In the Azorean rock-pool blenny (Parablennius parvicornis) reproductively active males display alternative morphotypes, which differ in the expression of secondary sexual characters (SSC). Males expressing SSC, the M+ morphotype, have high androgen levels and compete for crevices that will be visited by females to spawn. M+ males holding nests court females and care for the eggs. Males with low expression of SSC, the M- morphotype, have low levels of androgens and reproduce by stealing fertilizations from the M+ males. Based on the hypothesis that androgens are immunosuppressive, we expected these morphotypes to differ in immunocompetence. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a field study in which we collected repeated blood samples to monitor leukocyte populations (blood smears), and to measure the primary antibody response of males that were experimentally challenged with a foreign non-pathogenic antigen (sheep red blood cells). Circulating levels of 11-ketotestosterone and testosterone were higher in M+ males than in M- males. Neither granulocyte nor thrombocyte counts did covariate with androgens or male tactic. In contrast, lymphocyte counts and humoral antibody response were negatively correlated with body size, and as expected, both were lower in M+ than in M- males. Interestingly, in M+ males androgen levels decreased after immunization, and this was less in nest-holder males than in M+ males that were floating around in the pools. Within each morphotype we found no relationship between androgens and immunocompetence. The latter result is not supportive for androgen regulated immunosuppression in M+ males. A possible alternative is enhancement of immunity in M- males. These males had relatively high levels of injuries in comparison with M+ males. High immunity might be a consequence of high infection rate because of such injuries. 相似文献

Androgen hormones have been shown to facilitate competitive ability in courtship and territorial behavior, while suppressing paternal behavior. The rock-pool blenny, Parablennius parvicornis, provides an excellent model to study the proximate regulation of such a trade-off between territorial and parental behavior, because nest-holder males of this species display these behaviors simultaneously. A field study was carried out in which territorial nest holder males were either treated with long-lasting implants filled with 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) or with control implants. Males treated with 11-KT showed a higher frequency of aggressive behavior, were more responsive to aggressive challenges, and were more persistent in aggressive behavior than control males. In addition, territories were larger in males treated with 11-KT than in controls. We found evidence for incompatibility between defense of a large territory and high levels of parental behavior. However, contrary to expectation, 11-KT did not suppress parental behavior. We suggest that trade-offs between territorial and parental behavior may not be regulated by androgen hormones but may result from a time constraint in the individual's activity budget. 相似文献

Much attention has been paid to the polyterritorial mating system of some passerine birds. Here we report how a male's mating success is related to the behavioral traits of polyterritorial pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) males. We found no evidence that the timing of polyterritoriality in relation to egg laying in the primary nest or the singing behavior of males have any influence on mating success. However, results show clearly that male mating success was improved with an increase in the distance between territories up to a distance of about 200–300 m whereupon there was no further enhancement of mating success. This finding is crucial for both the deception hypothesis and female-female aggression hypothesis which have been put forward to explain polyterritorial polygyny. Males who establish a distant second territory seemed to allocate more time to singing there. The association, although weak, between singing activity and distance between territories makes it more difficult for females to use song rate as a cue to discriminate males with a secondary territory far from the primary territory, and these are the males that are least likely to feed the young of a second female. Males who established a second territory late in relation to egg laying in the primary nest did not take over a close second territory as might be predicted from female-female aggression hypothesis. 相似文献

Female mate preference for males tending young offspring has been demonstrated in many fishes; however, not much is known about the choice process. Using the barred chin blenny Rhabdoblennius ellipes, a fish with male uniparental care, field experiments were conducted to investigate the female preference for males tending young eggs and then whether females choose the males with young eggs by discriminating young eggs from old eggs in the nests. Males tending young eggs (0‐ to 2‐d old) acquired new eggs nine times more frequently than those tending old eggs (3‐ to 5‐d old) regardless of other traits in males and nests. In the two egg‐switching field experiments (old to young and young to old), contrary to our expectation, male mating success was neither enhanced when given young eggs nor inhibited when given old eggs. These results suggested that females choose males with young eggs not by discriminating the developmental stage of eggs in the nests but by using other choice processes. By choosing males with young eggs, females may benefit from the dilution effects of egg predation and filial cannibalism risks and avoid male parental care failure. 相似文献

The attractiveness and the mating success of fertile (normal and brownie, br) and sterile (rudimentary testis, rt) Drosophila montana males were studied in female-choice experiments (one female + two males). The normal males courted the sterile rt males nearly as much as they courted the females, while they courted other males less frequently. The females required a long courtship with the rt males and accepted them as their mating partner less often than normal males. The courtship behaviour of normal, br and rt males was recorded in single pair situations with a normal female. The courtships of the males of all types proceeded in a similar manner, but the successful courtships of the rt males included more licking and touching than those of the normal and br males. The licking and touching periods are probably the critical phases at which the females are able to detect differences in male fertility. 相似文献

Drosophila biarmipes males possess an apical black patch on their wings. In a laboratory stock of this species, males without such a patch have been found. Mating success of these two types of male was studied in an Elcns-Wattiaux mating chamber. Results show that males possessing the dark black patch have greater mating success than those without. This finding suggests that visual stimulus plays an important role in the mating behaviour of D. biarmipes. 相似文献

Dahlia cuttings with actively growing buds are relatively hard to root as compared with those having non-growing or inhibited buds. In cuttings containing buds which sprouted during the rooting period, an inverse relationship was found between rooting percentage and growth rate of buds. Reproductive buds suppress rooting more than vegetative ones. Removing the growing terminal, parts of the cuttings (vegetative or reproductive) increased rooting percentage of cuttings. It is suggested that growing buds may affect rooting of cuttings in two opposed directions. The first is inhibition of rooting by competing with the roots for metabolites and the second is promotion of rooting by enhancing cambial activity. 相似文献

The mating success of individually marked male damselflies parasitized by water mites was closely followed. The number of ectoparasites could be determined exactly from knowledge of the parasite's life cycle. In contrast to previous studies, no correlation between water mite infestation and male mating success was revealed. The reasons for this discrepancy may be explained by the inclusion of the parasite's behavior. The body fat content of the males was negatively correlated with the mite load, indicating that parasitism reduces host's condition. It is hypothesised that the water mites damselfly system is not valuable for testing the Hamilton and Zuk hypothesis. Furthermore, selection exerted or mediated by parasites should act during the teneral phase. 相似文献

Although female remating has been studied extensively in insects, few studies have been carried out for male remating (second mating). In this study, we analyzed Drosophila melanogaster males for their remating potential, using iso‐female line culture initiated with wild flies collected from eight Indian geographic localities. We examined the association of latitude and percent melanization with first and second male mating (including mating‐related traits). Our results indicated that second male mating has a negative latitudinal cline opposite to that of first mating. Body melanization is negatively correlated with second mating by male and positively with first mating (measured in terms of percent mated pairs). Mating latency during first (ML1) and second (ML2) male mating has a negative latitudinal cline, but slope values differ significantly as ML2 is great at higher latitudes as compared to ML1. The difference between ML1 and ML2 is non‐significant at lower latitudes. However, copulation period of second mating (CP2) has a negative latitudinal cline, whereas copulation period of first mating (CP1) has positive latitudinal cline. Next, the latency and copulation period differ significantly between first and second male mating treatments in within‐population analyses as well as in melanic strains. Furthermore, male remating ability (number of maximum successful remating attempts continuously by a male in 12 h) also follows negative latitudinal cline. The lower latitudinal lighter males have more remating ability as compared to darker males from higher latitudes. 相似文献

We conducted an experiment in the Beijing Milu Park to study the social behavior of male Père David's deer, and related social behavior to social position and serum testosterone level of the stags during rut. We classified the stags into three rank classes according to their rutting behavior: ‘harem master’, ‘challenger’ and ‘bachelor’. We monitored the behaviors of four ‘harem masters’, five ‘challengers’ and five ‘bachelors’, and analyzed serum testosterone levels in blood samples of those 14 stags using radioimmunoassay. We defined the effectiveness value, E = A/T, to assess the effectiveness of herding or mating attempts made by stags (‘T’ represents the frequency of herding or mating attempts made by a stag and ‘A’ represents the frequency of herding or mating attempts accepted by hinds). We found that: (1) the ‘harem masters’ and the ‘challengers’ displayed more frequent rut and locomotive behaviors but fewer ingestion behaviors than the ‘bachelors’; (2) serum testosterone levels in the ‘harem masters’ and the ‘challengers’ were higher than that in the ‘bachelors’; (3) effectiveness value of herding attempts differed significantly between the three types of stags, being highest in the ‘harem masters’ and the lowest in the ‘bachelors’; and (4) effectiveness value of mating attempts was significantly greater for the ‘harem masters’ than for the ‘challengers’. We conclude that: (1) reproductive behavior of the Père David's deer stags is strongly associated with social rank; (2) social roles of Père David's deer stags during the rut are related to the testosterone secretion; and (3) rank class affects the mating opportunity of the stags. 相似文献

Young, small, sexually-inexperienced males suffer lower mating success than older, larger, more experienced males in many species of animals. I compared the mating success of male Desmognathus ochrophaeus (Amphibia: Caudata: Plethodontidae) reared to maturity in the laboratory with that of males collected as adults in the field. Courtship trials were staged in the laboratory between single males and females. Laboratory-reared males were significantly smaller in body size than adult males collected in the field, were certainly inexperienced sexually and were probably younger. No difference was found between laboratory-reared males and field-collected males in any measure of mating success, although the former apparently produced smaller sperm masses. I conclude that newly-mature male D. ochrophaeus are not discriminated against by females in the context of mate choice, and do not need to “rehearse” courtship in order to obtain successful inseminations. However, newly-mature males are probably at a disadvantage in terms of aggressive and sperm competition with larger males. 相似文献

Abstract Various horseradish peroxidase-conjugated lectins have been used for the ultrastructural localization of carbohydrate moieties of glycoconjugates on plasma membranes of the surface cells of Blennius sanguinolentus epidermis. Concanavalia ensiformis (Con A), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), Pisum sativum (PSA) and Ulex europaeus (UEA I) lectins bind only to the outermost plasma membranes, the glycocalyx and the intercellular spaces of the surface cells. Other lectins applied, such as Triticum vulgare (WGA), Glycine max (SBA) and Griffonia simplicifolia (GS I), presenting GlcNAc and GaINAc specificity, reacted with the plasma membranes of basolateral domains and gave an attenuated reaction with the outermost plasma membranes. The results suggest that regional differences exist in the distribution patterns of GlcNAc and GalNAc-terminating glycoconjugates. The possible implication of the polarized expression of these glycoconjugates in ion transport is discussed. 相似文献

Three closely related species of Drosophila: D. virilis, D. americana, and D. novamexicana, are known to differ in levels of male-male aggression. Through direct observation in the laboratory, we attempted to determine and characterize the relationships between intrasexual aggression and mating success in males of each of these species. Our results indicated that the most important determinant of male mating success was not the amount of aggression performed by a male, but rather the amount of aggression directed towards him. 相似文献

During courtship males often communicate information about their fitness to females. The matching of harmonic components of flight tone in male-female pairs of flying mosquitoes, or harmonic convergence, was recently described. This behaviour occurs prior to mating and has been suggested to function in mate selection. We investigated the hypothesis that harmonic convergence is a component of mosquito courtship. A key prediction of this hypothesis is that harmonic convergence should provide information to potential mates about fitness benefits. We measured the effect of harmonic convergence behaviour on the direct and indirect benefits obtained by females. We found that the sons of pairs that converged at harmonic frequencies prior to mating had increased mating success and that these offspring were themselves more likely to converge prior to mating. These results suggest that males may be able to signal information about their genetic quality to females prior to mating and that this signal may be heritable. These findings are important for our understanding of mosquito behaviour and have applications in the control of mosquito-borne disease. This study also contributes to the study of male-female interactions and signal coevolution. 相似文献

While males are generally the low investing sex when it comes to offspring care, males of many species experience intense and persistent mating effort. Mating effort incurs a variety of costs which are expected to have non-negligible effects on fitness, as well as how reproductive tactics are selected and investment in mating activity is moderated over time. This special issue features contributions investigating the costs of male mating effort across primate species. Here, we place these exciting new works in context, addressing the specific types of mating effort expected for male primates and the significance of these costs for our understanding of primate life histories and socioecology. 相似文献

The influence of a conspecific competitor on male mating behavior was examined in a Madagascar hissing cockroach, Gromphadorhina portentosa. Previous studies have suggested that both male-male competition and female discrimination during courtship interactions may influence male mating success. Familiar pairs of males with a known social association were placed in an arena with a single virgin female and observed. As expected, subordinate males mated significantly less often than their dominant opponents. In pairs in which one male mated, dominant individuals limited the access of subordinates to females. Dominant males displayed an increased frequency and duration of interaction with the female. However, in pairs where both males remained unmated, the mating behavior of dominant and subordinate males did not differ significantly. As interactions progressed, as in the case of males that remained unmated, subordinate males gained increased access to the female. Mated males tended to be larger than their opponent although within a rank, males that mated were no larger than those that remained unmated. These results are discussed in light of the possible roles of male-male competition and female discrimination during courtship interactions. 相似文献
