoral zone in favor of this newly created eulittoral habitat where potential fish predators did not occur. With the change in habitat, the diet changed from benthic detrital aggregate to periphyton. These observations suggest the importance of behavioral and throphic plasticity in the ability of tilapia to utilize unstable habitats.  相似文献

At oxygen concentrations below air saturation, R.Q. and A.Q. values of Tilapia mossambica increase with decrease in ambient oxygen at 30 and 35°C, indicating an increase in anaerobic metabolism and protein utilization. The recovery metabolism indicates that T. mossambica accumulates an oxygen debt at 30°C, which was not obvious at 35°C. The post-hypoxic oxygen consumption at 30°C is quite pronounced and the fish repays almost wholly the oxygen debt accumulated. At 30°C, R.Q. and A.Q. reach prehypoxic level immediately after exposure to high oxygenated water. In contrast to this, during recovery the first high R.Q. which is higher than unity and subsequent low R.Qs., almost as low as 0.5, suggest respectively that, anaerobic energy utilization persists and carbon dioxide is retained. The differences in the recovery metabolism of T. mossambica at the two temperatures may be due to changes in metabolism and pathways due to temperature. The recovery metabolism of T. mossambica suggests that energy derived anaerobically could proceed through other pathways than the conventional glycolytic way. New and published data have been collated for the biology and distribution of atherinid species abundant in the coastal saline waters of Australia below 30°S. This information has been used to determine whether these species typically spawn at sea or pass through the whole of their life cycle in estuaries, and in one case, also lagoons and saline lakes. Length-frequency data, gonadosomatic indices and distribution records indicate that in south-eastern AustraliaCraterocephalus honoriae andAtherinosoma microstoma typically reach total lengths less than 90 mm, have a one-year life cycle and breed within estuaries. This parallels the situation recently described forAtherinosoma elongata, Atherinosoma wallacei andAllanetta mugiloides in south-western Australia (Princeet al., 1982a; Prince & Potter, 1983). The marine speciesAtherinosoma presbyteroides, which reaches a similar size and has a one year life cycle in both south-western and south-eastern mainland Australia, only enters estuaries in large numbers in the former region. WhileAtherinomorus ogilbyi is also found in estuaries and typically breeds at sea, it reaches total lengths as great as 189 mm and has a longer life thanA. presbyteroides. The limited data forAtherinason esox andAtherinason hepsetoides demonstrate that both these marine atherinids can attain total lengths of 139 and 108 mm respectively and live for longer than a year but do not enter estuaries in large numbers. The latter species is unique amongst southern Australian atherinids in having a distribution which extends into deeper water. It is suggested that landlocking may have played a role in the evolution and success of the estuarine mode of lifesensu stricto ofA. wallacei, A. elongata, A. microstoma, A. honoriae andA. mugiloides in southern Australian waters.  相似文献

Background

Estuaries and coastal lakes receive little attention despite being heavily invaded by non-indigenous invasive species (NIS). In these situations, studies of population dynamics in invaded habitats can provide valuable insights into how NIS interact with new environments. Tarebia granifera is a prosobranch gastropod from south-east Asia which has invaded other sub-tropical parts of the world. This study addresses whether a small number of key environmental factors influences gastropod communities, and specifically how the population density and size structure of T. granifera were influenced by environmental change in estuaries and coastal lakes in southern Africa.

Methodology/Principal Findings

T. granifera''s density, number of brooded juveniles and size structure were measured at the St. Lucia Estuary, Mgobozeleni Estuary, Lake Sibaya and Lake Nhlange. Size structure was classified according to shell height (SH). All dissected individuals were found to be female and free from trematode infection. Salinity, water depth, temperature, and pH were the main factors correlated with population density of gastropod communities. T. granifera often reached densities well over 1000 ind. m−2, displacing indigenous gastropods and becoming a dominant component of the benthic community. T. granifera successfully invaded estuaries despite frequent exposure to high salinity and desiccation, which could together eliminate >97% of the population. The persistence of T. granifera was ensured due to its high fecundity and the environmental tolerance of large adults (20–30 mm SH) which carried an average of 158±12.8 SD brooded juveniles. Repeat introductions were not essential for the success of this parthenogenetic NIS.

Conclusion/Significance

There is a need for a broader study on the reproductive biology of T. granifera (including the previously overlooked “brood pouch ecology”), which affects population dynamics and may be relevant to other parthenogenetic NIS, such as Melanoides tuberculata and Potamopyrgus antipodarum.  相似文献

The Holocene evolution of eight South African coastal lakes and lagoons is examined and related to changes in fish composition over that period. Historical and current connectivity with riverine and marine environments are the primary determinants of present‐day fish assemblages in these systems. A small and remarkably consistent group of relict estuarine species have persisted in these coastal lakes and lagoons. The loss or reduction of connectivity with the sea has impacted on the diversity of marine fishes in all eight study systems, with no marine fishes occurring in those water bodies where connectivity has been completely broken (e.g. Sibaya, Groenvlei). In systems that have retained tenuous linkages with the sea (e.g., Verlorenvlei, Wilderness lakes), elements of the marine fish assemblage have persisted, especially the presence of facultative catadromous species. Freshwater fish diversity in coastal lakes and lagoons is a function of historical and present biogeography and salinity. From a freshwater biogeography perspective, the inflowing rivers of the four temperate systems reviewed here contain three or fewer native freshwater fishes, while the subtropical lakes that are fed by river systems contain up to 40 freshwater fish species. Thus, the significantly higher fish species diversity in subtropical versus temperate coastal lakes and lagoons comes as no surprise. Fish species diversity has been increased further in some systems (e.g., Groenvlei) by alien fish introductions. However, the impacts of fish introductions and translocations have not been studied in the coastal lakes and lagoons of South Africa. In these closed systems, it is probable that predation impacts on small estuarine fishes are significant. The recent alien fish introductions is an example of the growing threats to these systems during the Anthropocene, a period when human activities have had significant negative impacts and show potential to match the changes recorded during the entire Holocene.  相似文献

The broad-snouted caiman Caiman latirostris, of South America mostly frequents freshwater but occurs also in estuaries. Nothing of substance is known of its osmoregulatory physiology but, in the light of accumulating evidence that alligatorids lack specialised adaptations for life in hyperosmotic waters, we anticipated its physiology would be more similar to that of Alligator mississippiensis than the euryhaline Crocodylus porosus, which has both lingual salt glands and a more complex renal:cloacal system. This proved to be the case. Caiman captured in estuaries of the Ilha do Cardoso in southern Brazil were effective hypo-osmotic osmoregulators in salinities of 0–24 ppt (seawater = 35 ppt). Plasma osmolarity, sodium and chloride were similar to those in other crocodilians and not influenced by salinity. Plasma urea was low and did not vary with salinity. We found no evidence of lingual or other salt glands. Urinary electrolyte concentrations varied considerably with salinity and in ways reminiscent of A. mississippiensis but very different from C. porosus. Ca. latirostris dehydrated in seawater more rapidly than C. porosus and had substantially higher integumental permeability to water. Caiman did not drink seawater but rehydrated rapidly when returned to freshwater (FW). We found small caiman (<500 g) only in very low salinities (<3 ppt) and larger caiman closer to the sea. We postulate that medium to large Ca. latirostris can take advantage of the feeding opportunities presented by the estuarine mangal despite lacking the physiological specialisations of crocodylids. Two individuals which we re-sighted by chance had travelled at least 600 m in 2–3 days, showing that every caiman we captured or saw was within easy reach of FW. Most likely their habitation of the estuary and its mangal is achieved through a combination of low surface area:volume ratio, relatively impermeable skin, and periodic access to FW. A faunistic survey covering 25 sites in estuaries, coastal lakes and ponds along the west coast of South Africa between the Cape of Good Hope in the south and the Olifants River in the north was carried out in May 2014. The study aimed to establish a dataset with ecological and distribution data of ostracods and foraminifers for later palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that the distribution of the 19 foraminifer and 32 ostracod taxa was controlled mainly by habitat structure, but that specific conductivity (salinity) was best and solely described by the second axis, highlighting the usefulness of the two microfossil groups for salinity reconstructions. Habitat structure was demonstrated by the foraminifer species Trochamminita irregularis’ preference for stillwater areas of lakes. Sarscypridopsis aculeata and Sarscypridopsis glabrata were the dominant ostracod species in coastal ponds and lakes. However, their living distributions excluded each other, with S. aculeata preferring areas of lower salinity and S. glabrata dominating areas of higher salinity up to hyperhaline conditions in small, closed water bodies.  相似文献

The family Ariidae, sea catfish of the order Siluriformes, is widely distributed throughout the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. The three species of Ariidae found on the coasts and estuaries of West Africa are the smoothmouth catfish Carlarius heudelotii (Valenciennes 1840), the rough-head catfish Carlarius latiscutatus (Günther 1864) and the Guinean sea catfish Carlarius parkii (Günther 1864). They have been increasingly exploited by artisanal and industrial coastal fisheries in recent decades, but there is still little information available on their ecology and biology. The aim of this study was to deepen our knowledge of these three West African Ariidae species based on a dataset collected between 1980 and 2013 during experimental fishing programmes. They were carried out in Mauritania in the Banc d'Arguin National Park, in Senegal in the Sine Saloum estuary including the Bamboung Marine Protected Area (MPA), in The Gambia in the Gambia estuary, in Guinea-Bissau in the Urok Islands MPA in the Bijagos archipelago, in Guinea in the Fatala estuary and Dangara inlet, and in Côte d'Ivoire in the Ebrié Lagoon. C. latiscutatus accounted for 65%, C. parkii for 29% and C. heudelotii for 6% of total number of Ariidae sampled. C. latiscutatus was abundant in the Sine Saloum and Gambia estuaries as well as in Guinea and Guinea-Bissau and was the only species present in the Ebrié Lagoon. C. parkii was in the majority in Mauritania. The three species were recorded in a salinity range of 0 to 50, a temperature range of 19 to 34°C, in areas 1.7 to 15 m depth, and transparency ranging from 0.1 to 4 m (Secchi disk depth). C. heudelotii was present in less saline (25 vs. 32–34), less warm (27 vs. 29°C) and less transparent (0.8 m vs. 1.6 m) waters than the two other species. The maximum sizes (453 mm, 614 mm and 525 mm for, respectively, C. heudelotii, C. latiscutatus and C. parkii) were comparable to those recorded at sea. Length–weight relationships calculated for each species showed b coefficients greater than 3. Sex ratios were always in favour of females. The number of mature individuals and their smallest size at maturity were calculated per species, sex and study area. A size of 27–28 cm at first maturity was estimated for females of C. latiscutatus. A few dozen records made it possible to describe fecundity and cases of oral incubation by females. The diet of the three species was composed of crustaceans, fish and molluscs, confirming their classification as generalist predators. Thanks to their high environmental tolerance, these sea catfish populations are able to occupy both the continental shelf and adjacent estuaries throughout their life cycle, with the exception of spawning, which generally takes place at sea.  相似文献

Pituitaries removed from Tilapia mossambica adapted either to sea water or fresh water were incubated for 3 or 6 hours in isosmotic or hyposmotic medium. Activation of prolactin cells from pituitaries incubated in hyposmotic medium was indicated by frequent exocytosis and by proliferation of cellular organelles. These pituitaries also showed a reduction in prolactin content and an increase in the amount of bioassayable prolactin in the medium. Incorporation of tritiated leucine into prolactin was least in prolactin cells from seawater Tilapia incubated in isosmotic medium and greatest in those of freshwater Tilapia incubated in hyposmotic medium. These observations indicate that in Tilapia, both synthesis and secretion of prolactin may be stimulated directly by dilution of the medium bathing the pituitary. On the other hand, there were no ultrastructural changes in the presumptive growth hormone cells incubated for 3 or 6 hours in the hyposmotic medium. Hence, these cells do not appear to play a major osmoregulatory role.  相似文献

A prototype, boat‐mounted electrofisher capable of operation in estuarine waters (where electrical conductivities often exceed 20 000 µS cm?1) was assessed. Electrofishing was compared to fyke and mesh netting in four riverine estuaries and to seining in a lagoonal estuary (consisting of a series of brackish coastal lakes separated from the sea by a barrier system of sand dunes). Fish assemblage composition, length distributions and the probability of detecting ecological fish guilds (relating to estuary use, position in the water column and body size) were compared among gears. The assemblage composition of electrofishing samples differed from those of fyke nets in all riverine estuaries and from mesh netting in two. The assemblage composition of electrofishing samples differed from those of seining in structured seagrass habitats of the lagoonal estuary. When all species were pooled, the electrofisher sampled a broader range of lengths than either fyke or mesh netting in riverine estuaries or seining in lagoonal estuaries. The bias of electrofishing and netting towards particular species and size classes affected the probability of detecting some ecological guilds, highlighting the potential implications of gear choice on understanding estuarine ecological function. The detection of guilds varied with gear type and environmental conditions, including stratification, water depth and surface electrical conductivity. Assessments with the aim to characterize the structure of fish assemblages will benefit from the use of multiple gears. Electrofishing shows immense promise for discretely sampling highly structured habitats to test hypotheses about their use.  相似文献

Preference for low salinity inland water may be an important factor in the immigration of postlarval penaeid shrimp from the sea to their nursery grounds, such as estuaries, bays, and coastal lagoons. In the present work, it was shown that four species from west Mexico - Penaeus vannamei Boone, P stylirostris Stimpson, P. californiesis (Holmes), and P. brevirostris Kingsley - all prefer salinities less than that of normal sea water. Older or larger postlarvae preferred lower salinities than early postlarvae. Of the four species, P. vannamei has the lowest preference and this species predominates in the coastal lagoon fisheries of the area. Postlarvae of P. californiensis and P. brevirostris were also shown to prefer lagoon water to sea water. The importance of these preferences is discussed in relation to the normal postlarval migrations.  相似文献

Separate and combined effects of changes in salinity and water temperature on the survival of laboratory hatched juvenileMesopodsis orientalis were investifated. Full strength seawater (35) was not favorable to juvenile survival. Salinities down to 10% seawater were tolerated when subjected to sudden exposure, but salinity acclimation increased juvenile ability to tolerate even fresh water. Water temperatures tolerated by the animals ranged from 12°C to 33°C. Salinities of 30% to 60% seawater and water temperatures of 22°C to 28°C were most favorable to the juveniles. Experimental results were compared with field observations and a relationship between the salinity and temperature of seawater and abundance of juveniles in May to June, and November to January in Bombay coastal waters (west coast of India) was established. Seawater of reduced salinity was found to be a major factor for occurrence of juvenileM. orientalis in abundance.  相似文献

1. We examined 60 clear, stained and glacial lakes in Alaska to quantify the relative importance of climate setting, morphometry, transparency, and lake typology influences on various thermal characteristics including duration of growing season, water temperature, mixing depth (MD) and heat content. We used analysis of variance (ANOVA ) to test for differences in thermal characteristics in association with lake type and employed simple and multiple regression techniques to determine functional relationships between variables. 2. Latitude accounted for 60% of the total variance in length of growing season. Although the date of maximum heat content was consistent among lake types, stained lakes had longer growing seasons compared with clear and glacially turbid lakes. 3. Maximum water temperatures were approximately 3 °C higher in stained lakes and 3 °C lower in glacial lakes compared with clear lakes. Mean water column temperature was significantly lower in glacial lakes (5.9 °C) compared with clear lakes (7.4 °C), but there was no statistical difference between clear and stained lakes (7.2 °C) or between stained and glacial lakes. Maximum surface temperatures were positively related (r2=0.51) to colour (humic stain), but negatively related (r2=0.40) to inorganic turbidity (glacial silt). 4. Only about half of the lakes in our data set underwent summer stratification. None of the glacial lakes developed a distinct thermocline, but stained lakes had shallower MDs (mean 8 m) than clear lakes (mean 12 m). Thus, the MD to total depth ratio for glacial lakes was unity compared with mean values of 0.66 for clear lakes and 0.34 for stained lakes. Fetch explained a significant fraction (51%) of the total variance in MD. Considering all lakes, MD was inversely related to transparency (Secchi depth). In contrast, considering only stratified clear and stained lakes, MD was positively related to Secchi depth (SD), the fraction of the total variance explained was 23%. The sign of the slope was dependent on the mixture of lake types. 5. Despite significant (ANOVA ) differences in water temperatures, growing season, and MDs among the three lake types, there were no statistical differences in the summer heat budget associated with lake type. In addition, heat budgets were poorly correlated with lake area, depth and volume. In contrast, mean water column temperature was strongly and inversely related (r2=0.77) to mean depth. 6. Potential explanations for the similarity in summer heat budget among lake types and weak correlation with morphometry were attributed to different patterns in vertical heat distribution associated with lake typology (colour and turbidity) differences. 7. Multiple linear regression including climatic (latitude and altitude), morphometric, and lake typology (colour and turbidity) factors demonstrated a hierarchical (climate–morphometry–typology) regulation of growing season characteristics, water temperatures, stratification and heat retention. A regional and hierarchical framework for lake thermal characteristics adds to our understanding of potential responses to climatic change and may be important for regional management objectives for fisheries.  相似文献

Freshwater sculpins probably evolved from marine ancestors which entered bodies of water such as proglacial lakes or lakes which were gradually isolated from the sea by isostatic rebound. Sculpins in fresh water lakes (Myoxocephalus thompsoni [Girard]) lack cephalic horns and live well below a depth of 10 m. Those in the sea (Myoxocephalus quadricornis [Linnaeus]) typically live above 10 m and possess a well developed set of four cephalic horns. The sculpins in Garrow Lake, North West Territories, are intermediate between the marine and fresh water forms with respect to their depth distributions and their cephalic horns (spines). As a consequence, Garrow Lake, which separated from the sea some 3000 years ago, serves as an excellent laboratory for studying evolutionary changes in this sculpin. The age of the lake was based on carbon-14 dates of the fossil pelecypods from raised beaches around the lake and from observations of rates of isostatic rebound in the area as reported by Dickman & Ouellet 1983 and Pagé et al. 1984. During the last 3000 years, the surface waters of Garrow Lake have freshened and its sculpins have apparently adapted to this top down freshening by occupying a depth where the salinity of the lake approaches that of sea water. As a result, the sculpin population in Garrow Lake lives deeper than the sculpin population in the nearby Garrow Bay. Thus, the deeper dwelling Garrow Lake sculpins appear to be less vulnerable to avian predation than their shallow water dwelling marine ancestors. It is hypothesized that reduced avian predation of the Garrow Lake sculpin population is associated with the observed reduction in their cephalic horns which impart a certain degree of disruptive colouration and disruptive pattern outline allowing the shallow dwelling marine species to blend in with its background in a manner which appears to make it less visible to avian predators.It is unfortunate that the three thousand year old Garrow Lake sculpin population is now endangered by mine tailings entering the lake from the nearby Cominco Ltd. mine. The entire food chain of the lake appears to have been severely impacted by lead and zinc mine tailings entering Garrow Lake at a rate of 100 metric tonnes per hour.  相似文献
