In order to elucidate the dominant–subordinate relationship between the foundress and workers, five colonies of the paper wasp Polistes japonicus were observed in a netted and covered cage located outdoors. The number of workers in each colony ranged from four to eight. Workers were divided into first and second broods. Abdominal wagging and ovipositing were performed almost exclusively by the foundress throughout colony development. However, an analysis of aggressive encounters indicated that although the foundress hardly received dominance behaviors (aggression) from workers, it lacked either partially or completely the following characteristics of the queen that are usually seen in paper-wasp colonies with independent-founding queens (except in one colony that produced no second brood): the queen being socially dominant over any worker (the queen had more wins than losses in one-on-one dominance contests with any worker), exhibiting the highest frequency of dominance behaviors, and directing dominance behaviors primarily toward the socially most-dominant worker. In particular, during the mixed-brood period (when all first- and second-brood workers were present on the nest) the foundress hardly exhibited dominance behaviors toward socially dominant workers (mainly second brood) but frequently directed dominance behaviors toward socially subordinate workers (mainly first brood). The foundress disappeared in two colonies before the reproductives emerged; in these colonies the socially most-dominant worker inherited the colony and laid many eggs. The frequency of abdominal wagging by these two foundresses decreased during colony development, while it did not in the other colonies. This suggests that abdominal wagging provides information about the vigor of the performer. The superseder was socially dominant over all other workers, but spent little time wagging its abdomen and allowed some workers to lay eggs.  相似文献

Cannibalism is a behavioral trait seen in a number of species and can be favored when the fitness gain outweighs the cost. In social wasps, field studies have suggested that food limitation causes larval cannibalism as a compensation of a meal for adult wasp and/or earlier production of the first workers, but experimental studies for the effect of food availability on larval cannibalism have been very scarce. Hence we examined whether Polistes chinensis antennalis foundresses exhibit a higher level of larval cannibalization under food-limited conditions than under food-available conditions. Larval cannibalization occurred frequently under both prey- and honey-limited conditions; however, young larvae were more frequently cannibalized than old larvae in the prey-limited colonies, while old larvae were more frequently cannibalized than young larvae in the honey-limited colonies. The number of days between colony initiation and the emergence of the first workers was not significantly different between the prey-limited and prey-available colonies, suggesting that under prey-limited conditions P. chinensis antennalis foundresses tend to cannibalize their young larvae and feed probably the flesh of these cannibalized larvae to old larvae in order to ensure the rapid production of the first workers. On the other hand, the number of days between colony initiation and the emergence of the first workers was longer in the honey-limited colonies than in the honey-available colonies. We propose explanations for the first time for why the foundresses in the honey-limited conditions cannibalized their old larvae more frequently than their young larvae in spite of this resulting in the delayed emergence of the first workers.  相似文献

Abstract. Multiple-foundress colonies of Polistes metricus Say produce their first workers earlier than single-foundress colonies. This is probably an advantage in reducing predation and usurpation by conspecifics and may partially explain the advantage to certain foundresses in joining other foundresses, likely their sisters, rather than establishing their own nests alone. There is no evidence that multiple foundresses work synergistically to accelerate brood development. Rather, foundresses normally join early-established nests so that multiple-foundress nests have an early start and thus produce workers early in the season.  相似文献

Intraspecific nest usurpation by foundresses was studied in 2 haplometrotic (solitary founding) species of different subgenera,Polistes (P.) riparius andP. (Polistella) snelleni, in areas where they cohabited. The overall probability for a nest to be usurped by a foreign foundress during the season was about twice as large inP. snelleni as inP. riparius. In both, however, probability of usurpation was largest on late pre-emergence nests, or in late June and early July. InP. riparius, all the usurpers of known origins were those foundresses that had lost their pre-emergence nests to destruction probably by some vertebrates; inP. snelleni, some usurpers had the same history as above, while the others had lost many of all larvae to predation by unknown agents before worker emergence. Usurpers of both species destroyed eggs and younger larvae to much greater extents than older larvae or pupae, and they produced fewer numbers of reproductives in comparison with non-usurping foundresses. We concluded that usurpation behavior has been maintained despite its relatively low productivity because renesting would lead to even lower or no reproductive production.  相似文献

In black cotton uplands in East Africa, four symbiotic acacia-ant species compete for possession of a single swollen thorn tree species, Acacia drepanolobium, and yet coexist at fine spatial scales. Three of the four ant species produce independent foundress queens that establish colonies claustrally within swollen thorns, most often on small saplings. We conducted surveys of such saplings at two sites in 2001 and 2004, and examined foundresses and incipient colonies within their swollen thorns to determine what factors influence their success. Competition among foundresses for nest initiation sites was intense, with an average of over one founding attempt per swollen thorn in all samples, and with living and dead queens significantly hyper-dispersed among available thorns. Combat with other foundresses was the most common cause of death among claustral queens, especially for Tetraponera penzigi. In interspecific battles for nest initiation sites, T. penzigi was dominant over Crematogaster nigriceps and C. mimosae, and C. nigriceps won over 80% of its contests with C. mimosae foundresses. For singleton foundresses, brood parasitism by the braconid wasp Trigastrotheca laikipiensis typically results in the death of the entire ant brood. Host queens defend parasite larvae, pupae and eclosed adults, apparently unable to distinguish the wasps from legitimate offspring. Rates of brood parasitism were as high as 15–20% for incipient colonies of both Crematogaster species, but were extremely low for T. nigriceps in all samples. Although T. penzigi and C. nigriceps foundresses are always solitary, approximately 18% of claustral C. mimosae colonies contain cooperating pleometrotic queens. For unparasitized, claustral C. mimosae colonies, brood production per queen did not differ between solitary and cooperating foundresses. Summary During the late pre-emergence phase, a foundress of the paper waspPolistes biglumis bimaculatus may be expelled by a conspecific female from her own nest (usurpation) or, less frequently, joined by another female of the same species (late association). The behaviour of femalePolistes biglumis bimaculatus, when usurping a conspecific colony or joining another foundress, is compared with that of foundresses on non-usurped colonies. The most conspicous difference is the intense abdomen stroking behaviour the usurper performs over the comb surface on the first days after usurpation. As observed in otherPolistes species, once usurpers and joiners arrive on a strange nest they will destroy most of the immature brood of the previous nest owner. Although host workers are not aggressive towards the intruder females, reproductive success of usurpers and joiners is low compared with that of legitimate foundresses. The same behaviours observed on usurped colonies are found in the obligate social parasites ofPolistes. These behaviours are therefore discussed in the context of the evolution of intra- and inter-specific parasitism.  相似文献

The communicative meaning of an oscillation (lateral vibration) performed by foundresses of social wasps (Polistes fuscatus) was investigated by sampling larval saliva from 12 postworker, single-foundress colonies and by viewing videotapes of 17 multiple-foundress (139.3 h) and 16 single-foundress (32 h) preworker colonies. Foundresses spent significantly more time inspecting cells before performing a lateral vibration (LV) than after and commonly became inactive after performing an LV. The proportion of departures temporally proximate to LVs was significantly greater in single- than in multiple-foundress colonies. Departures and LVs were significantly temporally associated in single-foundress colonies. Single foundresses were significantly more likely to perform an LV prior to departing on longer than shorter trips. In multiple-foundress colonies there was a significant temporal relationship between LVs and departures that left the nest unattended. Larvae secreted significantly less saliva, a nutritious substance provided to adults, immediately after an LV than in the absence of an LV. Contextual evidence and results of sampling larval saliva indicate that LVs by foundresses signal larvae to withhold or reduce their secretion of saliva.  相似文献

Polistes atrimandibularis is the obligate and permanent parasite of the social paper wasp Polistes biglumis bimaculatus. This parasite lives together with the host foundress for a considerable period on the invaded nest. Ovarian development was measured in females of the host species (foundresses and, when present, workers) from 18 parasitized and 14 non-parasitized colonies. The reproductive capacity of foundresses from parasitized nests decreased faster than that of foundresses from non-parasitized nests. These results indicate that the presence of the parasite lowers reproductive capacity of the host queen. Simultaneously, the fertility of the host worker is inhibited.  相似文献

Paper wasps of the genus Polistes exhibit wide variability both of the color and size of foundresses, and the mode of colony foundation. The colony foundation and social hierarchy were studied in populations of two Palaearctic species, Polistes dominulus (Christ) and P. nimphus (Christ) (April–May 2006, the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine), and one Neotropical species, P. lanio (F.) (October 2004–January 2005, Trinidad Island). It was shown that foundresses of various color and size morphs tended to found nests in a peculiar way: singly (haplometrosis), by groups (pleometrosis), or occupying several nests simultaneously (polycaly). The relationship between coloration, size, and mode of colony foundation was species-specific. P. dominulus foundresses with a darker clypeus and a paler mesonotum preferred to found nests alone and had a dominant position in pleometrosis. The haplometrotic P. nimphus foundresses more often displayed darker variants of the clypeus and paler variants of the mesonotum than did foundresses from pleometrotic colonies. P. lanio foundresses from pleometrotic colonies differed from those from polycalic colonies in the coloration variability of the scutum, propodeum, and the 2nd metasomal tergite. The dominant and subordinate P. nimphus and P. lanio foundresses differed in the size of head and wings. The possible significance of the subdivision of foundresses into the “generalists” and “specialists” for the variability structuring in the population is considered.  相似文献

The allocation pattern of proteinaceous resources was estimated in preemergence colonies of Polistes chinensis. Foundresses that nested at exposed sites consumed a larger relative amount of proteinaceous resources to produce oral secretion, which is used for construction and maintenance of nests, than those at sheltered sites. Numbers of immatures reared by foundresses were smaller in exposed nests than those in sheltered ones, and further, workers that emerged from exposed nests were significantly smaller in size than those from sheltered ones. Foundresses had to partition available proteinaceous resources not only among the first batch of the brood but also, before that, between brood nourishment and secretion production in response to given environmental conditions. LikeApis cerana colonies,A. mellifera colonies also show removal response toVarroa-infested brood cells. Infested worker brood cells of artificially and naturally infested combs were detected by the worker bees to various degrees in all types of comb-material used.The bees uncap brood cells and remove larvae or pupae infested with one or two mites. The removal response of worker bees was stronger towards brood cells containing two mites than cells with one mite.The specific signals which cause the removal of brood cells infested withVarroa mites are unknown. Removal response toVarroa-infested brood cells in plastic comb-material (Jenter-and ANP-comb) was significantly higher than to brood in wax combs. Up to now we do not know to what extent this tolerance mechanism is influenced by genetic and environmental factors.Our experiments comparing the removal of freeze-killed brood with the removal of brood infested withVarroa mites demonstrate positive correlations. Considering the time-consuming method of the artificial infestation with living mites, the hygienic behaviour-including the removal of brood cells infested with mites-of large series of colonies can be tested using freeze-killed brood.  相似文献

In primitively eusocial insects, air temperature is the environmental factor that primarily affects colony cycle. Several studies demonstrated interspecific differences in the adaptation of eusocial insects to local air temperature. Nevertheless, studies on intraspecific adaptations are rare. In this study, we investigate the influence of air temperature on local adaptations in behavior and colony productivity of Polistes biglumis foundresses living in warm and cold temperate zones. We hypothesized that foundresses from warm temperate zones would show a higher activity level compared to those from cold temperate zones before brood emergence, based on differences in air temperature between the two zones. After brood emergence, we expected a reduced foundress activity level in the warm climate zone, due to workers’ help. In contrast, foundresses living in the cold-climate zone, which do not produce workers, were expected to remain active throughout the nesting season. We also hypothesized that colony productivity was higher in warm-climate colonies. As expected, warm-climate foundresses reduced their activity level after brood emergence and, with their relatively large number of workers, continued egg production throughout the nesting season. Further studies are necessary to assess if these intraspecific differences are attributable to phenotypic plasticity or genetic divergence.  相似文献

Only two out of 959 pre‐emergence colonies of the paper wasp Polistes snelleni de Saussure surveyed between 1989 and 1996 in Sapporo, northern Japan, were found to be two‐foundress colonies, and the others were single‐foundress colonies. The two foundresses in one of the two colonies showed neither aggressive dominance behavior nor clear division of labor between them during a total of approximately 30 h in the first half of the pre‐emergence stage. Summary Starting colonies of the desert seed-harvester antMessor pergandei are clumped in the field and face severe intraspecific competition through brood raiding. Single foundress laboratory colonies ofM. pergandei are more likely to succeed at brood raiding with conspecific colonies if they are given additional workers and mature pupae several days prior to brood raiding. Per foundress fecundity remains constant across laboratory starting colonies established with 1, 3 and 5 foundresses. These results suggest that the selective advantage of cooperative colony foundation (pleometrosis) in this and similar species may derive directly from the ability of multiple foundresses to produce a larger brood raiding force.  相似文献

Some metric characters of nests built during the founding phase by foundresses were compared between two consubgenericPolistes wasps,P. (Polistes) riparius andP. (P.) chinensis, the former of which inhabit higher latitudes. Volumes and dry weights ofP. riparius nests were strikingly larger than those ofP. chinensis, even when standardized by the foundress weight (2.5 times for volume and 2 times for weight), showing that foundresses ofP. riparius invest much more in the nest construction than those ofP. chinensis. However, percent weights of oral secretion used for nests to total nest weights were smaller inP. riparius than inP. chinensis (52.1% vs. 60.4%). The differences in the investment by foundresses of the two species in the construction and maintenance of nests were discussed in relation to climatic and other environmental factors.  相似文献

The mites Sphexicozela connivens infesting the larvae of the future foundresses of Polistes nimpha have been shown to affect their size and the melanin pattern of some body parts. Foundresses reared in the infested environment have shorter wings and paler variants of metasomal sternite IV. The relationship between reproductive status and body size in foundresses of Ropalidia plebeiana, an Australian endemic paper wasp forming huge aggregations of nests, was examined. Foundresses with developed ovaries (laying foundresses) in multifoundress colonies tended to be larger than foundresses in single‐foundress colonies and foundresses with undeveloped ovaries (non‐laying foundresses). However, the laying foundress was not always the largest of the foundresses in a colony. Summary Foundresses of two species of Japanese paper wasps,Polistes chinensis antennalis andP. jadwigae, attacked other colonies of the same species. A foundress ofP. chinensis antennalis visited two nests of the same species, and ate larvae from them, while two foundresses ofP. jadwigae each visited a nest of the same species, eating larvae and pupae even when the foundress of the attacked nest was on her nest. In addition, a foundress ofP. jadwigae distributed flesh balls thus obtained among their larvae. Discussion was made on the adaptive significance of the inter-colonial cannibalism.
