An optimum medium for culturing Melosira italica (subsp. subartica) is described. The optimum concentration of humic acid for growth of this species in culture was found to be 46 μg/ml. Tolerance to cupric ions also increased by addition of humic acid. Cultures tended to maintain a pH of about 6.0. Some ecological implications are discussed. Summary Skeletal muscle ribosome preparations from diabetic rats have lower polysome content than those from normal animals. The ratio of poly(A) containing RNA between polysomes and postribosomal supernatant has been measured both in normal and diabetic rats. A systematic list of the echinoderms of the Gulf of California, based on museum specimens of the Colección Nacional de Equinodermos, Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnologia, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. is presented. A total of 193 echinoderm species is recorded, distributed in 108 genera, 51 families and 19 orders. 12 new records for the Gulf of California are presented: Asteroidea (four), Ophiuroidea (three) and Holothuroidea (five).  相似文献

We present a systematic list of the echinoderms from Gulf of Mexico's Mexican waters based on specimens of the Colecci6n Nacional de Equinodermos, Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnologia, Universidad Nacional Aut6noma de México and the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. This list reveals an important echinoderm biodiversity present in the Gulf of Mexico, where five of the six echinoderm classes are represented. Corn cobs were treated at room temperature with NaOH at a ratio of 100:3 (w/w), but with different volumes of water from 3 to 0.25 ml/g corn cob. The biomasses obtained from a mixture culture of Cellulomonas sp. and Bacillus subtilis under each condition were similar (5.5 to 6.0 g/l) and protein only varied between 30% and 40% (w/w biomass) or 1.9 and 2.2 g/l. Ammonia-treated bagasse with 80%(w/w) moisture content was subjected to mixed-culture solid-substrate fermentation (SSF) with Trichoderma reesei LM-UC4 and Aspergillus phoenicis QM 329, in flask or pot fermenters, for cellulase production. Significantly higher activities of all the enzymes of the cellulase complex were achieved in 4 days of mixed-culture SSF than in single-culture (T. reesei) SSF. The highest filter-paper-cellulase and -glucosidase activities seen in mixed-culture SSF were 18.7 and 38.6 IU/g dry wt, respectively, representing approx. 3- and 6-fold increases over the activities attained in single-culture SSF. The mixed-culture SSF process also converted about 46% of the cellulose and hemicellulose to reducing sugars and enriched the product with 13% fungal protein. The biomass productivity, 0.29 gl-1.h, and enzyme productivity, 28.0 IU I-1.h, were about twice as high in the mixed-culture than in the single-culture.R. A survey was carried out to determine the perception and knowledge about biotechnology and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in a sample (n=750) of university students from three public universities in Costa Rica: Universidad de Costa Rica, Universidad Nacional and Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica. The study revealed that 88% of the students showed a satisfactory level of knowledge about modem biotechnology and 79% of them reported a favorable opinion and good acceptance of this technology. Students would accept some risks associated to biotechnology if it represents an improvement to the competitiveness of Costa Rica. Some differences were detected in the opinions from students of the three universities that can be associated to the area of study. Students from social disciplines showed a higher percentage of negative acceptances to biotechnology and GMOs when their opinions were compared with those of students from life sciences and technologies.  相似文献

This Editorial describes both the motivation for, and the five articles appearing in, the Issue Focus dedicated to the 2nd Costa Rica Biophysics Symposium which was held in March 2021. Some recent history about both the symposium and developments in science occurring within Costa Rica is described. 

The Costa Rica Biophysics Symposium was conceived as a forum for faculty, scholars and students interested on cutting-edge topics in biophysics and related fields. Following the success of the first event organized in 2019 (Solís et al (2020), the second edition of the symposium took place on March 2021 with the support of the Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Costa Rica (ANC, National Academy of Sciences of Costa Rica), the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB), the German Society of Biophysics (DGfB), and the Universidad Nacional of Costa Rica (UNA). The symposium aimed to reinforce and enhance the novel network of investigators established in the 2019 event. Participation of Costa Rican presenters, either located in the country or abroad, and foreign scientists from the USA, Germany, France, and Switzerland (Solís et al. (2021a) translated into an expansion and internationalization of the previous network. Moreover, the symposium attracted a broad international audience, which increases the opportunities of further international collaboration.The meeting was organized into 14 presentations and one keynote lecture. It was attended by researchers of the three main universities of Costa Rica: Universidad Nacional (UNA), Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) and Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC). Presenters from international universities were also present, including UT Southwestern Medical Center, USA; Klinikum Nürnberg Medical School, Germany; École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland; Institut de Neurosciences de Montpellier, France; University of California Berkeley, USA; and The University of Chicago, USA. The topics presented in the symposium were diverse and covered cutting-edge biophysical research areas. The presentations ranged from channel electrophysiology, machine learning focused on cellular microscopy, prediction of protein–protein interactions, channelopathies and novel biophysical techniques, among others (Solís et al., 2021a). Furthermore, each lecture was followed by questions from the audience, allowing discussion, engagement and interaction between researchers in spite of the limitations of a virtual symposium. The closing event for the symposium was a lecture by the world-renowned biophysicist Francisco Bezanilla from the University of Chicago, who engaged the audience into a master presentation of his vast research on protein voltage-sensor domains (VSD) with a focus on his recent work on the non-canonical mechanisms for VSD-mediated regulation of pore domains in voltage-gated potassium channels (Carvalho-de-Souza and Bezanilla 2019). After the consequent discussion, the symposium finished with a networking activity, where audience and presenters were able to socialize and share experiences.  相似文献
