Spatial and seasonal variation in macrozoobenthic composition, abundance and diversity in Aiba Reservoir were investigated bimonthy between June 2004 and April 2005 using a van Veen grab. A depauperate fauna of nine taxa was recorded. Generally, larger numbers of taxa were recorded during the dry season than in the wet season. Melanoides tuberculata and chironomid larvae dominated the macrozoobenthos and showed wide spatial distribution. Diversity and evenness were lower during the wet season than in the dry season, when densities of the major species were low. Melanoides tuberculata and chironomid larvae were recorded from maximum depths of 3.9 m and 2.6 m, respectively. Both taxa were also recorded from all substrate texture types, regardless of the amount of macrophyte material present. The Moor House Nature Reserve, Westmorland, is situated in typical north Pennine moorland and experiences a rigorous climate. Three of the streams arise between 700 and 750 m O.D. and the fourth at 590 m O.D. The sampling sites lie between 570 and 540 m O.D. and conditions in the streams range from slow-flowing peaty-bottomed reaches to typical fast-flowing stony streams. Samples were taken in riffles and pools in May, August and October using the kick method. 111 taxa were recorded from the four streams, 90 of which were identified to the species level. The most abundant and widespread taxa were Leuctra inermis, L. fusca, Rhithrogena semicolorata, Elmis aenea and Chironomidae. Seasonal and annual variation in abundance of several species was marked with L. inermis most numerous in May, E. aenea and Chironomidae in August and R. semicolorata most abundant in October. The total number of animals caught was generally higher in riffles than in pools and the mean number per 60-sec kick for riffles and pools, based on May, August and October samples between 1967 and 1970, ranged from 110 to 128 in the four streams. Capnia bifrons, Paraleptophlebia submarginata, P. cincta, Leptophlebia marginata, Centroptilum pennulatum, Plectrocnemia geniculata, Cyrnus trimaculatus, Lepidostoma hirtum, Hydropsychidae (larvae indet.) and Philopotamidae (larvae indet.), are all additions to the lists of previously studied groups on the Reserve. All the species of Tricladida, Annelida, Coleoptera, Hydrachnellae and Pisidium are here recorded for the first time for the Reserve. Great Dodgen Pot Sike supported the largest number of species and species groups (88) and was characterized by having water with the lowest pH (6.75) of all the streams and by having the most gentle gradient and a relatively stable bottom. The fauna is discussed and compared with that of the adjacent Cow Green area. Some of the differences between these areas may be attributable to the slightly greater variation in flow-conditions and water chemistry in the Cow Green basin. Comparison with other areas in the British Isles are made briefly and it is suggested that habitat diversity may account for the species richness of the Moor House streams.  相似文献

Abstract

Three endemic taxa of Cominella Gray are recorded from the Three Kings Islands, New Zealand. Cominella (Josepha) regalis n.sp. and C. (Josepha) quoyana griseicalx n.ssp. occur sympatrically in relatively shallow water (to c.50m), whereas C. (Eucominia) mirabilis mirabilis Powell is known only from c.180m. The history of colonisation by these taxa is hypothesised and discussed.  相似文献

The distribution, abundance and standing crop biomass of chironomid larvae were determined at one-meter depth intervals along three radial transects. Samples were collected by coring soft sediments while diving. Three genera were found in the lake: Chironomus sp. (collector-filtering larvae), Ablabesmyia sp. (predatory larvae) and Goeldichironomus sp. (collector-filtering larvae). Standing crop densities of chironomids, averaged over the entire lake, varied from 30,594 larvae/m2 to 11,428 larvae/m2 at different depths. No statistically significant zonation in density was found for the two most common taxa, Chironomus sp. (87.8% of specimens) and Ablabesmyia sp. (9.0%), however the deepest zones (>4 m) had the lowest estimated densities. Significant differences in standing crop biomass were detected, with the 6 m depth having greatest biomass. The increase in standing crop biomass was a function of (1) lower frequency of first instars of Chironomus sp. and Ablabesmyia sp. at 6 m (2) higher average larval biomass of both species at 6 m and (3) very significant increase in average biomass of fourth instars of Chironomus sp. at 6 m compared to fourth instars at shallower depths. These results indicate that the lentic chironomids of this isolated oceanic habitat consist of a small number of species that are ecological generalists and tolerant of low oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

Seventy-three taxa of silica-scaled chrysophytes were found with LM and TEM in 264 samples from 141 Finnish water bodies, including the genera Mallomonas (40 taxa), Synura (9), Chrysosphaerella (3), Spiniferomonas (8) and Paraphysomonas (13). More than half of the taxa are recorded for the first time from Finland and five (Mallomonas actinoloma v. actinoloma, M. favosa, M. mangofera f. gracilis, M. scrobiculata and Spiniferomonas serrata) are new to Europe. Most taxa are illustrated with TEM micrographs and the taxonomy of some interesting species is discussed in detail. The seasonal occurrence of the commonest species is described.  相似文献

Results of the first long-term investigation of the profundal chironomid fauna of Starnberger See, a prealpine lake are reported. Data are presented on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the chironomid fauna in the profundal of Starnberger See, on the spatial variation, and on the phenology of the dominant species, based on pupal occurrence and the seasonal distribution of larval instars. Twenty-five distinct chironomid taxa could be recorded in the profundal zone. Typical inhabitants of the profundal zone of Starnberger See are the larvae of the genus Micropsectra. The maximum abundance of Micropsectra larvae were found at 60 m with 5644 Ind.m−2. Abundance, distribution and phenology of the dominant chironomid species are discussed in comparison with other lakes.  相似文献

1. The objective was to determine the time spent in the drift by different taxa of stream invertebrates. Most data were obtained from an earlier experimental study to determine the distances travelled by drifting invertebrates of 16 taxa in Wilfin Beck. Experiments were performed at two sites: ‘site 4’ in a stony, fast‐flowing, section of stream, ‘site 3’ in a deeper stream section where macrophytes were abundant. 2. The significant relationship between the mean distance x (m) travelled in the drift and modal water velocity V (m s?1) was described by a power function in the earlier study but, as the power was close to one, a linear relationship has now been found to provide a satisfactory model. The rate of increase in x (m) with increasing V varied considerably between taxa. The mean time [mean t (s)] spent in the drift was estimated by dividing each x (m) by the appropriate V. Mean t (s) for each taxon was usually very constant over a wide range of V at each site (0.10–0.60 m s?1 at site 4, 0.15–0.53 m s?1 at site 3). A simple model estimated the time spent in the drift by different percentages (e.g. 75, 50, 10 and 1%) of the drifting invertebrates. 3. The experimental taxa at site 4 were divided into three groups according to the mean time spent in the drift. Mean t (s) for the five taxa in group 1 (32.8 s) was not significantly different from that obtained in control experiments with a mixed group of dead invertebrates. A similar time (33.0 s) was obtained for the five taxa in group 2, except at water velocities less than 0.2 m s?1 when the mean t (s) decreased to 15–21 s. Mean t (s) was constant for each of the six taxa in group 3, and significantly less than that for groups 1 and 2. Mean values ranged from 28.8 s for Ephemerella ignita to only 9.4 s for Baetis rhodani and Gammarus pulex. All mean values were lower at site 3, presumably because of the dense stands of macrophytes, with mean values of 12.9 s for the five taxa in group 1 (equalling the value for dead invertebrates). Mean values for the six remaining taxa varied from 6.4 s for Simulium spp. to only 4.9 s for Baetis rhodani and 4.8 s for Gammarus pulex. It was concluded from a discussion of this study that the time spent in the drift may provide a useful measure for comparing the downstream dispersal of invertebrates in different streams, and may be a useful addition to models for the drift feeding of salmonids.  相似文献

Two new species of Camillea are described from localities on an east–west transect through Ecuador between the latitudes 1°00’N and 1°00’S. Camillea ovalispora was collected in San Vicente de Huaticocha, an area characterized as humid lowland rainforest and premontane cloud forest; C. unistoma was collected at Cuyabeno, a protected area with black water inundated forest and primary rainforest on terra firme. Further, C. heterostoma var. macrospora is elevated to full species status as C. macrospora. New country records of six Camillea species are annotated from the same east-west transect. These are C. flosculosa, C. fossulata, C. hainesii, C. macrospora, C. scriblita, and C. tinctor. Also, previously recorded species have been annotated with new specimens added. Additionally, six distinct taxa from the transect that appear to be undescribed were included in the analysis; one is partly described but not the others due to insufficient material. The data showed an obvious altitude influence on the distribution and frequency of Camillea species. The diversity of species is lower on the western part of the transect compared to the eastern side, probably due to multiple factors such as differences in search intensity between the two slopes, difference in annual rainfall, and possibly the availability of host plants. Camillea taxa were only found at altitudes below 2,000 m, with the highest diversity below 600 m. Palmae is reported as a new host for Camillea species.  相似文献

The aquatic larvae of two simuliid species, Austrosimulium furiosum (Skuse) and Simulium ornatipes Skuse, which often occur together in Victorian streams, were shown in laboratory experiments to have preferences for different water velocities: larvae of A. furiosum preferred water velocities of 0.2–0.3 m s–1, and S. ornatipes preferred water velocities of 0.9–1.3 m s –1 . Final instar larvae of both species selected slow water speeds of less than 0.25 m s –1 prior to pupation. Flow patterns around a cylinder in a laboratory stream were mapped, and the distribution of A. furiosum larvae within the wake, paired vortices and horseshoe vortex was recorded. Larvae selected areas with suitable water velocities and aligned with the flow, providing flow visualization of micro-current speed and direction. The potential for micro-habitat partitioning is discussed in relation to benthic sampling strategies.  相似文献

Data are given on net precipitation, water chemistry, vegetation cover and the population dynamics of 20 taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates from the total of 40 recorded ln the lake. The relationships between data sets were investigated by bivariate analysis. The relationships between abiotic factors are best described by linear equations as are some relationships between Sigara concinna, Sigara dorsalis, Potamopyrgus jenkinsi and environmental factors. The relationships of numbers of Gammarus tigrinus with temperature, Sigara stagnalis with conductivity, Corixidae with time and Sigara lateralis, Theromyzon tessulatum and Piscicola geometra with vegetation cover are best described by exponential equations. The relationships between the population dynamics of pairs of certain taxa viz. Gammarus tigrinus and G. duebeni, G. tigrinus and Asellus aquaticus, G. tigrinus and Corixidae, Sigara dorsalis and S. concinna, are best described by power equations. The relationship of vegetation cover with time and the population dynamics of many taxa are best described by logarithmic logistic equations.Both density dependent and density independent relationships appear to be responsible for changes in numbers and taxa within the total community. Density independent relationships are most important at times of environmental change while density dependent relationships, though operating continuously, are most important when conditions are stable.  相似文献

Svalbard bryozoan communities were investigated along a depth range from the surface to 296 m between the inner glacial fronts and fjord mouths during 2001 and 2002. The main study area was Kongsfjorden (79°N, 12°E). A total of 137 taxa of bryozoans were identified: 108 to species, 24 to genus, 3 to family, 1 to order and 1 to phylum level. Cluster and multidimensional scaling analyses revealed four distinct assemblages of bryozoans: shallow (0–40 m; 68 taxa), deep (40–296 m; 80 taxa), inner fjordic (three taxa) and an assemblage found on small stones in shallow waters (nine taxa). The inner fjordic assemblage was recorded from the front of tidal glaciers extending about 10 km out into the fjord. In terms of abundance, Celleporella hyalina Linnaeus dominated in shallow areas (18%), Hippothoa arctica Kluge (55%) in deep water, Alcyonidium disciforme Smitt (86%) proximate to glaciers fronts and Electra arctica Borg on small stones (98%). The species were classified according to their depth range as a stenobathic-shallow (46 taxa), stenobathic-deep (57 taxa) and eurybathic-generalist (21 taxa). Mean diversity measures did not show any significant differences between the shallow and deep communities. The bryozoan assemblages seem to be structured primarily by processes related to depth and sediment characteristics.  相似文献

Highly specific environmental factors such as the presence of strongly mineralized water, oxygenation of the water down to 10 m, a low trophic status of the water and low organic matter content in the bottom sediments, were found in the studied post-exploitation Lake Piaseczno. Of the 42 macroinvertebrate taxa found, Oligochaeta (Tubificidae) and Chironomidae predominated. Almost exclusively ubiquitous species were found, except for some chironomid taxa recorded for the first time in Poland. The most diversified faunal communities occurred at 1 m water depth whereas the highest densities were found at 5 m. At the deepest points studied only oligochaetes and Chaoborus flavicans were found. There was no correlation between organic matter content and macrofauna densities. Differences in inhabitation at the studied transects could result from various environmental factors such as the degree of macrophyte cover and protection from the wind. Undisturbed transects overgrown by macrophytes had a similar community composition and higher faunal densities than those which were less protected.  相似文献

Chironomid communities of mosses in a small upland stream in central Germany were highly dynamic across the year with respect to their abundance, biomass and dominant taxa. During 1988 semi-submersed mosses near a main spring and those occurring some 700 m downstream were compared with permanently submersed mosses in immediate vicinity of the downstream site. All the chironomids sampled were conspicuously small, with nearly 98% being less than 5 mm in length. A total of 65 chironomid species from 26 genera were found, with a higher diversity occurring near the source and a change in dominant taxa along the upper stream section. The mean abundance in permanently submersed mosses (250 larvae/10 cm2, n = 125) was about five times higher than in semi-submersed mosses. The maximum value of 830 larvae/10 cm2 (n = 1) is the highest chironomid density ever reported, which is explained by the sampling method used. The mean standing crop was also highest in permanently submersed mosses (1.5 mg AFDW/10 cm2 (n = 125)), even though the highest individual value was recorded in semi-submersed mosses near the spring (10.4 mg AFDW/10 cm2). The evidence suggested that the dominance of chironomid taxa depended mainly on the location of the moss along the stream, whereas abundance and biomass were determined mainly by constancy in the ambient discharge as well as the factors influenced by this (e.g. temperature, detritus deposition). A trend was seen towards a seasonal succession among the chironomid taxa colonizing lotic mosses.  相似文献

Summary

The present study examined the composition, abundance and seasonality of fish larvae occurring in Richards Bay Harbour, over an 18-month period from June 1991 to November 1992. Ichthyoplankton samples were collected every six weeks at top, mid and bottom depths in the dredged channel 100 to 200 m from the harbour entrance. A total of 7 163 fish larvae, representing 105 taxa and 53 families, was collected throughout the study period. The dominant families were the Engraulidae and Gobiidae representing 50% and 37% of the total catch, respectively. The most abundant larvae were those of the thorny anchovy, Stolephorus holodon, and an unidentified goby, Gobiid 12 (32% and 30% of the total catch, respectively). Estuarine-associated taxa dominated the total catch in terms of density (61%), with 11 out of the 28 taxa being totally dependent on estuaries at some stage in their life cycle. Turbidity and temperature were significant variables accounting for 27% of the variation in larval densities of estuarine-dependent species. The main peak in larval density occurred in January 1992 (summer) with a mean larval density of 160 larvae per 100 m3. Larvae of estuarine-associated taxa were predominantly at the flexion and postflexion developmental stages. Since larval densities of certain estuarine-associated species were significantly greater in bottom samples and on flood tides, it is suggested that selective tidal stream transport is a recruitment mechanism used by these species. The present study concluded that it is important to maintain and preserve the estuarine component of Richards Bay Harbour so that the system can function as an estuarine nursery for many of the fish species depending on it at certain stages in their life cycle.  相似文献

Abstract

The genus Maoricicada Dugdale, 1972 includes 19 taxa, of which 15 are described here. Ten from the South Island mountains are described as new: M. alticola, M. clamitans, M. mangu gourlayi, M. m. multicostata, M. m. celer, M. nigra frigida, M. otagoensis otagoensis, M. o. maceweni, M. phaeoptera, and M. tenuis. The distributions of most taxa are mapped, their songs are represented by sonograms, and their known periods of emergence are recorded. Evidence of hybridisation is unknown. Most species are characteristic of open, unforested sites; M. nigra nigra and M. oromelaena occur close to the summer snowline, a zone not known to be inhabited by cicadas elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the species composition and distribution of fish larvae in relation to hydrographic conditions in the waters surrounding Taiwan Island (TI) in February 2003. In total, 242 kinds of fish larvae belonging to 127 genera and 75 families were recognized. Among these, 109 taxa were identified to the family or genus level, others to the species level. The 12 predominant types, which constituted 71% of the total fish larvae, were Engraulis japonica, Scomber sp., Diaphus spp., Benthosema pterotum, Carangoides ferdau, Embolichthys mitsukurii, Maurolicus sp., unidentified Myctophidae, Gonostoma gracile, Trichiurus lepturus, unidentified Gobiidae, and Myctophum asperum. The distribution of fish larvae showed a clear association with water masses around TI, with higher abundances and lower species richness northwest of TI where the China Coastal Current prevails, and lower abundances and higher species diversity east of TI where the Kuroshio Current dominates. Cluster analysis distinguished three station groups and four species groups, and the distribution patterns of fish larvae also corresponded to hydrographic conditions. The total abundances of fish larvae and eight of the 12 predominant taxa showed significant and positive correlations with zooplankton abundance, which suggests that food source might be a key factor determining the abundance and distribution of fish larvae during the winter.  相似文献

Nocturnal predators are often overlooked in biological control studies, despite evidence that they can make important contributions to insect pest suppression in agroecosystems. Many sampling methods are only employed during the daytime hours due to limitations of time and labour. Additionally, different sampling methods can provide contrasting information about natural enemy community composition and relative abundance. Here, we use Aphis glycines and its arthropod predators as a model system to compare natural enemy community composition described by vacuum samples, direct observations and video observations across the diel cycle in soybean. All sampling methods identified several common taxa. Anthocorids were dominant in vacuum samples and direct observations, and both methods indicated that this taxa may be more active in the afternoon. In contrast, anthocorids were recorded infrequently on video, possibly due to their small size. On video samples, lacewing larvae were the most active taxa during the day and lacewing larvae, spiders, opiliones and carabids were the most active taxa at night. We directly observed 22 predation events on soybean aphid: 17 by anthocorids, two by chrysopid larvae, and one each by a coccinellid, spider and predatory mite. The differences between the sample methods suggest that vacuum samples may represent predator abundance more accurately, while video data may miss small predators, but can be used to better assess relative time spent foraging.  相似文献

Aim Anthropogenic climate change is expected to result in the complete loss of glaciers from the high mountains of tropical Africa, with profound impacts on the hydrology and ecology of unique tropical cold‐water lakes located downstream from them. This study examines the biodiversity of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) communities in these scarce Afroalpine lake systems, in order to determine their uniqueness in relation to lowland African lakes and alpine lakes in temperate regions, and to evaluate the potential of Afroalpine Chironomidae as biological indicators to monitor future changes in the ecological integrity of their habitat. Location Mount Kenya (Kenya) and Rwenzori Mountains (Uganda). Methods The species composition of Afroalpine chironomid communities was assessed using recent larval death assemblages extracted from the surface sediments of 11 high‐mountain lakes between 2900 and 4575 m. Results were compared with similar faunal data from 68 East African lakes at low and middle elevation (750–2760 m), and with literature records of Chironomidae species distribution in sub‐Saharan Africa, the Palaearctic region and elsewhere. All recovered taxa were fully described and illustrated. Results The 11‐lake analysis yielded 1744 subfossil chironomid larvae belonging to 16 distinct taxa of full‐grown larvae, and three taxa of less differentiated juveniles. Eleven of these 16 are not known to occur in African lakes at lower elevation, and eight taxa (or 50% of total species richness) appear restricted to the specific habitat of cold lakes above 3900 m, where night‐time freezing is frequent year‐round. The faunal transition zone coincides broadly with the Ericaceous zone of terrestrial vegetation (c. 3000–4000 m). Snowline depression during the Quaternary ice ages must have facilitated dispersion of cold‐stenothermous species among the high mountains of equatorial East Africa, but less so from or to the Palaearctic region via the Ethiopian highlands. Main conclusions Chironomid communities in glacier‐fed lakes on Africa's highest mountains are highly distinct from those of lowland African lakes, and potentially unique on a continental scale. By virtue of excellent preservation and their spatial and temporal integration of local community dynamics, chironomid larval death assemblages extracted from surface sediments are powerful biological indicators for monitoring the hydrological and ecological changes associated with the current retreat and loss of Africa's glaciers.  相似文献

In all 155 specimens of the high Arctic codfish Arctogadus glacialis examined for metazoan parasites, 55 specimens were from southern and northern Baffin Bay, western Greenland, and 100 specimens from north-eastern Greenland and Scoresby Sound. A total of 20 parasite taxa were recorded. A new myxozoan Gadimyxa arctica was found in southern Baffin Bay and Scoresby Sound. The gadid myxozoan Zschokkella hildae, the digeneans Gonocerca phycidis and Lecithaster gibbosus, the gill copepod Haemobaphes cyclopterina and third-stage larvae of the nematodes Anisakis simplex and Hysterothylacium aduncum were found in Scoresby Sound only. The digenean Hemiurus levinseni and third-stage larvae of the nematode Contracaecum sp. were found at all four stations. The nematodes Ascarophis spp. were found at three stations. The parasite fauna of A. glacialis from Scoresby Sound was very similar to that of 50 specimens of the closely related Boreogadus saida from the same area.  相似文献
