Eight-day-old bean plants, grown in a nutrient solution, were sprayed with 10−5, 10−4, 10−3, and 10−2 M atrazine. The lipid changes in primary and trifoliate leaves were studied 6 d after the herbicide application. The atrazine treatment inhibited the growth of the trifoliate leaves, and decreased photosynthetic and transpiration rates, the stomatal conductance, and the total lipid content. Atrazine treatment increased 16:0 and 18:3 acids and decreased trans-3-hexadecenoic and 18:2 acids in the phospholipids. The herbicide also increased 16:0 and 18:1 acids in glycolipids and decreased 18:3 acid in monogalactosyl diacylglycerols and digalactosyl diacylglycerols. In most cases the marked changes in fatty acid composition of the main lipid classes were observed at 10−4 and 10−3 M atrazine. Submerged aquatic higher plants maintain acropetal water transport to the young leaves in active growth to satisfy their demand for nutrients and hormones derived from the roots. We here present the first measurements of hydraulic properties for a submerged plant, the monocotyledon Sparganium emersum Rehman. The hydraulic conductance per unit length, Kh, was measured in leaf segments without the leaf tip and shown to be greater in old, fully developed leaves (1.5 · 10−10 · m4 · MPa−1 · s−1) than in young leaves (1.0 · 10−10 · m4 · MPa−1 · s−1). In leaves with intact leaf tips, however, Kh was significantly greater in the youngest leaves, which suggests that the leaf tip with the hydathode influences resistance and thus flow. Microscopy confirmed that the hydathodal area, which is an apical opening, undergoes structural changes with leaf age; a matrix of microorganisms develops in the older leaves and probably restricts water flow by clogging the hydathodes. The leaf specific conductivity expressing transport capacity relative to the leaf area supplied, of S. emersum (0.1 · 10−8 to 9 · 10−8 · m2 MPa−1· s−1) was within the same range as for various species of terrestrial ferns, vines and trees. This finding does not support the traditional concept of functionally reduced vascular transport in Received: 15 July 1996 / Accepted: 30 November 1996  相似文献

The effect of thioglycolate-based depilatory lotions was studied on the in vitro passive and iontophoretic permeability of insulin through porcine epidermis and biophysical changes in the stratum corneum (SC) lipids and proteins. The porcine epidermis and Franz diffusion cells modified for iontophoresis were used for the in vitro transport studies. Cathodal iontophoresis was performed at 0.2 mA/cm2 current density. Resistance of the control- and depilatory-lotion-treated epidermis was determined according to Ohmslaw. Biophysical changes were studied on porcine SC before (control) and after treatment with the depilatory lotions using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Asymmetric (∼2915 cm−1) and symmetric (∼2848 cm−1) Carbon-Hydrogen (C-H) stretching absorbances were studied to estimate the extent of lipid extraction. Fourier self-deconvolution and second derivative procedures were applied to amide I band (1700–1600 cm−1) in order to estimate quantitatively the changes in the secondary structure of the SC protein. The passive permeability of insulin was significantly (P<.05) increased through depilatory-lotion-treated (ie, Better Off, Marzena, and Sally Hansen) epidermis in comparison to control. Iontophoresis significantly enhanced (P<.05) the permeability of insulin through depilatory-pretreated epidermis in comparison with the control epidermis. Further, we were able to achieve the desired flux of insulin (5.25 U/cm2/d) through Better Off-treated epidermis using 0.2 mA/cm2 current density and 100 U/mL donor concentration of insulin. The SC treated with depilatory lotions showed a decrease in peak areas of C-H stretching absorbances in comparison with untreated SC. Depilatory lotion treatment also decreased (P<.05) the epidermal resistance in comparison with the control epidermis. The decrease in the α-helix conformation and the increase in the random and turn structures were observed in the SC proteins due to depilatory lotion treatment. The changes in the secondary structure of proteins and lipid extraction from the SC are suggested as the cause of the decrease in the epidermal resistance and the increase in the passive and iontophoretic permeability of insulin through depilatory-pretreated epidermis in comparison with the control epidermis.  相似文献

The morphological, anatomical and physiological variations of leaf traits were analysed during Quercus ilex L. leaf expansion. The leaf water content (LWC), leaf area relative growth rate (RGRl) and leaf dry mass relative growth rate (RGRm) were the highest (76±2 %, 0.413 cm2 cm−2 d−1, 0.709 mg mg−1 d−1, respectively) at the beginning of the leaf expansion process (7 days after bud break). Leaf expansion lasted 84±2 days when air temperature ranged from 13.3±0.8 to 27.6±0.9 °C. The net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and chlorophyll content per fresh mass (Chl) increased during leaf expansion, having the highest values [12.62±1.64 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1, 0.090 mol (H2O) m−2 s−1, and 1.03±0.08 mg g−1, respectively] 56 days after bud break. Chl was directly correlated with leaf dry mass (DM) and P N. The thickness of palisade parenchyma contributed to the total leaf thickness (263.1±1.5 μm) by 47 %, spongy layer thickness 38 %, adaxial epidermis and cuticle thickness 9 %, and abaxial epidermis and cuticle thickness 6 %. Variation in leaf size during leaf expansion might be attributed to a combination of cells density and length, and it is confirmed by the significant (p<0.001) correlations among these traits. Q. ilex leaves reached 90 % of their definitive structure before the most severe drought period (beginning of June — end of August). The high leaf mass area (LMA, 15.1±0.6 mg cm−2) at full leaf expansion was indicative of compact leaves (2028±100 cells mm−2). Air temperature increasing might shorten the favourable period for leaf expansion, thus changing the final amount of biomass per unit leaf area of Q. ilex.  相似文献

Movement ofMimosa pudica L. pulvinules was investigated by using excised ones which were placed on a moist filter paper. The pulvinules excised in the morning opened at the addition of IAA (10−7 M to 10−4M) in the dark. The lag period for the onset of the opening was about 15 min. Na-acetate buffer (pH 4) also induced the opening of pulvinules in the dark, and the buffer-induced opening was inhibited by the uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation. Na-MES and Na-citrate buffers (pH 4) did not induce the opening. Pulvinules taken from closed leaves in the evening were less responsive to IAA than those taken from open leaves in the morning. The pulvinules taken in the evening slightly opened with incandescent light (4000 lux), but those preincubated with IAA (10−7M and 10−6M) opened distinctly upon the illumination.  相似文献

We assessed the effect of salinity on plant growth and leaf expansion rates, as well as the leaf life span and the dynamics of leaf production and mortality in seedlings of Avicennia germinans L. grown at 0, 170, 430, 680, and 940 mol m−3 NaCl. The relative growth rates (RGR) after 27 weeks reached a maximum (10.4 mg g−1 d−1) in 170 mol m−3 NaCl and decreased by 47 and 44% in plants grown at 680 and 940 mol m−3 NaCl. The relative leaf expansion rate (RLER) was maximal at 170 mol m−3 NaCl (120 cm m−2 d−1) and decreased by 57 and 52% in plants grown at 680 and 940 mol m−3 NaCl, respectively. In the same manner as RGR and RLER, the leaf production (P) and leaf death (D) decreased in 81 and 67% when salinity increased from 170 to 940 mol m−3 NaCl, respectively. Since the decrease in P with salinity was more pronounced than the decrease in D, the net accumulation of leaves per plant decreased with salinity. Additionally, an evident increase in annual mortality rates (λ) and death probability was observed with salinity. Leaf half-life (t 0.5) was 425 days in plants grown at 0 mol m−3 NaCl, and decreased to 75 days at 940 mol m−3 NaCl. Thus, increasing salinity caused an increase in mortality rate whereas production of new leaves and leaf longevity decreased and, finally, the leaf area was reduced.  相似文献

The differences in pigment levels, photosynthetic activity and the chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd (as indicator of photosynthetic rates) of green sun and shade leaves of three broadleaf trees (Platanus acerifolia Willd., Populus alba L., Tilia cordata Mill.) were compared. Sun leaves were characterized by higher levels of total chlorophylls a + b and total carotenoids x + c as well as higher values for the weight ratio chlorophyll (Chl) a/b (sun leaves 3.23–3.45; shade leaves: 2.74–2.81), and lower values for the ratio chlorophylls to carotenoids (a + b)/(x + c) (with 4.44–4.70 in sun leaves and 5.04–5.72 in shade leaves). Sun leaves exhibited higher photosynthetic rates P N on a leaf area basis (mean of 9.1–10.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) and Chl basis, which correlated well with the higher values of stomatal conductance G s (range 105–180 mmol m−2 s−1), as compared to shade leaves (G s range 25–77 mmol m−2 s−1; P N: 3.2–3.7 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1). The higher photosynthetic rates could also be detected via imaging the Chl fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd, which possessed higher values in sun leaves (2.8–3.0) as compared to shade leaves (1.4–1.8). In addition, via R Fd images it was shown that the photosynthetic activity of the leaves of all trees exhibits a large heterogeneity across the leaf area, and in general to a higher extent in sun leaves than in shade leaves.  相似文献

Leaf anatomy and eco-physiology of Elymus repens, a temperate loess grassland species, were determined after seven years of exposure to 700 μmol (CO2) mol−1 (EC). EC treatment resulted in significant reduction of stomatal density on both surfaces of couch-grass leaves. Thickness of leaves and that of the sclerenchyma tissues between the vessels and the adaxial surfaces, the area of vascular bundle, and the volumes of phloem and tracheary increased at EC while abaxial epidermis and the sclerenchyma layer between the vessel and the abaxial surface were thicker at ambient CO2 concentration (AC). Stomatal conductance and transpiration rates were lower in EC, while net CO2 assimilation rate considerably increased at EC exposure. Contents of soluble sugars and starch were higher in EC-treated couch-grass leaves than in plants grown at AC. Using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we examined Cl-selective currents manifested by strial marginal cells isolated from the inner ear of gerbils. A large Cl-selective conductance of ∼18 nS/pF was found from nonswollen cells in isotonic buffer containing 150 mm Cl. Under a quasi-symmetrical Cl condition, the `instantaneous' current-voltage relation was close to linear, while the current-voltage relation obtained at the end of command pulses of duration 400 msec showed weak outward rectification. The permeability sequence for anionic currents was as SCN > Br≅ Cl > F > NO 3≅ I > gluconate, corresponding to Eisenmann's sequence V. When whole-cell voltage clamped in isotonic bathing solutions, the cells exhibited volume changes that were accounted for by the Cl currents driven by the imposed electrochemical potential gradients. The volume change was elicited by lowered extracellular Cl concentration, anion substitution and altered holding potentials. The Cl conductance varied in parallel with cell volume when challenged by bath anisotonicity. The whole-cell Cl current was only partially blocked by both 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino) benzoic acid (NPPB, 0.5 mm) and diphenylamine-2-carboxylic acid (DPC, 1.0 mm), but 4-acetamido-4′-isothiocyanato-stilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid (SITS, 0.5 mm) was without effect. The properties of the present whole-cell Cl current resembled those of the single Cl channel previously found in the basolateral membrane of the marginal cell (Takeuchi et al., Hearing Res. 83:89–100, 1995), suggesting that the volume-correlated Cl conductance could be ascribed predominantly to the basolateral membrane. This Cl conductance may function not only in cell volume regulation but also for the transport of Cl and the setting of membrane potential in marginal cells under physiological conditions. During the grain filling period we followed diurnal courses in leaf water potential (ψ1), leaf osmotic potential (ψπ), transpiration (E), leaf conductance to water vapour transfer (g) and microclimatic parameters in field-grown spring barley (Hordeum distichum L. cv. Gunnar). The barley crop was grown on a coarse textured sandy soil at low (50 kg ha−1) or high (200 kg ha−1) levels of potassium applied as KCl. The investigation was undertaken at full irrigation or under drought. Drought was imposed at the beginning of the grain filling period. Leaf conductance and rate of transpiration were higher in the flag leaf than in the leaves of lower insertion. The rate of transpiration of the awns on a dry weight basis was of similar magnitude to that of the flag leaves. On clear days the rate of transpiration of fully watered barley plants was at a high level during most part of the day. The transpiration only decreased at low light intensities. The rate of transpiration was high despite leaf water potentials falling to rather low values due to high evaporative demands. In water stressed plants transpiration decreased and midday depression of transpiration occurred. Normally, daily accumulated transpirational water loss was lower in high K leaves than in low K leaves and generally the bulk water relations of the leaves were more favourable in high K plants than in low K plants. The factorial dependency of the flag leaf conductances on leaf water potential, light intensity, leaf temperature, and leaf-to-air water vapour concentration difference (ΔW) was analysed from a set of field data. From these data, similar sets of microclimatic conditions were classified, and dependencies of leaf conductance on the various environmental parameters were ascertained. The resulting mathematical functions were combined in an empirical simulation model. The results of the model were tested against other sets of measured data. Deviations between measured and predicted leaf conductance occurred at low light intensities. In the flag leaf, water potentials below-1.6 MPa reduced the stomatal apertures and determined the upper limit of leaf conductance. In leaves of lower insertion level conductances were reduced already at higher leaf water potentials. Leaf conductance was increased hyperbolically as photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) increased from darkness to full light. Leaf conductance as a function of leaf temperature followed an optimum curve which in the model was replaced by two linear regression lines intersecting at the optimum temperature of 23.4°C. Increasing leaf-to-air water vapour concentration difference caused a linear decrease in leaf conductance. Leaf conductances became slightly more reduced by lowered water potentials in the low K plants. Stomatal closure in response to a temperature change away from the optimum was more sensitive in high K plants, and also the decrease in leaf conductance under the influence of lowered ambient humidity proceeded with a higher sensitivity in high K plants. Thus, under conditions which favoured high conductances increase of evaporative demand caused an about 10% larger decrease in leaf conductance in the high K plants than in the low K plants. Stomatal sizes and density in the flag leaves differed between low and high K plants. In plants with partially open stomata, leaf conductance, calculated from stomatal pore dimensions, was up to 10% lower in the high K plants than in the low K plants. A similar reduction in leaf conductance in high K plants was measured porometrically. It was concluded that the beneficial effect of K supply on water use efficiency reported in former studies primarily resulted from altered stomatal sizes and densities.  相似文献

Response of epidermal diffusive conductance to simultaneous changes in leaf water potential and photon flux density was studied in primary bean leaves. Values of epidermal conductance corresponding to every photon flux density decreased with decreasing leaf water potential below - 6.9 x 105Pa; slight deorease was followed by a rapid one at water potential ranging from - 8.0 to -10.5 x 105 Pa. In the leaves with water potential lower than -10.5 x 105 Pa neither the saturated photon flux density (1200 [xeinstein m-2s-1) induced photoactive stomatal opening. Negative influence of one factor could be partially compensated by positive influence of the other. These results were in good agreement with the considered mechanism of action of leaf water potential and photon flux density on epidermal conductance.  相似文献

We have used current/voltage (I/V) analysis to investigate the role played by extracellular mucilage in the cellular response to osmotic shock in Lamprothamnium papulosum. Cells lacking extracellular mucilage originated in a brackish environment (1/3 seawater). These were compared, first with cells coated with thick (∼50 μm) extracellular mucilage, collected from a marine lake, and second, with equivalent mucilaginous marine cells, treated with heparinase enzyme to disrupt the mucilage layer. Histochemical stains Toluidine Blue and Alcian Blue at low pH identified the major component of the extracellular mucilage as sulfated polysaccharides. Treating mucilage with heparinase removed the capacity for staining with cationic dyes at low pH, although the mucilage was not removed, and remained as a substantial unstirred layer. Cells lacking mucilage responded to hypotonic shock with depolarization (by ∼95 mV), cessation of cyclosis, due to transient opening of Ca2+ channels, and opening of Ca2+-activated Cl channels and K+ channels. Cell conductance transiently increased tenfold, but after 60 min was restored to the conductance prior to hypotonic shock. Mucilaginous cells depolarized by a small amount (∼18 mV), but Ca2+ channels failed to open in large enough numbers for cyclosis to cease. Likewise most Ca2+-activated Cl channels failed to open and conductance increased only ∼1.2-fold above the prehypotonic level. After 60 min conductance was less than the conductance prior to hypotonic shock. Heparinased mucilaginous cells recovered several aspects of the hypotonic response in cells lacking mucilage. These cells depolarized (by ∼103 mV); cyclosis ceased, indicating that Ca2+ channels had opened, and conductance increased to ∼4 times the value prior to hypotonic shock, indicating that Ca2+-activated Cl channels opened. However, after 60 min, these cells had neither restored membrane potential (and remained at positive values), nor decreased their conductance. It was not possible to determine whether K+ channels had opened. The heparinased cells recovered the normal hypotonic response of mucilaginous cells when heparinase was washed out. Apical seawater cells, which lacked mucilage, were unaffected by heparinase treatment. The results demonstrate that the presence of extracellular sulfated polysaccharide mucilage impacts upon the electrophysiology of the response to osmotic shock in Lamprothamnium cells. The role of such sulfated mucilages in marine algae and animal cells is compared and discussed. Received: 24 March 1998/Revised: 28 April 1999  相似文献

A concentric cylinder reactor (CCR) is described that enables the steady-state kinetics of microbial biofilms to be evaluated under conditions of constant nutrient flow and variable shear-stress. The reactor has been used to evaluate the influence of fluid dynamic shear on the extent and mode of detachment of bacteria from biofilms. Using a food factory isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a general increase in the overall growth rate and detachment of the biofilms (cfu cm−2 min−1) with time was shown for each biofilm, regardless of the prevailing shear. As the shear rate was increased beyond 0.123 ms−1, populations tended toward a pseudo steady-state. Sudden changes in shear force, however, caused dramatic changes in the productivity of steady-state populations. The CCR provides an effective means of testing disinfectant activity, particularly for clean-in-place situations, and allows for an examination of the residual effects of a cleansing programme on a treated surface for three different chemical classes of disinfectant. Utilisation of the CCR would, therefore, provide enhanced ability to determine the efficacy and efficiency of chemical products for use in sanitation protocols. Rates of photosynthesis vary with foliage age and typically decline from full-leaf expansion until senescence occurs. This age-related decline in photosynthesis is especially important in species that retain foliage for several years, yet it is not known whether the internal conductance to CO2 movement (g i) plays any role. More generally, g i has been measured in only a few conifers and has never been measured in leaves or needles older than 1 year. The effect of ageing on g i was investigated in Pinus pinaster, a species that retains needle for 4 or more years. Measurements were made in autumn when trees were not water limited and after leaf expansion was complete. Rates of net photosynthesis decreased with needle age, from 8 μmol m−2 s−1 in fully expanded current-year needles to 4.4 μmol m−2 s−1 in 3-year-old needles. The relative limitation due to internal conductance (0.24–0.35 out of 1) was in all cases larger than that due to stomatal conductance (0.13–0.19 out of 1). Internal conductance and stomatal conductance approximately scaled with rates of photosynthesis. Hence, there was no difference among year-classes in the relative limitations posed by internal and stomatal conductance or evidence that they cause the age-related decline in photosynthesis. There was little evidence that the age-related decline in photosynthesis was due to decreases in contents of N or Rubisco. The decrease in rates of photosynthesis from current-year to older needles was instead related to a twofold decrease in rates of photosynthesis per unit nitrogen and V cmax/Rubisco (i.e., in vivo specific activity).  相似文献

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench. cv Jianxi) is highly resistant to Al stress and is known to be an Al-accumulator. Pot experiments were carried out in a greenhouse to investigate the accumulation of Al in leaves and seeds of buckwheat. Plants were grown for 12 weeks in a strong acid soil amended with or without CaCO3 at a rate of 1 g kg−1 soil. Old leaves accumulated as much as 10 g kg−1 Al of dry weight when the plants were grown in the acid soil, while the Al concentrations in leaves immediately adjacent to seeds, seed coats, and embryos were, on average, 4516, 41.2 and 7.7 mg kg−1, respectively. The Al concentration significantly decreased in leaves when the plants were grown in the limed soil, and the Al concentrations in leaves immediately adjacent to seeds, seed coats, and embryos were, on average, 1586, 21.3 and 3.1 mg kg−1, respectively. These results show that seeds accumulate much less Al than buckwheat leaves. The underlying mechanisms are discussed. Section Editor: H. Lambers  相似文献

The transient receptor potential channel TRPV5 contributes to the apical entry pathway for transcellular calcium reabsorption in the kidney. Acid load causes hypercalciuria in animals and humans. We have previously reported that intracellular protons directly inhibit TRPV5. Here, we examined the effects of intracellular pH on single-channel activity of TRPV5. We found that TRPV5 channels exhibit full and subconductance open states in excised inside–out patches of Chinese hamster ovary cells. The slope conductance values (Na+ as a charge carrier, between −25 and −75 mV) for full and subconductance opening at intracellular pH 7.4 were 59 ± 6 and 29 ± 3 pS, respectively. Intracellular acidification caused a small decrease in single-channel conductance. Importantly, intracellular acidification decreased open probability for the full and subconductance states and increased probability for closing. To investigate how intracellular protons decrease open probability of the channel, we proposed a simple three-state model for open–subconductance–closed state transition and examined the effects of acidification on the respective forward and reverse rate constants. We found that intracellular acidification decreases opening of TRPV5 predominantly by promoting a transition from the subconductance to the closed state. Thus, intracellular acidification directly inhibits TRPV5 by causing a conformational change(s) leading to a decrease of open probability of TRPV5 as well as of the single-channel conductance. Blue light (BL) induces stomatal opening through the activation of H+-ATPases with subsequent ion accumulation in guard cells. In most plant species, red light (RL) enhances BL-dependent stomatal opening. This RL effect is attributable to the chloroplasts of guard cell, the only cells in the epidermis possessing this organelle. To clarify the role of chloroplasts in stomatal regulation, we investigated the effects of RL on BL-dependent stomatal opening in isolated epidermis, guard cell protoplasts, and intact leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana. In isolated epidermal tissues and intact leaves, weak BL superimposed on RL enhanced stomatal opening while BL alone was less effective. In guard cell protoplasts, RL enhanced BL-dependent H+-pumping and DCMU, a photosynthetic electron transport inhibitor, eliminated this effect. RL enhanced phosphorylation levels of the H+-ATPase in response to BL, but this RL effect was not suppressed by DCMU. Furthermore, DCMU inhibited both RL-induced and BL-dependent stomatal opening in intact leaves. The photosynthetic rate in leaves correlated positively with BL-dependent stomatal opening in the presence of DCMU. We conclude that guard cell chloroplasts provide ATP and/or reducing equivalents that fuel BL-dependent stomatal opening, and that they indirectly monitor photosynthetic CO2 fixation in mesophyll chloroplasts by absorbing PAR in the epidermis.  相似文献

The anatomic and functional leaf characteristics related to photosynthetic performance of Castanea sativa growing in vitro and in nursery were compared. The irradiance saturated photosynthesis in in vitro grown plantlets was significantly lower compared to nursery plants (65 vs. 722 μmol m−2 s−1). The maximum photosynthetic rate (PNmax) was 4.0 and 10.0 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1 in in vitro microshoots and nursery plant leaves, respectively. Carboxylation efficiency (CE) and electron transport rate (ETR) were three-folds higher in nursery plants than in microshoots. The nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was saturated at 80 μmol m−2 s−1 in microshoots suggesting limited photoprotection by thermal dissipation. The microshoots had wide open, spherical stomata and higher stomatal density than nursery plants and they had almost no epicuticular wax. Consequently, the microshoots had high stomatal conductance and high transpiration rate. These anatomic and functional leaf characteristics are likely major causes of the low survival rates of plantlets after ex vitro transfer.  相似文献

Nuphar lutea is an amphibious plant with submerged and aerial foliage, which raises the question how do both leaf types perform photosynthetically in two different environments. We found that the aerial leaves function like terrestrial sun-leaves in that their photosynthetic capability was high and saturated under high irradiance (ca. 1,500 μmol photons m−2 s−1). We show that stomatal opening and Rubisco activity in these leaves co-limited photosynthesis at saturating irradiance fluctuating in a daily rhythm. In the morning, sunlight stimulated stomatal opening, Rubisco synthesis, and the neutralization of a night-accumulated Rubisco inhibitor. Consequently, the light-saturated quantum efficiency and rate of photosynthesis increased 10-fold by midday. During the afternoon, gradual closure of the stomata and a decrease in Rubisco content reduced the light-saturated photosynthetic rate. However, at limited irradiance, stomatal behavior and Rubisco content had only a marginal effect on the photosynthetic rate, which did not change during the day. In contrast to the aerial leaves, the photosynthesis rate of the submerged leaves, adapted to a shaded environment, was saturated under lower irradiance. The light-saturated quantum efficiency of these leaves was much lower and did not change during the day. Due to their low photosynthetic affinity for CO2 (35 μM) and inability to utilize other inorganic carbon species, their photosynthetic rate at air-equilibrated water was CO2-limited. These results reveal differences in the photosynthetic performance of the two types of Nuphar leaves and unravel how photosynthetic daily rhythm in the aerial leaves is controlled.  相似文献

The effects of salinity on growth, leaf nutrient content, water relations, gas exchange parameters and chlorophyll fluorescence were studied in six-month-old seedlings of citrus (Citrus limonia Osbeck) and rooted cuttings of olive (Olea europaea L. cv. Arbequina). Citrus and olive were grown in a greenhouse and watered with half strength Hoagland’s solution plus 0 or 50 mM NaCl for citrus, or plus 0 or 100 mM NaCl for olive. Salinity increased Cl and Na+ content in leaves and roots in both species and reduced total plant dry mass, net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance. Decreased growth and gas exchange was apparently due to a toxic effect of Cl and/or Na+ and not due to osmotic stress since both species were able to osmotically adjust to maintain pressure potential higher than in non-salinized leaves. Internal CO2 concentration in the mesophyll was not reduced in either species. Salinity decreased leaf chlorophyll a content only in citrus.  相似文献
