Reared in tubular aquaria containing different depths of water (2.5, 5.0, 15.5, 31.0 and 40.0 cm), the obligatory air-breathing fish Ophiocephalus striatus (760 mg; 4.5 cm L) was forced to swim vertically a longer or shorter distance per surfacing. Interaction of temperature (17, 22, 27, 32 and 37°C) and aquarium depth reveals that surfacing frequency of the fish, fed ad libitum on Tilapia muscle, increased with increasing aquarium depth, but the increase was significant only at 27 and 32°C; in the starving series, the frequency was not depth-dependent at any temperature. Owing to the sustained surfacing activity and the consequent fatigue, the test individuals ‘hung’ to the surface for a definite period. Hanging frequency was temperature-dependent, but not a depth-dependent activity either in the starving or feeding series. At any temperature and aquarium depth, the feeding series hung more frequently than the starving series. Hanging duration increased from about 1 hr/day in either series at 17°C to 6 and 18 hr/day in the feeding and starving series at 37°C. At any tested temperature, distance swum by the feeding and starving series was a depth-dependent activity. The feeding series at 32°C exhibited the maximum swimming speed of 2 L/sec for 4.8 hr/day in the 40 cm depth. With increasing temperature and depth, feeding rate increased (from 24 to 225 g cal/g live fish/day); between 17 and 27°C, it was more a temperature-dependent activity. The highest rate (47 g cal / g/day) and efficiency (27%) of conversion were observed at 32°C; whereas the efficiency was depth-dependent, the rate was not. Oxygen uptake was a temperature-dependent activity; aquarium depth played a secondary role. Briefly, O. striatus in deeper aquaria consumed significantly more food and converted lesser, as it surfaced more frequently and swam longer distance, dissipating more energy on metabolism and swimming activity. Hence, culturing O. striatus in shallow waters at the optimum temperature of 32°C will be advantageous. This work was supported by the University Grants Commission's (New Delhi) grant to Dr. T. J. Summary Reared in tubular aquaria containing 20, 40 and 60 cm depth 0f water, Heteropneustes fossilis (20 g; 17 cm body length), an air-breathing catfish, swam 40, 80 and 120 cm/surfacing to exchange atmospheric air. With decreasing Po2, the starving groups reduced the surfacing, whereas, the decrease in the Po2 beyond 70 mm Hg induced the feeding groups to surface more frequently. Feeding groups exposed to 20 and 40 cm depth surfaced 353 and 423 times, travelling distances of 141 and 338 m/day, at the energy cost of 8.5 and 9.7 mg dry fish substance/g live fish/day, respectively. The corresponding starving groups surfaced only 163 times/ day and swam 65 and 130 m/day at the expense of 1.2 and 1.6 mg/g/day. Feeding and starving groups reduced the number of surfacing, when the distance they have to swim exceeded 0.8 m/day and increased the proportion of O2 taken up branchially; the starving and feeding groups exposed to 60 cm depth surfaced only 70 and 271 times, swimming 84 and 325 m/day, at the energy cost of 2.9 and 17.6 mg/g/day. Feeding and conversion rates steadily increased from 16.9 mg dry liver/g live fish/day and 6.7 mg dry fish substance/g live fish/day in those exposed to the shallowest aquarium to 27.4 mg/g/day and 7.0 mg/g/day in those exposed t0 the maximum depth, respectively; conversion efficiency was 44% in the former and 28% in the latter; hence culturing H. fossilis in the shallow waters is profitable.  相似文献

Reared in (tubular) aquaria containing different depths of water, Ophiocephalus striatus (0.7 g, 4.5 cm body length), an obligatory air-breathing tropical fish, swam long or short distances to enable themselves to exchange atmospheric air. In each tested depth (2.5, 5.0, 15.5, 31.0 and 40.0 cm) series, one group was starved, while the other was fed ad libitum twice a day on fish muscle. In the shallowest water (2.5 cm depth), the feeding group surfaced 1,294 times, travelling 64.7 m at an energy cost of 20.4 mg dry fish substance/g live fish/day, against those exposed to the deepest water (40 cm depth), which expended 35.8 mg/g/day, swimming 1,503.4 m on 1,879 visits to the surface. The starving group surfaced only 482 times, travelling 24.1 m at an expense of 5.8 mg/g/day in the shallowest water, while those at 40 cm depth surfaced 504 times, swimming 403.2 m at an energy cost of 7.4 mg/g/day. Owing to the sustained swimming activity and the consequent fatigue, the test individuals belonging to both groups in all the tested series hang to the surface for a definite interval, repaying the O2 debt. Observations were also made to assess the duration of hanging to precisely estimate the distance travelled. Irrespective of changes in depths of water, the duration of hanging to surface was only 3.0 hr/day for the feeding groups, while it was as much as 15.5 hr/day for the starving groups. The maximum sustained metabolic level of O.striatus reared in 40 cm depth was equivalent to 1.23 ml O2/g/hr, which is about 2 times higher than the value reported for the active metabolism of swimming Oncorhynchus nerka at 15°C in Brett's (1964) respirometer. O.striatus reared in 2.5 cm depth fed 32.0 mg and converted 6.7 mg dry food/g live fish/day, while those exposed to the deepest water fed 49.1 mg, but converted only 5.5 mg/g/day. Culturing obligatory air-breathing fishes in shallow waters will be advantageous.  相似文献

The obligatory air-breathing fish Ophiocephalus striatus, fed on goat-liver, surfaced 906 times, swimming 270 m/day in aerated water (mean pO2: 151 mm Hg) and 883 times, travelling 325 m/day in non-aerated water (92 mm Hg); surfacing and swimming activities increased below the pO2 of 74 mm Hg. Hanging duration was more (8.4 hr/day) in the aerated series than that in the non-aerated series (5.9 hr/day). Rates of feeding, absorption and metabolism of either series averaged to 131,126 and 93 (= 0.8 ml O2/g/hr) g cal/g live fish/day. Conversion rate and efficiency slightly increased from 22 g cal/g/day and 17% in the aerated series. Culturing O. striatus in aerated waters may not be advantageous. Starving groups in the aerated and non-aerated aquaria surfaced 317 times, hung for 14.7 hr, and swam 61 m/day, expending 15 g cal/ g/day (= 0.1 ml O2/g/hr).  相似文献

Summary Cyanoketone administered via the food (0.1, 0.2 and 2 mg/g) for 8 weeks from the first feeding (day 46 after fertilization) or via the aquarium water (3 and 30 mg/100 l) for 4 weeks from day 41 does not influence the activity of 3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3-HSD) in the interstitial cells of the gonads or interrenal cells of juvenile trout in vivo. However, the number of 3-HSD-positive interrenal cells was strongly increased by administration of the highest dose of cyanoketone via both routes. These high doses furthermore affect the sex ratio in favor of males. It is concluded that interrenal tissue is responsible for the masculinizing effect of cyanoketone via increased production of androgens and/or corticosteroids. Cyanoketone at concentrations of 0.01 to 100 g/ml causes a dose-response inhibition of 3-HSD activity in the interrenal cells, when the substance is administered to an incubation medium for demonstration of this enzyme in tissue sections. The controversial in-vivo and in-vitro effects of cyanoketone on 3-HSD activity are discussed.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Atlantic salmon (Satmo salar) were treated with Silastic pellet implants containing testosterone (200 μg/g body weight) four times in a year. Eggs stripped from control (sham implantation) and testosterone-treated fish were fertilized and comparisons of free and total amino acid compositions made until first feeding.
  • 2.2. Despite having eggs which were smaller in diameter, lighter in weight and lower in total amino acid contents, alevins from testosterone-treated fish were heavier in wet weight and larger in body length, and exhibited enhanced free amino acid contents at first feeding.
  • 3.3. The qualitative composition of total amino acids in eggs from treated and control fish did not differ.
  • 4.4. Total amino acid pool of eggs and alevins declined during development, but an increase in the free amino acid pool was noticed through development. The increase in free amino acid pool was higher in eggs and alevins from treated fish than controls, perhaps due to enhanced mobilization of the free amino acid pool.

A laboratory experiment was performed to study the responsiveness of selected condition measures to starvation in herring, Clupea harengus, larvae in relation to temperature and ontogeny. The larvae at two intervals of development, i.e. stage 1 larvae with initial exogenous feeding and stage 2 larvae with established feeding prior to notochord flexion, were reared at three temperatures (5, 8 and 11°C) and subjected to sub-lethal durations of starvation. Temporal changes in standard length, dry weight, DNA concentration (% of dry weight), RNA concentration (% of dry weight), Fulton's condition factor (CF) and RNA/DNA were assessed and compared with fed controls. Starvation led to decreases in dry weight, CF, RNA concentration and RNA/DNA, while it led to an increase in DNA concentration. Higher responsiveness to starvation was observed at higher temperatures, and the magnitude of the changes was higher in stage 2 larvae. The shortest latency in starvation response was found with respect to RNA/DNA which was length independent in the size range studied. RNA/DNA was also significantly related to average DNA growth rate, and the model for DNA growth rate was, SGRDNA=4.49 RNA/DNA + 7.14 T – 0.42 T2 – 37.5 ; n=32, r2=0.85, p < 0.001). While the model seemed to adequately represent the average temperature dependent DNA growth, a relatively low classification success made it unsuitable for depicting individually starving larvae. Critical levels in DNA concentration can be used (2.2% for stage 1 larvae, 2.9% for stage 2 larvae) to differentiate starving larvae (after 3 – 5 days) from feeding larvae. RNA/DNA was the most sensitive and suitable condition index studied in detecting early starvation of herring larvae.  相似文献

We have demonstrated that larvae of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L) can successfully complete their first instar when fed apple leaves instead of fruit. Larvae fed leaves after hatching maximized their feeding intensity (about 320 g/larva/day) on day 2. Weight gain revealed a stereotypic sigmoid pattern that peaked on day 3. Although the maximum body weight of larvae fed leaves was 70–85% less than for larvae maintained on apples or on artificial diet, 100% of larvae fed leaves molted to the second instar 3–5 days after hatching. Our investigation revealed a diurnal pattern of leaf ingestion, and neonates' feeding intensity decreased significantly during the scotophase. We also demonstrated that monosodium glutamate (MSG) increased feeding on leaves by codling moth larvae. Depending on the duration of the bioassay, and larval age at time of initial exposure, 0.05 mg/ml and 0.1 mg/ml MSG increased apple leaf consumption by 25–60% over leaves alone. The effect of monosodium glutamate was best demonstrated during the first day following hatching. Exposure to MSG also accelerated molting to the second instar. Larvae exposed to MSG initiated consumption of leaf tissue significantly earlier than control neonates. The feeding stimulatory effect of MSG was not observed if exposure to this chemical was delayed until 3–4 h after hatch.The addition of feeding stimulants to pesticides that act via the alimentary tract may reduce the amount of active ingredients needed to maintain the efficacy of these formulations. Here, we postulate that first instar codling moth larvae are potential targets for treatment with pesticide formulations enhanced with monosodium glutamate.  相似文献

Overlapping territories of a benthophagous morwong, Goniistius zonatus, were studied at two temperate water locations (Morode and Arakashi) in southern Japan. At both locations, total length (TL) of the fish inhabiting the study areas ranged from 12 cm to 34 cm, but fish 20–25 cm TL were not found in the Arakashi study area. At Morode, individuals maintained territories against conspecifics of similar size, and the territories broadly overlapped among three size classes (small < 20 cm medium <25 cm large). At Arakashi, large-sized fish chased individuals of both the same- and medium-sized individuals from their territories, resulting in territory overlap only between large and small size classes. The territories were apparently maintained for feeding, as the main activity of the fish within the territories was foraging and no reproductive behavior was observed at either location. All fish foraged on similar substrates in the daytime. At Morode, however, the diet composition differed among different size classes, whereas at Arakashi, fish of all sizes fed on quite similar foods. A comparison between the two populations indicates that the territory overlap among the three size classes at Morode may have resulted from food-resource partitioning.  相似文献

The indirect, non-lethal results of predation, such as reduction in feeding time or restraint in seeking sexual partners and/or natural resources, have a drastic effect on prey populations. In this study, we investigated the behaviour of two serpa tetras Hyphessobrycon eques groups, one wild and the other born and raised in captivity, to evaluate how their feeding behaviour is affected by the avian predator, the rufescent tiger-heron Trigrisoma lineatum (using a taxidermy specimen). For a total of 133 observation hours, the feeding behaviour of each fish group was observed according to the absence (control) or presence (treatments) of a predator near the aquarium surface. The results showed that the presence of a predator on the surface inhibits the feeding behaviour of H. eques. The differences observed between the groups are probably due to the fishes experiences with predators. Our results suggest that fish-eating birds may affect prey populations in streams and ponds perhaps more through non-lethal effects, on feeding behaviour for example, than directly through death rates.  相似文献

Maximum Reactive Distance (RDmax) and the area of the Reactive Perceptual Field (RPF) for the fish Macropodus cupanus were determined, using the fourth instar mosquito larva (Culex fatigans) as the prey organism. RDmax and the area of RPF increased with increasing body weight of the fish as well as increasing food deprivation time. Satiation time (St) as a function of the weight of the fish and aquarium temperature were also determined. In larger W classes (570 and 270 mg) St was not influenced by temperature. To get satiated the smallest W class (80 mg) required feeding periods of 40, 30 and 20 minutes at 22 or 27, 32 and 37°C, respectively.  相似文献

The depth distribution of the common bully, Gobiomorphus cotidianus, a small benthic forage fish, was measured by trapping at set depths from 0–70m in three large oligotrophic lakes, including one where inorganic sediment from a glacially-fed river produces turbid conditions. Bullies occurred at all depths from 0.5–70m in the clear lakes, but none were present below 25m in the turbid lake. Two groups of bullies were present in the clear lakes; a high-density, littoral stock at depths of 0.5–25m, and a low-density, profundal stock at depths of 30–70m. These groups were further distinguished by differing buoyancy requirements and feeding habits. The swimbladders of littoral bullies contained gas, but those of the profundal bullies, which fed more than littoral bullies by both day and night, did not. The variation in mean CPUE with depth within the littoral zone was not related to water temperature, oxygen concentration, or conductivity. Nor was it related to a reduction in light levels or to reduced water transparency caused by increased turbidity. It may therefore be controlled by biotic factors. The absence of a profundal stock below the littoral zone in the turbid lake indicates that the settlement of fines from turbid inputs may affect bully abundance in deeper waters. As conventional measures of the abundance of benthic fish in lakes are often restricted to littoral habitats, and do not reflect changes in abundance with depth, an index of overall abundance based on depth distribution was developed to allow comparisons between lakes.  相似文献

On a restricted food supply of Tubifex tubifex (2h/day) the fish consumed only 69.5 mg dry food/g live fish/day and grew only to 25.6 mg live body weight by the 30th day of it's age, while those fed ad libitum consumed 94.7 mg/g/day and attained a body weight of 125.9 mg live weight by the 30th day. Conversion efficiency (K1) averaged to 8.3% in the former and 14.1% in the latter series, throughout the 30 day experimental period.Feeding rate of the test series fed individually and at ad libitum, decreased from 780 mg dry food/g dry fish/day for a fish weighing 4 mg dry weight to 180 mg/g/ day for one weighing 41 mg, exhibiting a log-log relationship to the body weight (Y = 2.20140–0.5639 X). Swimming activity of the obligatory air-breathing fish Ophiocephalus striatus reared in cylindrical aquaria on different rations (0–43.3 mg/g/day) increased from 58 m/day for the starving group to 439 m/day for the group fed a maximum ration. Swimming speed also increased from 2.4 cm/sec in the former group to 5.2 cm/sec in the latter group. Owing to sustained swimming activity and the consequent fatigue, the test individuals 'hung' to the surface for a definite interval. Duration of surface 'hanging' increased from 3.2 h/day to 15.8 h/day with decreasing ration. The group receiving 25.5 mg/g/day converted most efficiently (28%). The maintenance energy cost is equivalent to 10 mg/g/day and dry substance equivalent to 5 or 12 mg/g/day was expended on the sustained swimming activity by the fish receiving the optimum (25 mg/g/day) or the maximum (43 mg/g/day) ration.  相似文献

A gradient in H. azteca growth was created by reducing food ration. Tests were initiated with neonates (48 h old) and the effects of an altered food ration on survival and growth were examined after 10 and 49 days. Growth rates decreased significantly with reduced food ration (10 day growth rates ranged from 1.2 µg d–1 in the highest feeding regime to 0.5 µg d–1 in lowest feeding regime). Survival after 10 days was not affected by ration, ranging from 86 to 96%. A growth rate of 1.2 µg d–1 at day 10 resulted in mean dry weight (1.0 mg), survival (62%) and reproduction (9.3 neonates/female) at day 49 similar to reported values for this species. Growth rates 0.9 µg d–1 at day 10 corresponded to significantly reduced reproduction at day 49 (i.e., < 1 neonate per female). Time to the onset of amplexus increased with decreasing ration suggesting reduced ration may have delayed reproduction.  相似文献

We collected pearly razorfish, Xyrichtys novacula (Labridae), from a sandy bottom of Capo dOrlando (Tyrrhenian Sea) to study their feeding habits. We caught fish by hand-lines and seine nets and identified, counted and weighed food items in their stomachs. We evaluated the importance of the different prey types by calculating the frequency of occurrence, abundance and mass. We used these values to calculate the index of relative importance (IRI) for each taxonomic category and a modified index (MI) which did not incorporate %N into the formula. Gammarideans were dominant food items in terms of %F but showed a very low MI value; the bivalve Acanthocardia tubercolata was the dominant species in terms of %W and MI value. The prey items were mostly benthic organisms belonging to the assemblage of fine, well-sorted sands showing that X. novacula is a benthic feeder. Despite the large number of prey taxa found, few species accounted for most of the prey consumed, indicating specialist feeding, as confirmed by the low value of the Levins standardised index. We found significant differences in prey distribution among size classes, with the highest prey diversity recorded in 120–140 mm TL size classes. Correspondence analysis showed a trend of increasing predator size classes among prey items, with small prey, such as copepods and amphipods, in the smallest predator size classes and bigger prey in the larger ones. Prey caught by larger predators differed significantly in weight from those taken by smaller specimens. There was a significant positive correlation of fish length with bivalves, decapods and echinoids, and a negative one with copepods, ostracods, caprellids, gammarideans. There were no significant differences between males and females of overlapping sizes. Juveniles are able to exploit only small, vulnerable prey, while adults take few, large prey, thereby avoiding competition with juveniles.  相似文献

The diet of coral trout Plectropomus leopardus (Serranidae) was studied over a two year period at One Tree Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Rapid visual counts demonstrated that P. leopardus were most abundant on the reef slope habitat and inner edge of the enclosed lagoon. Few P. leopardus were found at sites from inner lagoon. It was hypothesized that diet would vary among habitats, times and size classes of coral trout. Ninety-two percent of P. leopardus that contained prey had consumed fish and 87% had only eaten fish. Many types of reef fish were taken by P. leopardus (e.g. Pomacentridae, Scaridae, Blenniidae and Labridae). Most pelagic prey (Clupeidae and Engraulididae) were taken on the reef slope, while some prey were solely or pimarily taken in the lagoon (e.g. Blenniidae and crustaceans). Most pelagic prey were taken on the reef slope in summer by P. leopardus>250 mm (SL). Plectropomus leopardus (<200 mm) from the lagoon had a higher proportion of invertebrates in the diet than fish from the reef slope. Plectropomus leopardus of all sizes ate small fish, while largest fish generally consumed largest prey (especially adult scarids and labrids). I argue that interactions among multiple species of prey and predators need more attention, because piscivores may respond to prey in different ways according to habitat type as well as the number and type of other prey types present. Furthermore, different sizes of fish (e.g. coral trout) may impact assemblages of prey in different ways.  相似文献

Summary The deduced amino acid sequences of the -polypeptides ofPisum legumin from two loci on chromosome 1 were compared with one from a locus on chromosome 7. The chromosome 1-derived sequences were 80% identical, but each was only 50% homologous to the chromosome 7-derived sequence. Comparison of these sequences with those of homologous polypeptides from two other species of the Leguminoseae showed that the chromosome 1-derivedPisum sequences were more similar to legumin B than to legumin A fromVicia faba and were more closely related to group II than to group I glycinins fromGlycine max. The converse was true for the chromosome 7-derivedPisum sequences. This suggests that divergence of legumin-like sequences predated speciation in these three members of the Leguminosease.Among the threePisum sequence classes, a highly variable region was identified within the -polypeptide, just to the amino-terminal side of the processing site. This region varied considerably in length within the three classes ofPisum -polypeptide sequence, a variation which far exceeded that which has previously been described for other legumins and glycinins. The chromosome 7-derived, and one of the chromosome 1-derived -polypeptide sequences contained different tandem repeats in this region.  相似文献

Pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus (=Colossoma mitrei), is a South American warm water fish species found in the temperature range of 15–35°C. The culture of a warm water species in temperate regions demands knowledge on its temperature requirements. Pacu introduction into the Israeli fish culture system is being considered. Temperature range in the region is 8–33°C, thus the minimum winter water temperatures might be a limiting factor. To determine what is the minimum temperature pacu would tolerate, and hence which overwintering operations in warm-temperate regions are required for this warm water species, low temperature tolerance tests in the laboratory and observations in the field were carried out. Laboratory experiments reducing temperature by 1–3°C per day were carried out with fish of 150–200g, about the size pacu reach after one culture season. The field observations compared survival of two-year-old pacu of 1.3kg mean weight overwintered in outdoors and in greenhouse ponds. For one-year-old fish 7.5°C was found to be the lower temperature tolerance limit. Two-year-old fish withstand short exposures to this temperature rather well and their lower tolerance limit might be lower. This indicates that in warm-temperate regions pacu should survive in outdoors ponds. In this case some loss of weight should be expected, and suspension of feeding when temperature drops below 16–18°C is recommended to avoid wasting feed that the fish will not consume anyway. To be in the safe side, inflow of the warmest available water into the ponds is recommended if maximum water temperature drops to 10°C or below. Overwintering in greenhouses or other heated facilities would be recommended if an exceptionally cold winter is expected and for regions with lower winter minimum temperatures.  相似文献

The use of 2H2O in tank water to assess protein synthesis rates in fish is a relatively novel methodology that could allow for a better understanding of the effects of particular nutritional and environmental variables on rates of protein accretion. As such, this study involved an assessment and comparison of protein synthesis rates in the muscle of juvenile red drum fed a control diet (nutritionally complete) versus a valine (Val)-deficient diet. Six groups of 12 juvenile red drum, initially weighing ~ 4.5 g/fish, were stocked in six separate 38-L aquaria operating as a recirculating system. Fish were acclimatized to experimental conditions for 2 weeks while being fed the control diet. Just prior to initiating the protein synthesis assay, one aquarium of fish was fed the control diet while a second aquarium of fish was fed the Val-deficient diet. Immediately after consuming the experimental diets, each group of fish was moved to an independent aquarium containing 2H2O, and the fractional synthetic rate (FSR) of protein synthesis was obtained at 12, 24, 36 and 48 h after feeding by collecting two fish per treatment at each time point. This protein synthesis assay procedure was performed in three separate sessions, and considered as replicates over time (n = 3) for fish fed the control or Val-deficient diets immediately before initiating the session. Results indicated that a one-time feeding of a diet deficient in Val significantly reduced protein synthesis rates in the muscle of red drum. In addition, a significant effect of time after feeding was found, where observed FSR values peaked at 12 h after feeding and decreased as time progressed. In conclusion, deuterium methodologies were applicable to red drum, and this approach had the sensitivity to assess differences in protein synthesis rates when dietary perturbations were introduced.
